What is Mekanism?

1 part

Mekanism is a big tech mod that brings a suite of low, mid and high tier machinery, high-end energy generators, advanced transmission systems and intricate processing mechanisms. Its headline feature is ore processing: with its purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization technologies, you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot production per ore, given enough infrastructure and energy.[1]

It's built around gradual technological progression, so there's a tier of machinery for whatever stage of gameplay you've reached. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or even 9 (ultimate) different items at once in a single machine. There are also fun extras like the hydrogen-powered Jetpack with multiple togglable flight modes, the Robit companion, the Digital Miner with its filtering, and sorting and filtering item networks built from Logistical Transporters.[1]

Mekanism Generators is the official addon that powers all of this. Without it you'd need another mod to make energy for your machines. It adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator, plus the big multiblocks: the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools, including Paxels (an axe, pickaxe and shovel in one), for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. It also adds Paxels for the vanilla Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond tiers.[3]

All the Mods 10 3.2 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools, all at version 10.7.14. They've been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[4]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Mekanism quest chapter. Early on it asks you for a Heat Generator and a Metallurgic Infuser. The infuser quest, a quest in "?", is the big hub. It opens up quests for the Enrichment Chamber, Osmium Compressor, Basic Energy Cube, Basic Control Circuit, Infused Alloy, the Solar, Wind and Bio-Generators, the Teleporter and the Quantum Entangloporter.[5]

From there the chapter climbs through the tiers. Tanks and energy cubes go from basic up to ultimate, alloys go from Infused Alloy to Reinforced Alloy to Atomic Alloy, and tier installers let you upgrade the machines you've already placed.[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

3 parts

Before any Mekanism machine does anything, it needs power. That power comes from the Mekanism Generators addon, which adds the Heat Generator, Solar Generator, Wind Generator, Bio-Generator and more. Without it you'd need a different mod to power your machines.[2]

In this pack's Mekanism quest chapter, the Heat Generator quest a quest in "?" and the Metallurgic Infuser quest a quest in "?" unlock at the same point. Get both done early. The Heat Generator is how you start making power, and the infuser opens up almost everything else in the chapter.[5][6]

Why the Metallurgic Infuser comes first

The Metallurgic Infuser quest is the big hub of the chapter. Finishing it unlocks quests for the Basic Control Circuit, Infused Alloy, Enrichment Chamber, Osmium Compressor, Energized Smelter, Basic Energy Cube, Energy Tablet, Basic Tier Installer and the Solar, Wind and Bio-Generators.[5]

It also makes your first circuits. The Basic Control Circuit is made in the Metallurgic Infuser, not at a crafting table. Machines like the Crusher and the Chemical Infuser need a basic circuit, so you want the infuser running early.[7]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Build a Heat Generator (a quest in "?") so your machines have power.[5][6]
  2. Craft the Metallurgic Infuser (a quest in "?") to unlock the rest of the early quests.[5]
  3. Use the infuser to make a Basic Control Circuit (a quest in "?").[5][7]
  4. Make Infused Alloy (a quest in "?"). Its quest unlocks the upgrade quests, like the Speed and Energy Upgrades, plus Reinforced Alloy.[5]
  5. Once you have both the circuit and the alloy quests done, the Advanced Control Circuit quest (a quest in "?") opens up.[5]
  6. Set up an Enrichment Chamber (a quest in "?") and an Osmium Compressor (a quest in "?"). The compressor quest leads to Refined Obsidian and Refined Glowstone Ingots.[5]
  7. Grab a Basic Energy Cube (a quest in "?") to store your power.[5]

Handy early extras

The Energy Tablet quest (a quest in "?") leads to the Configurator quest (a quest in "?"). The Configurator is the tool you use to change the settings of Mekanism blocks, so it's worth making early.[5][8]

How does Mekanism work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 5.0 guide

Mekanism is built around tiered machinery. You start with low-tier machines and work up through mid and high tiers. Along the way you'll use high-end generators, advanced transmission systems and multi-step processing chains. The core idea is simple: feed machines power, move resources between them with transmitters, and upgrade everything as your base grows.[1]

One important thing up front: Mekanism by itself doesn't generate power. The generators come from the Mekanism Generators addon. Without it you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[2]

Making and storing power

Mekanism Generators gives you a whole ladder of power options: the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator. The big multiblocks are the Fission Reactor, the Fusion Reactor and the Turbine.[2]

  • The Heat Generator is the classic starting point for making power.[6]
  • The Solar Generator gives you renewable energy, but only during the day.[6]
  • The Wind Generator only works well if there's actually wind where you place it.[6]
  • The Gas-Burning Generator burns Ethene for power.[6]

All the Mods 10 adds its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator, so check the recipe below rather than any older tutorial. It builds on the Bio-Generator.[9]

Pack-added recipe in All the Mods 10

To buffer your extra power, build an Energy Cube. It stores the excess your generators produce so your machines can draw from it when they need it.[10]

Transmitters: moving energy, fluids, chemicals, items and heat

Mekanism moves every resource type through its own dedicated transmitter. Here is what each one carries.[10][11]

  • Universal Cables carry energy.[10]
  • Mechanical Pipes carry fluids.[10]
  • Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals.[10]
  • Thermodynamic Conductors carry heat.[10]
  • Logistical Transporters carry items. The diversion variant gives you precise control over which sides items go to.[10][11]
Tip: You don't have to rip out your old transmitters when you tier up. Upgrade them right in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them.[10]
Tip: Big transmitter networks can cost you FPS. In this pack accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is off, so transmitters render their contents. Turn it on to render solid sides instead of the contents, which should help performance.[11]

Machines, tiers and factories

Mekanism machines can be upgraded into factories that work on several items at once in a single block. A basic factory processes 3 items, advanced processes 5, elite processes 7 and ultimate processes 9. That replaces whole walls of furnaces with one compact machine. You can craft a factory directly or upgrade an existing machine with a Tier Installer.[1][10]

Control circuits are the backbone of Mekanism's tier system. You'll see them in recipes across the whole mod, and each new circuit tier adds more pathways. Here are the higher tiers as they're crafted in this pack.[9][10]

Each machine has its own settings. The Configurator is your tool for changing them. Once you've set one machine up the way you like, use a Configuration Card to copy that configuration onto another machine. This saves a lot of time when you build rows of identical machines.[10]

Ore processing

Smelting ore straight into ingots wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's ore processing uses purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to get more out of each ore. With enough infrastructure and energy you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore.[1]

The first step up is the Enrichment Chamber, which increases your material efficiency. The top of the chain involves the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and the Washer.[10]

Storage

  • Fluid Tanks store your fluids.[10]
  • Chemical Tanks, starting with the Basic Chemical Tank, hold almost all of your chemicals.[10]
  • QIO Drives store your items, and higher drive tiers increase the storage bandwidth. You browse the stored items from a QIO Dashboard. In this pack it shows 8 slots wide and 4 slots tall by default, set by qio.slotsWide and qio.slotsTall.[10][11]

Multiblocks and the Fission Reactor

When a Mekanism multiblock forms correctly, you'll see red sparkles around it. That's controlled by rendering.particle.multiblockFormation, which is on in this pack. If you turn it off, you get a message on the action bar instead.[11]

Multiblock contents are rendered out to 256 blocks in this pack, far more than the 64 vanilla uses for most blocks. Lowering rendering.berRange can improve performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in more.[11]

The Fission Reactor scales with how you build it. Here is how its size and layout affect it.[6]

  • Each fuel assembly you add increases both the reactor's fuel and waste capacity and its maximum burn rate.[6]
  • Every casing block adds heat capacity, so a bigger reactor takes more energy to raise its temperature.[6]
  • Cooled and heated coolant capacity both scale with the reactor's volume.[6]
  • Burning fission fuel produces heat for every whole mB burned.[6]
Watch out: Watch your reactor's damage level. Once it passes 100%, there's a chance of a catastrophic meltdown, and that chance rises the further damage climbs. If meltdowns are disabled in the config, the reactor forces itself off instead and stays off until its damage is back at safe levels. Letting waste build up past a set percentage of the waste tank also triggers excess waste.[6]

Unverified The sources don't show whether meltdowns are enabled in All the Mods 10 5.0, or which fission values the pack uses. Treat reactor safety as if meltdowns are possible.

Nuclear experiments can irradiate the area around you. A Geiger Counter shows how bad the environmental radiation is.[10]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

6 parts

The pack's Mekanism chapter is built around one key machine: the Metallurgic Infuser. Its quest, a quest in "?", unlocks most of the chapter. Once it's done, a large set of quests opens up, from the Enrichment Chamber and Osmium Compressor to generators, the Jetpack and the Atomic Disassembler. The Heat Generator quest unlocks from the same earlier quest as the Infuser, so it makes a natural first power source.[5]

Early steps

  1. Build the Metallurgic Infuser (a quest in "?") and a Heat Generator (a quest in "?").[5]
  2. Use the Infuser to make Infused Alloy (a quest in "?") and your first Basic Control Circuit (a quest in "?").[5]
  3. Set up an Enrichment Chamber (a quest in "?") and a Osmium Compressor (a quest in "?"). The Compressor quest leads on to Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot.[5]
  4. Grab an Energy Tablet (a quest in "?"). It unlocks the Configurator quest and, together with the Chargepad, the Robit quest.[5]

The four tiers

Mekanism gear comes in four tiers: basic, advanced, elite and ultimate. The pack's quests walk you up each ladder one step at a time. There are separate chains for chemical tanks, fluid tanks, energy cubes, universal cables, mechanical pipes, pressurized tubes, thermodynamic conductors and logistical transporters. The tier installers follow the same pattern, from Basic Tier Installer up to Ultimate Tier Installer.[5]

Alloys and circuits drive those upgrades. Infused Alloy leads to Reinforced Alloy, which leads to Atomic Alloy. Each circuit quest needs the previous circuit plus the matching alloy quest. For example, Elite Control Circuit (a quest in "?") comes after the advanced circuit and Reinforced Alloy quests. Ultimate Control Circuit (a quest in "?") comes after the elite circuit and Atomic Alloy quests.[5]

Tip: From the advanced tier up, every control circuit has two recipes: a normal crafting recipe and a Metallurgic Infuser recipe. Pick whichever fits your setup.[7]

The Enrichment Chamber quest opens the Electrolytic Separator and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber. The Separator path continues to the Purification Chamber, then the Crusher, then Bio Fuel, Substrate, HDPE Pellet and finally HDPE Sheet. A separate branch runs from the Chemical Injection Chamber to a Thermal Evaporation setup, then to heaters and the Chemical Infuser. The Chemical Dissolution Chamber opens the Oxidizer, Crystallizer, Rotary Condensentrator and Washer quests.[5]

Pack-specific recipes

The pack adds its own recipes for several Mekanism items: the Digital Miner, the Gas-Burning Generator, the Steel Pickaxe and Steel Sword, and the Creative Energy Cube. The Creative Energy Cube has two pack recipes: a crafting recipe and a Powah energizing recipe. Check the in-pack versions below rather than relying on older guides.[7]

Endgame: reactors and multiblocks

The reactors chapter starts with the Chemical Crystallizer. It branches into Lithium Dust, which leads to the Induction Matrix quests, and into the full Hazmat suit, which leads to the Fission Reactor casing and glass. From the Fission Reactor casing and glass you move on to fuel assemblies, control rods, ports and logic adapters.[12]

A second chain runs from Yellow Cake Uranium through the Chemical Oxidizer, the Chemical Infuser and the Isotopic Centrifuge. It continues to the Radioactive Waste Barrel and then the Industrial Turbine parts. The Polonium Pellet quest unlocks the Fusion Reactor. Polonium and Plutonium Pellet together unlock the SPS, which leads to the Supercharged Coil. The Fusion Reactor path continues through the Laser Focus Matrix and lasers to the Hohlraum. There's also a quest for the Antimatter Pellet.[12]

Tools and armor

Mekanism Tools gear shows up in the pack's general tool and armor chapters rather than the Mekanism chapter. You'll find swords and pickaxes in bronze, lapis lazuli, osmium, steel, refined glowstone and refined obsidian, plus a full armor set quest for each material. The armor chapter also has a quest for the complete MekaSuit.[13][14]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

4 parts

Mekanism is tied into a lot of other mods in this pack. The big links are Allthemodium ore processing, the creative storage recipes, a batch of pack-added sawing recipes for modded wood, and a few endgame crafts where Mekanism parts sit next to items from other tech mods.[7]

Allthemodium ore processing

Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium all have their own Mekanism processing recipes, so you can put them through your ore-multiplying setup like any other ore. The purifying step turns ores, raw ore, raw blocks or shards into clumps such as Allthemodium Clump. The injecting step turns them into shards such as Allthemodium Shard. The dissolution step turns them into dirty slurry.[7]

Watch out: The pack has changed the injecting recipes that turn Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium crystals into shards. Check the recipe below or in-game rather than trusting the default Mekanism or Allthemodium setup.[7]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mekanism?

3 parts

Mekanism shows up in a lot of places in this pack's questbook. Two chapters are built entirely around it: a main Mekanism chapter that walks you through machines, upgrades and transmitters, and a reactors chapter for the big multiblocks. Several general chapters also accept Mekanism items as one of their options.[5][12][15][16][17]

The Mekanism chapter

The key quest here is a quest in "?", which asks for a Metallurgic Infuser. Almost everything branches off it. That includes the Enrichment Chamber, Osmium Compressor, Energized Smelter, Basic Energy Cube, Jetpack, Atomic Disassembler, the Teleporter and the Quantum Entangloporter. The Solar, Wind and Bio-Generator quests from Mekanism Generators branch off it too.[5]

The reactors chapter

This chapter opens with a quest in "?", which asks for a Chemical Crystallizer. From there you branch into Lithium Dust, which leads to the induction matrix quests, and into a full hazmat suit, which leads to the fission reactor casing, ports, fuel assemblies and logic adapter.[12]

  1. Fuel chain: Yellow Cake Uranium, then the Chemical Oxidizer, then the Chemical Infuser (which also needs the fluorite and Dissolution Chamber quest), then the Isotopic Centrifuge, then the Radioactive Waste Barrel.[12]
  2. Turbine: a quest in "?" asks for turbine casing and structural glass. It unlocks the rotor parts, the valve, vent and condenser, and the Electromagnetic Coil.[12]
  3. Fusion: the Polonium Pellet quest leads to the fusion reactor parts, then the Laser Focus Matrix, then the lasers, and finally a quest in "?" for a Hohlraum.[12]
  4. SPS: the polonium and plutonium pellet quests together unlock a quest in "?", which includes 58 Reactor Glass. That quest then leads to the Supercharged Coil.[12]

Other chapters

The basic tools and basic armor chapters have quests for every Mekanism Tools material, and the armor chapter also has a full MekaSuit quest, a quest in "?". The basic power chapter covers generators, energy cubes, cables, the Entangloporter and induction parts. The basic logistics chapter starts at a quest in "?" with a Configurator, and then accepts any tier of each transmitter.[13][14][15][16]

Tip: Early main questline quests accept Mekanism items as alternatives. A Basic Fluid Tank, Basic Universal Cable or Basic Energy Cube can complete them, so your first Mekanism builds count double.[17]

A few other chapters ask for single Mekanism items. These include the Creative Energy Cube, an Antimatter Pellet, Module Gravitational Modulating Unit, Emerald Dust, and two Configurators in a quest in "?".[18][19][20][21]

Which Mekanism config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism's settings live in the config/Mekanism folder, split across client.toml (visuals, sounds and GUI layout), common.toml (display units and a few shared toggles), general.toml (machines, multiblocks and world interaction) and gear.toml (every tool, armour and gadget value). Here are the ones you're most likely to touch in All the Mods 10, with the values this pack ships.[22][23][24][25]

Units and display

  • energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings show FE/RF instead of Joules. Switch it to JOULES if you'd rather read the numbers the config files use.[23]
  • temperatureUnit is KELVIN; the other choices are Celsius, Rankine, Fahrenheit and Ambient.[23]
  • holidays is false in this pack, so holiday greetings and easter eggs are off and default-skin Robits won't get randomised skins.[23]
  • enableDecayTimers is true, so radiation readings above safe levels show how long they'll take to decay.[23]

Performance and visuals

If Mekanism is costing you frames, client.toml is the first place to look. rendering.berRange is 256 blocks, which is how far multiblock contents and wind generators render; lowering it will likely increase performance at the cost of things popping in. accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is false, meaning cables, pipes, tubes, transporters and conductors render their contents. Set it to true if your transmitter networks are causing FPS issues.[22]

HUD and QIO

The MekaSuit HUD is enabled with hud.scale at 0.6, and hud.opacity sits well below fully opaque if you want to make it more solid. hud.jitter is 6, which controls how much the HUD sways when you move your head, and hud.reverse is off. The QIO Dashboard opens 8 slots wide by 4 tall, sorted by name ascending, with the search bar auto-focused.[22]

World interaction

  • allowChunkloading is true, so the Anchor Upgrade and Dimensional Stabilizer both work.[25]
  • aestheticWorldDamage is true: lasers can break blocks and the Flamethrower can start fires.[25]
  • cardboard_box.modBlacklist contains the waystones and hyperbox mod ids in this pack, so Cardboard Boxes can't pick up blocks from either mod.[25]
  • The Digital Miner reaches a maximum radius of 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades, with a 12x energy multiplier in silk touch mode. Dragging items from a recipe viewer into filter slots is enabled.[25]

Gear tweaks worth knowing

Watch out: The Digital Miner's radius config warns that raising it can hurt stability and memory usage, and strongly recommends leaving it at the default value.[25]

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 3.2 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools all on version 10.7.14. All three have been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so they've been part of your playthrough from the early days.[4]

The three mods always update together. Every pack release in the changelogs bumps Mekanism, Generators and Tools to the same new version at the same time, so you'll never have a mismatched set.[26][27][28][29][30]

  4. All the Mods 10 2.42: all three mods updated from 10.7.12 to 10.7.13.[27]
  5. All the Mods 10 2.47: all three mods updated from 10.7.13 to 10.7.14, the same version that ships in All the Mods 10 3.2.[4][26]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record version numbers, and the mod's own changelogs aren't available here. What actually changed in each of these Mekanism updates (bug fixes, balance tweaks or new features) couldn't be confirmed.
