Immersive Engineering is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 12.4.2-194. Retrofuturism, industry and multiblocks! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Immersive Engineering?

2 parts

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machines. Instead of glowing pipes you get hanging power lines. Instead of a single block that spits out dust, you get big multiblock machines with moving parts. This pack includes version 12.4.2-194.[1][2]

The mod's own examples are the Crusher, a 5x3x3 multiblock, and the Excavator, a 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a rotating bucketwheel. It uses the Forge Energy API but works fully standalone. Power moves through cables strung between connectors, not through lines of blocks.[1]

Power generation comes from water wheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. If you ever get lost, the in-game Engineer's Manual is crafted with a book and a lever.[1]

Who it's for

If you like building multiblocks and wiring up a visible power network, this mod is for you. The pack's quest chapter warns you that you'll be making a lot of multiblocks and describes the look as brown, grey and dark grey.[1][3]

Where it fits in your progression

The quest chapter starts with the Engineer's Hammer ("Immersive Engineering" quest). You use it to make plates and dust and to assemble multiblocks. From there the chapter branches into a few early threads.[3]

Tip: Many machines have default input and output sides, and you can change them with the Engineer's Screwdriver. If a machine isn't moving items or fluids the way you expect, check that first.[3]

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

2 parts

Immersive Engineering is a retro-styled tech mod where lots of your machines are multiblocks and power travels along hanging wires. In this pack the quest chapter for the mod starts with the Engineer's Hammer, and the steps below pick out the first quests worth doing. If you want the mod's own documentation, the Engineer's Manual is crafted with a book and a lever.[1][3]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Start with the Engineer's Hammer. The quest chapter begins here, because the hammer makes Plates and Dust and also forms your multiblocks. Quest: "Immersive Engineering" quest.[3]
  2. Build the Coke Oven from Coke Brick. It is a 3x3x3 multiblock, and you finish it by right-clicking the middle block of the front side with the hammer. It turns Logs into Charcoal and Coal or Coal Blocks into Coke, and both jobs also give you Creosote Oil. Quest: "Coke Oven" quest.[3]
  3. Build the Crude Blast Furnace from Blast Brick to make Steel. It is another 3x3x3, formed by right-clicking the front middle block with the hammer. Quest: "Crude Blast Furnace" quest.[3]
  4. Build the Alloy Kiln from Kiln Brick. It is a 2x2x2 of Kiln Bricks, formed by right-clicking the top right block with the hammer. You put two metals in the top slots and a fuel such as Charcoal in the bottom slot. Quest: "Alloy Kiln" quest.[3]
  5. Move on to power. Craft the Engineer's Wire Cutters to snip Plates into Wires, which go into Coils. Quest: "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest.[3]
  6. Connect machines with wire coils. Right-click one part with the coil, then right-click the second part with the same coil, and keep the path between them unobstructed. Quest: "Wire Coils" quest.[3]
  7. Pick up the Engineer's Screwdriver to configure machine inputs and outputs. Quest: "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest.[3]
Tip: The Crude Blast Furnace needs an Iron Ingot plus Charcoal or Coke, and each Steel Ingot takes 60 seconds to bake. Charcoal covers only 15 seconds of that, while Coke covers the full 60.[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering plays differently from most tech mods, and the key ideas are simple. It uses the Forge Energy API, but power doesn't travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. You span actual cables between connectors, so your factory ends up with hanging powerlines. Many of the machines are multiblocks, which are big structures you build from several blocks.[1]

The mod's project page says it can be played fully standalone, and that its in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual, crafted with a book and a lever. When you're unsure how a machine is built, open the manual first. It is the mod's own reference.[1]

Multiblocks

The project page gives two examples of the scale involved. The crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels. The excavator is a 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a big rotating bucketwheel, and it is resource intensive to build.[1]

The mod also tracks you forming a few key machines: the Crude Blast Furnace, the Improved Blast Furnace, the Arc Furnace, the Metal Press and the Diesel Generator. These make good milestones as you progress.[5]

Power

Power generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The mod also has a Kinetic Dynamo and a Diesel Generator. Energy is measured in Flux.[1][5]

The mod can report what your network is doing. Storage blocks show the energy stored out of their capacity in Flux. You can also check the average energy transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between points on a wire. Use these readouts when a line isn't delivering what you expect.[5]

Machine settings and redstone

Several machines have settings you can toggle. Redstone control can be inverted or not, and some blocks can also switch a strong redstone signal on or off. The Bottling Machine can either hold containers until they're full or allow partial filling. Pumps can be set to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone, but the game warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[5]

Watch out: Leave the pump's cobblestone-replacement option off when you're dealing with large amounts of fluid. The mod itself warns that it can cause lag and isn't advisable in that case.[5]

Fluid containers can also refuse certain contents. Some will tell you they can't store gases.[5]

Item handling and automation

The mod has its own logistics tools. The Conveyor Belt comes with Dropping and Extracting variants, and the Extracting Conveyor Belt reports how many items per second it will extract. You also get the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. These cover most of what you need for moving items between machines.[5]

Mineral veins and core samples

Ore generation is tied to mineral veins. You take a core sample with a drill, and it either finds a vein or reports that no minerals were found. If it finds one, it also tells you the vein's integrity. Survey hints point you toward nearby veins. A core sample only works on a map from the same dimension, and only if the sample lies within that map's borders. You can also buy a Mineral Deposit Map from the Structural Engineer villager.[5]

Unverified Pack-specific numbers such as machine energy use, wire transfer rates and vein sizes aren't confirmed here. No config files for this mod were available, so check the in-game Engineer's Manual for exact values.

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

7 parts

Immersive Engineering in this pack follows a quest chapter that starts with the Engineer's Hammer. The Hammer makes plates and dust and builds the multiblocks, and you'll build a lot of them. The path runs roughly like this: steel and alloys, the engineering blocks, tiered power, logistics, then defence and gear.[3]

Step 1: Hammer, wires and logistics basics

The first quests are "Immersive Engineering" quest, "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest and "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest. For power you start with the Engineer's Wire Cutters, which snips plates into wires that go into coils. Machines have default inputs and outputs, and you reconfigure them with the Engineer's Screwdriver.[3]

Step 2: Bricks, coke, alloys and steel

Three early multiblocks all branch off the first quest. The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 of Coke Brick. It turns logs into charcoal and coal into coke, and both runs also give creosote oil. The Alloy Kiln is a 2x2x2 of Kiln Brick. You finish it by right-clicking the top right block with the Hammer.[3]

The Crude Blast Furnace is your first steel source. It's a 3x3x3 of Blast Brick, and you right-click the front middle block with the Hammer. It takes an iron ingot plus charcoal or coke. Each steel ingot takes 60 seconds to bake. Charcoal covers 15 seconds of that and coke covers the full 60. The block forms of both fuels multiply this.[3]

The pack also changes how Kiln Bricks are made. There is a Create Additions item-application recipe that puts a brick onto a sandstone block. The same kind of recipe applies to Reinforced Blast Brick, which is made by applying a steel plate to a Blast Brick.[4]

Step 3: Engineering blocks and the bigger machines

The engineering blocks gate most machines. The Redstone Engineering Block is the simplest one. Iron and redstone come from normal gameplay, and the only hard part is iron sheetmetal. The Light Engineering Block needs 1 copper ingot, 4 iron sheetmetal and 4 iron mechanical components.[3]

The "Squeezer" quest, "Assembler" quest and "Mixer" quest quests all unlock after you have both the Redstone and Light Engineering Blocks. The Squeezer presses plant oil out of seeds. It can also make HOP graphite dust from 8 coke dust.[3]

Step 4: Power tiers

Power comes in three voltage tiers: low (LV), medium (MV) and high (HV). Higher voltage moves and uses more energy, and some machines need a higher tier. The "Tiered Voltage" quest quest points you to LV Wire Coil, MV Wire Coil and HV Wire Coil. Moving between voltages needs Transformers.[3]

The pack has connector recipes for each tier. LV Wire Connector, MV Wire Connector and HV Wire Connector each have their own recipe. So do the matching accumulators: LV Accumulator, MV Accumulator and HV Accumulator.[4]

There are three generator quests. The Kinetic Dynamo turns a water wheel or windmill into energy and has no internal storage. The Thermoelectric Generator makes more energy the bigger the temperature difference between its sides. The "Lightning Coil" quest is a multiblock that stores energy from lightning strikes on steel fences.[3]

Step 5: Logistics and storage

The logistics quests start with Conveyor Belt for items and Fluid Pipe for fluids. Covered belts are crafted with steel scaffolding. The pack has crafting recipes for the splitting, dropping and extracting belts. The extracting belt pulls items out of inventories.[3][4]

For storage, the Wooden Storage Crate has 27 slots, and the Reinforced Storage Crate works the same but can't be blown up. The Wooden Barrel and Metal Barrel both hold 12 buckets. Wooden barrels only take cold and room-temperature fluids, while metal ones also take warm fluids and gases.[3]

Step 6: Small machines

The "Small Machines" quest quest is built around Treated Wood Planks. In this pack you can make it by filling planks with creosote in a Create spout. The quests after it cover the Garden Cloche, Electromagnet, Turntable, Charging Station and External Heater.[3][4]

The External Heater powers vanilla-style furnaces but not the Crude Blast Furnace. It also goes into the recipe for the Blast Furnace Preheater, which the quest says is technically tied to the Improved Blast Furnace.[3][4]

Step 7: Defence, gear and blueprints

The defence quests cover Razor Wire, the Tesla Coil, the Gun Turret and the Chemthrower Turret. The Gun Turret uses the same ammo as the Revolver, including specialty projectiles. The Chemthrower Turret can only be filled through pipes, not buckets. The Faraday armor set ("Faraday Armor" quest) makes you immune to wires and Tesla Coils but isn't built for combat.[3][6]

Ammo and other advanced crafts go through the Engineer's Blueprint. The pack has separate blueprint crafting recipes for components, molds, bullets, banner patterns and warning signs.[4]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

3 parts

The pack rewires several Immersive Engineering recipes so they connect with other mods. Every recipe below is flagged as changed by the pack, so don't assume the standalone mod behaves the same way.[4]

Plates and metal blocks use the alltheores items

In this pack the plates you make with the Engineer's Hammer are the alltheores versions, such as Iron Plate, Copper Plate, Gold Plate and Steel Plate. The same goes for aluminum, constantan, electrum, lead, nickel, silver and uranium.[4]

The early quests lean on this. "Immersive Engineering" quest says the hammer makes plates, and "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest has you snip plates into wires with the Engineer's Wire Cutters before putting them into coils.[3]

Immersive Engineering's metal storage slabs, like Steel Slab and Lead Slab, have matching alltheores blocks in this pack, such as Steel Block and Lead Block. This covers aluminum, constantan, electrum, lead, nickel, silver, steel and uranium.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Immersive Engineering?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it follows the mod's natural progression: tools first, then power, logistics and machines. Here is how it fits together, based on the quest data I could see.[3]

Where the chapter starts

The chapter opens with "Immersive Engineering" quest, which asks for the Engineer's Hammer. The Hammer makes plates and dust, and it is also what builds the mod's multiblocks. Three other quests show no prerequisite, so they work as extra entry points: "Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest (the Engineer's Screwdriver), "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest (the Engineer's Wire Cutters) and "Small Machines" quest (treated wood planks).[3]

Hammer branch: your first multiblocks

All five of these come right after the main chapter quest. Once you have both engineering blocks, the bigger machines unlock: "Squeezer" quest, "Assembler" quest, "Mixer" quest and "Crusher" quest. Each of them requires both "Light Engineering Block" quest and "Redstone Engineering Block" quest first.[3]

Power branch

After "Immersive Engineering Power!" quest, the next quest is "Wire Coils" quest. It accepts any one of the LV, MV or HV wire coils. From there, "Tiered Voltage" quest asks for all three coil types, and "Transformers" quest asks for a Transformer or an HV Transformer.[3]

Power generation also hangs off the same starting quest. You get "Energy from Temperature" quest (the Thermoelectric Generator), "Energy from moving things!" quest (the Kinetic Dynamo) and "Lightning Coil" quest. The Lightning Coil quest wants several building materials, including HV and copper coil blocks, and it ends with a HV Accumulator. The Dynamo quest leads on to a follow-up that asks for the Water Wheel.[3]

Logistics branch

"Immersive Engineering Logistics" quest splits into four follow-ups: "Moving Fluids" quest, "Storing Items" quest, "Moving Items" quest and "Storing Fluids" quest.[3]

Small Machines and defence

"Small Machines" quest opens a set of single-block machine quests. They are the External Heater, the Garden Cloche, the Electromagnet, the Turntable and the Charging Station. Several of these have no title in the quest data.[3]

A separate group sits behind a quest called "Offense and Defense". It asks for the Gun Turret, the Chemthrower Turret, the Tesla Coil and Razor Wire.[3]

Unverified The chapter data I received was cut off, so more Immersive Engineering quests exist that are not covered here (for example the projectile, blueprint, drill, Skyhook and Faraday armor quests). A second chapter called "Basic Armor" was also listed, but its contents were not available, so I can't say how it connects to this mod.

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Immersive Engineering 12.4.2-194, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. The notes below come from that build's own changelog, so this is what that version of the mod brought with it.[2][7]

New in 12.4.2-194

  • The item router can now filter by mod as well as by tags.[7]
  • Cloche recipes can have an optional "fluid" element. If a recipe doesn't specify one, it uses water. Crimson and warped fungi are now grown with lava.[7]
  • A new item hatch lets you pull a single stack from an inventory.[7]

Changes

  • Extracting conveyors now have a configurable stack size instead of a configurable tick rate. Existing conveyors need to be adjusted again.[7]
  • The storage shelf has new insertion logic. It tries to fill slots that already hold the same item, and otherwise places the item in the slots right after it. This keeps the individual crates on the shelf more organized, and it works for both shift-clicking and automatic insertion.[7]
  • Illager loot tables changed. Fusiliers and bulwarks now respect looting, and commandos no longer drop emeralds.[7]
Watch out: If you have extracting conveyors set up from an earlier version, check them. They now use a stack size setting instead of a tick rate, so they need adjusting again.[7]

Fixes

  • The mixer no longer accidentally crafts a lingering awkward potion.[7]
  • Catwalks now work properly when you use a hammer on them.[7]
  • Shift-click behavior in the Engineer's Crafting Table is fixed.[7]
  • Chutes now accept item input from the side.[7]
  • Engineer illagers now drop their raid banner.[7]
  • Shelves no longer crash the game when accessed from unexpected sides.[7]
  • Windows used in multiblocks are less directionally dependent.[7]
  • The backpack antenna now visually disconnects from wires.[7]

This build also added or updated the zh_cn translation.[7]
