What is Malum?

2 parts

Malum is a dark magic mod built around spirit arcana, a study of soul magic. This pack ships Malum 1.8.2. You collect spirits, then use them to make new resources, gear and magical effects.[1][2]

It is for you if you like open-ended magic. The mod places little restriction on the order you do things in, so you can chase whichever part interests you most.[1]

What it adds

  • Runewood trees, which mix nature and magic and come with a full set of wood blocks.[1]
  • Underground ores such as cthonic gold, soulstone and natural quartz, plus others you discover yourself.[1]
  • Spirit infusion, the core process for working with spirit arcana, and spirit focusing, which materializes new resources from raw spirit matter.[1]
  • Trinkets, armor, tools and weapons, each trinket and armor set with its own effect.[1]
  • Totem magic, where each spirit has its own rituals.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack gives Malum its own quest chapter, and it works as a roadmap. You start by collecting soulstone ("Soulstone" quest), runewood materials ("Runewood" quest), brilliance ("Brilliance" quest) and Cthonic Gold ("Cthonic Gold" quest). The Encyclopedia Esoterica has its own quest ("The Weeping Well" quest).[3]

Soulstone and runewood lead to the Spirit Altar and Runewood Obelisk ("Spirit Altar" quest). Soulstone also leads to the Crude Scythe ("The Reaping of Souls" quest). From those two quests the chapter branches out.[3]

The Soulstained Steel weapon quest ("Soulstained Equipment" quest) also unlocks Tyrving, which has a follow-up quest in the Wild Hunt chapter ("Tyrving" quest).[3][4]

Unverified The project page calls the in-game journal the Encyclopedia Arcana, while the pack's quests ask for the Encyclopedia Esoterica. The sources do not confirm whether these are the same item, and no in-jar guidebook was found, so follow the quest chapter for ordering.

How do you get started with Malum?

6 parts

Malum is a dark magic mod built around spirits and soul arcana. In this pack the Malum quest chapter gives you an order to follow, so you know what to make next. Here is the order I'd go in, and why.[1][3]

Start with the Encyclopedia Esoterica

The first quest in the chapter asks you to make an observation and to have the Encyclopedia Esoterica ("The Weeping Well" quest). Two quests unlock after it: one for Umbral Spirit, and one for Null Slate, Void Salts, Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead.[3]

Get Refined Soulstone

The soulstone quest wants Raw Soulstone and Refined Soulstone ("Soulstone" quest). Refined soulstone is the key early material: the Crude Scythe and the Spirit Altar are both crafted from it. You get it by smelting or blasting raw soulstone, and the same works for soulstone ore and deepslate soulstone ore.[3][5]

Craft the Crude Scythe

Once you have refined soulstone, the Crude Scythe is the next quest ("The Reaping of Souls" quest). It is your first Malum tool, and it is one of the two prerequisites for several later quests.[3][5]

Start your Runewood supply

The runewood quest ("Runewood" quest) asks for a Runewood Sapling or Azure Runewood Sapling, a Runewood Log and Runic Sap. It has no prerequisites, so you can start it at any point. The pack has Market recipes for both saplings, and it changed them from the mod's defaults.[3][5]

    Build the Spirit Altar

With soulstone and runewood in hand, the next quest ("Spirit Altar" quest) asks for a Spirit Altar and a Runewood Obelisk. It unlocks once the soulstone and runewood quests are done.[3][5]

    What opens up next

Finishing the Crude Scythe and Spirit Altar quests unlocks three quests at once. One is for Hex Ash ("Hex Ash" quest). Another is for Tainted Rock and Twisted Rock ("Rocks of Taint and Twist" quest). The third is for Hallowed Gold Ingot and Soulstained Steel Ingot ("Spiritual Metallurgy" quest). Both Hex Ash and Hallowed Gold Ingot have spirit infusion recipes, and the pack changed the Hallowed Gold Ingot one.[3][5]

Tip: The brilliance quest ("Brilliance" quest) has no prerequisites, so you can do it any time. Smelting Raw Brilliance gives you Refined Brilliance, and the Brilliant Obelisk quest opens after it.[3][5]

    How does Malum work?

    5 parts

Malum is a dark magic mod built around spirit arcana, and you learn it through a journal called the Encyclopedia Arcana. The mod's own description says the journal is very open-ended, so you can pick which parts to chase first. Be aware that the sources I have don't spell out the machine, multiblock, power, fluid or automation details. Below is what they do confirm.[1]

    The big systems

The mod describes spirit infusion as the core process for using spirit arcana. Spirit focusing is described as a way to materialize new resources from raw spirit matter. Totem magic gives each spirit its own rituals. The same page says you need Lodestone and Curios API installed alongside it.[1]

Watch out: The pack sets the Encyclopedia Arcana drop to off, so an undead mob won't hand you the book. The sources don't say how you get it in this pack.[6]

Unverified How the infusion and focusing setups are built, which multiblock shapes they use, and whether they can be automated with pipes or hoppers is not shown by the sources here, and no in-jar guidebook or reusable documentation was found for this mod.

    Spirits and soul damage

Spirits come from slain foes. A mob without its own spirit data uses the default data for its category, because spirit.defaults.defaultSpiritValues is on. spirit.noFancySpirits is off, so spirits keep their special form instead of dropping as plain items. spirit.spawner.lameSpawners is also off, so mob spawners make normal mobs, not soulless ones. The spirit_spoils attribute adds a flat amount of spirits looted from slain foes.[6][7]

If you use Iron's Spellbooks, the pack leaves both compat options off. That means its magic damage doesn't count as Soul Damage, whether a player or a non-player deals it. These are compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksPlayerSpiritDrops and compat.irons_spellbooks.ironsSpellbooksNonPlayerSpiritDrops.[6]

progression.hide_recipes is false in this pack. The config describes it as hiding some of the mod's content, and says that is the intended way to play the mod. Here that content is not hidden.[6]

    Soul Ward and Malignant Aegis

Soul Ward is a defensive layer. While it is active, magic damage taken is multiplied by 0.10000000149011612, set by soul_ward.soulWardMagic. That matches the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it.[6]

Physical damage taken while Soul Ward is active is multiplied by 0.699999988079071, set by soul_ward.soulWardPhysical. This also matches the mod default.[6]

One point of Soul Ward recovers every 100 ticks at the base rate, set by soul_ward.soulWardRate.[6]

Malignant Aegis is described as a powerful multipurpose damage resistance attribute. One point recovers every 200 ticks at the base rate (malignant_aegis.malignantAegisRate). The malignant_conversion attribute converts certain magical attributes into Malignant Aegis.[6][7]

On screen, the Soul Ward and Malignant Aegis HUD sits at an X offset of 0 from the center and a Y offset of 47 from the bottom. You can move it with ui.shieldX and ui.shieldY.[8]

    • soul_ward_capacity: the capacity for Soul Ward.[7]
    • soul_ward_integrity: a percentile increase in durability for Soul Ward.[7]
    • soul_ward_recovery_rate: a percentile increase in recovery rate for Soul Ward.[7]
    • soul_ward_recovery_gain: a percentile increase in the amount of Soul Ward recovered.[7]

    Magic damage and staffs

With magic_damage.magicDamageReducedArmorPiercing on, damage types tagged malum:bypasses_half_armor pierce only half of the player's armor stat, and armor takes no durability damage from them.[6]

Staffs use Spell Charges. One segment of a staff charge recovers every 100 ticks at the base rate (staff_charge.staffChargeRate). The capacity, duration and recovery rate of charges are all attributes. The capacitor enchantment adds extra Spell Charges, and replenishing restores charges when you deal melee damage with the staff.[6][7]

The geas_limit attribute caps how many Geas Bindings you can have sworn at once.[7]

    Crafting-grid conversions

Many of Malum's materials can be packed into a storage block and unpacked again. Blazing quartz and arcane charcoal also split into fragments and recombine. All of these are plain crafting-table recipes.[5]

    Crafting Shapeless

    Recipe id: malum:blazing_quartz_fragment

A Soulwoven Banner can be upgraded in the crafting grid by combining it with certain Malum items in shapeless recipes. The recipe ids are banner_crafting_hallucination, banner_crafting_heft, banner_crafting_horns and banner_crafting_hunger. Here is one of them.[5]

How do you progress through Malum?

    7 parts

Malum's quest chapter in this pack is a branching tree, not a single line. The quests have no titles, so this section names each one by what it asks for. Five quests have no prerequisites and are where you start: "Soulstone" quest (raw and refined soulstone), "Runewood" quest (a runewood sapling, a log and runic sap), "Brilliance" quest (raw and refined brilliance), "Cthonic Gold" quest (cthonic gold) and "The Weeping Well" quest (the Encyclopedia Esoterica plus an observation task).[3]

    Stage 1: Soulstone and Runewood

Refined soulstone is the base of the whole tree. In this pack you get it by smelting or blasting Soulstone Ore, Deepslate Soulstone Ore, Raw Soulstone or Crushed Soulstone. Brilliance works the same way, with Brilliant Stone, Brilliant Deepslate, Raw Brilliance or Crushed Brilliance all smelting into Refined Brilliance.[5]

Tip: The pack changed the Create washing recipe for Crushed Soulstone. It now gives Hex Ash and Refined Soulstone. The crushed brilliance washing recipe is also pack-changed and gives Refined Brilliance plus a Nugget of Experience.[5]

Once you have both the Crude Scythe and the Spirit Altar quests, three quests open up. "Hex Ash" quest wants Hex Ash. "Rocks of Taint and Twist" quest wants Tainted Rock and Twisted Rock. "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest wants Hallowed Gold Ingot and Soulstained Steel Ingot.[3]

Both ingots are made by spirit infusion, and the pack changed both recipes. Don't trust a mod default you remember from elsewhere. Use these:[5]

    The rock branch

The tainted and twisted rock quest leads to "Spirit Crucible" quest, which asks for the Spirit Crucible and Alchemical Impetus. Two more quests follow it: "Repair Pylon" quest for the Repair Pylon and "Spirit Catalyzer" quest for the Spirit Catalyzer.[3]

The Encyclopedia branch and Malignant Pewter

The Encyclopedia Esoterica quest opens two paths. "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest asks for an Umbral Spirit plus an item from another mod. "The Well's Returns" quest asks for Null Slate, Void Salts, Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead. That second quest leads to "Conscious Weapons" quest (Sundering Anchor and Unwinding Chaos), "Mnemonic Hex Staff" quest (Mnemonic Hex Staff) and "Malignant Pewter" quest (Malignant Pewter Ingot and Malignant Pewter Plating).[3]

    Spirit Infusion (malum)

    Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/malignant_pewter_ingot

Two quests follow the pewter quest. "Malignant Weapons" quest asks for the Edge of Deliverance, Weight of Worlds and Erosion Scepter. "Malignant Armor" quest asks for the full Malignant Stronghold armor set.[3]

    The totem branch

"Totemic Rites" quest asks for the Runewood Totem Base. It follows the runewood quest and one more prerequisite. After it come "Unchained Blight" quest (Soulwood Log and Soulwood Sapling) and then "Large Strange Crystal" quest (Large Strange Crystal).[3]

How does Malum work with other mods?

    6 parts

Malum doesn't live in isolation in this pack. Most of the links to other mods come from recipes the pack adds or changes, and a few come from Malum's own recipes producing items from other namespaces. Here is what connects to what.[5]

    Create

The pack changes Malum's Create crushing recipes for its ores. Crushing Soulstone Ore, Deepslate Soulstone Ore, Raw Soulstone or the brilliance ores gives you Nugget of Experience alongside the crushed Malum material. Cthonic Gold Ore and Cthonic Gold crush into Crushed Raw Gold, and the ore also gives a Cthonic Gold Fragment. Crushing Blazing Quartz Ore gives Blazing Quartz.[5]

Washing is changed too. Crushed Brilliance becomes Refined Brilliance plus an experience nugget. Haunting Soulstone from Mystical Agriculture gives you a Block of Raw Soulstone, a pack-added way into Malum's soulstone line.[5]

Create's cutting recipes, which the pack adds, also strip Runewood Log, Runewood, Soulwood Log and Soulwood. Each one gives Tree Bark on top of the stripped block.[5]

    Metals from Malum nodes

Malum's metal nodes (aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, osmium, silver, tin, uranium and zinc) both smelt and blast into nuggets, for example Copper Node into Copper Nugget. The pack changed all of these recipes, so the results are not Malum's defaults.[5]

Washing is a second route for two of them. A copper node gives a copper nugget plus a Clay Ball, and a zinc node gives a zinc nugget plus Gunpowder.[5]

    Farmer's Delight and Mekanism

On a Farmer's Delight cutting board, any axe strips Runewood and Soulwood logs and blocks for Tree Bark. The same goes for turning Exposed Runewood Log and Exposed Soulwood Log into their revealed versions.[5]

If you have lots of foliage, Mekanism crushing turns Runewood Leaves, Azure Runewood Leaves and Soulwood Leaves into Bio Fuel. These recipes are added by the pack.[5]

    Mystical Agriculture and Modern Industrialization

The pack lets you craft Natural Quartz from Mystical Agriculture essences, which is handy if you don't want to hunt for the ore.[5]

A Modern Industrialization quarry recipe added by the pack uses the Infused Pickaxe and can produce several Malum ores: Blazing Quartz Ore, Brilliant Stone, Cthonic Gold Ore and Soulstone Ore. They come out alongside ores from Occultism, Silent Gear and XyCraft.[5]

Malum items in the pack's progression recipes

Several pack-added recipes need Malum items for higher-tier crafts. Cognition's molecular metamorphosis uses Fused Consciousness for Realized Transcendence and Iridescent Ether for Ethereal Essence.[5]

Create sequenced assembly uses Refined Brilliance for Elemental Arcanite and Living Flesh for Evolutionary Matter. The Industrial Foregoing dissolution chamber takes Cursed Sapball for Dissolved Potential. The Enchanted kettle takes Paracausal Flame for Omega Dragon Egg.[5]

Two crafting-table recipes also call for Malum items. The pack's end portal frame uses Ether, and VoidShimmer Goo uses Null Slate.[5]

    Gaze items made with Malum

Malum's runeworking, spirit infusion and soul binding recipes produce items in the gaze namespace. Runes such as Rune of Eir and Rune of Ymir need an Umbral Spirit, and infused gear such as Spirit Saber, Veil's Edge and Seidhr calls for Malum materials like Malignant Pewter Plating and Hallowed Gold Ingot.[5]

    Veil's EdgeMod recipe

    Spirit Infusion (malum)

    Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/veil_dagger

Veil's Edge is the gaze item the Malum questline asks for.

The questline follows this link. After the quest for the Encyclopedia Esoterica, "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest asks for an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Malum?

    5 parts

Malum has its own quest chapter in the pack, plus one extra quest in the Wild Hunt chapter. The quests have no titles in the pack data, so I'll refer to them by their quest IDs and walk you through the chain in the order the prerequisites unlock it.[3][4]

    Where you start

Five quests in the Malum chapter have no prerequisites, so you can take them in any order.[3]

    Spirit Altar line

"The Reaping of Souls" quest follows the soulstone quest and asks for a Crude Scythe. "Spirit Altar" quest needs both the soulstone and the runewood quests, and asks for a Spirit Altar and a Runewood Obelisk.[3]

Once you have the scythe and the altar, three quests open up. "Hex Ash" quest wants Hex Ash. "Rocks of Taint and Twist" quest wants Tainted Rock and Twisted Rock. "Spiritual Metallurgy" quest wants a Hallowed Gold Ingot and a Soulstained Steel Ingot.[3]

    Encyclopedia line

Two quests unlock after "The Weeping Well" quest. "The Well's Returns" quest asks for Null Slate, Void Salts, Mnemonic Fragment and Malignant Lead. "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest asks for an Umbral Spirit and a gaze:veil_dagger from another mod.[3]

Three quests follow the materials quest. "Conscious Weapons" quest wants the Sundering Anchor and Unwinding Chaos. "Mnemonic Hex Staff" quest wants the Mnemonic Hex Staff. "Malignant Pewter" quest wants Malignant Pewter Ingot and Malignant Pewter Plating.[3]

The pewter quest is the last step of this line. It opens "Malignant Weapons" quest, which wants the Edge of Deliverance, Weight of Worlds and Erosion Scepter. It also opens "Malignant Armor" quest, which wants the four Malignant Stronghold armor pieces.[3]

    Brilliance and Runewood totem lines

    The Wild Hunt connection

Malum also shows up in the Wild Hunt chapter. "Tyrving" quest asks for Tyrving again and unlocks after the Soulstained Steel tools quest, "Soulstained Equipment" quest. So you can pick up that tool quest and carry on in the Wild Hunt chapter.[3][4]

    Which Malum config options matter?

    5 parts

Malum has a client config, a common config and two structure configs in this pack. The only values the sources explicitly label as matching the mod default are the two Soul Ward multipliers. For every other option the mod default isn't stated, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed it. What follows is exactly how the pack sets each option.[6][8][9][10]

    Codex and progression

    • codex.enableCodexDrop is false in this pack. When it's true, one of the first undead enemies a player slays drops the encyclopedia arcana, so you shouldn't count on that drop here.[6]
    • progression.hide_recipes is false, so the pack does not hide that part of Malum's content. The option's own description says turning it on is the intended way to play the mod.[6]

Unverified How you obtain the encyclopedia arcana in this pack, now that the undead drop is disabled, isn't confirmed by the available sources.

    Soul Ward, Aegis and staffs

    Spirits and compat

    Weeping Well generation

    The Weeping Well is enabled through weeping_well.weeping_well, set to true. Its placement uses weeping_well.spacing = 24, weeping_well.separation = 18 and weeping_well.salt = 546451665.[9][10]

    Client options

    • ui.shieldX is 0 and ui.shieldY is 47. They set the offsets for the Soul Ward and Malignant Aegis HUD elements: X from the center of the screen, Y from the bottom.[8]
    • scarf.scarfLength is 30 and scarf.scarfOpacity is 0.4. Length affects every rendered Malignant Stronghold Scarf, not just yours. Opacity is how visible your own scarf is in first person.[8]
    • codex.bookTheme is DEFAULT (EASY_READING is the other allowed value), and codex.scrollDirection is false, so page scrolling in codex entries isn't reversed.[8]
Tip: renderpass.renderParallelWorld is true in this pack. If you see framerate problems, this is the option the config itself says to disable.[8]

What changed in Malum between versions?

    1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships with Malum 1.8.2. The mod was already in the pack by FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack since the early releases.[2]

The changelog for Malum 1.8.2 doesn't list any changes. It only points you to the mod's CurseForge page, so I can't tell you what changed in that release.[11]

    Earlier mod release

    • Malum 1.7.3.1 fixed a bug where Spirit Spoils applied itself permanently onto an entity's spirit data.[12]

Unverified No FTB Skies 2 pack changelog entries for Malum were available, so any pack-specific changes to the mod across releases are unconfirmed.
