Modern Industrialization
144 quests, with the items each asks for and where they come from in FTB Skies 2.
- The Start of Modern Industrialization
Now that you can make iron ingots, you can craft a Forge Hammer! This will allow you to smash all varieties of ore and even process the ingots into plates, rings, rods, and other materials. While it is easier to do, this method of making materials is considered very inefficient, due to the cost of remaking the hammers. You should progress onto machine processing with a Steam Macerator as soon as you're able. Note: You can also pulverize logs into sawdust for early cardboard boxes. These can be handy for lots of things!
Asks for:Forge Hammer
- Forge Ahead
After you've crafted a Forge Hammer, you'll want to make some Iron Plates as well as some Copper Components which will be used in a multitude of crafting recipes. You can also use these to make one of the best mining tools in the early game!
Needs: The Start of Modern IndustrializationAsks for:Copper Plate,
Copper Rod,
Iron Plate,
Copper Bolt,
Copper Curved Plate
- Powering Up
There are many ways to power Modern Industrialization machines (MI for short)! It's important to know that in FTB Skies 2, the power systems are unified to allow you to use and produce FE or MI energy. For example, you can power MI machines with Mekanism generators and vice versa. This gives you the freedom to progress however you'd, like while still enjoying the best parts of MI!
Needs: Forge Ahead - A Superior Tool
Silk Touch is important for maximizing your ore outputs. By processing them in block form, you will receive more products and byproducts than via standard mining. Luckily, MI provides a solution to this! The miraculous Steam Mining Drill can mine a 3x3 area AND has a Silk Touch mode. For the recipe, try mixing together some invar in a jar... To use it, you'll need to provide it Water by just having a bucket in your inventory or by right-clicking a water source block. To power the drill, open your inventory and drag a fuel source like coal over top of the Steam Mining Drill and then Right-click it to deposit the fuel. You can change the Drill mode by Shift + Right-clicking it. Yes, it does work with Ultimine!
Needs: Forge AheadAsks for:Steam Mining Drill
- Bronze Ingot
Your first alloy you'll want to make is Bronze. There are several ways to do this, including just mixing dusts in a Tempered Jar. It's a very important alloy for progression, and will open your path to MI's Bronze Age!
Needs: Forge AheadAsks for:Bronze Ingot
- Bronze Boiler
Before we can use machines that need power, we'll need to power them using Steam. Steam produced via Mekanism should work as well, but you will need to make sure that it is LIQUID steam. If you plan on generating Steam using MI, the Bronze Boiler will be the first method of producing enough Steam to power your bronze age tech. For it to work, you'll need to first provide it Water, either manually via buckets, or via a Water Pump. It also needs burnable Fuel like coal, which can be hoppered or piped in. Once you have both Water and Fuel pumping into the Bronze Boiler, you can pump out Steam from the output face with the square on it (which can also be changed with a Wrench).
Needs: Bronze IngotAsks for:Bronze Boiler
- Coke Oven
MI's Steam Coke Oven is much faster than the Immersive Engineering variant, however, it needs to be powered with Steam to operate. This is another multiblock, just like the regular Coke Oven, except this one needs Item Hatches and Fluid Hatches to function properly. The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 multiblock made mostly out of Bricks. While it may seem like a hassle, these are definitely worth making! The Coke Oven will need one input for Steam and one for coal. This will produce Creosote Oil and Coal Coke.
Needs: Bronze BoilerAsks for:Bricks,
Bronze Item Input Hatch,
Bronze Item Output Hatch,
Coke Oven
- MI Pipes
Now that you have bronze, you'll be able to make MI Pipes. These are highly versatile and absolutely worth using. You can stack up to three Pipes in the same block space. They can also be died so they won't connect to each other, and their connection states can be configured with the MI Wrench You can go even further by creating a Facade out of any block to blend pipes seamlessly into your builds. To do this, Sneak + Right-click on the block you want the Pipes to display as, then right-click any Pipe in the world to apply the Facade. While this does consume blocks from your inventory, it can easily be popped back off by Sneak + Right-clicking with the Facade with the MI Wrench. To make copying settings of pipes easier, you have been given a Pipe Config Card. With this tool, you can copy settings of a Pipe onto the card, then place it in your offhand. Any Pipe you place like this will automatically copy the settings on the card.
Needs: Bronze Ingot - Bronze Mixer
Mixers are used to combine multiple components and sometimes liquids into new ingredients. Make sure to pay attention to the tier of mixer required for recipes! 2 eu/t is a Steam Mixer. 4 eu/t is a Steel Mixer. Any higher than that will require an Electric Mixer or better.
Needs: Bronze BoilerAsks for:Bronze Mixer
- Bronze Cutting Machine
The Cutting Machine can make some items more efficiently or automatically. It will also give you 6 planks per log when cutting wood. It's important to note that all operations with the cutting saw take a small amount of Lubricant, so automating it is advised.
Needs: Bronze MixerAsks for:Bronze Cutting Machine
- Crushing & Cutting
The first few basic machines you'll want to make are the Bronze Furnace and the Macerator. The Bronze Furnace is powered by Steam to smelt items faster than a regular vanilla furnace. The Macerator is crucial to providing ore multiplication, as well as getting different byproducts from several items.

The Wrench is probably one of the most useful tools you'll be using during your playthrough. This tool helps configure pipes, rotate blocks, and can even help you build multiblocks! By holding the Wrench and looking at the base machine of a multiblock, it will create holograms of blocks to show you how to build it! Tip: Place it in your off-hand when building multiblocks!
Needs: Bronze Ingot - Steam Blast Furnace
The Steam Blast Furnace is your first major MI multiblock. You'll need to give it Steam and uncooked steel dust for it to make Steel Ingots. In addition to the controller block, you'll need a fluid and item Input hatch as well as an item Output hatch as shown in the quest. The remaining blocks should be fire clay bricks. You can configure the inputs and outputs in many different ways. Holding the wrench or an input/output hatch should show you where their valid placements are.

- The Gears of Industry
Typically, you would progress into the Bronze Age first, making Coal Coke and Steam for early power. While this is still a perfectly valid path that is still outlined in the MI guidebook, you can also just jump directly to Steel by using any of the steel production methods available in the pack. This could mean using Mekanism's Metallurgic Infuser, Immersive Engineering's Blast Furnace, or just sticking with MI to craft it as well. For those without much experience in MI, you can never have enough steel. Start cooking. :)
Needs: The Start of Modern Industrialization, Steam Blast FurnaceAsks for:Steel Ingot,

The HP Large Steam Boiler can produce up to 2048 mb/t of Steam. HP Steam is worth 8 times more than regular steam, so each mb will produce 8 EU/t instead of 1 EU/t! As with all boilers, it needs to run continuously to reach maximum efficiency. It only accepts HP Water or HP Heavy Water.

- Large Steam Turbine
The Large Steam Turbine converts either Regular Steam or HP Steam into energy. It generates up to 16,384 EU/t. However, it won't return regular or HP water. To recycle HP water, you'll need to use a Heat Exchanger

Large Steam Turbine,
Stainless Steel Pipe Machine Casing
- Heat Exchanger
To be able to recycle our HP water, we'll need to make the Heat Exchanger. The Heat Exchanger is a multiblock machine that cools items or liquids down to produce other items or liquids. We'll be using this to recycle our HP water, but this can also be used as a more efficient way to cool Hot Ingots! Pressurizing water into HP water consumes a lot of energy, and the Large Steam Turbine will not return it. You can use the Heat Exchanger to recover the HP water for another cycle. If you use the recipe that takes Steam and HP water as inputs, it will output regular water and HP Steam that we can use for power. Note: Be cautious of the recipe amounts, as you might need higher tiers of hatches to meet the recipe requirements. You'll know your hatches are too small if the recipes fail to start processing. This machine is 3x3x5 multiblock, with the middle section built out of specific casings. One wall is made up of Heatproof Machine Casings and the other of Frostproof Machine Casings. The item and fluid hatches can only go in certain spots, so make sure to use the Wrench to help place them.

- 1.024 GIGAWATTS!?
Superconductor Ingots are used to make the highest tier of energy transfer cables available. These cables can transfer an astounding 1.024G EU/t. This metal is also used for many of the late game technology recipes. To make these, you'll need to start by Mixing the dusts of Iridium, Annealed Copper, Yttrium, and Neodymium together in a mixer. This will give us Superconductor Dust, which we can smelt in an Electric Blast Furnace into a Superconductor Hot Ingots. Cool that down in a Vacuum Freezer or Heat Exchanger and you'll get a Superconductor Ingot!
Needs: Raw IridiumAsks for:Superconductor Ingot
- Nuclear Alloy Plate
To make a Nuclear Reactor, you'll need Nuclear Alloy Plates. These are crafted using Blastproof Ingots, Beryllium Ingots, and Cadmium Ingots. To get Beryllium, you'll need to centrifuge Emeralds. You should already have some Cadmium ready to go from processing Monazite. Once you have Nuclear Mixed Plates, blow them up in an Implosion Compressor to create Nuclear Alloy Plates. You'll need plenty of these for your reactors so it's worth setting up a good automation line for them.
Needs: Highly Advanced MachinesAsks for:Nuclear Alloy Plate
- Nuclear Reactor
A lot goes into making a Nuclear Reactor, and there are many types. To explain the process, check out the Reactor Components and Reactor Mechanics quests linked to this one! Nuclear Reactors produce a lot of energy primarily as Steam. Unlike most other Nuclear Reactors, this one does not explode or emit radiation.

Nuclear Alloy Casing,
Nuclear Fluid Hatch,
Nuclear Item Hatch,
Nuclear Reactor
- Reactor Components
There are a lot of Reactor Components to keep track of, so here is a list of each of them and their function(s)! Fuel Rods: These come in many varieties, and are your main nuclear force. They are responsible for providing the reactor with energy. Quad Rods last much longer than Single Rods or Dual Rods. Their emissivity decreases with temperature. Plates: A general-use conductive and reflective surface. has a high change of converting incoming Fast Neutrons into Thermal Neutrons. Heat Exchanger: A component designed for managing internal reactor temperature. Has a high thermal conductivity, meaning it can take heat from adjacent sources and send it to adjacent destinations. Water: Comes in several varieties. Pressurized versions are more energy-dense, and Heavy Water produces Tritium instead of Deuterium. Produces Deuterium when absorbing a Fast Neutron and increases in temperature (turning to Steam) when absorbing a Thermal Neutron. Cadmium Control Rod: A special component that has a high chance of absorbing incoming Thermal Neutrons.
Needs: Nuclear ReactorAsks for:Small Heat Exchanger
- Uranium Fuel Rod (Whose Ranium?)
The most basic available reactor fuel is a regular Uranium Fuel Rod. It requires no fancy processing, but also outputs the least amount of energy. However, its simplicity makes it appealing to start with.
Needs: Titanium Drills, Nuclear ReactorAsks for:Uranium Fuel Rod
- Plutonium Dust
Plutonium is a manufactured material from Depleted Fuel Rods. To get a lot of it, you might want to invest in a Breeder Reactor. A Breeder Reactor is generally one which seeks to process fuel rods as quickly as possible with little regard for efficiency. Of course, you'll need to be generating Uranium at a quick enough rate to supply it. Plutonium rates (per rod) are as follows (Tiny Dust in -> Tiny Dust out): Uranium: 0 -> 27 LE Uranium: 0 -> 24 HE Uranium: 0 -> 18 LE MOX: 9 -> 30 (+21) HE MOX: 27 -> 36 (+9)
Needs: Uranium Fuel RodAsks for:Plutonium Dust
- HE MOX Fuel
MOX Fuel is generally superior to regular Uranium Fuel, with an added benefit that it produces more Plutonium than it takes to make it. A 1.33x surplus, to be precise. This does NOT make it suitable for dedicated Plutonium production, but it does mean that you don't lose much by using it. Its high neutron output might be appealing.
Needs: Plutonium DustAsks for:HE Mox Fuel Rod
- Nuke
You're playing with Nuclear Reactors, so the most obvious next step would be to make a Nuke. Only for testing purposes, of course... (: These don't actually explode when placed so don't go getting any ideas.
Needs: Plutonium DustAsks for:Nuke
- Uranium 235 Dust
Uranium 235 is a rare isotope of Uranium, as opposed to Uranium 238, its more common sibling. When processing Uranium Fuel Rods that used 235 in their recipe, you will get back 2/3 of the 235 used to create it, meaning that you will need to constantly be centrifuging Uranium to get more 235. These produce more energy than regular Uranium Fuel Rods, but less than Plutonium-based ones.
Needs: Uranium Fuel RodAsks for:Uranium 235 Dust
- HE Uranium Fuel Rod
By mixing Uranium 235 and 238 together, we can get HE Uranium Dust. These can be processed into HE Uranium Fuel Rod for more efficiency!
Needs: Uranium 235 DustAsks for:HE Uranium Fuel Rod
- Deuterium
Deuterium is a byproduct of Water in a Nuclear Reactor when it is hit with a Fast Neutron. It can be used to make Heavy Water.
Needs: Uranium Fuel RodAsks for:Deuterium Bucket
- Tritium
Tritium is a byproduct of Heavy Water getting hit by a Fast Neutron in a Nuclear Reactor.
Needs: DeuteriumAsks for:Tritium Bucket
- Reactor Mechanics
Here's a simplistic overview of the many reactor mechanics. Neutron Emission: Fuel Rods emit Neutrons, which start reactions. These can be Fast or Thermal, with a percent change of being either. Fuel Rods can emit the maximum number of Neutrons, as seen in JEI, or less depending on the temperature it is at. Fuel Rods will also emit Neutrons when they absorb incoming Neutrons. Neutron Absorption: Fuel Rods and reactor components have a chance to absorb an incoming Fast Neutron. If this occurs, the Fuel Rod will emit more Neutrons, while other components will take a tick of durability. Neutron Scattering: Incoming Neutrons have a chance to be deflected into other spaces. The direction it travels is random. The Neutron type has a chance to become either Fast or Thermal, depending on the chance listed on the component's EMI page. Neutron Travel: If a traveling Neutron is not absorbed and does NOT scatter, it passes through the component, maintaining its direction of travel. If a Neutron travels into an unoccupied space (any non-hatch), it disappears. Temperature: When a Thermal Neutron is absorbed, it raises the temperature of the component in question. Thermal Conductivity: The ability for the component to transmit heat. Sends heat from hot things to less hot things.
