What is Mekanism?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 3.2 guide

Mekanism is a big tech mod that brings a suite of low, mid and high tier machinery, high-end energy generators, advanced transmission systems and intricate processing mechanisms. Its headline feature is ore processing: with its purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization technologies, you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot production per ore, given enough infrastructure and energy.[1]

It's built around gradual technological progression, so there's a tier of machinery for whatever stage of gameplay you've reached. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or even 9 (ultimate) different items at once in a single machine. There are also fun extras like the hydrogen-powered Jetpack with multiple togglable flight modes, the Robit companion, the Digital Miner with its filtering, and sorting and filtering item networks built from Logistical Transporters.[1]

Mekanism Generators is the official addon that powers all of this. Without it you'd need another mod to make energy for your machines. It adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator, plus the big multiblocks: the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools, including Paxels (an axe, pickaxe and shovel in one), for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. It also adds Paxels for the vanilla Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond tiers.[3]

All the Mods 10 3.2 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools, all at version 10.7.14. They've been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[4]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Mekanism quest chapter. Early on it asks you for a Heat Generator and a Metallurgic Infuser. The infuser quest, a quest in "?", is the big hub. It opens up quests for the Enrichment Chamber, Osmium Compressor, Basic Energy Cube, Basic Control Circuit, Infused Alloy, the Solar, Wind and Bio-Generators, the Teleporter and the Quantum Entangloporter.[5]

From there the chapter climbs through the tiers. Tanks and energy cubes go from basic up to ultimate, alloys go from Infused Alloy to Reinforced Alloy to Atomic Alloy, and tier installers let you upgrade the machines you've already placed.[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

3 parts

Mekanism is all about machines for processing resources, and its ore processing lets you get more ingots out of every ore than smelting does. Those machines need power, and Mekanism Generators is the add-on that supplies it. Without it, you'd need another mod to power your Mekanism machines.[1][2]

Your first steps, in quest order

The pack's Mekanism quest chapter opens with two quests that share the same earlier prerequisite: the Heat Generator quest a quest in "?" and the Metallurgic Infuser quest a quest in "?". The infuser quest is the big hub. Most of the chapter's early machines, tools and generators unlock from it, so it's your real starting point.[6]

  1. Build a Heat Generator first. The mod describes it as the way to start making power, and it sits right at the top of the chapter.[6][7]
  2. Craft the Metallurgic Infuser. Almost everything else in the early chapter branches off this quest.[6]
  3. Use the infuser to make a Basic Control Circuit. In this pack, the basic circuit is a Metallurgic Infuser recipe, not a crafting table recipe. Its quest a quest in "?" also leads toward the Advanced Control Circuit.[6][8]

Made in the Metallurgic Infuser

  1. Make some Infused Alloy. Its quest a quest in "?" unlocks the machine upgrades, such as the Speed Upgrade and Energy Upgrade, as well as Reinforced Alloy.[6]
  2. Grab an Enrichment Chamber. It's also an infuser follow-up, and its quest a quest in "?" leads on to the Electrolytic Separator and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber.[6]
  3. Add a Basic Energy Cube to store your power. It's the first step of the energy cube line that continues with the Advanced Energy Cube.[6]
  4. Make an Energy Tablet, then a Configurator, which the quests put after the tablet. The Configurator is the tool for changing the settings of blocks.[6][9]

How does Mekanism work?

10 parts

Mekanism is all about swapping slow, basic setups for proper tech. You get low, mid and high tier machinery, high-end energy generators, advanced transmission systems and some seriously intricate processing chains. Here's how those pieces fit together.[1]

Ore processing: why it matters

Every time you smelt an ore straight into an ingot, you're wasting most of what you mined. Mekanism's ore processing uses purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to squeeze more out of each ore. With enough infrastructure and energy, you can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore.[1]

The Enrichment Chamber is the usual first step for better material efficiency. At the high end, the chain uses the Chemical Crystallizer together with the Dissolution Chamber and the Washer.[9]

Tiers, circuits and factories

Mekanism is built around gradual progression, with a tier of machinery for each stage of your game. Any Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes several items at once in a single block: 3 on basic, 5 on advanced, 7 on elite and 9 on ultimate. Say goodbye to walls of furnaces![1]

You can craft a factory directly, or upgrade a machine you've already placed with a Tier Installer.[9]

Control circuits go through the same four tiers, and the higher-tier machines ask for the matching circuit. At the very top sits Atomic Alloy, described as one of the strongest alloys in existence.[8][9][10]

Generating power

Mekanism machines run on energy, and Mekanism Generators is the official addon that produces it. Without that addon, you'd need a different mod to power your machines. Its lineup includes the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator. For big power it also has the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

The Gas-Burning Generator burns Ethene. This pack adds its own crafting recipe for it, so check the recipe below rather than relying on older guides.[7][8]

Energy Cubes are where you store excess power, going all the way up to the Ultimate Energy Cube.[8][9]

Tip: This pack adds a crafting recipe for the Creative Energy Cube, so it's something you can actually work toward here.[8]

Transmitters: moving energy, fluids, chemicals and heat

Mekanism moves stuff around with transmitters. Universal Cables carry energy, Mechanical Pipes carry fluids, Pressurized Tubes carry chemicals and Thermodynamic Conductors carry heat. Logistical Transporters belong to the same transmitter family.[9][10]

You don't need to rip out your cabling when you progress. You can upgrade transmitters right where they sit by using the next tier of alloy on them.[9]

Tip: If transmitters are tanking your FPS, turn on accessibility.opaqueTransmitters. It renders their sides instead of their contents. It's off by default in this pack.[10]

Configuring machines

The Configurator lets you change the settings of blocks. Once one machine is set up just right, a Configuration Card can copy that configuration onto another machine, which saves a ton of clicking when you build factory rows.[8][9]

Many Mekanism items have modes. In this pack, accessibility.allowModeScroll is on, so you can switch a held item's mode by sneaking and using the scroll wheel.[10]

When you're wiring up automation, the Dictionary helps you learn the generic tags of the blocks and items around you.[9]

Storage and QIO

Each resource type gets its own storage block. Fluid Tanks hold fluids, and the Basic Chemical Tank and its upgrades hold almost all your chemicals. Bins such as the Basic Bin store items.[8][9]

For large-scale item storage, Mekanism uses QIO. Items live on QIO Drives, and the advanced and elite drive tiers increase the storage bandwidth.[9]

In this pack, the QIO Dashboard shows 8 slots wide by 4 tall, sorted by name in ascending order, and the search bar focuses automatically when you open it. You can change these with qio.slotsWide, qio.slotsTall and qio.sortType.[10]

Automated crafting

Mekanism has a machine that does crafting for you. It also has the Crafting Formula item.[8][9]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: mekanism:crafting_formula

Multiblocks and the Fission Reactor

Several of Mekanism's biggest systems are multiblocks. The Boiler, for example, is built from Boiler Casing with Boiler Valve blocks.[8]

When a multiblock forms, red sparkles appear around it. If you turn off rendering.particle.multiblockFormation, you get a message on your action bar instead.[10]

This pack renders multiblock contents out to 256 blocks through rendering.berRange. Vanilla uses 64 for most blocks. Lowering it can help performance, but multiblock contents and wind generators will pop in closer to you.[10]

The Fission Reactor scales with how you build it:[7]

  • Each fuel assembly raises the maximum burn rate, so max burn rate equals your fuel assemblies times the burn rate per assembly.[7]
  • Each fuel assembly also adds to the reactor's fuel and waste capacity.[7]
  • Every block of reactor volume adds to both the cooled and heated coolant capacity.[7]
  • Each casing block adds heat capacity, which changes how much energy it takes to raise the reactor's temperature.[7]
  • Every whole mB of fission fuel creates energy in the form of heat.[7]
Watch out: Watch your reactor's damage. Once it passes 100%, a catastrophic meltdown can happen, and the chance rises the further damage climbs. If meltdowns are disabled in the server config, the reactor shuts itself off instead and won't turn back on until damage drops to safe levels.[7]

Radiation

Some of Mekanism's more advanced experiments irradiate the environment. A Geiger Counter shows you how bad the environmental radiation is, and the Dosimeter is craftable too. Scuba Gear refills your oxygen underwater and filters out contaminants.[8][9]

In this pack, radiation effects spawn up to 100 particles, scaled by radiation level, within 30 blocks of you. You can adjust this with rendering.particle.radiationParticleCount and rendering.particle.radiationParticleRadius.[10]

Tools and armor

Mekanism Tools is the official addon that turns Mekanism's materials into gear. You get armor, shields and tools for bronze, lapis lazuli, osmium, refined glowstone, refined obsidian and steel, including paxels, which combine an axe, pickaxe and shovel into one multitool. It also adds paxels for the vanilla tool materials: wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond.[3]

Steel gear is the usual entry point, and this pack adds its own crafting recipes for the steel tools. The Steel Paxel is built from the steel axe, pickaxe and shovel, and refined obsidian armor is the step up that beats netherite for protection.[8][11]

Watch out: Heads up: mobs can spawn wearing Mekanism Tools armor, and zombies can spawn holding its weapons. Those chances are modified by the chunk's difficulty modifier, so an early fight can go sideways against gear you have not crafted yet.[11]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

In this pack, Mekanism progression runs through its own quest chapter, and almost everything branches off one quest: building the Metallurgic Infuser in a quest in "?". Once that's done, the chapter opens up in every direction: circuits, alloys, tier installers, machines, generators and gear.[6]

Early game: the Metallurgic Infuser hub

Here's what the Metallurgic Infuser quest unlocks directly. Treat this as your early Mekanism shopping list.[6]

A few follow-ups chain off those. The Energy Tablet leads to the Configurator. Finishing both the Energy Tablet and the Chargepad unlocks the Robit, which then leads to the Digital Miner. The Osmium Compressor opens the Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot quests. The Solar Generator leads on to the Advanced Solar Generator.[6]

Tip: The pack's first main questline chapter lets you use Mekanism gear for its early power steps. It asks for a Wind Generator, and it accepts a Solar Generator, a Basic Universal Cable, a Basic Energy Cube or a Basic Fluid Tank as options. So your first Mekanism builds can count toward both chapters.[12]

The tier ladder: basic, advanced, elite, ultimate

Mekanism's tiers are gated by alloys. In the quests, Infused Alloy leads to Reinforced Alloy, which leads to Atomic Alloy. The Infused Alloy quest also unlocks the upgrade quests: Speed Upgrade, Energy Upgrade, Chemical Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Muffling Upgrade and Stone Generator Upgrade.[6]

Control circuits climb alongside the alloys. The Advanced Control Circuit quest needs both the basic circuit and Infused Alloy quests. The Elite Control Circuit quest needs the advanced circuit and Reinforced Alloy. The Ultimate Control Circuit quest needs the elite circuit and Atomic Alloy.[6]

Every circuit tier above basic has two recipes in this pack: a crafting table recipe and a Metallurgic Infuser recipe. The basic circuit itself is made in the Metallurgic Infuser.[8]

Tiered blocks follow their own quest chains, one tier at a time. This covers chemical tanks, fluid tanks, energy cubes, tier installers and every transmitter type: universal cables, mechanical pipes, pressurized tubes, logistical transporters and thermodynamic conductors. For example, the chemical tank chain goes Basic Chemical Tank, Advanced Chemical Tank, Elite Chemical Tank and then Ultimate Chemical Tank.[6]

Mid-game: chemicals and processing

Watch out: The Chemical Crystallizer, Chemical Dissolution Chamber and Chemical Washer recipes all call for an ultimate-tier circuit. Plan to finish the circuit ladder before you build the full chemical processing chain.[8]

Late game: reactors and multiblocks

The reactors chapter starts with the Chemical Crystallizer and builds up from there, step by step.[14]

  1. From the Chemical Crystallizer, you move on to Lithium Dust and a full Hazmat suit.[14]
  2. Lithium Dust unlocks the Induction Matrix quests: Induction Casing, Induction Port and Structural Glass, plus induction cells and providers of any tier.[14]
  3. The Hazmat suit leads to the fission reactor: Fission Reactor Casing and Reactor Glass, then ports, fuel and control rod assemblies, and the Fission Reactor Logic Adapter.[14]
  4. For the fuel chain, you work from Yellow Cake Uranium through the Chemical Oxidizer and Chemical Infuser to the Isotopic Centrifuge and the Radioactive Waste Barrel.[14]
  5. The industrial turbine comes next: Turbine Casing, then its rotor, blades, vents, valves, condenser and the Electromagnetic Coil.[14]
  6. Polonium Pellet unlocks the fusion reactor. The fusion reactor leads to the Laser Focus Matrix, lasers and the Hohlraum.[14]
  7. Polonium and Plutonium Pellet together unlock the SPS and its Supercharged Coil. There's also a quest for Antimatter Pellet.[14]

Antimatter doesn't stop at the reactors chapter. Another of the pack's quest chapters also asks for an Antimatter Pellet, and for the Module Gravitational Modulating Unit.[15]

Watch out: This pack uses its own recipe for the Gas-Burning Generator, so it isn't the default Mekanism recipe. Check the recipe below before you plan for it.[8]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

4 parts

Mekanism is woven into this pack in two ways. Other mods' materials run through Mekanism machines, and Mekanism parts show up in some of the biggest endgame crafts. Here's where the two sides meet.[8]

Processing Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium

The three Allthemodium metals come with their own Mekanism ore-processing recipes. Each metal has dissolution, injecting and purifying steps. Those steps give you dirty slurry, shards such as Allthemodium Shard, and clumps such as Allthemodium Clump. There are also steps that turn crystals like Vibranium Crystal into shards, and shards into clumps like Unobtainium Clump. So once your Mekanism ore line is running, these metals slot right into it.[8]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mekanism?

4 parts

Mekanism and its addons show up across a bunch of quest chapters in this pack. The big two are the dedicated Mekanism chapter and the reactors chapter, but you'll also see Mekanism items in the tools, armor, logistics and main questline chapters. Here's what each one asks for and how the quests unlock.[6][12][13][14][16][17]

Main questline

The first part of the main questline lets you use Mekanism gear to clear several early quests. Most of these accept an item from another mod instead, so Mekanism is optional here.[12]

The Mekanism chapter

The hub of this chapter is a quest in "?", the Metallurgic Infuser. It shares a prerequisite with a quest in "?", the Heat Generator. Once you finish the infuser quest, it opens up most of the chapter at once: circuits, tier installers, the Enrichment Chamber, energy cubes, Infused Alloy, the Osmium Compressor, the Jetpack, the Atomic Disassembler, the Bio, Solar and Wind generators, the teleporter and the Quantum Entangloporter.[6]

The reactors chapter

This chapter starts at a quest in "?" with a Chemical Crystallizer. From there it branches into lithium dust and a full hazmat suit.[14]

  1. Fission: the hazmat suit quest unlocks a quest in "?" (casing and reactor glass). That leads to the port, the fuel and control rod assemblies, and the logic adapter. A follow-up logic adapter quest also asks for redstone, a piston and an observer.[14]
  2. Induction matrix: lithium dust unlocks one quest for any tier of induction cell and provider, and another for the casing, port and structural glass. Both of these lead to a quest in "?".[14]
  3. Fuel processing and turbine: the yellow cake, oxidizer, fluorite and dissolution chamber quests feed into a quest in "?" (Chemical Infuser). That leads to the Isotopic Centrifuge, then the Radioactive Waste Barrel, then a quest in "?". That last quest opens the turbine rotor, valve and vent, and the electromagnetic coil quests.[14]
  4. Late game: a quest in "?" (Polonium Pellet) leads to the fusion reactor quest, then the laser focus matrix, then the laser and amplifier. Polonium and a quest in "?" (Plutonium Pellet) together unlock the SPS quest and then the Supercharged Coil. The chapter also has an Antimatter Pellet quest and two Hohlraum quests, the last of which needs the laser quest.[14]

Tools, armor, logistics and other chapters

  • Basic Tools: quests for Mekanism Tools swords and pickaxes in osmium, lapis lazuli, steel, bronze, refined glowstone and refined obsidian.[16]
  • Basic Armor: full armor sets for each of those materials, plus a full MekaSuit in a quest in "?".[17]
  • Basic Logistics: a quest in "?" asks for a Configurator, then unlocks five quests that each accept any tier of one Mekanism transport type.[13]
  • Chapter two, the star: one quest asks for an Antimatter Pellet and another for Module Gravitational Modulating Unit.[15]
  • Mekanism parts also count toward one glass quest in Building Tips and one pump-and-pipe quest in the XyCraft chapter.[18][19]

Which Mekanism config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mekanism's settings live in the config/Mekanism folder, split across client.toml (visuals, sounds and GUI layout), common.toml (display units and a few shared toggles), general.toml (machines, multiblocks and world interaction) and gear.toml (every tool, armour and gadget value). Here are the ones you're most likely to touch in All the Mods 10, with the values this pack ships.[20][21][22][23]

Units and display

  • energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings show FE/RF instead of Joules. Switch it to JOULES if you'd rather read the numbers the config files use.[21]
  • temperatureUnit is KELVIN; the other choices are Celsius, Rankine, Fahrenheit and Ambient.[21]
  • holidays is false in this pack, so holiday greetings and easter eggs are off and default-skin Robits won't get randomised skins.[21]
  • enableDecayTimers is true, so radiation readings above safe levels show how long they'll take to decay.[21]

Performance and visuals

If Mekanism is costing you frames, client.toml is the first place to look. rendering.berRange is 256 blocks, which is how far multiblock contents and wind generators render; lowering it will likely increase performance at the cost of things popping in. accessibility.opaqueTransmitters is false, meaning cables, pipes, tubes, transporters and conductors render their contents. Set it to true if your transmitter networks are causing FPS issues.[20]

HUD and QIO

The MekaSuit HUD is enabled with hud.scale at 0.6, and hud.opacity sits well below fully opaque if you want to make it more solid. hud.jitter is 6, which controls how much the HUD sways when you move your head, and hud.reverse is off. The QIO Dashboard opens 8 slots wide by 4 tall, sorted by name ascending, with the search bar auto-focused.[20]

World interaction

  • allowChunkloading is true, so the Anchor Upgrade and Dimensional Stabilizer both work.[23]
  • aestheticWorldDamage is true: lasers can break blocks and the Flamethrower can start fires.[23]
  • cardboard_box.modBlacklist contains the waystones and hyperbox mod ids in this pack, so Cardboard Boxes can't pick up blocks from either mod.[23]
  • The Digital Miner reaches a maximum radius of 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades, with a 12x energy multiplier in silk touch mode. Dragging items from a recipe viewer into filter slots is enabled.[23]

Gear tweaks worth knowing

Watch out: The Digital Miner's radius config warns that raising it can hurt stability and memory usage, and strongly recommends leaving it at the default value.[23]

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

Good news if you want stability: Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools all ship as version 10.7.7 in All the Mods 10 2.1. They all use the same build for Minecraft 1.21.1, so the three mods stay perfectly in step with each other.[24]
