What is Mekanism?
1 part
Mekanism is a big tech mod built around high-tech machinery, energy, gadgets and seriously efficient ore processing. Smelting an ore straight into an ingot wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization machines let you double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore, as long as you have the infrastructure and the energy to run them.[1]
The mod is designed for gradual progression, with low, mid and high tier machinery for whatever stage you're at. Every machine can be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once. That means no more walls of furnaces. Other highlights include the Digital Miner, jetpacks, the Robit, the Fusion Reactor and transmitters for items, fluids, gases, energy and heat.[1]
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Mekanism together with its official Generators and Tools addons, all on version 10.7.19.[2]
Mekanism Generators is where your power comes from. Without it you'd need another mod to run your machines. It adds the Heat, Gas-Burning, Bio, Solar, Advanced Solar and Wind generators, plus the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine multiblocks.[3]
Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools, including the Paxel, an axe, pickaxe and shovel multitool. These come in Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. There are also Paxels for wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond.[4]
Where it fits in FTB Skies 2
The pack has a dedicated Mekanism quest chapter. It opens with the Heat Generator so you have power from the start. From there you move to the Metallurgic Infuser, then Infused Alloy, control circuits, Enriched Iron and a Steel Ingot.[5]
The Steel Casing quest is the big hub. It branches out to the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Purification Chamber and Energized Smelter. It also unlocks machine upgrades, tier installers and the Thermal Evaporation multiblock.[5]
Later quests move you into Enriched Diamond, Reinforced Alloy and the Elite Control Circuit. You'll also build the Bio-Generator and Gas-Burning Generator and the Isotopic Centrifuge. A separate quest has you gear up with the hazmat suit and a Radioactive Waste Barrel.[5]
How do you get started with Mekanism?
5 parts
Mekanism in FTB Skies 2 has its own quest chapter, and it gives you a clear path through the early game. The first steps go in this order: get power, build a Metallurgic Infuser, make steel and circuits, then craft a Steel Casing. The Steel Casing unlocks almost every early machine.[5]
Step 1: Get some power
Mekanism machines need energy, and Mekanism Generators is the addon that supplies it. Without it you would need another mod to power your machines. The first generator the Mekanism chapter asks for is the Heat Generator in "Generating Power" quest. Its advancement sums it up: craft a Heat Generator to start making power.[3][5][7]
The pack's power chapter also has quests for the Heat Generator, the Wind Generator and the Solar Generator or Advanced Solar Generator. These are good options once your first generator is running.[8]
Step 2: Build the Metallurgic Infuser
Once your Heat Generator is done, the next quest is the Metallurgic Infuser. Build it early, because two important quests unlock straight after it.[5]
- "Redstone Infusion" quest asks for Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit.[5]
- "Carbon Infusion" quest asks for Enriched Iron and a steel ingot.[5]
Step 3: Steel, the Configurator and transport
After the steel quest, several things open up at once. You get the Steel Casing, the Configurator and the basic transport blocks: Basic Universal Cable, Basic Mechanical Pipe, Basic Pressurized Tube and Basic Logistical Transporter. The Configurator is the tool for changing the settings of blocks. The logistics chapter starts with it and branches out into all four transport types.[5][6][9]
Step 4: Steel Casing unlocks the machines
The Steel Casing quest is the big hub of the chapter. From here you can go for the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Energized Smelter and Purification Chamber. It also leads to the Speed Upgrade and Energy Upgrade and to tier installers. Ore processing is Mekanism's main draw, since it can double, triple or even quintuple your ingots per ore if you have enough infrastructure and energy.[1][5]
Your circuits also unlock quests for an Energy Tablet and an energy cube, starting with the Basic Energy Cube, plus the Basic Bin for storage.[5]
Pack bonus: Bio Fuel from leaves
Once you have a Crusher, the pack adds its own crushing recipes that turn many kinds of leaves into Bio Fuel. The quests then lead from Bio Fuel to the Bio-Generator, which gives you a second way to make power. Here is one example of these crushing recipes:[5][10]

How does Mekanism work?
7 parts
Mekanism is a full tech mod. It gives you low, mid and high tier machines, energy generation, transmission systems for moving resources around, and a deep ore processing chain. The core idea is steady progression: at whatever stage you're at, there's a tier of machinery that fits.[1]
This guide covers three modules together. Mekanism provides the machines and logistics. Mekanism Generators provides the power generation. Mekanism Tools adds tools and armor.[1][3][4]
Making power
Mekanism machines run on energy, but the base mod doesn't make any. Without Mekanism Generators, you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines, which is why this pack includes Generators alongside it.[3]
- Heat Generator: the generator you craft to start making power.[3][7]
- Solar Generator and Advanced Solar Generator: renewable energy, but only during the daytime.[3][7]
- Wind Generator: its output depends on having wind nearby.[3][7]
- Gas-Burning Generator: burns Ethene for power.[3][7]
- Bio-Generator: another option in the Generators lineup.[3]
- Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine: the big late-game power setups.[3]
To move your power around, you use Universal Cable. To store any excess, you build an Energy Cube.[9]
Moving fluids, chemicals, heat and items
Mekanism has a separate transmitter for each kind of resource. You'll use several of them side by side once your setup grows.[9]
- Universal Cable carries energy.[9]
- Mechanical Pipe carries fluids.[9]
- Pressurized Tube carries chemicals.[9]
- Thermodynamic Conductor carries heat.[9]
- You can upgrade transmitters that are already placed in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them. You don't have to rip out your whole network to upgrade it.[9]
For storage, a Basic Fluid Tank holds your fluids and a Basic Chemical Tank holds almost all of your chemicals. For items, you can use a QIO Drive, and higher-tier QIO Drives increase its storage bandwidth.[9]

Ore processing
This is where Mekanism really shines. If you smelt an ore straight into an ingot, you're wasting most of what you mined. Mekanism's processing chain uses purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore. How far you get depends on how much infrastructure and energy you invest.[1]
Your first step is the Enrichment Chamber, which increases your material efficiency. Further up the chain you'll build the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and Washer.[9]

Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded to a factory, which processes several items at once in a single block. The numbers are 3 at basic, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate. That lets you replace whole walls of furnaces with one machine.[1]
You can get a factory by crafting one directly, or by using a Tier Installer on a machine.[9]
Configuring your machines
The Configurator is how you change the settings of Mekanism blocks. Once you've set up one machine the way you like it, a Configuration Card lets you copy that configuration onto another machine. That saves a lot of clicking when you're building rows of the same machine.[9]

The Dictionary is a handy little helper that shows you the generic tags of blocks and items in the world around you.[9]
How the Fission Reactor scales
The Fission Reactor's configuration describes how its size and parts shape what it can do. The actual values set in this pack aren't shown in the sources, so treat this as how it works rather than exact numbers.[7]
- Each fuel assembly adds to the reactor's fuel and waste capacity.[7]
- Each fuel assembly also raises the maximum burn rate, so more assemblies let you burn faster.[7]
- Every block of the reactor's volume adds capacity for both cooled and heated coolant.[7]
- Each casing block adds heat capacity. More heat capacity means it takes more energy to raise the reactor's temperature.[7]
- Burning fission fuel creates energy in the form of heat for every mB burned.[7]
- If the output waste tank fills past a set percentage, the reactor's excess waste behavior kicks in.[7]
Unverified Whether meltdowns are enabled in FTB Skies 2 1.22.0, and the pack's values for the fission reactor settings, could not be confirmed.
Tools and armor
Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. The standout tool is the Paxel, a pickaxe, axe and shovel rolled into one. You can also make Paxels in the vanilla materials: wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond.[4][11]
Unverified How multiblocks such as the Dynamic Tank and the boiler are assembled, and exactly how the Formulaic Assemblicator automates crafting, could not be confirmed. The recipes for their parts exist in this pack under mekanism:dynamic_tank, mekanism:dynamic_valve, mekanism:boiler_casing, mekanism:boiler_valve and mekanism:formulaic_assemblicator.
How do you progress through Mekanism?
6 parts
In FTB Skies 2, the Mekanism quest chapter lays out a clear path from your first Heat Generator all the way to fission, fusion and the MekaSuit. The four tiers are basic, advanced, elite and ultimate, and they follow the control circuits and alloys the quests ask for. Here's the route the pack takes you on.[5]
Getting started
The first quests ask for a Heat Generator, a Basic Fluid Tank, a Basic Chemical Tank and a set of radiation gear. That gear quest wants the Hazmat Mask, Hazmat Gown, Hazmat Pants, Hazmat Boots and a Radioactive Waste Barrel. You won't need that protection for a while, but it is one of the requirements for the fission reactor later.[5]
The Heat Generator quest leads to the Metallurgic Infuser, and that machine is the real heart of the early game. From there the chapter splits into two branches. One asks for Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit. The other asks for Enriched Iron and a steel ingot.[5]
Basic tier: steel and your first machines
Once you have steel, the quests open up basic transport: the Basic Universal Cable, Basic Mechanical Pipe, Basic Pressurized Tube and Basic Logistical Transporter. You also unlock the Configurator and the all-important Steel Casing.[5]
Steel Casing is the big hub of the chapter. Lots of quests branch from it, including these:[5]
- Processing machines: the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Energized Smelter and Purification Chamber.[5]
- Upgrades and tools: the Speed Upgrade, Energy Upgrade, Chemical Upgrade, Muffling Upgrade, Configuration Card, Gauge Dropper and Cardboard Box.[5]
- Tier installers: the quest accepts any tier, from the Basic Tier Installer up to the Ultimate Tier Installer.[5]
- Chemistry: the Electrolytic Separator, Chemical Oxidizer and Rotary Condensentrator. There's also the Thermal Evaporation multiblock, which leads to Liquid Lithium Bucket and, together with Steel Casing, to the Chemical Infuser.[5]
Meanwhile, the alloy and circuit branch leads to the Basic Bin and to an Energy Tablet plus an energy cube of any tier. That opens up Free Runners, the Chargepad, and a choice of Wind, Solar or Advanced Solar Generator.[5]
Bio Fuel and early power
Your Crusher leads to Bio Fuel, and from there to the Bio-Generator. The pack adds a big batch of its own crushing recipes that produce Bio Fuel, so you can feed your Crusher from lots of different sources. Here's one of them:[5][10]
One of many pack-added crushing recipes for Bio Fuel
Bio Fuel and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber together lead to Substrate. Substrate then unlocks the Gas-Burning Generator and the HDPE quest, which in turn leads to the Solar Neutron Activator.[5]
Elite and ultimate tiers
Higher tiers start with the Enrichment Chamber. That leads to Enriched Diamond, which unlocks Reinforced Alloy and then the Elite Control Circuit. Enriched Diamond also leads to the obsidian quest for Enriched Obsidian. That quest also unlocks the Osmium Compressor.[5]
Atomic Alloy needs both the Reinforced Alloy and the obsidian quests. The Ultimate Control Circuit needs both the Elite circuit and Atomic Alloy quests. The Elite circuit plus the Chemical Infuser also unlocks the Chemical Injection Chamber.[5]
The Ultimate circuit is where the late-game utility opens up. It unlocks the Chemical Crystallizer, the Chemical Washer, the Chemical Dissolution Chamber and the Teleportation Core. The Teleportation Core is the gateway to the Teleporter, Quantum Entangloporter, Digital Miner and the whole QIO storage line, starting with the QIO Drive Array and QIO Dashboard.[5]
Endgame: reactors and the MekaSuit
The fission reactor quest needs several earlier quests: the radiation gear, the Elite circuit and the Isotopic Centrifuge. Fission then unlocks the industrial turbine, the Fission Reactor Logic Adapter, and the Plutonium Pellet and Polonium Pellet quest. Those pellets are the key to the Supercritical Phase Shifter, the fusion reactor, Reprocessed Fissile Fragment, and finally the Meka-Tool with MekaSuit armor and the Modification Station.[5]
Tiers in other chapters
Mekanism also shows up outside its own chapter. The logistics chapter starts with the Configurator, and its cable, pipe, tube and transporter quests accept any of the four tiers. The power chapter has quests for the Solar, Wind and Heat Generators.[6][8]
The resources chapter also has a quest for Dirty Netherite Scrap.[13]
Unverified The Induction Casing quest for the induction matrix depends on a quest that is not in the provided sources, so exactly when it unlocks is unverified.
How does Mekanism work with other mods?
7 parts
Mekanism doesn't live on its own island in this pack. The pack adds a lot of custom recipes that link Mekanism items with other mods, from conduits and circuits to fuel and endgame items. Here's what you can do with them.[10]
Ender IO conduit bundles
If you use Ender IO's Conduit Bundle, the pack lets you put Mekanism transport into it. There are recipes for the Basic Pressurized Tube, Advanced Pressurized Tube, Elite Pressurized Tube and Advanced Thermodynamic Conductor. So your chemical lines and heat transfer can share a single block with your other conduits.[10]

Bio Fuel from modded leaves
The pack adds a large set of crushing recipes that turn leaves from other mods into Bio Fuel. These include Chipped leaf variants, Ars Nouveau and Ars Elemental archwood leaves, Malum runewood and soulwood leaves, Occultism otherworld leaves, and leaves from Enchanted, Integrated Dynamics, Roots and Silent Gear. XyCraft's Resin Ball works too.[10]
Crushing (mekanism)

That's handy because the quest line goes from the Crusher quest to the Bio Fuel quest "Bio Fuel" quest. That quest then leads on to the Bio-Generator in "Bio-Fuel Power" quest and to Substrate in "Ethene" quest.[5]
Modern Industrialization
The Elite Control Circuit and Modern Industrialization's Analog Circuit convert into each other with shapeless recipes. If you have spares of one, you can use them in the other mod.[10]
Mekanism's Heavy Water can also be turned into Modern Industrialization's Heavy Water in the Modern Industrialization centrifuge.[10]

Radiation safety quest
The radiation quest "Radiation and You" quest asks for the full hazmat set, a Radioactive Waste Barrel and the MekaSuit radiation shielding module. It also asks for PneumaticCraft's Radiation Shielding Upgrade. This quest is one of the prerequisites for the fission reactor quest "Small Modded Reactor" quest.[5]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Mekanism?
4 parts
Mekanism has its own quest chapter in this pack, and its items also appear in the logistics, power, modern_industrialization and resources_and_you chapters. None of these quests have titles, so here's what each one asks for and how they unlock.[5][6][8][12][13]
The Mekanism chapter: getting started
The chapter opens with a few quests you can take on right away: a Heat Generator in "Generating Power" quest, a Basic Fluid Tank in "Basic Fluid Tank" quest, a Basic Chemical Tank in "Basic Chemical Tank" quest, and a radiation safety quest, "Radiation and You" quest. That one asks for the full hazmat set, a Radioactive Waste Barrel, a Module Radiation Shielding Unit and a PneumaticCraft radiation shielding upgrade.[5]
The Heat Generator quest leads to the Metallurgic Infuser in "The Metallurgic Infuser" quest. From there the chapter splits in two. "Redstone Infusion" quest asks for Infused Alloy, a Basic Control Circuit and an Advanced Control Circuit. "Carbon Infusion" quest asks for Enriched Iron and a steel ingot.[5]
- After the circuit quest you can go for a Basic Bin in "Stores A Lot of 1 Item Type" quest, or an Energy Tablet plus any Energy Cube in "Storing Energy" quest. The Energy Cube quest then opens Free Runners in "Gotta Go Fast" quest, the Chargepad in "Charging Up" quest, and a Wind, Solar or Advanced Solar Generator in a quest in "Mekanism".[5]
- After the steel quest you get the basic transport pieces: a quest in "Mekanism", "Basic Logistical Transporter" quest, "Basic Pressurized Tube" quest and "Basic Universal Cable" quest. You also get the Configurator in "Configurator" quest and the Steel Casing in "Machine Casings" quest.[5]
Steel Casing: the big hub
The Steel Casing quest unlocks most of the machines at once. You get the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Purification Chamber, Energized Smelter, Chemical Oxidizer (with sulfur dust), Electrolytic Separator, Rotary Condensentrator and a Thermal Evaporation Plant in "Thermal Evaporation Towers" quest. It also opens the upgrade quests, any Tier Installer, the Configuration Card, Gauge Dropper and Cardboard Box. The Chemical Infuser quest, "The Chemical Infuser" quest, needs both Steel Casing and the Thermal Evaporation quest.[5]
- Thermal Evaporation leads to a Liquid Lithium Bucket in "Liquid Lithium" quest.[5]
- Crusher leads to Bio Fuel in "Bio Fuel" quest, which leads to the Bio-Generator in "Bio-Fuel Power" quest.[5]
- Enrichment Chamber leads to the Pressurized Reaction Chamber in "Pressurized Reaction Chamber" quest. Together with Bio Fuel, it unlocks Substrate in "Ethene" quest. Substrate leads to the Gas-Burning Generator and to HDPE in "HDPE" quest, and the HDPE quest leads to the Solar Neutron Activator.[5]
- Enrichment Chamber also leads to Enriched Diamond. That opens Reinforced Alloy (then the Elite Control Circuit in "Elite Control Circuit" quest) and the refined obsidian quest "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest, which unlocks the Osmium Compressor quest.[5]
- Reinforced Alloy plus refined obsidian unlock Atomic Alloy. Atomic Alloy plus the Elite circuit unlock the Ultimate Control Circuit in "Ultimate Control Circuit" quest. The Elite circuit plus the Chemical Infuser also unlock the Chemical Injection Chamber.[5]
Late game
The Ultimate circuit opens the Chemical Crystallizer, Chemical Washer, Chemical Dissolution Chamber and the Teleportation Core in "Teleportation Cores" quest. The Teleportation Core leads to the Quantum Entangloporter, the Teleporter set, the Digital Miner and QIO in "QIO Storage System" quest. QIO then branches into drives, the portable dashboard, and importers and exporters.[5]
The Fission Reactor quest, "Small Modded Reactor" quest, requires the hazmat quest, the Elite circuit and the Isotopic Centrifuge quest, among others. After it you can build the Industrial Turbine in "Industrial Turbines" quest, get the logic adapter, or make Plutonium and Polonium pellets in "You say Polonium, I say Plutonium" quest. The pellets quest is the gateway to the SPS, the Fusion Reactor, the Meka-Tool and MekaSuit in "Meka-Gear" quest, and Reprocessed Fissile Fragment. The Induction Matrix quest, "The Energized Induction Matrix" quest, sits behind a prerequisite from outside this list.[5]
Other chapters
- Logistics: the Configurator in "Mekanism" quest unlocks four quests where any tier of Universal Cable, Mechanical Pipe, Logistical Transporter or Pressurized Tube counts.[6]
- Power: separate quests for a Solar or Advanced Solar Generator, a Wind Generator and a Heat Generator.[8]
- Modern Industrialization: "We Cannot Resist This" quest accepts an Elite Control Circuit, and "We Are Resisting This" quest accepts an Ultimate Control Circuit, as alternatives to that mod's own circuits.[12]
- Resources and you: "Dirty Netherite Scrap" quest asks for Dirty Netherite Scrap.[13]
Which Mekanism config options matter?
5 parts
Good news before we dig in: for every numeric Mekanism option shown here, the pack uses the mod's default value. Energy capacities, charge rates and ranges all behave the way standard Mekanism documentation describes. The settings below are the ones most likely to change how your playthrough feels, whether you're reading a GUI, swinging a tool or wondering why something isn't spawning.[14][15][16]
Display units and quality of life
- energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs show FE instead of Joules. It also controls network reader readings on the server. You can switch it to JOULES if you're following older Mekanism tutorials.[17]
- temperatureUnit is set to KELVIN. CELSIUS, RANKINE, FAHRENHEIT and AMBIENT are also allowed.[17]
- copyBlockData is on. Middle-clicking a machine copies its configuration data, which saves you time when you place lots of identical machines.[17]
- accessibility.allowModeScroll is on. You can hold sneak and use the scroll wheel to change the mode of held items.[15]
Atomic Disassembler
The big one here: atomic_disassembler.veinMining is turned off in this pack. That means the Vein Mining mode isn't available, and atomic_disassembler.miningCount (128 blocks) does nothing, because it requires vein mining to be enabled. The Fast and Slow modes are both enabled.[16]
The Disassembler holds 1,000,000 joules and accepts 5,000 per tick. As a weapon, each hit costs 2,000 joules and adds 20 half hearts of bonus damage. When it's out of power, the bonus drops to 4 half hearts.[16]
MekaSuit and other gear
- MekaSuit pieces start at 16,000,000 joules of capacity and charge at 100,000 joules per tick. Both values scale quadratically with upgrades.[16]
- The MekaSuit's fall, magic and unspecified damage reduction ratios are all set to 1. With enough power, it can absorb all of that damage.[16]
- Free Runners also have a fall damage reduction ratio of 1. Each half heart of fall damage they block costs 50 joules.[16]
- The Jetpack holds 24,000 mB of hydrogen and fills at 16 mB/t.[16]
Performance and HUD (client side)
- If cables and pipes tank your FPS, turn on accessibility.opaqueTransmitters. Transmitters then render their sides instead of their contents.[15]
- rendering.berRange is 256. Lowering it will likely improve performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in.[15]
- You can switch off machine particles, sounds and radiation particles separately with the rendering.particle and sounds options.[15]
- The QIO Dashboard shows 8 slots wide by 4 slots tall. You can raise that to up to 16 wide and 48 tall with qio.slotsWide and qio.slotsTall.[15]
Baby mobs, Obsidian TNT and walkie talkies
In this pack, Baby Skeletons, Baby Strays and Baby Bogged can spawn. Baby Creepers, Baby Endermen and Baby Wither Skeletons are disabled. Arrows shot by baby mobs deal 0.25 times normal damage.[14]
Obsidian TNT has a blast radius of 12, compared with 4 for vanilla TNT. Its fuse is 100 ticks, compared with 80 ticks for vanilla.[14]
voice_server.enabled is off, so Walkie Talkie voice chat won't work unless whoever runs your server enables it.[14]
What changed in Mekanism between versions?
In FTB Skies 2 1.22.0, all three parts of the Mekanism family run on the same version: Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools are each on 10.7.19, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 (build 10.7.19.85). Because they share a version, the core mod and its add-ons stay in sync, so you don't need to worry about mismatched jars if you're poking around the pack files.[2]
All three mods were first added in FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 or an earlier release. The pack's mod list doesn't say which earlier release introduced them, so this guide can't give you an exact starting point.[2]
Unverified No pack changelog entries or mod changelogs for these versions were available, so this guide can't list specific changes, balance tweaks or new features across the pack's releases. Check the pack's release notes in your launcher if you want to see what changed between updates.
