Productive Bees is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.21.1-13.14.0. Get your resource fix from bees (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Productive Bees?

1 part

Productive Bees builds on top of vanilla bees and adds a whole range of new ones, along with the machines to catch, breed and process them. This pack ships version 1.21.1-13.13.5. If you already know how vanilla bees work, you're ready to start.[1][2]

There are a few kinds of bee. Solitary bees spawn from nests in the overworld and don't live in hives. Wild bees live mostly in the nether and the end, and they will happily move into a hive. Hive bees live in advanced hives, which they need in order to produce resource combs. Most hive bees are bred from other bees. Some bees have special jobs instead of producing resources, such as the Farmer Bee, the Lumber Bee and the Quarry Bee.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

The machines are what turn this into a resource engine. The Centrifuge processes resource combs into resources and honey, and the Powered Centrifuge does the same faster using FE. The Breeding Chamber breeds bees for you, and the Catcher catches bees that fly over it. If you want to go deeper into genetics, the Gene Indexer combines genes automatically when it gets a redstone signal.[10][11][12][13]

Where it fits in the pack

Productive Bees is part of the pack's resource generation quest chapter. The early quests walk you through the basic setup in this order:[14]

The quest chapter also has you collect nests, such as the Oak Nest, Stone Nest and End Stone Nest, plus several quests that ask for a Honeycomb.[14]

Tip: Use JEI to look up breeding recipes and flower requirements. Some bees only exist in other dimensions or through breeding, so check which parents you need before you go hunting.[2][3]

How do you get started with Productive Bees?

5 parts

Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so it helps to know the basics of how vanilla bees work. Your first job is to find a vanilla bee nest and take some honey bottles and honeycombs from it. The honey bottles are needed for bee cages, and the honeycombs for your first advanced beehive.[2]

Make a Bee Cage

The honey bottles go into Bee Cage. Cages make it much easier to carry bees back home. Right click a bee to catch it, then right click the filled cage on the ground to let it out again. It's easy to get early on, so keep a few on you whenever you travel.[2][15]

Releasing a bee on a valid flower block sets its flower position to that block. Sneak and release it on a valid hive or nest to set its home instead.[15]

Build an advanced beehive and an expansion box

Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box. The hive has a GUI where you can see which bees are inside and take out what they've produced. Unlike a vanilla hive, it doesn't need a campfire nearby, and you can break it and move it with the bees still inside, no silk touch needed. An expansion box raises the bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades.[2][16][17]

Unverified The recipes for the advanced beehive and the expansion box aren't in the material available for this section. Look them up in JEI to see the in-pack versions. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Grab some nests and honey treats

Solitary bees spawn from nests out in the overworld. Breaking a nest picks it up with the bee still inside, again with no silk touch. You can also craft nests, like the Oak Nest. Crafting a nest with itself clears out its bee and any eggs.[4][18][19]

Honey Treat is worth making early. Feed it to baby bees to speed up their growth, or to angry bees to calm them down. You can also right click an empty nest with one to start the cooldown that attracts a new bee.[18][20]

Some bees can only be found in other dimensions or obtained through breeding. Use JEI to look up the breeding recipes so you know which bees to track down.[2]

Process combs with a Centrifuge

Bees in advanced hives produce resource combs. The Centrifuge turns those combs into resources and honey. The Bottler bottles honey and other fluids, and it can sit next to a centrifuge and fill automatically.[13][21][22]

Following the quests

The pack's resource_generation quest chapter covers these items too. "Beehives to Beehomes" quest asks for the Feeding Slab, which holds 3 item blocks and gives your bees a central flowering spot. After that, "Honey Treats" quest asks for a honey treat and a bee cage, and "Useful Machines" quest asks for a bottler and a centrifuge. The BaBee Incubator quest ("BaBee Incubator" quest) and the Catcher quest ("Auto-Catching Bees" quest) come after the bottler and centrifuge quest.[14][23]

How does Productive Bees work?

7 parts

Productive Bees is mostly about live bees working inside hives and machines that process what they make. Below is how the pieces fit together, from the hive to the centrifuge and the genetics setup. The sources don't give exact power numbers, so I only cover what they actually explain.[2][22]

Advanced hives and expansion boxes

Hive bees only make resource combs inside an advanced hive. Unlike the vanilla hive, it needs no campfire to harvest, and you can break it and carry it away with the bees still inside, no Silk Touch needed. Its GUI shows which bees are inside and lets you take out what they produced.[3][16]

An expansion box raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and is what lets you install upgrades. You can place it on top of or next to the hive, and each hive takes only one.[16][17]

The pack changes the wooden expansion box recipes, such as this Acacia one, so check the recipe below instead of relying on the mod defaults. The Canvas versions are crafted from the matching wooden box.[19]

Changed by the pack

Tip: If you're tired of waiting for a bee to leave the hive, whack the hive or nest with a stick. This forces the bee out, but you lose all production progress, and it only works if it's safe for the bees to exit.[16]

Hive upgrades

Upgrades go into hives and some machines, and the same upgrade can do different things depending on where it sits. Everything starts from the upgrade base, which is the base of all the other upgrades.[24]

  • Productivity: in a hive it increases the combs a bee makes per trip, and you can stack several. In a centrifuge it raises the stack processing rate (by 4 for the first tier and by 8 for the second). In a Honey Generator it lowers honey consumption.[24][25]
  • Speed: in a hive it shortens the time a bee spends inside. In a centrifuge or incubator it raises operation speed.[24]
  • Filter: right click a bee to add it to the filter, and put the filter in a crafting grid to clear it. In a hive only the listed bees can enter. In a catcher only they are picked up. In a centrifuge it only allows combs made by the filtered bees.[24][25]
  • Range: in a hive it adds 1 per upgrade to the working range of Farmer and Collector/Hoarder bees, from a default of 4. In a catcher it widens the area by 1 block in all directions.[7][24]
  • BaBee: in a hive it gives a small chance for the bees inside to breed on their own, but bees that can't breed normally don't work with it. In a catcher it makes the catcher take only baby bees.[24][25]
  • Block upgrade: bees in the hive produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs.[24]
  • Anti-teleport: bees that can teleport no longer do so while living in that hive.[24]
  • Gene sampler: each visit can extract a small sample of genes from pollinating bees. You can install several in one hive for a better rate.[24][25]

Simulated hives and performance

The simulator upgrade keeps the bees inside the hive and simulates their flower trips instead. That helps server performance because the bees never become entities in the world. The flower block, or a feeding slab holding flower blocks, has to sit at the foot of the hive: right below the front, without blocking it.[24][26]

A feeding slab holds 3 item blocks. A simulated hive only has 1 flower position, so a feeding slab lets you run up to 3 different bees in it. Lumber and Quarry bees feeding from it produce from a random item in the slab. You can also honeylog the slab, which gives the bees regeneration.[23]

If you don't simulate, make sure every bee has a home and its flower block, and keep them in an enclosure that isn't too big or they wander off. If you run lots of centrifuges, you can also turn off comb rendering in the productivebees-client config file.[26]

Centrifuge and Bottler

The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid that you can pump out, and it automatically outputs fluid into any fluid storage block next to it. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE for faster processing. The pack also has an alternative recipe for the basic centrifuge that uses a cauldron.[13][19]

Catching and breeding

The Catcher needs to be loaded with Bee Cage items and grabs any bee flying over it. Put a flower or feeding slab on top to attract bees. It accepts the BaBee, Filter and Range upgrades, and you can install multiple Range upgrades.[12][19]

The Incubator speeds up baby bees. Put the BaBee in a cage and insert it with honey treats. It can also turn an egg into a spawn egg of a specific bee type, using the bee type gene from the genetics setup. Only the type gene counts there, and any extra genes on the treat are lost.[27]

Genetics

To collect genes, put empty bottles in a bottler and set it up with a piston. Place a bee in the middle and pull the lever to bottle it. Then throw the bottled bee into a centrifuge, which separates the useful genes from the junk.[13][21][28]

To pass a gene on, combine it with a honey treat and feed the treat to the bee. It has a chance, based on the gene's purity, to gain the attribute. You raise purity by combining two of the same gene or by putting more of the same gene on one treat. The Gene Indexer is a big container that combines genes for you automatically, and it needs a redstone signal.[10][29]

Attributes you can change this way include productivity, weather tolerance, working hours (diurnal, nocturnal or metaturnal), endurance and temper.[30]

Power and other helpers

The Honey Generator burns honey to produce power. You can pipe honey in, or add honey bottles, blocks and buckets in its GUI. It accepts a Productivity upgrade, which lowers honey consumption, and a Speed upgrade.[31]

The Bee Jar is a display block. You fill it by putting a bee cage with a bee inside using a hopper or a pipe.[32]

Unverified The sources don't give FE production or consumption numbers for the Honey Generator, Powered Centrifuge or Breeding Chamber. They also don't give percentage values for the hive productivity upgrades, and there are no config files for this mod in the pack to check them against. Check the in-game tooltips for exact figures.

How do you progress through Productive Bees?

5 parts

Productive Bees progression in this pack follows the resource_generation quest chapter. The quests are untitled, so I'll point you to each one by its link and tell you what it asks for. Quests unlock one after another, so you can see the order right away.[14]

Step 1: The Feeding Slab

Everything branches from "Beehives to Beehomes" quest. It asks for three items, and one of them is the Feeding Slab. The slab is a collection point for feeding bees and holds 3 item blocks. Lumber and Quarry bees produce from a random item in it. You can also honeylog it, which gives bees regeneration.[14][23]

Step 2: Core tools

Two quests unlock once the slab quest is done. "Honey Treats" quest wants a Honey Treat plus either a Bee Cage or a Sturdy Bee Cage. "Useful Machines" quest wants a Bottler plus either a Centrifuge or a Powered Centrifuge.[14]

The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey, and the Bottler fills bottles with honey and other fluids. Place the Bottler next to a Centrifuge and it fills automatically. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE at a higher processing speed.[13][21]

The Bottler quest opens two more. "BaBee Incubator" quest asks for the BaBee Incubator, which speeds up BaBee growth when you give it honey treats. "Auto-Catching Bees" quest asks for the Catcher. Load it with cages and it catches any bee flying over it, and a flower or feeding slab on top attracts bees.[12][14][27]

Step 3: Nests

A separate group of quests, all following the same parent quest, asks you to get nests. You can finish them in any order. Solitary nests spawn bees in the overworld, while wild bees live mostly in the nether and the end.[4][5][14]

The nether nests also matter for finding bees. Crystalline Bees live in quartz nests, Ghostly Bees in soul sand nests, and Magmatic Bees in nether brick nests inside nether fortresses.[35][36][37]

The pack changed the Nether Gold Nest recipe, so check this one before you craft it.[19]

Step 4: Advanced hives and comb quests

Bees need an advanced hive to produce resource combs. Expansion boxes raise a hive's capacity from 3 to 5 bees and let you install upgrades. The pack changed the Acacia Expansion Box recipe, and the other plain wood expansion boxes (bamboo, birch, cherry, crimson, dark oak and jungle) are marked as changed too.[3][16][19]

Finishing the nether nest quest opens three quests that each ask for a Honeycomb: "Redstone Bees" quest, "Gold Bees" quest and "Iron Bees" quest. A chain follows from the first of them. "Lapis Bees" quest unlocks "Diamond Bees" quest, which in turn unlocks both "Ancient Bees" quest and "Emerald Bees" quest. "Keeping The Lights Out" quest lists the configurable honeycomb as a task twice.[14]

Unverified The quest data only lists the generic configurable honeycomb item, so I can't confirm which specific comb each of these quests expects. Check the quest descriptions in-game.

Step 5: Breeding, genetics and the Heated Centrifuge

"Easy Breeding!" quest asks for the Breeding Chamber. You supply the parent bees, their breeding items, power and empty cages, and speed upgrades make it faster.[11][14]

Hive bees are mostly bred from solitary bees and other hive bees. Here is a sample chain from the in-game guide:[3]

  • Diamond Bee: bred from an Ender Bee and a Lapis Bee.[38]
  • Lapis Bee: bred from a Redstone Bee and a Blue Banded Bee.[39]
  • Emerald Bee: bred from a Slimy Bee and a Diamond Bee.[40]
  • Ancient Bee: converted from a Diamond Bee by feeding it a block of netherite.[41]

The pack changed the produce recipes for the Amethyst Bee and the Rose Quartz Bee. I can't confirm the new outputs from the sources I have, so check JEI for both.[19]

For genetics, "Bee Genes" quest asks for the Gene Indexer plus a gene sampler upgrade. The Indexer combines gene samples for you and needs a redstone signal. The last machine quest is "Heated Centrifuge" quest, the Heated Centrifuge.[10][14]

How does Productive Bees work with other mods?

4 parts

Productive Bees plugs into a lot of the pack. Most of it happens in three places: the Centrifuge returns items from other mods, a bee can be converted by feeding it a modded item, and a few crafting-style recipes (AE2 transforms, Ars Nouveau's enchanting apparatus) turn a plain configurable bee into something special. Most of these recipes are changed by the pack, so don't assume they match the mod's defaults.[19]

Centrifuge outputs from other mods

The Centrifuge processes resource combs into resources and honey, and the Powered Centrifuge does the same faster using FE. In this pack, the combs from a long list of other mods have centrifuge recipes that give you that mod's material plus Wax.[13][19]

A few centrifuge recipes run the other way and take an input from another mod, returning wax. Examples come from Industrial Foregoing, Oritech, Modern Industrialization, Create and Just Dire Things. The Integrated Dynamics recipes also give back items, including a Ender Pearl from the Liquid Chorus one.[19]

    Converting bees with modded items

The pack uses Productive Bees' bee conversion recipes to turn bees into modded variants. These cover Industrial Foregoing (Ether Gas and Pink Slimy), Just Dire Things (Blazegold, Celestigem, Eclipse Alloy and Ferricore), Mekanism (Lithium), Mystical Agriculture (Prosperity and Soulium), Oritech (Sheol Fire, Strange Matter, Sulfuric Acid and Uranite Crystal), RFTools Base (Dimensional Shard), Actually Additions (Black Quartz) and AE2 (Fluix). Each recipe has its own required item, so check them in JEI.[19]

    Transforming configurable bees

Applied Energistics 2 and Ars Nouveau can both produce special bees from a configurable bee. The AE2 recipes are transform recipes done in-world in water or lava, and they cover the Entro, Redstone Crystal, Sky Bronze and Sky Osmium bees. Ars Nouveau uses the enchanting apparatus for the Arcane and Air Essence bees. All of these are changed by the pack, and each gives back the bee along with a configurable bee spawn egg.[19]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Productive Bees?

    4 parts

Everything Productive Bees related in this pack lives in a single quest chapter, "resource_generation". The quests in it have no titles, so I refer to them by quest ID. The chapter is a tech-tree: you start with the basic bee gear, branch into nests, then move on to honeycomb and the more advanced machines.[14]

Getting started: feeding, cages and processing

    1. "Beehives to Beehomes" quest is the entry point for this mod. It has three item tasks, and one of them is the Feeding Slab. The other two tasks don't show an item id in the data I have, so I can't say what they are.[14]
    2. "Honey Treats" quest comes next and asks for a Honey Treat plus a Bee Cage or a Sturdy Bee Cage. Either cage works.[14]
    3. "Useful Machines" quest also unlocks after the first quest. It asks for a Bottler plus a Centrifuge or a Powered Centrifuge.[14]
    4. After the Bottler and Centrifuge quest, two more open up. "BaBee Incubator" quest wants a BaBee Incubator, and "Auto-Catching Bees" quest wants a Catcher.[14]

    Nest quests

The nest quests all unlock from the same earlier quest in the chapter, so you can do them in any order. Where a quest lists several nests joined by "or", you only need one of them.[14]

    Honeycomb quests

Finishing the Nether nest quest "Nether Nests" quest opens three separate honeycomb quests: "Redstone Bees" quest, "Gold Bees" quest and "Iron Bees" quest. Each one asks for a Honeycomb.[14]

The first of those, "Redstone Bees" quest, starts a chain. "Lapis Bees" quest follows it and "Diamond Bees" quest follows that. The chain ends in two quests that unlock together after it, "Ancient Bees" quest and "Emerald Bees" quest. All of them ask for a Honeycomb.[14]

"Keeping The Lights Out" quest sits on a separate branch. It has two Honeycomb tasks and unlocks after a quest outside the ones listed here.[14]

Unverified The honeycomb quests all ask for the same item, but the data I have doesn't say which bee type or honeycomb variant each one needs. Check the in-game quest book for the exact variant.
