What is FTB Materials?
1 part
FTB Materials is the mod that supplies a lot of the raw and processed material items you will be asked to hand in as you play. This pack ships version 21.1.4. The sources show it as a set of chunks, dusts, plates, ingots, gems and wires, such as Copper Chunk, Steel Ingot and Brass Plate.[1][2][3]
In the quest data it has no chapter of its own. Its items show up as quest tasks inside the chapters of other mods, so it is for anyone following the questbook through the tech and resource chapters.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
Where you meet it in the questbook
- Resources and You: early material quests ask for chunks such as Lead Chunk, Tin Chunk, Diamond Chunk and Redstone Chunk, plus dusts like Bauxite Dust and Niter Dust.[2]
- Modern Industrialization: you hand in items such as Bronze Ingot, Steel Ingot, Titanium Ingot and Tungsten Ingot. The stainless steel dust quest comes after the chromium dust quest, and the stainless steel ingot quest comes after that.[4]
- Irons, Gems and Jewelery: ingots like Silver Ingot, Brass Ingot and Platinum Ingot, plus Ruby Gem and Sapphire Gem.[5]
- Mekanism: Osmium Ingot, Uranium Ingot, Fluorite Gem, Refined Obsidian Ingot and Lithium Dust.[6]
- Create: a plate quest accepts an iron, copper or gold plate and also asks for the mechanical press. After it come quests for Brass Ingot and then Brass Plate.[3]
- Immersive Engineering: tasks include Iron Plate, Copper Wire, Steel Ingot and Coal Coke Dust.[7]
Unverified The AE2 and MFFS quest data was cut off in the sources, so any FTB Materials items in those chapters are unconfirmed. How each item is obtained, and any pack-specific recipe or config changes for this mod, are not covered here.
How do you get started with FTB Materials?
5 parts
FTB Materials supplies the metals, dusts, plates and gems that many quest chapters ask for, from Create to Immersive Engineering to AE2. The pack adds or changes many of the recipes that make them. Here is the order I'd go in.[3][4][7][8][9]
Plates first
The early Create quest wants an Iron Plate, Copper Plate or Gold Plate together with a Mechanical Press. The pack adds pressing recipes that turn ingots into these plates, so this is your first milestone. The quest is "Plates" quest.[3][9]
Pressing (create)
- any copper ingot

Next, Copper Wire is cut from a copper plate with Create. The Immersive Engineering quest "Metal Plates & Wires" quest asks for an iron plate and copper wire, so you'll want both.[7][9]
Cutting (create)
- any copper plate

Brass
The Create chapter follows the plate quest with Brass Ingot ("The Brass Age" quest), then Brass Plate ("Brass Plate" quest). The pack changed the brass mixing recipe, so use this one rather than any default you remember. The plate is pressed from a brass ingot.[3][9]

Raw metals into ingots
The Beginning chapter asks for a Zinc Ingot ("Where is the Zinc?" quest). The pack adds both smelting and blasting recipes that turn crushed zinc into ingots. It does the same for lead, nickel, osmium, platinum, silver and uranium.[9][10]
Bronze
The pack adds an alloy smelter recipe that makes Bronze Ingot from copper and tin ingots, and another from dusts. In the Modern Industrialization chapter, bronze comes right after the copper rod, plate and bolt quest ("Forge Ahead" quest then "Bronze Ingot" quest).[4][9]

Steel
Steel Ingot shows up in quests in the Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism and MFFS chapters. The Immersive Engineering chapter also asks for Coal Coke Dust ("Coke Dust" quest), and the pack changed the Create crushing recipe that makes coke dust from a coal coke gem. Steel is a good mid-early goal to work towards.[4][6][7][9][11]

How does FTB Materials work?
4 parts
FTB Materials is a materials mod, and the sources for this pack show it only as items and crafting recipes. They do not explain machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling for it, so this section covers what they do show: how the metal items convert between their forms.[9]
Everything runs through crafting recipes
Each metal in the sources, such as aluminum, antimony, brass and bronze, has its items linked by ordinary crafting-table recipes, either shaped or shapeless. These cover ingots, nuggets, storage blocks, raw ore and raw ore blocks, and dusts and tiny dusts. You can move between those forms in a crafting grid.[9]
The pack has changed these recipes, and the recipe dump marks them as changed by the pack. What you see in your recipe viewer is the pack's version, not the mod's default.[9]
Tag-based inputs
Aluminum, antimony and bronze recipes accept any item carrying the matching common tag instead of one specific item. For example, the Block of Aluminum recipe takes any aluminum ingot from the common ingot tag. An ingot from another mod that carries that tag is therefore a valid input. Brass recipes are different: they ask for FTB Materials' own brass items.[9]
Crafting Shaped
9 × any aluminum ingot
Recipe id: ftbmaterials:aluminum_block
Tag-based: accepts any item in the common aluminum ingot tag.
Brass uses the mod's own brass ingot directly.
Going back down again
Compacting is reversible. The sources show recipes that turn a block back into an ingot, an ingot back into a nugget, a raw ore block back into raw ore, and a dust back into tiny dust. Brass and aluminum both have the full set, so you can compact for storage and unpack later.[9]

Pack-specific recipes for FTB Materials items
The pack also adds or changes recipes from other mods that produce FTB Materials items. Invar Gear is crafted from Modern Industrialization parts, and this recipe is added by the pack.[9]

How do you progress through FTB Materials?
6 parts
FTB Materials supplies the pack's shared metals, gems and dusts, so its items show up in quests across many chapters. This section walks through them in a sensible order, using the quests that ask for each material and the in-pack recipes that make it: raw resources first, then plates and alloys, then steel, then the late-game metals.[2][4][5][9]
Stage 1: raw resources
The first materials quests in the resources chapter ask for raw resource items. You hand in Copper Chunk, Tin Chunk, Lead Chunk, Gold Chunk, Diamond Chunk, Emerald Chunk and Redstone Chunk. You also hand in Bauxite Dust, Niter Dust and Sulfur Dust. Quests such as "Copper Chunk" quest (copper chunk) and "Tin Chunk" quest (tin chunk) are good examples.[2]
Sulfur has several routes. The pack added crushing recipes for sulfur ore in Create, EnderIO and Actually Additions. It also changed the coal SAG milling recipe so coal gives both Coal Dust and sulfur dust, and it changed the Create blaze rod crushing recipe so it gives sulfur dust.[9]
Stage 2: ingots, plates and alloys
Most of the common ingots have pack-added smelting and blasting recipes that take either dusts or Create crushed ore. That covers Lead Ingot, Nickel Ingot, Osmium Ingot, Platinum Ingot, Silver Ingot, Uranium Ingot and Zinc Ingot. Quests ask for several of these, for example "Where is the Zinc?" quest (zinc), "Lead Banding" quest (lead) and "Silver Banding" quest (silver).[5][9][10]
One example of the pack's dust-to-ingot recipes, added by the pack.
Plates come from Create pressing. The pack added recipes that press iron, copper, gold and brass ingots into Iron Plate, Copper Plate, Gold Plate and Brass Plate. The Create quest "Plates" quest asks for one of the iron, copper or gold plates together with the mechanical press. Brass follows in "The Brass Age" quest, then the brass plate in "Brass Plate" quest.[3][9]

The pack changed the Create mixing recipe for Brass Ingot, so use the recipe below rather than anything you remember from the base mod.[9]

- any copper ingot
- any zinc ingot
Recipe id: create:mixing/brass_ingot
Bronze Ingot has its own quests. In the Modern Industrialization chapter, "Bronze Ingot" quest comes after the copper rod and plate quest "Forge Ahead" quest. The irons, gems and jewelery chapter has another one, "Bronze Banding" quest. The pack added alloy smelter recipes for bronze from copper and tin dusts or from copper and tin ingots. It also added smelting and blasting for Bronze Dust.[4][5][9]
Alloy Smelter (extended_industrialization)
- 3× any copper ingot
- any tin ingot
Recipe id: ftb:bronze_ingot_from_ingots
Stage 3: coke and steel
Steel is the first big milestone shared by several mods. The Modern Industrialization quest "The Gears of Industry" quest asks for Steel Ingot. Immersive Engineering ("Steel Ingot" quest), Mekanism ("Carbon Infusion" quest) and MFFS ("Welcome to MFFS" quest) ask for it too. The pack added smelting and blasting recipes that turn Steel Dust into steel ingots.[4][6][7][9][11]
Coal coke runs alongside steel. Quests ask for Coal Coke Gem and Coal Coke Dust ("Creating Oil from Dust" quest, "Coke Dust" quest). The pack lets you crush a coke gem or a Block of Coal Coke into dust in Mekanism or Create. It also lets you smelt or blast the dust back into a gem. A shapeless recipe turns a coke block into a gem.[4][7][9]
The Immersive Engineering quest "Arc Furnace" quest also involves the Block of Steel.[7]
Gems and silicon
Ruby Gem and Sapphire Gem have their own quests ("Ruby" quest and "Sapphire" quest). The pack added recipes to crush the ores into gems in Create, EnderIO and Actually Additions. Smelting or blasting the matching dust also gives the gem, and the blocks decompress back into gems.[5][9]
Silicon feeds the AE2 chapter ("Silicon" quest). The pack changed the smelting and blasting of certus quartz dust so it produces this silicon.[8][9]
Stage 4: late-game metals
The Modern Industrialization chapter carries the progression furthest. "Chromium Dust" quest asks for Chromium Dust. After that, "Stainless Steel Dust" quest asks for Stainless Steel Dust, and "Stainless Steel Ingot" quest asks for the Stainless Steel Ingot. The pack also added Actually Additions crushing recipes that turn chromium plates and stainless steel plates into those dusts.[4][9]
Further quests cover Tungsten Ingot ("Tungsten Ingot" quest), Titanium Ingot ("Titanium Ingot" quest) and Raw Platinum ("Raw Platinum" quest). The iridium line starts with Tiny Iridium Dust ("Iridium Tiny Dust" quest) and leads to Platinum Ingot ("Platinum Ingot" quest). Elsewhere in the chapter come Raw Iridium ("Raw Iridium" quest) and Plutonium Dust ("Plutonium Dust" quest).[4]
Iridium dust and tiny iridium dust come from Create washing of iridium clumps. Raw iridium and raw platinum come from crushing the ores in EnderIO or Actually Additions. The pack added all of these recipes.[9]
Splashing (create)
- any iridium clump

Mekanism and other side branches
The Mekanism chapter has its own branch. "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest asks for Osmium Ingot, and "So You Want to Build a Nuclear Reactor" quest follows with sulfur dust, Fluorite Gem and a uranium ingot. A refined obsidian line asks for Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust ("Refined Obsidian Dust" quest). It then moves to Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot ("Refined Ingots" quest). Another quest asks for Lithium Dust ("Lithium Dust" quest).[6]
Obsidian dust can be made by crushing obsidian in Create or by SAG milling it in EnderIO. The pack changed both recipes. In Create, the Obsidian Plate ("Obsidian Plates" quest) comes from a sequenced assembly recipe that the pack also changed.[3][9]
Sequenced Assembly (create)

A few other chapters pull in materials too. Nickel appears in the Oritech chapter ("Welcome To Oritech!" quest). Silver appears in the Occultism chapter ("Your First Ritual" quest), and the pack changed the Ars Ocultas silver transmutation recipe, which takes a gold ingot among its inputs.[9][12][13]
How does FTB Materials work with other mods?
7 parts
FTB Materials is the pack's shared supply of metals, dusts, plates and gems, so you'll meet its items in recipes and quests from many other mods. Here's where the connections show up.[4][9]
Create
The pack changed how Create crushes Asurine and Veridium. Asurine gives you Crushed Raw Zinc and a Zinc Nugget, and Veridium gives you Crushed Raw Copper and a Copper Nugget. Splashing those crushed ores also gives you nuggets from this mod, and the same goes for Crushed Raw Uranium, which gives a Uranium Nugget.[9]
Two Create sequenced assemblies are changed by the pack as well. The Precision Mechanism uses Gold Plate, and the sturdy sheet ends in an Obsidian Plate.[9]

The Create quest chapter follows the same path: it asks for plates alongside the Mechanical Press ("Plates" quest), then the obsidian plate ("Obsidian Plates" quest), the brass ingot ("The Brass Age" quest) and the brass plate ("Brass Plate" quest).[3]
Mekanism
The pack adds an ore-processing chain for several FTB Materials metals. Aluminum, antimony, copper and gold all have the full set. Oxygen purifying turns ores, raw materials, shards or raw storage blocks into clumps. Crystallizing makes crystals, and hydrogen chloride injecting makes shards. Iridium clump recipes follow the same purifying pattern.[9]

The pack also adds a stonecutting conversion from Fluorite Ore to Fluorite Ore. In the Mekanism quests, "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest asks for an osmium ingot. "So You Want to Build a Nuclear Reactor" quest covers sulfur dust, fluorite gem and uranium ingot. "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest and "Refined Ingots" quest cover the obsidian and refined obsidian steps.[6][9]
Modern Industrialization and Extended Industrialization
The Modern Industrialization quest chapter leans heavily on this mod. It asks for plates, rods, bronze, steel, coal coke, ruby dust, chromium dust, stainless steel, tungsten, titanium and plutonium dust, among others. Early entries include "Forge Ahead" quest, followed by "Bronze Ingot" quest and "The Gears of Industry" quest.[4]
The pack changed the Extended Industrialization macerator recipe that turns an Silver Curved Plate into Silver Dust. It also added a Modern Industrialization mixer recipe for Budding Monazite GeOre:[9]
Mixer (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:budding_monazite_from_dusts
Applied Energistics 2 and ExtendedAE
ExtendedAE's Quartz Blend gives Silicon by smelting, blasting or Mekanism enriching, and the pack changed all three recipes. Decompressing an Block of Silicon also gives you that silicon. The AE2 chapter has a quest for it in "Silicon" quest.[8][9]
The pack added AE2 transform recipes for Block of Aluminum, Budding Osmium GeOre and the Xychorium gems (blue, dark, green, light and red). The Xychorium recipes use this mod's Quartz Dust.[9]
GeOre
The pack added smelting and blasting recipes that turn GeOre shards into FTB Materials items: Tiny Coal, Monazite Dust, Ruby Gem, Sapphire Gem and Tiny Tungsten Dust.[9]
Magic mods and extras
- The pack changed the Ars Nouveau imbuement recipe that makes Silver Ingot. It uses Occultism items alongside Ars Nouveau's Manipulation Essence.[9]
- A Malum void favor recipe added by the pack turns an Block of Silver into an Iesnium Ingot. The Occultism quest chapter also asks for a silver ingot in "Your First Ritual" quest.[9][12]
- The pack's Explorer's Compass recipe uses this mod's Diamond Gear and Netherite Nugget.[9]
Shaped (kubejs)

Quests in other chapters
- Immersive Engineering: "Metal Plates & Wires" quest (iron plate and copper wire), "Steel Ingot" quest (steel ingot), "Coke Dust" quest (coal coke dust) and "Arc Furnace" quest (steel block).[7]
- MFFS: "Welcome to MFFS" quest asks for a steel ingot. Oritech: "Welcome To Oritech!" quest asks for a nickel ingot.[11][13]
- The Beginning: "Where is the Zinc?" quest asks for a zinc ingot.[10]
- Resources and You asks for chunks and dusts such as Lead Chunk ("Lead Chunk" quest) and Bauxite Dust ("Bauxite Dust" quest).[2]
- Irons, Gems and Jewelery asks for ingots and gems such as Silver Ingot ("Silver Banding" quest) and Ruby Gem ("Ruby" quest).[5]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use FTB Materials?
6 parts
FTB Materials items show up in the quest book of this pack as the metals, dusts, plates and gems you hand in while working through other mods' chapters. The quests have no titles in the pack data, so I describe each one by what it asks for. Where I give an order, it comes from the quests' prerequisites.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
Modern Industrialization
This chapter has the most FTB Materials quests. You start with "Forge Ahead" quest, which wants Copper Rod, Iron Plate and Copper Plate, plus Modern Industrialization's copper bolt and curved copper plate. "Bronze Ingot" quest follows it and asks for a Bronze Ingot.[4]
"The Gears of Industry" quest asks for a Steel Ingot and a steel machine casing. "Creating Oil from Dust" quest asks for both Coal Coke Gem and Coal Coke Dust. "Ruby Dust" quest asks for Ruby Dust.[4]
The stainless steel line runs in order. "Chromium Dust" quest wants Chromium Dust. "Stainless Steel Dust" quest then wants Stainless Steel Dust, and "Stainless Steel Ingot" quest finishes it with a Stainless Steel Ingot.[4]
Later quests cover rarer metals. "Tungsten Ingot" quest asks for a Tungsten Ingot, "Raw Platinum" quest for Raw Platinum and "Titanium Ingot" quest for a Titanium Ingot. These three share the same prerequisite. "Iridium Tiny Dust" quest asks for Tiny Iridium Dust and unlocks "Platinum Ingot" quest, a Platinum Ingot. Separately, "Raw Iridium" quest wants Raw Iridium and "Plutonium Dust" quest wants Plutonium Dust.[4]
Resources and You
This chapter is a set of single-item raw material quests. Each one needs two earlier quests done first. They ask for Copper Chunk ("Copper Chunk" quest), Tin Chunk ("Tin Chunk" quest), Lead Chunk ("Lead Chunk" quest), Gold Chunk ("Gold Chunk" quest), Diamond Chunk ("Diamond Chunk" quest), Emerald Chunk ("Emerald Chunk" quest) and Redstone Chunk ("Redstone Chunk" quest). The dust quests ask for Bauxite Dust ("Bauxite Dust" quest), Niter Dust ("Niter Dust" quest) and Sulfur Dust ("Sulfur Dust" quest).[2]
Irons, Gems and Jewelery
Five ingot quests share one prerequisite, so you can do them in any order once it is complete: Bronze Ingot ("Bronze Banding" quest), Brass Ingot ("Brass Banding" quest), Silver Ingot ("Silver Banding" quest), Lead Ingot ("Lead Banding" quest) and Platinum Ingot ("Platinum Banding" quest). The gem quests are "Sapphire" quest for a Sapphire Gem and "Ruby" quest for a Ruby Gem. They share a different prerequisite.[5]
Mekanism
The chapter opens with "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest, which asks for an Osmium Ingot alongside one more item the data doesn't name. "So You Want to Build a Nuclear Reactor" quest follows with Sulfur Dust, Fluorite Gem and Uranium Ingot. Other quests here pair FTB Materials items with Mekanism ones: "Carbon Infusion" quest wants a Steel Ingot plus enriched iron, and "Chemical Oxidizer" quest wants Sulfur Dust plus a chemical oxidizer.[6]
The obsidian line goes in order. "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest asks for Obsidian Dust, Refined Obsidian Dust and enriched refined obsidian. "Refined Ingots" quest then asks for Refined Obsidian Ingot, Refined Glowstone Ingot and an osmium compressor. "Lithium Dust" quest is a separate quest for Lithium Dust.[6]
Create and Immersive Engineering
In Create, "Plates" quest accepts an Iron Plate, Copper Plate or Gold Plate, and also wants a mechanical press. It leads to "The Brass Age" quest, a Brass Ingot, and then "Brass Plate" quest, a Brass Plate. "Obsidian Plates" quest separately asks for an Obsidian Plate.[3]
In Immersive Engineering, "Metal Plates & Wires" quest asks for Iron Plate and Copper Wire. "Steel Ingot" quest asks for a Steel Ingot and "Coke Dust" quest for Coal Coke Dust. "Arc Furnace" quest is an observation quest with a long list of Immersive Engineering blocks, a cauldron and a Block of Steel.[7]
One-off quests in other chapters
- AE2: "Silicon" quest asks for Silicon and printed silicon.[8]
- MFFS: "Welcome to MFFS" quest asks for a Steel Ingot and a focus matrix.[11]
- Occultism: "Your First Ritual" quest is an observation quest that lists copper, iron and gold ingots, a Silver Ingot and a bound foliot book.[12]
- Oritech: "Welcome To Oritech!" quest asks for a Nickel Ingot and one more item the data doesn't name.[13]
- The Beginning: "Where is the Zinc?" quest asks for a Zinc Ingot.[10]
