What is Deeper and Darker?
2 parts
Deeper and Darker expands the Deep Dark biome, and its biggest feature is a whole new dimension called the Otherside. The Otherside has four biomes to explore: the Deeplands, the Echoing Forest, the Overcast Columns and the Blooming Caverns. You can also find an ancient temple that the project page calls the home of the warden. The mod adds over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, an elytra upgrade, the Sculk Transmitter, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.4.1 of the mod. The project page mentions a big update in development that will add more progression, biomes and mobs to the dimension. This guide covers the version that's actually in the pack.[1][2]
Who it's for
If you like exploring, this mod gives you a whole dimension to dig into. It's also great for builders, because the Otherside is full of new stone like Cobbled Sculk Stone and Cobbled Gloomslate, plus new wood from Echo Log and Blooming Stem. If you're after gear, Warden armor, tools and weapons are upgrades to your Netherite gear. You make them with a Smithing Template and a Reinforced Echo Shard.[1][3]
Where it fits in the pack
Everything starts with the Warden. When it dies, it can drop a Heart of the Deep, along with Warden Carapace and Echo Shards that you'll need for crafting later. Use the Heart on the Reinforced Deepslate portal frame in an Ancient City to open the way to the Otherside. The pack's Deeper and Darker quest chapter walks you through this, starting with "Heart of the Deep" quest.[3][4]
The Heart of the Deep is also part of the ATM Star path. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star asks for one, so save a Heart for it.[4]
The mod also shows up in the Basic Tools chapter, where the Resonarium Pickaxe is one of the accepted options for a Tier 4 quest.[5]
How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?
4 parts
Deeper and Darker builds on the Deep Dark and adds a whole new dimension called the Otherside. Almost everything in this mod starts with one big fight. You have to kill the Warden and use its heart to get in, so that's your first goal.[1][3]
Step 1: Take down the Warden
Your first target is Heart of the Deep, tracked by the quest "Heart of the Deep" quest. A dead Warden only has a chance to drop it, so you may need more than one attempt. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards. You'll use both for crafting later, so pick them all up.[3][4]
Step 2: Open the portal to the Otherside
- Head to the portal in an Ancient City. It's a frame made of Reinforced Deepslate.[3][4]
- Clear everything out of the inside of the frame. That includes Sculk, because any block in the way stops the portal from working.[3][4]
- Use the Heart of the Deep on the frame to activate your portal to the Otherside.[3][4]
Step 3: Your first hours in the Otherside
Sort out food first. Bloom Berries are the only food source in the Otherside. They grow on Glowing Vines on the roof of the Blooming Caverns, and you right-click them to pick them off the vine.[3]
Next, get some wood. Blooming Stem only spawns in the Blooming Caverns and doesn't grow like a normal tree. You can still strip it or turn it into light blue Bloom Planks, which gives you the usual wooden building blocks.[3]
For stone, Cobbled Sculk Stone shows up almost everywhere except the Overcast Columns. It works like normal stone, and you can smelt it into Sculk Stone to make more building blocks. One catch: you can't make stone tools out of it.[3]
Step 4: Upgrade to Warden gear
Your first big crafting goal is the Reinforced Echo Shard, tracked by "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest. It uses Warden Carapace, and the Warden usually drops more than one. If you need more Echo Shards, the easiest way to get them is looting chests in Ancient Cities.[3][6]

You'll also need a Smithing Template, which you find in chests in Ancient Cities. Once you have one, you can duplicate it at a crafting table. The pack has changed this duplication recipe, so check the recipe below rather than relying on the mod's default.[3][6]

Warden gear is a smithing upgrade of your Netherite gear. Each armor piece gets 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite version. The sword and axe each deal 1 heart more damage and have more durability. In the pack's tool quests, the Warden Pickaxe is listed at Tier: 5 and the Warden Sword at 9 Attack Damage.[3][5][6]
Every Warden tool and armor piece follows the same smithing pattern
How does Deeper and Darker work?
5 parts
Heads up before you dive in: Deeper and Darker isn't a tech mod. It's an adventure and exploration mod built around the Deep Dark and a whole new dimension called the Otherside. Its core systems are getting into that dimension, upgrading your gear through smithing, sonic-blast enchantments, and some sculk-flavoured utility items.[1][7]
Unverified The available sources don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item transport, or automation in Deeper and Darker. Don't plan a factory around this mod unless you've confirmed that kind of content in-game.
Getting into the Otherside
Everything starts with the Warden. To enter the Otherside, you kill the Warden and use its heart. The mod even has an advancement for exactly this: slay the Warden and take its heart.[1][7]
The Otherside sits deep below the bedrock. Once you're there, there are four biomes to explore: the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns. An advancement tracks whether you've explored all of them.[1][7]
Keep an eye out for the ancient temple, the Warden's home. There's also an advancement for finding an Ancient City. The mod adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, and there's an advancement for killing one of every Sculk monster.[1][7]
Gear upgrades through smithing
Deeper and Darker uses two smithing template upgrades, both working the same way as vanilla's netherite upgrade: gear in one slot, an upgrade material in the other.[7]
- Resonarium upgrade: put iron armor, a weapon or a tool in the base slot, and a Resonarium Plate in the additions slot.[7]
- Warden upgrade: put netherite armor, a weapon or a tool in the base slot, and a Reinforced Echo Shard in the additions slot. Reinforcing an Echo Shard earns its own advancement.[7]
The Warden upgrade gets you the mod's Warden set of armor and tools, and there's an advancement for wearing a full set of Warden Armor. That makes it the endgame gear path of the mod.[1][7]
Enchantments and sonic blasts
Some of the mod's gear fires sonic blasts, and the Sonorous Staff has its own advancement for obtaining it. Two new enchantments power those blasts up, and two more focus on sculk.[7]
- Reverberation increases the range of sonic blasts.[7]
- Volume increases the damage of sonic blasts.[7]
- Sculk Smite increases damage against sculk mobs, such as the Shattered and the Warden.[7]
- Catalysis spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[7]
Unverified The sources don't say which items can hold these enchantments, their maximum levels, or exactly how much each level adds.
Sculk utility items
The Sculk Transmitter is one of the mod's headline items, and getting one earns an advancement. Its tooltip shows a stored location as a set of coordinates, so it remembers a specific spot in the world.[1][7]
Unverified The sources don't explain how you set the Sculk Transmitter's location or what it does with it.
Crystallized Amber can contain a Sculk Leech, which shows up in the amber's tooltip.[7]
If you want to track down Warden territory, the Ancient Compass is crafted from a regular compass and a Warden Carapace. In All the Mods 10 8.1 it uses the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[6]

Building blocks
The rest of the mod is a big building palette: over a hundred new blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type. The pack's recipe dump shows these using the mod's own crafting recipes. For example, you craft Bloom Planks from any bloom stem, and you turn Smooth Gloomslate into Cut Gloomslate.[1][6]
How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?
4 parts
In this pack, Deeper and Darker progression runs through one big gate: the Warden. You beat it for a Heart of the Deep, open a portal to the Otherside, and then work up from Netherite to Warden gear. The rest of the quest chapter covers exploring the Otherside and crafting goodies from its mobs.[3]
Step 1: Kill the Warden
Everything starts with "Heart of the Deep" quest. When the Warden dies, it has a chance to drop a Heart of the Deep. It also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, and you'll need both for crafting later. Use the Heart on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside.[3][4]
The Heart of the Deep also matters outside this mod. The pack's ATM Star chapter asks for one in "Heart of the Deep" quest, because it's used for the ATM Star.[4]
The Resonarium tier
Resonarium gear sits below Warden gear. The pack's Basic Tools chapter accepts the Resonarium Pickaxe as one option for its Tier 4 pickaxe quest, a quest in "Basic Tools". It also accepts the Resonarium Sword for its 7 Attack Damage sword quest, a quest in "Basic Tools".[5]
Both Resonarium items are smithing upgrades that use a Resonarium Smithing Template and a Resonarium Plate.[6]
Unverified The provided sources don't say where to get the Resonarium Plate or the Resonarium Smithing Template in this pack.
The Warden tier
Warden gear is the top of this mod's gear ladder, and it needs two things from the Otherside. First is the Smithing Template, covered by "Warden Upgrade Template" quest. You find it in chests in Ancient Cities.[3]
Once you have one template, you can duplicate it by crafting, so you don't need to find one for every piece. The pack has changed this duplication recipe, so check the recipe below for the in-pack version.[3][6]

Second is the Reinforced Echo Shard from "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest. The quest tells you where to farm the materials: Phantoms, which spawn after you skip sleep for a few days; Ancient City loot; and the Warden, which usually drops more than one Warden Carapace.[3]

Recipe id: deeperdarker:reinforced_echo_shard
With a template and a shard, you upgrade your Netherite gear piece by piece at a smithing table. Each Warden quest unlocks once you've done both the template and shard quests.[3][6]
- Weapons ("Warden Weapons" quest): the Warden Sword and Warden Axe each deal 1 Heart more damage than their Netherite versions and have more durability. The axe still chops trees efficiently.[3]
- Tools ("Warden Tools" quest): the pickaxe, shovel and hoe keep the same tier and speed as Netherite. The only real change is higher attack damage, which makes the Warden Hoe hit harder than any vanilla hoe.[3]
- Armor ("Warden Armor" quest): each piece has 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite counterpart, but it loses Knockback Resistance.[3]
The pack's general gear chapters count this tier too. The Warden Pickaxe counts for the Tier 5 pickaxe quest a quest in "Basic Tools", and the Warden Sword is the item for the 9 Attack Damage quest a quest in "Basic Tools".[5]
The Basic Armor chapter also pitches Warden Armor in "Warden Armor" quest as an alternative upgrade path for your Netherite, instead of going to Allthemodium.[8]
The helmet, leggings and boots use matching smithing recipes
Endgame extras from Otherside mobs
Two more quests unlock after you've dealt with the Stalker, the Shattered and the Sculk Snapper. Their crafting materials come from Otherside mobs: Sculk Bone from the Shattered, Soul Dust from Sculk Snappers or Sculk Leeches, and Soul Crystal from the Stalker.[3]
The Soul Elytra from "Soul Elytra" quest flies like a normal Elytra but has more durability and armor points. You can't repair it with Phantom Membranes, but enchantments can still repair it.[3]

How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?
3 parts
Deeper and Darker is mostly its own adventure in the Otherside, but All the Mods 10 ties it into the rest of the pack in a few spots. Most of these connections were added or changed by the pack itself. They fall into three groups: a big endgame crafting recipe, sawmill processing for the two new wood types, and a whole range of furniture.[6]
Heart of the Deep and the Wither's Compass
The pack adds a shaped recipe for the Wither's Compass that needs a Heart of the Deep. It also pulls in items from several other mods, such as the 64x Netherstar Generator, the Wither Builder, the Nether Star Crux and Witherproof Bricks. That makes it a real cross-mod project, so check the full recipe below before you start gathering.[6]

Sawing Bloom and Echo wood
The pack adds sawmill recipes for both Otherside wood types. You can run a Blooming Stem through a Mekanism sawing recipe to get Bloom Planks plus Sawdust as a byproduct.[6]

BiblioCraft furniture in Otherside wood
If you like decorating, both woods get their own BiblioCraft furniture. Bloom Slab and Echo Slab are used to craft display cases, seats and several seat back styles: small, raised, flat, tall and fancy. Each comes in wool colors including black, blue, brown, cyan and gray.[6]
- Display cases, such as the Cyan Bloom Display Case, combine the wood's slab with colored wool and glass.[6]
- Seats, like the Cyan Echo Seat, and the small, raised and flat seat backs use the slab and colored wool, and most of them also need wooden rods.[6]
- Tall and fancy seat backs are upgrades: you make them from a flat seat back of the same color and wood plus another slab.[6]
These furniture recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so trust the in-game recipe view over any default recipe you might remember. It's a nice way to show off the wood colors too: Bloom planks are light blue, and Echo wood items are a light, almost mint green.[3][6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Deeper and Darker?
4 parts
Deeper and Darker gets its own full quest chapter, plus a few appearances in the Basic Tools, Basic Armor and ATM Star chapters. The main chapter follows a clear path: beat the Warden, get into the Otherside, gear up with Warden equipment, and then collect everything the new biomes have to offer.[3][4][5][8]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: Warden progression
- "Heart of the Deep" quest unlocks after the Kill the Warden quest. It asks for a Heart of the Deep, which you use on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside. The frame has to be completely clear of blocks or the portal won't light. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which you'll need for crafting later.[3]
- "Warden Upgrade Template" quest unlocks after The Otherside and Visit an Ancient City quests. It asks for a Smithing Template. You find these in chests in Ancient Cities, and you can craft copies of them.[3]
- "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest unlocks after The Otherside and Kill the Warden. It asks for a crafted Reinforced Echo Shard. The quest points you to Phantoms, Ancient City loot and the Warden's Carapace drops for the materials.[3]
- Once you have both the template and the shard, three quests open up. "Warden Weapons" quest asks for a Warden Sword or a Warden Axe. "Warden Tools" quest asks for a Warden Pickaxe, Warden Shovel or Warden Hoe. "Warden Armor" quest asks for all four armor pieces: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots.[3]
Warden gear is a Netherite upgrade that uses the template and a Reinforced Echo Shard. The sword and axe each deal 1 Heart of Damage more than Netherite and have more durability. The tools mine at the same tier and speed as Netherite but hit harder. Each armor piece gives 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than Netherite, but it loses the Knockback Resistance.[3]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: exploring the Otherside
The rest of the chapter is a collection checklist. Each quest unlocks after the quest for the biome where you find the item.[3]
- Deeplands: "Sculk Tendrils" quest asks for Sculk Tendrils, which spawn rarely. "Sculk Grime" quest asks for a Grime Ball, which comes from mining Sculk Grime, the mod's version of Clay.[3]
- Echoing Forest: "Echo Trees" quest asks for an Echo Log. "Echo Soil" quest asks for Echo Soil. a quest in "Deeper and Darker" asks for Sculk Gleam, a light source that breaks fastest with a Hoe.[3]
- Blooming Caverns: "Blooming Wood" quest asks for a Blooming Stem. "Glowing Roots" quest asks for Glowing Roots. "Bloom Berries" quest asks for Bloom Berries, which you pick with Right Click and which are the only food source in the Otherside. "Ice Lilies" quest asks for an Ice Lily, which needs Shears. "Blooming Moss" quest asks for a Blooming Moss Block.[3]
- Blooming Caverns or Deeplands: "Sculk Vines" quest asks for Sculk Vines.[3]
- Deeplands, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns: "Sculk Stone" quest asks for Cobbled Sculk Stone.[3]
- Overcast Columns: "Gloomslate" quest asks for Cobbled Gloomslate. "Gloomy Cacti" quest asks for a Gloomy Cactus. "Crystallized Amber" quest asks for Crystallized Amber, which needs Silk Touch.[3]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: loot and mob drops
- "Sculk Transmitter" quest unlocks after the Ancient Temples quest and asks for a very rare Sculk Transmitter from Ancient Temple chests. To use it, Shift Right Click a block with a GUI to bind it, and you can then open that block remotely.[3]
- "Soundproof Glass" quest unlocks after the Sculk Snapper quest and asks for Soundproof Glass. It blocks sound from Sculk Sensors and Shriekers the same way Wool does.[3]
- "Soul Elytra" quest and "Sonorous Staff" quest both unlock after the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper quests. They ask for a Soul Elytra and a Sonorous Staff, which are crafted from those mobs' drops.[3]
Other chapters
- Basic Tools: a Tier 4 pickaxe quest accepts a Resonarium Pickaxe, a Tier 5 quest accepts a Warden Pickaxe, a 7 Attack Damage quest accepts a Resonarium Sword, and a 9 Attack Damage quest asks for a Warden Sword. These are a quest in "Basic Tools", a quest in "Basic Tools", a quest in "Basic Tools" and a quest in "Basic Tools". Each of them has other mods' items as alternatives.[5]
- Basic Armor: "Warden Armor" quest asks for the full Warden Armor set, pitched as a Netherite upgrade that needs a few Warden drops.[8]
- Chapter 3: The ATM Star: "Heart of the Deep" quest unlocks after the Deeper and Darker quest and asks for a Heart of the Deep, which is used for the ATM Star. Hang on to one![4]
Which Deeper and Darker config options matter?
Deeper and Darker's project page is all about content, not settings. The mod adds a new dimension called the Otherside, which you enter by killing the warden and using its heart. It also brings new biomes, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]
Unverified We couldn't confirm which config options Deeper and Darker offers in All the Mods 10 8.1, or how this pack sets them. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so this section can't say which values the pack changed from the mod defaults. If you want to tweak anything, check the mod's config file in your own instance.
