Occultism is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.224.4. A ritual magic system centered around summonable spirits allows you to automate various tasks, store vast amounts of items, let demons mine in void dimensions, create powerful enchanted tools and jewelry, get support from familiars, and much much more. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Occultism?

2 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, which the mod calls demons, from "The Other Place". It's inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. This pack ships Occultism 1.224.4 for NeoForge 1.21.1.[1][2]

If you like automation, storage and a bit of spooky flavor, this is your mod. The mod's own description lists what the spirits can do for you:[1]

  • Automate various tasks.[1]
  • Store vast amounts of items.[1]
  • Mine in void dimensions.[1]
  • Help you craft powerful enchanted tools and jewelry.[1]
  • Support you with familiars.[1]

Getting started

Per the mod's description, you start by breaking grass until it drops Demon's Dream Seeds, much like vanilla wheat seeds. You craft those seeds with a book to get the Dictionary of Spirits, the mod's in-game guide. From there you work towards the "Third Eye", which reveals the otherworld groves, and then summon your first spirit.[1]

The pack's Occultism quest chapter opens the same way. The first quest, "Welcome to Occultism!" quest, asks for the seeds, and "Demon's Dream Fruit" quest follows with the Demon's Dream fruit.[3]

Where it fits in the quest chapter

After the early steps the chapter branches into the basics of ritual setup. These include Spirit Attuned Gem, the otherworld wood from Unstable Otherworld Sapling, Otherstone, and an empty Book of Binding: Empty. Those lead into chalks in "Basic Chalks" quest, then ritual bowls in "Preparing For A Ritual" quest.[3]

Next comes the bound foliot book in "Your First Ritual" quest. Then "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest (crushed end stone), "Purple Chalk" quest (purple chalk) and "The Quest For More Chalk" quest (research fragment dust) unlock the rest. That includes Otherworld Goggles, the Surprisingly Substantial Satchel, and the storage line starting at "Storage Actuator Base" quest and reaching Dimensional Storage Actuator in "Dimensional Storage" quest.[3]

Later quests cover summoning foliot helpers such as a transporter, a lumberjack and a smelter, as well as familiar rituals and possession rituals.[3]

Unverified I couldn't confirm which other mods or progression stages gate Occultism in this pack, or whether the pack changes any of the mod's default drop rates or recipes. Check the individual recipe pages and quests before relying on default behavior.

How do you get started with Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod, and in this pack the quest chapter gives you a clear order to follow. Here is what to make first, and why.[1][3]

Start with Demon's Dream Seeds

Everything starts with Demon's Dream Seeds. The first quest in the chapter, "Welcome to Occultism!" quest, asks for the seeds, and the next one, "Demon's Dream Fruit" quest, asks for the grown Demon's Dream. The mod's own page says you can get the seeds by breaking grass, much like vanilla wheat seeds. This pack also adds a Market entry for them, and it adds Cloche recipes that turn the seeds into fruit on dirt or on better soils.[1][3][4]

Make the four basics

Four quests share the same parent and all lead into the chalk quest "Basic Chalks" quest. They are "Spirit Attuned Gem" quest (a spirit attuned gem and crystal), "Otherworld Log" quest (an otherworld sapling and log), "Otherstone" quest (otherstone and burnt otherstone) and "Spirits" quest (an empty book of binding).[3]

The gem is made at an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus, then crafted into a crystal.[4]

Chalk and bowls

Once the four basics are done, the chalk quest asks for Impure White Chalk, White Chalk and Yellow Chalk. Impure white chalk is the base for the other impure chalks.[3][4]

Your first bound spirit

The next quest, "Your First Ritual" quest, has an observation task, asks for copper, iron, gold and silver ingots, and wants a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound). A bound foliot book can also be crafted from a foliot Book of Calling.[3][4]

How does Occultism work?

6 parts

Occultism's machines are mostly spirits and rituals instead of power cables and pipes. This section covers what the pack's configs, recipes and mod text confirm: the Dimensional Mineshaft, ritual speed, storage stabilizers, spirit helpers and a few other tuning values.[5][6][7]

Rituals in this pack

The pack speeds rituals up. rituals.ritualDurationMultiplier is set to 0.25 here, where the mod default is 1. Values below 1.0 make rituals faster, so you'll wait far less at the pentacle than on a default install.[7]

The sacrificial bowls and chalices that sit in the middle of a pentacle (the golden, iesnium and dark variants, plus the eldritch and celestial chalices) all say the same thing in their tooltips: use exactly one central bowl per pentacle.[5]

Dimensional Mineshaft

The Dimensional Mineshaft is how you get demons to mine for you. It discards any item it can't store, so empty it regularly. You can do that by hand, with hoppers, or with a transporter spirit.[5]

Item handling depends on which side you use. The top goes to the lamp slot, the bottom goes to the ores slots, and every other side reaches all slots. That matters when you set up hoppers: the bottom is the side to pull ores from.[5]

The pack changed how fast the miner spirits work. The startup config halves the mining time of the Foliot, Djinni, Afrit and Marid miners, and leaves the ancient miner at the mod default. The values below are the amount of time a spirit takes to perform one mining operation.[6]

Durability is the number of mining operations a spirit can perform before it breaks. The pack leaves all of these at the mod defaults.[6]

Enchantments on the miners are allowed in this pack. items.minerEfficiency, items.minerFortune and items.minerSilk are all true, so Efficiency makes miners faster, Fortune can give extra results per operation, and Silk Touch can multiply results.[7]

items.minerOutputBeforeBreak is false, which means miners do not head to the output in the Dimensional Mineshaft before it breaks.[7]

Dimensional Battlefield and Entity Wormhole

The Dimensional Battlefield works out processing time from the target's life, using items.butcherLifeMultiplier, which is 20 here (the mod default). Tougher mobs therefore take longer. Weapons used there can also get damaged as it advances, controlled by items.butcherHurtChance.[7]

The Entity Wormhole has a random teleport feature. It reaches up to 4,096 via items.maxDistanceRTP and makes up to 99 attempts to find a safe spot via items.maxTryRTP. Both are mod defaults.[7]

Storage

Stable wormholes link to a storage actuator, and their tooltip shows the linked position or tells you they aren't linked yet. The stabilized storage actuator uses tier 5 stabilizers, and the pack lowers that count to 7 from the mod default of 8 in storage.stabilizedControllerStabilizers. The config notes that the recipe isn't changed automatically, so check the actuator's recipe in game.[5][7]

Spirit helpers: Books of Calling

Automation spirits come from Books of Calling. Each one is made from a bound Book of Binding plus one extra item, and the recipe blocks below show the exact ingredients. The books available here are Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter, Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack, Book of Calling: Foliot Farmer, Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor and Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator.[4]

Familiar tuning

The blacksmith familiar upgrades other familiars when you right-click it with iron ingots or blocks. An upgrade costs 18 iron with a cooldown of 400, set by familiar.blacksmithFamiliarUpgradeCost and familiar.blacksmithFamiliarUpgradeCooldown. Both are mod defaults.[5][7]

The blacksmith familiar also repairs your gear whenever you pick up stone. familiar.blacksmithFamiliarRepairChance is 0.33, the mod default, and each repair restores 2 durability.[7]

An upgraded greedy familiar searches for blocks within 32 blocks horizontally and 16 vertically, per familiar.greedySearchRange and familiar.greedyVerticalSearchRange. The config warns that large distances can delay finding them.[7]

How do you progress through Occultism?

6 parts

The pack's Occultism quest chapter has untitled quests, so I'll walk you through it by what each quest asks for. The chapter broadly moves through the spirits you work with: Foliot first, then Djinni, Afrit and Marid. Chalk colours and essences act as gates between the steps.[3]

Opening steps: seeds, gems and stone

The chapter opens with Demon's Dream Seeds, followed by growing Demon's Dream ("Welcome to Occultism!" quest and "Demon's Dream Fruit" quest). The pack added its own ways to get it. A Farming for Blockheads market recipe gives the seeds. Immersive Engineering cloche recipes grow the fruit on plain dirt, Rich Soil, Mystical Agriculture farmlands or Just Dire Things soils.[3][4]

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Four more quests open up in parallel. They ask for a Spirit Attuned Gem and Spirit Attuned Crystal, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and Otherworld Log, Otherstone and Burnt Otherstone, and an empty Book of Binding: Empty. Once you have them all, the chalk quest opens ("Basic Chalks" quest), asking for impure white, white and yellow chalk. After that come the bowl quest ("Preparing For A Ritual" quest) and then the bound Foliot book ("Your First Ritual" quest).[3]

Foliot tier

Any Book of Calling for a Foliot can be turned into Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound), so one Foliot book leads to the next. The quest for it also wants copper, iron, gold and silver ingots. Crushed end stone ("More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest) and purple chalk ("Purple Chalk" quest) follow.[3][4]

Research Fragment Dust ("The Quest For More Chalk" quest) is the next big gate. Quests that come after it include the Surprisingly Substantial Satchel, the Otherworld Goggles, green chalk, the lime and light gray chalk quest, the Apprentice Ritual Satchel and the Storage Actuator Base. The Foliot jobs, such as transporter, janitor, smelter, otherstone trader, sapling trader and lumberjack, sit on their own branch of the chapter.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_research_fragment_dust

Djinni tier

Djinni quests cover the Soul Gem and Familiar Ring, the Infused Pickaxe, the Djinni smelter and crusher rituals, and weather and time-of-day summonings. They also include the Dimensional Crystal Matrix with the Dimensional Storage Actuator, and the machine operator book (Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator).[3]

The Iesnium Ingot quest ("Iesnium" quest) comes after the infused pickaxe. The pack added its own recipe that turns a block of silver into an ingot using a Malum void favor. Some ritual recipes, such as the dimensional mineshaft, also take iesnium blocks.[3][4]

Miners

The miner line runs from Miner Foliot to Ore Miner Djinni, then Deep Ore Miner Afrit, then Master Miner Marid, and finally Eldritch Ancient Miner. The Djinni, Afrit and Marid rituals each take the previous miner as an ingredient, and the first one uses a bound Foliot book. The Iesnium Pickaxe quest ("Iesnium Pickaxe" quest) comes first. The Dimensional Mineshaft is also asked for by the pack's resource chapters. The recipe for the final Ancient Eldritch Miner isn't in the sources I have, so I can't walk you through it.[3][4][8][9]

Afrit and Marid tiers

Afrit Essence ("Kandar's Opened Conjure" quest) opens the Afrit stage and leads to red chalk. Afrit essence also goes into the Iesnium Ritual Bowl and the Artisanal Ritual Satchel. Afrit rituals in the chapter include smelting, crushing, rain and thunderstorm.[3][4]

The Marid stage starts with witherite dust, black chalk and a wither skeleton skull ("Black Chalk" quest), which leads to Marid Essence and then blue chalk. Cruelty Essence leads on to brown chalk. The chapter also has Marid crusher and smelter rituals and the Iesnium Anvil. Magenta and cyan chalk sit on a branch next to the anvil.[3]

The endgame quests are rainbow and void chalk, a celestial or eldritch chalice, the Trinity Gem, and the Ancient Miner.[3]

Dimensional storage track

Storage runs alongside the spirits. It starts with the actuator base, then the Stable Wormhole and Storage Accessor. A chain of stabilizers runs from Tier 1 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer up to Tier 4 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer, ending in the Stabilized Dimensional Storage Actuator.[3]

Familiar, possession and wild-ritual quests make up the rest of the chapter.[3]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

4 parts

Occultism connects to a lot of other mods in this pack. The in-pack recipes tie it into Ars Nouveau, Immersive Engineering, Create, Mekanism, Malum, Modern Industrialization, PneumaticCraft and Oritech. Here are the links that show up in the recipes and quests.[4]

Ars Nouveau and silver

The Sacrificial Altar is crafted in the Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus, and the pack changed this recipe. It mixes Ars Nouveau parts, an Occultism Golden Ritual Bowl and any silver ingot.[4]

Sacrificial AltarChanged by the pack

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

The Spirit Attuned Gem can also be made in the Enchanting Apparatus. This one is the mod's own recipe, not a pack change. It needs Ars Nouveau essences, a Source Gem and an Occultism essence. A quest in the Occultism chapter, "Spirit Attuned Gem" quest, asks you to get the gem and the Spirit Attuned Crystal.[3][4]

Farming Demon's Dream

The pack added Immersive Engineering Cloche recipes that grow Demon's Dream Seeds into Demon's Dream. There is a recipe for each of several soils and farmlands from Farmer's Delight, Just Dire Things, Mystical Agriculture and Mystical Agradditions, so you can use whichever you already have.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Occultism?

6 parts

Most of the Occultism questing happens in the pack's occultism chapter. Two other chapters, resource_generation and resources_and_you, each have one quest that touches the mod. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I point to them by ID below. Everything here follows the prerequisite chains between quests, so you can read it top to bottom as a rough route.[3][8][9]

Getting started: seeds, materials and chalk

The chapter opens with a short chain. "Welcome to Occultism!" quest wants Demon's Dream Seeds, and "Demon's Dream Fruit" quest follows it and asks for Demon's Dream.[3]

The main path begins with four parallel quests that all unlock from a quest outside the ones I could see. They ask for the following:[3]

Finishing all four opens "Basic Chalks" quest, which asks for Impure White Chalk, White Chalk and Yellow Chalk. Next is "Preparing For A Ritual" quest, which covers the ritual bowls: a Sacrificial Bowl (or its dark version) and a Golden Ritual Bowl (or its dark version). The source list for that quest is cut off after those two, so I can't confirm any further requirements.[3]

"Your First Ritual" quest has an observation task, asks for copper, iron, gold and silver ingots, and wants a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound). After it come "More About Rituals & Pentacles" quest (Crushed End Stone), "Purple Chalk" quest (Purple Chalk) and then "The Quest For More Chalk" quest, which wants Research Fragment Dust plus its ritual.[3]

The research hub

Once the research fragment dust quest is done, several quests open up from it:[3]

Foliot, djinni, afrit and marid rituals

The Foliot quests mostly pair an advancement with a ritual item. They cover the transporter ("Foliot Transporter" quest), the smelter ("Foliot Smelter" quest), the otherstone trader ("Foliot Otherstone Trader" quest), the janitor ("Foliot Janitor" quest) and the sapling trader ("Foliot Otherworld Sapling Trader" quest). The sapling trader quest leads to "Foliot Lumberjack" quest, the Foliot Lumberjack.[3]

The Foliot smelter quest feeds into the Djinni smelter quest, "Djinni Smelter" quest. The other Djinni quests cover clear weather ("Djinni Weather Mage" quest), dawn and dusk ("Djinni Time Mage" quest), the crusher ("Djinni Crusher" quest) and Light Blue Chalk ("Light Blue Chalk" quest). The Machine Operator quest, "Djinni Machine Operator" quest, also needs the Dimensional Crystal Matrix quest described below.[3]

The Afrit tier starts with "Kandar's Opened Conjure" quest (Afrit Essence) and "Red Chalk" quest (Red Chalk). The Afrit rituals are the smelter ("Afrit Smelter" quest), the crusher ("Afrit Crusher" quest) and the rain and thunderstorm summonings ("Afrit Weather Mage" quest). Marid quests come after those: the crusher ("Marid Crusher" quest) and the smelter ("Marid Smelter" quest).[3]

"Black Chalk" quest asks for Witherite Dust, Black Chalk and a wither skeleton skull. It leads to "Tibira's Attraction" quest (Marid Essence) and then "Blue Chalk" quest (Blue Chalk).[3]

Storage

The storage line is a straight chain. It starts at "Storage Actuator Base" quest (Storage Actuator Base). From there you go through the stabilizers: "Tier 1 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer" quest for tier 1, "Tier 2 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer" quest for tier 2, "Tier 3 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer" quest for tier 3 and "Tier 4 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer" quest for tier 4. The end of the line is "Stabilized Dimensional Storage Actuator" quest, the Stabilized Dimensional Storage Actuator.[3]

Side quests branch off the base. "Remote Network Access" quest asks for the Stable Wormhole, and "Storage Access On-The-Go" quest asks for the Storage Accessor. "Dimensional Storage" quest wants the Dimensional Crystal Matrix and the Dimensional Storage Actuator.[3]

Mining and Iesnium

  1. "Infused Pickaxe" quest: Infused Pickaxe.[3]
  2. "Iesnium" quest: Iesnium Ingot.[3]
  3. "Iesnium Pickaxe" quest: Iesnium Pickaxe.[3]
  4. "Dimensional Mineshaft" quest: Dimensional Mineshaft.[3]
  5. The miner quests run in order: "Foliot Miner" quest for the Miner Foliot, "Ore Miner Djinni" quest for the Ore Miner Djinni, "Deep Ore Afrit Miner" quest for the Deep Ore Miner Afrit and "Master Marid Miner" quest for the Master Miner Marid. "Eldritch Ancient Miner" quest then asks for the Eldritch Ancient Miner.[3]

Related quests are "Iesnium Sacrificial Bowl" quest (an Iesnium Ritual Bowl or its dark version), "Iesnium Anvil" quest (Iesnium Anvil) and "Repairing a Miner" quest (the miner repair ritual).[3]

Other chapters also ask for this gear. In resource_generation, "Farming from the Demon Realm" quest wants any one of the four miners plus the Dimensional Mineshaft. In resources_and_you, "Dimensional Mineshaft" quest asks for the Dimensional Mineshaft.[8][9]

Familiars, possession, wild rituals and late chalks

A large group of quests is built around rituals and advancements. The familiar quests include "Hedyrin's Familiars" quest (beaver, deer, greedy or parrot), "Blacksmith Familiar" quest (blacksmith), "Guardian Familiar" quest (guardian), "Ihagan's Enthrallment Familiars" quest (bat, beholder, cthulhu, devil, dragon, drikwing, fairy, headless ratman or mummy) and "Chimera and Niggurath Familiar" quest (chimera). Possession quests include "Hedyrin's Possessions" quest, "Hedyrin's Animals" quest, "Ihagan's Enthrallment Animals" quest, "Ihagan's Enthrallment Possessions" quest and "Abras' Possessions" quest. "Osorin's Unbound Calling" quest asks for a ritual from each of several wild-invocation groups.[3]

Other quests in this group are:[3]

Unverified Several quests depend on prerequisite quests that aren't in the Occultism sources I was given, so I can't say exactly how the chapter is first unlocked.

Which Occultism config options matter?

4 parts

Most Occultism values in this pack match the mod defaults. A few were changed on purpose, and they shape how the mod feels, so start with those.[6][7][10]

Values the pack changed

Watch out: If you edit the ritual duration multiplier, write values below 1.0 with a preceding 0 in front of the decimal point. Otherwise NeoForge's config system resets the value to 1.0.[7]

The ancient eldritch miner keeps its defaults: dimensional_mineshaft.miner_ancient_eldritch.maxMiningTime is 15, dimensional_mineshaft.miner_ancient_eldritch.durability is 3200, and dimensional_mineshaft.miner_ancient_eldritch.rollsPerOperation is 1. Durability is the number of mining operations a spirit can perform before breaking.[6]

Storage actuator capacity

Storage is otherwise at mod defaults. Here are the base numbers and what each stabilizer tier adds on top.[7]

storage.unlinkWormholeOnBreak is false. Turning it on unlinks the wormhole when it breaks, so it can't act as a cheaper Storage Accessor.[7]

Toggles worth knowing

Client options

misc.divinationRodScanRange is 129 blocks, the mod default, and the config warns that a range that's too high might cause lag. misc.storageRows is 4, the number of rows shown at one time on the storage controller.[10]

If you're colorblind, the chalk glyph colors can be changed, for example visual.redChalkGlyphColor. For most types of color blindness the config recommends changing red to a green color, and it suggests 33289.[10]

What changed in Occultism between versions?

2 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Occultism 1.224.4, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. They describe the mod in general, so they don't tell you whether the pack changed any values.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Occultism were available, so any pack-specific changes to its recipes or values are unverified here.

Recent releases

  • 1.224.4 fixed ritual names in HUDs. This is the version your pack has.[2][11]
