What is Refined Storage?
2 parts
Refined Storage (RS, or RS2) is a mass storage mod built around a network. This pack ships Refined Storage 2.0.9 for NeoForge, so everything here describes that version. If you're tired of chest walls and want one place to see and pull all your items, this is the mod for you.[1][2]
Everything starts with the Controller. It's the core of your network, and once it has power, every RS component connected to it comes to life. The pack's quest "Refined Storage" quest points you to it first, and most of the other Refined Storage quests unlock after that one.[2]
The basic building blocks
- Storage: put your disks into a Disk Drive, which has 8 slots for storage disks. If you'd rather keep your existing chests, the External Storage lets the network look inside containers like chests, barrels and drawers.[2]
- Access: the Grid is how you view and use what's in your network.[2]
- Connections: early on you can place blocks right next to each other, but Cable lets you extend the network and is a staple of any large setup.[2]
- Tools: the Wrench rotates blocks and breaks Refined Storage covers when you sneak and right-click.[2]
Where it goes from there
Once the basics are running, the quests move into automation. The Constructor places a chosen block in the direction it faces. The Regulator Upgrade keeps a set amount of an item in a machine, for example 64 Coal in a Furnace. Pair it with the Autocrafting Upgrade and an Autocrafter, and the network can craft more when you run low.[2]
For bigger bases, the Network Transmitter and Network Receiver link separate networks together, so you don't need a huge run of cables. The Security Manager lets you set permissions for the players on your network.[2]
Unverified The sources I have don't show Refined Storage on the ATM Star quest path, so I can't say where it fits in that route.
How do you get started with Refined Storage?
5 parts
Refined Storage is a network-based mass storage mod, and the whole setup grows from a handful of blocks. Here is the order to build them in, following the pack's quest chapter.[2]
Step one: the Controller
Start with the Controller. It's the core of your network: once it is provided with power, it gives life to every connected Refined Storage component. The first quest in the chapter, "Refined Storage" quest, asks for exactly this.[2][3]

Step two: Cables
Next, make some Cable. Early on you can connect blocks just by placing them next to each other, but Cables let you extend the network outwards. They are a staple of any large network. See the quest "Cables" quest.[2][3]

Step three: a Disk Drive and storage disks
To store items you need disks, and disks go inside a Disk Drive attached to your network. One Disk Drive has 8 slots for disks.[2]

A disk is made by combining a Storage Housing with a storage part of the size you want. The 1k Storage Part comes first in the quest chain, and the quests then lead on to the 4k Storage Part and the 16k Storage Part. A Storage Disk won't despawn if you drop it in the world.[2]

Step four: a Grid to see it all
Storing items virtually is great, but you need a way to look at them. The Grid is the most basic display for the items in your network. It's covered in the quest "The Grid" quest.[2]

Step five: the Wrench
Grab the Wrench too. Sneak and right-click with it to rotate blocks or to break Refined Storage covers. See the quest "Wrench" quest.[2]
From here the quest book branches out. Importers, exporters and upgrades follow the Cables quest, while wireless access and autocrafting follow the Grid quest.[2]
How does Refined Storage work?
7 parts
Refined Storage is a storage network: Controllers give the network energy, and the devices you attach to it each do one job. You connect them with Cable or by placing them against each other. Here is how the pieces work together in this pack.[3]
Power and the Controller
You can use one or several Controllers to provide your network with energy. If a Controller is switched off by its redstone mode, the network can't use it as an energy source. The pack raises controller.energyCapacity to 50,000, up from the mod default of 1,000, so a Controller holds far more than in a plain install.[3][4]
Every device draws its own energy, and the pack leaves these at the mod defaults. Cables cost nothing (cable.energyUsage is 0), so the cost comes from the devices you attach. A few examples:[4]
- Disk Drive: a base of 10 (diskDrive.energyUsage) plus 4 for each disk inside (diskDrive.energyUsagePerDisk).[4]
- Autocrafter: a base of 4 (autocrafter.energyUsage) plus 2 for each pattern it holds (autocrafter.energyUsagePerPattern).[4]
- Grid: 10 (grid.energyUsage).[4]
- Crafting Grid: 14 (craftingGrid.energyUsage).[4]
- Pattern Grid: 14 (patternGrid.energyUsage).[4]
- Network Transmitter: 32 (networkTransmitter.energyUsage).[4]
- Network Receiver: 8 (networkReceiver.energyUsage).[4]
- Importer: 2 (importer.energyUsage) and Exporter: 2 (exporter.energyUsage).[4]
- Constructor: 3 (constructor.energyUsage) and Destructor: 3 (destructor.energyUsage).[4]
Connecting the network
You can link devices with Cable, or simply place devices directly against each other. A Relay lets you switch whole sections of the network on or off and start new branches. Each side of a Relay costs 8 (relay.inputNetworkEnergyUsage and relay.outputNetworkEnergyUsage).[3][4]
If you don't want a cable run, a Network Transmitter, a Network Receiver and a Network Card can add components to your network without cables.[3]
Storage: disks, drives and blocks
Items and fluids are stored on Storage Disks and Fluid Storage Disks, which live in a Disk Drive. Storage Blocks and Fluid Storage Blocks are also part of the pack, and each tier draws its own energy:[3][4]
- 1k Storage Block: 2 (storageBlock.1kEnergyUsage).[4]
- 4k Storage Block: 4 (storageBlock.4kEnergyUsage).[4]
- 16k Storage Block: 6 (storageBlock.16kEnergyUsage).[4]
- 64k Storage Block: 8 (storageBlock.64kEnergyUsage).[4]
- 64B Fluid Storage Block: 2 (fluidStorageBlock.64bEnergyUsage).[4]
- 256B Fluid Storage Block: 4 (fluidStorageBlock.256bEnergyUsage).[4]
- 1024B Fluid Storage Block: 6 (fluidStorageBlock.1024bEnergyUsage).[4]
- 4096B Fluid Storage Block: 8 (fluidStorageBlock.4096bEnergyUsage).[4]
- The creative storage block uses 16 (storageBlock.creativeEnergyUsage), and so does the creative fluid storage block (fluidStorageBlock.creativeEnergyUsage).[4]
Each storage has an access mode. Insert/extract lets the network do both. Extract-only means the network can only take resources out. Insert-only means it can only put resources in, though the contents still show up in a Grid.[3]
Higher tiers are built from the tier below. For example, the 16k Storage Part is crafted from the 4k Storage Part, and the 1024B Fluid Storage Part from the 256B Fluid Storage Part. If you already have a Storage Housing, you can turn a part into a finished disk without the full disk recipe. Here are the 1k examples:[5]

Moving resources in and out
- Importer: brings resources from a target inventory into the network. Its filter can work as an allowlist or a blocklist.[3]
- Exporter: pulls the filtered resources out of the network.[3]
- Interface: imports and exports at the same time.[3]
- Constructor: places blocks from the network into the world.[3]
- Destructor: breaks blocks in the world and sends them into the network. Its filter can allow or block specific blocks.[3]
- Disk Interface: transfers resources between the network and storage disks, in either direction depending on its transfer mode, with its own allowlist or blocklist filter.[3]
- External Storage: lets the network use a block such as a chest as storage.[3]
- Detector: uses redstone to check for a resource in the network.[3]
- Storage Monitor: lets you view, insert or extract resources.[3]
Filters have a fuzzy mode. With it off, the filter must match exactly. With it on, the filter ignores components.[3]
Autocrafting
You create patterns in a Pattern Grid and store them in Autocrafters. For processing patterns, the input slots are what gets extracted from the network into the target inventory. The output slots are what must come back for the task to count as successful. In the Pattern Grid, fuzzy mode lets pattern inputs use alternatives.[3]
If one Autocrafter faces another, they form a chain, so more patterns can feed a single machine. The Autocrafter Manager gathers your patterns in one interface. An Autocrafter only shows up there if you enable its visibility option. The manager can search pattern inputs, pattern outputs or Autocrafter names. This pack sets autocrafterManager.searchMode to ALL and autocrafterManager.viewType to VISIBLE.[3][4]
An Autocrafting Upgrade in an Interface, Exporter or Constructor makes that device autocraft resources on demand. The upgrade costs 8 (upgrade.autocraftingUpgradeUsage). An Autocrafting Monitor shows task progress. autocraftingNotification is on in this pack, and the preview screen can notify you when a task finishes.[3][4]
Upgrades, range and wireless
Upgrades improve various devices, and each one has its own energy cost in this pack's config:[3][4]
- Speed Upgrade: 4 (upgrade.speedUpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Range Upgrade: 8 (upgrade.rangeUpgradeEnergyUsage), with a range of 8 (upgrade.rangeUpgradeRange).[4]
- Stack Upgrade: 16 (upgrade.stackUpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Regulator Upgrade: 16 (upgrade.regulatorUpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Silk Touch Upgrade: 16 (upgrade.silkTouchUpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Fortune I Upgrade: 10 (upgrade.fortune1UpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Fortune II Upgrade: 12 (upgrade.fortune2UpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
- Fortune III Upgrade: 14 (upgrade.fortune3UpgradeEnergyUsage).[4]
Wireless devices carry their own energy, and the pack keeps the mod defaults for them. A Portable Grid reads disks without needing a storage network.[3][4]
- Wireless Grid: a capacity of 1,000 (wirelessGrid.energyCapacity), and 5 to open it (wirelessGrid.openEnergyUsage).[4]
- Wireless Autocrafting Monitor: a capacity of 1,000 (wirelessAutocraftingMonitor.energyCapacity), and 5 to open it (wirelessAutocraftingMonitor.openEnergyUsage).[4]
- Portable Grid: a capacity of 1,000 (portableGrid.energyCapacity), and 5 to open it (portableGrid.openEnergyUsage).[4]
- Wireless Transmitter: a base range of 16 (wirelessTransmitter.baseRange).[4]
Security and Grids
An active Security Manager blocks all operations on the network by default. You then add Security Cards to permit or deny specific operations for each player.[3]
In a Grid, you can search by mod with '@', by tag with '#' and by tooltip with '$'. This pack sorts by QUANTITY (grid.sortingType), in ASCENDING order (grid.sortingDirection), and shows ALL resources (grid.viewType).[3][4]
How do you progress through Refined Storage?
7 parts
In this pack, Refined Storage progression follows the quest chapter, which works as a branching tree that grows out of one starting point. You begin with the Controller, then branch into storage, interfaces, wireless access and autocrafting. Here's the order the quests lead you through.[2]
Step 1: The core network
The chapter opens with "Refined Storage" quest, where you craft the Controller. It's the core of your network, and when it's powered it brings every connected component to life. The other quests in the chapter come after this one.[2]

From the Controller, the quests branch out. "Cables" quest has you craft the Cable. Early on you can connect blocks just by placing them next to each other, but Cables let you extend the network. You'll also get the Wrench ("Wrench" quest) to rotate blocks and break Refined Storage covers.[2]
Step 2: Storage and your first Grid
Next, the Disk Drive (a quest in "Refined Storage") holds the disks that store your items, with 8 slots for Storage Disks. A disk is a Storage Part combined with an Storage Housing, and that's what a quest in "Refined Storage" covers. To actually see your items you need the Grid from "The Grid" quest.[2]

Once you have the Disk Drive, the Disk Interface (a quest in "Refined Storage") lets you move items and fluids from one disk to another.[2]
Storage part tiers
The quests give you two storage lines, and each one is a chain you unlock in order after the Storage Housing quest.[2]
- Item parts: 1k Storage Part, then 4k Storage Part, then 16k Storage Part, then 64k Storage Part.[2]
- Fluid parts: 64B Fluid Storage Part, then 256B Fluid Storage Part, then 1024B Fluid Storage Part, then 4096B Fluid Storage Part.[2]

This is the entry point for item storage, and the larger parts have their own in-pack recipes.
If you'd rather not build disks yet, the External Storage (a quest in "Refined Storage") connects an existing container to your network. That works for chests, barrels and drawers, so it's a good shortcut when you have chests scattered around.[2]
Step 3: Interfaces and upgrades
Several quests unlock right after Cables. These are the blocks that let your network interact with the world.[2]
- Importer pulls items out of a connected block, such as finished products from a Furnace, and can be filtered.[2]
- Exporter pushes items from your network into a block, such as ores or fuel into a Furnace, and can also be filtered.[2]
- Constructor places a designated block in the direction it is pointed, and you pick the block in its GUI.[2]
- Destructor breaks the block it's attached to, and can be set to whitelist blocks.[2]
- Storage Monitor displays the current number of an item within your network, as shown while it is connected to your system.[2]
Upgrades come next. "Speeding Everything Up!" quest covers the Speed Upgrade and the Stack Upgrade, which the quest says moves a stack of items at a time rather than just one. "Regulator Upgrade" quest adds the Regulator Upgrade, which the quest says maintains a certain amount of items within a block or machine. Its example is keeping 64 Coal in a Furnace. The same quest also covers the Autocrafting Upgrade, which the quest calls the Crafting Upgrade. It tells an interface to request a craft if the item runs out and the recipe is in an Autocrafter.[2]

"Destructor Upgrades" quest covers the Silk Touch Upgrade and the Fortune upgrades for your Destructor. Any one of the three Fortune upgrades is enough to complete the quest.[2]
Step 4: Crafting Grid, wireless and portable access
After the Grid, the quest tree splits into several branches. "The Better Grid" quest upgrades you to the Crafting Grid, which adds a crafting interface. The Portable Grid lets you work with a Storage Disk without being connected to a network.[2]
For wireless access, start with the Wireless Transmitter from "Wireless Access" quest, which the quest says you need in order to use Wireless Grids. The Wireless Grid follows in the quest tree and lets you access your network storage wirelessly. To extend the signal, "Increasing Wifi Range" quest introduces the Range Upgrade. A Wireless Transmitter can only hold 4 of them in total.[2]

Step 5: Autocrafting
Autocrafting is the deepest branch, and it builds in this order.[2]
- Pattern ("Autocrafting" quest): Patterns store recipes so your network knows how to craft things.[2]
- Pattern Grid ("Pattern Grid" quest): this is where you imprint recipes onto blank Patterns.[2]
- Autocrafter ("Autocrafter" quest): you put Patterns in here, then request crafts from your Grid.[2]
- Autocrafter Manager ("Managing Autocrafters" quest): lets you access all your Autocrafters from one block.[2]
- Autocrafting Monitor ("Monitoring Autocrafting" quest): when attached to your system, it shows the items currently in your crafting queue, and you need it if you want to cancel crafts that aren't working.[2]
- Wireless Autocrafting Monitor (a quest in "Refined Storage"): comes after both Wireless Access and Monitoring Autocrafting, and lets you access your network crafting queue wirelessly.[2]

Extras: security and linking networks
The Security Manager ("Security Manager" quest) lets you set permissions per player using Security Cards. With no cards present, everyone has access to all permissions. When your system outgrows the Controller limit, "Grid Networks" quest introduces the Network Transmitter and Network Receiver. They connect separate networks wirelessly, such as a remote mob farm, using a Network Card.[2]

How does Refined Storage work with other mods?
5 parts
Refined Storage connects to other mods in this pack mostly through crafting recipes, plus a few quests that mention neighbouring mods. Here's where the links are.[2][5]
Elite and Ultra network blocks
The cabletiers items are upgraded versions of the core network blocks: Autocrafter, Constructor, Destructor, Disk Interface, Exporter, Importer and Interface. The pack changes all of these recipes. Each Elite block starts from the matching Refined Storage block plus an Advanced Processor, and each Ultra block starts from the matching Elite block.[5]

The Elite recipes also need an iron storage block, and the Ultra recipes need a diamond storage block. Examples are Elite Exporter and Ultra Importer.[5]
Bigger storage with Extra Disks items
The extradisks items continue the Refined Storage storage line with larger item, fluid and chemical parts, disks and blocks. The recipes build directly on Refined Storage items. For example, the 256k Storage Part is crafted from a 64k Storage Part, and the 16384B Fluid Storage Part is crafted from a 4096B Fluid Storage Part.[5]

What the quests mention
- The Destructor quest suggests setting a whitelist to automate processes such as making Casings in Create. See a quest in "Refined Storage".[2]
- The External Storage quest says it can read chests, barrels, drawers and drawer controllers, among others. See a quest in "Refined Storage".[2]
- The Regulator Upgrade quest uses a Mystical Agriculture Coal Essence setup as its example. The Regulator Upgrade keeps a machine stocked, and the Autocrafting Upgrade lets the network craft more when it runs out. See "Regulator Upgrade" quest.[2]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Refined Storage?
4 parts
Refined Storage has a single quest chapter in the pack, also called Refined Storage. It starts with one quest and then branches out, so you can follow whichever branch matches what you're building. Every quest asks you to obtain the item it is about. The questbook text works as a short tutorial for each block.[2]
The starting point
Everything begins with "Refined Storage" quest, which asks for the Controller. It's the core of your network, and it gives life to all the connected components once it has power.[2]
Four quests unlock straight after it: "Cables" quest for the Cable, a quest in "Refined Storage" for the Disk Drive, "Wrench" quest for the Wrench, and "Security Manager" quest for the Security Manager. "Grid Networks" quest also unlocks here and asks for both the Network Transmitter and the Network Receiver.[2]
Cables branch: interfaces and upgrades
Once you've done the Cables quest, a whole set of automation quests opens up:[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Importer, which pulls items out of a connected block.[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Exporter, which pushes items from your network into a block.[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Constructor, which places a block you designate.[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Destructor, which breaks blocks. "Destructor Upgrades" quest follows it and asks for the Silk Touch Upgrade plus any one of the Fortune upgrades: Fortune 1 Upgrade, Fortune 2 Upgrade or Fortune 3 Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the External Storage, which lets your network read chests, barrels, drawers and similar containers.[2]
- a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Storage Monitor, which shows how many of an item your network holds.[2]
- "Speeding Everything Up!" quest asks for the Speed Upgrade and the Stack Upgrade.[2]
- "Regulator Upgrade" quest asks for the Regulator Upgrade and the Autocrafting Upgrade. The quest's example is keeping 64 Coal in a Furnace through an Exporter.[2]
Disk Drive branch: storage and grids
a quest in "Refined Storage" explains that the Disk Drive has 8 slots for Storage Disks. Three quests unlock after it: a quest in "Refined Storage" (the Storage Housing), "The Grid" quest (the Grid) and a quest in "Refined Storage" (the Disk Interface).[2]
The Storage Housing quest leads into two part chains. The item chain runs "1k Storage Part" quest (1k), "4k Storage Part" quest (4k), "16k Storage Part" quest (16k), then "64k Storage Part" quest (64k). The fluid chain runs "64B Fluid Storage Part" quest (64B), "256B Fluid Storage Part" quest (256B), "1024B Fluid Storage Part" quest (1024B), then "4096B Fluid Storage Part" quest (4096B).[2]
Grid branch: wireless and autocrafting
The Grid quest unlocks four more. "The Better Grid" quest asks for the Crafting Grid. a quest in "Refined Storage" asks for the Portable Grid. "Wireless Access" quest asks for the Wireless Transmitter. "Autocrafting" quest asks for the Pattern.[2]
Wireless Access leads to a quest in "Refined Storage" for the Wireless Grid and "Increasing Wifi Range" quest for the Range Upgrade. The Wireless Transmitter can only hold 4 of those upgrades in total.[2]
The autocrafting line goes Autocrafting, then "Pattern Grid" quest for the Pattern Grid. From the Pattern Grid you can continue to "Autocrafter" quest for the Autocrafter, and then to "Managing Autocrafters" quest for the Autocrafter Manager. The other option is "Monitoring Autocrafting" quest for the Autocrafting Monitor.[2]
The last quest in the chapter, a quest in "Refined Storage", asks for the Wireless Autocrafting Monitor. It needs both Wireless Access and Monitoring Autocrafting to be done first.[2]
Which Refined Storage config options matter?
4 parts
Good news: the Refined Storage config in this pack is almost entirely stock. Only one value in the file is flagged as changed from the mod default, and it's the one you'll notice first when you build your first network.[4]
The one value the pack changed
controller.energyCapacity is set to 50,000 in this pack. The mod default is 1,000. So the controller can hold far more energy than you'd get in a stock install.[4]
Energy usage is all at mod defaults
Every other energy setting matches the mod default, so you can plan your power budget from these numbers. Cables are free: cable.energyUsage is 0. Here are the ones you'll likely run into early:[4]
- diskDrive.energyUsage is 10, plus diskDrive.energyUsagePerDisk at 4 for each disk.[4]
- grid.energyUsage is 10, while craftingGrid.energyUsage and patternGrid.energyUsage are both 14.[4]
- autocrafter.energyUsage is 4, plus autocrafter.energyUsagePerPattern at 2 for each pattern.[4]
- importer.energyUsage and exporter.energyUsage are both 2.[4]
- Storage blocks scale with size: storageBlock.1kEnergyUsage is 2, storageBlock.4kEnergyUsage is 4, storageBlock.16kEnergyUsage is 6 and storageBlock.64kEnergyUsage is 8.[4]
Wireless and range settings
wirelessTransmitter.baseRange is 16 and upgrade.rangeUpgradeRange is 8, both at mod default.[4]
The handheld energy buffers are unchanged too: wirelessGrid.energyCapacity is 1,000, wirelessAutocraftingMonitor.energyCapacity is 1,000 and portableGrid.energyCapacity is 1,000. The controller is the only energy buffer the pack boosted.[4]
Interface options
The file also holds display and behavior settings. The pack leaves the grid sorting on grid.sortingType = QUANTITY with grid.sortingDirection = ASCENDING, and grid.viewType = ALL. screenSize is STRETCH with maxRowsStretch at 256.[4]
smoothScrolling, grid.detailedTooltip and autocraftingNotification are on. searchBoxAutoSelected, grid.rememberSearchQuery and grid.largeFont are off. craftingGrid.craftingMatrixCloseBehavior is NONE, so closing a crafting grid doesn't clear the matrix to the network or your inventory.[4]
What changed in Refined Storage between versions?
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Refined Storage 2.0.9. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.43 or earlier, and it moved from beta builds to stable releases along the way. Here is every pack release where its version changed.[1][6]
- All the Mods 10 2.43: Refined Storage was added to the pack as a 2.0.0 beta build.[6]
- All the Mods 10 4.5: updated to a newer 2.0.0 beta build.[7]
- All the Mods 10 4.6: updated to a newer 2.0.0 beta build again.[8]
- All the Mods 10 4.7: updated to another newer 2.0.0 beta build.[9]
- All the Mods 10 4.11: updated to a later 2.0.0 beta build.[10]
- All the Mods 10 4.12: moved from a 2.0.0 beta to the full 2.0.0 release.[11]
- All the Mods 10 6.0: updated from 2.0.0 to 2.0.1.[12]
- All the Mods 10 7.0: updated from 2.0.1 to 2.0.6.[13]
- All the Mods 10 7.1: updated from 2.0.6 to 2.0.9, which is the version still in 8.1.[1][14]
Unverified The pack changelogs only record version bumps, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jar. What changed inside Refined Storage between these versions (features, fixes, recipe or balance changes) is unverified here, so check the mod's own release notes before relying on a specific change.
