What is Immersive Engineering?

1 part

Immersive Engineering is a retro-futuristic tech mod built around realism-inspired machines. Instead of glowing tubes, you get actual hanging powerlines, and instead of one block that magically spits out dusts, you build big multiblocks. The crusher is 5x3x3 and the excavator is 3x7x8. It runs on the Forge Energy API, but it can be played fully standalone.[1]

Power does not travel through lines of blocks. You span cables between connectors. Generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. For documentation, craft the in-game Engineer's Manual with a book and a lever.[1]

The pack includes version 12.4.2-194 of the mod. I can't see any recipe or config changes for it in the sources I have, so I'm not claiming any here.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Immersive Engineering quest chapter, and it starts by asking you to get the Engineer's Hammer ("Welcome to Immersive Engineering!" quest). Three branches open up from there: the Coke Brick ("Coke Oven" quest), the Kiln Brick ("Alloy Kiln" quest), and the Conveyor Belt with the Fluid Pipe ("Logistics" quest).[3]

Coke bricks lead on to the Blast Brick ("Blast Furnace" quest) and to creosote oil with treated wood ("Treated Wood Planks" quest). That treated wood step unlocks the Engineer's Workbench ("Engineer's Workbench" quest). Blueprints follow from the workbench, and they lead to the Garden Cloche ("Garden Cloche" quest) and the Revolver ("Revolver" quest).[3]

The power side begins with LV wiring: LV Wire Connector, LV Wire Coil and LV Wire Relay ("Immersive Power" quest). From there you can go to the Thermoelectric Generator ("Thermoelectric Generator" quest), to the Kinetic Dynamo with the Windmill and Water Wheel ("Kinetic Generator" quest), or up to MV wiring and the Transformer ("MV Wires" quest). HV wiring and the HV Transformer come next ("HV Wires" quest).[3]

The machine multiblocks are gated behind the Light Engineering Block, Heavy Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block blocks ("Engineering Blocks" quest). The chapter also asks for fluids such as Bucket of Redstone Acid, Bucket of Acetaldehyde and Bucket of Phenolic Resin.[3]

Unverified The quest data I have is cut off partway through the chapter, so later quests and rewards aren't covered here. The sources also don't show this mod on the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

7 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it gives you a sensible build order. Here is the path, step by step.[3]

Tip: The mod's own documentation is the Engineer's Manual, crafted with a book and a lever. Keep it handy while you work through this section.[1]

Start with the Engineer's Hammer

The first quest in the chapter, "Welcome to Immersive Engineering!" quest, asks for the Engineer's Hammer. The brick quests and the belt and pipe quest all unlock after it, so make it first.[3]

Bricks for your first multiblocks

Once you have the hammer, the quests ask for Coke Brick and Kiln Brick. The Coke Brick quest opens the next branch, which leads to creosote and the Blast Brick.[3]

Creosote and treated wood

The next quest after the Coke Brick, "Treated Wood Planks" quest, wants a Bucket of Creosote Oil and some Treated Wood Planks. The pack has a Create spout filling recipe for treated planks, and it is flagged as changed by the pack, so it is not just the mod default.[3][4]

Hemp fiber from the Cloche

A quest in the pack's starting chapter asks for string and Industrial Hemp Fiber. The pack adds Garden Cloche recipes that turn Industrial Hemp Seeds into hemp fiber, and one of them works on plain dirt. Other soils, such as Rich Soil and Mystical Agriculture farmland, have their own pack recipes too.[4][6]

What comes next

Next the chapter moves on to power. It asks for LV Wire Connector, LV Wire Coil and LV Wire Relay. After that come the Kinetic Dynamo, Windmill and Water Wheel. Many later machine quests also ask for the Light Engineering Block, Heavy Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block blocks, so expect to make those soon.[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering runs on the Forge Energy API, so it plays nicely with other tech mods. The big difference is that power doesn't travel through lanes of blocks. You span actual cables between connectors. Generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more, and many of the machines are multiblocks.[1]

Your in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual, which the mod's project page says you craft with a book and a lever. Check it whenever you need the exact build layout for a multiblock.[1]

Multiblocks

The Crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels. The Excavator is a much bigger and more resource-hungry 3x7x8 multiblock with a bucketwheel that digs ore out of the ground.[1]

The mod also tracks several multiblocks with advancements: the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Arc Furnace, the Metal Press and the Diesel Generator. Forming each one earns its own advancement, which makes a handy checklist as you expand.[5]

Power and storage

The pack leaves the capacitor limits at the mod defaults. Each tier has its own input, output and storage cap, all in Flux.[7]

On the generation side, the Diesel Generator outputs 4,096 Flux per tick, and the burn time of the fuel decides the total energy you get (machines.dieselGen_output). The Kinetic Dynamo has an output modifier of 3, which is then scaled by the rotation modifier of the attached water- or windmill (machines.dynamo_output).[7]

The Charging Station can push up to 256 Flux per tick into an item (machines.charger_consumption). The Assembler spends 80 Flux each time it crafts an item from a recipe (machines.assembler_consumption).[7]

Tip: Machines can report their power state in chat. The messages include the stored energy as current/maximum Flux, the average Flux per tick transferred over a number of ticks, and the average loss between points on a cable connection. That makes them a good way to spot a weak link in your network.[5]

Machine speed and upkeep

The time and energy modifiers for the Arc Furnace, Crusher, Bottling Machine and Auto Workbench are all at 1 in this pack, which is the mod default. Recipes therefore run at their normal speed and cost (machines.arc_furnace.timeModifier, machines.arc_furnace.energyModifier, machines.crusher.timeModifier, machines.crusher.energyModifier, machines.bottling_machine.timeModifier, machines.bottling_machine.energyModifier, machines.auto_workbench.timeModifier, machines.auto_workbench.energyModifier).[7]

Graphite Electrodes in the Arc Furnace take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works. With the default of 96,000 damage, that is 8 consecutive in-game days of runtime (machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage).[7]

The External Heater uses 8 Flux per tick to add one heat to a furnace. It creates up to 4 heat during startup and then 1 heat per tick to keep the furnace running (machines.external_heater.consumption).[7]

Finding and mining minerals

The Core Sample Drill uses 40 Flux per tick and needs 200 ticks to work out which mineral is under a chunk (machines.coredrill.consumption, machines.coredrill.time). Its result tells you whether a mineral vein was found or not, and how intact the vein is.[5][7]

The Excavator draws 4,096 Flux per tick while it digs (machines.excavator.consumption). One chunk can give at most 38,400 yield (machines.excavator.yield). When a vein generates, a random share of it up to 0.2 (as a decimal value) is already depleted (machines.excavator.initial_depletion). These values are all the mod defaults in this pack. You can also turn off the Excavator's heavy particle effects with machines.excavator.particles.[7]

Watch out: This pack sets the vein size to 0 for bauxite, deep nickel, lead, nickel, silver and uranium, and a size of 0 disables generation of that ore. The mod defaults were 6, 6, 8, 5, 9 and 4. Don't expect to find these as normal world ores.[7]

Item and fluid handling

  • The Bottling Machine can be switched between holding containers until they are full and allowing partial filling.[5]
  • Extracting Conveyor Belts report how many items per second they pull out.[5]
  • Machines can use redstone control, which can be inverted, and a strong redstone signal can be enabled or disabled.[5]
  • Pumps can be toggled to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone. The mod warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[5]
  • Some containers refuse to store gases, and you'll get a chat message if you try.[5]

The advancement list also points to Dropping Conveyor Belts, Item Routers, Item Batchers and Sheetmetal Chutes as part of the mod's item-moving toolkit.[5]

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

7 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it grows from one root: "Welcome to Immersive Engineering!" quest, which asks for the Engineer's Hammer. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I describe each one by what it asks for. Everything below follows the order the quests unlock.[3]

Hemp and the cloche

A quest in the starter chapter, "String is the Thing" quest, asks for string and Industrial Hemp Fiber. The pack adds its own Garden Cloche recipes that turn Industrial Hemp Seeds into hemp fiber. They accept dirt, Rich Soil, several tiers of farmland and four tiers of goo soil.[4][6]

Stage 1: bricks, treated wood and the workbench

  1. After the hammer, the chapter splits three ways: Coke Brick in "Coke Oven" quest, Kiln Brick in "Alloy Kiln" quest, and a Conveyor Belt plus Fluid Pipe in "Logistics" quest.[3]
  2. Coke bricks lead on to Blast Brick in "Blast Furnace" quest and to Bucket of Creosote Oil plus Treated Wood Planks in "Treated Wood Planks" quest.[3]
  3. Treated wood unlocks the Engineer's Workbench in "Engineer's Workbench" quest.[3]

The pack changed one of the treated wood recipes: a Create spout filling recipe that turns creosote and planks into treated wood planks.[4]

Stage 2: blueprints and early gear

The workbench opens three blueprint quests: "Crafting Components Blueprint" quest, "Projectiles Blueprints" quest and "Metal Press Molds Blueprint" quest. The first leads to the Garden Cloche in "Garden Cloche" quest. The second leads to the Revolver in "Revolver" quest.[3]

Power tiers: LV, MV and HV

Power follows a clear low, medium, high ladder. "Immersive Power" quest is the low-voltage step: LV Wire Connector, LV Wire Coil and LV Wire Relay. From there you can branch to a Thermoelectric Generator in "Thermoelectric Generator" quest, or to the Kinetic Dynamo, Windmill and Water Wheel in "Kinetic Generator" quest.[3]

Medium voltage is "MV Wires" quest: MV Wire Connector, MV Wire Coil, MV Wire Relay and a Transformer. High voltage is "HV Wires" quest: HV Wire Connector, HV Wire Coil, HV Wire Relay and an HV Transformer.[3]

Stage 3: engineering blocks and machines

"Engineering Blocks" quest asks for the Light Engineering Block, Heavy Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block blocks. Most of the machine quests unlock from it, and each one asks for a mix of these blocks, Steel Scaffolding and other parts. Examples are "Refinery" quest, "Crusher" quest and "Metal Press" quest.[3]

The graphite line starts at "Industrial Squeezer" quest and moves to HOP Graphite Dust in "HOP Graphite Dust" quest. Then comes the Graphite Electrode in "Graphite Electrode" quest. That unlocks "Arc Furnace" quest, the steel-focused quest. It asks for Steel Sheetmetal, Reinforced Blast Brick and a steel block.[3]

Two late quests build on high voltage. "Diesel Generator" quest asks for a Radiator Block and a Generator Block. "Lightning Rod" quest asks for High-Voltage Coil Block, Copper Coil Block and an HV Accumulator.[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering doesn't live on its own in this pack. The pack adds or rewires a bunch of recipes so IE items plug into farming, coke and creosote production, metal processing, and some late-game crafts. Here's where you'll run into those links.[4]

Hemp, soils and seeds

The Garden Cloche gets pack-added recipes that turn Industrial Hemp Seeds into Industrial Hemp Fiber on soils from other mods. These include Farmer's Delight Rich Soil, the Just Dire Things soils (from Primogel Soil up to Shadowpulse Soil), and the Mystical Agriculture and Mystical Agradditions farmlands, from Inferium Farmland up to Insanium Farmland.[4]

You can also find hemp seeds without growing anything first. Sifting dirt with a Mechanical Cloth Mesh can drop Industrial Hemp Seeds alongside Farmer's Delight seeds and a long list of other crops.[4]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Industrial Fertilizer also gets a use outside IE: it appears in the pack's jar recipes for Snad and Red Snad.[4]

Coke and creosote

Modern Industrialization's coke ovens produce Creosote Oil alongside coal coke. The pack changed the coke oven recipes for coal and for coal dust, and added one for coal GeOre shards. Coke comes out as Coal Coke Gem and coke dust as Coal Coke Dust.[4]

The pack also adds its own recipes to the Advanced Coke Oven for several coal-based inputs, and each one also gives creosote. The recipes are shown below, along with the oven's own crafting recipe.[4]

That creosote has another use. The pack-changed Modern Industrialization mixer recipe combines it with Redstone to make Lubricant.[4]

Metals and steel

The pack changed the slab recipes for IE's aluminium, lead and silver storage. They convert into the pack's own Block of Aluminum, Block of Lead and Block of Silver. The coke slab likewise converts to and from Block of Coal Coke.[4]

Steel is shared with the pack's materials too. Smelting or blasting IE steel tools and armor, such as the Steel Sword or Steel Chestplate, gives back Steel Nugget. You can also make Steel Plate with the Engineer's Hammer and a steel ingot.[4]

Uranium is handled through Productive Metalworks. Casting molten uranium on an ingot cast or nugget cast gives IE's Uranium Ingot or Uranium Nugget.[4]

HOP graphite

HOP graphite is a good example of mods chaining together. Three pack-changed recipes link IE with Mystical Agriculture, Productive Bees and Oritech, and they are shown below.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Immersive Engineering?

    4 parts

Most of the Immersive Engineering quests sit in one chapter called "immersive_engineering". One more sits in the chapter "the_beginning" and asks for Industrial Hemp Fiber together with string. None of these quests have titles, so they are referenced by their IDs below.[3][6]

    Getting started

    1. "Welcome to Immersive Engineering!" quest is the entry point. It asks for the Engineer's Hammer, and the early quests hang off it.[3]
    2. Right after it come "Coke Oven" quest (an observation task and a Coke Brick), "Alloy Kiln" quest (an observation task and an Kiln Brick) and "Logistics" quest (a Conveyor Belt and a Fluid Pipe).[3]
    3. The coke brick quest leads to "Blast Furnace" quest (an observation task and a Blast Brick) and to "Treated Wood Planks" quest (Bucket of Creosote Oil and Treated Wood Planks).[3]
    4. The creosote quest leads to "Engineer's Workbench" quest, which asks for the Engineer's Workbench.[3]
    5. The workbench quest leads to the blueprint quests: "Crafting Components Blueprint" quest, "Projectiles Blueprints" quest and "Metal Press Molds Blueprint" quest, all asking for an Engineer's Blueprint.[3]
    6. "Garden Cloche" quest follows the first of those and asks for the Garden Cloche. "Revolver" quest follows the second and asks for the Revolver.[3]

    Power and wiring

    1. "Immersive Power" quest is the LV wiring quest: LV Wire Connector, LV Wire Coil and LV Wire Relay.[3]
    2. Three quests follow it. "Thermoelectric Generator" quest wants the Thermoelectric Generator. "Kinetic Generator" quest wants the Kinetic Dynamo, Windmill and Water Wheel. "MV Wires" quest is the MV tier: MV Wire Connector, MV Wire Coil, MV Wire Relay and a Transformer.[3]
    3. "HV Wires" quest follows the MV quest and is the HV tier: HV Wire Connector, HV Wire Coil, HV Wire Relay and the HV Transformer.[3]
    4. "Bucket of Redstone Acid" quest asks for a Bucket of Redstone Acid and comes after the hammer quest and "Mixer" quest. It leads to "Accumulators" quest, which asks for the LV Accumulator, MV Accumulator and HV Accumulator.[3]
    5. "Lightning Rod" quest needs the HV wiring quest, the engineering blocks quest "Engineering Blocks" quest and the capacitor quest done first. It has an observation task and asks for items such as the High-Voltage Coil Block and Copper Coil Block.[3]

    Multiblock machines

"Engineering Blocks" quest asks for the Heavy Engineering Block, Light Engineering Block and Redstone Engineering Block blocks. Most of the machine quests come after it. They mix an observation task with items such as Steel Scaffolding, Iron Sheetmetal and Steel Fence.[3]

    Plastics, the railgun and graphite

    1. "Acetaldehyde" quest asks for a Bucket of Acetaldehyde and follows "Refinery" quest. "Phenolic Resin" quest then asks for a Bucket of Phenolic Resin.[3]
    2. "Bottling Machine" quest needs the phenolic resin quest and the engineering blocks quest, and asks for the Fluid Pump. "Duroplast Sheet" quest follows it and asks for the Duroplast Sheet.[3]
    3. "Advanced Electronic Component" quest asks for the Advanced Electronic Component and needs the duroplast quest and "Crafting Components Blueprint" quest.[3]
    4. "Railgun" quest asks for the Railgun. It needs the advanced component quest, "Projectiles Blueprints" quest and the capacitor quest.[3]
    5. "Gun Modding" quest covers the tool upgrades: Precision Scope, Advanced Heatsinks, Bayonet, Extended Magazine and Amplifier Electron Tubes. It also has a checkmark task, and it needs both the revolver and railgun quests.[3]
    6. "Industrial Squeezer" quest includes a Wooden Barrel and leads to "HOP Graphite Dust" quest (HOP Graphite Dust). That leads on to "Graphite Electrode" quest (Graphite Electrode), which also needs "Metal Press" quest and the fluid pump quest.[3]
    7. "Arc Furnace" quest needs the electrode quest and the engineering blocks quest. It asks for Steel Sheetmetal, Steel Sheetmetal Slab and the Reinforced Blast Brick, among other items.[3]

Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?

    3 parts

Good news: in the server config, the only values this pack changed from the mod default are the ore vein sizes. Everything else with a listed mod default is left alone, so start with ore generation.[7]

World generation: IE ores are switched off

The pack sets the vein size of every Immersive Engineering ore to 0. The option description says 0 disables generation, so these ores are not generated as normal world veins in this pack.[7]

The other ore settings, such as attempts per chunk, height range and distribution, are still at the mod defaults, and retro-generation is off for every ore (for example ores.lead.retrogen_enable is false). Only the vein size was changed.[7]

    Machines and power: mod defaults

The machine, wire, capacitor and tool numbers in the server config all match the mod default, so you can plan your power setup with the values below.[7]

The recipe speed and energy modifiers for the crusher, arc furnace, metal press, mixer, sawmill, squeezer and the other machines are all 1, so the pack does not tweak machine speed or energy costs.[7]

Tip: The Excavator spawns a ridiculous amount of particles. If it hurts your FPS, set machines.excavator.particles to false.[7]

    Client options worth knowing

The client options shown for this pack are at their normal values. showTextOverlay is true, which shows the overlay text for things like capacitor and pump settings. enableVBO is true, and stencilBufferEnabled is true. increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5 and manualGuiScale is 4, both the mod default.[8]

Tip: If you need more FPS around turrets or garden cloches, you can set disableFancyTESR to true. It is false in this pack. Its description says it may improve FPS and affects turrets and garden cloches.[8]

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

    3 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the last two mod releases.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so this section only covers the mod's own changelogs. Whether the pack changed anything about these features is unverified.

    12.4.2-194 (the version in 1.22.0)

    • The item router can now filter by mod as well as by tags.[9]
    • Cloche recipes can have an optional "fluid" element, and if a recipe doesn't specify one it uses water. Crimson and warped fungi are now grown with lava.[9]
    • New item hatch, which pulls a single stack from an inventory.[9]
    • Extracting conveyors now have a configurable stack size instead of a configurable tick rate.[9]
    • The storage shelf has new insertion logic. It tries to fill slots that already hold the same item, otherwise it places the item in the slots right after it. This works for shift-clicking and automatic insertion, and keeps the individual crates on the shelf more organized.[9]
    • Illager loot changed: fusiliers and bulwarks now respect looting, and commandos no longer drop emeralds.[9]
Watch out: Because extracting conveyors switched from tick rate to stack size, existing conveyors need to be adjusted again.[9]

    Fixes in 12.4.2-194

    • The mixer no longer accidentally crafts a lingering awkward potion.[9]
    • Catwalks now work properly when used with a hammer, and the Engineer's Crafting Table has corrected shift-click behavior.[9]
    • Chutes accept item input from the side, and shelves no longer crash when accessed from unexpected sides.[9]
    • Engineer illagers now drop their raid banner.[9]
    • Windows used in multiblocks are less directionally dependent, and the backpack antenna now visually disconnects from wires.[9]

    12.4.1-193

    • Lanterns and cage lamps gained a variable light level, which you set with a screwdriver. Handy for some mood lighting in your factory![10]
    • Fixed a crash when catwalk stairs were rotated with a hammer.[10]
