What is Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod whose ultimate goal is total automation. It's inspired by GregTech but drops the tedious parts. You don't have to keep remaking piles of crafting tools, and there aren't 10 tiers of every machine. Instead, an overclock system lets machines and multiblocks reach 1 craft per tick if you give them enough upgrades and energy. This pack runs version 2.2.34.[1][2]

It's a great fit if you enjoy designing processing lines. The mod is very resource-hungry, but it gives you a powerful pipe system early on, so you can start automating right away. You also get a quarry early that can replace mining entirely once you automate it.[1]

How the progression works

The mod has two big stages. In the Steam Age you make bronze and use steam power to build your first factories. The challenge there is managing resources and optimizing processing time. Most Steam Age setups become obsolete afterwards, so don't over-invest in them.[3][4]

In the Electric Age you convert steam into electricity, and your machines get more complex and much faster. You're encouraged to automate every processing line. These setups are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them.[3][5]

Once you've mastered electricity and oil processing, the Midgame is about scaling your factory up massively. The Endgame then goes beyond nuclear fission into more of what quantum physics has to offer.[6][7]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using it alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines only reach their full power when they run continuously, so on-demand crafting makes your progress slow and inefficient.[3]

Where it shows up in the pack's quests

The pack has a Steam Age quest chapter. It starts with the Steam Bucket and the Forge Hammer, which both lead into the Steam Mining Drill. From there, the Bronze Machine Casing opens up the bronze machines, the Coke Oven and the Steam Blast Furnace. Other quests in the chapter cover steel machines and the Steam Quarry.[8]

Other chapters use the mod too. The armor chapter asks for the Quantum Helmet, Quantum Chestplate, Quantum Leggings and Quantum Boots. The tools chapter asks for the Quantum Sword. Another chapter follows a quest in "?" with quests for the Large Advanced Motor, the Uranium Quad Fuel Rod and the Blastproof Casing.[9][10][11]

Unverified It is not confirmed whether any of these items are needed to craft the ATM Star.

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation. The progression has two parts. The Steam Age is the early game, and the Electric Age comes after it. In the Steam Age you build your first factories, and they produce the resources you need for the second part.[3]

Watch out: Most Steam Age setups become obsolete once you finish the Steam Age, so don't spend too much effort making them perfect. Build what you need and keep moving.[3]

Step 1: The Forge Hammer

Before you can make bronze, you need a Forge Hammer. It handles basic processing steps. Put iron, copper or tin ore in it and you get 2 raw ores per ore, and every raw ore smelts into an ingot. A Hammer raises that ratio and unlocks more recipes, but each use costs some durability.[12]

This pack changed the Forge Hammer's crafting recipe, so use the in-pack version below instead of one you remember from another pack. The Forge Hammer is also a task in the pack's Steam Age quest a quest in "?".[8][13]

Step 2: A Steam Mining Drill

Next, think about making a Steam Mining Drill. It mines 3x3 blocks at a time and has Silk Touch. That means you get ores directly without a Silk Touch pickaxe, which pairs nicely with the Forge Hammer.[12]

The drill needs both water and solid fuel, such as coal. Right-click a water source to fill it with water. To fuel it, right-click the fuel items onto the drill in your inventory. Keep some fuel in it at all times, because the drill burns fuel slowly while you mine.[12]

In the quest book, a quest in "?" unlocks after the Forge Hammer quest and after a quest in "?", which asks for a Steam Bucket.[8]

Step 3: Your first bronze

  1. Hammer copper and tin ingots in the Forge Hammer to get copper and tin dusts. Hammering nuggets gives tiny dusts instead.[14]
  2. Combine copper and tin dusts to make bronze dust, or tiny dusts to make bronze tiny dust. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[14]
  3. Smelt the bronze dust to get a bronze ingot.[14]
Tip: Making bronze dust is more efficient in a Mixer, so a Bronze Mixer is worth building once you can.[14]

Step 4: Bronze Machine Casing and your first machines

The key quest in the pack's Steam Age chapter is a quest in "?", which asks for a Bronze Machine Casing. Completing it unlocks quests for the first bronze steam machines, and you can do those in any order.[8]

Tip: This pack changed the Assembler recipes for the Bronze Macerator and the Bronze Cutting Machine, so check the in-pack versions below. For every other recipe, install and use a recipe viewer such as EMI, JEI or REI in-game.[1][13]

Step 5: On to steel

Steel production starts with a Coke Oven. In the pack, a quest in "?" asks for the four bronze item and fluid hatches, 21 Bricks and the Coke Oven itself.[8][15]

Macerate coke to get Coke Dust, then combine it with iron to get Uncooked Steel Dust. As with bronze, the Mixer gives you a better ratio.[16]

To turn Uncooked Steel Dust into steel, you need a Steam Blast Furnace, which has its own quest, a quest in "?". Craft the controller, 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches as the Coke Oven. The structure matches the Coke Oven's, except that Fire Clay Bricks replace the Bricks and there is one extra hollow layer on top.[8][16]

Watch out: The mod's guide strongly discourages pairing it with on-demand automation mods like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines reach their full power when they run continuously, and on-demand crafting makes progress very slow and inefficient.[3]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.41 guide

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and the progression splits into two parts: the Steam Age, where you build your first factories, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent. Electric machines work best when they run continuously, so this section walks through how machines, multiblocks, power, fluids and items fit together.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically sends steam to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam is worth 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 machines at once.[17]

Steam machines accept items, steam or other fluids from any side. You can lock a slot with the lock button in the interface so it only takes one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side, and you can enable auto-eject from the interface. Hoppers, pipes and other automation can still pull outputs from any side.[17]

A wrench rotates a machine with a right-click, and you rotate the output side by sneaking while you shift-click. Breaking a machine with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe for that.[17]

A water pump can feed your boiler automatically. Surround it horizontally with water blocks and it produces water for 1 EU/t, sending it to the machine on its output side. The Bronze Water Pump makes 1/8th of a bucket per adjacent water source every 5 seconds, so at most 1 bucket every 5 seconds.[18]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as bronze ones as long as their energy use stays at or below 4 EU/t. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier too.[19]

Multiblocks

Every multiblock is managed by a controller, but you usually don't interact with the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. The Coke Oven is the first multiblock the guide has you build: it needs an item input, an item output and a fluid input hatch, and it won't start if one is missing. A fluid output hatch for creosote is optional, and since creosote is a chanced output it is voided if there's no room.[20]

Tip: Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and structure errors. Hold a hatch to see where it can go. When the Coke Oven says Shape Valid, it's ready to run.[20]

The Large Steam Boiler is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings under three layers of Bronze Plated Bricks. The controller goes on the second layer, the two middle blocks are Bronze Pipe Machine Casings, and hatches go on the bottom layer. It produces 256 mb/t of steam when fully heated. 80% of any unconsumed heat is lost, so its efficiency drops when it isn't running near maximum output.[21]

The Electric Blast Furnace is one layer of Heatproof Machine Casings, two hollow layers of Cupronickel Coils, and one more layer of Heatproof Machine Casings. The controller goes on the bottom layer, and hatches go on the top or bottom layer. It needs an Energy Input Hatch to work. An LV Energy Input Hatch only connects to LV cables, and an MV one only to MV cables.[22]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, sides included. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or through a Large Tank Hatch, which also opens the tank's menu when you right-click it. Don't break the controller or you lose all the stored fluid.[23]

The Distillation Tower gives one oil processing output per layer, while the Distillery gives only one. This pack's config caps the tower height at maxDistillationTowerHeight = 9.[24][25]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power to cables or machines on its output side. Every cable has a tier that decides how much it can carry and what it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV, while Cupronickel and Electrum are MV.[26]

Networks pull in at most 256 EU/t for LV cables, 1,024 EU/t for MV and 8,192 EU/t for HV. Cables have a small internal storage and there is no output limit, so an LV network can briefly deliver more than 256 EU/t. Transformers move power between tiers: a low-to-high Transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs.[26]

Modern Industrialization cables can power blocks from other mods, but they are the only cables that can power Modern Industrialization machines. They can only extract energy from Modern Industrialization blocks.[15]

Electric machines work like steam machines but use electricity. They progressively overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t, and electric multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock a machine manually by right-clicking it with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[27]

A Redstone Control Module lets redstone signals control electric machines and multiblocks. You configure it in your hand, then insert it into the machine or controller. An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps drawing EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull changes it to MV tier, so it then only accepts MV cables.[27][28]

For generation, the Diesel Generator produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables. The HV Diesel Generator produces up to 1,024 EU/t, and the Large Diesel Generator reaches up to 16,384 EU/t. If you need constant power, liquid fuels in a Large Steam Boiler give roughly twice the energy of a Diesel Generator from the same fuel when fully heated.[29][30]

With a Pressurizer you can make HP steam, worth 8 EU per mb instead of 1. A Large Steam Turbine accepts both kinds and generates up to 16,384 EU/t, but it doesn't return the water. A Heat Exchanger recovers HP water for another cycle.[31]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket (1,000 mb), and directly connected pipes share their storage. Your fluid throughput per tick is bounded by the network's total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can move up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank (16 buckets) with an I/O connection raises that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the transfer rates of the machines and tanks at the ends.[32]

Tanks only join the pipe network over a bidirectional connection, which is I/O in the menu or the double arrows on the pipe. Fluid pipes carry one fluid type, and by default they won't connect to empty pipes or blocks. A right-click on the pipe's center with the wrench forces a connection. Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect.[32][33]

Item handling and storage

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, but you can force a connection. They start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you add items to the filter or switch to blacklist. You have to configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Item pipes insert into higher priorities first, and this pack's config sets baseItemPipeTransfer to 16 items every few seconds. Motors can upgrade them.[25][33]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings and can camouflage pipes. Hold it in your offhand and it applies its settings to any Item Pipe you place.[34]

  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject. You can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[27]
  • The Configurable Tank is its fluid counterpart, with 9 configurable slots of 16 buckets each and auto-eject.[35]
  • Bronze tanks hold 4 buckets of fluid each, and bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[36]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it. You can also use it to dump a machine's fluid tank directly.[19]

The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts with Assemblers early, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[27]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using Modern Industrialization together with an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says this makes progress extremely slow and inefficient. This pack still has enableAe2Integration turned on.[3][25]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

6 parts

Modern Industrialization is built around a series of ages, and each one unlocks the next. You start in the Steam Age, where bronze (copper plus tin) lets you harness steam for automatic processing. Next is the Electric Age, where steam is turned into electricity and machines get more complex and much faster. The Midgame follows once you've mastered electricity and oil processing, and the Endgame brings the Quantum tier.[4][5][6][7][37]

First steps: steam and the Forge Hammer

The pack's Steam Age quest chapter opens with two quests. a quest in "?" asks for a Steam Bucket, and a quest in "?" asks for a Forge Hammer. Once both are done, a quest in "?" unlocks and asks for the Steam Mining Drill.[8]

Watch out: This pack changed the crafting-table recipe for the Forge Hammer, so don't trust an older video or guide for it. Check the in-pack recipe below. Later on, you can also make a Forge Hammer in an Assembler.[13]

Your first power source is the Steam Turbine. It converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb every tick, and it has the Low Voltage (LV) tier. Electric machines work like their steam versions but run on electricity and overclock recipes up to 32 EU/t. Your first priority should be Assemblers, so you can automate parts like Analog Circuits and motors.[26][27]

Once you have Analog Circuits, you can also craft the Configurable Chest. From there you'll build the Electric Blast Furnace, whose overclock is capped at 128 EU/t by default. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull moves it to MV tier.[22][27][28]

Midgame and later quests

After you've handled electricity and oil processing, the Midgame is about scaling your factory up. A later quest chapter in the pack comes back to the mod. It starts with a quest in "?" for a Forge Hammer, then branches into a quest in "?" for the Large Advanced Motor, a quest in "?" for the Uranium Quad Fuel Rod and a quest in "?" for the Blastproof Casing.[6][11]

Endgame: the Quantum tier

The Quantum tier sits at the very top. Each piece of Quantum Armor adds 25% to the chance of nullifying damage you take, and the full set makes you immune to all damage and gives you creative flight. The Quantum Barrel holds 2,147,483,647 stacks of a single item.[37]

The pack has quests for this gear too. a quest in "?" in the armor chapter asks for the Quantum Helmet, Quantum Chestplate, Quantum Leggings and Quantum Boots. a quest in "?" in the tools chapter asks for the Quantum Sword.[9][10]

Unverified The provided quest data doesn't show which quests unlock the bronze and steel groups, or how the Electric Age tiers between the Analog Circuit and the later chapter are laid out in the quest book.

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization is woven into this pack in a few ways. The pack adds recipes that use MI parts to craft endgame items from other mods, and it adds quarry and electrolyzer recipes that produce ores and dusts from other mods. Extended Industrialization machines are also built almost entirely from MI components.[13]

Endgame crafting with All the Tweaks

The pack adds its own crafting recipes for three All the Tweaks items: Improbable Probability Device, Nexium Emitter and Philosopher's Fuel. Each one leans on high-end MI gear, so late-game MI kit such as the Blastproof Casing, the Large Advanced Motor and the Uranium Quad Fuel Rod turns up here next to parts from mods like Applied Energistics 2, Mekanism, Powah and Mystical Agriculture. The recipe blocks below show exactly what each one takes.[11][13]

The quests point you there too. The chapter_2_the_star quest chapter has quests for the same three MI items: a quest in "?" for the Large Advanced Motor, a quest in "?" for the Uranium Quad Fuel Rod and a quest in "?" for the Blastproof Casing. All three come after a quest in "?", which asks for a Forge Hammer.[11]

Quarry drills and ores from other mods

The Electric Quarry is the electric version of the Steam Quarry, and the pack adds its own drill recipes for it. Each drill mines a mix of vanilla ores, All the Ores ores and MI's own ores. This makes the quarry a real supply line for other mods, not just for MI.[13][39]

Tip: The steam_age quest chapter has a quest for the Steam Quarry (a quest in "?"), followed by one for the Bronze Drill (a quest in "?").[8]

Electrolyzing dirty aluminum

The Electrolyzer splits materials into their parts using strong electric currents. The pack adds an Electrolyzer recipe for All the Ores Dirty Aluminum Dust, so MI machinery finishes off a dust from another mod's ore chain. The block below is where you will see Aluminum Dust come out, along with MI's own Oxygen and Titanium Tiny Dust.[13][35]

Extended Industrialization machines

Extended Industrialization machines are built from MI components, and you can craft them either in a crafting grid or in MI's Assembler. Keep the Basic Machine Hull, the Analog Circuit and the Steel Machine Casing in stock and most of the line is within reach, from the Electric Alloy Smelter and the Electric Brewery through to the Steel Canning Machine. The recipe blocks show the exact ingredients.[13]

Tip: MI's guide recommends automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts in Assemblers early. That pays off twice here, because those same parts go into Extended Industrialization's machines.[13][27]

MI's Steel Upgrade also works on the Bronze Bending Machine and the Bronze Composter. Each has a crafting grid route and a Packer route to the steel version, and an Unpacker recipe that reverses it. The steam_age chapter has a quest for the Steel Upgrade itself, a quest in "?".[8][13]

MI gear also shows up in the pack's general gear chapters. The basic_armor chapter has a quest for the full Quantum armor set (a quest in "?"), and the basic_tools chapter has one for the Quantum Sword (a quest in "?").[9][10]

In the tips_and_tricks chapter, quest a quest in "?" accepts the Forge Hammer as one of several options, alongside blocks from mods like Applied Energistics 2, Immersive Engineering and PneumaticCraft.[40]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization appears in five quest chapters in this pack. Most of its questline is in the steam_age chapter, which takes you from your first steam tools through bronze and then steel machines. A few more quests are spread across the chapter_2_the_star, basic_armor, basic_tools and tips_and_tricks chapters.[8][9][10][11][40]

Steam Age: getting started

Two quests in this chapter have no prerequisites. a quest in "?" asks for a Steam Bucket. a quest in "?" asks for a Forge Hammer along with one other item. Complete both to unlock a quest in "?", which asks for a Steam Mining Drill.[8]

Steam Age: the bronze tier

The bronze branch opens behind a quest from outside this mod. From there, a quest in "?" wants a Bronze Tank and a Bronze Barrel, and a quest in "?" wants a Bronze Machine Casing. That casing quest is the hub for every bronze machine quest below.[8]

Steam Age: the steel tier

The steel quests all unlock behind a quest from outside this mod. Once that is done, you can take them in any order.[8]

Quests in other chapters

In the chapter_2_the_star chapter, a quest in "?" asks for a Forge Hammer. It unlocks three quests that ask for late-game parts: a quest in "?" wants a Large Advanced Motor, a quest in "?" wants a Uranium Quad Fuel Rod, and a quest in "?" wants a Blastproof Casing.[11]

In the basic_armor chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the full quantum set: a Quantum Helmet, a Quantum Chestplate, Quantum Leggings and Quantum Boots. In the basic_tools chapter, a quest in "?" asks for a Quantum Sword and unlocks after a quest from outside this mod.[9][10]

Tip: In the tips_and_tricks chapter, a quest in "?" accepts a Forge Hammer or any one of several blocks from other mods. If you already have a Forge Hammer from the Steam Age quests, that one item covers it.[40]

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.41 guide

Modern Industrialization keeps all its settings in config/modern_industrialization.toml. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, exactly as this pack sets them.[25]

Visuals and tooltips

Technical options

datagenOnStartup is false and loadRuntimeGeneratedResources is true. You normally won't need to touch these.[25]

Unverified The pack's config file only lists the values it uses, not the mod's defaults. Which of these values the pack changed from the mod default is unconfirmed, so treat the values above as this pack's settings rather than as confirmed changes.

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 2.39 ships Modern Industrialization 2.2.34. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.9 or earlier, so it's been part of your factory-building options for a long time.[2]

Updates in recent pack releases

The pack changelogs record three recent updates to Modern Industrialization. Each one moved the mod up by a single patch version:[41][42][43]

  • All the Mods 10 2.26 updated Modern Industrialization from 2.2.31 to 2.2.32.[43]
  • All the Mods 10 2.31 updated Modern Industrialization from 2.2.32 to 2.2.33.[42]
  • All the Mods 10 2.33 updated Modern Industrialization from 2.2.33 to 2.2.34, which is the version you'll find in 2.39.[2][41]

Unverified The pack changelogs only list version numbers, and the mod's own changelogs for these jars weren't available. This guide can't confirm which fixes, balance changes or new content came with each update.
