What is Extended AE?

4 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that streamlines storage and crafting workflows. If you already have an ME network and you're tired of slow pattern handling, slow chip making or cramped buses, this is the mod for you.[1]

The pack ships Extended AE 1.21-2.2.35 for NeoForge.[2]

What it adds

  • A 36-slot Pattern Provider and Interface, so you can craft or export huge recipe sets from one block.[1]
  • Tag, Mod and Precise buses: filter by item tag, filter inventories by mod ID, or export exactly per slot.[1]
  • An Extended Molecular Assembler with x8 parallel crafting, plus an Extended Inscriber and Extended Charger for parallel chip making and charging.[1]
  • The Assembler Matrix, a scalable multiblock crafter built for extreme speed.[1]
  • Quality-of-life tools like the Pattern Modifier, the ME Canner and the ME Wireless Connector for a long-range network bridge.[1]

The Entro system

Most of the mod runs on Entro Crystal, the main crafting ingredient for most Extended AE items and machines. You get it by turning a block into Entroized Fluix Budding and harvesting the Entro Cluster it grows.[3]

To start that process, right-click with an Entro Seed to turn a block into Entroized Fluix Budding. Many of the extended devices are too complex for a crafting table, so you'll craft most of them in the Crystal Assembler.[4][5]

Where it fits in the progression

Extended AE lives in the AE2 quest chapter, and the quests give you a clear order to follow:[6]

  1. Start with "Growing Entro Crystals" quest, which asks for an Entro Seed and an Entro Crystal.[6]
  2. Next comes "Crystal Assembler" quest, which asks for the Crystal Assembler.[6]
  3. After that, "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest asks for the Concurrent Processor and its Inscriber Concurrent Press. "Crystal Fixer" quest asks for the Crystal Fixer.[6]
  4. The Assembler Matrix quests unlock after the Concurrent Processor quest, starting with "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest for the Assembler Matrix Wall. The frame, Craft Core, Pattern Core and Speed Core quests follow.[6]
  5. "Storage Bus" quest is a separate storage bus quest. It asks for the AE2 Storage Bus plus the ME Tag Storage Bus, ME Mod Storage Bus and ME Precise Storage Bus.[6]

Why the Assembler Matrix matters

The Assembler Matrix is a rectangular multiblock with edge lengths between 3 and 7. It can run many crafting jobs at once and save channels for you. Each Assembler Matrix Pattern Core provides 36 pattern slots, and each Assembler Matrix Craft Core runs 8 crafting jobs at the same time.[7]

Tip: Five Assembler Matrix Speed Core blocks give the Assembler Matrix full speed. Installing more than 5 gives no extra boost.[7]

How do you get started with Extended AE?

5 parts

The pack's quest line for this mod walks you through a sensible order: grow Entro Crystals, build the Crystal Assembler, make Concurrent Processors, and finish with the Assembler Matrix. Here is that path, step by step.[6]

Step one: get Entro Crystals going

Most Extended AE items and machines are crafted from Entro Crystal, so it comes first. The quest "Growing Entro Crystals" quest asks for both Entro Seed and Entro Crystal.[3][6]

Craft the seed, then right-click a Fluix Block in the world with it. The block becomes Budding Entroized Fluix, which grows Entro Crystals much like Certus Quartz does. Be aware that this budding block degrades unavoidably over time.[4][8][9]

Step two: build the Crystal Assembler

Most Extended AE devices are too complex for a crafting table, so you need the Crystal Assembler to make them. It can also do certain in-world transformation recipes. The quest is "Crystal Assembler" quest. Its recipe uses the Extended Machine Frame, so make that first.[5][6][10]

Step three: make Concurrent Processors

The quest "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest wants the Inscriber Concurrent Press and the Concurrent Processor. These processors are commonly used in multithreaded machines, which handle multiple tasks at once. The recipe for the speed core of the matrix uses one, so you will need them later.[6][10][11]

Work toward the Assembler Matrix

The Assembler Matrix Wall is the next step, with the quest "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest, which follows the Concurrent Processor quest. After the wall come the quests for the frame, the pattern core, the craft core and the speed core, and the final matrix quest is "Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest.[6]

It needs at least one Pattern Core and one Craft Core, and it must be completely filled, not hollow. When it is formed and powered, the lines on the frame turn blue.[7]

  • Each Pattern Core gives the matrix 36 pattern slots.[7]
  • Each Craft Core can run 8 crafting jobs at the same time.[7]
  • 5 Speed Cores give full speed, and more than 5 add no extra boost.[7]
Tip: Right-click a formed, online matrix to open its GUI. There you can add or search for patterns and see how many crafting jobs it is running.[7]

How does Extended AE work?

6 parts

Extended AE is built around a few machines that do the heavy lifting: the Crystal Assembler crafts the mod's gear, the Extended Molecular Assembler and the Assembler Matrix run crafting jobs in parallel, and a family of buses and interfaces move items around your ME network. This section covers how each of them behaves in this pack.[5][7][13][14][15]

Building the machines

Most block-form machines in the mod need an Extended Machine Frame. The devices are too complex for a crafting table, so you craft most of them in the Crystal Assembler. It can also run in-world style transformation recipes such as fluix transformation. The face with the screen cannot connect to the network.[5][16]

In this pack device.enable_crystal_assembler_inscribe_processors is true, so the Crystal Assembler is also allowed to do processor inscriber recipes.[17]

Entro Crystal is the main ingredient for most Extended AE items and machines. Normally you grow it from budding Entroized Fluix, which you create by right-clicking a Fluix Block with an Entro Seed. This pack also adds a shaped recipe that makes 6 of them.[3][4][10]

The Concurrent Processor is used in multithreaded machines so they can handle several tasks at once. The pack changes its Crystal Assembler recipe from the mod's default, so check the recipe below rather than any other guide.[10][11]

Assembler Matrix

The Assembler Matrix is a multiblock that runs many crafting jobs at the same time and saves channels. It is a rectangular prism. The edges are Assembler Matrix Frame blocks, the faces are Wall or Glass, and the interior is Pattern, Craft and Speed Cores. It must be completely filled, not hollow, and it needs at least one Pattern Core and one Craft Core. When it is formed and powered, the lines on the frame turn blue.[7]

The in-game guide says edge lengths run from 3 to 7. The pack's config sets device.assembler_matrix_max_size to 6 (the mod default is also 6, and the allowed range is 3 to 16), so 6 is the limit to plan around in this pack.[7][17]

  • Pattern Core: the matrix only takes patterns from its Pattern Cores, and each one provides 36 pattern slots. Only crafting patterns are accepted.[7][8]
  • Assembler Matrix Craft Core: the matrix hands crafting jobs to its Craft Cores, and each one runs 8 jobs at the same time.[7]
  • Speed Core: 5 speed cores give full speed, and more than 5 add nothing.[7]

Right-click a formed, online matrix to open its screen. There you can add or search for patterns and see how many jobs are running. It also has a button that stops all crafting jobs and returns the ingredients.[7][8]

The pack adds its own Crystal Assembler recipe for the Pattern Core. The Craft Core, Wall and Glass recipes are below.[10][18]

Parallel machines

  • Extended Molecular Assembler: runs eight crafting jobs at once and works twice as fast as the normal one. It only supports jobs sent to it, so you cannot put a pattern in it directly.[13]
  • Extended Inscriber: runs 4 inscribing jobs at the same time. A button changes its maximum stack size (the screen offers stack to 1, 4 or 64).[8][19]
  • Extended Charger: charges 4 items at the same time.[20]
  • Circuit Slicer: slices material blocks straight into processor prints, up to nine times faster than an Inscriber. Glass faces without a port cannot connect to the network.[21]

Moving and filtering items

The extended import and export buses are faster than the normal ones and have more upgrade slots. The speed multiplier comes from device.extended_io_bus_multiplier, which is 8 in this pack (the mod default is also 8). The ME Extended IO Port is eight times faster than the normal IO Port and also has more upgrade slots.[15][17][22]

Interfaces come in a few sizes. The ME Extended Interface has a larger configuration inventory, and the extended pattern provider has a larger pattern inventory. The ME Oversize Interface has the same number of slots as a normal interface but holds 16 times as many items per slot, which is 1024 (64 x 16). That comes from device.oversize_interface_multiplier. The pack also sets device.custom_oversize_interface_multiplier so that mana uses 2 and flux uses 4.[14][17][23][24]

Storage is bigger too. The ME Extended Drive holds 20 storage cells, and the ME Ingredient Buffer holds 36 types of contents, from items to fluids.[25][26]

If you already have normal AE2 devices, you do not need to rebuild them. Sneak and right-click a device with the matching upgrade, such as the Import/Export Bus Upgrade, and it becomes the extended version with all its settings and inventory kept.[27]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: extendedae:ex_bus_upgrade

The specialised buses give you finer control:[28]

  • ME Precise Export Bus: exports exact quantities, and only when the target container can accept the whole output. Set to 3 cobblestone, it stops once the network holds fewer than 3.[28]
  • ME Precise Storage Bus: takes a numerical limit and inserts items only up to that limit.[29]
  • ME Threshold Export Bus: works when the stored amount is above or below a threshold, depending on its mode. With copper set to 128 it exports above 128, or below 128 in BELOW mode.[30]
  • ME Threshold Level Emitter: behaves like a latch with a lower and an upper threshold. With 100 and 150, it turns on once the amount passes 150, stays on while the amount falls, and turns off below 100.[31]
  • Tag buses: the Tag Storage Bus filters by item or fluid tags and supports basic logic, for example the pattern c:ingots/* | c:gems/* accepts all ingots and gems. The Tag Export Bus filters by tags too.[32][33]
  • Mod buses: the Mod Storage Bus and Mod Export Bus filter by mod name or ID, with commas between several IDs.[34][35]

The ME Active Formation Plane places blocks or drops items without needing a subnet. The ME Smart Annihilation Plane is its mirror image, breaking blocks or absorbing items according to its configuration inventory.[36][37]

Crystal Assembler (extendedae)

Recipe id: extendedae:assembler/active_formation_plane

The ME Canner fills containers: the first slot holds the filling material and the second the item to fill. Each operation costs 80 AE. By default it fills only fluids, and addons (Applied Flux, Applied Mekanistics and Applied Botanics Addon) let it handle other materials. Only its top and bottom sides accept energy and connect to the network. In autocrafting, the pattern must contain only the filling material and the container. Swap the inputs and outputs in the pattern, in Empty mode, to drain a container instead.[38]

The ME Wireless Connector links two networks one-to-one. It has limited range and cannot cross dimensions. This pack keeps device.wireless_connector_max_range at 1000. Link the pair with the ME Wireless Setup Kit, and note that connectors only join cables or connectors of the same colour. Power use rises with distance on a curve that is not linear, so very long links get expensive. Each power-saving card reduces the cost by 10%, and the pack leaves device.wireless_connector_power_multiplier at 1.[17][39]

For many-to-many links use the ME Wireless Hub, which has 8 ports and picks a free one automatically when you link it. When all ports are used, you must disconnect one with the X button before adding another.[39][40]

Infinity cells hold 2.1 billion items or fluids, and the pack keeps their idle energy cost at 8 AE/t through item.infinity_cell_energy_cost.[17][41]

Bulk tools

The Config Modifier changes configuration inventories in bulk, such as an Interface's. Its modes are Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Maximize, Minimize, Set and Clear, and most of them use an amount X. Click a device or part in the world to apply it.[42]

Config ModifierMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shaped
any blue dyeBlank Patternany blue dye

Recipe id: extendedae:config_modifier

The Pattern Modifier edits patterns in bulk. Multiply mode scales a processing pattern's inputs and outputs, and the pack's item.pattern_modifier_multipliers is set to 2, 3, 5 and 7. Division only works when the amount divides evenly, and multiplication stops at 999,999 per ingredient. Replace mode swaps one ingredient for another, Property mode edits a crafting pattern's substitution modes, and Clone mode copies a pattern.[17][43]

The ME Packing Tape packs a device into an item with its settings and inventory intact. Sneak and right-click the device to pack it, then right-click with the package to place it again. It only works on the devices on the whitelist, which is set in item.me_packing_tape_whitelist. This pack's list covers the extended and normal interfaces, pattern providers and drives.[17][44]

How do you progress through Extended AE?

4 parts

The pack's quest chapter for this mod gives you a clear ladder to climb: Entro materials first, then the Crystal Assembler, then Concurrent Processors and the Crystal Fixer, and finally the Assembler Matrix. Everything below follows that order, and I'll flag every spot where the pack changed or added a recipe.[6]

Tier 1: Entro Seed and Entro Crystal

Your first stop is quest "Growing Entro Crystals" quest, which asks you to get an Entro Seed and an Entro Crystal. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[6]

Tier 4: Assembler Matrix

The Concurrent Processor quest leads to quest "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest, which asks for the Assembler Matrix Wall. That quest opens five more: the Assembler Matrix Frame ("Assembler Matrix Frame" quest), the Assembler Matrix Craft Core ("Assembler Matrix Craft Core" quest), the Assembler Matrix Pattern Core ("Assembler Matrix Pattern Core" quest), the Assembler Matrix Speed Core ("Assembler Matrix Speed Core" quest), and a final quest, "Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest, that asks for one of each part. How does Extended AE work with other mods?

8 parts

Extended AE is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2, so almost everything it adds plugs straight into your AE2 network. A handful of recipes in the pack also pull in Modern Industrialization, Mystical Agriculture, Productive Bees, Mekanism and Advanced AE. Here is how it all connects.[1][10]

Applied Energistics 2

Most extended devices are too complex for a crafting table, so you need the Crystal Assembler to craft them. Its own recipe is built from AE2 parts and the Extended Machine Frame.[5][10]

Crafting Shaped

Many extended devices are upgrades of an AE2 original: ME Extended Drive, ME Extended IO Port, Extended Inscriber, Extended Charger and Extended Molecular Assembler. Each is crafted in the Crystal Assembler from the matching AE2 machine, and most also need a Concurrent Processor. The same goes for the buses: ME Extended Export Bus, ME Extended Import Bus and the storage-bus variants all build on AE2 buses.[10]

The storage-bus quest "Storage Bus" quest asks for the ME Storage Bus together with the tag, mod and precise storage buses.[6]

Concurrent Processor

The Concurrent Processor is the key part that links Extended AE to AE2's processor line, since it is made from Printed Silicon. You can make it in the AE2 Inscriber or in the Crystal Assembler, and the pack changed the Crystal Assembler recipe. The pack also added a Modern Industrialization Assembler recipe that uses Molten Redstone.[10]

Entro Crystal and Entro Dust

Entro Crystal ties in several mods. Besides the in-world Fluix Crystal transformation, the pack has an Advanced AE reaction recipe (changed by the pack) and a Mystical Agriculture route. The Mystical Agriculture recipes were added by the pack and turn Entro Crystal Essence into either Entro Crystal or Entro Dust.[10]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Extended AE?

3 parts

Everything for this mod sits in a single quest chapter, "ae2". The quests there have no titles, so you'll know them by their IDs and by the items they ask for. Each quest asks you to obtain the listed items, and the order below follows the prerequisite links between quests.[6]

The crystal and processor line

  1. "Growing Entro Crystals" quest is where it starts. It asks for Entro Seed and Entro Crystal, and it unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[6]
  2. "Crystal Assembler" quest asks for the Crystal Assembler. It needs the Entro quest above plus one other earlier quest in the chapter.[6]
  3. "Inscriber Concurrent Press" quest asks for the Inscriber Concurrent Press and the Concurrent Processor. It follows the Crystal Assembler quest.[6]
  4. "Crystal Fixer" quest asks for the Crystal Fixer. It also unlocks right after the Crystal Assembler quest, so you can do it in either order relative to the processor quest.[6]

The Assembler Matrix

The matrix quests open once you finish the Concurrent Processor quest. "The Assembler Matrix Structure" quest comes first and asks for the Assembler Matrix Wall.[6]

After that, four quests unlock in parallel, each asking for one matrix part:[6]

"Max Size Assembler Matrix" quest also unlocks after the wall quest, and it asks for a full set of matrix parts. It accepts either the Assembler Matrix Wall or the Assembler Matrix Glass. It also wants the frame, pattern core, craft core and speed core.[6]

Tip: You don't have to finish the four single-part quests before the full-set quest. They all unlock from the wall quest, so you can gather the parts in whatever order suits you.[6]

Storage buses

"Storage Bus" quest sits on a separate branch. It asks for the standard ME Storage Bus along with three buses from this mod: the ME Tag Storage Bus, the ME Mod Storage Bus and the ME Precise Storage Bus. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter that isn't part of the crystal line.[6]

Which Extended AE config options matter?

4 parts

Everything for Extended AE lives in one file, config/extendedae-common.toml. Every option in it that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack. The values below are what you get here.[17]

Crafting and interface sizes

Wireless connector and Infinity Cells

Pattern Modifier and ME Packing Tape

item.pattern_modifier_multipliers is set to 2, 3, 5 and 7 in this pack.[17]

item.me_packing_tape_whitelist decides which AE devices and parts the ME Packing Tape can pack. In this pack it covers the Extended AE interface, pattern provider and drive, plus their part versions for the interface and pattern provider. It also covers the ae2 interface, pattern provider and drive, and the ae2 cable versions of the interface and pattern provider.[17]

Client and debug options

client.disable_inscriber_item_render is false, so the Extended Inscriber's item render stays on. It only works client side. misc.debug_mode is false, so debug logging is off.[17]

What changed in Extended AE between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Extended AE 1.21-2.2.35-neoforge. The mod was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]

Changes in the 2.2.26 to 2.2.28 releases

These come from the mod's own changelogs for releases that came before the 2.2.35 build your pack uses. Each of them also updated the localization files, which I'll skip from here on.[2][45][46][47]

  • 2.2.26: added the Wireless Connector Upgrade, added shift-click support for the Extended Pattern Access Terminal, and added channel usage to the Wireless Hub GUI tooltip.[47]
  • 2.2.27: added AppliedE support and fixed a crash involving the ME Smart Annihilation Plane.[46]
  • 2.2.28: the ME Precise Output Bus can now be accelerated, the Pattern Modifier can remove the target ingredient from a pattern, and the GUI got a better search match rule.[45]

Unverified The pack changelogs available to this guide have no entries for this mod, so any changes FTB Skies 2 itself made to Extended AE across its releases are not shown in the sources here.
