What is Modern Industrialization?

1 part

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate goal is total automation. The pack ships version 2.5.6. It's inspired by GregTech, but it goes its own way: it doesn't change how Minecraft works, and it skips the pile of crafting tools. Instead you get one optional tool for better material conversion ratios without machines.[1][2]

It's for you if you enjoy building factories, optimizing processing lines and automating everything. Machines don't come in ten tiers each. They use an overclock system that can reach 1 craft per tick if you have enough upgrades and energy. The mod also recommends installing a recipe viewer such as EMI, JEI or REI, since you'll be checking recipes constantly.[1]

Where it fits in the progression

The mod's own guide splits progression into the Steam Age and the Electric Age. In the Steam Age you build your first factories to produce what the next stage needs. Most of those setups become obsolete afterwards, so don't over-invest in them. The Electric Age setups are meant to be permanent, because you can keep upgrading them.[3]

You start with the Forge Hammer for basic processing. Then the Steam Mining Drill lets you mine 3x3 blocks at a time with Silk Touch. It needs water and solid fuel.[4]

You enter the Electric Age by converting steam into electricity. The pack's quest book mirrors this in its chapters: Steam Age: New Beginnings, Electric Age, Digital Age and The End Game. The Electric Age chapter opens with "The Electric Age" quest, which asks for Battery Alloy Ingot. Later, "The Digital Age" quest asks for a Digital Circuit.[5][6][7][8][9]

Watch out: The mod's guide strongly discourages using it alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines work best when they run continuously, and on-demand storage makes your progress extremely slow and inefficient.[3]

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and its progression has two stages: the Steam Age first, then the Electric Age. In the Steam Age you build the first factories that make the resources for the second stage. Here is the order I'd go in.[3]

Tip: Most Steam Age setups become obsolete once you reach the Electric Age, so don't sink too much effort into them. Electric Age setups are meant to be permanent.[3]

Step by step

  1. Craft a Forge Hammer. It handles the basic processing steps before you have machines, and it is what starts your journey with the mod.[4][10]
  2. Put iron, copper or tin ore in the Forge Hammer and you get 2 raw ores per ore. Using a Hammer in your hand raises that ratio and unlocks more recipes, at the cost of some durability. Every raw ore can then be smelted into an ingot.[4]
  3. Make a Steam Mining Drill so you don't need a Silk Touch pickaxe. It mines 3x3 blocks, has Silk Touch built in, and needs both water and solid fuel such as coal. Right-click a water source to fill it, and right-click fuel items onto it to refuel.[4]
  4. Make bronze. Hammer copper and tin ingots into dusts in the Forge Hammer, combine the dusts into bronze dust, then smelt that into a bronze ingot. A Mixer does the combining more efficiently. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[11]
  5. Move on to steel. Macerate coke into Coke Dust and combine it with iron to get Uncooked Steel Dust, which a Mixer does with a better ratio. You then need a Steam Blast Furnace to turn it into steel. It takes the controller, 29 Fire Clay Bricks and the same three hatches as the Coke Oven.[12]
  6. Get ready for cables. Mix Coke Dust with water in a Mixer to get Raw Synthetic Oil, burn it in a Steam Blast Furnace to get Synthetic Oil, then mix that with paper to make rubber sheets. Paper can be made from wood using wood pulp. Make wires in the Wiremill and combine them with rubber sheets to get cables. The guide strongly recommends automating this.[13]

Reaching the Electric Age

Crafting an Analog Circuit is what starts the Electric Age. Power comes from the Steam Turbine, which converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only connects to cables placed on its output side, and copper, silver and tin cables are LV.[10][14]

Electric machines work like steam machines, but they use electricity and overclock their recipes progressively up to 32 EU/t.[15]

The Assembler is the first machine you'll want a lot of, because it automates almost all recipes. The guide strongly suggests putting Machine Hulls, Analog Circuit, Motor, Piston, Robot Arm and Conveyor on Assembler automation as soon as possible. That makes crafting electric machines basically free.[15]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using it together with an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. It says this makes your progress extremely slow and inefficient, because electric machines work best running continuously.[3]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

6 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation. The mod splits progression into the Steam Age, where you build early factories and manage resources, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent and keep getting upgraded. This section covers how the machines, multiblocks, power and pipes actually work.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically makes steam and sends it to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam equals 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 bronze machines at once.[16]

Steam machines accept items, steam and other fluids from any side. You can lock slots from the interface so they only take one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side with optional auto-eject, and hoppers or pipes can still pull outputs from any side. A wrench rotates a machine, but breaking it with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe.[16]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as long as their energy use stays within that limit. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier as well.[17]

Multiblocks and hatches

Every multiblock has a controller, and you usually can't use the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. Forget a required hatch and the machine won't start. Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and errors, or hold a hatch to see where it can go. The Coke Oven guide page explains how multiblocks work if it is your first one. It needs 21 bricks plus 3 hatches, because the hatches count toward the 24 blocks of the structure.[18][19]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, including the sides. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or a Large Tank Hatch. Don't break the controller, or you lose everything stored inside.[20]

The Distillation Tower gives one output per layer. A tower of size 2 gives only the first output of a recipe, size 3 gives the first two, and so on. This pack keeps the mod default for the maximum tower height, set by maxDistillationTowerHeight, at 9.[21][22]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power into cables on its output side. Cables have tiers that decide how much they carry and which machines they connect to: copper, silver and tin are LV, while cupronickel and electrum are MV. A network pulls in at most 256 EU/t on LV, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV. Single-block electric machines only connect to LV cables.[14]

To move power between tiers, use Transformers. A low-to-high transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs. The Diesel Generator is an alternative power source. It produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables.[14][23]

Electric machines work like steam machines, but they progressively overclock recipes, up to 32 EU/t for regular machines and 128 EU/t for multiblocks. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock by hand by right-clicking with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[15]

An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps consuming EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull converts it to MV tier, and then it accepts only MV cables.[24]

For other mods, forgeEnergyPerEu sets how many Forge Energy units one EU is worth. The pack uses 10, the same as the mod default. The pack also enables compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat, even though the mod recommends leaving it off unless the other mods are balanced for it.[22][25]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket, or 1,000 millibuckets. Directly connected pipes link up and share storage, so the network's per-tick rate is bounded by its total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can transfer up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank with an I/O connection, which holds 16 buckets, brings that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the machines or tanks at the ends.[26]

Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect. A wrench changes the connection type. A fluid pipe holds only one fluid and by default won't connect to empty pipes or blocks, but you can force a connection with the wrench.[27]

Items and automation

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, and they start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you switch to blacklist or add items to the filter. Configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Pipes insert into higher priorities first, and they can be upgraded with motors. The base rate is set by baseItemPipeTransfer, which is 16 items per 3 seconds here, the same as the mod default.[25][27]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings. Hold it in your offhand and it applies automatically to any Item Pipe you place.[28]

  • The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuit, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts early.[15]
  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject, and you can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[15]
  • The Configurable Tank has 9 configurable slots that each hold 16 buckets, plus auto-eject.[29]
  • Bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item, and bronze tanks hold 4 buckets. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[30]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it.[17]

Pack-specific settings

This pack leaves these recipe generators on: recipes.stonecutterToCuttingMachine creates cutting machine recipes for all stonecutter recipes, and recipes.compostableToPlantOil creates plant oil recipes in the centrifuge for all compostable items. The guidebook isn't given on first join or respawn, because spawnWithGuideBook and respawnWithGuideBook are both false.[25]

The mod's guide strongly discourages pairing it with on-demand automation mods like AE2, because electric machines work best running continuously. The pack still enables compat.ae2Integration, and it changes the recipe for the ME Wire. Here is the in-pack version:[3][22][31]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization in this pack runs from the Electric Age into the Digital Age, and the quest book walks you through the Digital Age step by step. Here is how each stage works and what the quests ask for.[5][6]

The Electric Age: LV first, MV next

The Electric Age begins when you discover that steam can be converted into a new kind of energy. The Steam Turbine turns every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It is a Low Voltage (LV) machine and sends power straight to anything connected to its output side.[5][14]

  • Cable tiers decide what a cable can carry and which machines it connects to. Copper, Silver and Tin are LV. Cupronickel and Electrum are MV.[14]
  • A cable network pulls at most 256 EU/t on LV, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV.[14]
  • Single-block electric machines only connect to LV cables. To move more energy, use Transformers.[14]
  • Regular electric machines overclock up to 32 EU/t. Electric multiblocks overclock up to 128 EU/t, and upgrades in the machine menu raise those caps.[15]
  • Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull switches it to MV, and it will then only accept MV cable connections.[24]

Automate with the Assembler as early as you can. The mod's own guide suggests automating machine hulls, analog circuits, motors, pistons, robot arms and conveyors, which makes crafting electric machines basically free.[15]

Aluminum is the material for more advanced machines. Bauxite dust in an Electric Blast Furnace gives aluminum nuggets, and the Electrolyzer can split bauxite dust into aluminum dust. The same guide page also covers the Centrifuge, the Chemical Reactor and the Distillery. The blast furnace itself is built from Heatproof Machine Casing blocks and Cupronickel Coil blocks.[29][32]

Oil comes next. The Oil Drilling Rig digs up crude oil, which becomes various fuels and is used for more efficient rubber sheet production. The Diesel Generator burns those fuels, makes up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables.[23]

The Digital Age

The pack's Digital Age chapter opens with "The Digital Age" quest, which asks for a Digital Circuit. This is how the pack's Assembler recipe makes it:[6]

Digital CircuitMod recipe

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/circuit/craft/digital_circuit

After that the chapter splits into several branches. Here is the metal route that leads to blastproof alloy.[6]

  1. Make Kanthal Dust by mixing stainless steel, aluminium and chromium dust, smelt it into a Kanthal Hot Ingot in the Electric Blast Furnace, then cool it in the Vacuum Freezer to get a Kanthal Ingot.[6][31]
  2. Turn the Kanthal Ingot into fine wire, then cable, then a Kanthal Coil. Kanthal Coils let the blast furnace run at a much higher temperature, so more recipes work. You switch the coils in the furnace's GUI.[6]
  3. With those coils you can process raw titanium into a Titanium Hot Ingot. That process needs Manganese Sulfuric Solution. Cool the hot ingot in the Vacuum Freezer to get a Titanium Ingot.[6]
  4. Tungsten runs in parallel. Break tungsten ore for Raw Tungsten, crush it to Tungsten Dust, then break it down to Tungsten Tiny Dust. An Electric Compressor turns that into Tungsten Nugget items, and 9 nuggets make a Tungsten Ingot.[6]
  5. The Packer then combines stainless steel, tungsten and a titanium ingot into a Mixed Blastproof Ingot. For now the Electric Compressor can turn it into a Blastproof Alloy Plate, but the quest text calls that very inefficient. The Implosion Compressor gets more efficient Mixed Blastproof Alloy Ingots.[6]

Watch out: The tungsten recipes in Immersive Engineering (arc furnace, crusher and hammer crushing) and the Industrial Foregoing laser drill recipe for raw tungsten are flagged as changed by the pack. Don't assume mod defaults for tungsten, and check REI in game.[15][31]

Turbo hull and bigger machines

The quest "More Advanced Components" quest asks for an Advanced Pump and an Advanced Motor. It leads to a quest in "Digital Age", which wants a Turbo Machine Hull. Several quests unlock from that hull:[6]

  • The Distillation Tower, the upgraded Distillery. It gives multiple outputs for one input, and crude oil needs a height of 3 blocks.[6]
  • The Air Intake, which makes Liquid Air in a Vacuum Freezer. Centrifuging it gives oxygen, nitrogen and argon.[6]
  • The Heat Exchanger, a multiblock that produces a very large amount of steam.[6]
  • The Turbo Upgrade, which adds 64 EU/t of capacity per upgrade.[6]
  • The Processing Array, a multiblock that simulates machines running in parallel.[6]

Processing units and the nuclear branch

Argon is used to make Monocrystalline Silicon, and one piece cuts into 32 Silicon Wafer items. In the quest book, the Processing Unit quest a quest in "Digital Age" unlocks after three quests: a quest in "Digital Age", which has tasks for the Memory Management Unit and the Arithmetic Logic Unit; a quest in "Digital Age", which has a task for the Random Access Memory; and a quest in "Digital Age", which has a task for the Processing Unit Board. The pack's Assembler recipe for the Processing Unit:[6][31]

Processing UnitMod recipe

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/circuit/craft/processing_unit

The Processing Unit opens the quest for the Highly Advanced Machine Hull. Together with titanium and the earlier components it also leads to the Large Advanced Motor and Large Advanced Pump.[6]

The Nuclear Reactor quest comes after the Cadmium Control Rod, which in turn follows the Nuclear Alloy Plate, itself a follow-up to the Implosion Compressor quest. The reactor is used to make deuterium and tritium, and the quest text says any reactor size smaller than a large one is not recommended. From there you centrifuge uranium dust, work through uranium and MOX fuel rods, and recycle depleted rods into plutonium.[6]

Beyond the Digital Age

The mod's in-game guide also describes a Quantum tier. It includes the Quantum Upgrade, and the Quantum Barrel can hold 2,147,483,647 stacks of a single item.[33]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization connects to the rest of the pack mainly through the Extended Industrialization add-on, which builds extra machines out of its parts, and through a few recipes the pack adds of its own that bridge it to other mods. Everything below comes from recipes and quests in the pack.[31]

Extended Industrialization machines

Extended Industrialization adds machines such as the Bronze Bending Machine, Steel Alloy Smelter, Electric Brewery and Electric Canning Machine. They are built from Modern Industrialization parts, and each one has both a crafting-table recipe and an Assembler recipe.[31]

The bending machine has a tier path: the Bronze Bending Machine upgrades into the Steel Bending Machine with a Steel Upgrade, and the Unpacker can reverse it. The recipe is shown below.[31]

Tip: The pack changed the recipes for the Bronze Bending Machine and for Steel Plated Bricks. The recipe blocks on this page show the in-pack versions, so trust those over any wiki that shows the mod defaults. The sources don't say what exactly was changed.[31]

The Digital Age questline introduces the Extended Industrialization Processing Array. It's a multiblock that simulates machines running in parallel. You build it from Modern Industrialization casings, pipes and hatches. See a quest in "Digital Age" for the full block list.[6]

Recipes the pack adds

The Bronze Drill has a pack-added quarry recipe that outputs ores from several mods. These are Osmium Ore and Tin Ore from All the Ores, vanilla coal, copper, gold, iron and redstone ores, and Modern Industrialization's own antimony and lignite coal ores. The sources don't show the chances for each ore.[31]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Modern Industrialization?

3 parts

In this pack's quest book, Modern Industrialization shows up in three chapters: Electric Age, Digital Age and The End Game. Digital Age is the biggest, so most of this section follows it.[6][7][8]

Electric Age

"The Electric Age" quest asks for Battery Alloy Ingot and welcomes you to the real beginning of your adventure. Next is a quest in "Electric Age", which asks for a Basic Machine Hull. It explains that hulls control how much power a machine can accept, and that the hull tier also affects which cable can connect to it.[7]

After the hull comes "Basic Components" quest, which wants a Piston, Pump, Motor and Conveyor. Power is covered by a quest in "Electric Age" (LV Steam Turbine) and a quest in "Electric Age" (LV Diesel Generator). "LV Cables" quest covers LV cables, which carry 256 EU/t at most, and "LV-MV Transformers" quest covers the LV to MV Transformer and MV to LV Transformer. There are also quests for the electric versions of familiar machines, such as the Electric Mixer, Electric Wiremill and Electric Packer.[7]

Digital Age

"The Digital Age" quest asks for a Digital Circuit. Three branches open straight after it: a quest in "Digital Age" (tungsten), a quest in "Digital Age" (Kanthal) and "More Advanced Components" quest, which asks for an Advanced Pump and an Advanced Motor. Here are the lines in the order the quests unlock.[6]

The End Game

This chapter has quests for Cryofluid Bucket (freezing argon with helium), Helium 3 Bucket and Carbon Dust, which you get by centrifuging coal. a quest in "The End Game" then asks you to compress carbon dust into a Carbon Plate.[8]

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization has two config files you'll care about here: a server file and a startup file. Here's what this pack sets in them. The pack doesn't change any value that the sources list a mod default for, so the three numeric options below all match the mod's own defaults.[22][25]

Transfer, energy and multiblock size

  • baseItemPipeTransfer is 16, the same as the mod default. It is the base amount of items an item pipe moves every 3 seconds, and it can be set anywhere from 1 to 1,024.[25]
  • forgeEnergyPerEu is 10, the same as the mod default. This is how many Forge Energy units a single EU from the mod is worth, and it can be set from 1 to 1,000.[25]
  • maxDistillationTowerHeight is 9, the same as the mod default. It caps the height of the distillation tower multiblock, and it can be set from 1 to 32.[22]

Generated recipes

Compatibility switches

The pack turns on compat.ae2Integration, compat.almostUnifiedIntegration and compat.ftbQuestsIntegration. Each one only does anything if the other mod is present.[22]

compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat is also true in this pack. That means energy compatibility with NeoForge's energy system works in both directions. The config comment recommends leaving it false unless the other mods have been balanced accordingly, so keep that in mind if you plan to mix power sources.[22]

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Modern Industrialization 2.5.6, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so this section only covers the mod's own release notes.

2.5.6 (the version in this pack)

  • Diesel tool recipes are now gated by aluminum rather than electronic circuits.[34]
  • Steel upgrades were being consumed by machines that do not include "bronze_" in their id. That is fixed.[34]
  • MI pipes could replace Mekanism's bounding blocks, which made Mekanism large machines delete themselves. That is fixed.[34]
  • Creative barrels can be extracted from again.[34]
  • Transformer recipes shown in EMI now match how they work in practice.[34]
  • There is a new config value for the multiblock highlight overlay range, and the multiblock category no longer shows one less block than required.[34]
  • More machine blocks accept redstone control modules by clicking them on, instead of only through the GUI.[34]
  • Smaller fixes: an edge case where a machine slot's adjusted capacity was ignored, tools and the wrench no longer being replaced by the pick action, and a transparent pixel in the Steam Mining Drill texture.[34]

Earlier releases

  • 2.4.2: pipe stats now track insertion and extraction values separately. The caller class of transactions is only included when a config option is true, and it is false by default.[35]
  • 2.4.1: turbines are rotatable again.[36]
  • 2.3.16: the steam quarry got its own distinct texture (the changelog calls it programmer art), and the mod updated to KubeJS 7.2.[37]
  • 2.3.14: fixed an item pipe crash, and fixed EU being left in a hidden buffer when a Diesel Generator runs out of fuel.[38]
  • 2.3.11: fixed the Large Tank controller not invalidating capabilities on formation. Addon developers also gained support for custom hatch types and for an EnergyHatch with a custom namespace.[39]
  • 2.3.10: custom multiblocks can now use a custom CrafterComponent.[40]
