What is Deeper and Darker?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Deeper and Darker expands the Deep Dark biome, and its biggest feature is a whole new dimension called the Otherside. The Otherside has four biomes to explore: the Deeplands, the Echoing Forest, the Overcast Columns and the Blooming Caverns. You can also find an ancient temple that the project page calls the home of the warden. The mod adds over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, an elytra upgrade, the Sculk Transmitter, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.4.1 of the mod. The project page mentions a big update in development that will add more progression, biomes and mobs to the dimension. This guide covers the version that's actually in the pack.[1][2]
Who it's for
If you like exploring, this mod gives you a whole dimension to dig into. It's also great for builders, because the Otherside is full of new stone like Cobbled Sculk Stone and Cobbled Gloomslate, plus new wood from Echo Log and Blooming Stem. If you're after gear, Warden armor, tools and weapons are upgrades to your Netherite gear. You make them with a Smithing Template and a Reinforced Echo Shard.[1][3]
Where it fits in the pack
Everything starts with the Warden. When it dies, it can drop a Heart of the Deep, along with Warden Carapace and Echo Shards that you'll need for crafting later. Use the Heart on the Reinforced Deepslate portal frame in an Ancient City to open the way to the Otherside. The pack's Deeper and Darker quest chapter walks you through this, starting with "Heart of the Deep" quest.[3][4]
The Heart of the Deep is also part of the ATM Star path. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star asks for one, so save a Heart for it.[4]
The mod also shows up in the Basic Tools chapter, where the Resonarium Pickaxe is one of the accepted options for a Tier 4 quest.[5]
How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?
5 parts
Deeper and Darker is all about the Otherside, and in this pack you get there by beating the Warden first. Here's the order I'd go in, and why each step matters.[1][6]
Kill the Warden and grab the Heart of the Deep
Everything starts with Heart of the Deep. When a Warden dies it has a chance to drop one. You use it on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to activate the portal to the Otherside, and nothing can be inside the portal, Sculk included. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest walks you through it. The same Heart is also used for the ATM Star.[6][7]
The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, and you'll need both for the next step. It usually drops more than one carapace.[6][8]
Craft a Reinforced Echo Shard
Reinforced Echo Shard is the upgrade material for all the Warden gear. Phantom Membrane is the easy part, since Phantoms spawn after you haven't slept for a few days. The easiest Echo Shards come from looting Ancient Cities. See "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest for the details.[6][8]

Find and duplicate the Warden Upgrade Template
Smithing Template is found in chests in Ancient Cities, and the quest "Warden Upgrade Template" quest comes after visiting one. Once you have one you can duplicate it. The pack changed this recipe, so go by the one below rather than what you remember from the mod.[6][8]

Upgrade your Netherite gear
With a template and a Reinforced Echo Shard, you upgrade Netherite pieces into Warden gear at the smithing table: the template's base slot takes a Netherite armor piece, weapon or tool, and the additions slot takes the Reinforced Echo Shard. Warden Armor is a direct upgrade to Netherite. Each piece has 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite counterpart, but you lose the Knockback Resistance. The quest "Warden Armor" quest comes after the template and the shard, and the Basic Armor chapter has its own quest, "Warden Armor" quest, for the full set.[6][8][9][10]
The Warden tools barely change from Netherite. The pickaxe has the same tier and speed, and only the Attack Damage goes up. The sword is a good first upgrade, since the Basic Tools chapter lists it at 9 Attack Damage.[6][11]
Longer-term goals
- Sonorous Staff lets you fire a Sonic Blast. Hold right click to charge it, then release. It has a slight cooldown and it has durability. Besides the Heart of the Deep, the quest says the other parts come from the Stalker and Shattered mobs. See "Sonorous Staff" quest.[6][8]
- Soul Elytra works like a normal Elytra with more durability and Armor Points. It can't be repaired with Phantom Membranes, but Enchantments can still repair it. See "Soul Elytra" quest.[6][8]

How does Deeper and Darker work?
4 parts
Heads up: the sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, so I won't make any up. What they do cover is how you get into the Otherside, how the warden gear is upgraded, and how the building blocks are crafted. The project page also says a new update branch is planned to add progression to the dimension and more biomes and entities, so what follows is the mod as the page and the lang file currently describe it.[1][10]
Getting into the Otherside
As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds a whole new dimension called the Otherside, with biomes like the deeplands, echoing forest, overcast columns and blooming caverns. To enter it, you kill the warden and use its heart. The in-game advancements back this up: one tells you to slay the Warden and take its heart, and another points you to the depths below the bedrock.[1][10]
The project page also says there is an ancient temple that is the warden's home. It warns you to be careful when breaking the ancient vases there, so you don't awaken an ancient lurker.[1]
Warden gear and the upgrade template
The project page currently lists a warden set of armor and tools for the mod. The upgrade uses a smithing template: the base slot takes netherite armor, a weapon or a tool, and the additions slot takes a Reinforced Echo Shard. There is an advancement for reinforcing an Echo Shard, and another for wearing a full set of Warden Armor.[1][10]
Sculk-themed extras
- Catalysis is an enchantment that spreads sculk when mobs are killed.[10]
- Sculk Smite is an enchantment that increases damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden.[10]
- The Sculk Transmitter has a tooltip that shows the coordinates it is located at. There is also an advancement for acquiring one.[10]
- Crystallized Amber can have a tooltip saying it contains a Sculk Leech.[10]
- As the project page currently describes it, the mod adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, and an upgrade to the elytra.[1]
Crafting the building blocks
The project page currently says the mod adds over a hundred blocks, including gloomslate, sculk stone and a new wood type.[1]
The recipes shown for these blocks are plain crafting recipes listed as the mod's own, and the sources show no pack changes to them. Only part of the full recipe list is visible to me.[8]
Bloom wood gives you the usual set of building pieces, such as Bloom Door, Bloom Fence and Bloom Boat. The planks are the starting point.[8]
Bloom Planks accept any item from the bloom stems tag.
Boats with chests have their own recipe, so you can make one by combining a boat with a chest. Echo wood has boat and chest boat recipes as well.[8]
The stone types, gloomslate and sculk stone, come in cobbled, smooth, cut and chiseled forms, such as Cobbled Gloomslate, Cobbled Sculk Stone, Cut Gloomslate and Cut Sculk Stone. Slabs, stairs and walls exist for the cobbled and cut versions.[8]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?
5 parts
Deeper and Darker in this pack is built around one big boss: the Warden. You explore the Otherside, take down the Warden, then turn its drops into gear that upgrades Netherite. Here's the path the quests lay out, tier by tier.[6][9]
Stage 1: Exploring the Otherside
The Otherside has a few biomes, and the quests send you through them in a loose order. Cobbled Sculk Stone is the common building stone and spawns almost everywhere except the Overcast Columns. There, Cobbled Gloomslate takes its place and works the same way. The related quests are "Sculk Stone" quest and "Gloomslate" quest.[6]
Food is scarce here. Bloom Berries from the Blooming Caverns are the only food source in the Otherside, so grab some early ("Bloom Berries" quest).[6]
The pack has also changed the crushing recipes for these stones. Mekanism crushing turns Sculk Stone, Gloomslate and their tile variants into the cobbled versions. Create crushing of ores in these stones gives the usual drops plus a Nugget of Experience and cobbled stone.[8]
Stage 2: Beating the Warden
The Warden is the gate for everything important. It has a chance to drop Heart of the Deep, which you use on a Reinforced Deepslate frame to open the portal to the Otherside. Nothing can block the frame, and that includes Sculk. The same item is also used for the ATM Star ("Heart of the Deep" quest, "Heart of the Deep" quest).[6][7]
The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, and the quest says it usually drops more than one carapace. These feed into Reinforced Echo Shard ("Reinforced Echo Shard" quest):[6]

Stage 3: Warden gear
The Smithing Template is found in chests in Ancient Cities ("Warden Upgrade Template" quest). You can duplicate it. The quest text mentions 7 Diamonds, but the duplication recipe is flagged as changed by the pack, so trust the recipe card below over the quest text.[6][8]

Recipe id: deeperdarker:warden_upgrade_smithing_template
Every Warden piece is a smithing upgrade of its Netherite counterpart. Here are the helmet and the pickaxe as examples, and the rest follow the same pattern.[8]
- Armor ("Warden Armor" quest, "Warden Armor" quest): each piece has 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite counterpart, but no more Knockback Resistance. The Basic Armor chapter pitches it as the upgrade to pick over Allthemodium or anything else.[6][9]
- Tools ("Warden Tools" quest): the pickaxe, shovel and hoe keep the same tier and speed as Netherite. The only real change is higher attack damage, which makes the Warden Hoe hit harder than every vanilla hoe.[6]
- Weapons ("Warden Weapons" quest): the sword and axe do 1 Heart more damage than Netherite and have more durability. The Basic Tools chapter lists the Warden Sword at 9 attack damage.[6][11]
- Mining tier: the Basic Tools chapter lists the Warden Pickaxe as a Tier 5 pickaxe, next to the Undergarden forgotten pickaxe.[11]
Stage 4: Mob-drop gear
The quests for Sonorous Staff and Soul Elytra unlock after you've dealt with the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper. Both are built from drops of those mobs. The Sonorous Staff also needs a Heart of the Deep from the Warden.[6]

The staff fires a Sonic Blast when you hold Right Click to charge it and then release. It has a slight cooldown and uses durability. The Soul Elytra flies like a normal Elytra but has more durability and Armor Points. Phantom Membranes can't repair it, though enchantments can.[6]

Resonarium tools
The Basic Tools chapter also tracks Resonarium gear. The Resonarium Pickaxe counts as a Tier 4 pickaxe, and the Resonarium Sword is listed at 7 attack damage. Both are smithing recipes that start from a plain iron tool.[8][11]
Unverified The sources don't say where the Resonarium Plate comes from, so how to get one in this pack is unverified.
How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Deeper and Darker is mostly its own adventure in the Otherside, but All the Mods 10 ties it into the rest of the pack in a few spots. Most of these connections were added or changed by the pack itself. They fall into three groups: a big endgame crafting recipe, sawmill processing for the two new wood types, and a whole range of furniture.[12]
Heart of the Deep and the Wither's Compass
The pack adds a shaped recipe for the Wither's Compass that needs a Heart of the Deep. It also pulls in items from several other mods, such as the 64x Netherstar Generator, the Wither Builder, the Nether Star Crux and Witherproof Bricks. That makes it a real cross-mod project, so check the full recipe below before you start gathering.[12]

Sawing Bloom and Echo wood
The pack adds sawmill recipes for both Otherside wood types. You can run a Blooming Stem through a Mekanism sawing recipe to get Bloom Planks plus Sawdust as a byproduct.[12]

BiblioCraft furniture in Otherside wood
If you like decorating, both woods get their own BiblioCraft furniture. Bloom Slab and Echo Slab are used to craft display cases, seats and several seat back styles: small, raised, flat, tall and fancy. Each comes in wool colors including black, blue, brown, cyan and gray.[12]
- Display cases, such as the Cyan Bloom Display Case, combine the wood's slab with colored wool and glass.[12]
- Seats, like the Cyan Echo Seat, and the small, raised and flat seat backs use the slab and colored wool, and most of them also need wooden rods.[12]
- Tall and fancy seat backs are upgrades: you make them from a flat seat back of the same color and wood plus another slab.[12]
These furniture recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so trust the in-game recipe view over any default recipe you might remember. It's a nice way to show off the wood colors too: Bloom planks are light blue, and Echo wood items are a light, almost mint green.[3][12]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Deeper and Darker?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Deeper and Darker gets its own full quest chapter, plus a few appearances in the Basic Tools, Basic Armor and ATM Star chapters. The main chapter follows a clear path: beat the Warden, get into the Otherside, gear up with Warden equipment, and then collect everything the new biomes have to offer.[3][4][5][13]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: Warden progression
- "Heart of the Deep" quest unlocks after the Kill the Warden quest. It asks for a Heart of the Deep, which you use on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside. The frame has to be completely clear of blocks or the portal won't light. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which you'll need for crafting later.[3]
- "Warden Upgrade Template" quest unlocks after The Otherside and Visit an Ancient City quests. It asks for a Smithing Template. You find these in chests in Ancient Cities, and you can craft copies of them.[3]
- "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest unlocks after The Otherside and Kill the Warden. It asks for a crafted Reinforced Echo Shard. The quest points you to Phantoms, Ancient City loot and the Warden's Carapace drops for the materials.[3]
- Once you have both the template and the shard, three quests open up. "Warden Weapons" quest asks for a Warden Sword or a Warden Axe. "Warden Tools" quest asks for a Warden Pickaxe, Warden Shovel or Warden Hoe. "Warden Armor" quest asks for all four armor pieces: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots.[3]
Warden gear is a Netherite upgrade that uses the template and a Reinforced Echo Shard. The sword and axe each deal 1 Heart of Damage more than Netherite and have more durability. The tools mine at the same tier and speed as Netherite but hit harder. Each armor piece gives 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than Netherite, but it loses the Knockback Resistance.[3]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: exploring the Otherside
The rest of the chapter is a collection checklist. Each quest unlocks after the quest for the biome where you find the item.[3]
- Deeplands: "Sculk Tendrils" quest asks for Sculk Tendrils, which spawn rarely. "Sculk Grime" quest asks for a Grime Ball, which comes from mining Sculk Grime, the mod's version of Clay.[3]
- Echoing Forest: "Echo Trees" quest asks for an Echo Log. "Echo Soil" quest asks for Echo Soil. a quest in "Deeper and Darker" asks for Sculk Gleam, a light source that breaks fastest with a Hoe.[3]
- Blooming Caverns: "Blooming Wood" quest asks for a Blooming Stem. "Glowing Roots" quest asks for Glowing Roots. "Bloom Berries" quest asks for Bloom Berries, which you pick with Right Click and which are the only food source in the Otherside. "Ice Lilies" quest asks for an Ice Lily, which needs Shears. "Blooming Moss" quest asks for a Blooming Moss Block.[3]
- Blooming Caverns or Deeplands: "Sculk Vines" quest asks for Sculk Vines.[3]
- Deeplands, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns: "Sculk Stone" quest asks for Cobbled Sculk Stone.[3]
- Overcast Columns: "Gloomslate" quest asks for Cobbled Gloomslate. "Gloomy Cacti" quest asks for a Gloomy Cactus. "Crystallized Amber" quest asks for Crystallized Amber, which needs Silk Touch.[3]
The Deeper and Darker chapter: loot and mob drops
- "Sculk Transmitter" quest unlocks after the Ancient Temples quest and asks for a very rare Sculk Transmitter from Ancient Temple chests. To use it, Shift Right Click a block with a GUI to bind it, and you can then open that block remotely.[3]
- "Soundproof Glass" quest unlocks after the Sculk Snapper quest and asks for Soundproof Glass. It blocks sound from Sculk Sensors and Shriekers the same way Wool does.[3]
- "Soul Elytra" quest and "Sonorous Staff" quest both unlock after the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper quests. They ask for a Soul Elytra and a Sonorous Staff, which are crafted from those mobs' drops.[3]
Other chapters
- Basic Tools: a Tier 4 pickaxe quest accepts a Resonarium Pickaxe, a Tier 5 quest accepts a Warden Pickaxe, a 7 Attack Damage quest accepts a Resonarium Sword, and a 9 Attack Damage quest asks for a Warden Sword. These are a quest in "Basic Tools", a quest in "Basic Tools", a quest in "Basic Tools" and a quest in "Basic Tools". Each of them has other mods' items as alternatives.[5]
- Basic Armor: "Warden Armor" quest asks for the full Warden Armor set, pitched as a Netherite upgrade that needs a few Warden drops.[13]
- Chapter 3: The ATM Star: "Heart of the Deep" quest unlocks after the Deeper and Darker quest and asks for a Heart of the Deep, which is used for the ATM Star. Hang on to one![4]
Which Deeper and Darker config options matter?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Deeper and Darker's project page is all about content, not settings. The mod adds a new dimension called the Otherside, which you enter by killing the warden and using its heart. It also brings new biomes, over a hundred new blocks, a warden set of armor and tools, and 8 new mobs, including a miniboss.[1]
Unverified We couldn't confirm which config options Deeper and Darker offers in All the Mods 10 8.1, or how this pack sets them. The pack's config files for this mod weren't available, so this section can't say which values the pack changed from the mod defaults. If you want to tweak anything, check the mod's config file in your own instance.
What changed in Deeper and Darker between versions?
1 part
Deeper and Darker has been part of All the Mods 10 for a long time. It was first included in version 2.3 of the pack or earlier, so it's been around for nearly the whole life of the pack.[14]
Pack updates
- All the Mods 10 2.47: Deeper and Darker was updated from 1.3.4 to 1.3.5.[15]
- All the Mods 10 6.6: the pack ships Deeper and Darker 1.3.5, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[14]
So if you're playing 6.6, you're on the same version of Deeper and Darker the pack moved to back in 2.47.[14][15]
Unverified There's no confirmed list of what changed between Deeper and Darker 1.3.4 and 1.3.5, or of any version changes between the mod's first appearance in the pack and 2.47, so those details aren't covered here.
