What is Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate goal is total automation. This pack ships version 2.2.34 of it. It is inspired by GregTech, but it drops the tedious parts: instead of a pile of crafting tools you get a single optional tool, a powerful pipe system for early automation, and an early quarry that can replace your mining.[1][2]

It is built for players who like designing factories and automating every resource. Rather than 10 tiers of every machine, it uses an overclock system that lets machines and multiblocks reach 1 craft per tick if you give them enough upgrades and energy.[1]

How the progression works

The mod's own guide splits progress into the Steam Age and everything after it. You start by combining copper and tin into bronze, then use steam to power your first automatic processing. Most Steam Age setups become obsolete once you leave it, so don't over-invest in them.[3][4]

The Electric Age comes next. Machines get faster and more complex, and the setups you build here are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them. After that the guide moves on to a Midgame built on electricity and oil processing, and finally an Endgame.[3][5][6][7]

Your first steps are the Forge Hammer for basic processing, then a steam-powered mining drill that mines 3x3 blocks and has Silk Touch.[8]

Where it shows up in this pack's quests

The pack has quest chapters for the Steam Age and the Electric Age. The Steam Age chapter starts with the Forge Hammer (a quest in "?") and continues with steel-tier machines such as the Steam Quarry (a quest in "?").[9]

The Electric Age chapter covers electric machines like the Electric Quarry (a quest in "?"). It then moves through the Centrifuge, Electrolyzer and Chemical Reactor, stainless steel, the Electric Blast Furnace, and Electronic Circuit production.[10]

Watch out: The mod's guide strongly discourages using it alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines work best running continuously, and on-demand systems make progress extremely slow and inefficient.[3]
Tip: Install a recipe viewer (EMI, JEI or REI) to see recipes in-game. The mod's page also recommends the optional Jade.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show this mod on the ATM Star path, so don't count on it for that route.

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

Welcome to the Steam Age! Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and the early game is where you build the resources the rest of the mod runs on. Here's the order to go in, and why.[3][4]

First: the Forge Hammer

Your first craft is the Forge Hammer. The mod's own advancement describes it as the way to start exploring the mod, and the pack's Steam Age chapter has a quest for it. Put iron, copper or tin ore into it and you get 2 raw ores per ore. A Hammer tool raises that ratio and unlocks more recipes, at the cost of some durability. Quest: a quest in "?".[8][9][11]

Next, think about a Steam Mining Drill. It mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch, which pairs nicely with the Forge Hammer. It needs water and solid fuel such as coal. Right-click a water source to fill it, and right-click fuel onto it in your inventory. The fuel burns slowly while you mine.[8]

Next: bronze

Hammer copper and tin ingots (or nuggets) in the Forge Hammer to get dusts, then combine copper and tin dust into bronze dust. A Mixer does this more efficiently. Smelt the bronze dust to get a bronze ingot. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[12]

The pack's quests then ask for 4 Bronze Machine Casing, which lead to the Bronze Boiler. After that come the Bronze Water Pump and the Bronze Compressor. Quests: a quest in "?", a quest in "?".[9]

Then: coke, steel and rubber

The next quest in the chain asks for a Coke Oven, with its four bronze hatches and 21 bricks, and the mod's own advancement says the Coke Oven starts steel production. Macerate coke into Coke Dust and combine it with iron for Uncooked Steel Dust. A Mixer gives a better ratio. Then you need a Steam Blast Furnace to turn it into steel. Its controller needs 29 Fire Clay Bricks plus the same three hatches as the Coke Oven. Quests: a quest in "?", a quest in "?".[9][11][13]

Coke Dust is also the start of your rubber. Mix it with water in a Mixer for Raw Synthetic Oil, burn that in the Steam Blast Furnace for Synthetic Oil, then mix it with paper to get Rubber Sheet. Rubber plus wires from the Wiremill makes cables. The guide strongly recommends automating this. Quest: a quest in "?".[9][14]

Tip: Don't over-invest in your Steam Age setups. Most of them become obsolete once you reach the Electric Age, so build what you need to progress and move on.[3]

Heading into the Electric Age

Crafting an Analog Circuit starts the Electric Age, and the Steam Age chapter has a quest for it: a quest in "?". Electric machines work like steam machines, but they use electricity and progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t.[9][11][15]

Once you reach the Assembler, the guide suggests automating machine hulls, analog circuits, motors, pistons, robot arms and conveyors as soon as possible, so electric machines become basically free to craft. Here is the pack's Assembler recipe for the motor, which several of the others use.[15][16]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and the progression splits into two parts: the Steam Age, where you build your first factories, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent. Electric machines work best when they run continuously, so this section walks through how machines, multiblocks, power, fluids and items fit together.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically sends steam to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam is worth 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 machines at once.[17]

Steam machines accept items, steam or other fluids from any side. You can lock a slot with the lock button in the interface so it only takes one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side, and you can enable auto-eject from the interface. Hoppers, pipes and other automation can still pull outputs from any side.[17]

A wrench rotates a machine with a right-click, and you rotate the output side by sneaking while you shift-click. Breaking a machine with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe for that.[17]

A water pump can feed your boiler automatically. Surround it horizontally with water blocks and it produces water for 1 EU/t, sending it to the machine on its output side. The Bronze Water Pump makes 1/8th of a bucket per adjacent water source every 5 seconds, so at most 1 bucket every 5 seconds.[18]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as bronze ones as long as their energy use stays at or below 4 EU/t. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier too.[19]

Multiblocks

Every multiblock is managed by a controller, but you usually don't interact with the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. The Coke Oven is the first multiblock the guide has you build: it needs an item input, an item output and a fluid input hatch, and it won't start if one is missing. A fluid output hatch for creosote is optional, and since creosote is a chanced output it is voided if there's no room.[20]

Tip: Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and structure errors. Hold a hatch to see where it can go. When the Coke Oven says Shape Valid, it's ready to run.[20]

The Large Steam Boiler is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings under three layers of Bronze Plated Bricks. The controller goes on the second layer, the two middle blocks are Bronze Pipe Machine Casings, and hatches go on the bottom layer. It produces 256 mb/t of steam when fully heated. 80% of any unconsumed heat is lost, so its efficiency drops when it isn't running near maximum output.[21]

The Electric Blast Furnace is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coils, and one more layer of Heatproof Machine Casings. The controller goes on the bottom layer, and hatches go on the top or bottom layer. It needs an Energy Input Hatch to work. An LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables, and an MV one only to MV cables.[22]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or through a Large Tank Hatch, which also opens the tank's menu when you right-click it. Don't break the controller or you lose all the stored fluid.[23]

The Distillation Tower gives one oil processing output per layer, while the Distillery gives only one. This pack's config caps the tower height at maxDistillationTowerHeight = 9.[24][25]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power to cables or machines on its output side. Every cable has a tier that decides how much it can carry and what it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV.[26]

Networks pull in at most 256 EU/t for LV cables, 1,024 EU/t for MV and 8,192 EU/t for HV. Cables have a small internal storage and there is no output limit, so an LV network can briefly deliver more than 256 EU/t. Transformers move power between tiers: a low-to-high Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[26]

Modern Industrialization cables can power blocks from other mods, but they are the only cables that can power Modern Industrialization machines. They can only extract energy from Modern Industrialization blocks.[11]

Electric machines work like steam machines but use electricity. They progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t, and electric multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock a machine manually by right-clicking it with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[15]

A Redstone Control Module lets redstone signals control electric machines and multiblocks. You configure it in your hand, then insert it into the machine or controller. An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps drawing EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull changes it to MV tier, so it then only accepts MV cables.[15][27]

For generation, the Diesel Generator produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. The HV Diesel Generator produces up to 1,024 EU/t, and the Large Diesel Generator reaches up to 16,384 EU/t. If you need constant power, liquid fuels in a Large Steam Boiler give roughly twice the energy of a Diesel Generator from the same fuel when fully heated.[28][29]

With a Pressurizer you can make HP steam, worth 8 EU per mb instead of 1. A Large Steam Turbine accepts both kinds and generates up to 16,384 EU/t, but it doesn't return the water. A Heat Exchanger recovers HP water for another cycle.[30]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket (1,000 mb), and directly connected pipes share their storage. Your fluid throughput per tick is bounded by the network's total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the transfer rates of the machines and tanks at the ends.[31]

Tanks only join the pipe network over a bidirectional connection, which is I/O in the menu or the double arrows on the pipe. Fluid pipes carry one fluid type, and by default they won't connect to empty pipes or blocks. A right-click on the pipe's center with the wrench forces a connection. Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect.[31][32]

Item handling and storage

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, but you can force a connection. They start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you add items to the filter or switch to blacklist. You have to configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Item pipes insert into higher priorities first, and this pack's config sets baseItemPipeTransfer to 16 items every few seconds. Motors can upgrade them.[25][32]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings and can camouflage pipes. Hold it in your offhand and it applies its settings to any Item Pipe you place.[33]

  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject. You can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[15]
  • The Configurable Tank is its fluid counterpart, with 9 configurable slots of 16 buckets each and auto-eject.[34]
  • Bronze tanks hold 4 buckets of fluid each, and bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[35]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it. You can also use it to dump a machine's fluid tank directly.[19]

The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts with Assemblers early, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[15]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using Modern Industrialization together with an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says this makes progress extremely slow and inefficient. This pack still has enableAe2Integration turned on.[3][25]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

6 parts

Modern Industrialization is built around tiers. The pack's quest book has chapters for the steam age, the electric age, oil, explosives, nuclear power and the quantum tier, so this section walks through them in that order and shows the in-pack recipes that matter.[9][10][36][37][38][39]

Steam Age

It starts with bronze, which the in-game guide describes as copper combined with tin, and you use it to harness steam for automatic processing. The steam chapter begins with the Forge Hammer (a quest in "?"). The next quest asks for four Bronze Machine Casing (a quest in "?"), and after that comes the Bronze Boiler (a quest in "?").[4][9]

After the boiler the chain goes through the Bronze Water Pump (a quest in "?") and the Bronze Compressor (a quest in "?"). Then comes the Coke Oven quest (a quest in "?"), which also asks for the four bronze hatches and 21 bricks.[9]

The next stretch of the quest chain is the rubber and steel line: Raw Synthetic Oil Bucket, the Steam Blast Furnace, Coke Dust, then Rubber Sheet and the Steel Machine Casing. The guide strongly recommends automating this rubber process. The pack also adds Immersive Engineering crusher recipes that turn coal coke into Coke Dust.[9][14][16]

Crusher (immersiveengineering)

  • any coal coke

The pack adds this Immersive Engineering crusher recipe for Coke Dust.

A separate branch of the chapter has the steel-tier versions of the basic machines, such as the Steel Furnace, Steel Macerator and Steel Boiler, plus the Steam Quarry. The last quest in the longest chain is the Analog Circuit (a quest in "?"), which leads you toward electricity.[9]

Electric Age

Electric machines work like their steam versions but run on electricity, and regular ones overclock progressively up to 32 EU/t. The Steam Turbine is the first generator: it converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. Copper, silver and tin cables are LV, and single block electric machines only connect to LV cables.[5][15][26]

Tip: The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyors in Assemblers as soon as you can. That makes crafting electric machines basically free.[15]

The Electric Age chapter opens with electric versions of machines you already know, like the Electric Macerator, Electric Furnace, Electric Wiremill and Electric Quarry. The main chain starts at the Redstone Battery. The next quest asks for the Robot Arm, Pump, Motor, Piston and Conveyor, and the quests after it are the Electric Compressor and then the Polarizer. The pack changes the Redstone Battery's assembler recipe.[10][16]

This Redstone Battery assembler recipe is changed by the pack.

From the polarizer you reach the Electric Blast Furnace (a quest in "?"). After it come Silicon Dust and the Cupronickel Coil, then the Diode, Transistor and Electronic Circuit Board, and finally the Electronic Circuit (a quest in "?"). The Large Pump and Large Motor follow.[10]

The EBF is a multiblock, so its overclock is capped at 128 EU/t by default, and its LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables.[15][22]

Advanced machines and stainless steel

Aluminum opens up the advanced machines. Put bauxite dust in an EBF to get aluminum nuggets, or electrolyze it for aluminum dust and smelt that into ingots. The Centrifuge, Chemical Reactor and Electrolyzer each have a quest in the Electric Age chapter, and the Distillery has one in the oil chapter.[10][34][36]

The Electric Age quests branching off those three machines collect chromium, manganese, sulfuric acid and oxygen, then move on to Stainless Steel Dust, Stainless Steel Hot Ingot, the Vacuum Freezer and finally the Stainless Steel Ingot.[10]

  • any nickel dust

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:alloy/mixer/stainless_steel/dust

Tip: Right-click a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull to switch it to MV tier. It will then accept MV cable connections only.[27]

Age of Oil

The oil chapter centers on the Oil Drilling Rig, which digs for crude oil under the bedrock. Its structure uses steel casings, and you need at least Item Input, Fluid Output and Energy Input Hatches. The chapter also covers Ethylene Bucket and Polyethylene Bucket, plus metals like Titanium Ingot, the Kanthal Coil and Blastproof Alloy Plate. It also includes the Advanced Upgrade.[28][36]

Crude oil becomes fuel for the Diesel Generator, which produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables.[28]

Tungsten has its own quests: Tungsten Dust, Tungsten Nugget and Tungsten Ingot. The pack adds a route through another mod: Actually Additions can crush Raw Tungsten into dust. It also changes Immersive Engineering's arc furnace, crusher and hammer crushing recipes for tungsten.[16][36]

Explosives and nuclear

The explosion chapter's quests cover the Implosion Compressor, Industrial TNT, Turbo Machine Hull and Digital Circuit. It also has quests for the Nuclear Alloy Plate, Cadmium Plate and Beryllium Plate.[37]

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/hull/turbo_machine_hull

The nuclear chapter is short. It has fuel rod quests for the Uranium Fuel Rod, Uranium Double Fuel Rod and Uranium Quad Fuel Rod. It also asks for Soldering Alloy Dust.[38]

Mixer (modern_industrialization)

  • any lead dust
  • any tin dust

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:alloy/mixer/soldering_alloy/dust

The pack's chapter_2_the_star chapter also has quests for the Forge Hammer, Large Advanced Motor, Blastproof Casing and the quad fuel rod.[40]

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/component/craft/large_advanced_motor

Quantum tier

The endgame is the Quantum Tier. The pack has quests for the Quantum armor set (a quest in "?") and the Quantum Sword (a quest in "?"). The full armor grants creative flight, and each piece adds 25% to the chance of nullifying damage.[39][41][42]

The guide also lists the Quantum Barrel and Quantum Tank, each holding 2,147,483,647 of its item or fluid type, and the Quantum Upgrade as the most powerful machine upgrade.[39]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization (MI) is a standalone tech mod, but in this pack it shows up in recipes alongside a lot of other mods. Everything below comes from the pack's recipe dump, so it's what you'll actually see in-game.[1][16]

Quarries that dig up other mods' ores

The pack adds its own quarry recipes for MI's drills, and the ore tables mix in ores from other mods. The Bronze Drill yields Osmium Ore and Tin Ore alongside vanilla coal, copper, gold, iron and redstone ore, plus MI's Lignite Coal Ore.[16]

The Steel Drill yields Aluminum Ore, Lead Ore, Nickel Ore and Salt Ore. It also gets vanilla diamond, emerald and lapis, MI's Antimony Ore and Quartz Ore, and Uraninite Ore from Powah.[16]

Going higher, the Stainless Steel Drill yields Platinum Ore along with MI's Monazite Ore, Titanium Ore and Tungsten Ore. The Titanium Drill gives you Fluorite Ore, Iridium Ore and Uranium Ore.[16]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

The mod shows up in nine quest chapters in this pack: steam_age, the_electric_age, age_of_oil, explosion_power, the_nuclear_age, chapter_2_the_star, basic_armor, basic_tools and tips_and_tricks. The quests have no titles, so you identify them by their task items and by what they unlock after.[9][10][36][37][38][40][41][42][43]

Steam age

This chapter has two starting quests. One asks for the Steel Upgrade (a quest in "?"). The other asks for the Forge Hammer (a quest in "?"). A whole set of steel-tier machine quests, such as the Steel Furnace, Steel Macerator and Steam Quarry, sits behind a quest that is not part of this mod. The Bronze Drill follows the steam quarry quest (a quest in "?").[9]

The main line runs in this order:[9]

  1. a quest in "?": four Bronze Machine Casing, after the forge hammer quest and one quest outside this mod.[9]
  2. a quest in "?", then a quest in "?", then a quest in "?": the Bronze Boiler, Bronze Water Pump and Bronze Compressor.[9]
  3. a quest in "?": the four bronze item and fluid hatches, 21 bricks and a Coke Oven.[9]
  4. a quest in "?": a Raw Synthetic Oil Bucket. After it come a quest in "?" (the Steam Blast Furnace) and a quest in "?" (Coke Dust).[9]
  5. a quest in "?" asks for a Rubber Sheet, then a quest in "?" for a Steel Machine Casing, then a quest in "?" for the Bronze Cutting Machine.[9]
  6. a quest in "?" (Steel Wiremill) and a quest in "?" (Lubricant Bucket) both follow the cutting machine. The wiremill quest leads to a quest in "?", the Analog Circuit.[9]

The electric age

Ten quests are open from the start. They ask for the Electric Quarry, Helium Bucket, Electric Macerator, Electric Compressor, Electric Water Pump, Electric Mixer, Electric Furnace, Electric Wiremill, Electric Unpacker and Electric Cutting Machine.[10]

The machine line starts with the Redstone Battery (a quest in "?"). Next is a quest in "?", which wants a Robot Arm, Pump, Motor, Piston and Conveyor. After that:[10]

  1. a quest in "?": another Electric Compressor.[10]
  2. a quest in "?": the Polarizer.[10]
  3. a quest in "?": the Electric Blast Furnace.[10]
  4. a quest in "?" (Silicon Dust) and a quest in "?" (Cupronickel Coil) both follow the blast furnace.[10]
  5. a quest in "?": a Diode, Transistor and Electronic Circuit Board, then a quest in "?" for the Electronic Circuit.[10]
  6. Finally a quest in "?" (Large Pump and Large Motor) and a quest in "?" (Electric Packer).[10]

A second branch is chemistry. a quest in "?" (Chemical Reactor), a quest in "?" (Electrolyzer) and a quest in "?" (Centrifuge) each follow a quest outside this mod. Six quests hang off them, asking for Chromium Nugget, Manganese Crushed Dust, Manganese Sulfuric Solution Bucket, Sulfuric Acid Bucket, Manganese Tiny Dust and Oxygen Bucket. All six come before a quest in "?" (Stainless Steel Dust). Then come a quest in "?" (hot ingot), a quest in "?" (Vacuum Freezer) and a quest in "?" (Stainless Steel Ingot).[10]

Oil, explosives and nuclear

The age_of_oil chapter shows no prerequisites on any of its quests, so you can take them in any order. They cover the Oil Drilling Rig, Distillery, Advanced Upgrade, Kanthal Coil, Blastproof Alloy Plate and Mixed Blastproof Ingot. They also cover titanium (Titanium Ingot and Titanium Hot Ingot), tungsten (Tungsten Dust, Tungsten Tiny Dust, Tungsten Nugget and Tungsten Ingot) and plastics (Ethylene Bucket and Polyethylene Bucket).[36]

The explosion_power chapter asks for the Implosion Compressor, Turbo Machine Hull, Industrial TNT, Nuclear Alloy Plate, Blastproof Alloy Plate, Toluene Bucket, Cadmium Plate, Digital Circuit, Sodium Dust and Sodium Battery. All of those are open from the start. The last quest, a quest in "?" (Beryllium Plate), needs the industrial TNT quest (a quest in "?") plus one quest outside this mod.[37]

The_nuclear_age is short and unordered. It asks for the Uranium Fuel Rod, Uranium Double Fuel Rod, Uranium Quad Fuel Rod and Soldering Alloy Dust.[38]

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

The pack changelogs only record version bumps for Modern Industrialization, not what changed inside the mod, so this section is short on purpose.[44][45][46]

  • All the Mods 10 2.26 updated Modern Industrialization from 2.2.31 to 2.2.32.[46]
  • All the Mods 10 2.31 updated it from 2.2.32 to 2.2.33.[45]
  • All the Mods 10 2.33 updated it from 2.2.33 to 2.2.34.[44]

All the Mods 10 2.41 ships Modern Industrialization 2.2.34, the same version that 2.33 introduced. The pack's mod list shows the mod was first included in All the Mods 10 1.9 or earlier.[2][44]

Unverified The mod's own changelogs for the shipped versions (2.2.32, 2.2.33 and 2.2.34) are not available in the sources here, so what changed inside the mod in each update, such as new machines, recipe changes or fixes, is unverified.
