What is FTB Materials?
1 part
FTB Materials supplies metal, gem and dust items under the ftbmaterials namespace, including chunks, dusts, ingots, plates, rods, wire and gems. The pack ships version 21.1.2 of the NeoForge build.[1][2][3]
Think of it as a supply mod rather than a tech tree of its own. The quest chapters for other mods keep asking you to hand in its items, so you'll meet it whichever tech path you pick.[2][3][4][5][6]
Where you meet it in the quest book
- Resources and You: early quests ask for Copper Chunk, Tin Chunk, Lead Chunk, Gold Chunk, Diamond Chunk, Emerald Chunk and Redstone Chunk, plus Sulfur Dust, Niter Dust and Bauxite Dust.[3]
- Modern Industrialization: the chapter starts with Copper Rod, Iron Plate and Copper Plate, then moves on to Bronze Ingot, Steel Ingot, Aluminum Ingot and Stainless Steel Ingot. Later quests ask for Tungsten Ingot, Titanium Ingot, Platinum Ingot, Raw Iridium and Plutonium Dust.[2]
- Create: one quest asks for an iron, copper or gold plate alongside the mechanical press, and later ones ask for Brass Ingot, Brass Plate and Obsidian Plate.[5]
- Mekanism: quests ask for Osmium Ingot, Uranium Ingot, Fluorite Gem, Refined Obsidian Ingot, Refined Glowstone Ingot and Lithium Dust.[4]
- Immersive Engineering: you'll see Iron Plate, Copper Wire, Steel Ingot and Coal Coke Dust in that chapter.[6]
- Irons, Gems and Jewelery: this chapter asks for 64 each of Silver Ingot and Lead Ingot, plus Bronze Ingot, Brass Ingot, Platinum Ingot, Sapphire Gem and Ruby Gem.[7]
How do you get started with FTB Materials?
6 parts
The pack's quest book asks for FTB Materials items across many chapters, including the Create, Immersive Engineering, Modern Industrialization, Mekanism and AE2 chapters. This page walks through the items those quests ask for early, with the in-pack recipe for each.[2][4][5][6][8]
Press your first plates
Start with Iron Plate, Copper Plate and Gold Plate. The pack adds a Create pressing recipe for each one. The Create chapter asks you to hand in one of the three plates together with the mechanical press, and plates also appear in the Modern Industrialization chapter, so it pays to make a few early.[2][5][9]
Pressing (create)
- any copper ingot
Recipe id: ftb:create/pressing/plate/copper
Quest a quest in "?" in the Create chapter is the one that checks this step.[5]
Copper wire
Once you have copper plates, a Create cutting recipe that the pack adds turns a plate into Copper Wire. The Immersive Engineering chapter asks for copper wire alongside an iron plate and a wirecutter.[6][9]
Cutting (create)
- any copper plate
Recipe id: ftb:create/cutting/wire/copper
Zinc, then brass
The pack adds both a smelting recipe and a blasting recipe that turn crushed zinc into Zinc Ingot. The opening chapter has a quest for it, a quest in "?". The pack uses the same pattern for lead, nickel, silver, aluminum, osmium, platinum and uranium ingots.[9][10]
Zinc matters because it leads to Brass Ingot. The pack changes Create's mixing recipe for brass, so follow this one.[9]
Mixing (create)
- any copper ingot
- any zinc ingot
Recipe id: create:mixing/brass_ingot
The Create chapter then asks for a brass ingot and, after that, a Brass Plate. The plate is pressed from a brass ingot, just like the other plates.[5][9]
Pressing (create)
- any brass ingots
Recipe id: ftb:create/pressing/plate/brass
- Brass ingot quest: a quest in "?"[5]
- Brass plate quest: a quest in "?"[5]
Bronze
Bronze Ingot has a quest in the Modern Industrialization chapter, a quest in "?", which comes right after the quest asking for copper rods, plates and other parts. The jewelry chapter asks for it too. The pack adds an alloy smelter recipe that makes it from ingots, and a separate one that makes it from dusts.[2][7][9]
Alloy Smelter (extended_industrialization)
- 3× any copper ingot
- any tin ingot
Recipe id: ftb:bronze_ingot_from_ingots
Coal coke
The Modern Industrialization chapter wants both Coal Coke Gem and Coal Coke Dust in quest a quest in "?". The pack adds a Mekanism crushing recipe that turns the gem into dust, and a crafting recipe that unpacks a Block of Coal Coke into gems.[2][9]
Steel comes up a lot
Steel Ingot is requested in the Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism and MFFS chapters. Plan to need it once those chapters open up.[2][4][6][11]
How does FTB Materials work?
5 parts
The recipe data for FTB Materials in this pack shows its items being made and converted in the regular crafting grid. This section walks through those conversions: compressing, small pieces, metal ladders, steel plates, silicon and raw ores.[9]
Compressing and decompressing
The pack adds compress and decompress crafting recipes for a handful of materials. The pieces involved are Ruby Gem, Fluorite Gem, Coal Coke Gem and Monazite Dust, and their storage blocks are Block of Ruby, Block of Fluorite, Block of Coal Coke and Block of Monazite. Vanilla charcoal also has a block, Block of Charcoal. The recipes below show the exact in-pack versions.[9]
Compressing Ruby Gems into a block, a recipe added by the pack.
Breaking the block back into gems, also added by the pack.

Recipe id: ftb:compress/coal_coke_gem
The same compress pattern for Coal Coke, added by the pack.
The same decompress idea gives you small pieces from vanilla materials. Coal turns into Tiny Coal, charcoal into Tiny Charcoal, a copper ingot into a Copper Nugget, and a netherite ingot into a Netherite Nugget. All of these recipes were added by the pack.[9]
Coal into Tiny Coal, added by the pack.
Aluminum and antimony chains
Aluminum and antimony follow the usual metal ladder: nuggets, ingots, blocks, and dust with tiny dust. The pack changed these recipes so they take any item from the matching shared tag rather than one specific item. For example, the aluminum ingot recipe accepts any item tagged as an aluminum nugget, and the block recipe accepts any aluminum ingot.[9]
Crafting Shaped
9 × any aluminum nugget
Recipe id: ftbmaterials:aluminum_ingot
Pack-changed recipe that accepts any item in the aluminum nugget tag.
Aluminum has a few more conversions in the recipe data: Raw Aluminum and Block of Raw Aluminum, Aluminum Dust and Tiny Aluminum Dust, and Aluminum Chunk with Aluminum Cluster. The cluster recipe is an unmodified mod recipe. The block-to-ingot recipes for aluminum and antimony were changed by the pack.[9]
An unmodified mod recipe.
Steel plates
Steel Plate is a hammer recipe in this pack, and the pack added it. The tool is the Engineer's Hammer (Engineer's Hammer), and the material is Steel Ingot. The recipe below shows exactly how they are used.[9]
A shapeless crafting recipe added by the pack.
Silicon
Silicon can be crafted in this pack in more than one way. One recipe added by the pack turns Mystical Agriculture's silicon essence into it. The other is a changed Extended AE recipe that turns a block of silicon back into it.[9]
Crafting Shaped

Raw ores from Mystical Agriculture essences
The pack lets you craft raw ores straight from Mystical Agriculture essences. There are recipes for Raw Lead, Raw Nickel, Raw Platinum, Raw Silver and Raw Uranium. Their recipe ids say "ingot", but the output in the data is the raw ore.[9]
Crafting Shaped

Nickel follows the same pattern, added by the pack.
How do you progress through FTB Materials?
5 parts
In this pack, FTB Materials progression is driven by the quest book. Quests across many chapters ask for the mod's items, and the pack adds a large batch of its own recipes for making them. Follow the quests and you get the route below.[2][3][7][9]
Stage 1: raw chunks and dusts
The "resources_and_you" chapter is the natural start. Its quests ask for Copper Chunk, Tin Chunk, Lead Chunk, Gold Chunk, Diamond Chunk, Emerald Chunk and Redstone Chunk. It also wants Bauxite Dust, Niter Dust and Sulfur Dust.[3]
Stage 2: plates, rods and wire
The Create chapter has a quest that accepts an Iron Plate, Copper Plate or Gold Plate together with a mechanical press. The pack adds Create pressing recipes that turn ingots into these plates.[5][9]
Copper, gold and brass plates have their own pack-added pressing recipes.
Copper Wire is cut from a copper plate with a pack-added Create cutting recipe. The Immersive Engineering chapter then asks for a wirecutter, an iron plate and copper wire. Rods have their own quests: Iron Rod in the gearing_up chapter, and Copper Rod in the Modern Industrialization chapter.[2][6][9][12]
Stage 3: alloys, coke and steel
In the Modern Industrialization chapter, the Bronze Ingot quest a quest in "?" comes right after the quest asking for copper rods, iron plates and a copper plate a quest in "?". The "irons_gems_and_jewelery" chapter asks for bronze too. The pack adds alloy smelter recipes for it, and bronze dust can be smelted or blasted into an ingot.[2][7][9]
Alloy Smelter (extended_industrialization)
- 3× any copper ingot
- any tin ingot
Recipe id: ftb:bronze_ingot_from_ingots
Pack-added alloy smelter recipe using copper and tin ingots.
Brass Ingot is asked for in the Create chapter, right after the plate quest, and again in "irons_gems_and_jewelery". A further Create quest wants the Brass Plate. The pack changed the Create mixing recipe for brass, so don't rely on the base mod's version.[5][7][9]
Mixing (create)
- any copper ingot
- any zinc ingot
Recipe id: create:mixing/brass_ingot
Changed by the pack.
For fuel, the Modern Industrialization and Immersive Engineering chapters both ask for Coal Coke Dust, and the Modern Industrialization quest also wants Coal Coke Gem. The pack lets you smelt or blast coke dust into the gem.[2][6][9]
Steel Ingot is the big crossover item. It is requested in the Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Mekanism and MFFS chapters. In this pack, Steel Dust can be blasted into an ingot.[2][4][6][9][11]
Added by the pack.
Stage 4: ingots, gems and silicon
The pack adds smelting and blasting recipes for Aluminum Ingot, Lead Ingot, Nickel Ingot, Osmium Ingot, Platinum Ingot, Silver Ingot, Uranium Ingot and Zinc Ingot. Quests for several of them sit in different chapters: Zinc Ingot in the_beginning, Nickel Ingot in oritech, Osmium Ingot in Mekanism and Aluminum Ingot in Modern Industrialization.[2][4][9][10][13]
Silver has a second route: the pack changed an Ars Nouveau imbuement recipe that turns a gold ingot, with essences and a spirit attuned gem, into a silver ingot. The Occultism chapter also asks for silver.[9][14]
The "irons_gems_and_jewelery" chapter is the grindy one. It wants 64 Silver Ingot and 64 Lead Ingot, plus a single Platinum Ingot. Gem quests cover Sapphire Gem and Ruby Gem. Ruby dust can be smelted or blasted into a gem, and sapphire dust can be blasted into one.[7][9]
The AE2 chapter has a quest for Silicon alongside printed silicon. The pack changed several silicon recipes, including the AE2 smelting and blasting of certus quartz dust.[8][9]
Stage 5: late-game metals
The Modern Industrialization chapter carries a chain for stainless steel: Chromium Dust a quest in "?", then Stainless Steel Dust a quest in "?", then Stainless Steel Ingot a quest in "?". The pack adds Actually Additions crushing recipes that turn chromium and stainless steel plates into those dusts.[2][9]
Three more quests in that chapter share one parent quest and ask for Tungsten Ingot, Raw Platinum and Titanium Ingot. Further on it asks for Tiny Iridium Dust, with the Platinum Ingot quest a quest in "?" coming after it. It also has quests for Raw Iridium and Plutonium Dust.[2]
The pack added a Create washing recipe that turns iridium clumps into Iridium Dust and tiny iridium dust.[9]
Splashing (create)
- any iridium clump
Recipe id: ftb:create/washing/clumps/iridium
Added by the pack.
The Mekanism chapter has its own branch. One quest asks for Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust, and the next asks for Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot. Another quest wants Sulfur Dust, Fluorite Gem and uranium, and a separate one asks for Lithium Dust.[4]
In Create, the Obsidian Plate quest uses a sequenced assembly recipe that the pack changed.[5][9]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
4× Unprocessed Obsidian Sheet
500× Lava
- any obsidian dust
Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/sturdy_sheet
Changed by the pack.
How does FTB Materials work with other mods?
5 parts
FTB Materials items turn up in a lot of other mods' recipes and quests in this pack. Here are the links that the pack's recipes and quest book confirm.[9]
Create
The pack changed several Create processing recipes so they give out FTB Materials nuggets. Crushing Asurine gives Crushed Raw Zinc and a Zinc Nugget. Crushing Veridium gives Crushed Raw Copper and a Copper Nugget.[9]
Washing was changed too. Crushed Raw Copper splashes into a Copper Nugget and a clay ball, and Crushed Raw Zinc splashes into a Zinc Nugget and gunpowder. Crushed Raw Uranium splashes into a Uranium Nugget.[9]
Create also crushes Immersive Engineering's Coal Coke, and its coke block, into Coal Coke Dust. The pack changed the sturdy sheet assembly as well: it uses obsidian dust and gives you an Obsidian Plate. The Precision Mechanism assembly is also pack-modified and involves a Gold Plate.[9]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
Cogwheel
4× Incomplete Precision Mechanism
Large Cogwheel
- any iron nugget
- any gold plate
Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/precision_mechanism
Pack-modified Precision Mechanism assembly.
The Create quest chapter follows the same idea. One quest asks for an iron, copper or gold plate alongside a mechanical press, and later quests ask for a Brass Ingot and a Brass Plate. Another asks for the obsidian plate.[5]
Mekanism
The pack adds Mekanism-style ore processing chains for FTB Materials metals. The chains in the recipes here cover aluminum, antimony, copper, gold, iridium and iron.[9]
- Purifying with Liquid Oxygen turns an ore, raw material, shard or raw storage block of the metal into a clump, for example Aluminum Clump.[9]
- Crystallizing the clean version of the metal makes the crystal, for example Aluminum Crystal.[9]
- Injecting with Liquid Hydrogen Chloride turns an ore, raw material, raw storage block or crystal into a shard, for example Aluminum Shard.[9]
Mekanism's Fluorite Ore and FTB Materials' Fluorite Ore are linked by a stonecutting recipe the pack added, shown below. On the quest side, the Mekanism chapter asks for items like Osmium Ingot, Sulfur Dust, Fluorite Gem, Uranium Ingot, Refined Obsidian Ingot and Lithium Dust.[4][9]
Stonecutting recipe added by the pack.
Applied Energistics and ExtendedAE
The pack changed how Silicon is obtained from ExtendedAE's Quartz Blend and Block of Silicon. The smelting version is shown below. The AE2 quest chapter has a quest asking for that Silicon alongside printed silicon.[8][9]
Changed by the pack.
The pack also added AE2 transform recipes that use FTB Materials items. One turns Iron Block into a Block of Aluminum, using Cognitive Flux and molten ender. Another uses Primordial Assembly, Obsidian Dust, a Block of Silver and molten ender to make Budding Osmium GeOre.[9]
Quartz Dust is the base for the Xychorium gem transforms (blue, dark, green, light and red). Each one combines the dust with a matching dye and molten kivi.[9]
Geore and Modern Industrialization
Geore shards can be smelted or blasted into FTB Materials items: Ruby GeOre Shard gives Ruby Gem, Sapphire GeOre Shard gives Sapphire Gem, and Tungsten GeOre Shard gives Tungsten Ingot. Monazite shards give Monazite Dust and coal shards give Tiny Coal.[9]
Modern Industrialization has two pack recipes tied to FTB Materials. The mixer recipe below, added by the pack, makes Budding Monazite GeOre and is where Void Crystal Catalyst, Diamond Dust and Helium come in. A macerator recipe, changed by the pack, covers Silver Curved Plate and Silver Dust.[9]
Mixer (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:budding_monazite_from_dusts
Mixer recipe added by the pack.
The Modern Industrialization quest chapter asks for FTB Materials items such as the Bronze Ingot, Steel Ingot, Aluminum Ingot, Stainless Steel Ingot and Titanium Ingot. Some of these quests also ask for Modern Industrialization parts, like the steel machine casing.[2]
Magic mods and extras
Silver crosses over into magic mods. The Ars Nouveau imbuement recipe below, changed by the pack, makes a Silver Ingot and is where Manipulation Essence, Demon's Dream Essence and Spirit Attuned Gem come in. A Malum recipe added by the pack links a Block of Silver with the Iesnium Ingot. The Occultism quest chapter also asks for silver ingots.[9][14]
Imbuement recipe changed by the pack.
The pack's Explorer's Compass recipe is built around FTB Materials parts such as the Diamond Gear and Netherite Nugget, shown below.[9]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use FTB Materials?
4 parts
FTB Materials has no quest chapter of its own in the pack. Its metals, dusts, plates and gems show up as tasks in other chapters, and most of those quests just ask you to hand in the item. The quests have no titles in the pack data, so I refer to them by their IDs.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][10][11][12][13][14]
Modern Industrialization
This chapter has the most FTB Materials items, and it reads like a metal progression. It opens with a quest in "?", which wants two Copper Rod, a Copper Bolt, two Iron Plate, a Copper Plate and two Copper Curved Plate. After that, a quest in "?" asks for a Bronze Ingot.[2]
