Applied Energistics 2
56 quests, with the items each asks for and where they come from in FTB Skies 2.
- Getting Started With Applied Energistics!
Applied Energistics (AE2) is a highly customizable digital storage mod that completely changes the way you experience modded MC. Gone are the days of chest walls! To get started with AE2, you'll want to first construct a Charger. This machine accepts power to charge items, which you'll need for the progression of the mod. Yes, the reward is for decoration. This is not a bug.
Asks for:Charger
- A Certain Quartz
Obtaining Certus Quartz, the key ingredient for this digital storage system, can be done one of two ways: Purifying Budding Black Quartz using some Advanced DireGoo. Trading for some with a villager who has a charger job site known as a Fluix Researcher. Information on presses on the next page -> The presses for making digital circuits can either be made through Essence Crafting, or by further trading with the Fluix Researcher. Multiple Researchers may be required, however, if you're patient, the wandering traders that sometimes appear might sell a Mysterious Cube that drops one of each press when broken. If you're really pressed for presses you can always Summon the Trader from the Shop.

- But where's the Sky Stone?
Sky Stone can be obtained from the Fluix Researcher villager through trading, from a friendly Wandering Trader, or by smelting some sky stone dust. Many floating structures also contain an abundance of sky stone that you can mine while exploring. This dust is mined by placing an Annihilation Plane facing up at the build limit and linking it to storage.
Asks for:Sky Stone Dust,
Sky Stone
- The AE2 Guide
AE2 comes with a built-in guide that you can access at any time within JEI. When hovering an item from the mod, you'll be prompted to hold the keybind to open up the guide. This guide is incredibly detailed and can be super helpful if you need help along the way!
Needs: Getting Started With Applied Energistics! - Certus Quartz Budding
Budding Certus Quartz works similarly to amethyst and will bud crystals over time. Each time a crystal is formed, or if the block is broken, the budding block has a chance to decay to a lower tier version and must be repaired by throwing it in water with Charged Certus Quartz Crystals. Flawless Budding Certus Quartz do not suffer this drawback and can be grown indefinitely! These will decay into Flawed Budding Certus Quartz if mined, but can be moved safely using things like a Cardboard Box. Harvesting the Certus Crystals before they are fully grown will only give dust, while fully grown crystals will give full Certus Quartz crystals. It is worth it to fully automate harvesting crystals as soon as possible, but that requires some Certus to get started with. That's why you can twerk to grow the crystals in the early game! To do this, hold a hoe in your hand and start crouching.
Needs: A Certain QuartzAsks for:Certus Quartz Crystal,
Certus Quartz Dust
- Inscribing Processors
The Inscriber is one of the most important machines in AE2. These machines create processors for all of your network parts and technology. These do require power but can accept regular FE power from other modded sources. You'll want one for each of Inscriber Press you have, and should look to automate this as soon as possible. Each Inscriber can take up to 4 Acceleration Cards to greatly increase their working speed.
Needs: Certus Quartz BuddingAsks for:Inscriber,
Printed Calculation Circuit,
Printed Engineering Circuit,
Printed Logic Circuit
- Silicon
Silicon is needed for crafting most of the electronic parts in AE2, including creating completed Processors. You'll want to have a dedicated Inscriber that is automated and pumps out Printed Silicon as soon as possible!
Needs: Inscribing ProcessorsAsks for:Printed Silicon,
Silicon
- Completing Processors
In another Inscriber, you can combine a Printed Circuit with Printed Silicon and a piece of Redstone to craft a complete Processor. These Processors are the main crafting components needed for most of the electronics you'll use, like Terminals, Disk Drives, and lots more. It's worth automating the production of these as soon as possible! As a tip for automation, you can use a 5th Inscriber to complete Processors in the chain. You can set filters to pipe Redstone into the back, Printed Silicon into the top, and any Printed Processor into the bottom. The finished Processors can then be piped out of the front. A simple way to achieve this is using locked Functional Drawers.
Needs: SiliconAsks for:Calculation Processor,
Engineering Processor,
Logic Processor
- ME Interface
Interfaces have many uses, mainly that they are a fluid/item storage block that can have 9 individually configured slots to fill and/or empty itself from a network storage. They're essentially just chests/multi-fluid tanks with built-in Import Busses, Export Busses, and Level Emitters. Interfaces come in 2 different variants (normal and flat/subpart) which changes where their inventories can be accessed from and what they can provide a network connection to. Interfaces also have a few special functionalities with other AE2 devices: Connecting a Storage Bus to an Interface will allow the Storage Bus' entire storage network to connect to the Interface as if it were placed on one big chest. If a Pattern Provider is connected to an unconfigured interface on subnets, it will skip the interface entirely and push directly to that subnet's storage, not filling it with recipe batches, and more importantly, not inserting the next batch until there's space in storage.
Needs: Completing Processors - I/O Bus
Import and Export Buses will allow you to pipe items into and out of your system and any other connected inventories. This, along with interfaces and pattern providers, will allow you to fully automate your entire base! These devices can be upgraded with Cards to be redstone sensitive, accept NBT specific items or not (Fuzzy), or to increase speed and capacity with Acceleration and Capacity Cards.
Needs: Completing ProcessorsAsks for:ME Export Bus,
ME Import Bus
- Cables and Channels (Understanding AE Channels)
Before you start building out your AE Network, it's time to talk about Channels. Don't worry, the pack's default is set to 4x by default with the intention of having an easier time for players who might be new to AE2. Channels are essentially the limit of the total number of devices that your Network can interact with at one time. This can be increased with some clever mechanics and the use of multiblock Controllers, which will be discussed in a different quest. With the increased settings, you have 32 Channels per network before needing to add more channels. To connect different parts of your networks, you can do this by using 3 different types of ME Cables: Glass Cables, Dense Cables, and Smart Cables. Each of these cables carry a different amount of Channels. This means you might run into issues if you run Glass Cables to every single part of your network when you get towards the end game. Glass Cables transfer power, but can also transfer up to 32 Channels with the pack's settings. Smart Cables don't add more channels, but give you a visual of how many channels are being used with lines on the cable itself. Dense Cables can transfer up to 128 Channels, but does not support connecting to Buses or Panels. You can also make Dense Smart Cables!
Needs: Completing ProcessorsAsks for:Fluix ME Covered Cable,
Fluix ME Glass Cable,
Fluix ME Smart Cable
- Adding More Channels
Controllers are used to increase the amount of channels a network has. These aren't necessary to use in the early game, especially since you have 32 channels to work with by default. Networks without a Controller are considered Ad-Hocs. The Controller is considered the routing hub of your ME network. You cannot have 2 separate ME Controllers in the same network, but you can build a massive multiblock setup if you need the extra channels. A single Controller will provide 128 Channels per face with the pack's settings. This makes it where if you add a controller, you will most likely never have to worry about channels. You can find more info and rules for building multiblock controllers in the AE2 Guide.
Needs: Cables and ChannelsAsks for:ME Controller
- ME Crafting Terminal
The Crafting Grid allows you to access all connected inventories and craft with them at one central location. Just like other Panels, these cannot connect to Dense Cables. Glass, Covered, or Smart Cables will work! The Storage Bus allows you to connect your existing storages to your network.
Needs: Cables and ChannelsAsks for:ME Crafting Terminal
- Wireless Access
The Wireless Access Point will allow you to access your AE system remotely by using a Wireless Grid. Using Wireless Boosters will extend the range but cost more energy to operate. You can also have multiple wireless access points around your base instead of trying to extend the signal from a central location.
Needs: ME Crafting TerminalAsks for:ME Wireless Access Point
- Storage Bus
Storage Buses allow your network to see and interact with items inside an external storage block/network, such as a chest, or Storage Controller (from Functional Storage mod). Storage Buses come in different types, and can also be filtered to only allow certain items to be stored and interacted with. It is possible to create an essentially infinite storage network that only takes up one channel.
Needs: ME InterfaceAsks for:ME Storage Bus,
ME Mod Storage Bus,
ME Precise Storage Bus,
ME Tag Storage Bus
- AE2-Replication Bridge
The AE2-Replication Bridge connects your ME Network with a Replication Matter Network, seamlessly integrating the two systems. To link both systems, the AE2-Rep Bridge must be connected via cables to both systems. This will allow you to: - View matter quantities using AE2 terminals. - Request replications using AE2 autocrafting. - Configure crafting priorities. You can check GuideME documentation for further setup information.
Needs: Storage BusAsks for:AE2-Replication Bridge
- Wireless Crafting
To make use of your Wireless Access Points, you'll need to craft the Wireless Crafting Terminal. This device will allow you to link to a wireless access point in your network by placing it in the slot in its interface. Once linked, you can access all of your items and even craft on the go anywhere you have signal!
Needs: Wireless AccessAsks for:Wireless Crafting Terminal
- The Universal Wireless Terminal
The Wireless Universal Terminal allows you to make use of the several different types of Wireless Terminals. This can be crafted by combining your Wireless Crafting Grid with another Wireless Terminal, like the Wireless Pattern Access Terminal.
Needs: Wireless CraftingAsks for:Wireless Pattern Access Terminal,
Wireless Universal Terminal
- Quantum Network Bridges (Extending Your Network)
Say you want to build or connect a part of your network in another location that cables can't reach, like another dimension. To do this, you'll need to create a Quantum Network Bridge. To make this, you'll need to build 2 identical multiblock structures: one connected to your main network, and one connected to the new place you want to build in. Each multiblock will consist of 8 Quantum Rings with an ME Quantum Link Chamber in the center. To connect the two, you'll need to craft and use a Quantum Entangled Singularity on each of the Link Chambers to connect them. The Quantum Ring only allows 128 channels total from it, no matter which face you connect to. You can also only connect to the 4 Quantum Rings that are adjacent to the Link Chamber, as the corners do not connect. Note: Both sides will need to be chunk loaded to work.
Needs: The Universal Wireless TerminalAsks for:Quantum Entangled Singularity,
ME Quantum Link Chamber,
ME Quantum Ring
- Infinite Wireless Access
After you have formed the Quantum Bridge multiblock for your base, you can craft and link the Quantum Bridge Card to install in your Wireless Terminal! This card allows you to access your network from any dimension wirelessly. To link the two, you'll need to create a pair of Quantum Entangled Singularities, and place one into a Quantum Network Bridge and the other into your Wireless Terminal, along with the card itself.
Needs: Quantum Network BridgesAsks for:Quantum Bridge Card
- ME Stock Export Bus
The Stock Export bus will allow you to keep a certain amount of items to be always exported to the target inventory.
Needs: I/O BusAsks for:ME Stock Export Bus
- Soulplied Energistics (Networked Souls)
Soulplied Energistics is an addon mod for IF Souls that allows the transferring of souls using AE2. Attaching a Storage Bus to the Soul Laser Base will allow your network to access the Warden Souls inside it. Then, Right-click any IF Souls item on an Interface Filter to request Souls stored in your system. Finally, attach a Soul Pipe to the Interface and it will use its Warden Souls to power Soul Surges.
Needs: Storage Bus, Transporting Souls (in Industrial Foregoing) - The Start of Digital Storage!
If you're looking to store your items Digitally, you'll want to make the ME Drive and some Storage Cells. The ME Drive can house up to 10 AE Disks. When connected to your network, items can automatically be stored as digital media and accessed via interfaces, I/O Buses and Terminals. Each regular Item Storage Cell can store up to 63 different item types. The size of the Storage Cell will determine how many of each item type it can store, which is measured in Bytes. There are, however, addons in this pack that change what gets stored and how it gets stored. For example: A 1k Item Storage Cell can hold up to 8,128 items of a single type. If you were using all 63 types on that disk, you could hold a maximum of 4160 items. This may seem confusing at first, but it becomes fairly easy to understand when you start using them. If you really want to avoid typed drives however, AE2Things allows you to make typeless drives for a slightly higher cost. This quest rewards you with a choice of the storage type of your choosing.
Needs: Cables and ChannelsAsks for:1k ME Storage Component,
ME Drive
- Cell Workbench
The Cell Workbench allows you to configure what types of items you want to allow onto an AE Storage Cell. The Cells can also be upgraded with Equal Distribution, which will ensure that all of the configured slots are allocated the same amount of space and a single item type won't overtake all available bytes of storage. The Overflow Destruction upgrade will also void any additional items of a specific item type that is stored on the system. By using this upgrade, you can create a drive that is configured to act like an entire wall of storage drawers with void upgrades. Very handy!
Needs: The Start of Digital Storage!Asks for:Cell Workbench
- MEGA Storage
Sometimes, you gotta go big. The MEGA mod gives you that option. To create the storage components for the mod, you'll need to make some Sky Steel. You'll also need a new type of Inscription Press, which can be crafted using a Singularity.
Needs: The Start of Digital Storage!Asks for:Inscriber Accumulation Press,
1M MEGA Storage Component,
Sky Steel Ingot
- Fluix Crystals
Fluix is at the heart of all of technology in Applied Energistics. To make the Fluix Crystal, you'll first need to charge Certus Quartz Crystal in the charger. Next, toss the crystal with a piece of redstone and nether quartz in a pool of water out in the world. The components will react and form a Fluix Crystal that is ready for refinement! You can do many of these at once to speed up the process, as well as eventually making machines that can automate the creation process for you.
Needs: Certus Quartz BuddingAsks for:Fluix Crystal
- Powering Your Network
AE2 has its own power unit called AE. By default, it does not accept power directly from other sources. However, you can use an Energy Acceptor to convert FE power into AE power for your network, which can be distributed out using Glass Cables. If you start running out of power as you add more machines to your network, it might help to create an energy buffer using Energy Cells, which store power for future use. You can also generate free power using the Crystal Resonance Generator. This generator extracts free energy from the vibrations of the crystals within it to generate around 20 AE/t. These vibrations limit your system to only have one of these per AE network.
Needs: Fluix CrystalsAsks for:Crystal Resonance Generator,
Energy Acceptor,
Fluix ME Glass Cable
- The Matter Condenser
The Matter Condenser will destroy any item inserted into it like a trashcan. If you provide it a Cell to act as a buffer, it can instead convert the items into Matter Balls(1-16k) or Singularities (64k+). These Singularities are critical for creating massive storages and inter-dimensional links.
Needs: Fluix CrystalsAsks for:Matter Condenser,
Singularity
- The Reaction Chamber
The Reaction Chamber is a very fast machine that can produce many of the common AE2 materials at the cost of large amounts of power. It's important to make sure you have adequate power buffers as the crafts will not start without enough available power. You can export water or lava into these to process the recipes that require them. This machine is also required for crafting some of the more advanced materials such as Sky Steel and Sky Bronze.
Needs: The Matter CondenserAsks for:Reaction Chamber
- Applied Flux
Applied Flux is an addon that allows your AE Network to store and automatically transfer power (FE) to connected machines. The Flux Accessor serves as your input/output block for managing FE within your system, which is stored within the relevant storage cells. Machines connected to a Pattern Provider can also be powered by inserting an Induction Card into said Pattern Providers, automatically powering those machines using FE within your system.
Needs: The Reaction ChamberAsks for:16k ME FE Storage Cell,
16M ME FE Storage Cell,
1k ME FE Storage Cell,
1M ME FE Storage Cell,
256k ME FE Storage Cell,

- Automating Crystals
Budding Crystals can take some time to grow and when you're trying to get your system up and running, no one wants to do a bunch of waiting around. Growth Accelerators can be crafted and placed under the budding block to speed up the rate they grow substantially. These do require power to work.
Needs: Powering Your NetworkAsks for:Growth Accelerator
- Growing Entro Crystals
Entro Crystals are harvested from budding blocks, just like harvesting Certus! To create the budding block that grows Entro Crystals, you'll need to make an Entro Seed first and then right-click them on a Fluix Block in the world to convert it over. It's a good idea to get these crystals growing early, especially if you plan on getting into Extended AE!
Needs: Fluix CrystalsAsks for:Entro Crystal,

- Autocrafting
One of the main uses of digital storage is the ability to Autocraft Items. In AE2, this is done by creating custom multiblocks that make use of Crafting CPUs, Co-Processors, and more. To get started, you'll need to make the main crafting component: the Crafting Unit.
Needs: The Start of Digital Storage!Asks for:Crafting Unit
- Quantum Autocrafting
Using the power of Entro Crystals, you can create the fastest autocrafting setups using Quantum Autocrafting. The base crafting block is the Quantum Crafting Unit, which is needed for both the Quantum Crafter and the Quantum Computer Multiblock.
Needs: Autocrafting, Inscriber Concurrent PressAsks for:Quantum Crafting Unit
- The Quantum Computer Core
The Quantum Computer will be your ultimate autocrafting multiblock, capable of crafting an unlimited amount of crafting tasks at the same time, as long as it has the crafting storage for it. The Quantum Computer Core is the core of this multiblock, and acts as 8 Co-Processors and 256M of storage all on its own. It can be used for autocrafting by itself, but using it within the Quantum Computer multiblock will extend its processing power even further.
Needs: Quantum AutocraftingAsks for:Quantum Computer Core
- The Quantum Computer Structure
The structure of the Quantum Computer multiblock can range from a 3x3x3 to a 7x7x7 square. The minimum must contain at least a Quantum Computer Core, and all edges and sides of the cube must be Quantum Structure Blocks. Quantum Crafting Units can be used to fill in empty spaces within the multiblock, but do not serve a purpose otherwise when placed inside.
Needs: The Quantum Computer CoreAsks for:Quantum Computer Structural Glass
- Quantum Data Entangler
The Quantum Entangler will effectively multiply all Quantum Storage by 4. You can only use 1 per multiblock structure.
Needs: The Quantum Computer StructureAsks for:Quantum Data Entangler
- Quantum Acceleration
Quantum Computer Accelerators add 8 Co-Processors each to the multiblock. These are nice to have many of inside of the multiblock structure.
Needs: The Quantum Computer StructureAsks for:Quantum Computer Accelerator
- Quantum Storage
The inside of the Quantum Computer multiblock can be customized using a mix of different blocks, including extra Quantum Storage. Quantum Computer Storage blocks effectively increase the amount of concurrent tasks the multiblock can handle at once.
Needs: The Quantum Computer StructureAsks for:128M Quantum Computer Storage
- The Autocrafting Multiblock
The Crafting CPU Multiblock is the heart of autocrafting within AE2. These multiblocks must be built as rectangular prisms in shape with no empty blocks, and contain at least 1 or more Crafting Storages. While optional, Crafting Co-Processors are recommended to use as well. Crafting Storage blocks are used to store the ingredients of a craft. The storage amount will determine how many items you can request to be autocrafted at once. For example, if you want to craft 1k Crafting Tables, you will need to have enough crafting storage to store the ingredients of all 1k of them. The Crafting Co-Processor is an optional block but is recommended as each additional Co-Processor allows for more sub tasks to be queued at once, and somewhat speeds up complex autocrafting operations. For example, crafting 1k Crafting Tables might require turning logs into planks, then planks into tables. With multiple Co-Processors, your multiblock can craft the logs into planks at the same time as it crafts planks into tables. Otherwise, it would craft all of the logs into planks until finished, then craft the planks into the tables all at once. One important thing to note is that each Crafting CPU Multiblock can only handle one type of task at a time. For example, if you wanted to craft both 1k Crafting Tables and autosmelt 1k Iron Ingots at the same time, you will need 2 separate CPU Multiblocks to achieve this. For more info, you can always refer to the AE2 Guide.
Needs: AutocraftingAsks for:16k Crafting Storage,
1k Crafting Storage,
256k Crafting Storage,
4k Crafting Storage,
64k Crafting Storage,
Crafting Co-Processing Unit
- Quantum Crafter
The Quantum Crafter acts like a Molecular Assembler, Pattern Provider, AND an ME Requester all in one. It also crafts blazingly fast, can be configured to keep stock on multiple items at once, and can even be upgraded with Acceleration Cards. The only limit it has is that it can only store 9 Patterns total.
Needs: Quantum AutocraftingAsks for:Quantum Crafter
- Multi-Threading
The Quantum Multi-Threader will effectively multiply all Co-Processors in the multiblock by 4. You can only use 1 per multiblock structure.
Needs: The Quantum Computer StructureAsks for:Quantum Computer Multi-Threader
- Requesters
The ME Requester allows you to set certain thresholds for items to keep in stock. As an example, if you tell the Requester you want to keep 20 crafting tables in stock at all times in the network, and your inventory drops below 20, it will automatically trigger crafting operations provided you've taught your system the recipe. You can also achieve similar functionality using level emitters and redstone cards on interfaces set to export a set amount of ingredients.
Needs: The Autocrafting MultiblockAsks for:ME Requester,
ME Requester Terminal
- Creating Patterns
To teach your system how to craft items, you'll need to provide it with Crafting Patterns. These are created inside of a Pattern Encoding Terminal. By providing the terminal with Blank Patterns, you can use JEI to search for an item you want to make a pattern for, then clicking the + to add the recipe onto the terminal. Once the pattern is on the table, you can click the button below the Blank Pattern to encode the recipe onto the pattern to be used in autocrafting!
Needs: AutocraftingAsks for:Blank Pattern,
ME Pattern Encoding Terminal
- Storing Patterns (The "What" and "Where" of Autocrafting)
Once you've encoded some patterns using the Pattern Encoding Terminal, you can place them into a Pattern Provider. The Providers will try to complete the craft using whatever block it is attached to. For doing shaped and shapeless craft recipes that don't require machines, you can place the Provider next to a Molecular Assembler, which are just fancy autocrafters! For other autocrafting tasks that require some type of processing, you'd place the Provider facing the machine you want to craft in. For example, you can set up autosmelting for recipes by placing a Furnace in front of the Provider, and then encoding the appropriate smelting recipes onto patterns to be placed into the Providers. For more information about how to make the Pattern Providers and Assemblers work faster, check out the AE2 Guide!
Needs: Creating PatternsAsks for:Molecular Assembler,
