What is Forbidden and Arcanus ?

1 part

Forbidden and Arcanus adds magical content in a style that feels like it could fit right into vanilla Minecraft. It also adds a big batch of new building blocks, so it's just as useful for builders as it is for magic fans.[1]

This pack includes version 2.5.11 of the mod, and that's the version this guide covers.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's quests start you off with an Arcane Crystal. Follow-up quests then ask for items like Mundabitur Dust, the Smelter Prism and the Eternal Stella.[3][4]

In the Allthemodium questline, a quest in "?" asks you for a Hephaestus Forge Tier 1, which leads into a quest in "?" for the Eternal Stella.[5]

The mod's darkstone blocks matter a lot here. Several quests have you gather full block sets together with a modular_machinery_reborn:controller, including Polished Darkstone, Rune Block, Arcane Crystal Block and a Quantum Injector.[3][4]

One of these quests, a quest in "?", also wants a Hephaestus Forge Tier 5. Completing it opens up quests for the Terrastomp Prism, Whirlwind Prism, Sea Prism, Smelter Prism and Soul Binding Crystal.[3]

Tip: Start stockpiling Polished Darkstone early. a quest in "?" alone asks for 87 Polished Darkstone and 88 Polished Darkstone Stairs, on top of slabs and walls.[3]

How do you get started with Forbidden and Arcanus ?

4 parts

Forbidden and Arcanus is a magic mod that fits right into a vanilla look, and it adds a huge set of building blocks. In this pack its blocks aren't just decoration. They show up again and again in the multiblock structures of the star questline, built around a modular_machinery_reborn:controller. Getting comfortable with this mod early saves you a lot of grinding later.[1][3][4]

Step 1: Get some Arcane Crystal

Your first target is Arcane Crystal. Both star chapters open with a quest for it: a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". You get it by smelting arcane crystal ore in a regular furnace or a blast furnace.[3][4][6]

Blast furnace version

Tip: The pack adds extra ways to get Arcane Crystal. You can process the ore in an Ender IO alloy smelter, or make crystals through Theurgy incubation. Productive Bees can also give you Arcane Crystal from a honeycomb in the centrifuge.[6]

Pack your crystals into Arcane Crystal Block for storage. Star quests ask for these blocks directly, for example 5 in a quest in "?" and 4 in a quest in "?".[3][6]

Step 2: Arcane Crystal Dust and Mundabitur Dust

Right after the Arcane Crystal quest, a quest in "?" asks for Mundabitur Dust. To make it you'll need Arcane Crystal Dust, which you craft from Arcane Crystal Dust Speck.[3][6]

Watch out: The pack changed the Mundabitur Dust recipe. Always check the in-game recipe instead of an older guide or video.[6]

Step 3: Start stockpiling Polished Darkstone

Polished Darkstone is made from Darkstone. You can then turn it into stairs, slabs and walls. Start a stockpile early, because the star multiblocks eat a lot of it. For example, a quest in "?" alone wants 87 Polished Darkstone and 88 Polished Darkstone Stairs.[3][6]

Step 4: The Hephaestus Forge

The Allthemodium chapter has a quest for the Hephaestus Forge Tier 1, a quest in "?". It's followed by a quest for Eternal Stella, a quest in "?". Later on, the star quest a quest in "?" expects a Hephaestus Forge Tier 5, so the forge is something you'll keep upgrading.[3][5]

Tip: Eternal Stella is also a Productive Bees product: the Stellarite Bee makes it in an advanced beehive.[6]

Unverified Where Arcane Crystal ore and Darkstone generate, how to get Deorum Ingots and Runes, and how to build and upgrade the Hephaestus Forge are not covered by the available sources.

How does Forbidden and Arcanus work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Forbidden and Arcanus adds magical content in a style that fits vanilla, plus a lot of new building blocks. This section covers the crafting chains that can be confirmed for this pack. Every recipe shown here is the mod's own recipe as it's loaded in the pack.[1][7]

Arcane Crystal processing

Arcane Crystal and its dust show up in lots of the mod's recipes, so this is the chain you'll run most often. It covers Arcane Crystal Dust Speck, Arcane Crystal Dust, Arcane Crystal and the Arcane Crystal Block, and the pack's recipes below show each step, including packing crystals into a block and unpacking them again.[7]

Deorum upgrades

The Deorum Ingot is what turns ordinary building materials into their arcane versions. Polished Darkstone has an arcane counterpart, Arcane Polished Darkstone, and the pack loads the usual shaped variants on top of it: the Arcane Polished Darkstone Pillar, Arcane Polished Darkstone Slab, Arcane Polished Darkstone Stairs and Arcane Polished Darkstone Wall.[7]

Smithing templates and dragon items

You craft the Smithing Template from Darkstone and a vanilla netherite upgrade smithing template. That means you'll need a netherite template before you can make one.[7]

The Hephaestus Forge

The mod adds a JEI category called Hephaestus Forge Upgrading. It also has an item called the Reinforced Deorum Blacksmith Gavel. Open that JEI category in-game to see how the forge's upgrades work in this pack.[8]

Tip: The mod's project page links a tutorial video that covers most things in the mod. It's worth watching if you want an overview beyond these recipes.[1]

How do you progress through Forbidden and Arcanus ?

5 parts

In this pack, Forbidden and Arcanus progression is laid out through quests rather than a guidebook. It runs roughly like this: get Arcane Crystal, turn it into dusts and Deorum, mass-produce Darkstone building blocks, then feed all of that into some big builds involving the Hephaestus Forge and the Quantum Injector. Let's go through it step by step.[3][4][5][6]

Step 1: Arcane Crystal

Everything starts with Arcane Crystal. Quests a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" simply ask you to get one, and several later quests unlock from them. You can smelt or blast Arcane Crystal ore in vanilla furnaces, or process it in the mod's own Clibano combustion.[3][4][6]

Tip: The pack adds extra ways to get Arcane Crystal. There's an Ender IO alloy smelting recipe for the ore and a Theurgy incubation recipe. There's also a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that outputs Arcane Crystal, which is handy if you want an ore-free supply later on.[6]

Step 2: Dusts and Deorum

Once you have Arcane Crystal, quest a quest in "?" unlocks and asks for Mundabitur Dust. Heads up: the pack changed the Mundabitur Dust recipe, so don't trust older videos or wikis here. Use the in-pack recipe below, and craft Arcane Crystal Dust first.[3][6]

Next up is Deorum Ingot, the mod's golden metal. The pack changed this recipe too, so check the version shown here. Deorum is worth stockpiling, because the fancier Darkstone blocks in the next step build on it.[6]

Step 3: Darkstone building blocks

The big quests want a lot of Darkstone blocks: Polished Darkstone and its stairs and slabs, Arcane Polished Darkstone, pillars, Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone, Darkstone Pedestal and Rune Block. Here are the key recipes in the order you'll need them.[3][4][6]

The big build quests

Several quests ask for a modular_machinery_reborn:controller together with a big pile of Forbidden and Arcanus blocks. Plan ahead, because the quantities add up fast.[3][4]

Hephaestus Forge and the late rewards

Quest a quest in "?" asks for Hephaestus Forge Tier 1, and after it comes a quest in "?" for Eternal Stella. Another Eternal Stella quest, a quest in "?", unlocks after your first Arcane Crystal. If you'd rather farm Eternal Stella, Productive Bees has a Stellarite bee that produces it.[4][5][6]

The tier 5 Forge build in a quest in "?" is what opens up the top-end items. Its follow-up quests ask for Terrastomp Prism, Whirlwind Prism, Sea Prism, Smelter Prism and Soul Binding Crystal. A separate Smelter Prism quest, a quest in "?", branches off the early Arcane Crystal quest.[3][4]

Unverified The available sources don't cover how to upgrade the Hephaestus Forge between tiers, what each tier unlocks, or how the prisms and Soul Binding Crystal are made in this pack. Check JEI in-game for those recipes. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Forbidden and Arcanus work with other mods?

4 parts

Forbidden and Arcanus is a magic mod that also adds a lot of building blocks. In this pack it ties into other mods through endgame crafting components, large quest checklists built around a Modular Machinery Reborn controller, extra sawing recipes for its woods, and Bibliocraft furniture made from its slabs.[1][3][6]

Endgame crafting components

The pack adds its own recipe for Oblivion Shard, and one of its ingredients is Eternal Stella. The rest of that recipe comes from several other mods, including Twilight Forest boss trophies like the Hydra Trophy. If you're pushing for the endgame, you'll need an Eternal Stella.[6]

Pack-added recipe

Philosopher's Fuel also has a pack-added recipe, and this one needs a Smelter Prism. The other ingredients come from a whole range of tech and magic mods.[6]

Pack-added recipe

The quests point you toward both items. In the Allthemodium chapter, a quest in "?" asks for a Hephaestus Forge Tier 1, and a quest in "?" follows it with the Eternal Stella.[5]

In the star chapter, a quest in "?" asks for an Arcane Crystal. It leads to a quest in "?" for the Smelter Prism and a quest in "?" for the Eternal Stella.[4]

Quests with Modular Machinery Reborn

Several star quests ask you to gather a Modular Machinery Reborn controller together with a big pile of Forbidden and Arcanus blocks.[3][4]

Tip: Polished Darkstone shows up in large amounts across these quests, from 68 in one to 87 in another and whole stacks of 64 in a third. Start stockpiling it early so it doesn't slow you down.[3][4]

Unverified These controller-and-casing quests look like material lists for custom machines, but the sources don't say what those machines do or how they're built.

Sawing Forbidden and Arcanus wood

The pack adds sawing recipes for Aurum Planks, Edelwood Planks and Fungyss Planks in both Mekanism's sawing machine and Productive Trees' sawmill. The Mekanism versions also give you Sawdust alongside the planks.[6]

If you love decorating, Bibliocraft furniture comes in Forbidden and Arcanus woods. You can make display cases, seats and several styles of seat back from Aurum, Edelwood and Fungyss slabs, in wool colours such as black, blue and brown, for example the Black Edelwood Display Case or the Blue Aurum Seat.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Forbidden and Arcanus ?

3 parts

Forbidden and Arcanus shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. None of these quests have titles, so the useful part is what each one asks you to hand in and which quests unlock which. Here's the breakdown, chapter by chapter.[3][4][5]

The allthemodium chapter

This is the shortest chain. You make the mod's forge first, and then its signature crafting result.[5]

  1. a quest in "?" asks for a Hephaestus Forge Tier 1.[5]
  2. a quest in "?" unlocks after that and asks for an Eternal Stella.[5]

The Star chapter

This chapter starts simple with a quest in "?", which just wants an Arcane Crystal. Completing it opens two quests: a quest in "?" for a Smelter Prism and a quest in "?" for an Eternal Stella.[4]

The big one here is a quest in "?". It asks for a controller from Modular Machinery Reborn plus a huge pile of Forbidden and Arcanus blocks. The list includes 8 Arcane Polished Darkstone, 4 Chiseled Arcane Polished Darkstone, 8 Darkstone Pedestal, 8 Arcane Crystal Obelisk, 4 Arcane Crystal Block and 16 Rune Block. It also wants a Quantum Injector, a Magnetized Darkstone Pedestal, 48 Polished Darkstone Stairs and several separate tasks of 64 Polished Darkstone each.[4]

Tip: That quest has several separate tasks of 64 Polished Darkstone, plus one more for 2. Start mass-producing it early so you're not stuck waiting on building blocks.[4]

The second star-themed chapter

A second chapter, whose file name also refers to the star, uses the mod much more heavily. It has two small chains, a set of big collection quests, and a group of prism rewards.[3]

Five quests each need both a quest in "?" and one other quest in the chapter to be done first. a quest in "?" wants a Terrastomp Prism and a quest in "?" wants a Whirlwind Prism. a quest in "?" wants a Sea Prism and a quest in "?" wants a Soul Binding Crystal. a quest in "?" wants a Smelter Prism.[3]

Unverified The quest files don't say what the other prerequisite for those five quests contains, or what order the three chapters are meant to be played in.

Which Forbidden and Arcanus config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Unverified We couldn't confirm any config options or values for Forbidden and Arcanus in All the Mods 10 8.1. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so we can't tell you which settings exist, what they're set to, or whether the pack changed anything from the mod's defaults.

If you're trying to change how the mod behaves or you run into a problem, the mod's project page points you to its Discord server for news, feature suggestions and support.[1]

What changed in Forbidden and Arcanus between versions?

4 parts

All the Mods 10 2.15 ships Forbidden and Arcanus 2.5.11, and the mod has been in the pack since version 0.56 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

Unverified No changelog for 2.5.11 was available, so what changed in the version this pack ships is unconfirmed.

2.5.10

  • Unused config options were removed.[9]
  • The Artisan Relic is easier to find in village loot chests: the chance went from 18% to 28%.[9]
  • The Hephaestus Forge data cache was changed, which might fix the Hephaestus Forge server issues.[9]
  • Polished Darkstone Wall now has its missing pickaxe mineable tag.[9]

2.5.9

  • The Aureal Meter overlay now shows when you hold an Aureal Bottle or a Quantum Catcher.[10]
  • The Spectral Eye Amulet was fixed, and Aurum Leaves got their missing preferred tool.[10]
  • Lens of Veritatis, Sanity Meter, the Nipa block and the Nipa structure were removed.[10]
  • Tags now use the "c" namespace, and many missing block and item tags were added.[10]

2.5.8-beta

  • The three Lost Soul variants became separate entities: forbidden_arcanus:lost_soul (normal), forbidden_arcanus:corrupt_lost_soul and forbidden_arcanus:enchanted_lost_soul.[11]
  • Lost Souls now always drop a Soul item, however they were killed.[11]
  • The Soulbound item modifier is now limited to armor and tool items.[11]
  • Fixed a crash when using a Corrupt Arcane Crystal Obelisk in a Hephaestus Forge setup, and higher forge tiers now have the pickaxe mineable tag.[11]
  • The Edelwood Oil to Black Dye recipe no longer overwrites the vanilla Ink Sac to Black Dye recipe.[11]
  • The Reinforced Deorum Blacksmith Gavel is now hidden from the creative tab, and the Blacksmith Gavel tooltip was fixed.[11]
  • The forbidden_arcanus:upgrade_tier ritual result type now requires a result_tier field.[11]

2.5.6-beta and earlier

  • 2.5.6-beta: fixed loot modifiers not working, added the test_tube_blacklisted.json entity tag, and made Clibano recipes accept an item stack as the result.[12]
  • 2.5.5-beta: Lost Souls no longer have a chance to spawn when you kill an entity. The new Soul Looting enchantment gives 5% per level to spawn one instead.[13]
  • 2.5.5-beta: Lost Souls can now be damaged by normal swords, and the Hephaestus Forge main slot has a stack size limit of 1.[13]
  • 2.5.5-beta: fixed the inverted Edelwood Log smelting recipe and Enhancer Relics sometimes missing data, and added the missing Netherite Blacksmith Gavel recipe.[13]
  • 2.5.4-beta: some missing recipes were added back and the Hephaestus Forge tier tooltip translation was fixed.[14]
Watch out: Dark Nether Star Block (removed in 2.5.5-beta), Lens of Veritatis, Sanity Meter and the Nipa block and structure (removed in 2.5.9) are gone from the mod, so don't expect to find or craft them.[10][13]
