What is Deeper and Darker?

2 parts

Deeper and Darker takes the Deep Dark and makes it a much bigger deal. It adds new blocks, items, armor and mobs based on the Deep Dark biome, plus a whole new dimension called the Otherside.[1]

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Deeper and Darker version 1.3.5. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist.[2]

What you'll find

  • The Otherside dimension, with biomes including the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns.[1]
  • An ancient temple that is home to the Warden. Be careful breaking the ancient vases there, because they can awaken an ancient lurker.[1]
  • New building blocks such as gloomslate and sculk stone, plus a new wood type.[1]
  • A Warden armor and tool set, an elytra upgrade and the sculk transmitter.[1]
  • New mobs, including a miniboss.[1]

To get into the Otherside, you kill the Warden and use its heart. If you like exploring dangerous places and fighting tough mobs for good gear, this mod is for you.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

Deeper and Darker gear counts toward the pack's early tool quests. a quest in "?" accepts the Resonarium Pickaxe and a quest in "?" accepts the Resonarium Sword, with items from other mods as alternatives. a quest in "?" accepts the Warden Pickaxe, and a quest in "?" asks specifically for the Warden Sword.[3]

In the armor chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the full Warden set: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots.[4]

The pack's quest chapter named chapter_2_the_star also includes a quest, a quest in "?", that asks you to obtain Heart of the Deep.[5]

Unverified Whether this quest is actually required on the ATM Star crafting path is not confirmed by the provided sources.

How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?

4 parts

Deeper and Darker is all about the Deep Dark. It adds new blocks, items, armor and a whole new dimension called the Otherside. This section walks you through the first things to go after in All the Mods 10, in a sensible order.[1]

Step 1: Take down the Warden

Your main goal early on is the Otherside, and the way in is to kill the Warden and use its heart. The mod's advancements point you the same way. They start with finding an Ancient City and build up to slaying the Warden and taking its heart.[1][6]

The pack builds this into its questline. The quest a quest in "?" in the "chapter_2_the_star" chapter asks you to obtain Heart of the Deep, so keep that item once you have it.[5]

Tip: The mod adds a Sculk Smite enchantment that increases damage against sculk mobs such as the Shattered and the Warden. It's a great pick for a weapon you plan to take into the Deep Dark.[6]

Unverified The sources don't confirm exactly how Heart of the Deep is used to open the way into the Otherside, or whether it is the same item as the Warden's heart. Check it in-game with JEI before you commit to a plan. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Gather your first Otherside materials

The Otherside has four biomes to explore: the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns. The mod adds over a hundred new blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type. Your first crafts will be turning logs and stems into planks, which unlock all the matching doors, fences, signs and boats.[1][7]

Watch out: Look out for the ancient temple, the home of the Warden. Be careful when breaking the ancient vases inside, because you can awaken an ancient lurker.[1]

Step 3: Upgrade to Warden gear

Warden armor and tools are made with smithing table upgrades that use the mod's own Smithing Template. The pack rewards them in its quests. a quest in "?" asks for Warden Sword, and a quest in "?" accepts Warden Pickaxe.[3][7]

Resonarium tools

The "basic_tools" chapter also counts Resonarium gear. a quest in "?" accepts Resonarium Pickaxe, and a quest in "?" accepts Resonarium Sword. Other mods' tools also satisfy both quests.[3]

Unverified The provided sources don't include the in-pack recipes for the Resonarium tools, so it's not confirmed here how you make them. Look them up in JEI. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Deeper and Darker work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 6.6 guide

Heads up: the sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, so I won't make any up. What they do cover is how you get into the Otherside, how the warden gear is upgraded, and how the building blocks are crafted. The project page also says a new update branch is planned to add progression to the dimension and more biomes and entities, so what follows is the mod as the page and the lang file currently describe it.[1][6]

Getting into the Otherside

As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds a whole new dimension called the Otherside, with biomes like the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns. To enter it, you kill the warden and use its heart. The in-game advancements back this up: one tells you to slay the Warden and take its heart, and another points you to the depths below the bedrock.[1][6]

The project page also says there is an ancient temple that is the warden's home. It warns you to be careful when breaking the ancient vases there, so you don't awaken an ancient lurker.[1]

Warden gear and the upgrade template

The project page currently lists a warden set of armor and tools for the mod. The upgrade uses a smithing template: the base slot takes netherite armor, a weapon or a tool, and the additions slot takes a Reinforced Echo Shard. There is an advancement for reinforcing an Echo Shard, and another for wearing a full set of Warden Armor.[1][6]

Sculk-themed extras

  • Catalysis is an enchantment that spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[6]
  • Sculk Smite is an enchantment that increases damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden.[6]
  • The Sculk Transmitter has a tooltip that shows the coordinates it is located at. There is also an advancement for acquiring one.[6]
  • Crystallized Amber can have a tooltip saying it contains a Sculk Leech.[6]
  • As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, and an upgrade to the elytra.[1]

Crafting the building blocks

The project page currently says the mod adds over a hundred blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]

The recipes shown for these blocks are plain crafting recipes listed as the mod's own, and the sources show no pack changes to them. Only part of the full recipe list is visible to me.[8]

Bloom wood gives you the usual set of building pieces, such as Bloom Door, Bloom Fence and Bloom Boat. The planks are the starting point.[8]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any bloom stem

Recipe id: deeperdarker:bloom_planks

Bloom Planks accept any item from the bloom stems tag.

Boats with chests have their own recipe, so you can make one by combining a boat with a chest. Echo wood has boat and chest boat recipes as well.[8]

The stone types, gloomslate and sculk stone, come in cobbled, smooth, cut and chiseled forms, such as Cobbled Gloomslate, Cobbled Sculk Stone, Cut Gloomslate and Cut Sculk Stone. Slabs, stairs and walls exist for the cobbled and cut versions.[8]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.11 guide

Deeper and Darker gives you a Resonarium gear line and a Warden gear line in this pack. The quest book ranks Warden higher: its pickaxe quest is Tier 5 and its sword quest is 9 Attack Damage, against Tier 4 and 7 Attack Damage for Resonarium. You can follow the quests as a checklist.[9]

Resonarium tools

The Resonarium Pickaxe is one of the pickaxes that completes the Tier 4 quest a quest in "?" in the Basic Tools chapter. That quest also accepts pickaxes from other mods. The Resonarium Sword does the same for the 7 Attack Damage quest a quest in "?", which also accepts other swords.[9]

Both tools are smithing recipes that use a Resonarium Plate. Here are the pack's recipes.[10]

Warden tools and armor

The top tier is Warden gear. The Warden Pickaxe completes the Tier 5 quest a quest in "?", and the Warden Sword completes the 9 Attack Damage quest a quest in "?". Both quests sit in the Basic Tools chapter, and both also accept items from other mods in some cases, so check the quest's task list.[9]

Warden gear is made through smithing upgrades. Here is how the Reinforced Echo Shard is crafted, followed by the tool upgrades.[10]

Heart of the Deep

The quest a quest in "?" follows the Deeper and Darker quest and sits in the Chapter 3: The ATM Star chapter. When a Warden dies, it has a chance to drop a Heart of the Deep. You can use it for the ATM Star, or to activate the Portal in the Ancient City.[12]

Watch out: The Ancient City Portal won't activate if anything is inside it, and that includes Sculk. Clear it out completely before you use the Heart of the Deep.[12]

How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?

4 parts

Deeper and Darker ties into the rest of the pack in three main ways: a pack-added endgame recipe that uses Heart of the Deep, machine recipes for its wood, and decorative furniture made from its Bloom and Echo wood. Quests also reward you for picking up its gear.[3][4][7]

Heart of the Deep and the Wither's Compass

The Heart of the Deep comes from killing the warden, and you normally use it to enter the Otherside, the mod's new dimension.[1]

The pack adds its own recipe for the Wither's Compass that needs the Heart of the Deep. That recipe also uses items from several other mods, including 64x Netherstar Generator, Wither Builder, Nether Star Crux and Witherproof Bricks. Beating the warden is part of that big crafting chain.[7]

The "chapter_2_the_star" quest chapter also has a quest, a quest in "?", that asks you to get a Heart of the Deep.[5]

Tip: The Heart of the Deep is used both to reach the Otherside and in the Wither's Compass recipe. Plan your warden fights with both uses in mind.[1][7]

Sawing Bloom and Echo wood

The pack adds sawing recipes so you can turn Deeper and Darker wood into planks in machines. Mekanism's sawing recipe makes Bloom Planks plus Sawdust as a byproduct. The Productive Trees sawmill has recipes for both Bloom Planks and Echo Planks, and these also involve Sawdust.[7]

Bibliocraft furniture

If you like decorating your base, Bibliocraft furniture comes in Bloom and Echo wood versions. You'll find display cases, seats and several seat back styles (small, flat, raised, tall and fancy) in colours including black, blue, brown, cyan and gray. Examples are the Cyan Echo Display Case and the Black Bloom Seat.[7]

The fancy and tall seat backs are crafted from the matching flat seat back, so make the flat version first.[7]

Quests that use Deeper and Darker gear

The mod's warden armor and tools, plus its Resonarium gear, show up in the pack's tools and armor quest chapters. Some of these quests accept gear from other mods as an alternative.[1][3][4]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Deeper and Darker?

3 parts

Deeper and Darker shows up in three quest chapters in this pack: the basic tools chapter, the basic armor chapter, and the chapter_2_the_star chapter. Most of these quests are simple item checks, so you complete them by getting the item into your inventory.[3][4][5]

Basic Tools

The basic_tools chapter has the most Deeper and Darker content. Every quest below unlocks from the same prerequisite quest in that chapter, so once you reach that point you can do them in any order you like.[3]

Basic Armor

In the basic_armor chapter, a quest in "?" wants the full Warden set: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots. You need every piece to finish it. The quest data doesn't list a prerequisite for this one.[4]

Chapter 2: The Star

The chapter_2_the_star chapter has a quest in "?", which asks for a Heart of the Deep. It unlocks after an earlier quest in that same chapter, so you'll reach it by working through that chapter first.[5]

Unverified The quest files don't say what order to tackle these chapters in relative to each other. A natural path is to make the Resonarium gear first and the Warden gear later, but the pack's quests don't confirm that.

Which Deeper and Darker config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Deeper and Darker's project page is all about content, not settings. The mod adds a new dimension called the Otherside, which you enter by killing the warden and using its heart. It also brings new biomes, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]

Unverified We couldn't confirm which config options Deeper and Darker offers in All the Mods 10 8.1, or how this pack sets them. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so this section can't say which values the pack changed from the mod defaults. If you want to tweak anything, check the mod's config file in your own instance.

What changed in Deeper and Darker between versions?

The sources only cover a small slice of this mod's history in the pack, so this section is short. Deeper and Darker has been in All the Mods 10 since version 2.2 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.3.5 of it.[2]

  • All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier: Deeper and Darker was first included in the pack at some point up to this release. The exact first version is not confirmed.[2]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47: updated from 1.3.4 to 1.3.5.[13]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5: still on 1.3.5, using the NeoForge 1.21.1 build of the mod.[2]

Unverified What actually changed between Deeper and Darker 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 is unverified. No mod changelogs were available for the jars shipped in the pack, so there are no confirmed details about fixes, additions or balance changes.
