What is Deeper and Darker?

2 parts

Deeper and Darker is a mod built around one idea: the Deep Dark should be more than an empty ruin you sneak through for a couple of ancient city chests. It adds blocks, items, armor and mobs themed around sculk, plus a whole new dimension called the Otherside.[1]

This pack ships version 1.3.2 of the mod, and it has been part of the pack since at least the 0.47 release, so any world you have been playing for a while already has its content generated.[2]

What you get

  • Four Otherside biomes to explore: the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns.[1]
  • An ancient temple structure, described as the home of the warden. Breaking the ancient vases inside can wake an ancient lurker, so treat them carefully.[1]
  • Over a hundred new building blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]
  • New gear: a warden set of armor and tools, an upgrade to the elytra, and the sculk transmitter.[1]
  • Eight new mobs, one of which is a miniboss.[1]

Where it fits in your run

The Otherside is gated behind a real fight rather than a tech tier. To get in, you need to kill the warden and use its heart, which makes this mod a mid-to-late game detour for players who are already comfortable in the Deep Dark and have the gear to survive it.[1]

Tip: If you mostly want the mod for building, the gloomslate, sculk stone and new wood type give you a big palette of dark, sculk-themed blocks to work with once you have Otherside access.[1]

How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?

5 parts

Deeper and Darker is all about the Deep Dark. It adds new blocks, items, armor and mobs around that biome, plus a whole new dimension called the Otherside. So your "getting started" path here isn't a machine or an ore, it's a trip down to the Deep Dark and an Ancient City.[1]

Step one: get to the Deep Dark

Everything in this mod starts deep below the bedrock, where the darkness awaits. Your first real milestone is finding an Ancient City, which is also what unlocks the mod's early advancements.[3]

While you're down there you'll want Echo Shards, since they're the base of the mod's first crafted item. You'll also be collecting the mod's building stone on the way, sculk stone and gloomslate both show up as full block families you can process later.[1][4]

Step two: the Reinforced Echo Shard

The Reinforced Echo Shard is the first item worth going out of your way for. To make it you need to slay the Warden and take its heart, so this is a genuine boss fight, not a side trip. The shard itself is what you'll feed into the Warden upgrade smithing template later.[3][4]

Craft this once you've beaten the Warden.

That smithing template takes netherite armor, a weapon or a tool as the base, and Reinforced Echo Shards as the addition. Full Warden Armor is a later goal, but knowing where the shards go tells you how many to stock up on.[3]

Watch out: The Warden's heart is also your key to the Otherside dimension, you kill the Warden and use its heart to get in. Don't burn your only one on gear before you've had a look at the new dimension.[1]

Step three: into the Otherside

The Otherside is where the bulk of the mod lives. There are four biomes to explore: the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns. There's also an ancient temple to find, the home of the Warden.[1]

Watch out: Be careful breaking the ancient vases in the temple, you can wake up an ancient lurker.[1]

The Otherside is also where the mod's two wood types come from. Echo logs and blooming stems both turn into planks, and from there you get the usual full set of stairs, slabs, doors, fences, signs and boats.[4]

Bloom Planks work the same way from blooming stems.

Step four: stone processing

Sculk stone and gloomslate follow the vanilla deepslate pattern, so once you've got a stack of the cobbled version you can walk it all the way up to bricks and tiles. Start with the polished step.[4]

Cobbled Sculk Stone polishes the same way, and both families branch into slabs, stairs, walls and chiseled variants from there. Check the recipe viewer for the full tree: there are over a hundred new blocks in the mod, so there's plenty to build with.[1][4]

Where to go next

After the Reinforced Echo Shard, the mod's advancement list is a decent roadmap: kill one of every sculk monster, explore all the Otherside biomes, pick up a Sculk Transmitter and a Sonorous Staff, and finish a full set of Warden Armor.[3]

Two enchantments are worth watching for as well. Sculk Smite increases damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden, and Catalysis spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[3]

Unverified Exact spawn rules, dimension travel mechanics and the recipes for the Sculk Transmitter, Sonorous Staff and Warden gear aren't covered by the sources used for this page. Check the in-game recipe viewer for the in-pack versions. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Deeper and Darker work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 6.6 guide

Heads up: the sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, so I won't make any up. What they do cover is how you get into the Otherside, how the warden gear is upgraded, and how the building blocks are crafted. The project page also says a new update branch is planned to add progression to the dimension and more biomes and entities, so what follows is the mod as the page and the lang file currently describe it.[1][5]

Getting into the Otherside

As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds a whole new dimension called the Otherside, with biomes like the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns. To enter it, you kill the warden and use its heart. The in-game advancements back this up: one tells you to slay the Warden and take its heart, and another points you to the depths below the bedrock.[1][5]

The project page also says there is an ancient temple that is the warden's home. It warns you to be careful when breaking the ancient vases there, so you don't awaken an ancient lurker.[1]

Warden gear and the upgrade template

The project page currently lists a warden set of armor and tools for the mod. The upgrade uses a smithing template: the base slot takes netherite armor, a weapon or a tool, and the additions slot takes a Reinforced Echo Shard. There is an advancement for reinforcing an Echo Shard, and another for wearing a full set of Warden Armor.[1][5]

Sculk-themed extras

  • Catalysis is an enchantment that spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[5]
  • Sculk Smite is an enchantment that increases damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden.[5]
  • The Sculk Transmitter has a tooltip that shows the coordinates it is located at. There is also an advancement for acquiring one.[5]
  • Crystallized Amber can have a tooltip saying it contains a Sculk Leech.[5]
  • As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, and an upgrade to the elytra.[1]

Crafting the building blocks

The project page currently says the mod adds over a hundred blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]

The recipes shown for these blocks are plain crafting recipes listed as the mod's own, and the sources show no pack changes to them. Only part of the full recipe list is visible to me.[6]

Bloom wood gives you the usual set of building pieces, such as Bloom Door, Bloom Fence and Bloom Boat. The planks are the starting point.[6]

  • any bloom stem

Bloom Planks accept any item from the bloom stems tag.

Boats with chests have their own recipe, so you can make one by combining a boat with a chest. Echo wood has boat and chest boat recipes as well.[6]

The stone types, gloomslate and sculk stone, come in cobbled, smooth, cut and chiseled forms, such as Cobbled Gloomslate, Cobbled Sculk Stone, Cut Gloomslate and Cut Sculk Stone. Slabs, stairs and walls exist for the cobbled and cut versions.[6]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide

Deeper and Darker in this pack is a gear-and-blocks mod rather than a machine mod, so its progression is short and sharp: you go from Resonarium tools to Warden tools, with the Warden set sitting on top of netherite. Both tiers show up in the pack's quest book, in the basic tools chapter.[7][8]

Where the tiers sit in the quests

So if you are running this mod as your weapon line, Resonarium clears the early tool quests and Warden gear clears the later, tighter ones. The Warden sword quest is the only one in that chapter with a single accepted item, which makes it a nice checkpoint to aim at.[7]

Resonarium

Resonarium is the base material for this tier. Combining it with a scute gives you a Resonarium Plate, which is the refined form you will want to stockpile before moving on.[8]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: deeperdarker:resonarium_plate

Warden gear

The Warden tier is a smithing upgrade, not a crafting recipe. First you turn Warden Carapace into a Reinforced Echo Shard together with an echo shard and phantom membrane.[8]

With the shard and the mod's Smithing Template in hand, you upgrade a netherite pickaxe or netherite sword at a smithing table to get the Warden versions.[8]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: deeperdarker:warden_pickaxe_smithing

Warden SwordMod recipe

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: deeperdarker:warden_sword_smithing

Watch out: Both Warden upgrades consume a finished netherite tool as the base, so do not burn your last netherite on something else if you are chasing the Warden sword quest.[8]

The block lines are separate

Everything else the mod adds is decorative and sits outside the tool progression. Sculk Stone and Gloomslate both follow the vanilla stone pattern: cobbled to polished, polished to bricks, bricks to tiles and chiseled variants, with slabs, stairs and walls at every step. Grime Balls press into Sculk Grime and Grime Bricks into Sculk Grime Bricks, and there are full wood sets for both Echo and Bloom, including planks, doors, signs and boats.[8]

Tip: None of the block chains gate the tool tiers, so you can safely ignore them on a progression run and come back for the building blocks later.[8]

How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?

3 parts

Deeper and Darker doesn't have quests in this pack, so its connections to other mods show up in recipes. They fall into two groups: wood processing for the Echo and Bloom wood types, and one endgame crafting recipe that uses Heart of the Deep.[4]

Sawmills and wood processing

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes that turn any Echo log type into Echo Planks and any Bloom stem type into Bloom Planks. Each recipe also gives you Sawdust as a byproduct.[4]

Mekanism also has its own sawing recipes for Echo wood. One turns Echo logs into planks plus sawdust, and another does the same for the Echo Hanging Sign. These are plain mod recipes, not pack additions.[4]

Farmer's Delight cutting

Farmer's Delight's cutting recipes work on Echo wood, and each one gives you Tree Bark on top of the stripped block. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes. They cover Echo Log and Echo Wood.[4]

Heart of the Deep is required in the pack's recipe for the Wither's Compass. The recipe is added by the pack, and the other ingredients come from several different mods, so it's an endgame-style crafting target. Check the recipe below for the full layout.[4]

Which Deeper and Darker config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Deeper and Darker's project page is all about content, not settings. The mod adds a new dimension called the Otherside, which you enter by killing the warden and using its heart. It also brings new biomes, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]

Unverified We couldn't confirm which config options Deeper and Darker offers in All the Mods 10 8.1, or how this pack sets them. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so this section can't say which values the pack changed from the mod defaults. If you want to tweak anything, check the mod's config file in your own instance.

What changed in Deeper and Darker between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 0.60 ships Deeper and Darker 1.3.2, using the file deeperdarker-neoforge-1.21-1.3.2.jar. The mod was first included in All the Mods 10 0.47 or earlier, so it has been in the pack for a while.[2]

1.3.2

This is the version you get in 0.60. Its changelog describes it as a fix for a critical server crash that happened when using other mods' armor. If you run a server with a pack this big, that is a fix you want.[2][9]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Deeper and Darker were available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod between releases are unverified. The full 1.3.2 change list is on the mod's release page, and only the crash fix is confirmed here.
