What is Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is a standalone tech mod where the ultimate objective is total automation. It's inspired by GregTech, but it drops the tedious parts: there's no pile of crafting tools to keep remaking, and it has a very powerful pipe system so you can automate early. Instead of ten tiers of every machine, it uses an overclock system. This pack includes version 2.3.10.[1][2]

It's for you if you enjoy planning factories and balancing production lines. It's also resource-hungry, but you get a quarry early on that can remove your need for mining if you automate it.[1]

Tip: Make sure you have EMI, JEI or REI to look up recipes in-game. Jade is optional, but it helps a lot.[1]

How progression works

The mod splits into two stages. In the Steam Age you build your first factories, and the challenge is resource management and processing time. Most of those setups become obsolete once you finish it, so don't over-invest in them. The Electric Age is where you automate every processing line, and those setups are meant to be permanent because you can keep upgrading them. The overclock system lets production adapt to your consumption.[3]

You start by making a Forge Hammer for basic processing, then move on to bronze machines and a Steam Mining Drill.[4]

Where it sits in this pack

The pack's steam_age quest chapter walks you through the early game. It begins with the Forge Hammer (a quest in "?"), then four Bronze Machine Casing (a quest in "?") and a Bronze Boiler (a quest in "?"). From there it covers the Coke Oven, the Steam Blast Furnace (a quest in "?") and steel machines. It also covers the Steam Quarry (a quest in "?"), and it ends with the Analog Circuit (a quest in "?").[5]

Later quests, in the rust_free_and_oiled chapter, ask for the Electric Quarry (a quest in "?") and the Advanced Machine Hull (a quest in "?").[6]

Watch out: The mod's own guide strongly discourages using it alongside an on-demand automation mod like AE2 or Refined Storage. Electric machines reach their full power when they run continuously, and on-demand systems make your progress extremely slow and inefficient.[3]

How do you get started with Modern Industrialization?

2 parts

Modern Industrialization is all about automation, and it starts in the Steam Age. There you build early factories that produce what you need for the Electric Age. Here is the order I'd go in, following the pack's steam_age quest chapter.[3][5]

Tip: Most Steam Age setups become obsolete once you reach the Electric Age, so don't over-invest in them. The mod's own guide also strongly discourages mixing it with on-demand storage mods like AE2 or Refined Storage, because that makes progress slow and inefficient.[3]

Step by step

  1. Craft the Forge Hammer. It is the first quest in the chapter (a quest in "?") and handles basic processing. Put iron, copper or tin ore in it and you get 2 raw ores per ore. A Hammer tool raises that ratio and unlocks more recipes, at the cost of some durability.[4][5][7]
  2. Make your first bronze. Hammer copper and tin ingots into dusts in the Forge Hammer, combine them into bronze dust, then smelt it into a bronze ingot. A Mixer does this more efficiently. Remember that 9 tiny dusts make one dust.[8]
  3. Build your steam basics: Bronze Machine Casing (a quest in "?"), then the Bronze Boiler (a quest in "?"), the Bronze Water Pump (a quest in "?") and the Bronze Compressor (a quest in "?"). The quests unlock in that order.[5]
  4. Build the Coke Oven to start steel production. Its quest (a quest in "?") also asks for bronze item and fluid input and output hatches. The next quest is Coke Dust (a quest in "?"), which you get by macerating coke.[5][7][9]
  5. Make steel. Coke Dust combined with iron gives Uncooked Steel Dust, which you turn into steel in the Steam Blast Furnace. Using a Mixer gives a better ratio, so the Bronze Mixer is worth having too.[5][9]
  6. Make Rubber Sheet. Mix Coke Dust with water in a mixer to get Raw Synthetic Oil, burn that in the Steam Blast Furnace to get Synthetic Oil, then mix it with paper. The guide strongly recommends automating this. Paper can be made from wood using wood pulp.[5][10]
Tip: If you don't want to hunt for Silk Touch pickaxes, the Steam Mining Drill mines 3x3 blocks and has Silk Touch built in, which pairs well with the Forge Hammer. It needs water (right-click a water source with it) and solid fuel such as coal, which you add by right-clicking the fuel onto it in your inventory.[4]

Steel tier and your first circuit

After the first steel, the quests open up the steel machines such as the Steel Furnace, Steel Macerator, Steel Mixer and Steel Wiremill, plus the Steam Quarry. The goal of the chapter is the Analog Circuit (a quest in "?"), which the mod describes as the start of the Electric Age. The Wiremill makes the wires you need on the way, and the circuit board quest (a quest in "?") comes right after your first rubber sheet.[5][7][10]

The Analog Circuit itself is also an Assembler recipe.

Once you have Analog Circuits, the guide strongly suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts in Assemblers. That makes crafting electric machines basically free.[12]

How does Modern Industrialization work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Modern Industrialization is all about automation. The mod splits progression into the Steam Age, where you build early factories and manage resources, and the Electric Age, where your setups are meant to be permanent and keep getting upgraded. This section covers how the machines, multiblocks, power and pipes actually work.[3]

Steam machines

A boiler automatically makes steam and sends it to adjacent machines, up to 8 millibuckets per tick. Bronze machines handle recipes up to 2 EU/t, and 1 mb of steam equals 1 EU. That means a boiler at max temperature can power 4 bronze machines at once.[13]

Steam machines accept items, steam and other fluids from any side. You can lock slots from the interface so they only take one type of item or fluid. Every machine has an output side with optional auto-eject, and hoppers or pipes can still pull outputs from any side. A wrench rotates a machine, but breaking it with the wrench won't drop it, so use a pickaxe.[13]

Steel machines handle recipes up to 4 EU/t and run twice as fast as long as their energy use stays within that limit. A multiblock with at least one steel hatch is upgraded to steel tier as well.[14]

Multiblocks and hatches

Every multiblock has a controller, and you usually can't use the controller directly. All input and output goes through hatches. Forget a required hatch and the machine won't start. Hold a Wrench to see missing blocks and errors, or hold a hatch to see where it can go. The Coke Oven guide page explains how multiblocks work if it is your first one. It needs 21 bricks plus 3 hatches, because the hatches count toward the 24 blocks of the structure.[15][16]

The Large Tank stores 64 buckets of fluid for every block in the structure, including the sides. Only pipes can access it, either through the controller or a Large Tank Hatch. Don't break the controller, or you lose everything stored inside.[17]

The Distillation Tower gives one output per layer. A tower of size 2 gives only the first output of a recipe, size 3 gives the first two, and so on. This pack keeps the mod default for the maximum tower height, set by maxDistillationTowerHeight, at 9.[18][19]

Electricity

The Steam Turbine converts every mb of steam into 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick. It only sends power into cables on its output side. Cables have tiers that decide how much they carry and which machines they connect to: copper, silver and tin are LV, while cupronickel and electrum are MV. A network pulls in at most 256 EU/t on LV, 1,024 EU/t on MV and 8,192 EU/t on HV. Single-block electric machines only connect to LV cables.[20]

To move power between tiers, use Transformers. A low-to-high transformer has 5 inputs and 1 output, and a high-to-low one has 1 input and 5 outputs. The Diesel Generator is an alternative power source. It produces up to 256 EU/t and only connects to MV cables.[20][21]

Electric machines work like steam machines, but they progressively overclock recipes, up to 32 EU/t for regular machines and 128 EU/t for multiblocks. Upgrades in the machine's menu raise that cap, and REI shows the exact amounts. You can also overclock by hand by right-clicking with a lubricant container, where each 25 mb of lubricant adds 1 efficiency tick.[12]

An Overdrive Module stops efficiency from dropping when a machine stops processing, but the machine keeps consuming EU/t as if it were working. Right-clicking a machine with an Advanced Machine Hull converts it to MV tier, and then it accepts only MV cables.[22]

For other mods, forgeEnergyPerEu sets how many Forge Energy units one EU is worth. The pack uses 10, the same as the mod default. The pack also enables compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat, even though the mod recommends leaving it off unless the other mods are balanced for it.[19][23]

Fluid handling

Each fluid pipe has an internal buffer of exactly one bucket, or 1,000 millibuckets. Directly connected pipes link up and share storage, so the network's per-tick rate is bounded by its total capacity. For example, 25 linked pipes can transfer up to 25,000 mb/t. Adding one steel tank with an I/O connection, which holds 16 buckets, brings that to 41,000 mb/t. You may still be limited by the machines or tanks at the ends.[24]

Up to 3 pipes fit in one block, and pipes of different colors won't connect. A wrench changes the connection type. A fluid pipe holds only one fluid and by default won't connect to empty pipes or blocks, but you can force a connection with the wrench.[25]

Items and automation

Item pipes don't connect to inventories by default, and they start in whitelist mode, so nothing moves until you switch to blacklist or add items to the filter. Configure both sides of the pipe, or items won't move. Pipes insert into higher priorities first, and they can be upgraded with motors. The base rate is set by baseItemPipeTransfer, which is 16 items per 3 seconds here, the same as the mod default.[23][25]

The configuration card copies Item Pipe settings. Hold it in your offhand and it applies automatically to any Item Pipe you place.[26]

  • The Assembler automates almost all recipes, up to 3 per Assembler with slot locking. The guide suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuit, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyor Belts early.[12]
  • The Configurable Chest has 27 configurable slots and auto-eject, and you can craft it once you have Analog Circuits.[12]
  • The Configurable Tank has 9 configurable slots that each hold 16 buckets, plus auto-eject.[27]
  • Bronze barrels store 32 stacks of one item, and bronze tanks hold 4 buckets. A broken barrel keeps its contents.[28]
  • The Automatic Trash Can destroys any item or fluid piped into it.[14]

Pack-specific settings

This pack leaves these recipe generators on: recipes.stonecutterToCuttingMachine creates cutting machine recipes for all stonecutter recipes, and recipes.compostableToPlantOil creates plant oil recipes in the centrifuge for all compostable items. The guidebook isn't given on first join or respawn, because spawnWithGuideBook and respawnWithGuideBook are both false.[23]

The mod's guide strongly discourages pairing it with on-demand automation mods like AE2, because electric machines work best running continuously. The pack still enables compat.ae2Integration, and it changes the recipe for the ME Wire. Here is the in-pack version:[3][19][29]

How do you progress through Modern Industrialization?

4 parts

Modern Industrialization progression in this pack is guided by quest chapters. They run from bronze steam machines to steel steam machines, then LV electric machines, then the oil, stainless steel, titanium and tungsten stages. Here is the path, quest by quest.[5][6][30]

Steam age: bronze to steel

  1. The first quest asks for a Forge Hammer (a quest in "?"). The next quest asks for Bronze Machine Casing, and the Bronze Boiler quest follows it.[5]
  2. Next come the Bronze Water Pump and the Bronze Compressor. The Bronze Macerator and Bronze Furnace have their own quests.[5]
  3. Build a Coke Oven. The quest wants it together with the bronze item and fluid hatches (input and output) and 21 bricks.[5]
  4. Coke Dust (Coke Dust) then branches into Uncooked Steel Dust and Raw Synthetic Oil Bucket.[5]
  5. The synthetic oil route unlocks the Bronze Mixer and the Steam Blast Furnace, and from the mixer you reach Rubber Sheet.[5]
  6. Steel is the second steam tier. The Steel Upgrade opens a block of steel machine quests: furnace, macerator, unpacker, cutting machine, mixer, wiremill, water pump, compressor, boiler and packer. The Steam Quarry sits in the same group and leads to the Bronze Drill.[5]

The pack added its own Immersive Engineering crusher recipes that turn coal coke and coal coke blocks into Coke Dust.[11]

The rubber route works like this: Coke Dust mixed with water gives Raw Synthetic Oil. You burn that in the Steam Blast Furnace to get Synthetic Oil, and mixing that with paper gives rubber sheets. The in-game guide strongly recommends automating it.[10]

Electric age: LV and the Analog Circuit

After rubber you get the Analog Circuit Board. The wire and component quests follow: Copper Wire, Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor. Together they lead to the Analog Circuit.[5]

Assembler (modern_industrialization)

Recipe id: modern_industrialization:assembler_generated/electric_age/circuit/craft/lv_circuit

Electric machines work like steam machines but run on electricity, and they overclock progressively up to 32 EU/t. Multiblocks cap at 128 EU/t by default. Single-block electric machines only connect to LV cables, and the Steam Turbine is the first power source: it converts every mb of steam to 1 EU, up to 32 mb per tick.[12][20][31]

Tip: The guide suggests automating Machine Hulls, Analog Circuits, Motors, Pistons, Robot Arms and Conveyors with Assemblers as soon as you can. That makes crafting electric machines basically free.[12]

Oil, stainless steel and digital circuits

This stage runs through the Electronic Circuit. After it come the Large Pump and Large Motor, which gate the Distillery, Chemical Reactor, Electrolyzer and Oil Drilling Rig. The Advanced Machine Hull also sits here, along with the Electric Quarry and Vacuum Freezer.[6]

The plastics chain is a straight quest line. It starts with Crude Oil Bucket from the rig, then goes through sulfuric light fuel, light fuel, steam-cracked light fuel and ethylene to Polyethylene Bucket. Polyethylene, together with stainless steel, unlocks the Digital Circuit Board.[6]

Stainless steel needs several side materials first: chromium, manganese, oxygen, sulfuric acid and a manganese sulfuric solution. The quests then take the dust through a hot ingot to the Stainless Steel Ingot, and the vacuum freezer quest is also required before the ingot.[6]

Age of oil: turbo hull, titanium, tungsten and processing units

A second digital circuit quest leads to the Arithmetic Logic Unit. The Turbo Machine Hull comes after that digital circuit quest and the stainless steel ingot. The hull gates a lot: the Distillation Tower, Heat Exchanger, a processing array multiblock, and the raw titanium and raw tungsten quests.[30]

Titanium goes from Raw Titanium through a hot ingot to the Titanium Ingot. Tungsten has a longer quest chain: Raw Tungsten, then dust, tiny dust and nugget, ending at the Tungsten Ingot. The pack changed several tungsten recipes from other mods, and one of them is shown below.[11][30]

The pack changed this Geore smelting recipe for Tungsten Ingot.

Both metals combine into the Mixed Blastproof Ingot, then the Blastproof Alloy Plate. That leads to the Implosion Compressor quest.[30]

In parallel, the Processing Unit quest needs the Processing Unit Board, the Arithmetic Logic Unit and Random Access Memory, which in turn comes after Monocrystalline Silicon. The Highly Advanced Upgrade also hangs off the board quest. Stainless steel additionally leads to the Kanthal Ingot and Kanthal Coil.[30]

How does Modern Industrialization work with other mods?

3 parts

The clearest link between Modern Industrialization (MI) and another mod in this pack is Extended Industrialization. Its machines and components are crafted from MI parts, and many of them have both a crafting grid recipe and an Assembler recipe.[11]

Extended Industrialization machines

Extended Industrialization adds extra machines in MI's style: Alloy Smelter, Bending Machine, Brewery, Canning Machine, Composter, Farmer and Honey Extractor. The electric versions are built from MI hulls, circuits, rotors and cables. The steel Alloy Smelter, Brewery, Canning Machine and Honey Extractor use MI's Steel Machine Casing and Bronze Rotor.[11]

The Bronze Bending Machine and Bronze Composter turn into their steel versions with MI's Steel Upgrade. You can do this in a normal crafting grid or in a Packer, and an Unpacker reverses it and gives the upgrade back. The Steel Upgrade also has its own step in the steam age quest chapter: a quest in "?".[5][11]

Quests that mix mods

The Electric Quarry quest a quest in "?" asks for MI hatches, a drill and machine casings, plus 4 vanilla chains. For the drill it accepts any MI drill, or one of the KubeJS drills: Allthemodium, Vibranium or Unobtainium.[6]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Modern Industrialization?

5 parts

Modern Industrialization is spread across five quest chapters in the pack. They run in this order: steam_age, the_electric_age, rust_free_and_oiled, age_of_oil and the_nuclear_age. The chapters link into each other. The analog circuit at the end of steam_age feeds the_electric_age, and the electronic circuit there unlocks rust_free_and_oiled. Its stainless steel and digital circuit quests lead on to age_of_oil, and age_of_oil leads into the_nuclear_age. Almost every quest asks you to obtain one item or machine.[5][6][30][32][33]

steam_age

You start by getting a Forge Hammer (a quest in "?"), then four Bronze Machine Casing (a quest in "?") and a Bronze Boiler (a quest in "?"). The bronze line continues with the Bronze Water Pump (a quest in "?") and the Bronze Compressor (a quest in "?"). The bronze macerator and furnace are separate quests.[5]

Next comes the coke oven quest (a quest in "?"). It asks for the four bronze hatches, 21 bricks and the Coke Oven. After that you make Coke Dust (a quest in "?"). That opens Uncooked Steel Dust (a quest in "?") and a Raw Synthetic Oil Bucket (a quest in "?"). The oil bucket in turn leads to the Bronze Mixer and the Steam Blast Furnace.[5]

The Steel Upgrade (a quest in "?") is a hub for the steel-tier machines. The steel macerator, furnace, unpacker, packer, cutting machine, mixer, wiremill, water pump, compressor and boiler, plus the Steam Quarry, all hang off it. The chapter ends with the Analog Circuit (a quest in "?"). It needs the resistor, inductor, capacitor and analog circuit board quests first.[5]

the_electric_age

This chapter begins with the Redstone Battery and Motor quests, then the Basic Machine Hull. It goes on through the electric versions of the mixer, wiremill, packer, macerator, compressor, unpacker and cutting machine, and the Basic Upgrade. The Electric Blast Furnace quest (a quest in "?") asks for 16 Cupronickel Coil and 14 Heatproof Machine Casing. Later quests cover the Centrifuge, Silicon Dust, Diode, Transistor and the Electronic Circuit, plus the Overdrive Module.[32]

Unverified The listing for the_electric_age was cut off, so some of its quests are not covered here.

rust_free_and_oiled

Chromium and manganese quests follow the centrifuge. You then build the Advanced Machine Hull, the Vacuum Freezer, the Electric Quarry and the Large Pump with the Large Motor. Oil is next. The Oil Drilling Rig (a quest in "?") leads to the Crude Oil Bucket. The Distillery, Chemical Reactor and Electrolyzer are also here.[6]

The fuel chain runs from Sulfuric Light Fuel Bucket to Light Fuel Bucket, then Steam-Cracked Light Fuel Bucket, Ethylene Bucket and Polyethylene Bucket. A separate stainless steel chain goes from Stainless Steel Dust to the Stainless Steel Hot Ingot and the Stainless Steel Ingot. Together they unlock the Digital Circuit Board, and the chapter finishes with the Digital Circuit (a quest in "?"). That quest also needs the op amp and the AND, NOT and OR gate quests.[6]

age_of_oil

The Kanthal Ingot and Kanthal Coil come first, then the Turbo Machine Hull (a quest in "?"). It opens several branches: the Distillation Tower, a tungsten line (Raw Tungsten to Tungsten Ingot) and a titanium line (Raw Titanium to Titanium Ingot). The Heat Exchanger and Cryofluid Bucket are also on the list. The tungsten and titanium lines meet at the Mixed Blastproof Ingot, then the Blastproof Alloy Plate, and finally the Implosion Compressor (a quest in "?").[30]

A second thread covers the Arithmetic Logic Unit, Random Access Memory, Processing Unit Board and Processing Unit (a quest in "?"). The Highly Advanced Upgrade is in this chapter too.[30]

the_nuclear_age

The visible quests start with another Processing Unit quest, which follows the age_of_oil one. Next is the Implosion Compressor (a quest in "?"), then the Superconductor Ingot (a quest in "?") and Industrial TNT.[33]

Unverified The listing for the_nuclear_age was cut off after the first few quests, so what it asks for beyond industrial TNT is unconfirmed.

Which Modern Industrialization config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Modern Industrialization has two config files you'll care about here: a server file and a startup file. Here's what this pack sets in them. The pack doesn't change any value that the sources list a mod default for, so the three numeric options below all match the mod's own defaults.[19][23]

Transfer, energy and multiblock size

  • baseItemPipeTransfer is 16, the same as the mod default. It is the base amount of items an item pipe moves every 3 seconds, and it can be set anywhere from 1 to 1,024.[23]
  • forgeEnergyPerEu is 10, the same as the mod default. This is how many Forge Energy units a single EU from the mod is worth, and it can be set from 1 to 1,000.[23]
  • maxDistillationTowerHeight is 9, the same as the mod default. It caps the height of the distillation tower multiblock, and it can be set from 1 to 32.[19]

Generated recipes

Compatibility switches

The pack turns on compat.ae2Integration, compat.almostUnifiedIntegration and compat.ftbQuestsIntegration. Each one only does anything if the other mod is present.[19]

compat.bidirectionalEnergyCompat is also true in this pack. That means energy compatibility with NeoForge's energy system works in both directions. The config comment recommends leaving it false unless the other mods have been balanced accordingly, so keep that in mind if you plan to mix power sources.[19]

Guidebook, trades and developer options

What changed in Modern Industrialization between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Modern Industrialization 2.3.10. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier, so it's part of the pack from the start.[2]

Modern Industrialization 2.3.10

  • Custom multiblocks can now have a custom CrafterComponent. This is mainly useful for addon and pack developers building their own multiblock machines, so you won't notice it in normal play.[34]
  • Translations were updated from Crowdin.[34]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Modern Industrialization were available, so any changes made to it in earlier pack releases are unconfirmed.
