What is Relics?
1 part
Relics is a drag-and-drop mod that adds unique items with layered mechanics. Each relic works on its own, but it gets even better combined with other relics or other mods. The mod adjusts its balance to the modpack, so it suits both vanilla-like packs and packs where health and damage run into the thousands.[1]
Relics level up and roll random stats, so no two copies are alike. The project page advertises 28 relics, an MMO-like random stat system, upgrades and customization, and a progressive active ability system. This pack ships version 0.12.8 for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]
The author has said a guidebook is not planned, so the quest chapter below is your main in-pack reference.[1]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book has its own chapter called "Relics". Each quest asks you to obtain one relic, and the ones shown in the sources are listed as coming after a quest named for a dimension. Here is what they show:[3]
- After "Overworld": "Jellyfish Necklace" quest for the Jellyfish Necklace, which you may find in chests in aquatic biomes, and "Rider Flute" quest for the Rider Flute, which stores up to 2 mounts.[3]
- After "The Nether": "Shield of Retaliation" quest for the Shield of Retaliation, a timing-based defensive relic, and "Reflective Necklace" quest for the Reflective Necklace.[3]
- After "The End": "Glitchy Mantle" quest for the Glitchy Mantle, "Kinetic Belt" quest for the Kinetic Belt, and "Chorus Staff" quest for the Chorus Staff, a teleportation staff.[3]
- "Experience Disperser" quest for the Experience Disperser is listed as coming after a quest named "Relics". Its ability shares Relic Experience with all your other relics whenever one gains it.[3]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here. Check the pack's quest book to see how the Relics chapter connects to it.
How do you get started with Relics?
5 parts
Here's the thing about Relics: it isn't a mod where you craft your way up a tool tier list. The mod adds 28 relics, and in this pack the only recipes that make Relics items are three ways of cooking meatballs. Your early game is about finding relics, wearing them, and levelling them up.[1][4]
Step 1: Follow the Relics quest chapter
The pack has a quest chapter called Relics. Each quest names one relic, describes its abilities, and sits after a dimension quest such as Overworld, The Nether or The End. Treat it as your checklist, since the mod's author has said a guidebook is not planned.[1][3]
Step 2: Start with the Overworld relics
Several relics sit after the Overworld quest, so they're your natural first targets. The Chef's Hat ("Chef's Hat" quest) gives you a chance to drop meatballs when you kill something. The Hunting Belt ("Hunting Belt" quest) boosts the damage your pets deal. The Rider Flute ("Rider Flute" quest) lets you store up to 2 tamed mounts and call them back later.[3]
The Jellyfish Necklace ("Jellyfish Necklace" quest) is another Overworld relic. The quest says you may find it inside chests in aquatic biomes, so check those when you explore the water.[3]
Step 3: Cook your meatballs
If you wear the Chef's Hat, the meatballs it drops are identical in properties to raw beef. You can eat them as they are or cook them for more nourishment. The pack has three ways to turn a Raw Meatball into a Cooked Meatball: a furnace, a smoker, or a campfire.[3][4][5]
Furnace version: smelting a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Smoker version: smoking a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Campfire Cooking
Recipe id: relics:cooked_meatball_from_campfire_cooking_raw_meatball
Campfire version: campfire cooking a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Step 4: Level up your relics
Relics have upgradeable abilities. Levelling up an ability improves its attributes and costs experience points. Rerolling randomly changes the ability's attributes for better or worse, and resetting drops the level back to the minimum and returns the spent upgrade points. Holding the listed key during a level-up or reroll repeats it automatically until you run out of experience or points.[5]
If you find the Experience Disperser ("Experience Disperser" quest), keep it on you. Whenever one of your relics gains relic experience, all your other relics gain experience too.[3]
Step 5: Head for the Nether and the End
In the Nether, the quests point to the Shield of Retaliation, Reflective Necklace, Sphere of Self-Sacrifice, Piglin Mask and Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins. The Piglin Mask makes piglins stop attacking you on sight, which is handy around bastions.[3]
The End has the Chorus Staff for short teleports, the Clot of Time for rewinding your movement, the Glitchy Mantle, and the Kinetic Belt. The Kinetic Belt raises the maximum number of amulets you can equip and lets you glide. Pair it with the Jellyfish Necklace and the quest describes an electric chain trail while you glide.[3]
How does Relics work?
6 parts
The mod's project page describes Relics as a mod about useful items with unique mechanics, with a leveling system and random stats. The sources here don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power networks or pipe automation, so this section covers how the relic abilities themselves work, as their tooltips describe them.[1]
Leveling, rerolling and resetting abilities
Each ability can be upgraded with experience points. Leveling up raises the ability's level and improves its attributes. Once an ability hits its maximum level, it can't be raised any further.[5]
A reroll randomly rerolls the ability's attributes for better or worse values. If the ability has already reached maximum quality, the tooltip says the reroll will definitely worsen it, and you have to hold a confirm key first to show you understand the possible consequences.[5]
A reset sets the ability's level back to the minimum and returns the spent upgrade points. If the ability has already reached its minimum level, the tooltip says resetting is not required. The tooltips list the cost of level-up, reroll and reset as experience points, with a relative level count alongside.[5]
- According to the tooltip, holding the level-up key during the action automatically levels up the ability until experience or upgrade points run out.[5]
- According to the tooltip, holding the reroll key during the action automatically rerolls attributes until the maximum possible rarity is achieved or experience points run out.[5]
- Some ability effects only apply from a given rank. The tooltips mark these with "Starting from rank".[5]
Researching abilities
The tooltips describe researching an ability as a small puzzle. You move the cursor over the fog on the left to explore the ability icon underneath and find hidden stars. Then you match the icon's star pattern and connect the stars into a constellation.[5]
There are hints. You can see particles at the star positions even through the fog, and the number of dots flying around a star tells you how many connections it needs.[5]
How relics gain experience
Each ability's tooltip lists its own experience sources. Here is what the tooltips list for a few relics.[5]
- Chef Hat: +1 experience for each meatball dropped, each meatball consumed, and each point of health restored by meatballs.[5]
- Chorus Staff: +1 experience for each teleport, each safe landing after teleportation, and each target that lost sight of the relic bearer during teleportation.[5]
- Clot of Time: +1 experience for every second spent in rewind mode, and for every point of health restored by the health rewind modifier.[5]
- Cut Glass Boot: +1 experience for each second spent moving across the liquid.[5]
- Experience Disperser: +1 experience for each point of experience distributed by dispersion.[5]
Ability mechanics worth knowing
Per its tooltip, the Chorus Staff's Blink teleports you forward up to a set number of blocks, consuming 1 unit from an internal buffer that regenerates automatically over time. With the ascent rank modifier, using it while looking at a block within reach teleports you to that block instead, and if there are other blocks above the target, the remaining distance is used to find a safe location. Other rank modifiers make nearby targets briefly lose sight of you and remove fall damage on landing.[5]
The Clot of Time's Rewind works while you hold right mouse button. It smoothly returns you along the path you recently traveled. After the rewind ends, the ability goes on cooldown for the same amount of time you used it continuously without interruption. Rank modifiers can restore health to the value it had at that point on the path (it never reduces your current health), stop you taking damage, or make nearby entities lose sight of you.[5]
Per its tooltip, the Experience Disperser shares experience between relics. When any of your relics gains experience, all equipped relics additionally receive a percentage of that amount. Rank modifiers let it trigger even if the relic that gained experience is at max level, give relics of the same type extra experience from dispersion, and distribute part of the experience you gain from experience orbs among your equipped relics.[5]
The Cut Glass Boot and fluids
This is the closest thing the sources show to fluid handling. When the relic is held, the tooltip says it works like a regular bucket that stores a limited number of liquids up to a total volume in mB. To switch the currently selected liquid, hold the relic, press Shift and scroll the mouse wheel.[5]
The tooltip says that when the relic is equipped, it allows movement across any liquid stored in its internal buffer. Movement speed on the liquid is halved compared to normal, but for every 1000 mB of liquid of the same type, speed on it increases by a percentage.[5]
Chef Hat meatballs and cooking
The Chef Hat adds food to your kills. Killing a target has a chance to drop 1 meatball, which has the same properties as raw beef. You can eat Raw Meatball right away or cook it into Cooked Meatball for more benefit.[4][5]
Higher ranks improve this. Dropped meatballs can be cooked automatically, and meatballs restore health when eaten, with cooked ones restoring twice as much. Another rank modifier makes meatballs get consumed 3 times faster.[5]
The pack lets you cook a raw meatball in a furnace, a smoker or a campfire. Each method has its own recipe:[4]
Furnace: smelting a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Smoker: smoking a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Campfire Cooking
Recipe id: relics:cooked_meatball_from_campfire_cooking_raw_meatball
Campfire: campfire cooking a raw meatball gives a cooked meatball.
Unverified The tooltips only show placeholders for values such as drop chances, teleport distance, buffer size, rewind time and experience percentages. No config files for this mod are available as sources here, so this pack's exact numbers are not confirmed. Check the in-game tooltips for the real values.
How do you progress through Relics?
5 parts
Relics don't follow a classic crafting ladder in this pack. The quest chapter sorts them by where you'll find them: the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Each relic quest comes after the matching dimension quest, so your progression is mostly about travelling to new places and bringing back gear.[3]
The pack's recipe dump only shows recipes for cooking meatballs. It lists no crafting recipes for the relics themselves.[4]
Tier 1: Overworld relics
These are the first ones to chase, and several hint at where they hide. Each of these quests comes after the Overworld quest.[3]
- Jellyfish Necklace can be found inside chests in aquatic biomes. It boosts max health and regeneration while you're submerged or in the rain, and it can shock nearby enemies. Quest: "Jellyfish Necklace" quest.[3]
- Leafy Mantle hides among the densest trees of Forest and Tropic biomes. It lets you move through leaves, take no fall damage, and can absorb a fatal blow. Quest: "Leafy Mantle" quest.[3]
- Springy Boot waits in Mountain biomes. A crouch jump launches you away from where you're looking, and bouncing on landing cancels fall damage. Quest: "Springy Boot" quest.[3]
- Roller Skate is hidden in the Overworld. The longer you run continuously, the more speed you gain, but surfaces get slipperier. Quest: "Roller Skate" quest.[3]
- Rider Flute stores up to 2 tamed riding animals. Right-click a mount to put it in, and right-click again to release or recall it. Quest: "Rider Flute" quest.[3]
- Hunting Belt increases the damage your pets deal. Quest: "Hunting Belt" quest.[3]
- Cut Glass Boot lets you walk on water, lava or poison once you've stored that liquid in its internal buffer. Quest: "Cut Glass Boot" quest.[3]
- Chef's Hat gives defeated enemies a chance to produce meatballs. Quest: "Chef's Hat" quest.[3]
The Chef's Hat meatballs
The meatball from the Chef's Hat is described as identical to raw beef. You can eat it directly or cook it for greater restoration. The pack has recipes that turn the Raw Meatball into a Cooked Meatball by smelting, smoking or campfire cooking.[3][4]
The smoking and campfire cooking versions are separate recipes with the same result.
Tier 2: Nether relics
These quests come after the Nether quest. The relics lean towards combat, risk and reward.[3]
- Shield of Retaliation blocks the next instance of damage for a short window. If you miss the timing, you become more vulnerable for a while. Quest: "Shield of Retaliation" quest.[3]
- Reflective Necklace has a chance to store part of the damage you take in an orb, then launches those orbs at your target when you attack. Quest: "Reflective Necklace" quest.[3]
- Sphere of Self-Sacrifice trades a portion of your maximum health for strong regeneration over time. Quest: "Sphere of Self-Sacrifice" quest.[3]
- Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins has 7 abilities, and each one gives a bonus with a cost attached. Quest: "Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins" quest.[3]
- Ghostly Mantle has 3 abilities: a harmful mist trail, a weakening gaze on mobs or players looking at you from 30 blocks or closer, and a spectral escape from lethal attacks. Quest: "Ghostly Mantle" quest.[3]
- Piglin Mask is found among Bastion ruins. It makes piglins stop attacking you on sight, can give multiple items per barter, and makes defeated enemies able to drop golden teeth. Quest: "Piglin Mask" quest.[3]
- Golden Tooth comes after the Piglin Mask quest. You can trade it with piglins or melt it into gold. Quest: "Golden Tooth" quest.[3]
Tier 3: End relics
The End quests are the last group, and they focus on movement, time and reality-bending effects.[3]
- Chorus Staff teleports you a short distance forward, using charges from an internal buffer that slowly regenerates. Quest: "Chorus Staff" quest.[3]
- Kinetic Belt raises the maximum number of amulets you can equip and lets you glide by holding jump. Quest: "Kinetic Belt" quest.[3]
- Clot of Time rewinds your movement along your recent path for a few seconds while you hold the use key. Quest: "Clot of Time" quest.[3]
- Glitchy Mantle has 3 abilities, including enemies sometimes missing you and walking on air like scaffolding. Quest: "Glitchy Mantle" quest.[3]
- Midnight Mantle has 4 abilities, including damage and attack speed that depend on the Moon's phase, and invisibility in low light. Quest: "Midnight Mantle" quest.[3]
The Experience Disperser
The quest for Experience Disperser comes directly after the chapter itself rather than after any dimension. Every time one Relic gains Relic Experience, all your other Relics gain experience too. Quest: "Experience Disperser" quest.[3]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Relics?
4 parts
Every Relics quest sits in one chapter, called Relics. Each quest asks you to get the matching relic item, so this chapter works as a checklist for finding them. The quests are gated by the names "Overworld", "The Nether" and "The End", so you can tackle the relics roughly in the order of the dimensions you visit.[3]
Starting point
- "Experience Disperser" quest is the only quest that follows the Relics chapter itself. It asks for the Experience Disperser, whose ability shares Relic Experience: when one Relic gains it, all your other Relics gain it too.[3]
Overworld relics
These quests follow "Overworld", so you can do them early. Each asks you to obtain the relic named in the quest.[3]
- "Jellyfish Necklace" quest: the Jellyfish Necklace, which can be found in chests in aquatic biomes.[3]
- "Rider Flute" quest: the Rider Flute, which stores up to 2 tamed mounts.[3]
- "Hunting Belt" quest: the Hunting Belt, which boosts the damage your pets deal.[3]
- "Chef's Hat" quest: the Chef's Hat, which can produce meatballs when an enemy is defeated.[3]
- "Leafy Mantle" quest: the Leafy Mantle, which the quest places in Forest and Tropic biomes.[3]
- "Roller Skate" quest: the Roller Skate, which builds up movement speed while you keep running.[3]
- "Springy Boot" quest: the Springy Boot, which the quest places in Mountain biomes.[3]
- "Cut Glass Boot" quest: the Cut Glass Boot, which lets you walk on liquids you have stored in it.[3]
Nether relics
These quests follow "The Nether", except the Golden Tooth, which follows the Piglin Mask quest.[3]
- "Shield of Retaliation" quest: the Shield of Retaliation, a parry-style relic. Its ability blocks the next instance of damage for a short window, and failing to block leaves you more vulnerable.[3]
- "Reflective Necklace" quest: the Reflective Necklace, which can store part of the damage you take in orbs and launch them at your target when you attack.[3]
- "Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins" quest: the Ring of the Seven Deadly Sins, which has 7 abilities, each with a blessing and a cost.[3]
- "Sphere of Self-Sacrifice" quest: the Sphere of Self-Sacrifice, which trades part of your maximum health for regeneration over time.[3]
- "Ghostly Mantle" quest: the Ghostly Mantle, which has 3 abilities, including a Spectral Escape that negates a killing attack.[3]
- "Piglin Mask" quest: the Piglin Mask, which makes piglins stop attacking you on sight.[3]
- "Golden Tooth" quest: the Golden Tooth. It unlocks after the Piglin Mask quest, and the Mask's Looting ability is what makes defeated enemies drop it. You can trade it to piglins or melt it into gold.[3]
End relics
These quests all follow "The End".[3]
- "Glitchy Mantle" quest: the Glitchy Mantle, which has 3 abilities, including walking on air like scaffolding.[3]
- "Kinetic Belt" quest: the Kinetic Belt, which raises your amulet limit and lets you glide. Wear it with the Jellyfish Necklace and you leave a trail of electric chains while gliding.[3]
- "Chorus Staff" quest: the Chorus Staff, which teleports you a short distance forward using charges that slowly regenerate.[3]
- "Clot of Time" quest: the Clot of Time, which lets you rewind your movement for a few seconds while you hold the use key.[3]
- "Midnight Mantle" quest: the Midnight Mantle, which has 4 abilities and gets stronger the closer the Moon is to full.[3]
Unverified The quest data I have doesn't show any rewards for these quests, so I can't tell you what completing them gives you.
What changed in Relics between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Relics 0.12.8. The mod has been in the pack since 2.25 or earlier, and the pack changelogs show it being updated many times since.[2]
The pack changelogs only record which version the pack moved to. They don't say what changed inside each update, so this section is a timeline of version bumps and not a list of new features or balance changes.[6][7]
Version timeline
- 2.26: Relics went from 0.10.2 to 0.10.3.[8]
- 2.31: Relics went from 0.10.3.2 to 0.10.4.[9]
- 2.32: Relics went from 0.10.4 to 0.10.5.[10]
- 2.39: Relics went from 0.10.5.4 to 0.10.6.0.[11]
- 2.40: Relics went from 0.10.6.0 to 0.10.7.2.[12]
- 4.7: Relics went from 0.10.7.6 back to 0.10.7.5, so the pack rolled the mod back one step. Version 5.5 later moved it forward again, from 0.10.7.5 to 0.10.7.7.[13][14]
- 6.2: Relics went from 0.10.7.8 to 0.11.9, a bigger jump than the usual small bumps.[15]
- 7.0: Relics went from 0.11.14 to 0.12.4, another bigger jump.[7]
- 7.1: Relics went from 0.12.4 to 0.12.8, the version you get in 8.1.[2][6]
Between those milestones there were smaller bumps. Version 6.4 moved from 0.11.10 to 0.11.12, 6.5 moved to 0.11.13, and 6.6 moved to 0.11.14.[16][17][18]
Unverified What actually changed in each Relics update (new relics, balance tweaks, fixes) is unverified. No changelogs for the shipped jars are available, so check the mod's own release notes before relying on any specific change.
