What is Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism is one of the big tech mods: machines, energy generation, gadgets and serious ore processing. It gives you tiers of machinery from early to late game. Instead of smelting ore straight into ingots, you can build processing lines that double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore. That takes enough infrastructure and energy to run it.[1]

It also cuts down on clutter. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once, so you don't need walls of furnaces.[1]

Beyond processing, you get transmitters for items, fluids, gases, energy and heat, plus Logistical Transporters for sorting and filtering. There are also fun extras like the Jetpack, your own little Robit companion, and the Digital Miner to automate your mining.[1]

The three mods in this guide

  • Mekanism is the core mod with the machines, transport, tools and gadgets. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 10.7.14.[1][2]
  • Mekanism Generators is the power side. It adds the Heat, Gas-Burning, Bio, Solar, Advanced Solar and Wind generators, plus the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine. Without it you would need another mod to power your machines. The pack includes version 10.7.14.[2][3]
  • Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools, including Paxels (an axe, pickaxe and shovel in one tool), made from Mekanism materials and some vanilla ones. The pack includes version 10.7.14.[2][4]

Where it fits in the pack

All three mods have been part of All the Mods 10 since version 2.25 or earlier. The pack has two quest chapters for them: "mekanism" and "mekanism_reactors".[2][5][6]

The "mekanism_reactors" chapter covers the late-game content. It includes the Robit and Digital Miner, the Atomic Disassembler and Meka-Tool, and induction energy storage. It also has thermal evaporation, fission reactor parts and QIO storage, plus a big branch of MekaSuit modules that starts from the Modification Station quest a quest in "?".[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism's big promise is better ore processing. Every time you smelt an ore straight into an ingot, you waste most of what you mined. With enough machines and energy, Mekanism can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore. Getting there takes a few foundation pieces first, so here's where to start.[1]

Step 1: Get some power

Mekanism machines run on energy, and Mekanism Generators is the official addon that produces it. Without it, you'd need another mod to power your Mekanism machines. Its options include the Heat Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Wind Generator and Gas-Burning Generator, with reactors and turbines much later on.[3]

The mod's own advancement points you to the Heat Generator as the way to start making power. The Solar Generator and Wind Generator are the renewable options.[3][7]

Step 2: Your first circuits

The Basic Control Circuit shows up in a huge number of early recipes, including the Crusher, the Chemical Infuser, the Chemical Oxidizer and the Basic Bin. It's made by metallurgic infusing rather than at a crafting table.[8]

When you need an Advanced Control Circuit, you have a choice: another infusing recipe, or a crafting recipe that uses Infused Alloy.[8]

Step 3: Steel Casing and the Crusher

The Steel Casing is the frame for most Mekanism machines. The Crusher, Chemical Infuser, Combiner, Chemical Washer and Chemical Crystallizer all need one, so it pays to make a few.[8]

The Crusher is a great early machine. Among other things, it turns plant materials like leaves, kelp, crops, mushrooms and many other plants into Bio Fuel.[8]

Step 4: Handy tools and storage

Grab a Configurator early. It lets you change the settings of Mekanism blocks, which you'll do constantly once machines start piping into each other.[8][9]

Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. It also adds Paxels, a pickaxe, axe and shovel in one, including versions for vanilla materials. A Paxel is a nice quality-of-life upgrade while you gather resources.[4][10]

For storage, the Basic Bin and Basic Chemical Tank are cheap early builds. You'll need that chemical tank later for machines like the Chemical Infuser and Chemical Oxidizer.[8]

Pack changes to know about

Watch out: The pack uses its own recipes for the Digital Miner and the Gas-Burning Generator, so don't follow older Mekanism tutorials for them. The pack's Gas-Burning Generator is built from a Bio-Generator plus late-game materials, so plan on another power source early on.[8]

How does Mekanism work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 5.0 guide

Mekanism is built around tiered machinery. You start with low-tier machines and work up through mid and high tiers. Along the way you'll use high-end generators, advanced transmission systems and multi-step processing chains. The core idea is simple: feed machines power, move resources between them with transmitters, and upgrade everything as your base grows.[1]

One important thing up front: Mekanism by itself doesn't generate power. The generators come from the Mekanism Generators addon. Without it you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[3]

Making and storing power

Mekanism Generators gives you a whole ladder of power options: the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator. The big multiblocks are the Fission Reactor, the Fusion Reactor and the Turbine.[3]

  • The Heat Generator is the classic starting point for making power.[7]
  • The Solar Generator gives you renewable energy, but only during the day.[7]
  • The Wind Generator only works well if there's actually wind where you place it.[7]
  • The Gas-Burning Generator burns Ethene for power.[7]

All the Mods 10 adds its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator, so check the recipe below rather than any older tutorial. It builds on the Bio-Generator.[11]

Pack-added recipe in All the Mods 10

To buffer your extra power, build an Energy Cube. It stores the excess your generators produce so your machines can draw from it when they need it.[12]

Transmitters: moving energy, fluids, chemicals, items and heat

Mekanism moves every resource type through its own dedicated transmitter. Here is what each one carries.[12][13]

  • Universal Cables carry energy.[12]
  • Mechanical Pipes carry fluids.[12]
  • Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals.[12]
  • Thermodynamic Conductors carry heat.[12]
  • Logistical Transporters carry items. The diversion variant gives you precise control over which sides items go to.[12][13]
Tip: You don't have to rip out your old transmitters when you tier up. Upgrade them right in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them.[12]
Tip: Big transmitter networks can cost you FPS. In this pack accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is off, so transmitters render their contents. Turn it on to render solid sides instead of the contents, which should help performance.[13]

Machines, tiers and factories

Mekanism machines can be upgraded into factories that work on several items at once in a single block. A basic factory processes 3 items, advanced processes 5, elite processes 7 and ultimate processes 9. That replaces whole walls of furnaces with one compact machine. You can craft a factory directly or upgrade an existing machine with a Tier Installer.[1][12]

Control circuits are the backbone of Mekanism's tier system. You'll see them in recipes across the whole mod, and each new circuit tier adds more pathways. Here are the higher tiers as they're crafted in this pack.[11][12]

Each machine has its own settings. The Configurator is your tool for changing them. Once you've set one machine up the way you like, use a Configuration Card to copy that configuration onto another machine. This saves a lot of time when you build rows of identical machines.[12]

Tip: In this pack accessibility.allowModeScroll is on. That means you can change the mode of a held Mekanism item by holding sneak and using the scroll wheel.[13]

Ore processing

Smelting ore straight into ingots wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's ore processing uses purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to get more out of each ore. With enough infrastructure and energy you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore.[1]

The first step up is the Enrichment Chamber, which increases your material efficiency. The top of the chain involves the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and the Washer.[12]

Storage

  • Fluid Tanks store your fluids.[12]
  • Chemical Tanks, starting with the Basic Chemical Tank, hold almost all of your chemicals.[12]
  • QIO Drives store your items, and higher drive tiers increase the storage bandwidth. You browse the stored items from a QIO Dashboard. In this pack it shows 8 slots wide and 4 slots tall by default, set by qio.slotsWide and qio.slotsTall.[12][13]

Pack-added recipe

Multiblocks and the Fission Reactor

When a Mekanism multiblock forms correctly, you'll see red sparkles around it. That's controlled by rendering.particle.multiblockFormation, which is on in this pack. If you turn it off, you get a message on the action bar instead.[13]

Multiblock contents are rendered out to 256 blocks in this pack, far more than the 64 vanilla uses for most blocks. Lowering rendering.berRange can improve performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in more.[13]

The Fission Reactor scales with how you build it. Here is how its size and layout affect it.[7]

  • Each fuel assembly you add increases both the reactor's fuel and waste capacity and its maximum burn rate.[7]
  • Every casing block adds heat capacity, so a bigger reactor takes more energy to raise its temperature.[7]
  • Cooled and heated coolant capacity both scale with the reactor's volume.[7]
  • Burning fission fuel produces heat for every whole mB burned.[7]
Watch out: Watch your reactor's damage level. Once it passes 100%, there's a chance of a catastrophic meltdown, and that chance rises the further damage climbs. If meltdowns are disabled in the config, the reactor forces itself off instead and stays off until its damage is back at safe levels. Letting waste build up past a set percentage of the waste tank also triggers excess waste.[7]

Unverified The sources don't show whether meltdowns are enabled in All the Mods 10 5.0, or which fission values the pack uses. Treat reactor safety as if meltdowns are possible.

Nuclear experiments can irradiate the area around you. A Geiger Counter shows how bad the environmental radiation is.[12]

Automated mining

The Digital Miner is Mekanism's automated mining machine. All the Mods 10 replaces its crafting with a pack-specific recipe, so use the one shown here.[11][12]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism progression in this pack runs through two quest chapters. The main Mekanism chapter covers your first machines, generators, logistics and upgrades. A second reactors chapter takes you from uranium processing all the way to antimatter and the MekaSuit. Use the main chapter to get set up, then move into the reactors chapter once your base is running.[5][6]

Getting started: the Metallurgic Infuser and Steel Casing

Your first real milestone is the Metallurgic Infuser in a quest in "?". It unlocks quests for the Basic Control Circuit, Infused Alloy and the Teleporter. Once you also have a Crusher, it opens Refined Obsidian Dust too. In this pack the basic circuit is made in the Metallurgic Infuser, not at a crafting table.[6][8]

Metallurgic Infusing (mekanism)

  • any osmium ingot
  • 20× any redstone

The Steel Casing in a quest in "?" is the big hub of the chapter. Almost every machine quest unlocks from it, including the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Energized Smelter, Precision Sawmill, Electrolytic Separator, Chemical Oxidizer, Chemical Infuser, Rotary Condensentrator and Pressurized Reaction Chamber. It also leads to the Advanced Control Circuit quest. The upgrade quests need both Steel Casing and Structural Glass: speed, energy, filter, muffling, chemical and stone generator upgrades.[6]

On the power side, the Energy Tablet in a quest in "?" unlocks the generator quests: the Heat Generator, Solar Generator, Wind Generator, Bio-Generator and Gas-Burning Generator. It also unlocks the energy cube, Universal Cable and Chargepad quests. For logistics, the Configurator in a quest in "?" opens the pipe, pressurized tube, logistical transporter and thermodynamic conductor quests.[6]

The Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate tiers

Tiered gear comes in Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate versions. The tier quests accept any of them, so a Basic item is enough to tick them off. This applies to energy cubes, Universal Cables, mechanical pipes, pressurized tubes, logistical transporters, thermodynamic conductors and chemical tanks. The factory quests work the same way: the machine or any tier of the matching factory counts.[6]

Control circuits drive the whole tier ladder. Each circuit above Basic has two recipes in this pack: one at the crafting table and one in the Metallurgic Infuser. Pick whichever suits your setup.[8]

Fission: your first reactor

  1. Start with a quest in "?": sulfur, a Chemical Oxidizer, an Electrolytic Separator and a Chemical Infuser.[5]
  2. Branch into Yellow Cake Uranium with the Enrichment Chamber in a quest in "?". Then set up the Rotary Condensentrator and Chemical Dissolution Chamber line in a quest in "?".[5]
  3. Both branches meet at the Isotopic Centrifuge in a quest in "?", which leads to the Fission Fuel Assembly and Control Rod Assembly.[5]
  4. Build the reactor in a quest in "?". It asks for Fission Reactor Casing, 4 Fission Reactor Port, a Fission Reactor Logic Adapter and the assemblies.[5]

After fission, the chapter opens the Radioactive Waste Barrel and a full hazmat suit. A Basic Chemical Tank quest then leads to the Industrial Turbine parts. The complete turbine in a quest in "?" needs 12 Turbine Vent. Separately, a quest in "?" covers the Thermoelectric Boiler parts.[5]

Endgame: polonium, antimatter and fusion

The waste barrel quest opens the Solar Neutron Activator and Isotopic Centrifuge paths. Those lead to Polonium Pellet and Plutonium Pellet, and you need both for the SPS port quest. The full SPS build in a quest in "?" asks for 4 SPS Port, 2 Supercharged Coil and 64 plus 58 Structural Glass. That unlocks Antimatter Pellet, which in turn opens the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer and all four MekaSuit piece quests.[5]

The fusion reactor in a quest in "?" needs three earlier quests: the Laser Focus Matrix (from the Laser and Laser Amplifier quests), the Hohlraum and the Fusion Reactor Port. The fusion port quest itself unlocks after polonium.[5]

The reactors chapter also has side branches you can do in any order. The Induction Matrix in a quest in "?" needs 32 Induction Casing and 2 Induction Port. The Modification Station unlocks every module quest, the Atomic Disassembler leads to the Meka-Tool, and the QIO Drive Array opens QIO storage.[5]

Unverified Storage capacities and transfer rates for each tier, and exactly how tier installers upgrade placed machines, could not be confirmed for this pack.

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

5 parts

Mekanism is woven into a lot of this pack's progression. Its processing machines handle other mods' ores and logs, its high-end parts show up in other mods' endgame crafts, and the pack adds its own recipes that tie Mekanism's creative items to endgame materials.[8]

Processing Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium

Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium all run through Mekanism's ore processing chain. Dissolution with Liquid Sulfuric Acid turns their ores, raw ores and raw blocks into dirty slurry. Injecting with Liquid Hydrogen Chloride gives shards like Allthemodium Shard. Purifying with Liquid Oxygen gives clumps like Unobtainium Clump.[8]

The recipes that turn crystals into shards for all three metals have been changed by the pack. Check the in-game version rather than an older guide.[8]

Quests that mix in other mods

The Mekanism reactors quest chapter pulls in a couple of items from outside Mekanism. a quest in "?" asks for Sulfur along with a Chemical Oxidizer, Electrolytic Separator and Chemical Infuser. a quest in "?" asks for Fluorite alongside a Rotary Condensentrator, Chemical Infuser and Chemical Dissolution Chamber.[5]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism quests in this pack are split across the main mekanism chapter and a separate mekanism_reactors chapter. Mekanism Generators items show up in both. The main chapter covers your early machines, energy and logistics, and the reactors chapter takes you all the way to antimatter and the MekaSuit.[5][6]

The main Mekanism chapter

The core line starts at the Metallurgic Infuser quest a quest in "?". That unlocks your first Basic Control Circuit (a quest in "?"), Infused Alloy (a quest in "?"), the Teleporter (a quest in "?") and, together with the Crusher quest, Refined Obsidian Dust (a quest in "?").[6]

  1. Craft redstone and a Basic Control Circuit in a quest in "?". This also opens the tier installer quest a quest in "?".[6]
  2. Move up to Infused Alloy and an Advanced Control Circuit in a quest in "?".[6]
  3. Make Reinforced Alloy and an Elite Control Circuit in a quest in "?".[6]
  4. Finish the ladder with Atomic Alloy and an Ultimate Control Circuit in a quest in "?".[6]

Infused Alloy also leads to the Energy Tablet quest a quest in "?". That quest branches into the power quests: Heat, Gas-Burning, Bio, Solar and Wind generators, plus energy cubes, universal cables and the Chargepad. The Chargepad quest a quest in "?" then opens the gear quests, including the Jetpack, Free Runners, scuba gear, Electric Bow and Flamethrower.[6]

The Steel Casing quest a quest in "?" is the machine hub. It unlocks single-machine quests like the Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Energized Smelter, Precision Sawmill, Electrolytic Separator and Pressurized Reaction Chamber. Combined with Structural Glass (a quest in "?"), it also unlocks the upgrade quests for speed, energy, filter, muffling, chemical and stone generator upgrades.[6]

Several Steel Casing quests then chain into bigger setups. For example, a quest in "?" asks for an Electric Pump, 33 Thermal Evaporation Blocks, a controller, 2 valves and a separator, and it leads to a quest in "?" and then a quest in "?". Likewise, a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", which wants a Chemical Infuser, Dissolution Chamber, Washer and Crystallizer.[6]

Logistics branches off the Configurator quest a quest in "?". Its pipe and tube quests lead to fluid and chemical tanks, and both of those feed into the Dynamic Tank quest a quest in "?".[6]

The reactors chapter

This chapter has several starting points with no prerequisites. The Robit leads to the Digital Miner, and the Atomic Disassembler leads to the Meka-Tool. The Modification Station quest a quest in "?" unlocks a long list of module quests. The QIO Drive Array opens the QIO quests. Finally, the induction quests end in a quest in "?", which asks for 32 Induction Casing and 2 Induction Ports.[5]

  1. Start fission prep with a quest in "?". It branches into a quest in "?" (Yellow Cake Uranium) and a quest in "?", and both of those feed the Isotopic Centrifuge quest a quest in "?".[5]
  2. Get the Fission Fuel Assembly and Control Rod Assembly in a quest in "?".[5]
  3. Build the fission reactor in a quest in "?": casing, 4 ports, a logic adapter, a fuel assembly and a control rod.[5]
  4. After the reactor, the waste barrel quest leads to hazmat gear, Polonium Pellets and Plutonium Pellets. The chemical tank quest leads to the turbine parts and then the full turbine in a quest in "?", which wants 12 Turbine Vents among other parts.[5]
  5. Polonium unlocks the Fusion Reactor Port quest. Together with the Laser Focus Matrix and Hohlraum quests, that leads to the fusion reactor build in a quest in "?".[5]
  6. Polonium and Plutonium lead to the SPS in a quest in "?": 64 plus 58 Structural Glass, 4 SPS Ports and 2 Supercharged Coils.[5]
  7. Antimatter Pellets (a quest in "?") cap the chapter by unlocking the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer and all four MekaSuit piece quests.[5]

The boiler has its own branch off the Fission Reactor Port. It runs through a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" to a quest in "?", which asks for a Boiler Casing, 6 Structural Glass, 4 Boiler Valves, a Pressure Disperser and a Superheating Element.[5]

Unverified The main chapter's quest list was cut off partway, so it may contain more quests than listed here. It's also not confirmed whether any Mekanism Tools items appear in the basic_tools chapter.

Which Mekanism config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism's settings live in the config/Mekanism folder, split across client.toml (visuals, sounds and GUI layout), common.toml (display units and a few shared toggles), general.toml (machines, multiblocks and world interaction) and gear.toml (every tool, armour and gadget value). Here are the ones you're most likely to touch in All the Mods 10, with the values this pack ships.[14][15][16][17]

Units and display

  • energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings show FE/RF instead of Joules. Switch it to JOULES if you'd rather read the numbers the config files use.[15]
  • temperatureUnit is KELVIN; the other choices are Celsius, Rankine, Fahrenheit and Ambient.[15]
  • holidays is false in this pack, so holiday greetings and easter eggs are off and default-skin Robits won't get randomised skins.[15]
  • enableDecayTimers is true, so radiation readings above safe levels show how long they'll take to decay.[15]

Performance and visuals

If Mekanism is costing you frames, client.toml is the first place to look. rendering.berRange is 256 blocks, which is how far multiblock contents and wind generators render; lowering it will likely increase performance at the cost of things popping in. accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is false, meaning cables, pipes, tubes, transporters and conductors render their contents. Set it to true if your transmitter networks are causing FPS issues.[14]

HUD and QIO

The MekaSuit HUD is enabled with hud.scale at 0.6, and hud.opacity sits well below fully opaque if you want to make it more solid. hud.jitter is 6, which controls how much the HUD sways when you move your head, and hud.reverse is off. The QIO Dashboard opens 8 slots wide by 4 tall, sorted by name ascending, with the search bar auto-focused.[14]

World interaction

  • allowChunkloading is true, so the Anchor Upgrade and Dimensional Stabilizer both work.[17]
  • aestheticWorldDamage is true: lasers can break blocks and the Flamethrower can start fires.[17]
  • cardboard_box.modBlacklist contains the waystones and hyperbox mod ids in this pack, so Cardboard Boxes can't pick up blocks from either mod.[17]
  • The Digital Miner reaches a maximum radius of 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades, with a 12x energy multiplier in silk touch mode. Dragging items from a recipe viewer into filter slots is enabled.[17]

Gear tweaks worth knowing

Watch out: The Digital Miner's radius config warns that raising it can hurt stability and memory usage, and strongly recommends leaving it at the default value.[17]

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools at version 10.7.14. All three have been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier.[2]

Across the pack's releases, the three Mekanism mods have always been updated together. Every changelog entry below bumps Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools to the same version, so they always match.[18][19][20][21][22]

Updates by pack release

  • All the Mods 10 2.37: Mekanism, Generators and Tools updated from 10.7.8 to 10.7.9.[22]
  • All the Mods 10 2.38: Mekanism, Generators and Tools updated from 10.7.9 to 10.7.10.[21]
  • All the Mods 10 2.40: Mekanism, Generators and Tools updated from 10.7.10 straight to 10.7.12.[20]
  • All the Mods 10 2.42: Mekanism, Generators and Tools updated from 10.7.12 to 10.7.13.[19]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47: Mekanism, Generators and Tools updated from 10.7.13 to 10.7.14, the version still shipped in All the Mods 10 4.5.[2][18]
Tip: If you add Mekanism addons to your own copy of the pack, match them to the shipped Mekanism 10.7.14 jars for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version numbers. They don't say which features, fixes or balance changes came with each update, and the mod's own changelogs for these jars aren't available here. The specific gameplay changes between versions are therefore unverified.
