What is Deeper and Darker?

2 parts

Deeper and Darker is a mod built around one of the emptiest parts of vanilla Minecraft: the Deep Dark. It adds more blocks, items, armors and hidden mysteries to complement that biome, and it hangs a whole new dimension off the end of it.[1]

The pack ships Deeper and Darker 1.3.2, and it has been part of the pack since a much earlier build, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[2]

What you get

  • A new dimension, the Otherside, with its own biomes to explore: the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns.[1]
  • An ancient temple structure, described as the home of the warden. Be careful breaking the ancient vases inside, because that can awaken an ancient lurker.[1]
  • Over a hundred new blocks for building, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]
  • New gear, including a warden set of armor and tools, an upgrade to the elytra, and the sculk transmitter.[1]
  • Eight new mobs, one of which is a miniboss.[1]

Where it fits in progression

Getting into the Otherside is gated behind the toughest fight in vanilla: you kill the warden and use its heart to open the way. That puts Deeper and Darker firmly in the mid-to-late game for most players, well after you are comfortable sneaking around the Deep Dark.[1]

The pack's quest book does pick up the mod's gear in the basic tools chapter, where several quests accept Deeper and Darker items as one of a few valid options. a quest in "?" takes a Resonarium Pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Resonarium Sword, a quest in "?" accepts a Warden Pickaxe, and a quest in "?" specifically wants a Warden Sword.[3]

Tip: Because most of those quests accept alternatives from other mods, you can complete them without touching Deeper and Darker at all. The warden sword quest is the one that only takes this mod's gear.[3]

Deeper and Darker is not on the ATM Star quest path in this pack, so treat it as optional content: a dimension to raid for building blocks and gear when you want a change of scenery, not a required step toward the star.[3]

How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?

3 parts

Deeper and Darker builds on the Deep Dark you already know, and then takes it a lot further: a whole new dimension called the Otherside, with its own biomes, blocks, mobs and gear. Everything in this mod points the same way, so your first steps are really about getting down to the Deep Dark safely and coming back out with the right loot.[1]

Step one: find an Ancient City

Your starting point is an Ancient City in the Deep Dark. That is where the mod's progression begins, and it is also where you meet the Warden, which is the gatekeeper for everything else here.[1][4]

Once you can handle it, the Warden is the key: you kill it and take its heart, and that heart is what opens the way into the Otherside. Don't plan on doing this in iron armour with a stone sword.[1][4]

Watch out: Get your fight gear sorted before you go. Netherite tools and weapons are worth having in your pocket anyway, because the mod's best early upgrades are applied on top of netherite gear rather than crafted from scratch.[4]

Step two: into the Otherside

The Otherside is the mod's dimension, and it is where the bulk of the content lives. You have four biomes to explore (the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns) plus an ancient temple structure that is the Warden's home. Be careful breaking the ancient vases in there; smashing them can wake up an ancient lurker.[1]

While you're down there, grab wood. The echoing forest and blooming caverns give you two new wood types, and both turn into planks the normal way, which unlocks the whole familiar set of stairs, slabs, doors, signs and boats.[1][5]

Bloom Planks work the same way from bloom stems.

For building, gloomslate and sculk stone are your two main stone families, and they both follow the vanilla stone progression: cobbled, polished, bricks, tiles, cut and smooth variants, each with their own stairs, slabs and walls.[1][5]

Step three: Warden tools

The first real gear goal is the Warden set. You reinforce an echo shard into a Reinforced Echo Shard, then use the mod's Smithing Template at a smithing table to upgrade netherite armour, weapons or tools.[4][5]

These upgrades are worth doing early because the pack's quest book asks for them directly: one quest wants a Warden Sword, and another accepts a Warden Pickaxe as one of its options.[3][5]

Unverified The exact way to obtain the Warden upgrade smithing template and to reinforce an echo shard isn't covered by the pack files used for this page. Check the recipe viewer in game for the in-pack versions. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Tip: After the Warden set, the mod still has plenty left: a sculk transmitter, a sonorous staff, an elytra upgrade, and eight new mobs including a miniboss. Treat the Warden tools as the doorway, not the finish line.[1][4]

Same as in the All the Mods 10 6.6 guide

Heads up: the sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, so I won't make any up. What they do cover is how you get into the Otherside, how the warden gear is upgraded, and how the building blocks are crafted. The project page also says a new update branch is planned to add progression to the dimension and more biomes and entities, so what follows is the mod as the page and the lang file currently describe it.[1][6]

Getting into the Otherside

As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds a whole new dimension called the Otherside, with biomes like the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns. To enter it, you kill the warden and use its heart. The in-game advancements back this up: one tells you to slay the Warden and take its heart, and another points you to the depths below the bedrock.[1][6]

The project page also says there is an ancient temple that is the warden's home. It warns you to be careful when breaking the ancient vases there, so you don't awaken an ancient lurker.[1]

Warden gear and the upgrade template

The project page currently lists a warden set of armor and tools for the mod. The upgrade uses a smithing template: the base slot takes netherite armor, a weapon or a tool, and the additions slot takes a Reinforced Echo Shard. There is an advancement for reinforcing an Echo Shard, and another for wearing a full set of Warden Armor.[1][6]

Sculk-themed extras

  • Catalysis is an enchantment that spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[6]
  • Sculk Smite is an enchantment that increases damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden.[6]
  • The Sculk Transmitter has a tooltip that shows the coordinates it is located at. There is also an advancement for acquiring one.[6]
  • Crystallized Amber can have a tooltip saying it contains a Sculk Leech.[6]
  • As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, and an upgrade to the elytra.[1]

Crafting the building blocks

The project page currently says the mod adds over a hundred blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]

The recipes shown for these blocks are plain crafting recipes listed as the mod's own, and the sources show no pack changes to them. Only part of the full recipe list is visible to me.[7]

Bloom wood gives you the usual set of building pieces, such as Bloom Door, Bloom Fence and Bloom Boat. The planks are the starting point.[7]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any bloom stem

Bloom Planks accept any item from the bloom stems tag.

Boats with chests have their own recipe, so you can make one by combining a boat with a chest. Echo wood has boat and chest boat recipes as well.[7]

The stone types, gloomslate and sculk stone, come in cobbled, smooth, cut and chiseled forms, such as Cobbled Gloomslate, Cobbled Sculk Stone, Cut Gloomslate and Cut Sculk Stone. Slabs, stairs and walls exist for the cobbled and cut versions.[7]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?

4 parts

Deeper and Darker in this pack is a gear-and-blocks mod rather than a machine mod, so its progression is short and sharp: you go from Resonarium tools to Warden tools, with the Warden set sitting on top of netherite. Both tiers show up in the pack's quest book, in the basic tools chapter.[3][5]

Where the tiers sit in the quests

So if you are running this mod as your weapon line, Resonarium clears the early tool quests and Warden gear clears the later, tighter ones. The Warden sword quest is the only one in that chapter with a single accepted item, which makes it a nice checkpoint to aim at.[3]

Resonarium

Resonarium is the base material for this tier. Combining it with a scute gives you a Resonarium Plate, which is the refined form you will want to stockpile before moving on.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: deeperdarker:resonarium_plate

Warden gear

The Warden tier is a smithing upgrade, not a crafting recipe. First you turn Warden Carapace into a Reinforced Echo Shard together with an echo shard and phantom membrane.[5]

With the shard and the mod's Smithing Template in hand, you upgrade a netherite pickaxe or netherite sword at a smithing table to get the Warden versions.[5]

Warden SwordMod recipe

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: deeperdarker:warden_sword_smithing

Watch out: Both Warden upgrades consume a finished netherite tool as the base, so do not burn your last netherite on something else if you are chasing the Warden sword quest.[5]

The block lines are separate

Everything else the mod adds is decorative and sits outside the tool progression. Sculk Stone and Gloomslate both follow the vanilla stone pattern: cobbled to polished, polished to bricks, bricks to tiles and chiseled variants, with slabs, stairs and walls at every step. Grime Balls press into Sculk Grime and Grime Bricks into Sculk Grime Bricks, and there are full wood sets for both Echo and Bloom, including planks, doors, signs and boats.[5]

Tip: None of the block chains gate the tool tiers, so you can safely ignore them on a progression run and come back for the building blocks later.[5]

How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?

4 parts

Deeper and Darker mostly connects to the rest of the pack through wood processing, one pack-added boss-tier crafting recipe, and a few quest choices. Here is everything the recipes and quests actually show.[3][5]

Wither's Compass

The pack adds its own shaped recipe for Wither's Compass, and it pulls in Heart of the Deep together with items from several other mods. Check the recipe below for the exact layout.[5]

Sawing echo and bloom wood

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes that turn any echo log into Echo Planks and any bloom stem into Bloom Planks, with Sawdust as a bonus output. Mekanism itself also has sawing recipes for echo logs and for the Echo Hanging Sign, both giving echo planks and sawdust.[5]

Farmer's Delight cutting

Farmer's Delight's own cutting recipes work on echo wood. Cutting an Echo Log gives you a Stripped Echo Log and Tree Bark, and cutting Echo Wood gives Stripped Echo Wood and tree bark. These are the mod's recipes, not pack changes.[5]

Quests

In the basic_tools quest chapter, Deeper and Darker gear counts alongside tools from other mods, so you can pick whichever you can get first. The Resonarium Pickaxe is one of several pickaxe options in a quest in "?", alongside pickaxes from Eternal Starlight, Aquaculture and Undergarden.[3]

The Warden Sword has its own quest, a quest in "?", with no other mod's item as an alternative.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Deeper and Darker?

1 part

In this pack, Deeper and Darker shows up in a single quest chapter, "basic_tools". All four quests there are untitled, so they appear only by their IDs. Each one asks you to hand in a tool, and most accept an alternative from another mod.[3]

What the basic_tools quests ask for

Three of the four quests accept a tool from another mod, so you don't have to go into the Deeper and Darker dimension for them. The Warden Sword quest has no alternative, so that one does need this mod.[3]

Unverified The order in which these quests unlock or should be completed is not confirmed by the available quest data, so don't rely on any particular order.

Which Deeper and Darker config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Deeper and Darker's project page is all about content, not settings. The mod adds a new dimension called the Otherside, which you enter by killing the warden and using its heart. It also brings new biomes, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]

Unverified We couldn't confirm which config options Deeper and Darker offers in All the Mods 10 8.1, or how this pack sets them. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so this section can't say which values the pack changed from the mod defaults. If you want to tweak anything, check the mod's config file in your own instance.

What changed in Deeper and Darker between versions?

1 part

There isn't much version history to report for Deeper and Darker in this pack, but here is what the sources confirm.[2]

All the Mods 10 0.64 ships Deeper and Darker 1.3.2, using the NeoForge 1.21 build. The mod was first included in All the Mods 10 0.47 or earlier.[2]

Deeper and Darker 1.3.2

The mod's own changelog for 1.3.2 describes a fix for a critical server crash that happened when using other mods' armor.[8]

The full list of 1.3.2 changes is on the mod's release page, which I can't reproduce here.[8]

Unverified There are no pack changelog entries for this mod in the sources, so it is unverified whether the pack changed any of its values or recipes between releases.
