What is Modern Industrialization?

3 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate objective is total automation. It's inspired by GregTech, but the tedious parts have been stripped out: no ore generation changes, no nerfs to vanilla recipes, and no drawer full of crafting tools that break every twenty recipes. Instead there's a single optional tool that gives you the best material conversion ratios by hand, plus a powerful pipe system that lets you automate your setups very early.[1]

This pack ships version 2.2.24 of the mod, and it's been part of the pack since 0.39 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

MI is for you if you like building real processing lines and watching them run forever. It's very resource-hungry, but you get a quarry early on that entirely removes your need for mining if you automate it. Rather than ten tiers of every machine, MI uses an original overclock system that lets machines and multiblocks reach 1 craft per tick if you feed them enough upgrades and energy.[1]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages running Modern Industrialization alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage, because electric machines only reach their full power when they run continuously, and on-demand crafting makes progress extremely slow and inefficient.[3]

How progression works

Progression splits into two halves. The Steam Age is the early game: you combine copper and tin into bronze, harness steam for automatic processing, and build your first factories to produce the resources for the next stage. The challenge here is resource management and processing time optimisation, and the guide warns that most of these setups go obsolete once the Steam Age ends, so don't over-invest in them.[3][4]

The Electric Age is where the mod really opens up. Steam gets converted into electricity, machines get faster and far more complex, and you're strongly encouraged to automate every processing line. These setups are meant to be permanent because they can be continuously upgraded, and the overclock system means production automatically adapts to your consumption. From there the Midgame scales your factory massively once you've mastered electricity and oil processing, and the Endgame goes beyond nuclear fission into what else quantum physics has to offer.[3][5][6][7]

Where to start

Your first step is the Forge Hammer, used for basic processing steps: iron, copper and tin ore each give you 2 raw ores, and every raw ore can be smelted into an ingot. After that, a Steam Mining Drill mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch, which pairs perfectly with the Forge Hammer.[8]

Tip: Install EMI, JEI, or REI so you can see MI's recipes in-game, and consider Jade too. The mod authors recommend it strongly, and the in-game guide constantly points you at the recipe viewer for exact numbers.[1][9]

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the whole point is total automation, and it gets there in stages. The progression splits into the Steam Age, where you build your first small factories and fight with resource management, and the Electric Age, where you are expected to automate every processing line and keep upgrading it.[1][3]

Two things to do before you craft anything: open the in-game guidebook, which walks you through the mod page by page, and get comfortable pulling up recipes in REI. The guide itself keeps telling you to check REI for exact values and machine recipes, and that habit saves you a lot of guessing later.[9][10]

Your first crafts, in order

  1. The Forge Hammer. This is the entry point to the whole mod, and the advancement for it literally exists to tell you to start exploring. It handles basic processing: put iron, copper or tin ore in and you get 2 raw ores per ore, and every raw ore smelts into an ingot.[8][10]
  2. The Hammer. It increases the ratio you get out of the Forge Hammer and unlocks more recipes there, at the cost of some durability. It is the mod's one optional tool rather than a pile of tools you re-craft constantly.[1][8]
  3. The Steam Mining Drill. It mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch, which pairs perfectly with the Forge Hammer, so you no longer need a Silk Touch pickaxe for ores. Right-click a water source to fill it, and keep solid fuel such as coal in it by right-clicking fuel items onto it in your inventory.[8]
  4. Your first bronze. Hammer copper and tin ingots or nuggets into dusts in the Forge Hammer, combine them into bronze dust, then smelt that into a bronze ingot. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust, and that a Mixer does this far more efficiently once you have one.[11]
  5. Bronze steam machines. With bronze flowing you can build the Bronze Macerator, Bronze Mixer, Bronze Furnace and Bronze Compressor, which are the workhorses of the Steam Age.[10]
  6. The Coke Oven. This is the multiblock that starts steel production, and it is the gateway out of the early game.[10]
Tip: Do not over-build in the Steam Age. Most of these setups become obsolete once you finish it, so keep them simple and functional rather than pretty. The setups you build in the Electric Age are the ones meant to be permanent.[3]

Where this leads next

Steel is the next milestone: macerate coke into Coke Dust, combine it with iron for Uncooked Steel Dust (again, the Mixer gives a better ratio), then feed that into a Steam Blast Furnace. That multiblock needs the controller, 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches as the Coke Oven, and its structure is the Coke Oven's with Bricks swapped for Fire Clay Bricks plus one extra hollow layer on top.[12]

After that, crafting an Analog Circuit marks the start of the Electric Age. Your first power source is the Steam Turbine, which converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb every tick, and it will only connect to LV cables on its output side.[10][13]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages running Modern Industrialization through an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines are at their best running continuously, so crafting on demand makes your progress slow and inefficient. Build dedicated processing lines instead.[3]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.41 guide

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and the progression splits into two parts: the Steam Age, where you build your first factories, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent. Electric machines work best when they run continuously, so this section walks through how machines, multiblocks, power, fluids and items fit together.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically sends steam to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam is worth 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 machines at once.[14]

Steam machines accept items, steam or other fluids from any side. You can lock a slot with the lock button in the interface so it only takes one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side, and you can enable auto-eject from the interface. Hoppers, pipes and other automation can still pull outputs from any side.[14]

A wrench rotates a machine with a right-click, and you rotate the output side by sneaking while you shift-click. Breaking a machine with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe for that.[14]

A water pump can feed your boiler automatically. Surround it horizontally with water blocks and it produces water for 1 EU/t, sending it to the machine on its output side. The Bronze Water Pump makes 1/8th of a bucket per adjacent water source every 5 seconds, so at most 1 bucket every 5 seconds.[15]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as bronze ones as long as their energy use stays at or below 4 EU/t. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier too.[16]

Multiblocks

Every multiblock is managed by a controller, but you usually don't interact with the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. The Coke Oven is the first multiblock the guide has you build: it needs an item input, an item output and a fluid input hatch, and it won't start if one is missing. A fluid output hatch for creosote is optional, and since creosote is a chanced output it is voided if there's no room.[17]

Tip: Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and structure errors. Hold a hatch to see where it can go. When the Coke Oven says Shape Valid, it's ready to run.[17]

The Large Steam Boiler is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings under three layers of Bronze Plated Bricks. The controller goes on the second layer, the two middle blocks are Bronze Pipe Machine Casings, and hatches go on the bottom layer. It produces 256 mb/t of steam when fully heated. 80% of any unconsumed heat is lost, so its efficiency drops when it isn't running near maximum output.[18]

The Electric Blast Furnace is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coils, and one more layer of Heatproof Machine Casings. The controller goes on the bottom layer, and hatches go on the top or bottom layer. It needs an Energy Input Hatch to work. An LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables, and an MV one only to MV cables.[19]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or through a Large Tank Hatch, which also opens the tank's menu when you right-click it. Don't break the controller or you lose all the stored fluid.[20]

The Distillation Tower gives one oil processing output per layer, while the Distillery gives only one. This pack's config caps the tower height at maxDistillationTowerHeight = 9.[21][22]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power to cables or machines on its output side. Every cable has a tier that decides how much it can carry and what it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV.[13]

Networks pull in at most 256 EU/t for LV cables, 1,024 EU/t for MV and 8,192 EU/t for HV. Cables have a small internal storage and there is no output limit, so an LV network can briefly deliver more than 256 EU/t. Transformers move power between tiers: a low-to-high Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[13]

Modern Industrialization cables can power blocks from other mods, but they are the only cables that can power Modern Industrialization machines. They can only extract energy from Modern Industrialization blocks.[23]

Electric machines work like steam machines but use electricity. They progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t, and electric multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock a machine manually by right-clicking it with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[9]

A Redstone Control Module lets redstone signals control electric machines and multiblocks. You configure it in your hand, then insert it into the machine or controller. An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps drawing EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull changes it to MV tier, so it then only accepts MV cables.[9][24]

For generation, the Diesel Generator produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. The HV Diesel Generator produces up to 1,024 EU/t, and the Large Diesel Generator reaches up to 16,384 EU/t. If you need constant power, liquid fuels in a Large Steam Boiler give roughly twice the energy of a Diesel Generator from the same fuel when fully heated.[25][26]

With a Pressurizer you can make HP steam, worth 8 EU per mb instead of 1. A Large Steam Turbine accepts both kinds and generates up to 16,384 EU/t, but it doesn't return the water. A Heat Exchanger recovers HP water for another cycle.[27]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket (1,000 mb), and directly connected pipes share their storage. Your fluid throughput per tick is bounded by the network's total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the transfer rates of the machines and tanks at the ends.[28]

Tanks only join the pipe network over a bidirectional connection, which is I/O in the menu or the double arrows on the pipe. Fluid pipes carry one fluid type, and by default they won't connect to empty pipes or blocks. A right-click on the pipe's center with the wrench forces a connection. Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect.[28][29]

Item handling and storage

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, but you can force a connection. They start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you add items to the filter or switch to blacklist. You have to configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Item pipes insert into higher priorities first, and this pack's config sets baseItemPipeTransfer to 16 items every few seconds. Motors can upgrade them.[22][29]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings and can camouflage pipes. Hold it in your offhand and it applies its settings to any Item Pipe you place.[30]

  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject. You can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[9]
  • The Configurable Tank is its fluid counterpart, with 9 configurable slots of 16 buckets each and auto-eject.[31]
  • Bronze tanks hold 4 buckets of fluid each, and bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[32]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it. You can also use it to dump a machine's fluid tank directly.[16]

The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts with Assemblers early, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[9]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using Modern Industrialization together with an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says this makes progress extremely slow and inefficient. This pack still has enableAe2Integration turned on.[3][22]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

6 parts

Modern Industrialization is a full tech tree in its own right, and the in-game guide book walks you through it age by age. There are no quests for it in this pack, so the guide book is your progression map: start with steam, move into electricity, push through oil processing into the midgame, and finish in the quantum tier.[4][5][6][7][33][34]

The Steam Age

You begin by combining copper and tin into bronze, then use that bronze to harness steam for automatic processing. That is the whole opening move of the mod.[4]

Once your single-block boilers stop keeping up, the Large Steam Boiler is the next step. It burns fuel 8 times faster than the Furnace, but it produces 256 mb/t of Steam when fully heated. Keep it running flat out: 80% of any unconsumed heat is lost, so the fuel-to-energy ratio drops hard whenever it runs below maximum output.[18]

Steam also needs somewhere to live. The Large Tank multiblock stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, including the sides, and you set the size from a button in the controller. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or through a Large Tank Hatch.[20]

Watch out: Never break a Large Tank controller while fluid is inside it. You will lose everything the tank is holding.[20]

The Electric Age

Converting steam into electricity opens the Electric Age, where machines get more complex and run much faster. The Steam Turbine is the bridge: it turns every mb of Steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb every tick, and it sits at Low Voltage tier.[5][13]

Cable tier is the thing that actually gates your progression here. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV. LV cable networks pull at most 256 EU/t, MV 1,024 EU/t and HV 8,192 EU/t, and single-block electric machines only ever connect to LV cables. To move more power you either build multiple networks or use Transformers, where a low-to-high tier Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[13]

Electric machines work just like their steam counterparts but overclock recipes progressively up to 32 EU/t. Electric multiblocks are capped at 128 EU/t instead. You can lift both caps by adding upgrades in the machine's menu, and you can raise a machine's tier by right-clicking it with an Advanced Machine Hull to make it MV, after which it only accepts MV cable connections.[9][24]

Two quality-of-life steps are worth doing early. The Assembler automates almost every recipe, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking, and the guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts with them as soon as possible, which makes crafting electric machines basically free. Rubber is the other one: mix Coke Dust with Water in a Mixer for Raw Synthetic Oil, burn that in a Steam Blast Furnace for Synthetic Oil, then mix it with paper for rubber sheets that combine with Wiremill wires into cables.[9][35]

Advanced machines and aluminum

Aluminum is the material that marks the step into more advanced machines, and like the other electric machines they still only connect to LV cables. Put bauxite dust in an Electric Blast Furnace for aluminum nuggets, or electrolyze bauxite dust into aluminum dust and smelt that directly into ingots in the EBF.[31]

The EBF itself is the electric version of the Steam Blast Furnace and unlocks new recipes, with the usual 128 EU/t multiblock overclock cap. Build it from one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coils and another layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, with the controller on the bottom layer and hatches on the top or bottom layer. Remember to add Energy Input Hatches, and note that the LV hatch only takes LV cables while MV hatches take MV cables for when you need serious power.[19]

This tier also brings the Centrifuge for carbon dust and better steel and silicon recipes, the Chemical Reactor for item and fluid reactions, the Distillery for breaking fluids into lighter parts, and the Configurable Tank with 9 configurable slots that each hold 16 buckets.[31]

Oil processing

The Distillery leads straight into Oil Processing, and the Oil Drilling Rig is the multiblock that digs Crude Oil out from under bedrock. It is built from Steel Machine Casings, Steel Pipe Machine Casings and Chains, and you can replace the hatches with Steel Machine Casings as long as you keep Item Input, Fluid Output and Energy Input Hatches.[25][31]

Crude Oil becomes fuels and a ton of byproducts, plus more efficient Rubber Sheet production. Burn those fuels in a Diesel Generator, which produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. For steady output, feed liquid fuels into a Large Steam Boiler instead: fully heated, it produces roughly twice the energy a Diesel Generator gets from the same amount of fuel.[25]

Once oil is flowing you can build the Diesel Jetpack, and the more powerful the fuel, the faster it goes. Bind the Toggle Flight key before you jump off anything.[36]

The Midgame

With electricity and oil processing mastered, you have the infrastructure to scale up massively. The guide book gets terser from here, giving you only the key information and leaving the rest to figure out.[7]

  • The Electric Quarry is the electric equivalent of the Steam Quarry and uses exactly the same structure; feed it items and energy and it chews through resources.[37]
  • The advanced Large Steam Boiler is a bigger version that produces up to 1,024 mb/t of steam.[37]
  • The Portable Storage Unit carries energy in your inventory. It has no capacity by default; right-click it with batteries to add storage, and higher level batteries add more.[38]
  • An Overdrive Module stops machine efficiency from dropping when a machine is idle, at the cost of consuming EU/t as though it were still processing.[24]
  • Redstone Control Modules let you control electric machines and multiblocks with redstone. Configure the module in your hand, then insert it into the machine or multiblock controller.[9]
  • Lubricant, made by mixing creosote and redstone, overclocks a machine manually when you right-click it with a lubricant container: each 25 mb adds 1 efficiency tick.[9]

If you are running Applied Energistics alongside it, ME Wire is the crossover item that links the two systems, and it can be crafted or dyed in every colour.[39]

The Endgame and Quantum Tier

The endgame goes past nuclear fission into the Quantum Tier, built around the Singularity, an immensely powerful ball of matter that becomes useful once you have the right stabilizing materials.[6][34]

  • The Quantum Upgrade is the most powerful machine upgrade in the mod.[34]
  • The Quantum Sword instantly vaporizes anything you hit with it.[34]
  • The full Quantum Armor set makes you immune to all damage and grants creative flight, with each piece adding 25% to the chance of nullifying damage.[34]
  • The Quantum Barrel holds 2,147,483,647 stacks of a single item, and the Quantum Tank holds 2,147,483,647 buckets of a single fluid.[34]

The Gravichestplate is the other big late-game armour milestone worth aiming for.[39]

Unverified Exact EU costs, upgrade values and the precise ordering of the quantum-tier unlocks are not covered by the sources used for this page; check REI in-game for the numbers. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization (MI) is a standalone tech mod, but this pack wires it into other mods in a few clear places: quarry drills that dig up ores from other mods, a pack-added electrolyzer recipe, the Extended Industrialization machine add-on, and a few endgame crafts that need MI parts.[1][39]

Electric Quarry ore tables

The pack adds quarry recipes where each MI drill tier unlocks a set of ores. Many come from All the Ores, plus vanilla ores and one from Powah. Better drills reach rarer ores, so upgrading the drill is how you progress.[39]

The Electric Quarry has the same structure as the Steam Quarry, so you only need to provide items and energy.[37]

Aluminum from All the Ores

The pack adds an MI electrolyzer recipe that splits Dirty Aluminum Dust into Aluminum Dust, Oxygen and Titanium Tiny Dust.[39]

Extended Industrialization machines

Extended Industrialization adds extra machines such as the brewery, canning machine, composter, farmer and honey extractor. They are built from MI parts like machine hulls, circuits, rotors, motors and pumps. Most recipes are the mod's own, but the pack changes the ones for Steel Plated Bricks, the Bronze Bending Machine and the Bronze Composter.[39]

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 0.60 ships Modern Industrialization 2.2.24. The mod has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier, so you've been using it for a long time. Here's what changed in the mod's own releases leading up to the version you're playing.[2]

2.2.24 (the version in this pack)

  • Machine upgrades were buffed.[40]
  • Fluid hatches were buffed to match fluid tanks.[40]
  • Machine capacity can now be set independently of the current inventory.[40]
  • Multiblock screen alignment was fixed, and the Japanese translation of the guidebook was updated.[40]

The betas before it (2.2.17 to 2.2.21)

  • 2.2.21-beta added the Overdrive Module, which spends electricity to preserve machine efficiency. The Replicator model now uses a quantum hull, the P2P tunnel got a tooltip, fluid pipe meshing performance improved, and the advanced upgrade advancement now comes after the basic upgrade one.[41]
  • 2.2.20-beta added a config option for the item pipe base transfer rate, brought equipment quality of life improvements, and switched single-input material recipes to shapeless recipes.[42]
  • 2.2.19-beta updated the mod to 1.21.1 and added a config option for the Y position of the armor HUD. The Steam Drill no longer mines or highlights blocks it shouldn't, and a few missing grouping tags were added. Double multiblock active face rendering was also fixed.[43]
  • 2.2.18-beta made the ethylene recipe use the sulfur dust tag and added support for hoe and sword tagged tools. It also improved machine rendering performance and cleaned up tooltips.[44]
  • 2.2.17-beta fixed mobs sometimes becoming immortal after being killed with a quantum sword, and fixed KubeJS replaceInput/Output losing the item count for machine recipes. JEI compatibility was updated, IDs were added to all recipes, and EMI warnings were fixed. Steam and diesel tools can no longer be enchanted with an anvil.[45]
Tip: If you use KubeJS to tweak machine recipes, the 2.2.17-beta fix for replaceInput/Output losing item counts is already in your 2.2.24 install.[2][45]

Unverified Changelogs for 2.2.22 and 2.2.23, and any pack changelog entries about changes the pack itself made to this mod, were not available, so anything those might contain is unverified.
