What is Ex Deorum?
2 parts
Ex Deorum is a port of the classic 1.7 SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond. It brings the skyblock loop of getting everything from almost nothing, and it includes a SkyBlock world type out of the box. This pack ships version 3.12.[1][2]
If you like starting small and building up, this is your mod. In this pack it runs the early game: "(Oak) Barrel" quest and "Sieves and Meshes" quest in Chapter 1 introduce the barrel and the sieve. The quest text calls sieves the way you get most of your resources.[3]
How the early game flows
- Make a Crook and break leaves to get Silkworm. Throw them on leaves to infest them, then break the infested leaves for string ("Infesting our Trees" quest).[3]
- Craft an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh. The sieve does nothing without a mesh, and neighbouring sieves work at the same time, up to a 5x5 area ("Sieves and Meshes" quest).[3]
- Make a Stone Hammer to crush blocks into sieve-friendly versions, such as Crushed Deepslate and Crushed Blackstone ("Hammers" quest).[3]
- Sieve for ore chunks. 4 chunks make 1 raw ore block, for example Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk ("Ore Chunks" quest).[3]
- Upgrade your mesh, for example to a Flint Mesh. A better mesh changes both what drops and the drop rate ("Upgraded Meshes" quest).[3]
Other things you will meet
- Sieving dirt gives you Grass Seeds, which turn any dirt into grass. It can also rarely give Mycelium Spores ("Grass Seeds" quest, "Bring on the Mold!" quest).[3]
- Shift-right-clicking the top of a grass block gives pebbles, and 4 pebbles combine into the matching stone ("Digging through Grass" quest).[3]
- Porcelain clay unlocks the Porcelain Bucket and the Porcelain Crucible. The crucible melts blocks into lava over a heat source ("Porcelain Clay" quest, "Porcelain Crucible" quest).[3]
- A barrel placed above a mycelium block and filled with water makes Witch Water Bucket material ("Witch Water" quest).[3]
The mod also has JEI compatibility for all of its blocks, so check JEI to see what each mesh can drop.[1][3]
Unverified The mod's own page describes a watering can with six tiers, and says a wooden one plus a torch are given at world start by default (both configurable). I could not confirm from the pack's files whether this pack keeps those defaults.
How do you get started with Ex Deorum?
6 parts
Welcome to the void! Ex Deorum drops you into a SkyBlock world, so you start with almost nothing and build up through trees, sieves and hammers. Here is the order I'd go in, following the pack's first quest chapter.[3][4]
First, make a Crook
After punching trees, turn your wood into sticks and make a Crook. Breaking leaves with it gives you more sapling drops and a chance at silkworms.[3][4]
A silkworm has a 1 in 100 chance to drop from leaves harvested with a Crook, so be patient. Use a Silkworm on a tree's leaves to infest them. The infestation spreads through the whole tree, and fully infested leaves give string when you break them, but no saplings. This is covered in "Infesting our Trees" quest.[3][4]
Next, build a sieve and a mesh
Sieves are how you get most of your resources. Make an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh. A sieve does nothing without a mesh: right click the sieve with the mesh to install it, and shift right click to take it out. Sieves next to each other work at the same time, up to a 5x5 area. The quest for this step is "Sieves and Meshes" quest.[3][4]
Better meshes change which items drop and how often, so you will want upgrades like the Flint Mesh soon. You can also enchant meshes with Fortune and Efficiency.[3][4]
Then, grab a barrel
The Oak Barrel is nothing like a vanilla barrel. You use it to mix items with liquids, and it fills with water when it rains. Don't put lava in a wooden one, because it will burn. Use a stone barrel for that. See "(Oak) Barrel" quest.[3]
Get a hammer
Rocks are too hard to go through a sieve, so you crush them first. Break blocks with the Stone Hammer to get crushed versions, such as Crushed Deepslate, Crushed Blackstone and Dust. Dust matters later because sieving it is how you get Sky Stone Dust. The quest is "Hammers" quest.[3][5]
Once you need lots of gravel, sand and dust, upgrade to the Compressed Stone Hammer. It can hammer compressed blocks like normal blocks, so compressed cobblestone gives 9 gravel.[3]

Collect pebbles, dirt and ores
- Shift right click the top of a grass block to get pebbles. Four pebbles combine into the matching stone, or you can press K while hovering over them in your inventory.[3]
- Sieve dirt for Grass Seeds, which turn any dirt into grass, and for rare Mycelium Spores.[3][4]
- Sieving for ores gives you chunks like Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk. Four chunks make one raw ore block.[3]
Where to go next
Put water in a barrel on top of mycelium to make Witch Water, as in "Witch Water" quest. For buckets and crucibles, make Porcelain Clay Ball first. A Porcelain Crucible cooks blocks like stone or netherrack into lava over a heat source, and an Oak Crucible turns leaves into water faster than rain fills a barrel.[3][4]
How does Ex Deorum work?
7 parts
Ex Deorum is built around a handful of simple machines and containers: barrels, sieves, crucibles and hammers. Here is how the ones the sources explain behave in this pack, including the config values the pack uses.[1][4][6]
Sieves
Sieves sift items out of soft blocks like gravel and dirt, and they won't work without a mesh. Meshes can be enchanted with Fortune for better drop chances and Efficiency for faster sifting. Different meshes give different drops.[4]
Sieves in a 5x5 area can be used at the same time. That comes from server.simultaneous_sieve_usage being on and server.simultaneous_sieve_range set to 2, where 1 means 3x3, 2 means 5x5, 3 means 7x7, and so on. Compressed sieves follow the same idea through server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage, which is also on.[4][6]
- server.sieve_interval is 1 in the pack. It is the minimum number of ticks between two sifts and only affects sifting by hand.[6]
- server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is on, so sifting Moss Blocks is limited to 1-2 items. This keeps the output from getting spammy when many mods add saplings.[6]
Automation: Mechanical Sieve and Hammer
The Mechanical Sieve sifts blocks without you standing there. It needs a mesh and Forge Energy (FE), and it supports three redstone control modes. Ex Deorum has no way to generate FE, so you need another mod for power.[4]
In this pack the Mechanical Sieve uses 40 FE per tick while sifting (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption) and stores up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage). Both match the mod defaults.[6]
The Mechanical Hammer crushes blocks for you, also on FE and with the same three redstone modes. It works with no hammer inside. Adding any hammer doubles its speed, and Efficiency on that hammer speeds it up further.[4]
The pack keeps the default numbers for it: 20 FE per tick while crushing (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_consumption) and 40,000 FE of storage (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_storage).[6]
Barrels and water
Barrels compost organic material into dirt. Composting advances by 0.004 each tick (server.barrel_progress_step), which is the mod default.[4][6]
Barrels fill with rain while it rains and they are exposed to the sky (server.barrels_collect_rain_water). Wooden crucibles do the same (server.crucibles_collect_rain_water). Both options are on in the pack. Glass bottles can also move water between crucibles and barrels, because server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is on.[6]
Witch water
Put water in a barrel on top of mycelium to get witch water. More mycelium speeds the process up. A barrel of witch water also grows mushrooms on nearby mycelium.[4]
Entity conversion is enabled in the pack (server.allow_witch_water_entity_conversion). An entity that steps into witch water may change. For example, a Villager can become a Zombie Villager, a Skeleton a Wither Skeleton, a Creeper a Charged Creeper, and a Pig or Piglin a Zombified Piglin.[6]
Witch water and lava make a netherrack generator, similar to a cobblestone generator. That is on in the pack through server.witch_water_netherrack_generator. The dirt version, water flowing into witch water, is off (server.witch_water_dirt_generator).[4][6]
Crooks and silk worms
A Crook doubles sapling drops from leaves. Silk worms have a 1 in 100 chance to drop from leaves harvested with a Crook. Using one on a tree's leaves infests them, and the infestation gradually spreads through the whole tree. Leaves that are 100% infested can be harvested for string but no longer drop saplings.[4]
Watering cans and the starting kit
Watering cans speed up crop growth, tree growth and grass spreading, among other things. You can fill them from barrels and wooden crucibles. Golden and higher cans don't need refilling once full, Diamond cans water a 3x3 area, and Netherite cans can be used by machinery. There are six tiers in total.[1][4]
In a void world you start with a torch (server.starting_torch) and a full wooden watering can (server.starting_watering_can). Both options are on in the pack. The spawn island tree is always an oak, because server.use_biome_appropriate_tree is off, and the default tree feature is set by server.default_spawn_tree_feature.[6]
Wood variants and pack-changed recipes
Barrels, sieves and crucibles come in many wood types, such as Acacia Barrel, Bamboo Sieve and Cherry Crucible. The pack changes the Archwood versions, so check the recipes below for the in-pack versions.[7]

How do you progress through Ex Deorum?
7 parts
Ex Deorum is how you build your whole world from nothing in this pack, and the quests walk you through it. The progression is basically a ladder of meshes: the better your mesh, the better the drops from your sieves. Here's the path in the order the quest chapters take you through it.[3][5]
Tier 1: Wood, string and your first sieve
You start by punching trees. The "Infesting our Trees" quest quest has you make a Crook. Breaking leaves with it drops extra saplings and Silkworms. Throw a silkworm on leaves to infest them, and the infestation spreads on its own. That's your early string supply.[3]
Next come the Oak Barrel and the Oak Sieve. The barrel mixes items with liquids, and the quest warns that wooden barrels burn if you put lava in them, so use a stone one for that. A sieve does nothing until you put a mesh in it, and the String Mesh is the first one. Place sieves side by side and they work together, up to a 5x5 area.[3]

Hammers and crushed blocks
Rocks are too hard to pass through a sieve, so the "Hammers" quest quest has you break blocks with a Stone Hammer to get crushed versions. Sneak-right-clicking the top of a grass block also gives Stone Pebbles, and four pebbles combine into the matching stone. The hammer recipes below cover Dust, Crushed Blackstone, Crushed Deepslate and Crushed End Stone.[3][7]
The pack also adds Create crushing recipes for blackstone, deepslate blocks, end stone and sand, so you can make the same crushed materials with machines.[7]
Tier 2: Dirt, ore chunks and porcelain
Sieving dirt gives crops and Grass Seeds. Mycelium Spores come rarely from dirt too, and they spread mycelium onto dirt or grass. Mycelium is what you need for Witch Water: put a barrel above a mycelium block and fill it with water. Those quests are "Grass Seeds" quest, "Bring on the Mold!" quest and "Witch Water" quest.[3]
Ores arrive as chunks, not full raw ore. The "Ore Chunks" quest quest asks for Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk. Four chunks make one raw ore block, and pressing K while hovering over them in your inventory combines them instantly.[3]
Porcelain is the other branch of this tier, starting with the "Porcelain Clay" quest quest. A Porcelain Clay Ball leads to the Porcelain Bucket and the Porcelain Crucible. The quest notes the porcelain bucket breaks after you place lava with it, though water is fine. The porcelain crucible cooks blocks like stone or netherrack into lava over a heat source.[3]
If you want water without waiting for rain, the Oak Crucible turns leaves into water. That's what "Water from Leaves" quest is about.[3]
Upgrading your meshes
The "Upgraded Meshes" quest quest explains that better meshes change both what drops and how often. The recipes below cover the Flint Mesh, the Iron Mesh, the Diamond Mesh (the step after the Golden Mesh) and the Netherite Mesh.[3][7]

The pack has compressed sieve recipes for every mesh tier from string up to netherite. They cover compressed dirt, gravel and crushed deepslate, among others. To feed them, the "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest quest has you make a Compressed Stone Hammer, which hammers compressed blocks as if they were normal ones. Compressed cobble gives 9 gravel.[3][7]

Tier 3: Chapter 2 and the mid-game materials
Chapter 2 is where sieving turns into real modpack progression. "Sky Stone" quest points you at sieving dust for Sky Stone Dust, which you need for your presses. Crushed blackstone with cheap meshes only gives Nether or black-themed items like magma and black dye, but it can also give ancient debris at a very low chance. The better the mesh, the better the chance. Crushed end stone gives ender pearls, eyes of ender, chorus fruit and flowers. See "Crushed Blackstone" quest and "Crushed Endstone" quest.[5]
The End Cake is how you get to the End. The "Getting to The End" quest quest says eating it teleports you there, and it recommends taking a Waystone to make teleporting between the two much easier.[5]

Tier 4: Diamond and Netherite meshes
"The best Meshes!" quest is the payoff. With diamond and netherite meshes you get the best chances for the rarest items. The quest lists Draconium Dust and Deep Dark items from end stone, Soulium from soul sand, Urananite from sand, Isneium from blackstone, and AllTheModium nuggets from both sand and blackstone.[5]
Deep Dark items lead into "Spawning The Warden" quest. A Sculk Core used on an unnatural Sculk Shrieker lets it spawn the Warden, and you can get Sculk Shriekers from sieving.[5]

Side quests that use sieves
- Armor trims: since the structures that hold them are gone in the sky, sieving sand with a Golden Mesh has a chance to give you a Random Armor Trim. See a quest in "Basic Armor".[7][8]
- Edelwood: sieving moss with an Iron Mesh or better is a third way to get Growing Edelwood in the pack. See a quest in "Forbidden and Arcanus".[9]
How does Ex Deorum work with other mods?
4 parts
The mod's default recipes only cover vanilla items, so everything that links Ex Deorum to other mods in this pack comes from recipes the pack added or changed. Most of it is sieve drops: the pack adds items from other mods to the sieve. A few recipes also connect Ex Deorum's crushed blocks to Create and All the Compressed.[1][7]
Sieve drops from other mods
These sieve recipes are all added by the pack. Which drops you can get depends on the mesh in your Oak Sieve, and that is why the mesh upgrades matter so much.[3][7]
- Sieving Dirt with a flint, iron, golden, diamond or netherite mesh can give Canola Seeds, Coffee Beans and Flax Seeds, plus Silent Gear's Flax Seeds.[7]
- Sieving Gravel with an iron, golden or diamond mesh can give Create's Asurine, Crimsite, Ochrum and Veridium, plus Kivi.[7]
- Sieving Sand with an iron, golden or diamond mesh can give Black Quartz and Fluorite. Only the diamond mesh has sand recipes for Uraninite and Allthemodium Nugget.[7]
- Sieving Dust with an iron, golden or diamond mesh can give Salt, Sulfur and Arcane Crystal.[7]
- The Xychorium gems (Blue Xychorium Gem, Dark Xychorium Gem, Green Xychorium Gem, Light Xychorium Gem and Red Xychorium Gem) come from sieving dust with a flint, iron or diamond mesh.[7]
- Sieving Moss Block with an iron, golden or diamond mesh can give Flashing Archwood Sapling, Growing Edelwood and Menril Sapling.[7]
- Sieving Soul Sand with an iron, golden or diamond mesh can give Prosperity Shard. Soulium Dust drops with the diamond mesh only.[7]
- Sieving Crushed Blackstone with a diamond or netherite mesh can give Allthemodium Nugget.[7]
- Sieving Crushed End Stone with a diamond or netherite mesh can give Draconium Dust.[7]

All the Compressed
The pack links Ex Deorum's crushed blocks with their All the Compressed 1x versions, in both directions. This covers Crushed Blackstone, Crushed Deepslate, Crushed End Stone, Crushed Netherrack and Dust. The recipes below show the dust version.[7]
Compressing Ex Deorum dust.
Decompressing it again.
The quest "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest ties the two together. It has you make an Compressed Stone Hammer by combining 9 hammers, so it can hammer compressed blocks like normal ones. The quest's example is that compressed cobblestone gives 9 gravel.[3]
Applied Energistics 2
The quest "Sky Stone" quest points you to sieve Dust to get Sky Stone Dust. You need it for your Presses, and it can also be smelted into Sky Stone.[5]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Ex Deorum?
4 parts
Ex Deorum quests show up in four chapters of the pack. Most of them are in Chapter 1, where the mod's core loop is taught, and the rarer sieve drops come later in Chapter 2. Here they are in the order you'll meet them.[3][5][8][9]
Chapter 1: Starting out
You begin with wood and leaves. "Infesting our Trees" quest asks for a Crook, Silkworm and string. You break leaves with the crook to get silkworms, then throw those on leaves to infest them, which gives you string. "(Oak) Barrel" quest is the Oak Barrel, and it also unlocks later quests. Both quests come right after Punching Trees.[3]
"Sieves and Meshes" quest follows the infested trees and asks for an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh. Sieves are where most of your resources come from. After that, "Ore Chunks" quest asks for Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk, and "Upgraded Meshes" quest asks for a Flint Mesh.[3]
- "Digging through Grass" quest (after Grass): get a Stone Pebble by sneak-right-clicking the top of a grass block.[3]
- "Hammers" quest (after Cobblestone): craft a Stone Hammer to crush blocks into sieve-friendly versions.[3]
- Three untitled follow-ups after the hammer quest ask you to hammer your way to Dust (a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out"), Crushed Blackstone (a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out") and Crushed Deepslate (a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out").[3]
- "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest (after Compressed Blocks): make a Compressed Stone Hammer by combining 9 hammers.[3]
Dirt has its own branch, after Making Dirt?. "Grass Seeds" quest asks for Grass Seeds, and "Bring on the Mold!" quest asks for Mycelium Spores. Once you have spores and the barrel, "Witch Water" quest asks for a Witch Water Bucket or a Porcelain Witch Water Bucket.[3]
The porcelain line starts with "Porcelain Clay" quest and a Porcelain Clay Ball, after Clay. From there you can branch to "Porcelain Bucket" quest, where a Porcelain Bucket or a regular bucket completes it, or to "Porcelain Crucible" quest for a Porcelain Crucible. Separately, "Water from Leaves" quest (after Collecting Leaves) asks for an Oak Crucible.[3]
Chapter 2: The Cool Parts
Three quests open right after The Cool Parts: "Crushed Endstone" quest (Crushed End Stone), "Sky Stone" quest (dust or Applied Energistics 2 sky dust) and "Crushed Blackstone" quest (Crushed Blackstone). Crushed End Stone leads to "Getting to The End" quest, which asks for an End Cake.[5]
Later, "The best Meshes!" quest asks for a Diamond Mesh and a Netherite Mesh. It unlocks after the Netherite Upgrade Template and Netherite Ingot quests. The last Ex Deorum quest here is "Spawning The Warden" quest, after Deep Dark Items. It asks for a Sculk Shrieker and a Sculk Core.[5]
Basic Armor
a quest in "Basic Armor" asks for a Random Armor Trim. The quest says you can get one by sieving sand with a Golden Mesh. "Occultism OR Random Armor Trim" quest is just a gate that accepts either that trim or the Occultism dictionary of spirits.[8]
Forbidden and Arcanus
a quest in "Forbidden and Arcanus" asks for an Iron Mesh and a moss block. The idea is to sieve moss with an Iron Mesh or better to get Edelwood, which the quest describes as a third way to get it in this pack.[9]
Which Ex Deorum config options matter?
4 parts
Ex Deorum keeps its settings in the server config, and this pack ships it with a handful of choices that shape how your skyblock plays. Every value the file lists next to a mod default (the numeric ones) matches that default, so the pack hasn't changed any of them. Here's what is worth knowing.[6]
Starting items
In a void world you begin with a torch and a full wooden watering can. Both are switched on in this pack through server.starting_torch and server.starting_watering_can. The mod describes these as configurable starting items.[1][6]
The spawn tree uses server.default_spawn_tree_feature, set to minecraft:oak_tree_bees_005. server.use_biome_appropriate_tree is false here, so the spawn tree is always an oak.[6]
Sieves
- server.sieve_interval is 1, the same as the mod default. It only affects hand sifting, and it's the minimum number of ticks between two sifts.[6]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_usage and server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage are both true, so you can work several sieves in a 3x3 or larger area at once.[6]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_range is 2, the mod default. That means a maximum of 5x5 sieves at once.[6]
- server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is true, so Moss Block sieving is restricted to 1-2 items. This keeps sapling-heavy drops from getting spammy.[6]
- server.automated_sieves is true, so machines and fake players can interact with the Sieve. server.nerf_automated_sieves is false, so they aren't held back from sieving in a 3x3 or larger. The config notes that the intended automation method is the Mechanical Sieve.[6]
Mechanical machines
The pack leaves the machine power numbers at the mod defaults. The mechanical hammer uses 20 FE/t (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_consumption) and stores up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_storage). The mechanical sieve uses 40 FE/t (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption) and also stores up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage).[6]
Water, barrels and Witch Water
- Barrel composting advances by 0.004 per tick, the mod default (server.barrel_progress_step).[6]
- Barrels and wooden crucibles both fill with rain water when exposed to the sky (server.barrels_collect_rain_water and server.crucibles_collect_rain_water are true). Glass bottles can also move water between crucibles and barrels (server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is true).[6]
- Witch Water entity conversion is on (server.allow_witch_water_entity_conversion). For example, a Villager becomes a Zombie Villager and a Creeper becomes a Charged Creeper.[6]
- Witch Water makes netherrack when lava flows into it (server.witch_water_netherrack_generator is true). The dirt version, where water flowing into it forms dirt, is off (server.witch_water_dirt_generator is false).[6]
Unverified The config file only lists mod defaults for the numeric options. For the on/off options, such as the dirt generator being off, it doesn't say whether the pack changed the mod's default, so treat those as this pack's values rather than confirmed changes.
What changed in Ex Deorum between versions?
1 part
This pack ships Ex Deorum 3.12, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for Ex Deorum, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
Changes by mod version
- 3.12 (the version in this pack): fixed a typo that broke Grass Seeds, Mycelium Spores and Warped Nylium Spores.[2][10]
- 3.10: the mod now requires KubeJS 7.2, which fixes an incompatibility.[11]
- 3.9: added the item tags #exdeorum:hammer_fortune_blacklist and #exdeorum:compressed_hammer_fortune_blacklist. Pack makers can use them to stop Fortune from affecting a block's hammer or compressed hammer drops.[12]
- 3.8: fixed a memory leak in VisualUpdateTracker and added Hungarian and Japanese translations.[13]
- 3.7: fixed Barrel Mixing recipes with a result size greater than 1 only giving one output. Drops for Random Armor Trim and Pottery Sherd can now be changed, and Tide was added to the possible trims.[14]
The changelogs don't say whether the pack changes any of these tags or drops. If you want to know how a specific drop behaves in this pack, check it in game rather than assuming the mod default.[12][14]
