What is Productive Bees?
3 parts
Productive Bees builds on the vanilla bees you already know and turns them into a resource-farming system. Your bees make resource combs, and you process those combs into resources and honey. All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.21.1-13.13.5 of the mod.[1][2][3][4]
The kinds of bees you'll meet
- Solitary bees live in well-hidden nests in different biomes around the overworld. They won't live in a hive, but their genetics are what let you breed new bee types.[2][5]
- Wild bees also live in nests, but unlike solitary bees they'll happily move into a hive. You'll mostly find them in the Nether and the End.[6]
- Hive bees produce honey and resources, but they have to live in advanced hives to make resource combs. Most are bred from other bees. Some are made by giving a specific item to a bee or by crafting spawn eggs.[3]
- Professional bees do special jobs instead of making resource combs. For example, they can harvest nearby crops, chop wood or milk animals.[7][8][9][10]
On top of that there's a full genetics system. You can pull genes out of bees and transfer traits like productivity, weather tolerance and temper to other bees using honey treats.[11][12]
Where it fits in this pack
Your first step is finding a vanilla bee nest for honey bottles and honeycombs. You need the honey bottles to craft a Bee Cage, which the "Capturing Bees!" quest quest has you make so you can capture bees and bring them home.[2][13]
You won't spend most of your time flying around hunting for bees. Instead, you lure them into nests with a Honey Treat. Some nests need special items instead of treats, and some bees only show up in the right biome, so check JEI.[13]
From there you scale up. A basic Centrifuge works early on, but the quests call a Powered Centrifuge a must soon after. The Heated Centrifuge is faster still and processes comb blocks instead of combs. Once you're ready, the Breeding Chamber breeds bees for you automatically.[13]
The ATM Star connection
Productive Bees feeds directly into the ATM Star chapter. The "Withered Comb Block" quest quest asks for a Comb Block from a Withered Bee. A Skeletal Bee may move into a hive that's left empty in the dark, and feeding it a Wither Rose turns it into a Withered Bee.[14][15][16]
The "Soul Lava Bee Spawn Egg" quest quest needs a Soul Lava Bee egg. To make one, you pour a bucket of Soul Lava over a Ghostly Bee egg. Soul Lava comes from Allthemodium: it's found very rarely underground in The Other and is common in Piglich Villages.[14]
How do you get started with Productive Bees?
5 parts
Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so your first job is to find a regular vanilla bee nest. Grab some honey bottles and honeycombs from it, because those two items unlock everything else on this list.[2]
Step 1: Bee Cages
Your honey bottles go straight into Bee Cages, which make moving bees home much easier. Right-click a bee with a cage to catch it, then right-click the filled cage on the ground to release it. Always carry a few when you travel in case you spot an interesting bee. This is also your first pack quest, "Capturing Bees!" quest, and adventuring can net you some Sturdy Bee Cages too.[2][13][17]

Step 2: Advanced Beehive and Expansion Box
Once you have enough honeycombs, build an Advanced Beehive and an Expansion Box. Hive bees have to live in advanced hives to produce resource combs. The hive's GUI lets you see which bees are inside and take out whatever they produce. Unlike a vanilla hive, it doesn't need a campfire to harvest, and you can break and move it with the bees still inside, no Silk Touch needed.[2][3][18]
The Expansion Box raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades. You can place it on top of the hive or next to it, but each hive can only have one.[18][19]
Unverified The exact in-pack recipes for the Advanced Beehive and Expansion Box weren't available for this page, so look them up in JEI. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Step 3: Honey Treats and Nests
In this pack you don't spend most of your time hunting for specific bees. Instead, you craft nests and right-click them with Honey Treats to lure bees in. Some nests need special items instead of Honey Treats, and many only work in certain biomes, so check JEI. The quest a quest in "Productive Bees" covers this step.[13]
Honey Treats are made in the Bottler, which also bottles honey and other fluids. You can pump honey into its side, or place it next to a centrifuge so it fills automatically.[20][21]

Good first nests for the Overworld:[13]
- Wood Nests such as the Oak Nest work in any Overworld biome and lure Carpenter Bees and the Blue Banded Bee. The Dark Oak Nest lures 3 different bees. See "Wood Nests" quest.[13]
- The Stone Nest works in any Overworld biome and lures a Mason Bee or a Digger Bee.[13]
- The Dirt Nest works in any Overworld biome and lures the Ashy Mining Bee, Chocolate Mining Bee or Leafcutter Bee.[13]
- The Sand Nest attracts a Chocolate or Ashy Mining Bee when placed in a Desert biome.[13]
Step 4: The Centrifuge
Your hive bees produce resource combs, and the Centrifuge turns them into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid, which you can pump out, and it automatically outputs fluid into any fluid storage block placed next to it. The quest for this step is a quest in "Productive Bees".[4][13][24]

A second Centrifuge recipe in the pack
The pack's quest calls a Powered Centrifuge a must soon after your first centrifuge. It runs on power and processes faster. Later, the Heated Centrifuge is faster again and processes Comb Blocks instead of Combs.[4][13]
What comes next
Some bees can only be found in other dimensions or bred, so use JEI to look up breeding recipes and plan which bees to collect. For example, breeding a Crystalline Bee with an Ashy Mining Bee gives an Iron Bee. Crystalline Bees come from the Quartz Nest in the Nether, which is lured with Nether Quartz instead of Honey Treats.[2][13][25]
How does Productive Bees work?
9 parts
Everything in Productive Bees revolves around one loop: bees live in advanced hives, bring back resource combs, and you run those combs through a centrifuge to get the actual resources and honey. Once you understand the hives, the upgrades and the handful of machines around them, you can automate almost the whole thing.[3][4][24]
Advanced hives and expansion boxes
The advanced hive is the heart of every bee setup. Unlike a vanilla hive, it doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested, and you can break it and move it with the bees still inside without silk touch. Its GUI shows which bees are currently inside and lets you take out whatever they've produced. You'll find many wood variants, depending on which woods your pack adds.[18]
Attach an expansion box to an advanced hive to raise its bee capacity from 3 to 5 and unlock upgrade slots. You can place the box on top of the hive or next to it, but each hive can only have one expansion box.[18][19]

Bee cages are how you move bees in and out of a hive by hand. Put empty cages into the advanced hive to pull bees out, or filled cages to insert them. If you release a caged bee on a valid flower block, that block becomes its flower position. Sneak while releasing it on a hive or nest and that becomes its new home.[17][26]

Impatient? Whack a hive or nest with a stick to force the bees out. They lose all production progress, and this only works if it's safe for them to exit.[18]
Hive upgrades
Upgrades go into hives and machines to add features or boost performance, and they're all built from a shared upgrade base. Here's what each one does in a hive:[26][27]
- Productivity: bees produce more combs per trip. You can install several for a bigger boost.[26][27]
- Speed: bees spend less time inside the hive.[27]
- BaBee: every time honey is delivered, there's a chance a new baby bee spawns, based on the bees in the hive. It doesn't work for species that can't self-breed. More upgrades give a better chance.[26][27]
- Filter: right-click a bee with the upgrade to add it to the filter, and only those bees can enter the hive. Put the filter in a crafting grid to clear it.[26][27]
- Range: raises the operating range of Farmer and Collector or Hoarder bees by 1 per upgrade, from the default of 4.[27]
- Anti-teleport: bees that can teleport stop doing so while they live in the hive.[26][27]
- Gene sampler: slowly pulls gene samples from visiting bees. You can stack several for more gene output.[26][27]
- Comb block: bees produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs.[26][27]
- Simulator: bees never leave the hive, and their flower trips are simulated for better server performance. Their flower block or feeding slab must sit at the foot of the hive, right below the front and not blocking it.[27]
Processing combs: Centrifuge and Bottler
The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It stores 10 buckets of liquid, which you can pump out, and it automatically pushes fluid into any fluid storage block placed next to it. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE and processes faster.[4]
Centrifuges take upgrades too. A speed upgrade increases operation speed. The first-tier productivity upgrade raises the stack processing rate by 4, and the second tier by 8, and both stack. A filter upgrade limits the centrifuge to combs produced by the bees on its filter, which is handy when several comb types share a line.[26][27]

Power: the Honey Generator
The Honey Generator burns honey to make power. You can pipe honey in, or load honey bottles, blocks and buckets through its GUI. It takes two upgrades: productivity lowers honey consumption, and more of them lower it further, while speed makes it run faster. Pair it with a centrifuge's honey output and your bees can power your machines.[26][29]
Breeding, catching and growing bees
The Breeding Chamber lets you breed bees safely inside a machine. Supply the two parent bees, their breeding items, power and empty cages for the offspring. Speed upgrades make it faster. To change which output it produces, remove a cage and put it back.[26][30]

The Catcher catches any bee that flies over it, as long as it's loaded with cages. Put a flower or feeding slab on top to lure bees in. It accepts a BaBee upgrade so it only catches baby bees, a filter upgrade so it only catches the filtered species, and range upgrades. Each range upgrade expands its area by 1 block in all directions, and you can stack them.[26][27][31]
The Incubator speeds up growing BaBees. Insert a caged baby bee along with honey treats, and speed upgrades make it work faster. It can also infuse an egg with a bee type gene to create a spawn egg of that type. Only the type gene is used, so any extra genes on the honey treat are lost.[27][32]
Automating genetics
- Set up a Bottler with a piston and keep empty bottles in the bottler. Place a bee in the middle and pull the lever to bottle it up.[20][33]
- Throw the bottled bee into a centrifuge, which separates the genetic material into genes.[4][26][33]
- Raise a gene's purity by combining two of the same gene or by putting more of that gene onto a treat. The Gene Indexer can do the combining for you: fill it up and give it a redstone signal.[12][26][34]
- Combine the gene with a honey treat and feed it to a bee. The bee has a chance to gain the new attribute, and higher purity improves that chance.[11][12]
If you'd rather skip the piston contraption, a gene sampler upgrade in a hive slowly collects genes from bees as they visit.[26][27]
Automated farms with professional bees
Some bees do jobs instead of making resources. A Farmer bee harvests nearby crops within a 4 block radius of its home hive and leaves the produce on the ground. If a right-click harvest mod is present, it harvests that way instead. Pair it with a Collector or Hoarder bee, which picks up items from the ground and stores them in its hive, and range upgrades in the hive widen the area both bees cover.[8][27][35][36]
Lumber bees nibble nearby wood and Quarry bees nibble stone, sand or gravel, storing the results in their hive. Quarry bees produce stone chips that you craft back into blocks. Rancher bees milk nearby cows, sheep or llamas into milky combs, and they shear sheep too.[9][10][37]
Feeding slabs and simulated hives
A Feeding Slab is a central feeding spot that holds 3 item blocks. When Lumber or Quarry bees feed from it, they produce from a random item in the feeder. A simulated hive only has 1 flower block position, so a feeding slab underneath lets up to 3 different bees work in that hive. Honeylog the slab and the bees get regeneration while feeding.[26][27][38]
Keeping it running smoothly
Bees are real entities, and their pathing and AI are expensive. Give every bee a home and its required flower block, and keep enclosures small so they don't wander off. For big farms, the simulator upgrade removes bee entities from the world entirely. If you run lots of centrifuges, consider turning off comb rendering with the option in config/productivebees-client.toml.[39]
Unverified The sources don't give the FE costs of the Powered Centrifuge or Breeding Chamber, the Honey Generator's power output, the exact percentage boost from hive productivity upgrades, or the gene sampler's extraction chance. Check these in-game.
How do you progress through Productive Bees?
6 parts
In All the Mods 10, Productive Bees follows a clear quest path. You start by catching and luring wild bees, then move them into Advanced Beehives. From there you breed them into resource bees, transform them into rarer bees, and finally tune their genes. You won't spend most of your time flying around hunting for specific bees. Instead, you craft Nests and lure bees into them.[13]
Tier 1: Catching your first bees
Your first quest is "Capturing Bees!" quest. Right-click a bee with a Bee Cage to capture it, and keep an eye out for Sturdy Bee Cages while adventuring. Next is "Searching for Nests" quest: right-click a Nest Locator on a Nest of the type you want, and it points you towards another one.[13]

The main way to get bees is to place Nests and right-click them with a Honey Treat to lure bees in. Some Nests want a special item instead of Honey Treats, and the biome matters, so check JEI for each one.[13]
Once you have a Bottler, you can also make Honey Treats in it.
One of the Honey Treat crafting recipes is changed by the pack, so trust the in-pack version shown below over older guides.[21]

Tier 2: Nests by dimension
- Overworld, any biome: Wood Nests such as the Oak Nest lure Carpenter Bees and the Blue Banded Bee. The Stone Nest lures Mason or Digger Bees. The Dirt Nest lures Ashy Mining, Chocolate Mining or Leafcutter Bees. The Reed Nest lures Mason or Reed Bees.[13]
- Overworld, specific biomes: the Sand Nest works in deserts, the Snow Nest in snowy biomes, the Gravel Nest in river or beach biomes, and the Slimy Nest in swamps.[13]
- Nether: the Glowstone Nest takes Glowstone. The Soul Sand Nest takes Ghast Tears. The Quartz Nest takes Nether Quartz. The Nether Brick Nest takes Magma Cream. The Nether Gold Nest takes Gold Ingots.[13]
- End: the End Stone Nest lures Ender Bees with Popped Chorus Fruit. The Obsidian Nest lures Draconic Bees with Dragon's Breath.[13]
Tier 3: Advanced Beehives and your first machines
Hive bees must live in Advanced Hives to produce resource combs. Unlike vanilla hives, an Advanced Hive doesn't need a campfire, and you can move it with the bees inside without Silk Touch. Adding an expansion box raises the bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades.[3][18]
Some bees simply move in on their own. If you leave empty Advanced Beehives in an unlit area, Skeletal Bees and ZomBees will move in over time at night.[13][15][40]
To turn combs into resources and honey, you need a Centrifuge. The basic Centrifuge is fine early on, but the quests recommend getting the FE-powered Powered Centrifuge soon after. The Heated Centrifuge is faster still and processes Comb Blocks instead of Combs. Speed Upgrades make all of them faster.[4][13]

Unverified The pack's Coal Bee quest lists Magmatic plus Leafcutter, while the mod's in-game guide says Blazing plus Leafcutter. Check JEI in your instance to confirm which parents it uses. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Tier 5: Transformations and cross-mod bees
Higher tiers often come from feeding items to bees. Feed a Diamond Bee Amethyst, Peridot, a Ruby or a Sapphire to get those gem bees. Feed a vanilla bee TNT to get a CreeBee, and feed a Skeletal Bee a Withered Rose to get a Withered Bee.[13][47]
Alloy bees use molten metal poured over spawn eggs. For example, Bronze Bees come from Molten Bronze over a Copper or Tin Bee Spawn Egg, and Steel Bees from Molten Steel over an Iron or Coal Bee Spawn Egg.[13]
Many cross-mod bees are made in other mods' machines, and the pack changed these recipes. Examples include AE2 transformation, the Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus, Ender IO alloy smelting, Draconic Evolution fusion crafting and the Ice and Fire dragonforge. For a Sky Steel Bee Spawn Egg, you throw a Spatial Bee Spawn Egg and a Sky Steel Block into Lava.[13][21]

Endgame: Genetics
To get genes, place a bee on a Bottler with bottles inside, with a piston above it and a block of space between them. Firing the piston squishes the bee into a bottle, which you then process in a Centrifuge to get a Gene Sample. You can combine genes in a crafting grid, or let a Gene Indexer do it automatically with a redstone signal.[13][34]
To apply a trait, combine the gene with a Honey Treat and feed it to the bee. The Type gene works differently: it goes into the BaBee Incubator with an egg to make a spawn egg, and at 100% purity the conversion is guaranteed. The Incubator also grows a caged baby bee into an adult with 20 Honey Treats.[13]
The trait worth chasing first is Productivity, which runs from Normal to Medium, High and Very High and gives more combs per trip. You can stack that with Productivity upgrades in the hive.[11][27]
How does Productive Bees work with other mods?
5 parts
Productive Bees is heavily wired into the rest of All the Mods 10. Items from dozens of other mods turn ordinary bees into resource bees, your combs spin out other mods' materials, and add-on machines and pack recipes use bee items as crafting parts. Many of these recipes are marked as added or changed by the pack, so always trust the in-game recipe over what you remember from other packs.[21]
Turning bees into other mods' resource bees
Some hive bees aren't bred at all. Instead you give a bee a specific item to convert it. In this pack a big chunk of those conversion items come from other mods, including Applied Energistics 2, Actually Additions, Mekanism, Mystical Agriculture, Oritech, Just Dire Things, Forbidden Arcanus, Industrial Foregoing, Extreme Reactors, RFTools and Evilcraft. The pack has changed these conversion recipes, so check each one in JEI before you go farming the item.[3][21]

Making bees in other mods' machines
A few bees are created outside the normal bee mechanics. You throw a bee into Applied Energistics 2's in-world transformation with water or lava, run it through the Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus, or put it in an Ice and Fire Dragonforge with dragon blood to get the three Dragonsteel bees. Each of these hands you back the bee plus a spawn egg, and the pack has changed all of them.[21]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Productive Bees?
4 parts
Productive Bees has its own chapter in the questbook, called Productive Bees. You start by catching your first bees. Next you unlock the mod's machines and all its Nests. After that the chapter opens into a long list of bee quests, and most of them ask you to hand in a Honeycomb from that bee.[13]
Getting started
- "Capturing Bees!" quest comes right after the chapter's opening quest and asks for a Bee Cage. Right-click a bee with it to capture it, and watch for Sturdy Bee Cages while you're out adventuring.[13]
- "Searching for Nests" quest comes next and asks for a Nest Locator. Right-click a Nest of the type you want, and the locator points you toward another one.[13]
The machine quests
All of these quests unlock together once you finish the Advanced Beehive quest, so you can do them in any order.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Honey Treat. You get bees by right-clicking Nests with treats. Some Nests want special items instead, and the biome matters, so check JEI.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" accepts a Centrifuge, Powered Centrifuge or Heated Centrifuge. The Powered one is faster and runs on power. The Heated one is faster still and processes Comb Blocks instead of Combs. Speed Upgrades make all of them faster.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Bottler. It bottles honey, and it also squishes bees into genes: put a piston above it with one block of space between them. Put the squished bottle in a Centrifuge afterwards, and keep bottles in the Bottler.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Gene Indexer. It combines gene percentages for you automatically.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Catcher. It grabs nearby bees and works with Filter and BaBee Upgrades.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a BaBee Incubator. A caged baby bee plus 20 Honey Treats becomes an adult. The Incubator also turns Eggs into spawn eggs, and genes combined to 100% purity give a 100% chance.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Bee Jar so you can show off a caged bee. a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Feeding Slab, which holds Bee Flowers in front of Hives.[13]
- a quest in "Productive Bees" asks for a Breeding Chamber, which breeds bees automatically. Hold SHIFT over a bee cage to see which breeding item that bee needs.[13]
Nest quests
There is one quest per Nest, and they all unlock at the same point.[13]
- Any Overworld biome: "Wood Nests" quest asks for every wood Nest plus the Bamboo Nest. a quest in "Productive Bees", a quest in "Productive Bees" and a quest in "Productive Bees" cover the Stone Nest, Dirt Nest and Reed Nest.[13]
- Specific biomes: a quest in "Productive Bees" covers the Sand Nest (desert). a quest in "Productive Bees" covers the Snow Nest (snowy). a quest in "Productive Bees" covers the Gravel Nest (river or beach). a quest in "Productive Bees" covers the Slimy Nest (swamp).[13]
- Nether: these Nests want an item instead of Honey Treats. a quest in "Productive Bees" takes Glowstone, a quest in "Productive Bees" takes Ghast Tears, a quest in "Productive Bees" takes Nether Quartz, a quest in "Productive Bees" takes Magma Cream and a quest in "Productive Bees" takes Gold Ingots.[13]
- The End: a quest in "Productive Bees" needs Popped Chorus Fruit, and a quest in "Productive Bees" needs Dragon's Breath.[13]
Bee quests
The rest of the chapter is bee quests. Each one's subtitle tells you how to get the bee: from a Nest, by breeding two bees, by feeding a bee an item, by pouring molten metal over a spawn egg, or with another mod's machine.[13]
- "Ender Bee" quest unlocks after the Honey Treat quest. Take an End Stone Nest to the End.[13]
- "Diamond Bee" quest needs both "Ender Bee" quest and "Lapis Bee" quest. Breed those two bees together.[13]
- A few quests want a different comb: "CreeBee" quest asks for a Powdery Comb, "Rancher Bee" quest a Milky Comb, "Ghostly Bee" quest a Ghostly Comb and "Sugarbag Bee" quest a Sugarbag Honeycomb.[13]
- "Bumble Bee" quest asks for a Treat on a Stick and a saddle, so you can ride a Bumble Bee.[13]
Unverified The quest list available here was cut off, so the rest of the bee quests could not be checked. It is also unconfirmed whether other chapters, such as Chapter 3: The ATM Star, ask for Productive Bees items.
