What is Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism is a full tech suite: low, mid and high tier machinery, energy generation, advanced transmission systems and gadgets. It is built around gradual progression, so there is a tier of machine for whatever stage you have reached, and it can carry you from your first powered furnace all the way to reactors and teleporters.[1]

The big draw is ore processing. Smelting an ore straight into an ingot wastes most of what you mined, so Mekanism gives you purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization machines that let you double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot output per ore, given enough infrastructure and energy.[1]

Every Mekanism machine can also be upgraded into a factory, which processes 3 items at once at basic, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate tier, so you never need a wall of furnaces again.[1]

The three modules in this pack

This pack ships all three at version 10.7.7.[4]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack gives Mekanism its own quest chapter, and the early route is short. You start with storage in a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", get power going with the Heat Generator in a quest in "?", and that leads straight into the Metallurgic Infuser in a quest in "?".[5]

Tip: The Metallurgic Infuser quest is the hub of the chapter. Almost everything else unlocks behind it, including the Enrichment Chamber, Basic Energy Cube, Basic Control Circuit, Basic Tier Installer and Infused Alloy, so build it early.[5]

From there the chapter branches into the machine and upgrade lines, the alloy chain up through Reinforced Alloy and Atomic Alloy, the tank and cable tiers, and the fancier toys like the Teleporter and Quantum Entangloporter.[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

4 parts

Mekanism is a full tech tree: low, mid and high tier machinery, energy generation, gadgets and ore processing that can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore once you build enough infrastructure and power.[1]

Two official addons ride along with it in this pack. Mekanism Generators adds the generators and reactors you need to actually power the machines, and without a power source from it or another mod your machines will sit idle. Mekanism Tools is optional gear: tools, shields and armor made from Mekanism materials like bronze, osmium, steel, refined glowstone and refined obsidian.[2][3]

Make power first

The quest chapter starts you on the Heat Generator, which is the simplest way to start making power in the mod. Get one running before you build anything that eats energy.[5][6]

The Metallurgic Infuser is the gate

The Metallurgic Infuser comes straight after the Heat Generator, and almost the entire rest of the chapter unlocks from it. Treat it as your real first milestone.[5]

Basic Control Circuits are made in the Metallurgic Infuser itself, not on a crafting table, so the machine pays for itself immediately.[7]

Infused Alloy is the other thing to stockpile. It unlocks the whole machine upgrade line in the chapter, and it leads to Reinforced Alloy and then Atomic Alloy for the higher circuit tiers.[5]

Tanks and a Configurator

The chapter also runs a storage line of its own: Basic Chemical Tank and Basic Fluid Tank, each upgrading through advanced, elite and ultimate tiers as you unlock better alloys.[5]

Where it goes next

From the Enrichment Chamber the chain runs to the Electrolytic Separator and then the Purification Chamber, which is the start of real ore multiplication. The Crusher follows the Purification Chamber, and after that Bio Fuel and Substrate open up the plastics and chemical side of the mod.[5]

Tip: Follow the quest chapter in order rather than jumping ahead. Every later branch, from the tier installers to the chemical machines, hangs off the Heat Generator and Metallurgic Infuser you build in the first ten minutes.[5]

How does Mekanism work?

7 parts

Mekanism is a full tech ecosystem: tiered machinery, energy generation, transmission networks and processing chains that you grow one stage at a time. Its headline system is ore processing, where enrichment, purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization let you push a single ore from two ingots all the way up to five, provided you build the infrastructure and feed it enough power.[1]

Machines also scale sideways. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory, and a factory processes 3 items at once at basic tier, 5 at advanced, 7 at elite and 9 at ultimate, all inside one block instead of a wall of furnaces. You can craft a factory directly or convert an existing machine with a Tier Installer.[1][8]

Power and energy units

Internally Mekanism runs on Joules, but in this pack the GUIs and network reader readings are set to display Forge Energy, so machine numbers line up with the rest of your base. Forge Energy integration is left enabled here, as are the higher-throughput integrations for Flux Networks and Grand Power, so cables from other mods can charge Mekanism blocks directly.[9][10]

The conversion rate in this pack is 2.5, meaning each FE you push in becomes 2.5 Joules of internal storage. Two other energy constants matter once you get further in: steam is worth at most 10 Joules per mB, which also affects the Thermoelectric Boiler, and hydrogen is set to 200 energy per mB, which feeds into Electrolytic Separator usage, the Ethene burn rate and Gas-Burning Generator energy capacity.[10]

Generation comes from the Generators module, which is what lets Mekanism power itself instead of relying on another mod. It covers the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar and Advanced Solar Generators, the Wind Generator, and the late-game Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

The pack adds its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator.

Transmitters: items, fluids, chemicals, heat and power

Each resource type gets its own transmitter. Universal Cables carry energy, Mechanical Pipes carry fluids, Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals and Thermodynamic Conductors move heat. Logistical transporters handle items, and diversion variants give you precise side control over what flows where.[8]

You do not have to rip networks out to upgrade them. Right-clicking a placed transmitter with the next tier of alloy upgrades it in world, so a basic network can grow into a higher-throughput one as your alloy supply improves.[8]

Machines can also push their own output. In this pack, auto-eject moves chemicals at 1,024 mB/t and fluids at 1,024 mB/t out of block entities. When a tank is set to dump excess, the keep ratio is 0.85 of the tank's capacity, and anything above that is voided.[10]

Configuring and copying machines

The Configurator is your main wrench: it changes the settings of blocks, including side configuration. Once you have one machine tuned the way you like, a Configuration Card copies that configuration onto another machine so you do not repeat the work. Middle-clicking blocks also copies their configuration data in this pack, since block data copying is enabled.[8][9]

  • The Dictionary tells you the generic tags of any block or item, which is what filters and recipes actually match against.[8]
  • A Gauge Dropper cleans out any gauge in a Mekanism GUI, handy when you put the wrong fluid or chemical in a machine.[8]
  • Cardboard Boxes let you pick up blocks and move them. No mods are blacklisted from boxing in this pack, and strict unboxing is off, so a block with a fluid that would vaporise on placement still unboxes and just leaves the remainder.[8][10]

Multiblocks

Mekanism multiblocks are built from casing and valve blocks and scale with the volume you enclose, so bigger structures simply hold more. The Dynamic Tank in this pack contributes 350,000 mB of fluid capacity or 16,000,000 mB of chemical capacity per block of volume, and total capacity is volume multiplied by that per-block figure.[8][10]

The Thermoelectric Boiler works the same way. Each block of its water portion adds 16,000 mB of water capacity, each block of the steam portion adds 160,000 mB, and the heated and cooled coolant portions add 256,000 mB per block each. Every heating element produces 16,000,000 heat, and the pack's water conductivity of 0.7 is the share of boiler heat that is immediately usable to convert water into steam.[10]

Fission Reactors follow the same scale-with-size logic, but with safety constraints. Fuel assemblies set both the fuel and waste capacity and the maximum burn rate, coolant capacity comes from the reactor's volume, casing blocks add heat capacity so a bigger shell is slower to heat up, and once reactor damage passes 100% there is a chance of a catastrophic meltdown that scales as damage keeps climbing. An excess waste threshold triggers when the output waste tank gets too full.[6]

Watch out: Temperatures in Mekanism GUIs are displayed in Kelvin in this pack, so read reactor and boiler heat numbers with that in mind.[9]

The Digital Miner

The Digital Miner is Mekanism's filtered quarry, and this pack keeps the recommended defaults. Its maximum radius is 32 blocks, it takes 80 ticks to mine a single block without upgrades, and silk touch mode multiplies energy use by 12. Dragging items from a recipe viewer straight into a miner filter's target slot is enabled, so you can filter for blocks you have never held.[10]

Tractor beam functionality pulls in the drops of blocks that are broken, so you are not chasing items across the dig site.[8]

Chunkloading and world interaction

Chunkloading is allowed in this pack, so both the Anchor Upgrade and the Dimensional Stabilizer work as intended and can keep your machines running while you are away. Aesthetic world damage is also on, which means lasers can break blocks and the flamethrower can start fires.[10]

Tip: When a Mekanism block stops being active, the client is only told 60 ticks later, which stops rapid on/off flicker from causing lag. Blocks always sync immediately when they turn on, so a machine that looks idle for a moment may just be catching up.[10]

Radiation

Mekanism's nuclear side produces radiation, and you have tools to watch it. A Geiger Counter shows how badly your experiments have irradiated the environment, and the Dosimeter tracks your own exposure. Decay timers are enabled in this pack, so readings above safe levels show you how long they will take to decay.[8][9][10]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism progression in this pack is built around Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate tiers. The Mekanism quest chapter follows them, and each tiered item (tanks, energy cubes, tier installers, cables, pipes, tubes, conductors and transporters) has its own chain of quests. The quests have no titles, so this guide describes each one by the item it asks for.[5]

The early hub

The Heat Generator quest (a quest in "?") leads to the Metallurgic Infuser quest (a quest in "?"). That second quest is the hub of the early game.[5]

Once you have the Metallurgic Infuser, a lot of quests open at the same time. They include the Basic Control Circuit, Basic Tier Installer, Enrichment Chamber, Basic Energy Cube, Osmium Compressor, Energy Tablet, Jetpack, Chargepad, Energized Smelter and Atomic Disassembler. The Bio-Generator, Solar Generator and Wind Generator also unlock here. So do the Teleporter (together with its frame) and the Quantum Entangloporter.[5]

The first main questline chapter touches Mekanism early too. It has quests for a Wind Generator, a Solar Generator, a Basic Universal Cable and a Basic Energy Cube. Some of those quests also accept Powah or Pipez items instead.[11]

Alloys and circuits

The alloys come in a short chain of quests. Infused Alloy comes straight after the Metallurgic Infuser, Reinforced Alloy follows it, and Atomic Alloy follows that. The Infused Alloy quest also opens the upgrade quests: Speed Upgrade, Energy Upgrade, Chemical Upgrade, Muffling Upgrade, Filter Upgrade and Stone Generator Upgrade.[5]

Control circuits follow the same ladder. The Advanced Control Circuit quest comes after the Basic Control Circuit quest and Infused Alloy. Elite needs Advanced plus Reinforced Alloy, and Ultimate needs Elite plus Atomic Alloy. Basic circuits are made in the Metallurgic Infuser, and each higher circuit has both a crafting recipe and a Metallurgic Infuser recipe, so you can pick either route.[5][7]

Processing and chemistry

The Enrichment Chamber opens the processing branch: Enriched Carbon, the Electrolytic Separator and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber. The Purification Chamber quest comes after the separator (and one more quest outside this chapter), then the Crusher, then Bio Fuel, Substrate, the HDPE Pellet and the HDPE Sheet.[5]

The Chemical Injection Chamber quest leads on to the thermal evaporation multiblock, which in turn leads to a heater (fuelwood or resistive) and the Chemical Infuser. The Chemical Dissolution Chamber quest leads to the Chemical Oxidizer, Chemical Crystallizer, Rotary Condensentrator and Chemical Washer. The Dissolution Chamber, Washer and Crystallizer recipes all call for an ultimate-tier circuit, so plan your circuit progression before them.[5][7]

Generators and reactors

The pack adds its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator, and it builds on the Bio-Generator, so unlock that first. Its quest (a quest in "?") shares an earlier prerequisite with the Purification Chamber quest.[5][7]

Added by the pack.

The reactors chapter covers the late game. The Lithium Dust quest and the Hazmat Mask gear quest both follow the same earlier quest. After the hazmat gear come the fission reactor parts. The uranium chain (yellow cake, oxidizer, dissolution chamber, infuser) leads to the Isotopic Centrifuge and the Radioactive Waste Barrel, and the turbine multiblock follows the waste barrel.[13]

The Polonium Pellet quest leads to the fusion reactor, and the SPS quest needs both the polonium and Plutonium Pellet quests. After fusion come the Laser Focus Matrix, then the Laser and Laser Amplifier. There are two Hohlraum quests: the first follows the Solar Neutron Activator and Electric Pump quests, and the second follows the laser quest and the first Hohlraum quest.[13]

The lithium dust quest also opens the induction matrix quests. These cover the induction casing, port and structural glass, plus any tier of induction cell and provider.[13]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

3 parts

Mekanism is the processing backbone for the Allthemodium metals in this pack. The pack also adds Mekanism sawing recipes for modded woods, and crafting recipes that use Mekanism items. Here is what the in-pack recipes confirm.[7]

Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium processing

Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium can each be run through Mekanism's chemical processing, and every one of them gets the same kinds of recipes. The inputs can be the ore, the raw ore or the raw ore block.[7]

The recipe dump marks these as mod recipes rather than pack-added ones.[7]

Sawing logs from other mods

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes that turn logs from other mods into planks and Sawdust. They cover Ars Nouveau archwood, EvilCraft undead logs and a long list of Regions Unexplored woods, including maple, redwood, palm, cypress, baobab and the bioshroom varieties.[7]

Each recipe gives you the planks for that wood plus sawdust, for example Archwood Planks, Undead Planks or Maple Planks. Many of the Regions Unexplored woods have separate entries for logs, wood blocks and stripped versions, and they all output the same planks.[7]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mekanism?

4 parts

Mekanism and its add-ons show up in four quest chapters: mainquestline_part_1, basic_logistics, mekanism and mekanism_reactors. Every quest here is untitled in the pack files, so I identify each one by its ID and what it asks you to hold. Each quest is also gated by earlier quests, which I list as 'after'.[5][11][12][13]

Main questline, part 1

The main questline only touches Mekanism lightly, and several quests accept an alternative from another mod. Some of their prerequisites sit in parts of the questline not covered here.[11]

Basic logistics

This chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks for the Configurator. Five quests then unlock from it, and each accepts any tier of its item: mechanical pipe (a quest in "?"), logistical transporter (a quest in "?"), thermodynamic conductor (a quest in "?"), universal cable (a quest in "?") and pressurized tube (a quest in "?").[12]

The Mekanism chapter

This is the big one. It starts with two tank lines. The chemical tank line runs a quest in "?" (basic), a quest in "?" (advanced), a quest in "?" (elite) and a quest in "?" (ultimate). The fluid tank line runs a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" in the same tier order.[5]

The machine line starts at a quest in "?", the Heat Generator. It leads to a quest in "?", the Metallurgic Infuser, which unlocks most of the chapter.[5]

The enrichment chamber opens the chemistry side: Enriched Carbon (a quest in "?"), the Electrolytic Separator (a quest in "?") and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber (a quest in "?"). From the separator you reach the Purification Chamber (a quest in "?"), then the Crusher (a quest in "?"), then Bio Fuel (a quest in "?"). A plastic line follows: Substrate (a quest in "?"), HDPE Pellet (a quest in "?"), HDPE Sheet (a quest in "?").[5]

Other quests continue from the Chemical Injection Chamber (a quest in "?") and the Chemical Dissolution Chamber (a quest in "?"). The injection chamber leads to the thermal evaporation multiblock, which needs the controller, block and valve (a quest in "?"). That in turn leads to a fuelwood or resistive heater (a quest in "?") and the Chemical Infuser (a quest in "?"). The dissolution chamber unlocks the Chemical Oxidizer plus sulfur (a quest in "?"), the Chemical Crystallizer (a quest in "?"), the Rotary Condensentrator (a quest in "?") and the Chemical Washer (a quest in "?"). The Gas-Burning Generator has its own quest (a quest in "?").[5]

Reactors chapter

The mekanism_reactors chapter splits into a few branches. Some of their prerequisites are quests that aren't in the sources I have.[13]

  1. Induction matrix: a quest in "?" asks for Lithium Dust. After it, a quest in "?" wants the induction casing, port and structural glass, and a quest in "?" wants any induction cell and any induction provider. a quest in "?" then asks for an Induction Port again.[13]
  2. Fission reactor: a quest in "?" asks for the full hazmat set. Then a quest in "?" wants the fission reactor casing and reactor glass. Three quests unlock from that one: the port (a quest in "?"), the fuel assembly plus control rod assembly (a quest in "?") and the logic adapter (a quest in "?"). The adapter leads to a quest in "?", which also asks for redstone, a piston and an observer.[13]
  3. Fuel and waste: a quest in "?" asks for a uranium ingot and Yellow Cake Uranium, which leads to a quest in "?" (oxidizer). a quest in "?" asks for fluorite and a dissolution chamber. Both feed a quest in "?" (chemical infuser), then a quest in "?" (Isotopic Centrifuge), then a quest in "?" (Radioactive Waste Barrel).[13]
  4. Turbine: a quest in "?" wants the turbine casing and structural glass. After it come a quest in "?" (rotor, rotational complex, pressure disperser, blade), a quest in "?" (valve, vent, saturating condenser) and a quest in "?" (Electromagnetic Coil).[13]
  5. Pellets, fusion and SPS: a quest in "?" asks for the polonium pellet and a quest in "?" for the plutonium pellet. The polonium pellet unlocks a quest in "?" (fusion reactor controller, frame, port and reactor glass). Both pellets unlock a quest in "?" (SPS casing, structural glass, SPS port), which leads to a quest in "?" (Supercharged Coil).[13]
  6. Fusion fuel: a quest in "?" asks for the Laser Focus Matrix, then a quest in "?" for the laser amplifier and laser. a quest in "?" (solar neutron activator) and a quest in "?" (electric pump plus filter upgrade) lead to a quest in "?", a Hohlraum. a quest in "?" asks for a Hohlraum again once the laser and first Hohlraum quests are done. a quest in "?" asks for the antimatter pellet.[13]

Which Mekanism config options matter?

5 parts

Mekanism has a lot of config options, so here are the ones you're most likely to bump into while playing. Everything below is exactly what this pack ships with. The pack's config files list current values but don't say which ones differ from the mod's defaults, so I'm not calling any of them pack changes.[9][10][14][15]

Display and power units

Machines and world interaction

Radiation and fission safety

radiation.enabled is true, so radiation is active worldwide. Fission reactors can melt down too: generators.fission_reactor.meltdownsEnabled is true, and the explosion radius from generators.fission_reactor.meltdownRadius is 8 blocks.[10][14]

Watch out: Meltdowns are enabled in this pack. The reactor's damage resets to 75 after one, per generators.fission_reactor.postMeltdownDamage. Watch your reactor's damage level.[14]

Generator output

Fluorite generation

Normal fluorite veins generate with world_generation.fluorite.normal.perChunk at 5 and world_generation.fluorite.normal.maxVeinSize at 5, up to Y 23. Buried fluorite veins are turned off, since world_generation.fluorite.buried.shouldGenerate is false. Retrogen is also off (world_generation.enableRegeneration), so already-generated chunks won't gain new Mekanism ore.[15]

Unverified The world.toml file has 93 more options that weren't available to me, so other ore settings aren't covered here. Which values differ from Mekanism's defaults is also unconfirmed.

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

4 parts

All the Mods 10 0.47 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools at version 10.7.7. Each of them was first included in 0.32 or earlier. I don't have pack changelog entries for this mod, so below are the notable changes from the mods' own changelogs, newest first.[4]

Watch out: Every one of these changelogs carries the same warning: the changelogs describe Mekanism as currently in alpha and not recommended for widespread use in modpacks. They say updating from one alpha to the next may make some Mekanism blocks disappear or void their contents, so make backups before you update. The entries below are worded as the changelogs list them.[16][17][18]

10.7.7 (the version in this pack)

  • The changelog lists an entry that aligns long split info to int, described as fixing a distribution bug.[16][17][18]
  • The changelog also lists an entry adding tests for Long distribution.[16][17][18]

10.7.5

The changelog for this release is the biggest of the set. The copy I have is truncated, so there may be more in it than I list here.[19][20][21]

  • The changelog says configs were restructured and gained support for NeoForge's config GUI, including translating their contents. It states that this resets all configs, because a parent level node was removed to make the GUI easier to navigate.[19][20][21]
  • The default dumpExcessKeepRatio value was lowered slightly, from 0.9 to 0.85. That is the mod's default, and I can't confirm from these sources whether the pack overrides it.[19][20][21]
  • According to the changelog, the Mekanism Additions voice key option was flipped to a push to talk option, with the same default behavior, and its description translation was fixed so it is used in game.[19][20][21]
  • The changelog says the baby biome and structure spawn blacklists moved to tags, such as mekanismadditions:blacklist_baby_creepers. It also says the wind generator's dimension blacklist moved to the dimension type tag c:no_wind, and that wind generator item rendering bugging out in a blacklisted dimension was fixed.[19][20][21]
  • The changelog lists an entry to check curios slots for radiation shielding.[19][20][21]
  • The changelog lists a fix for an inverted check for whether a block supports specific upgrades during recipe upgrading.[19][20][21]

10.7.4

  • The changelog lists a fix for failing to load QIO data if some items had become equivalent.[22][23][24]
  • It also lists a fix for items sometimes failing to load because they had multiple chemical side configs. They take the first one, usually gas.[22][23][24]

10.6.7

The Mekanism 10.6.7 changelog I have is empty apart from a truncation marker.[25]

The Mekanism Generators changelog for the same version lists the following entries, and its copy is truncated too.[26]

  • The changelog lists an entry adding bone block to the crusher recipes.[26][27]
  • It lists an entry adding back the AE2 compat recipes for silicon and ender dust.[26][27]
  • It lists an entry that stops snow forming on blocks used in multiblocks, described as preventing snow forming inside evaporation towers.[26]
  • It lists an entry that allows searching reactor to see all fission components.[26]
  • It lists a fix for the SPS billboarding effect not rendering.[26]
