What is Mekanism?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism is the big tech mod in All the Mods 10: a full suite of low, mid and high tier machinery covering resource processing, energy generation, transmission systems and gadgets. It's built around gradual technological progression: whatever stage you're at, there's a tier of machine that fits, and the mod is designed to replace tedious mining and crafting with automated infrastructure.[1]

The headline feature is ore processing. Instead of smelting an ore into one ingot, Mekanism's purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization technologies let you double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot output per ore, as long as you build the infrastructure and feed it enough energy.[1]

Every Mekanism machine can also be upgraded into a factory, letting a single machine process 3 different items at once at basic tier, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate. That's how you collapse walls of furnaces into one block.[1]

The three mods in this guide

  • Mekanism is the core: machines, transmitters for items, fluids, gases, energy and heat, the Digital Miner with its filtering system, hydrogen-powered jetpacks, the Robit and sorting item networks built from Logistical Transporters.[1]
  • Mekanism Generators is the official addon that supplies power: Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator, Wind Generator, Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine. Without it you'd need another mod to run your Mekanism machines.[2]
  • Mekanism Tools adds tools, armor, shields and paxels for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel, plus paxels for the vanilla wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond tool types.[3]

All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools at version 10.7.19, and all three have been in the pack since 2.25 or earlier.[4]

Where it fits in progression

The pack gives Mekanism its own quest chapter plus a dedicated "Mekanism: Reactors" quest chapter, so there's a guided route from early machines all the way to reactors and the armor that goes with them. Along the way you'll pick up the Atomic Disassembler, Mekanism's paxel with switchable mining modes; the Modification Station for installing module units into tools and armor; and the QIO Drive Array, the heart of Quantum Item Orchestration, Mekanism's own virtual item storage.[5]

Mekanism is also on the ATM Star path. Chapter 3 asks you for "2 Antimatter Pellets" quest, which means running the deepest chain in the mod: Fissile Fuel through a Fission Reactor to make Nuclear Waste, activating that waste's neutrons for Polonium, pushing Polonium through the SPS to get Antimatter, then crystallizing the Antimatter into pellets.[6]

The Star chapter also wants the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit, which grants creative flight when installed in the MekaSuit chestplate, and needs some of the most expensive items in the game to craft.[6]

Tip: If wireless logistics is what you're after, a pair of Quantum Entangloporter blocks set to the same named network will move items, fluids, chemicals, heat and energy between them with no cables in between, just remember to set the side configs and turn on Auto-Eject.[7]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism is a tech mod about breaking materials down and getting the most out of every ore. In this pack the quest book starts the chapter "Mekanism" quest with an iron ingot, then walks you through osmium and your first machine. Here is the order I'd follow.[8]

Find osmium first

"Osmium" quest is the next quest after the chapter intro. Osmium ore spawns below Y level 56, and you'll need a lot of it because it is useful for many of the machines.[8]

Build the Metallurgic Infuser

The quest book calls the Metallurgic Infuser the first and most important machine. It combines an item with a chemical (an infuse type) to make new items and alloys.[8]

Make Infused Alloy and Basic Control Circuits

Two quests come after the infuser: "Infused Alloy" quest and the Basic Control Circuit quest a quest in "Mekanism". Both are made inside the Metallurgic Infuser using redstone as the chemical. Put a redstone item in the yellow chemical square: redstone dust gives 10mB, enriched redstone gives 80mB and a block of redstone gives 90mB. An infused alloy uses 10mB, and a basic control circuit uses 20mB.[8]

"Basic Tier" quest follows from these two. It covers the simplest tier of machines and blocks, which are built from redstone, basic control circuits and sometimes iron.[8]

Get power sorted

The quest "Power!" quest comes after the infused alloy. About 90% of Mekanism machines need energy, and the Energy Tablet is Mekanism's battery. You also need it to craft most generators. The Heat Generator quest comes after Power! in the quest book. The generator can run passively off lava or actively by burning fuel such as coal or wood.[8]

Steel casing, then machines

The "Machines" quest quest comes after the Steel quest, and its task is the Steel Casing. In this pack's recipes, machines such as the Enrichment Chamber and the Energized Smelter are built around it.[8][10]

Tip: The Energized Smelter runs on energy, so you can stop burning coal in furnaces. The quest book points out that you still need coal for steel.[8]

After that, the rest of the chapter covers upgrades, tiers, logistics and more machines. Many of those quests are in the quest book and aren't covered here, so follow it from there.[8]

How does Mekanism work?

7 parts

Mekanism is built around tiered machinery. You start with low-tier machines and work up through mid and high tiers. Along the way you'll use high-end generators, advanced transmission systems and multi-step processing chains. The core idea is simple: feed machines power, move resources between them with transmitters, and upgrade everything as your base grows.[1]

One important thing up front: Mekanism by itself doesn't generate power. The generators come from the Mekanism Generators addon. Without it you would need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[2]

Making and storing power

Mekanism Generators gives you a whole ladder of power options: the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator. The big multiblocks are the Fission Reactor, the Fusion Reactor and the Turbine.[2]

  • The Heat Generator is the classic starting point for making power.[11]
  • The Solar Generator gives you renewable energy, but only during the day.[11]
  • The Wind Generator only works well if there's actually wind where you place it.[11]
  • The Gas-Burning Generator burns Ethene for power.[11]

All the Mods 10 adds its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator, so check the recipe below rather than any older tutorial. It builds on the Bio-Generator.[10]

Pack-added recipe in All the Mods 10

To buffer your extra power, build an Energy Cube. It stores the excess your generators produce so your machines can draw from it when they need it.[12]

Transmitters: moving energy, fluids, chemicals, items and heat

Mekanism moves every resource type through its own dedicated transmitter. Here is what each one carries.[12][13]

  • Universal Cables carry energy.[12]
  • Mechanical Pipes carry fluids.[12]
  • Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals.[12]
  • Thermodynamic Conductors carry heat.[12]
  • Logistical Transporters carry items. The diversion variant gives you precise control over which sides items go to.[12][13]
Tip: You don't have to rip out your old transmitters when you tier up. Upgrade them right in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them.[12]
Tip: Big transmitter networks can cost you FPS. In this pack accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is off, so transmitters render their contents. Turn it on to render solid sides instead of the contents, which should help performance.[13]

Machines, tiers and factories

Mekanism machines can be upgraded into factories that work on several items at once in a single block. A basic factory processes 3 items, advanced processes 5, elite processes 7 and ultimate processes 9. That replaces whole walls of furnaces with one compact machine. You can craft a factory directly or upgrade an existing machine with a Tier Installer.[1][12]

Control circuits are the backbone of Mekanism's tier system. You'll see them in recipes across the whole mod, and each new circuit tier adds more pathways. Here are the higher tiers as they're crafted in this pack.[10][12]

Each machine has its own settings. The Configurator is your tool for changing them. Once you've set one machine up the way you like, use a Configuration Card to copy that configuration onto another machine. This saves a lot of time when you build rows of identical machines.[12]

Tip: In this pack accessibility.allowModeScroll is on. That means you can change the mode of a held Mekanism item by holding sneak and using the scroll wheel.[13]

Ore processing

Smelting ore straight into ingots wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's ore processing uses purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to get more out of each ore. With enough infrastructure and energy you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore.[1]

The first step up is the Enrichment Chamber, which increases your material efficiency. The top of the chain involves the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and the Washer.[12]

Storage

  • Fluid Tanks store your fluids.[12]
  • Chemical Tanks, starting with the Basic Chemical Tank, hold almost all of your chemicals.[12]
  • QIO Drives store your items, and higher drive tiers increase the storage bandwidth. You browse the stored items from a QIO Dashboard. In this pack it shows 8 slots wide and 4 slots tall by default, set by qio.slotsWide and qio.slotsTall.[12][13]

Pack-added recipe

Multiblocks and the Fission Reactor

When a Mekanism multiblock forms correctly, you'll see red sparkles around it. That's controlled by rendering.particle.multiblockFormation, which is on in this pack. If you turn it off, you get a message on the action bar instead.[13]

Multiblock contents are rendered out to 256 blocks in this pack, far more than the 64 vanilla uses for most blocks. Lowering rendering.berRange can improve performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in more.[13]

The Fission Reactor scales with how you build it. Here is how its size and layout affect it.[11]

  • Each fuel assembly you add increases both the reactor's fuel and waste capacity and its maximum burn rate.[11]
  • Every casing block adds heat capacity, so a bigger reactor takes more energy to raise its temperature.[11]
  • Cooled and heated coolant capacity both scale with the reactor's volume.[11]
  • Burning fission fuel produces heat for every whole mB burned.[11]
Watch out: Watch your reactor's damage level. Once it passes 100%, there's a chance of a catastrophic meltdown, and that chance rises the further damage climbs. If meltdowns are disabled in the config, the reactor forces itself off instead and stays off until its damage is back at safe levels. Letting waste build up past a set percentage of the waste tank also triggers excess waste.[11]

Unverified The sources don't show whether meltdowns are enabled in All the Mods 10 5.0, or which fission values the pack uses. Treat reactor safety as if meltdowns are possible.

Nuclear experiments can irradiate the area around you. A Geiger Counter shows how bad the environmental radiation is.[12]

Automated mining

The Digital Miner is Mekanism's automated mining machine. All the Mods 10 replaces its crafting with a pack-specific recipe, so use the one shown here.[10][12]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism progression in this pack is mostly a quest chain. The Mekanism chapter opens with an intro quest, then Osmium (Osmium Ingot), then the Metallurgic Infuser, which the quest calls the first and most important machine. Almost everything else hangs off those three steps.[8]

The four tiers

After the Metallurgic Infuser you get two quests: "Infused Alloy" quest and the Basic Control Circuit quest. Both lead into the tier quests, and each tier quest unlocks after the one before it.[8]

  1. Basic Tier ("Basic Tier" quest): the simplest, cheapest and weakest tier. Machines start at default and can be upgraded to Basic, while things like pipes and energy cubes start at Basic.[8]
  2. Advanced Tier ("Advanced Tier" quest): holds more items, moves more items and has more slots than Basic. Its materials are Infused Alloy and the Advanced Control Circuit.[8]
  3. Elite Tier ("Elite Tier" quest): the same buffs as Advanced, just more. It uses Reinforced Alloy and the Elite Control Circuit.[8]
  4. Ultimate Tier ("Ultimate Tier" quest): the best you can get from Mekanism in survival. It uses Atomic Alloy and the Ultimate Control Circuit. Atomic Alloy needs refined obsidian, and the Osmium Compressor quest covers how to get it.[8]

The control circuits are the backbone of every tier. These are the in-pack recipes for each one.[10]

Upgrading blocks and machines

Bins, Energy Cubes and Chemical Tanks upgrade by crafting from the previous tier's block. For example, the Advanced Energy Cube recipe starts from a Basic Energy Cube.[10]

If you don't want to pick machines up to upgrade them, the Tier Installers quest says you can use an installer on the machine instead. You can't skip tiers: a Basic machine can't jump to Ultimate with one installer. Tier Installers are Basic Tier Installer, Advanced Tier Installer, Elite Tier Installer and Ultimate Tier Installer.[8]

The quest book gives these capacities for each tier, from Basic to Ultimate:[8]

  • Energy Cubes hold 1.6mFE, 6.4mFE, 25.6mFE and 102.4mFE.[8]
  • Bins hold 64, 128, 512 and 4,096 stacks.[8]
  • Chemical Tanks hold 64, 256, 1,024 and 8,192 buckets.[8]

Machine quests follow the same ladder. "Better Machines" quest needs Advanced items, "Even better Machines!" quest needs Elite items, and "Some of the best Machines!" quest needs Ultimate items. The Purification Chamber and Osmium Compressor quests come after Better Machines, and the Combiner comes after Even better Machines.[8]

Ore processing tiers

The quest book also teaches ore processing in four steps, each giving more from the same ore:[8]

  1. Tier 1: enrich, then smelt. Ore blocks give twice the dust, and 3 raw ore give 4 dust.[8]
  2. Tier 2: a Purifier fed with oxygen from an Electrolytic Separator gives 3 clumps from an ore block or 2 from raw ore. Then crush, enrich and smelt.[8]
  3. Tier 3: chlorine from a Thermal Evaporation Plant and brine, then hydrogen chloride from the Chemical Infuser, injected with a Chemical Injection Chamber. Ore blocks give 4 shards and 3 raw ore give 8 shards. Purify, crush, enrich and smelt from there.[8]
  4. Tier 4: sulfuric acid, then the Chemical Dissolution Chamber, Chemical Washer and Chemical Crystallizer. 200mb of ore slurry makes 1 crystal.[8]

Power along the way

The Energy Tablet quest, Power!, comes after Infused Alloy, and the generator quests unlock after it. The figures below are the ones the quest book gives for this pack:[8]

Late game

The quest book continues in the Mekanism: Reactors chapter, which unlocks after quests such as Chemical Infuser, Chemical Oxidizer, Chemical Dissolution Chamber, Enrichment Chamber and Rotary Condensentrator. That chapter is told in the quest book, so check it in game. The ATM Star chapter says the Star's Mekanism needs are in the Reactors page.[8][14]

The Star chapter has a quest for 2 Antimatter Pellet. It describes a long chain that runs through Nuclear Waste, Polonium and the SPS. The pack changed the recipe that turns an Antimatter Block back into pellets:[10][14]

Another late-game quest covers the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit. Put in a MekaSuit Chestplate, it gives Creative Flight.[14]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

5 parts

Mekanism connects to the rest of the pack in a few clear ways. Its chemical processing handles the Allthemodium family of metals, its sawing recipes cover modded wood, and its top-tier machines feed into the pack's creative-style items and late-game crafts. The recipes below come from the pack's own recipe data.[10]

Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium processing

The pack changed how all three Allthemodium-family metals are processed, and it does so with Mekanism's chemical recipes. Each metal has the same three routes, so once you learn one you know them all.[10]

Sawing modded wood

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes for a long list of modded woods. Each one turns a log or stem into the matching planks and also gives you Sawdust. This covers Allthemodium woods like Ancient Planks, Demonic Planks and Soul Planks.[10]

It also covers planks from many other mods, for example Archwood Planks, Bloom Planks, Lunar Planks, Edelwood Planks, Dreadwood Planks, Menril Planks, Otherplanks and Maple Planks. Regions Unexplored and Eternal Starlight have the most entries.[10]

Creative items built from Mekanism parts

The pack adds crafting recipes for Mekanism's creative blocks, each built on an Ultimate-tier Mekanism block plus Allthemodium and ATM items. They are Creative Energy Cube, Creative Chemical Tank and Creative Fluid Tank.[10]

There is also an energizing recipe from Powah that involves the Creative Energy Cube, added by the pack.[10]

Mekanism parts in other late-game crafts

Several pack-added recipes for non-Mekanism items need a Mekanism component. The Improbable Probability Device uses an Antimatter Pellet alongside items from AE2, Iron's Spells, MEGA Cells, Modern Industrialization and PneumaticCraft. The Nexium Emitter uses the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit with parts from Advanced AE, Create, Immersive Engineering, Modern Industrialization and Powah. The Iron Jetpacks creative capacitor uses an SPS Casing and an Ultimate Induction Cell.[10]

In the quest book

The Mekanism chapter's "Osmium" quest quest asks for Osmium Ingot, an ingot that comes from the AllTheOres side of the pack. It comes right after the first Mekanism quest, and the Metallurgic Infuser quest follows it. Most of the chapter's other quests are not shown in the sources I have, so check the quest book itself for more.[8]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mekanism?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism is big enough in All the Mods 10 that it gets more than one home in the quest book: a base "Mekanism" chapter, a much deeper "Mekanism: Reactors" chapter, and a couple of required stops on the ATM Star path.[5][6][7]

The Mekanism chapter

This is the entry chapter, and it's where wireless power lives: "Quantum Entangloporters" quest covers the Quantum Entangloporter.[7]

Unverified The rest of the base chapter's quest order (machine tiers, generators, logistics) isn't confirmed here. Open the book in-game to see the full tree.

Mekanism: Reactors

The chapter opens with "Mekanism: Reactors" quest, which points you straight at sulfur processing: it asks for a Chemical Oxidizer, an Electrolytic Separator and a Chemical Infuser so you can turn sulfur into sulfur trioxide. Everything else in the chapter branches out from there.[5]

Tip: Build the Modification Station as soon as you can: every MekaSuit and Meka-Tool module quest in this chapter sits behind it, and the station is what actually installs the units.[5]
Watch out: The QIO drive quest is deeper than it looks: only the basic QIO Drive is craftable without a Fission Reactor, and the Supermassive QIO Drive needs antimatter.[5]

On the ATM Star path

Chapter 3 of the star path pulls two Mekanism goals in behind the Mekanism line. "2 Antimatter Pellets" quest asks for Antimatter Pellet: the end of the chain that runs fissile fuel through a Fission Reactor for waste, activates that into polonium, then pushes it through the SPS. a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" asks for the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit, which gives creative flight once it's in the MekaSuit chestplate.[6]

Which Mekanism config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism's settings live in the config/Mekanism folder, split across client.toml (visuals, sounds and GUI layout), common.toml (display units and a few shared toggles), general.toml (machines, multiblocks and world interaction) and gear.toml (every tool, armour and gadget value). Here are the ones you're most likely to touch in All the Mods 10, with the values this pack ships.[15][16][17][18]

Units and display

  • energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings show FE/RF instead of Joules. Switch it to JOULES if you'd rather read the numbers the config files use.[16]
  • temperatureUnit is KELVIN; the other choices are Celsius, Rankine, Fahrenheit and Ambient.[16]
  • holidays is false in this pack, so holiday greetings and easter eggs are off and default-skin Robits won't get randomised skins.[16]
  • enableDecayTimers is true, so radiation readings above safe levels show how long they'll take to decay.[16]

Performance and visuals

If Mekanism is costing you frames, client.toml is the first place to look. rendering.berRange is 256 blocks, which is how far multiblock contents and wind generators render; lowering it will likely increase performance at the cost of things popping in. accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is false, meaning cables, pipes, tubes, transporters and conductors render their contents. Set it to true if your transmitter networks are causing FPS issues.[15]

HUD and QIO

The MekaSuit HUD is enabled with hud.scale at 0.6, and hud.opacity sits well below fully opaque if you want to make it more solid. hud.jitter is 6, which controls how much the HUD sways when you move your head, and hud.reverse is off. The QIO Dashboard opens 8 slots wide by 4 tall, sorted by name ascending, with the search bar auto-focused.[15]

World interaction

  • allowChunkloading is true, so the Anchor Upgrade and Dimensional Stabilizer both work.[18]
  • aestheticWorldDamage is true: lasers can break blocks and the Flamethrower can start fires.[18]
  • cardboard_box.modBlacklist contains the waystones and hyperbox mod ids in this pack, so Cardboard Boxes can't pick up blocks from either mod.[18]
  • The Digital Miner reaches a maximum radius of 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades, with a 12x energy multiplier in silk touch mode. Dragging items from a recipe viewer into filter slots is enabled.[18]

Gear tweaks worth knowing

Watch out: The Digital Miner's radius config warns that raising it can hurt stability and memory usage, and strongly recommends leaving it at the default value.[18]

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 5.0 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Tools and Mekanism Generators at version 10.7.17. They have been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier.[19]

Pack updates

Each pack update below moved Mekanism, Mekanism Tools and Mekanism Generators to the same version. Newest first:[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]

  • Pack 4.15: 10.7.16 to 10.7.17.[20]
  • Pack 4.12: 10.7.15 to 10.7.16.[21]
  • Pack 4.6: 10.7.14 to 10.7.15.[22]
  • Pack 2.47: 10.7.13 to 10.7.14.[23]
  • Pack 2.42: 10.7.12 to 10.7.13.[24]
  • Pack 2.40: 10.7.10 to 10.7.12.[25]
  • Pack 2.38: 10.7.9 to 10.7.10.[26]
  • Pack 2.37: 10.7.8 to 10.7.9.[27]

What changed in the mod

These notes come from the mod's own changelogs. They describe the mod's changes, not pack-specific tweaks.[28][29][30][31]

  • 10.7.17: removed the use of Lazy so block highlight rendering copes with other mods that draw things other than lines in RenderHighlightEvent. It also added an incompatibility clause for a fission recipe hack mod.[28][32][33]
  • 10.7.16: fixed a bug where some multiblock machines needlessly rechecked their structure on redstone updates via onNeighborChange when Alternate Current is installed. It also fixed a missed equals override and brought in Chinese Simplified translation updates.[29][34][35]
  • 10.7.15: vents now insert into their tank instead of overwriting it, and vent fluid tanks are exposed to LookingAt plugins with the buffered amount actually saved. Superheated sodium is marked as gaseous, and sodium coolant now renders in the fission reactor.[30][36][37]
  • 10.7.15 also relevelled fission audio so it sits sensibly next to the other generators, set a minimum height on fluid multiblock renders, and shifted the HUD when sound subtitles are showing. It added a scanner for missing tags that logs a lot and shows a join message, and it bumped the minimum NeoForge version to 21.1.171. The notes for this release are truncated in the sources, so there may be more.[30][36][37]
  • 10.7.14: freerunners are supported in curios slots when a user or pack adds them to the tag, and the turbine base can now be non-square.[31][38]
  • 10.7.14 also lets machines do bonus operations when the upgrade multiplier gives less than 1 tick per operation before rounding, and fixes the missed bonus calculation for factory tiles.[31][38]
Watch out: The 10.7.14 changelog carried an alpha warning: Mekanism was described as not recommended for widespread modpack use, with likely game breaking bugs. Updating from one alpha to the next may make some Mekanism blocks disappear or void their contents, so back up your world before pack updates.[31][38][39]
