What is Just Another Grass Seed?

2 parts

Just Another Grass Seed is a small mod that adds a single item to the pack: Grass Seed. The pack ships version 21.1.5 of Just Another Grass Seed, and it has been included since FTB Skies 2 1.4.0 or earlier.[1][2]

Where it shows up in progression

You meet the seed early. It is the task of quest a quest in "?" in the "the_beginning" chapter, which unlocks after another quest in that chapter. The quest has no title in the pack, so the only thing it asks of you is to get hold of the grass seed.[2]

That early placement suggests the seed is meant for the opening stretch of the pack, but the sources don't say how you obtain it or what you use it for.[2]

What the sources don't confirm

Unverified How the Grass Seed is obtained, how it is used and any pack-specific recipe or config changes are not confirmed by the available sources, so this guide does not describe them.

Unverified The jar's file name mentions Minecraft 1.21.1 even though the pack is 1.20.1. The sources do not explain this, so treat the version details with caution.

Unverified No ATM Star path is confirmed for this mod; it is not on that quest path.

How do you get started with Just Another Grass Seed?

4 parts

The first steps with this mod are short. In this pack, everything starts with getting your hands on Grass Seed, and after that you can make Fake Grass Block and switch it into biome-themed looks.[2][3]

Get Grass Seed by sifting

The pack adds a sifting recipe that uses the Mechanical Cloth Mesh. Grass Seed is one of its many possible results, so this is your way in.[3]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Added by the pack. Grass Seed is one of many possible outputs of this sifting recipe.

Tip: The same sifting recipe can also give you wheat seeds, melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, sugar cane, bamboo and a Menril Sapling, so you pick up other useful drops while you hunt for Grass Seed.[3]

The quest for it

The Beginning chapter of the quest book has a quest whose task is to obtain Grass Seed. It unlocks after another quest in that chapter, so follow the chapter in order: a quest in "?".[2]

Make a Fake Grass Block

The pack gives you more than one way to make a plain Fake Grass Block. The first is a shapeless crafting recipe.[3]

Shapeless (kubejs)

The second is another shapeless recipe that involves Super Glue.[3]

Pick a biome look

Once you have a plain Fake Grass Block, the stonecutter turns it into biome-themed versions. The pack has recipes for variants such as Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow), Fake Grass Block (Swamp) and Fake Grass Block (Desert). Here is the Plains one as an example.[3]

Changed your mind? The pack also has stonecutting recipes that turn each variant back into the plain Fake Grass Block, so experimenting costs you nothing.[3]

How does Just Another Grass Seed work?

3 parts

The sources show no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids for Just Another Grass Seed in this pack. What they do cover is how you get its items: the Fake Grass Block, its biome variants and the Grass Seed. Every recipe here is added by the pack.[3]

Making the base Fake Grass Block

The pack gives the base block two shapeless crafting recipes. One converts a normal grass block directly. The other uses different ingredients, so you can see both below.[3]

Shapeless (kubejs)

Recipe id: ftb:fake_grass

Switching biome variants with the stonecutter

The biome variants are made in a stonecutter, not on a crafting grid. Put the base block in and you can pick a variant such as Fake Grass Block (Desert), Fake Grass Block (Jungle) or Fake Grass Block (Mangrove). Other variants with a stonecutting recipe from the base block are Badlands, Birch, Cheery, Dark Forest, Meadow, Mushroom, Ocean and Pale Garden.[3]

Fake Grass Block (Desert)Added by the pack

Stonecutting

Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/jags_desert_fake_grass_block

Going back works the same way. The variants Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow), Fake Grass Block (Sparse_jungle) and Fake Grass Block (Swamp), like all the others, each have a stonecutting recipe that turns them into the base block. The recipes shown all run between a variant and the base block, so use the base block as your middle step when changing looks.[3]

Getting Grass Seed

The only source of Grass Seed in the sources is a sifting recipe added by the pack. It uses the Create Sifter recipe type together with the pack's Mechanical Cloth Mesh. Grass Seed is one of many possible outputs, alongside seeds and crops from several other mods and vanilla. The sources give no drop chances, so how often it turns up is unverified.[3]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Unverified What Grass Seed does once you have it (planting, spreading or any other use) isn't covered by the available sources, and no config files, tooltips or guidebook exist for this mod in the pack. Check in-game before relying on any behavior.

How do you progress through Just Another Grass Seed?

3 parts

Just Another Grass Seed has a short path in this pack rather than a ladder of tiers. You pick up your first Grass Seed early in the questbook, then you can craft a Fake Grass Block and convert it into biome-styled variants.[2][3]

Step 1: Get Grass Seed

Grass Seed shows up in the opening chapter of the questbook. Quest a quest in "?" in the chapter "the_beginning" has you obtain Grass Seed, and it comes after quest a quest in "?".[2]

The pack adds a sifting recipe for it. You sift plain dirt with the Mechanical Cloth Mesh, and Grass Seed is one of the possible outputs. The same recipe can also give you other seeds and crops, such as wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, beetroot seeds, bamboo and sugar cane, so expect a mixed bag.[3]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Added by the pack. Grass Seed is one of several possible outputs.

Step 2: Craft Fake Grass Blocks

The pack adds two shapeless recipes for the Fake Grass Block. The first one starts from a regular grass block.[3]

Shapeless (kubejs)

Recipe id: ftb:fake_grass

Added by the pack. A shapeless recipe, so the layout doesn't matter.

The second recipe doesn't need a grass block.[3]

Recipe id: ftb:fake_grass_1

Added by the pack. Also shapeless.

Step 3: Switch biome variants

Once you have a base Fake Grass Block, the pack lets you turn it into biome-styled versions with stonecutting. Each variant has its own stonecutting recipe from the base block. A few examples are Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow), Fake Grass Block (Desert) and Fake Grass Block (Swamp).[3]

Fake Grass Block (Snow)Added by the pack

Stonecutting

Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/jags_snow_fake_grass_block

Added by the pack. Base block to the Snow variant, and the other variants follow the same pattern.

The other variants are Badlands, Birch, Cheery, Dark Forest, Jungle, Mangrove, Meadow, Mushroom, Ocean, Pale Garden and Sparse Jungle. For example, there are Fake Grass Block (Cheery), Fake Grass Block (Mushroom) and Fake Grass Block (Pale_garden).[3]

Every variant can also be stonecut back into the plain Fake Grass Block, so you can change your mind later.[3]

Added by the pack. Example of a variant (Plains) going back to the base block.

Tip: Since every variant converts back to the base block, you can redo the look of a build whenever you like.[3]

How does Just Another Grass Seed work with other mods?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

This pack connects Just Another Grass Seed to other mods through three custom recipes, all added by the pack. Here is what each one does.[4]

Sifting for Grass Seed

The pack adds a Create Sifter sifting recipe where dirt and a Mechanical Cloth Mesh can give you Grass Seed. The same recipe lists seeds and crops from several other mods among its results.[4]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Just Another Grass Seed?

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

In this pack, the mod shows up in one quest, and it lives in the "the_beginning" chapter. It's an early-game quest, so you'll run into it near the start of your run.[5]

The quest is a quest in "?", and it has no title in the pack files. Its task is an item task: you hand in Grass Seed. That's all the quest asks for.[5]

It comes after the quest with the id 5FCEA8229BB6955C in the same chapter, so you need to finish that one first before this one unlocks.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say what the previous quest asks for, whether this quest gives a reward, or how you obtain Grass Seed in this pack. Check the in-game quest book for those details.
