Ad Astra is a mod in All the Mods 10 8.3, where it is version 1.16.26. Live long and prosper, Ad Astra! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Ad Astra?

1 part

Ad Astra is a space mod focused on technology, travel and exploration. You build rockets, wear space suits and set up bases on other worlds. This pack includes Ad Astra 1.16.19 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[1][2]

The mod has five celestial bodies across two solar systems: the Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury and Glacio. You get four rocket tiers for interplanetary travel, a rover for rough alien terrain, and over 250 building blocks for decorating your builds. There is also an in-game guidebook that explains the progression.[1]

How the progression flows

  • Energy comes first. It is used in all machines, and the coal generator is the most basic way to make it.[3]
  • Steel is made in an etrionic blast furnace by combining iron and coal, and it is the main material of your first rocket.[4]
  • The Moon is where you find Desh, which is used for advanced machines, space stations and the tier two rocket.[5]
  • Mars is where you mine ostrum to get to Venus and Mercury.[6]
  • Venus and Mercury need a netherite space suit, or you will burn to death. There you gather Calorite for the ultimate rocket.[7][8]
  • With enough Calorite for a tier four rocket, you can leave this solar system and head to Glacio in Proxima Centauri.[9]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest in this pack's quest book that involves Ad Astra, so its chapter, group and position, and whether the ATM Star path uses it, are not confirmed.

How do you get started with Ad Astra?

7 parts

Your first big goal in Ad Astra is to build a rocket, fly to the moon and get back home safely. Here is the order I'd tackle things in this pack.[10]

Get power with a Coal Generator

Energy is the core resource of the mod, and all machines use it. The simplest source is the Coal Generator, which burns things like wood or coal. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[3][11]

Make plates with a Compressor

Once you have energy, craft a Compressor. It presses ingots and blocks into plates, which many later recipes need. The pack changed this recipe too.[11][12]

Steel from the Etrionic Blast Furnace

Next up is the Etrionic Blast Furnace, which has two modes: blasting and alloying. Steel is made in it by combining iron and coal, giving 1 steel ingot per iron and coal. Steel is essential for most recipes and is the main material of your first rocket.[4]

Rocket parts, NASA Workbench and launch pad

A rocket needs a cone, plates, fins, tanks and an engine. You put them together in a NASA workbench, a workbench made just for rockets. To place the finished rocket you also need a launch pad, with the rocket going in the center.[13]

Fuel

Oil spouts over the ocean surface, and it is non-renewable, so collect plenty. You need at least six buckets for a launch and return. Craft a fuel refinery, power it, and put the oil in the left slot to refine it into fuel.[14]

Shift-click the rocket to open its inventory. Put three buckets of fuel in the input slot and the other three in the rocket's inventory for the return trip.[14]

Oxygen

The moon has no oxygen, so you need an oxygenated space suit and a good supply. Craft an oxygen loader and put water in the left tank to convert it into oxygen. Repeat until you have enough, then collect it in a bucket, your spacesuit or a gas tank.[15]

Pre-launch checklist

To get home from the moon you need a launch pad and three buckets of fuel, and both must be in the rocket's inventory every time you launch. Also bring several full gas tanks, plenty of food, weapons and tools. Pack soul torches or glowstone, because normal torches burn out.[16]

Watch out: On the moon, placed water freezes and lit blocks like torches break. Don't count on a bucket of water or a normal torch up there.[5]

Underground on the moon you'll find Desh, the next major resource. It is used for advanced machines, space stations and the tier two rocket.[5]

How does Ad Astra work?

5 parts

Energy is the core resource of Ad Astra, and nearly everything else (oxygen, fuel, plates, steel) is made by machines that run on it. Here's how those systems fit together, so you can plan a base that doesn't fall apart on the Moon.[3]

Generating and storing energy

Energy is used in all machines and is required for everything. The most basic generator is the Coal Generator, which burns burnable resources like wood or coal.[3][17]

The Solar Panel is an upgraded, self-reliant version of the coal generator and produces more energy per tick. How much it makes depends on the planet's distance from the sun and on fog, so it works best close to the sun. It also does better in orbit, where no atmosphere blocks the light. Open its GUI to see how much it's producing in the current world.[18]

For bulk storage, use the Energizer. It stores 2 million energy and keeps that energy when you break it. To charge an item, power the energizer and right-click it with the item. That's also how you recharge a jet suit.[19][20]

For portable power, the Etrionic Capacitor goes in a machine's energy slot. Hold right-click to spread its energy into your inventory. It has two modes: Sequential hands out energy one item at a time, and Round Robin spreads it evenly. Sneak and right-click to switch modes.[21]

Moving energy and fluids

Cables carry energy over long distances and come in steel and desh variants. Desh has the higher transfer rate. With a wrench you can set a cable to extend in certain directions or disconnect from nodes in the network.[22]

Cables aren't solid blocks, so they can't seal a structure. That stops oxygen distributors and gravity normalizers from working. The Cable Duct is a full block that works like a cable but doesn't leak. Use it wherever power has to cross a sealed wall.[17][22]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default, so use this one rather than other guides.

Fluid pipes are the fluid version of cables. Right-click a pipe with a wrench to cycle its mode through none, normal, insert and extract. The in-game guide says pipes set to insert receive fluid from the network, while pipes set to extract pump fluid into it. Fluid pipes also have a duct block for passing fluids in and out of sealed structures.[17][23]

Gas Tanks are the portable option. Despite the name "oxygen tank", they can hold any fluid. Hold right-click to distribute their contents into items in your inventory, with a bias towards armor.[21]

Processing machines

  • Compressor: presses ingots and blocks into plates, which many recipes need.[12][17]
  • Etrionic Blast Furnace: an energy-powered upgrade of the blast furnace with 4 slots for 4x efficiency. It has two modes, blasting and alloying. Steel comes from alloying iron and coal, giving 1 steel ingot per iron and coal.[4][17]
  • Fuel Refinery: power it, put oil in the left slot, and it refines the oil into fuel. Oil is non-renewable, so collect plenty.[14][17]
  • Cryo Freezer: turns an ice shard into 25 mB of Cryo Fuel. It also accepts ice, packed ice and blue ice. Cryo Fuel is 3 times as efficient as rocket fuel, and one bucket can launch a rocket. Because you need a return trip, make at least two buckets.[17][24]
  • NASA Workbench: the special workbench for assembling rockets once you have the cone, plates, fins, tanks and engine.[13][17]
Watch out: Cryo Fuel damages anything inside it when placed, like lava, and it freezes water. Don't spill it near your base.[24]

Oxygen, sealing and gravity

Oxygen is extracted from water. In an Oxygen Loader, put water in the left tank and it converts into oxygen. You can then collect the oxygen in a bucket, a space suit or a gas tank.[15][17]

The Oxygen Distributor works like a loader, but it releases the oxygen into the air of a sealed room instead of handing it to you. Each distributor supports up to 6,000 blocks, and you can add more distributors if you need more. Click "show" in its GUI to see whether the room is highlighted, which means oxygen is being distributed. The GUI also warns you if there's a hole. To run it indefinitely, use a Water Pump. Put an infinite water source below, place the pump above one of the water blocks, and put the distributor next to the pump. Power both of them.[17][25]

Oxygen still needs to flow inside your base, so a closed door shouldn't trap it. Leave a one-block gap between walls or use a vent block. Sliding doors are 3x3 and seal oxygen when closed, so they suit airlocks. Shift-right-click one with a wrench to lock it, and a locked door can only be opened with redstone.[17][25][26]

Watch out: If a fully sealed structure gets a hole, it depressurizes rapidly. Entities inside are sucked out and die without a space suit, and the distributor quickly drains oxygen and power. Patch holes as soon as you can.[25]

The Gravity Normalizer creates artificial gravity in a sealed area. A slider sets the target from 0-G to 2-G. It uses a considerable amount of power, so skip it if your structure doesn't need it.[27]

The Oxygen Sensor gives you a redstone output for automation. It emits a signal when it detects oxygen, and shift-right-click inverts the signal. Right-clicking with a wrench changes what it detects: oxygen, safe temperature or normal gravity.[28]

Launch pad automation

The rocket must sit on a launch pad. If you power any part of the pad with redstone, it launches the rocket automatically once it's fueled. Shift-right-click the rocket to reach its fuel and inventory.[13][17]

Unverified The sources here don't give exact energy transfer rates for the steel and desh cables, the energy use or capacity of most machines, or any pack-specific machine settings. The pack has no config files for the mod, so check those values in-game (machine GUIs and tooltips) before you plan a big build around them.

How do you progress through Ad Astra?

6 parts

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Ad Astra, and the mod is not on the main quest path. The order below follows the mod's in-game guide and the in-pack recipes instead. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Ad Astra is a tiered climb. Each new metal unlocks a stronger rocket and a harder destination: steel for your first rocket, Desh for Mars, Ostrum for Venus and Mercury, and Calorite for a new solar system. Here is the path, step by step.[4][5][6][8][9][29][30]

Step 0: Power and plates

Energy runs every machine in the mod. The simplest source is the Coal Generator, which burns things like wood or coal. Next you want the Compressor, which presses ingots and blocks into plates. Plates go into a huge number of recipes. The pack changed both recipes, so use the ones below rather than what you remember from the base mod.[3][11][12]

Fuel and oxygen before you launch

  • Fuel: collect oil from the spouts over the ocean and refine it in a fuel refinery. You need at least six buckets for a launch and a return trip. Put three buckets in the rocket's input slot and the other three in its inventory for the way home.[14]
  • Better fuel: the Cryo Freezer turns an ice shard into 25 mB of Cryo Fuel. It also accepts ice, packed ice and blue ice. Cryo Fuel is much more efficient, and one bucket can launch a rocket. Bring at least two buckets, one for the launch and one for the return.[24]
  • Oxygen: there is none on the moon, so you need an oxygenated space suit and an ample oxygen supply. An oxygen loader extracts it from water.[15]
  • Return kit: always carry a launch pad and three buckets of fuel in the rocket, so you can get home from the moon.[16]

Tier 2: Desh and Mars

The moon's underground holds Desh. It is used for advanced machines, space stations and the tier two rocket. Finding it unlocks the trip to Mars. The Desh engine builds on the steel engine, and the Desh tank builds on the steel tank. The pack changed the Desh tank recipe.[5][11][29]

Tier 3: Ostrum, Venus and Mercury

On Mars your goal is to mine as much Ostrum as you can, because it gets you to Venus and Mercury. Before you go, craft a complete netherite space suit set and all the components of the tier three rocket. Without the suit or fire resistance you will burn to death very quickly.[6][7][30]

Tier 4: Calorite and Proxima Centauri

On the hot planets you gather Calorite to build the ultimate rocket. The Calorite engine builds on the Ostrum engine, and the Calorite tank builds on the Ostrum tank. The pack changed the Calorite tank recipe.[8][11][30]

With enough Calorite for a tier four rocket, you can leave this solar system. Your first stop in Proxima Centauri is Glacio, which is brutally cold but has oxygen, so you can survive there without a space suit. The guide says this is the end of the Ad Astra progression for now.[9]

Tip: Each rocket tier reuses the previous tier's engine and tank in its recipe, so you can't skip a metal. Keep spare steel, Desh and Ostrum parts as you go.[11]

How does Ad Astra work with other mods?

4 parts

Ad Astra doesn't live on its own in this pack. Most of the crossover comes from recipes that tie its planet materials into other mods' machines, many of them adjusted by the pack. Here's where to look when you want to automate space resources or fit them into your existing setup.[11]

Create: crushing planet ores

Create's crushing recipes have been changed by the pack to cover Ad Astra's ores. Deepslate ores such as Deepslate Desh Ore, Deepslate Ostrum Ore and Deepslate Calorite Ore crush into their raw metal, a Nugget of Experience and deepslate. Planet ores such as Moon Desh Ore, Mars Ostrum Ore and Venus Calorite Ore give the raw metal, the planet's cobblestone and an experience nugget.[11]

Ice shard ores and Moon Cheese Ore are covered too, giving Ice Shard or Cheese plus cobblestone. Ordinary iron, coal, diamond, gold, copper and lapis ores also have planet-specific crushing recipes. They return the local cobblestone, an experience nugget and the usual output, such as Iron Clump or Diamond.[11]

Suit modules and upgrades

The Ad Astra Giselle Addon adds crafting links to Mekanism and PneumaticCraft. On the Mekanism side you get a gravity normalizing module and a space breathing module for your MekaSuit. Both are built from Ad Astra gear and Mekanism parts.[11]

What changed in Ad Astra between versions?

There isn't much history to tell yet. The pack changelog for All the Mods 10 8.1 lists Ad Astra 1.16.19 as added in that release.[31]

The 8.1 mod list shows the file as adastra-1.21.1-1.16.19-neoforge.jar. It also says the mod was first included in 8.1 or earlier, so the pack data alone can't tell you whether an older release already shipped it.[2]

Unverified The mod's own changelog for 1.16.19 isn't available, so what changed inside Ad Astra itself, including any recipe or config differences from earlier versions, is unconfirmed. Check the in-game recipes and configs for this pack rather than assuming mod defaults. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
