Occultism is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 1.224.4. A ritual magic system centered around summonable spirits allows you to automate various tasks, store vast amounts of items, let demons mine in void dimensions, create powerful enchanted tools and jewelry, get support from familiars, and much much more. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Occultism?

3 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, also called demons, from "The Other Place". Once you get going, you can use them to automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine in void dimensions, craft powerful enchanted tools and jewelry, and get support from familiars. This pack ships Occultism 1.224.4.[1][2]

Getting started

Break grass until you drop Demon's Dream Seeds, then craft the seeds with a book to get the Dictionary Of Spirits. That book is the mod's in-game guide, so follow it. The pack's quest "Dreaming of Demons" quest walks you through the same first steps.[1][3]

Eating the Demon's Dream gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect, which lets you see into the Otherworld. You need that vision to harvest certain Otherworld items needed for progression. The dictionary also has a quest-style guide, and you will need the book to craft several things in the pack, so don't skip it.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

This is a Skyblock pack, so the usual route to Iesnium Ore through the Nether is replaced. The quest book suggests using an Atomic Reconstructor on Ancient Debris. From there you can make an Iesnium Pickaxe, which mines Iesnium like the Infused Pickaxe but lasts a lot longer.[3]

After that comes demon mining. You build a Dimensional Mineshaft and place a Mining Demon confined to a lamp inside it. Higher tiers work faster and have a better chance of mining Iesnium for you. The mineshaft does not export on its own and voids items over its storage limit, so pull items out with hoppers, Transporting Demons or item pipes.[3]

Spiritfire is the other early pillar. It converts Overworld materials into Otherworld ones, such as Andesite into Otherstone and Diamonds into Spirit Attuned Gem. It also purifies chalk and black dye into Purified Ink for your first Book of Binding: Foliot. Those materials feed the ritual quests, such as "Preparing for a Ritual: Chalk" quest and "Books of Binding" quest.[3]

ATM Star path and armor trims

Several early Occultism quests are on the ATM Star path list: "Dreaming of Demons" quest, "Demon Fruit" quest, "Little Book o' Demons" quest, "Spiritfire Conversions" quest, "Books of Binding" quest and "Preparing for a Ritual: Chalk" quest.[3]

Unverified The ATM Star list for the Occultism chapter was cut off in the data I have, so I can't confirm whether later quests, such as the Iesnium or demon mining ones, are also on it.

Occultism also offers a way to get Armor Trims from various Possessed and Wild Mobs. The Basic Armor chapter has a quest that accepts either the Dictionary of Spirits or a random armor trim from Ex Deorum.[4]

How do you get started with Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism is all about summoning demons to do your work. In this pack the Occultism quest chapter walks you through it in a sensible order, so here is that order and the reason for each step. Keep in mind that some quest advice only holds early on: it gives the number of bowls you need as a "for now" figure that grows with later rituals.[1][3]

Seeds and the Dictionary

To get started, the first quest asks you to break grass until you get Demon's Dream Seeds. That is "Dreaming of Demons" quest.[1][3]

Next, craft the Dictionary Of Spirits. It is the mod's guide book, and the quest says the pack also needs it to craft several other things, so you can't skip it. The quest is "Little Book o' Demons" quest.[3]

Third Eye and Iesnium

Eating a Demon's Dream gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect, which lets you see otherworld items you need for progression. Or you can set the fruit on fire and skip finding most of them. See "Demon Fruit" quest.[3]

This is a skyblock pack, so the quest says the usual trip to the Nether for Iesnium Ore is not how you get it here. The pack adds a laser recipe that turns Ancient Debris into Iesnium Ore, and the quest suggests trying an Atomic Reconstructor on Ancient Debris.[3][5]

Once you have gathered a few Raw Iesnium Ores, the quest says you will probably want to use the first few ingots for an Iesnium Pickaxe. It mines Iesnium like the Infused Pickaxe but lasts a lot longer. Quests: "Iesnium: Ore of the Otherworld" quest and "The Otherworld Pickaxe" quest.[3]

Summon your first demon

The first ritual, "Our First Ritual" quest, summons a Foliot Crusher. It crushes items for you, and the quest says you'll need that for some of the higher-level chalks.[3]

  1. Combine your unbound book with the Dictionary of Spirits in a crafting grid. This binds a demon to it and gives you Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound).[3]
  2. Open the Dictionary, go to the Pentacles tab and pick Aviar's Circle. The eye icon in the corner of the image builds an outline of the ritual in the world.[3]
  3. Once the multi-block ritual is built, place 4 sacrificial bowls (or more for future rituals) within an 8 block horizontal radius of the center bowl, and use the required items on them.[3]
  4. Put the bound book in the golden bowl and the ritual starts.[3]
Tip: If the guide's pages stay locked, the quest mentions a Mark All As Read option that unlocks everything in the book.[3]

How does Occultism work?

4 parts

Occultism doesn't use power cables, fluid pipes or energy. Its systems run on rituals and spirits: you summon demons, bind them into books, and put them to work. This section covers what the sources confirm about how that works in the pack. The mod describes itself as a ritual magic system built around summonable spirits that can automate tasks, store large amounts of items and mine in void dimensions.[1]

Rituals and the central bowl

Rituals are built as a pentacle, and the pentacle needs a central bowl. The tooltips on the golden and iesnium sacrificial bowls, their dark variants, the eldritch chalice and the celestial chalice all say the same thing: use exactly one of these in the pentacle. Don't put two central bowls in one setup.[6]

Otherglass is a placeable block that you can only see while wearing Otherworld Goggles. Keep that in mind if you build with it and can't find it again.[6]

Spirit automation with Books of Calling

Spirits are put to work through Books of Calling. In this pack, each one is crafted from a bound Book of Binding plus one extra item. The pack has Foliot books for the Janitor, Farmer, Lumberjack and Transporter jobs, plus a Djinni Machine Operator. You can also craft a Book of Calling back into its bound Book of Binding, either Foliot or Djinni.[5]

Miners and the dimensional mineshaft

The guide describes the Foliot miner as a source of stone and ores and the Marid miner as a rare resources miner. Demons also mine in void dimensions through the dimensional mineshaft.[1][6]

The mineshaft throws away any item it can't store. Empty it regularly, either by hand, with hoppers, or with a transporter spirit. Its sides behave differently when you automate it:[6]

  • The top connects to the lamp slot.[6]
  • The bottom connects to the ore slots.[6]
  • Every other side connects to all slots.[6]
Watch out: Don't let the dimensional mineshaft fill up. Whatever it can't store is discarded, so an unattended mineshaft loses items.[6]

Storage and other gear

The stable wormhole blocks link to a storage actuator. Their tooltips show either the linked position or a note that the block isn't linked yet, so you can check a link at a glance.[6]

The guide's one-line descriptions for the rest of the machinery are brief. The storage remote is "Everything in your hands", the ender satchel is a portable ender chest, and the dimensional battlefield is a spiritual mob killing simulator. The soul gem is a magic mob imprisonment tool.[6]

Reinforced deepslate works differently from other rituals. It's forged by Wild Spirits, who aren't bound to the finished item. You sacrifice the items and the Wild Spirits forge it for you.[6]

Unverified Exact numbers for the dimensional machines, such as storage capacities, miner speeds, fuel and redstone behavior, are not shown in the sources here, and no Occultism config files for the pack were available. Check the Dictionary of Spirits in-game for those details.

How do you progress through Occultism?

7 parts

In this pack, Occultism is a long quest chapter. The quests take you from a handful of seeds to demon-powered mining, the chalk colours and a dimensional storage system. Following the quests in order is the intended route, and each section below tracks what they ask of you.[3]

Tier 0: Seeds, fruit and the guide book

It starts with "Dreaming of Demons" quest, which asks you to break some grass to get Demon's Dream Seeds. The next quest, "Demon Fruit" quest, says that eating the resulting Demon's Dream gives you a chance at the Third Eye effect, which lets you see the Otherworld. It adds that you will need this vision to find certain items for progression.[3]

Then make the Dictionary Of Spirits in "Little Book o' Demons" quest. The quest describes it as the guide book for Occultism, with a quest-style guide inside, and says you also need it to craft several things in the pack.[3]

Otherworld materials

"Spiritfire Conversions" quest says you can convert Overworld materials into Otherworld ones by throwing them into Spiritfire. Andesite converts to Otherstone, and Diamonds convert to Spirit Attuned Gem, which the quest says is used in several recipes you will need later. Oak Saplings convert to Otherworld saplings, and the quest says you need the Third Eye to harvest the Otherworld logs.[3]

The Divination Rod can locate these materials once you attune it to one. The quest on Otherworld Goggles says they give you the Third Eye effect without eating fruit, even when equipped in a Curios slot.[3]

Iesnium and demon mining

The quest "Iesnium: Ore of the Otherworld" quest says this is a skyblock pack, so you don't go spelunking in the Nether for Iesnium. It suggests using an Atomic Reconstructor on Ancient Debris, and the pack adds a laser recipe that turns Ancient Debris into Iesnium Ore.[3][5]

"Demon Mining" quest has you build a Dimensional Mineshaft. The quest says you also need a Mining Demon confined to a lamp, placed inside it. It says any tier completes the quest, while higher tiers work faster and have a higher chance of mining Iesnium. According to the quest, the Mineshaft does not auto-export, so you extract items with Hoppers, Transporting Demons or something like Item Pipes, and it voids any items over its storage limit.[3]

Ritual (occultism)

Recipe id: occultism:ritual/craft_dimensional_mineshaft

Ritual basics

Before your first ritual, the quests have you prepare four things: chalk, bowls, candles and a Book of Binding.[3]

In "Our First Ritual" quest you summon a Foliot Crusher Demon with Aviar's Circle. The quest says to place your extra Sacrificial Bowls within an 8 block horizontal radius of the center bowl, then put the Bound Book in the Golden Sacrificial Bowl to start the ritual. It says the Foliot crushes items, which you need for some of the higher level chalks.[3]

Chalk progression

In the quest book, most chalk colours are tied to a particular ritual or to a drop from a summoned demon, so the chalk quests work as a tier ladder.[3]

  • "Chalking It Up" quest has you ask your Foliot to crush End Stone, Obsidian and Calcite for new chalk. Its tasks are the yellow, purple and light gray impure chalks.[3]
  • Green chalk uses Nature Paste and lime chalk uses Research Fragment Dust. Both quests place these under Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion, and the goggles and first satchel quests also follow that ritual.[3]
  • Gray chalk uses Gray Paste from Strigeor's Higher Binding. The Soul Gem quest follows the same ritual.[3]
  • Orange chalk needs Cursed Honey, which the quest says is dropped by a Possessed Bee from Ihagan's Enthrallment.[3]
  • Red chalk needs Afrit Essence, from an Afrit summoned in Kandar's Opened Conjure. The quest says that without Red Chalk you can only summon an Unbound Afrit, which cannot be controlled and will be violent.[3]
  • Pink chalk uses Demonic Meat, which the quest says is dropped by Demon Possessed Zombified Piglins.[3]
  • Black chalk uses Witherite Dust from Sevira's Permanent Confinement, which the quest calls the third tier of Infusion Rituals.[3]
  • Blue chalk uses Marid Essence, dropped by the Unbound Marid you summon with Tibira's Attraction.[3]

Ritual helpers

The quest on the Apprentice Ritual Satchel says you can fill it with the chalks, candles, skulls and crystals for a ritual, and that it slowly places the runes automatically. It says the enchantment glint disappears when a chalk inside falls under 40% durability. The quest for the Artisanal Ritual Satchel says you can make it after Sevira's Permanent Confinement, and that it instantly places everything. You can right-click a Golden Bowl with it to erase the chalk runes and collect the other items, but it does not restore chalk durability.[3]

Dimensional storage

"Demonic Magical Storage!" quest introduces the Dimensional Storage Actuator. The quest says it acts like a Shulker Box, so it keeps its items when broken. By default it has 128 storage slots, each holding up to 16 stacks of an item, and the quest says items with NBT data don't stack and take up a whole slot.[3]

The pack changed the ritual recipe for the Dimensional Crystal Matrix, so use the one below rather than any default you remember.[5]

To store more, "Upgrading Our Magical Storage" quest has you make Storage Stabilizers. The quest says they must point directly at the Matrix, not the base, from up to 5 blocks away with a clear line of sight. If you break one, the items inside are not destroyed, but you cannot add more items until it is replaced or upgraded. The quest accepts five stabilizer tiers, plus dark variants.[3]

"Remote Access" quest covers remote access. The Stable Wormhole can be placed to act as another storage location, and the Storage Accessor acts as a wireless remote that the quest says can work across dimensions. Per the quest, you shift-click a Storage Actuator to link either one.[3]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

5 parts

Occultism doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. Its items show up in recipes with Ars Nouveau, Dyenamics, Productive Bees, Draconic Evolution and the All the Mods mods. Here's where those connections are, based on the in-pack recipes and quests.[5]

Ars Nouveau (via Ars Ocultas)

This is the biggest crossover. The Spirit Attuned Gem can be made in an Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus. That recipe uses Ars Nouveau essences and a Source Gem together with Demon's Dream Essence. It's the mod's own recipe, not one the pack changed.[5]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem

You can also get Spirit Attuned Gems the Occultism way. The Spiritfire Conversions quest says that diamonds thrown into Spiritfire turn into them, and you'll need them in several later recipes.[3]

The Sacrificial Altar is an Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus recipe that the pack has changed. It mixes Ars Nouveau parts with the Occultism Golden Ritual Bowl.[5]

Dyenamics

Custom rituals

The pack adds Occultism rituals whose results come from other mods. One makes vanilla Honeycomb. It uses a bound Foliot book, which is your Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound), and also takes a Productive Bees nest tag.[5]

Getting Iesnium in a skyblock

The Iesnium quest sends you outside Occultism for this one. Because the pack is a skyblock, you don't go spelunking in the Nether. Instead, the quest suggests using an Atomic Reconstructor on Ancient Debris to get Iesnium Ore.[3]

Tip: The Spirit Attuned Gem is the link between Occultism and Ars Nouveau. Get it early, because it's used in the Imbuement metal conversions and in several later Occultism recipes.[3][5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Occultism?

6 parts

The pack has a dedicated Occultism quest chapter that starts with your first seeds and runs on to the endgame rituals. Some quests unlock after quests that are not shown in the chapter listing here, so only the prerequisites that are listed are mentioned below.[3]

Getting started

  1. "Dreaming of Demons" quest is the first quest in the chapter. It asks for Demon's Dream Seeds, and the quest says you get them by breaking grass.[3]
  2. "Demon Fruit" quest comes after it and asks for Demon's Dream. The quest says eating one gives you a chance of the Third Eye effect, which lets you see Otherworld items.[3]
  3. "Little Book o' Demons" quest also comes after the first quest. It asks for the Dictionary Of Spirits, which the quest calls the guide book for the mod. The quest says you also need the book to craft several things in the pack.[3]

Iesnium and Otherworld materials

Preparing for your first ritual

Four preparation quests all come after an earlier quest called "The Basics of Rituals": "Books of Binding" quest (Purified Ink and a Book of Binding: Foliot), "Preparing for a Ritual: Chalk" quest (white chalk and the Chalk Brush), "Preparing for a Ritual: Bowls" quest and "Tools of the Trade: Butcher's Knife" quest. The Butcher Knife quest is followed by "Preparing for a Ritual: Candles" quest, which covers candles and Spirit Attuned Crystal.[3]

"Our First Ritual" quest comes after those four preparation quests. It uses Aviar's Circle to summon a Foliot Crusher Demon, with a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound). The quest says to place 4 (or more for future rituals) Sacrificial Bowls within an 8 block horizontal radius of the center bowl. The bowls quest adds that four are enough for now, and that later rituals need upwards of ten bowls each.[3]

Chalk, storage and tools

The chalk ladder

Most of the rest of the chapter is one quest per chalk color, each tied to a ritual or demon named in the quest text. Green ("Green Chalk" quest) and Lime ("Lime Chalk" quest) both come after Eziveus' Spectral Compulsion. Gray ("Gray Chalk" quest) is tied to Strigeor's Higher Binding, and Orange ("Orange Chalk" quest) to Ihagan's Enthrallment.[3]

"Kandar's Opened Conjure" quest comes after the Gray and Orange chalk quests and the Iesnium ore quest. Because Red Chalk is not available yet at that point, the quest says all you can summon is an Unbound Afrit. "Red Chalk" quest follows it and asks for Afrit Essence. The quest says that ritual needs a live Cow as the sacrifice.[3]

"Sevira's Permanent Confinement" quest comes after Red Chalk and is described as the third tier of Infusion Rituals. "Black Chalk" quest (with Witherite Dust), "Tools of the Trade: Artisanal Ritual Satchel" quest and "Iesnium Ritual Bowl" quest all come after it. The Artisanal Satchel quest says that satchel instantly places the ritual items. The Iesnium Ritual Bowl quest says it cuts ritual time to one fourth of the original when used in place of a Golden Ritual Bowl.[3]

"Blue Chalk" quest (Blue Chalk) comes after Tibira's Attraction, which summons the Unbound Marid Demon. After Blue Chalk come "Fatma's Incentivized Attraction" quest, which summons a Marid Crusher, and "Uphyxes' Inverted Tower" quest, described as the maximum tier of Infusion Rituals. Cyan Chalk ("Cyan Chalk" quest) comes after Fatma's quest, and the Iesnium Anvil (a quest in "Occultism") comes after Uphyxes' quest.[3]

"Light Blue Chalk" quest comes after Fatma's quest and Ophyx' Calling. "&#AD00C8Magenta Chalk" quest comes after both Uphyxes' and Fatma's quests. "&#4E2C00Brown Chalk" quest comes after Xeovrenth Adjure, and Pink Chalk ("Pink Chalk" quest) after Odus' Open Convocation.[3]

Endgame

"Ronaza's Contact" quest comes after the Magenta, Brown, Cyan, Pink and Light Blue chalk quests and asks for every colored and foundation chalk. The quest calls it the ultimate ritual and says it has limited uses. "Eldritch Chalice" quest follows it, together with the Iesnium Ritual Bowl quest, and asks for a Celestial Chalice or an Eldritch Chalice.[3]

What changed in Occultism between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Occultism 1.224.4, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for Occultism, so everything below comes from the mod's own release notes. These are the releases I have notes for, not every version in between.[2]

Notable Occultism releases

  • 1.224.4 (the version in this pack): a bug fix for ritual names in HUDs.[2][7]
  • 1.205.0: optimisation patches, plus new translation updates from Crowdin.[8]
  • 1.197.0: the Farmer Spirit was added, along with other fixes in the same update.[9]
  • 1.193.0: new IE and Create sawing recipes.[10]
  • 1.191.0: another round of Crowdin translation updates.[11]
  • 1.190.0: more items moved to the new style, and new ways to get prismarine and corals. It also brought a Chinese localization update and more Crowdin translations.[12]
  • 1.189.0: new item and block textures by Aldahel, and a fix for the 3D divination rod model's search animation not working. The mod's build also switched from NeoGradle to MDG.[13]

The pack runs 1.224.4, which is newer than every other release listed here. The notes I have don't say whether the pack changed any Occultism values or recipes, so check the in-game recipe pages for anything you plan to rely on.[2][7]
