What is Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate objective is total automation, and there's a long road before you get there. The pack ships version 2.2.25.[1][2]

It takes inspiration from GregTech but strips out the tedious parts. There's no nerfing of vanilla recipes or ore generation, no drawer full of crafting tools (just one optional tool that gives you the best material conversion ratios without machines), and no endless machine tiers. Instead you get an original overclock system that lets machines and multiblocks reach one craft per tick if you feed them enough upgrades and energy, plus a powerful pipe system so you can automate your setups very early.[1]

How the progression works

Progression splits into the Steam Age and everything after. In the Steam Age you build your first factories to produce the resources the second part needs, and the challenge is resource management and processing time optimisation. Most of those setups become obsolete once the Steam Age ends, so don't over-invest in them.[3]

Then comes the Electric Age, where you're strongly encouraged to automate every processing line. These setups are meant to be permanent because they can be continuously upgraded, and the overclock system makes production adapt automatically to your consumption. From there the in-game guide carries you through the Midgame, where you scale your factory up massively, and finally the Endgame.[3][4][5]

Your very first step is the Forge Hammer, which handles basic processing before you can make bronze.[6]

Watch out: Using Modern Industrialization alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage is strongly discouraged, as it makes your progress extremely slow and inefficient. Electric machines reach their full power when they run continuously.[3]

Quests in this pack

The pack tracks your progress with quests. Crafting the Forge Hammer completes a quest in "?", which unlocks three follow-ups: a quest in "?" for the Large Advanced Motor, a quest in "?" for the Uranium Quad Fuel Rod and a quest in "?" for the Blastproof Casing. There's also a quest in "?" in the basic tools chapter, which asks for the Quantum Sword.[7][8]

Tip: Keep a recipe viewer like EMI, JEI or REI installed so you can see Modern Industrialization's recipes in-game, and Jade is optional but helps a lot.[1]

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the whole point is total automation, and it splits its progression into a Steam Age for the early game and an Electric Age for everything after. Your early steam setups are meant to be temporary, so build them quickly and cheaply and don't fall in love with them.[1][3]

Before you touch anything, open the in-game guidebook and keep a recipe viewer handy, because almost every step in this mod is best learned by reading the recipe rather than guessing.[1][9]

Step one: the Forge Hammer

Your very first craft is the Forge Hammer. It handles the basic processing steps before you own a single machine, and it's also the first quest in the chapter, a quest in "?", which unlocks the rest of the mod's quest line.[6][7]

This pack changed the Forge Hammer recipe, so check it in-game rather than following older guides.

Put iron, copper or tin ore into the Forge Hammer and you get 2 raw ores per ore, and every raw ore smelts into an ingot. Crafting the Hammer tool on top of that improves the ratio and unlocks more recipes, at the cost of some durability.[6]

Step two: a Steam Mining Drill

Next, consider the Steam Mining Drill. It mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch, so the ores come out whole and go straight into the Forge Hammer for that doubled output. It's the single biggest early-game time saver.[6]

Tip: The drill needs both water and solid fuel. Right-click a water source to fill it, and right-click fuel items like coal onto it in your inventory. The fuel drains slowly as you mine.[6]

Step three: your first bronze

Bronze is the gateway to steam machines. Hammer copper and tin ingots or nuggets into dusts and tiny dusts, combine copper and tin into bronze dust, then smelt that into a bronze ingot. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust, and that a Mixer does this far more efficiently than hand crafting once you have one.[10][11]

Step four: steel and the jump to electricity

With bronze machines running, aim for a Coke Oven to start steel production. Macerate coke into Coke Dust, combine it with iron for Uncooked Steel Dust, and cook that in a Steam Blast Furnace built from the controller, 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches as the Coke Oven.[9][12]

After that, your first Steam Turbine converts steam into EU, at 1 EU per millibucket up to 32 mb every tick, and that's the doorway into the Electric Age. Crafting an Analog Circuit is the milestone that officially kicks it off.[9][13]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages running Modern Industrialization alongside on-demand automation mods like AE2 or Refined Storage, because its machines are designed to run continuously and on-demand crafting makes progress slow and inefficient.[3]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.41 guide

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and the progression splits into two parts: the Steam Age, where you build your first factories, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent. Electric machines work best when they run continuously, so this section walks through how machines, multiblocks, power, fluids and items fit together.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically sends steam to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam is worth 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 machines at once.[14]

Steam machines accept items, steam or other fluids from any side. You can lock a slot with the lock button in the interface so it only takes one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side, and you can enable auto-eject from the interface. Hoppers, pipes and other automation can still pull outputs from any side.[14]

A wrench rotates a machine with a right-click, and you rotate the output side by sneaking while you shift-click. Breaking a machine with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe for that.[14]

A water pump can feed your boiler automatically. Surround it horizontally with water blocks and it produces water for 1 EU/t, sending it to the machine on its output side. The Bronze Water Pump makes 1/8th of a bucket per adjacent water source every 5 seconds, so at most 1 bucket every 5 seconds.[15]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as bronze ones as long as their energy use stays at or below 4 EU/t. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier too.[16]

Multiblocks

Every multiblock is managed by a controller, but you usually don't interact with the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. The Coke Oven is the first multiblock the guide has you build: it needs an item input, an item output and a fluid input hatch, and it won't start if one is missing. A fluid output hatch for creosote is optional, and since creosote is a chanced output it is voided if there's no room.[17]

Tip: Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and structure errors. Hold a hatch to see where it can go. When the Coke Oven says Shape Valid, it's ready to run.[17]

The Large Steam Boiler is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings under three layers of Bronze Plated Bricks. The controller goes on the second layer, the two middle blocks are Bronze Pipe Machine Casings, and hatches go on the bottom layer. It produces 256 mb/t of steam when fully heated. 80% of any unconsumed heat is lost, so its efficiency drops when it isn't running near maximum output.[18]

The Electric Blast Furnace is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coils, and one more layer of Heatproof Machine Casings. The controller goes on the bottom layer, and hatches go on the top or bottom layer. It needs an Energy Input Hatch to work. An LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables, and an MV one only to MV cables.[19]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or through a Large Tank Hatch, which also opens the tank's menu when you right-click it. Don't break the controller or you lose all the stored fluid.[20]

The Distillation Tower gives one oil processing output per layer, while the Distillery gives only one. This pack's config caps the tower height at maxDistillationTowerHeight = 9.[21][22]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power to cables or machines on its output side. Every cable has a tier that decides how much it can carry and what it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV.[13]

Networks pull in at most 256 EU/t for LV cables, 1,024 EU/t for MV and 8,192 EU/t for HV. Cables have a small internal storage and there is no output limit, so an LV network can briefly deliver more than 256 EU/t. Transformers move power between tiers: a low-to-high Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[13]

Modern Industrialization cables can power blocks from other mods, but they are the only cables that can power Modern Industrialization machines. They can only extract energy from Modern Industrialization blocks.[23]

Electric machines work like steam machines but use electricity. They progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t, and electric multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock a machine manually by right-clicking it with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[24]

A Redstone Control Module lets redstone signals control electric machines and multiblocks. You configure it in your hand, then insert it into the machine or controller. An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps drawing EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull changes it to MV tier, so it then only accepts MV cables.[24][25]

For generation, the Diesel Generator produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. The HV Diesel Generator produces up to 1,024 EU/t, and the Large Diesel Generator reaches up to 16,384 EU/t. If you need constant power, liquid fuels in a Large Steam Boiler give roughly twice the energy of a Diesel Generator from the same fuel when fully heated.[26][27]

With a Pressurizer you can make HP steam, worth 8 EU per mb instead of 1. A Large Steam Turbine accepts both kinds and generates up to 16,384 EU/t, but it doesn't return the water. A Heat Exchanger recovers HP water for another cycle.[28]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket (1,000 mb), and directly connected pipes share their storage. Your fluid throughput per tick is bounded by the network's total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the transfer rates of the machines and tanks at the ends.[29]

Tanks only join the pipe network over a bidirectional connection, which is I/O in the menu or the double arrows on the pipe. Fluid pipes carry one fluid type, and by default they won't connect to empty pipes or blocks. A right-click on the pipe's center with the wrench forces a connection. Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect.[29][30]

Item handling and storage

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, but you can force a connection. They start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you add items to the filter or switch to blacklist. You have to configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Item pipes insert into higher priorities first, and this pack's config sets baseItemPipeTransfer to 16 items every few seconds. Motors can upgrade them.[22][30]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings and can camouflage pipes. Hold it in your offhand and it applies its settings to any Item Pipe you place.[31]

  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject. You can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[24]
  • The Configurable Tank is its fluid counterpart, with 9 configurable slots of 16 buckets each and auto-eject.[32]
  • Bronze tanks hold 4 buckets of fluid each, and bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[33]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it. You can also use it to dump a machine's fluid tank directly.[16]

The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts with Assemblers early, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[24]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using Modern Industrialization together with an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says this makes progress extremely slow and inefficient. This pack still has enableAe2Integration turned on.[3][22]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization is a ladder: each age unlocks the machines and materials you need to build the next one, and the in-game guide book walks you through it page by page. You start by hand-crafting, move to steam, convert steam into electricity, then scale up through oil, nuclear and finally quantum gear.[4][5][11][34][35]

The ages at a glance

  1. Steam Age: you combine copper and tin into bronze and use it to harness steam for automatic processing.[11]
  2. Electric Age: steam gets converted into a new kind of energy, so machines become far more complex and run much faster.[35]
  3. Advanced machines: aluminum opens up the Centrifuge, Chemical Reactor, Distillery and Electrolyzer, plus the Configurable Tank for fluid automation.[32]
  4. Midgame: once you have the basics of electricity and oil processing down, you have the infrastructure to scale the factory up massively.[4]
  5. Endgame: nuclear fission is only part of what quantum physics has to offer here.[5]
  6. Quantum tier: the Singularity powers the Quantum Upgrade, Quantum Sword, Quantum Armor, and storage that holds 2,147,483,647 stacks or buckets.[36]

Voltage is the real tier system

Alongside the ages, machines are gated by cable tier. Copper, silver and tin cables are Low Voltage, cupronickel and electrum are Medium Voltage, and so on up the chain. A cable network pulls at most 256 EU/t on LV, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV, and single-block electric machines will only connect to LV cables.[13]

Regular electric machines overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t and electric multiblocks are capped at 128 EU/t by default. You push past those caps with overclock upgrades placed in the machine's menu, and you can right-click a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull to move it up to MV tier, after which it only accepts MV cable connections.[19][24][25]

Tip: When you hit the Electric Age, automate Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts in Assemblers first. The guide book is blunt about it: doing that makes crafting electric machines basically free.[24]

The pack's quest path

The pack's quest book condenses the whole mod into a handful of milestones. Everything starts with the Forge Hammer in a quest in "?", which is your very first Modern Industrialization craft and the gate for the rest of the branch.[7]

The pack also asks for a Quantum Sword in a quest in "?", over in the tools chapter. In the mod's own words, the sword uses the raw power of the Schrödinger equation to instantly vaporize anything you hit with it, and the full Quantum Armor set makes you immune to all damage and grants creative flight, with each piece adding 25% to the chance of nullifying incoming damage.[8][36]

Watch out: The Quantum Sword recipe is one the pack has changed, so check it in-game rather than following the mod's default.[37]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

4 parts

Plenty of other mods plug into Modern Industrialization in this pack. Here are the connections that the in-pack recipes and quests actually show.[37]

Extended Industrialization machines

Extended Industrialization adds extra machines built from Modern Industrialization parts: the Electric Brewery, Electric Canning Machine, Electric Composter, Electric Bending Machine, Electric Alloy Smelter and Electric Farmer. Their recipes lean on Modern Industrialization parts such as Analog Circuit, Basic Machine Hull, Motor and Pump. The Steam Farmer and the steel machines use casings and rotors instead, for example Steel Machine Casing and Bronze Rotor.[37]

The pack changed the recipes for Steel Plated Bricks, the Bronze Bending Machine and the Bronze Composter compared with the mod's own versions. Both the crafting table and the assembler versions are changed.[37]

The steel versions of the bending machine and composter are upgrades of the bronze ones. You combine the bronze machine with a Steel Upgrade, either by hand or in a packer, and you can undo it with an unpacker.[37]

Quarry drills and AllTheOres

The pack adds its own quarry recipes for the Electric Quarry, and each one is tied to a drill tier. This is where Modern Industrialization meets AllTheOres, vanilla ores and Powah: higher drills unlock other ores.[37][38]

Unverified The quarry recipes shown here list only the drill and the ores it can yield. Output amounts and chances are not confirmed from the available sources.

Dusts, nuggets and the electrolyzer

The pack also adds Ender IO alloy smelting recipes that turn Modern Industrialization tiny dusts into AllTheOres nuggets. They cover bronze, copper, electrum, invar, iridium, lead, nickel, silver, steel and tin. Another recipe smelts a Magnetic Steel Rod into an Steel Rod.[37]

The Modern Industrialization Electrolyzer has a pack-added recipe that splits Dirty Aluminum Dust into Aluminum Dust, Oxygen and Titanium Tiny Dust.[37]

Endgame crafts and quests

Several of the pack's endgame crafts need a Modern Industrialization item alongside items from many other mods. The Improbable Probability Device needs a Blastproof Casing, the Nexium Emitter needs a Large Advanced Motor, and Philosopher's Fuel needs a Uranium Quad Fuel Rod.[37]

Each of them comes after a quest in "?", which asks for the Forge Hammer.[7]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization shows up in two quest chapters in this pack. Every quest involved is untitled in the quest files, so they are referenced below by their ids. Each one has a single item task.[7][8]

Chapter: chapter_2_the_star

This chapter has four Modern Industrialization quests, and they form a small tree. You start with a quest in "?", which asks for the Forge Hammer. Nothing in the source lists a prerequisite for it, so it is the entry point for this group.[7]

Once that quest is done, three more open up. The source lists each of them as coming after the Forge Hammer quest and does not rank them against each other, so you can take them in any order:[7]

Chapter: basic_tools

This chapter has one Modern Industrialization quest: a quest in "?", which asks for the Quantum Sword. The source lists no prerequisite for it.[8]

Tip: Start with the Forge Hammer quest in chapter_2_the_star. The motor, fuel rod and casing quests all come after it.[7]

Unverified The quest files give no titles, descriptions or rewards for these quests, so what each one pays out is unverified.

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.41 guide

Modern Industrialization keeps all its settings in config/modern_industrialization.toml. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, exactly as this pack sets them.[22]
