What is FTB Materials?

1 part

FTB Materials is the pack's supplier of basic building-block materials. This pack ships version 21.1.2 of the NeoForge build. Think of it as the shared pool of metals and processed resources that the bigger tech mods ask you for.[1]

It adds items such as Steel Ingot, Iron Plate, Iron Rod, Copper Wire, Copper Chunk and Sulfur Dust. These show up as quest tasks all over the pack, so you'll run into them no matter which tech path you take.[2][3][4][5]

Where it fits in the progression

The mod has no questline of its own. Its items appear as tasks inside other mods' chapters, spread from the early game to the late game.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Tip: Steel Ingot is requested in the Modern Industrialization, Mekanism, Immersive Engineering and MFFS chapters, so it's worth getting a steady supply early.[2][4][6][10]

Unverified No mod description, in-jar guidebook or platform page was available for FTB Materials, so how each material is obtained and whether the pack changed any of its recipes or configs are not confirmed here.

How do you get started with FTB Materials?

6 parts

FTB Materials supplies many of the metals, dusts, chunks and plates this pack uses, and the pack has added or changed a lot of the recipes that make them. The quest book asks for these items across several chapters, so it is a good guide to what to make first. Here are the items I would start with.[2][7][9][11]

Zinc ingot

A quest in the beginning chapter, a quest in "?", asks for a Zinc Ingot. Zinc is worth getting early because the pack's brass mixing recipe uses it. The pack smelts zinc dust into an ingot, and there is a blasting version of that recipe too.[9][11]

A blasting version also exists in the pack.

Plates with the Create press

In the Create chapter, a quest in "?" asks for an Iron Plate, Copper Plate or Gold Plate, together with a Mechanical Press. In this pack the plates are made by pressing ingots, so the press is your first real machine. Iron plates are a good one to start with, because quests in several chapters ask for them.[2][4][7][11]

Steel and coal coke

Steel shows up in several chapters. a quest in "?" in the Immersive Engineering chapter asks for a Steel Ingot, and a quest in "?" in the Modern Industrialization chapter pairs one with a steel machine casing. In this pack you can smelt or blast Steel Dust into an ingot.[2][4][11]

Raw resources

The resources_and_you chapter asks for items like Copper Chunk, Tin Chunk, Lead Chunk and Gold Chunk.[3]

Unverified How to obtain the chunk items (copper, tin, lead, gold and others) in this pack is not confirmed here. Check the quest descriptions in-game.

How does FTB Materials work?

4 parts

Here's the honest picture for this section: the sources I have for FTB Materials only show crafting recipes. They don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, so I'm not going to guess at any of that. What they do show is how the pack wires its materials together through the crafting grid.[11]

Compressing and decompressing in the crafting grid

The pack adds simple compress and decompress recipes for some materials, all done by hand. You can pack Fluorite Gem into a Block of Fluorite and break the block back down again. Coal Coke Gem and Block of Coal Coke work the same way.[11]

The pack also adds recipes that split vanilla items into smaller pieces: Tiny Coal, Tiny Charcoal, Copper Nugget and Netherite Nugget. All of these are shapeless crafting recipes added by the pack.[11]

Metal conversions use item tags

The aluminum and antimony conversion recipes (ingots, nuggets, blocks, raw blocks, dust and tiny dust) are marked as changed by the pack. They take any item from the matching common tag rather than one specific item. So an ingot, nugget or dust from another mod that carries the same tag can be used in these recipes.[11]

Unverified Whether FTB Materials adds any machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems, or any automation behavior, could not be confirmed. The sources provided contain no guidebook, tooltips or configs for this mod, and the recipe excerpt I could see only covers crafting recipes.

How do you progress through FTB Materials?

5 parts

FTB Materials is the glue between the other mods in this pack, so there isn't one neat tier ladder to follow. The pack's quests ask you for its items inside other chapters (resources, Create, Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism, AE2 and more). The order below follows those quests and the in-pack recipes behind them.[2][3][4][6][7][8]

Stage 1: chunks and dusts

The resources chapter is your first contact with the mod. Its quests ask for Copper Chunk, Tin Chunk, Lead Chunk, Gold Chunk, Diamond Chunk, Emerald Chunk and Redstone Chunk. They also ask for Bauxite Dust, Niter Dust and Sulfur Dust.[3]

Sulfur has several routes in this pack. Create crushing a blaze rod gives it, an Ender IO Sag Mill turns coal into Coal Dust plus sulfur, and a Modern Industrialization mixer makes it from charcoal dust and gunpowder.[11]

Stage 2: zinc, plates and brass

The opening chapter asks for a Zinc Ingot (a quest in "?"). The pack smelts it from zinc dust, and other routes exist too: blasting or smelting crushed zinc, or an Immersive Engineering arc furnace.[9][11]

Create's quest (a quest in "?") wants an iron, copper or gold plate plus a mechanical press. The pack adds pressing recipes for Iron Plate, Copper Plate, Gold Plate and Brass Plate in both the Create press and the Immersive Engineering metal press.[7][11]

Brass follows in a quest in "?", then the brass plate in a quest in "?". The pack changed the Create mixing recipe for Brass Ingot, so use the version shown here.[7][11]

Copper Wire is needed for the Immersive Engineering quest (a quest in "?"). You can make it from copper plates in several machines: a Create cutter, an Immersive Engineering metal press, a Modern Industrialization wiremill, or the stonecutter.[4][11]

Stage 3: bronze, coke and steel

The Modern Industrialization chapter starts with a small parts quest (a quest in "?") that asks for Copper Rod, Iron Plate and Copper Plate. Bronze Ingot comes next in a quest in "?". The pack adds alloy smelter recipes that make bronze from copper and tin ingots or from their dusts.[2][11]

Coal coke is requested in both Modern Industrialization (a quest in "?") and Immersive Engineering (a quest in "?"). Coal Coke Dust smelts or blasts into Coal Coke Gem. You can get the dust by crushing coke in Create or Mekanism, or by hitting it with a hammer on a cutting board.[2][4][11]

Steel Ingot is the big gate. Quests in Modern Industrialization (a quest in "?"), Immersive Engineering (a quest in "?"), Mekanism (a quest in "?") and MFFS (a quest in "?") all ask for it. In the pack, Steel Dust smelts or blasts into the ingot.[2][4][6][10][11]

Stage 4: aluminum, silicon and specialty dusts

Stage 5: Mekanism materials and late metals

Mekanism's quests collect Sulfur Dust, Fluorite Gem and Uranium Ingot together (a quest in "?"). A block of fluorite can be uncrafted into gems, and fluorite dust smelts or blasts into the gem. The obsidian line then runs through Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust (a quest in "?") to Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot (a quest in "?"). Lithium Dust has its own quest (a quest in "?").[6][11]

Create also uses obsidian dust and a crushing wheel (a quest in "?") before asking for an Obsidian Plate (a quest in "?"). The pack changed the sequenced assembly recipe that makes it.[7][11]

Obsidian PlateChanged by the pack

Sequenced Assembly (create)

Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/sturdy_sheet

The final Modern Industrialization quests ask for Tungsten Ingot (a quest in "?"), Raw Platinum (a quest in "?"), Titanium Ingot (a quest in "?"), Platinum Ingot (a quest in "?") and Raw Iridium (a quest in "?").[2]

The pack adds a shortcut for tungsten: crushing tungsten ore in Create, Mekanism, Immersive Engineering, Ender IO or Actually Additions gives the Tungsten Ingot directly. Crushing platinum or iridium ore gives you the raw ore, which the pack then smelts, blasts or arc-furnaces into platinum ingots.[11]

Tip: Silver is a side branch. The Occultism quest (a quest in "?") asks for a Silver Ingot, and the pack changed the Ars Nouveau imbuement recipe that transmutes a gold ingot into silver. Ore and dust routes also exist.[11][12]

Unverified The sources don't show how to craft Titanium Ingots or Ruby Dust, and the pack doesn't define official tier names for FTB Materials, so the stages above are only a grouping by quest position.

How does FTB Materials work with other mods?

5 parts

FTB Materials supplies the metals, dusts, plates and gems that show up in recipes and quests from many other mods in this pack. Here are the main connections, taken from in-pack recipes and quests.[11]

Mekanism: ore processing chain

The pack adds a Mekanism processing line for FTB Materials metals, including aluminum, antimony, copper, gold, iridium, iron and lead. Purifying with Liquid Oxygen gives clumps, such as Iron Clump and Gold Clump. Injecting with Liquid Hydrogen Chloride gives shards, such as Copper Shard and Iridium Shard. Crystallizing gives crystals, such as Aluminum Crystal and Antimony Crystal. These recipes are added by the pack. The clump and shard steps accept ores, raw materials and raw storage blocks, and each can also start from the previous stage (shards for clumps, crystals for shards).[11]

The Mekanism quest chapter also asks for FTB Materials items. One quest asks for Uranium Ingot, Fluorite Gem and Sulfur Dust (a quest in "?"). Another covers Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust (a quest in "?"). Lithium dust has its own quest (a quest in "?"). Fluorite ore exists in two forms here, Fluorite Ore and Fluorite Ore, and the recipe below is how the pack converts one into the other.[6][11]

Create

Several Create recipes were changed by the pack to output FTB Materials items. Crushing Asurine gives Zinc Nugget alongside Crushed Raw Zinc. Crushing Veridium gives Copper Nugget alongside Crushed Raw Copper. Splashing crushed raw copper, zinc and uranium also gives nuggets. The sturdy sheet sequenced assembly produces an Obsidian Plate.[11]

The Create quest chapter ties in plates, brass and obsidian. One quest asks for an iron, copper or gold plate plus the mechanical press (a quest in "?"). Later quests ask for Brass Ingot and Brass Plate. Another pairs Obsidian Dust with the crushing wheel (a quest in "?"), and a follow-up asks for the obsidian plate (a quest in "?").[7]

AE2, ExtendedAE and Geore

The pack changed Quartz Blend to give Silicon when smelted, blasted or enriched in Mekanism. Decompressing a Block of Silicon gives the same item. The AE2 quest chapter pairs it with printed silicon (a quest in "?").[8][11]

AE2 transform recipes added by the pack use FTB Materials items in other ways. Cognitive Flux with an iron block and molten ender becomes Block of Aluminum. Quartz Dust with a dye and molten kivi becomes the Xychorium gems, such as Blue Xychorium Gem. Budding Osmium GeOre uses Block of Silver and Obsidian Dust. Geore shards also smelt or blast into Sapphire Gem, Monazite Dust and Tungsten Ingot.[11]

Silver, magic mods and odds and ends

  • The Occultism quest chapter asks for a Silver Ingot (a quest in "?"), and the pack changed the Ars Nouveau imbuement recipe for it (shown below).[11][12]
  • A Malum favor of the void recipe, added by the pack, turns a Block of Silver into an Iesnium Ingot.[11]
  • The pack also adds Lychee recipes that use FTB Materials dusts with compressed blocks, and a Lychee item-exploding recipe for gears. They are shown below.[11]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use FTB Materials?

6 parts

FTB Materials items show up as quest tasks in many chapters of this pack: metals, plates, rods, dusts and chunks that you hand in alongside items from other mods. The quests in the sources have no titles, so I describe each one by what it asks for. The order inside a chapter comes from each quest's prerequisites. Many prerequisites point at quests that aren't listed here, so I only describe an order where both quests are known.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][12]

Modern Industrialization

This chapter has the most quests for the mod. It has two quests that both unlock from the same earlier quest. a quest in "?" asks for two Copper Rod, a Copper Bolt, two Iron Plate, a Copper Plate and two Copper Curved Plate. a quest in "?" asks for a Steel Ingot and a Steel Machine Casing.[2]

Resources and You

Every quest listed in this chapter asks for a single raw-material item: Lead Chunk (a quest in "?"), Gold Chunk (a quest in "?"), Bauxite Dust (a quest in "?"), Niter Dust (a quest in "?"), Diamond Chunk (a quest in "?"), Tin Chunk (a quest in "?"), Sulfur Dust (a quest in "?"), Copper Chunk (a quest in "?"), Emerald Chunk (a quest in "?") and Redstone Chunk (a quest in "?"). Each one comes after a pair of earlier quests that aren't covered here.[3]

Mekanism

Create

a quest in "?" accepts an Iron Plate, Copper Plate or Gold Plate, together with a Mechanical Press. It leads to a quest in "?" for a Brass Ingot, then a quest in "?" for a Brass Plate. A second line starts at a quest in "?", which asks for Obsidian Dust and a Crushing Wheel. After that comes a quest in "?", which asks for an Obsidian Plate.[7]

Immersive Engineering

a quest in "?" asks for an Engineer's Wire Cutters, an Iron Plate and Copper Wire. a quest in "?" asks for a Steel Ingot, and a quest in "?" asks for Coal Coke Dust.[4]
