What is Modern Industrialization?

3 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod built around one big goal: total automation. At some point, any resource can and should be automated. It's a long road, and working out how to get there is the fun of it.[1][2]

All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Modern Industrialization 2.5.6, and the mod has been in the pack since 2.25 or earlier.[3]

Who it's for

If you like GregTech-style factories but hate the grind, this mod is for you. It's inspired by GregTech, but the developers removed the tedious parts. It doesn't nerf or change vanilla recipes, and you don't have to craft a pile of crafting tools. Instead, it has a single optional tool that gives you the best material conversion ratios without machines.[1]

The mod is very resource-hungry. In return, you get a powerful pipe system for automating early and a quarry that can replace mining entirely. An overclock system also lets machines and multiblocks reach 1 craft per tick if you give them enough upgrades and energy.[1]

How progression works

Progression has two parts. The Steam Age is the early game. You build your first factories there, and the challenge is managing resources and processing time. Most Steam Age setups become obsolete later, so don't over-invest in them. In the Electric Age, you should automate every processing line. Those setups are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them.[2]

Your very first step is the Forge Hammer, which handles basic processing before you even make bronze.[4]

This pack's quest chapters for the mod include Steam Age: New Beginnings, Electric Age: No more rookie, Digital Age and End Game. The "The Electric Age" quest quest calls the Electric Age the real beginning of your adventure.[5][6][7][8]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages pairing it with on-demand automation mods like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines only reach their full power when they run continuously, and on-demand crafting makes your progress slow and inefficient.[2]

The ATM Star path

In the ATM Star chapter, the "Modern Industrialization" quest quest asks you for a Forge Hammer. The quest says you don't need to reach the mod's last tier for the Star. It also says the mod is now entirely optional there, because you can use Create instead. If you do stay with it, the "Uranium Quad Fuel Rods" quest quest follows on from there.[9]

The Star itself is crafted in the Runic Star Altar, a 15x8x15 multiblock built through Modern Industrialization. Place the Altar block, then use a Wrench from this mod on it and follow the highlights to build the structure. After that, add Item Input, Item Output and Energy Input hatches. You'll also need stacks of upgrades to boost its FE/t. The "Runic Star Altar" quest quest walks you through every layer.[9]

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and your journey starts in the Steam Age. Here you build your first small factories to make the resources you need for the Electric Age. Most Steam Age setups become obsolete once you move on, so don't over-invest in them. Get what you need and keep going.[2]

Step 1: The Forge Hammer

Your very first build is the Forge Hammer, which handles basic processing steps. Put iron, copper or tin ore in it and you get 2 raw ores per ore, and every raw ore smelts into an ingot. That's already better than mining ore the normal way.[4]

Next, grab a Hammer. It raises that ratio in the Forge Hammer and unlocks more recipes, at the cost of some durability.[4]

Step 2: The Steam Mining Drill

The Forge Hammer wants ore blocks, not raw ores. The Steam Mining Drill solves that without a Silk Touch pickaxe. It mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch built in, so it pairs perfectly with the Forge Hammer.[4]

  1. Right-click a water source with the drill to fill it with water.[4]
  2. Load solid fuel such as coal by right-clicking the fuel onto the drill in your inventory.[4]
  3. Keep some fuel in it at all times. It burns slowly while you mine.[4]

Step 3: Your first Bronze

  1. Hammer copper and tin ingots in the Forge Hammer to get dusts, or hammer nuggets to get tiny dusts.[10]
  2. Combine copper and tin dusts (or tiny dusts) to get bronze dust (or bronze tiny dust).[10]
  3. Smelt bronze dust into a bronze ingot. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[10]
Tip: Making bronze dust in a Mixer is more efficient than doing it by hand, so a Bronze Mixer is a great early upgrade.[10][11]

Step 4: Coke and Steel

Steel production starts with a Coke Oven. Macerate coke into Coke Dust, then combine it with iron to get Uncooked Steel Dust. The Mixer gives you a better ratio here too.[11][12]

To turn that dust into steel, you need a Steam Blast Furnace. Craft its controller, 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches the Coke Oven uses. The structure matches the Coke Oven's, except the Bricks are swapped for Fire Clay Bricks and there is one extra hollow layer on top.[12]

Where this leads

Crafting an Analog Circuit starts the Electric Age. From there, a Steam Turbine converts your steam into electricity. Electric setups are meant to be permanent and upgradeable, so that's the point to start building for the long run.[2][11][13]

Watch out: The mod strongly discourages mixing it with on-demand automation mods like AE2 or Refined Storage. Its machines reach full power when they run continuously, and on-demand crafting makes progress very slow and inefficient.[2]

Unverified The exact in-pack recipes for the Forge Hammer, Hammer, Steam Mining Drill, Coke Oven and Steam Blast Furnace were not in the provided sources, and neither were the pack's early Steam Age quests. Check your recipe viewer and the quest book for the exact recipes and quest order in All the Mods 10. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Modern Industrialization work?

10 parts

Modern Industrialization is a mod about automation: at some point, every resource can and should be automated. You start in the Steam Age, where you build your first factories, and move into the Electric Age, where you're strongly encouraged to automate every processing line. Most steam setups become obsolete, but electric setups are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them.[2]

Energy units and steam

Everything runs on EU (Energy Units), and 1 millibucket of steam equals 1 EU. A boiler automatically sends steam to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines only process recipes up to 2 EU/t, so a boiler at max temperature can run 4 machines at once.[14]

Steel machines process recipes up to 4 EU/t and run them twice as fast, as long as the recipe stays within that limit. A steel boiler makes twice as much steam as a bronze one, up to 16 EU/t. To upgrade a bronze machine, apply a Steel Upgrade in a Crafting Table, or sneak and right-click the machine with it.[15]

How single-block machines handle items and fluids

  • Machines accept inputs from any side, whether that's items, steam or another fluid.[14]
  • Click the lock in the interface to lock a slot so it only accepts one type of item or fluid. You can also scroll on a slot to lower its maximum item count.[14]
  • Every machine has an output side, and you can turn on auto-eject in the interface. Hoppers, pipes and other automation can still pull outputs from any side.[14]
  • Right-click with a wrench to rotate a machine, and sneak while clicking to rotate its output side.[14]
Watch out: Breaking a machine with the wrench won't drop it. Use a pickaxe to pick machines up.[14]

Multiblocks, controllers and hatches

Every multiblock is run by a controller, but you usually can't interact with the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches, and if a required hatch is missing, the multiblock won't start. Chanced outputs, like creosote from the Coke Oven, get voided if there's no room for them, so give byproducts somewhere to go.[16]

Hold a wrench to see missing blocks and structure errors, and hold a hatch to see where it can go. In this pack, rendering.hatchPlacementOverlay is enabled, so valid positions show up while you hold a hatch.[16][17]

Hatches also set a multiblock's tier. Steel hatches hold more than bronze ones, and a multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier. It then runs twice as fast as long as its energy usage wouldn't exceed 4 EU/t.[15]

Electric multiblocks like the Electric Blast Furnace need Energy Input Hatches, or they won't get any energy. An LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables, and an MV Energy Input Hatch only connects to MV cables.[18]

Some multiblocks come in different sizes. The Distillation Tower gives you one output per layer, and this pack keeps its maximum height at 9, the same as the mod default.[19][20]

Electric machines and overclocking

Electric machines work just like steam machines, except they use electricity and progressively overclock recipes. Regular electric machines cap out at 32 EU/t, and electric multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t. Add upgrades in the machine's menu to raise that cap, and check REI for the exact amounts.[21]

Overclocking is the heart of the mod. With enough upgrades and energy, machines and multiblocks can reach 1 craft per tick. Production automatically adapts to what you consume, and machines reach their full power when they run continuously.[1][2]

  • Lubricant: right-click an electric machine with a lubricant container to overclock it by hand. Each 25 mb adds 1 efficiency tick.[21]
  • Overdrive Module: keeps efficiency from dropping when the machine stops. The machine keeps drawing its full EU/t while idle, and if your power can't keep up, efficiency drops as normal.[22]
  • Machine Hull upgrade: right-click a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull to switch it to MV tier. After that it only accepts MV cables.[22]
  • Redstone Control Module: configure it in your hand, then insert it into a machine or multiblock controller to control it with redstone signals.[21]

Power networks

Every cable has a tier, which decides how many EU/t it can carry and which machines it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV. Single-block electric machines only connect to LV cables. The Steam Turbine only connects to cables placed on its output side.[13]

A network pulls in at most 256 EU/t on LV, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV. There's no output limit and cables have a small internal buffer, so an LV network can briefly deliver more than 256 EU/t. To move more energy, build several networks or use Transformers. A low-to-high Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[13]

Modern Industrialization cables can power blocks from any mod, but they only extract energy from Modern Industrialization blocks and machines. They're also the only cables that can power this mod's machines.[11]

Watch out: This pack changes the conversion rate: forgeEnergyPerEu is set to 16 Forge Energy per EU, up from the mod default of 10. Keep that in mind when you compare numbers with other mods.[23]

The pack also turns on compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat, which enables two-way compatibility with NeoForge's energy system. The option's own description recommends leaving it off unless other mods have been balanced for it.[20]

Unverified Whether this setting lets Modern Industrialization cables pull power from other mods' generators in this pack isn't confirmed. Test it in your world before you build around it.

Pipes in general

Up to 3 pipes fit in a single block, and pipes of different colors won't connect. Right-click a pipe with a wrench to change its connection type, or shift-right-click to drop it.[24]

Fluid pipes

A fluid pipe holds only one fluid type and won't connect to empty pipes or blocks by default. To force a connection, right-click the center of the pipe with a wrench, or right-click a block while holding a pipe. Every tick, fluid pipes try to extract evenly from all connected blocks and then insert evenly.[24]

Throughput depends on buffer size. Each pipe holds exactly 1,000 millibuckets, and connected pipes link up and share storage. The network's per-tick rate is capped by its total capacity, so 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding a steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. The tanks or machines at either end can still limit you.[25]

Item pipes

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, but you can force a connection. Right-click a connection without a wrench to open its filter. Filters start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you add items or switch to blacklist. Item pipes fill higher-priority destinations first and can be upgraded with Motors.[24]

Tip: If items won't move, check both ends of the pipe. Both sides need to be configured, otherwise items won't move.[24]

In this pack, baseItemPipeTransfer stays at the default of 16 items every 3 seconds. To copy pipe settings, use a configuration card. Hold it in your offhand and every Item Pipe you place gets its settings automatically. The card can also camouflage pipes.[23][26]

Storage and buffering

  • Configurable Chest: 27 configurable slots with auto-eject, craftable once you have Analog Circuits.[21]
  • Configurable Tank: the fluid version, with 9 configurable slots that hold 16 buckets each, plus auto-eject.[27]
  • Large Tank: stores 64 buckets for every block in the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, through the controller or a Large Tank Hatch. Don't break the controller, or you lose all the stored fluid.[28]
  • Automatic Trash Can: destroys any item or fluid piped into it, and can empty a machine's fluid tank when you click it on that tank.[15]

Automating crafting

The Assembler is the first machine you'll want lots of. It can automate almost any recipe, up to 3 per Assembler if you use slot locking. The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts as soon as possible, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[21]

The guide strongly discourages pairing the mod with on-demand automation like AE2 or Refined Storage, since machines are strongest when they run nonstop. All the Mods 10 still has compat.ae2Integration turned on, and the pack has changed the recipes for ME Wire.[2][20][29]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

6 parts

Forge Hammer is your entry into one of the biggest tech mods in the pack. Modern Industrialization has several tiers of machines, but you don't need the final tier for the ATM Star. In this pack the Modern Industrialization route to the Star is optional, and you can use Create instead if you prefer. The questline starts with "Modern Industrialization" quest.[9]

The Electric Age (LV)

Your first big jump is turning steam into electricity. The LV Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb every tick. It is a Low Voltage (LV) machine and only connects to cables on its output side.[13][30]

Electric machines work like their steam versions, but they run on electricity and overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t. Electric multiblocks cap out at 128 EU/t until you add upgrades.[21]

Tip: Build lots of Assemblers early. You can run up to 3 recipes per Assembler with slot locking, and automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts makes crafting electric machines basically free.[21]

Motors go into a huge number of machines, so automate them first.

Every cable has a tier. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV. A network pulls in at most 256 EU/t on LV cables, 1024 EU/t on MV cables and 8192 EU/t on HV cables. Single-block machines only connect to LV cables. To move more power, you can build separate networks or use Transformers like the LV to MV Transformer, which has 5 inputs and 1 output.[13]

Aluminum and MV

The Electric Blast Furnace opens up the next set of materials. Build it with Heatproof Machine Casing layers top and bottom and two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coil in between. Put bauxite dust in it to get aluminum, which unlocks the Centrifuge, Chemical Reactor, Distillery and Electrolyzer.[18][27]

Right-click a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull to upgrade it to MV tier. After that it only accepts MV cable connections.[22]

The Digital Age

"The Digital Age" quest asks for a Digital Circuit, and a lot of the quest tree branches out from it.[7]

  1. Mix Kanthal Dust, smelt it in the Electric Blast Furnace, and cool the hot ingot in the Vacuum Freezer.[7]
  2. Turn Kanthal Ingots into fine wire, then cable, then Kanthal Coil. Switch the coils in the EBF's GUI so it can run at higher temperatures.[7]
  3. With Kanthal Coils, process Raw Titanium into Titanium Hot Ingot. This step needs Manganese Sulfuric Solution. Then cool it in the Vacuum Freezer to get Titanium Ingot.[7]
  4. Mine Tungsten Ore for Raw Tungsten and crush it into dust. Break the dust down into tiny dust, compress that into nuggets in the Electric Compressor, and combine 9 nuggets into 1 ingot.[7]
  5. Make Mixed Blastproof Ingot in the Packer. You can then press it into Blastproof Alloy Plate in the Electric Compressor, but this route is inefficient.[7]

"More Advanced Components" quest asks for an Advanced Pump and an Advanced Motor, which lead into the Turbo Machine Hull. Each Turbo Upgrade adds 64 EU/t of capacity.[7]

  • The Distillation Tower is the upgraded Distillery and gives you multiple outputs from one input. The quest asks for 27 Clean Stainless Steel Machine Casings and 3 Stainless Steel Pipe Machine Casings, and Crude Oil needs a height of 3.[7]
  • The Processing Array simulates machines running in parallel, up to 64 at once.[7]
  • The Heat Exchanger produces a huge amount of steam.[7]
  • The Implosion Compressor needs 14 Solid Titanium Machine Casings and 16 Blastproof Casings. It makes Mixed Blastproof Alloy Ingots more efficiently.[7]

Processing Units and Large Advanced Motors

The Processing Unit brings together several branches of the questline: the Memory Management Unit and Arithmetic Logic Unit, Random Access Memory, and the Processing Unit Board. It unlocks the Highly Advanced Machine Hull, along with the Large Advanced Motor and Large Advanced Pump needed for the ATM Star.[7]

Nuclear

After the Implosion Compressor, you'll make Nuclear Alloy Plate and 2 Cadmium Control Rod, then build the Nuclear Reactor. The quest lists parts for a Large reactor and doesn't recommend smaller sizes. The reactor turns water into Deuterium. Reacting Deuterium with Oxygen gives Heavy Water, and running Heavy Water through the reactor produces Tritium.[7]

Start with basic uranium fuel rods. Centrifuge Uranium Dust to get isotopes for LE and HE uranium and MOX rods, and recycle depleted rods to get plutonium in "Getting Plutonium" quest.[7]

What the ATM Star needs

Beyond all this there's a Quantum Tier with the most powerful machine upgrade in the mod. You don't need that final tier for the Star.[9][31]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization doesn't sit in its own corner of All the Mods 10. The pack adds recipes that link it to other mods: your Electric Quarry digs up other mods' ores, the Mixer handles modded dyes, and several endgame crafts need Modern Industrialization parts. Here's where those connections are.[29]

Electric Quarry: ores from other mods

The pack adds its own Electric Quarry recipes, so each drill tier also gives ores from All the Ores and Powah, not just Modern Industrialization's own. Pick the drill based on the ores you're after.[29][32]

Processing All the Ores dusts

The pack adds an Electrolyzer recipe for Dirty Aluminum Dust. It gives you Aluminum Dust, Oxygen and a bit of Titanium Tiny Dust.[29]

Electrolyzer (modern_industrialization)

Dyenamics dyes in the Mixer

The pack gives every Dyenamics colour, from Amber Dye to Wine Dye, two Mixer recipes: one uses Benzene and the other uses Synthetic Oil. Pick whichever one your oil setup already makes.[29]

Extended Industrialization

Extended Industrialization builds on Modern Industrialization parts. Most of its machines can be crafted by hand or in the Assembler, including the Electric Bending Machine, Electric Alloy Smelter and Steel Alloy Smelter. Tip: You can turn a Bronze Bending Machine into a Steel Bending Machine with a Steel Upgrade, either by crafting or in the Packer. The Unpacker splits it back into the bronze machine and the upgrade.[29]

The Digital Age quests also include Extended Industrialization's Processing Array in a quest in "Digital Age". It simulates up to 64 copies of a machine running in parallel and accepts upgrades.[7]

All the Tweaks endgame crafts

Some of the pack's big crafts need a Modern Industrialization part. The Improbable Probability Device needs Blastproof Casing, the Nexium Emitter needs a Large Advanced Motor, and Philosopher's Fuel needs a Uranium Quad Fuel Rod. Plan your Modern Industrialization base with these in mind.[29]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Modern Industrialization?

3 parts

Modern Industrialization runs through several quest chapters in this pack. You meet it in Electric Age: No more rookie, it takes over most of the Digital Age chapter, and it appears again as one route to the ATM Star in Chapter 3: The ATM Star.[6][7][9]

Unverified The End Game chapter may also contain Modern Industrialization quests, but its contents couldn't be checked for this guide.

Electric Age: No more rookie

The quest line calls this the real beginning of your adventure. "The Electric Age" quest asks for 4 Battery Alloy Ingot. Next you make a Basic Machine Hull, and then "Basic Components" quest wants a Piston, Pump, Motor and Conveyor.[6]

Hulls matter more than they look. A hull caps how much power a machine accepts, and it decides which cables can connect. When you add upgrades to a machine, you need a higher-tier hull to push more power in.[6]

Digital Age

This chapter branches out from "The Digital Age" quest, which asks for a Digital Circuit. From there you can start on Kanthal, tungsten and "More Advanced Components" quest (an Advanced Pump and Advanced Motor). The advanced components lead to the Turbo Machine Hull.[7]

Tip: You pick the Distillation Tower's height in its GUI, and you need more height for more outputs. Crude Oil needs a height of 3.[7]

Chapter 3: The ATM Star

This chapter opens with "Modern Industrialization" quest, which asks for a Forge Hammer. Good news: in this pack Modern Industrialization is now entirely optional for the Star, so you can go the Create route instead.[9]

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

5 parts

Most of Modern Industrialization's settings are fine as they are, but a few change how you play, especially when you move power between MI and other mods. Here's what matters in All the Mods 10 8.1 and how the pack sets each option.[17][20][23]

Energy conversion (changed by the pack)

This is the big one. forgeEnergyPerEu sets how many Forge Energy units one EU from MI is worth. The mod default is 10, but All the Mods 10 changes it to 16. Converting between MI's EU and other mods' FE is therefore more favourable here than in a standalone MI setup. The option accepts values from 1 to 1000.[23]

compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat is enabled in this pack. It turns on bidirectional energy compatibility with NeoForge's energy system. The config's own comment recommends leaving it off unless the other mods have been balanced for it, so the pack has chosen to allow energy to flow both ways.[20]

Pipes and machines

Mod integrations

Guidebook

Watch out: Don't expect a guidebook when you log in. Both spawnWithGuideBook and respawnWithGuideBook are off, so the pack doesn't give you one on your first join or after you die.[23]

Client-side quality of life

These live in your client config, so you can change them yourself without affecting anyone else.[17]
