What is Just Another Grass Seed?

Just Another Grass Seed is included in this pack at version 21.1.5, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 1.0.1 or earlier, so it's a long-standing piece of the mod list.[1]

The mod's item is Grass Seed. You meet it right at the start of the pack, because the pack's opening chapter, "the_beginning", has a quest a quest in "?" whose task is to obtain it. That quest unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[2]

So in terms of progression, think of this as an early-game mod. The pack's first questline points you to it straight away.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe how Grass Seed is obtained or used, and no guidebook or platform description was available for this mod. Check in-game or in the quest itself before relying on any specific mechanic.

How do you get started with Just Another Grass Seed?

3 parts

Getting going with this mod is quick. Everything starts with Grass Seed, and the pack has its own way for you to get it.[3]

Step 1: Get Grass Seed by sifting

In this pack, Grass Seed comes from sifting dirt. The pack added this sifting recipe, and Grass Seed is one of its many possible results. The same recipe also gives crop seeds and saplings. The sources here do not show any drop chances.[3]

Grass Seed is one of the possible results of this sifting recipe, which the pack added.

Once you have a seed, check your quest book. The Beginning chapter has a quest, a quest in "?", whose task is to obtain Grass Seed. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[2]

Step 2: Make Fake Grass Blocks

The pack adds two shapeless crafting recipes for Fake Grass Block. Use whichever one is easier for you to set up right now.[3]

Step 3: Switch biome looks in the stonecutter

The pack adds stonecutting recipes that turn the plain Fake Grass Block into biome variants, such as Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow) and Fake Grass Block (Desert). The other variants are Badlands, Birch, Cheery, Dark Forest, Jungle, Mangrove, Meadow, Mushroom, Ocean, Pale Garden, Sparse Jungle and Swamp.[3]

Example: the plain block becomes the Plains variant in the stonecutter.

It works both ways. Put any variant back into the stonecutter to get the plain block again, so you are never stuck with a look you don't want.[3]

Unverified What Grass Seed does once you have it, such as how it is used or placed, is not shown by the sources here. The mod has no in-jar guide and no item descriptions in its lang file, so check it in game before relying on any behavior.

How does Just Another Grass Seed work?

3 parts

Just Another Grass Seed is a small mod in this pack. The recipes the pack adds for Grass Seed and Fake Grass Block are what the sources show, so this section covers those and stays short.[3]

Getting Grass Seed

Grass Seed is one of the possible results of a sifting recipe that the pack adds. It shares its result list with several other seeds and saplings, such as wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds and bamboo. The sifting recipe is below.[3]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

This sifting recipe is added by the pack and lists Grass Seed among its possible results.

Making Fake Grass Blocks

The pack adds two shapeless crafting recipes for Fake Grass Block. Pick whichever fits the materials you have on hand.[3]

Biome variants

The plain Fake Grass Block can be turned into biome variants in a stonecutter, using recipes the pack adds. Variants include Fake Grass Block (Desert), Fake Grass Block (Jungle), Fake Grass Block (Mangrove), Fake Grass Block (Meadow), Fake Grass Block (Mushroom) and Fake Grass Block (Ocean). You also get Fake Grass Block (Badlands), Fake Grass Block (Birch), Fake Grass Block (Cheery), Fake Grass Block (Dark_forest) and Fake Grass Block (Pale_garden).[3]

Fake Grass Block (Desert)Added by the pack

Stonecutting

Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/jags_desert_fake_grass_block

Example: the plain block cut into the Desert variant in a stonecutter, a recipe added by the pack.

The stonecutter works in reverse too. Variants such as Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow), Fake Grass Block (Sparse_jungle) and Fake Grass Block (Swamp) can each be cut back into the plain Fake Grass Block, so you can change a look without losing the block.[3]

Tip: Because the variants convert back to the plain block, you can keep a stack of plain Fake Grass Blocks and cut them into whichever variant you want when you build.[3]

How do you progress through Just Another Grass Seed?

3 parts

In this pack, Just Another Grass Seed has a short path rather than tiers: get the Grass Seed, then craft Fake Grass Blocks and swap between their biome variants.[2][3]

Step 1: Get the Grass Seed

The Beginning chapter of the pack's quest book has a quest with an item task for Grass Seed. It unlocks after an earlier quest, and it has no title in the pack files, so it shows up as a quest in "?".[2]

The pack also adds a sifting recipe that can give you the seed when you sift dirt with the Mechanical Cloth Mesh. The same recipe drops many other seeds and plants, so Grass Seed is one possible result among several. The sources don't give drop chances, so I can't tell you how much dirt to expect to sift.[3]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Added by the pack. Grass Seed is one of several possible outputs.

Step 2: Craft Fake Grass Blocks

The pack gives you two ways to craft the base Fake Grass Block. The first turns a regular grass block into a fake one.[3]

Shapeless (kubejs)

Recipe id: ftb:fake_grass

The second route doesn't need a grass block to start with.[3]

Step 3: Switch biome variants

Once you have a base Fake Grass Block, the stonecutter turns it into biome variants. Examples include Fake Grass Block (Plains), Fake Grass Block (Snow), Fake Grass Block (Swamp), Fake Grass Block (Desert) and Fake Grass Block (Mushroom). The pack also has stonecutting recipes for the Badlands, Birch, Cheery, Dark Forest, Jungle, Mangrove, Meadow, Ocean, Pale Garden and Sparse Jungle variants.[3]

Every variant is stonecut from the base block like this.

Every variant can also be stonecut back into the base block.[3]

How does Just Another Grass Seed work with other mods?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.15.0 guide

This pack ties Just Another Grass Seed into several other mods through recipes it adds itself. These are the connections the pack's recipes and quests confirm.[4]

Getting Grass Seed by sifting dirt

The pack adds a Create Sifter recipe that sifts Dirt with a Mechanical Cloth Mesh. Grass Seed is one of the possible results.[4]

The same sift also gives seeds and crops from other mods, plus some vanilla items. The sources do not show drop chances.[4]

Sifting (createsifter)

Recipe id: ftb:sifting/minecraft_dirt_with_cloth_mesh

Added by the pack: sifting dirt can give you Grass Seed.

Fake Grass Block with Create

The pack adds a shapeless crafting recipe for the Fake Grass Block. It connects the mod to Create, since the recipe uses Super Glue.[4]

Grass Seed and Ender IO

The pack also adds a Lychee item-inside recipe, grass_seed_from_dirt_water, that uses Grass Seed together with Grains of Infinity from Ender IO. The recipe dump lists no output for it.[4]

In the "the_beginning" quest chapter, quest a quest in "?" has you hand in Grass Seed. It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter.[5]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Just Another Grass Seed?

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

In this pack, the mod shows up in one quest, and it lives in the "the_beginning" chapter. It's an early-game quest, so you'll run into it near the start of your run.[6]

The quest is a quest in "?", and it has no title in the pack files. Its task is an item task: you hand in Grass Seed. That's all the quest asks for.[6]

It comes after the quest with the id 5FCEA8229BB6955C in the same chapter, so you need to finish that one first before this one unlocks.[6]

Unverified The sources don't say what the previous quest asks for, whether this quest gives a reward, or how you obtain Grass Seed in this pack. Check the in-game quest book for those details.
