What is Ex Deorum?

1 part

Ex Deorum is a port of the classic SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond. If you're starting in a world with almost nothing, this is the mod that turns the basics into resources. The pack ships version 3.7.[1][2]

Unlike the original mod and its other ports, Ex Deorum includes a SkyBlock world type out of the box. Its recipes all live in data packs, and its blocks have JEI support, so you can look up what each one does in-game.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

Ex Deorum is built into the pack's first chapter, Starting Out. Its quests there cover the tools and machines you need first, so this mod is your early-game foundation.[3]

The mod also adds a watering can item as an alternative to bone meal, with six tiers, starting with a wooden one.[1]

Unverified The mod's default recipes only use vanilla items, and by default the player starts with a wooden watering can and a torch. Whether this pack changes any of these recipes, drops or starting items could not be confirmed from the sources.

How do you get started with Ex Deorum?

6 parts

Welcome to Ex Deorum! You spawn into a SkyBlock void world, so everything starts from almost nothing. The pack's first quest chapter walks you through the early items, and the order below follows it.[3][4]

Barrel and crook

Start with the Oak Barrel (a quest in "?"). Barrels compost organic material into dirt, and dirt is the base of everything else you do here.[3][4]

Next, craft a Crook (a quest in "?"). It doubles sapling drops from leaves, which helps you get a tree going.[3][4]

Recipe id: exdeorum:crook

Leaves harvested with a crook have a 1 in 100 chance to drop a silk worm. Use the silk worm on a tree to infest its leaves. Once they are 100% infested you can harvest them for string, but they stop dropping saplings.[4]

Sieve and string mesh

The next quest, a quest in "?", asks for an Oak Sieve, a String Mesh and some gravel. Sieves sift soft blocks like gravel and dirt, and they need a mesh to work. Sieves in a 5x5 area can run at the same time.[3][4]

Witch water

Once you have mycelium, a quest in "?" asks for a Witch Water Bucket. You make witch water by putting water in a barrel on top of mycelium, and more mycelium speeds it up. Witch water plus lava can also make a netherrack generator.[3][4]

Hammers and dust

The Stone Hammer (a quest in "?") is your first hammer. Later, a quest in "?" asks for Dust, which hammering can produce.[3][5]

Mesh upgrades

Different meshes give different drops, and you can enchant them with Fortune for better drop chances or Efficiency for faster sifting. The quests take you up the tiers one at a time: Flint Mesh, Iron Mesh, Golden Mesh, Diamond Mesh and finally Netherite Mesh. Each tier is crafted from the one before it.[3][4][5]

How does Ex Deorum work?

8 parts

Ex Deorum is built around a few simple blocks and machines: barrels, sieves, crucibles, hammers, crooks and watering cans. This section covers how they behave in this pack and what the sources say about powering the mechanical versions.[1][4]

Barrels and witch water

The barrel is where you compost organic material into dirt. The pack has barrels for many wood types, such as the Acacia Barrel, the Cherry Barrel and the Bamboo Barrel.[4][5]

Barrels can also make witch water. Put water in a barrel on top of mycelium, and more mycelium speeds the process up. A barrel with witch water will grow mushrooms on nearby mycelium. Witch water and lava can also make a netherrack generator, similar to a cobblestone generator.[4]

Sieves

Sieves sift items out of soft blocks like gravel and dirt, and they need a mesh to work. Different meshes yield different drops. You can enchant a mesh with Fortune to raise the likelihood of drops, or with Efficiency to sift faster.[4]

Sieves in a 5x5 area can be used simultaneously. The mod's advancement for the string mesh simply tells you to craft one to use in a sieve.[4]

Crucibles

Crucibles come in many wood types, for example the Birch Crucible and the Dark Oak Crucible. The recipe viewer has a Crucible Heat Source category, so heat sources matter for them, but the sources here do not spell out the melting rules. Wooden crucibles can also supply water for filling watering cans.[4][5]

Hammers and crooks

Hammers come in tiers from the Wooden Hammer up to the Netherite Hammer. Each tier has a compressed version that you craft from the normal hammer, such as the Compressed Diamond Hammer. The compressed crushed blocks also unpack back into their crushed form, for example Compressed Crushed Netherrack into Crushed Netherrack.[5]

The Crook doubles sapling drops from leaves. Here is its recipe:[4][5]

CrookMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

4 × any wooden rod

Recipe id: exdeorum:crook

Silk worms have a 1 in 100 chance to drop from leaves harvested with a crook. Use a silk worm on a tree's leaves to infest them, and the infestation gradually spreads through the entire tree. Leaves that are 100% infested can be harvested for string, but they do not drop saplings.[4]

Mechanical machines and power

The Mechanical Hammer hammers blocks without you doing it yourself, and it runs on Forge Energy (FE). It can operate without a hammer, but adding any hammer doubles its speed, and efficiency enchantments on that hammer increase the speed further. It supports three different modes of redstone control.[4]

The Mechanical Sieve sifts blocks for you when it is supplied with a mesh and FE. It also supports three different modes of redstone control.[4]

Watch out: Ex Deorum does not provide a way to generate FE. Both mechanical machines need power from another mod.[4]

Watering cans

Watering cans speed up crop growth, tree growth and grass spreading, among other things. The mod has six tiers of them.[1][4]

  • You can fill a can with water from barrels and wooden crucibles.[4]
  • Golden and above watering cans do not need to be refilled once full.[4]
  • Diamond watering cans water a 3x3 area.[4]
  • Netherite watering cans are usable by machinery.[4]

Spores, seeds and the sculk core

  • Grass seeds turn dirt into a grass block.[4]
  • Mycelium spores turn dirt into mycelium, and turn a cow into a mooshroom.[4]
  • Crimson nylium spores and warped nylium spores turn netherrack into the matching nylium block.[4]
  • A sculk core used on a Sculk Shrieker lets it spawn Wardens. Shriekers placed by players normally cannot, so this is useful for obtaining Sculk items in a SkyBlock world.[4]

Pack changes to Archwood blocks

The pack has changed the recipes for the Archwood barrel, the Archwood sieve and the Cascading Archwood crucible, so do not assume the mod's defaults. These are the exact in-pack recipes:[5]

How do you progress through Ex Deorum?

5 parts

In this pack, Ex Deorum progression runs through the starting-out quest chapter. The quests cover basic tools, barrels, the sieve, a ladder of meshes, hammers and crucibles. Here is how those steps connect.[3]

The sieve and your first seeds

The sieve quest a quest in "?" asks for three things: an Oak Sieve, a String Mesh and gravel. The next quest a quest in "?" wants Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores. In this pack both come from sifting dirt with a mesh.[3][5]

After that, the Witch Water Bucket quest a quest in "?" opens. It needs both the oak barrel quest and the seeds quest finished first.[3]

Mesh tiers

Each mesh is an upgrade of the one before it, and the quests follow that ladder in order:[3][5]

  1. String Mesh, the starting mesh from the sieve quest.[3][5]
  2. Flint Mesh, upgraded from the string mesh a quest in "?".[3][5]
  3. Iron Mesh, upgraded from the flint mesh a quest in "?".[3][5]
  4. Golden Mesh, upgraded from the iron mesh a quest in "?".[3][5]

Hammers and dust

The quest book asks you to make Dust a quest in "?". A hammer makes it by crushing sand or red sand. There is also a Compressed Stone Hammer quest a quest in "?", and that tool is crafted from the regular stone hammer.[3][5]

The pack adds its own compressed hammer recipes too. They turn the 1x, 2x and 3x versions of both sand and red sand into dust. These are pack additions, not mod defaults.[5]

Crucibles

The Oak Crucible has its own quest a quest in "?". The Porcelain Crucible quest a quest in "?" is a separate route. You get the porcelain version by smelting an Unfired Porcelain Crucible.[3][5]

How does Ex Deorum work with other mods?

4 parts

In this pack, Ex Deorum connects to other mods mostly through the sieve. The pack adds many sieve recipes that turn a base block plus a mesh into items from other mods.[5]

The pattern is the same everywhere. You sieve a block (or an Ex Deorum drop like Dust) with a mesh, and the result is an item from another mod. Better meshes unlock more of these drops.[5]

Dirt, dust and gravel

Moss, sand and soul sand

Nether and End materials

The rarest drops come from crushed blocks and need a diamond or netherite mesh. Sieving Crushed Blackstone gives you Allthemodium Nugget and Raw Iesnium. Sieving Crushed End Stone gives you Draconium Dust.[5]

Tip: Every sieve recipe above is added by the pack, not by Ex Deorum itself. The mod's own default recipes only cover items from vanilla Minecraft.[1][5]

Quests

The Ex Deorum quests in the starting chapter only ask for Ex Deorum items and vanilla gravel. One example is a quest in "?", which asks for Oak Sieve, String Mesh and Gravel. The mesh quests then run in a chain: flint, iron, golden, then a quest in "?" for the diamond mesh and a quest in "?" for the netherite mesh. Those are the meshes the other-mod drops above are sieved with.[3][5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Ex Deorum?

4 parts

In this pack, every quest that involves Ex Deorum is in the Starting Out chapter. All of them are item tasks: each one is tied to an Ex Deorum item, and the sieve quest also includes a vanilla item. The quests have no titles, so you identify them by their ids. Several of them continue from quests that aren't listed in the sources, so I can only describe the order between the quests below.[3]

Barrels and water

  1. a quest in "?" has an item task for the Oak Barrel. It is the first barrel step.[3]
  2. a quest in "?" comes right after it and asks for the Stone Barrel.[3]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for the Witch Water Bucket. It needs both the oak barrel quest and the seeds and spores quest (see below) to be done first.[3]

Sieve and spreading seeds

  1. a quest in "?" has three item tasks: the Oak Sieve, the String Mesh and Gravel.[3]
  2. a quest in "?" follows it and asks for Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores.[3]
  3. That quest is one of the two prerequisites for the witch water quest, a quest in "?".[3]

The mesh upgrade line

The meshes form a straight chain, so you complete them in this order:[3]

  1. a quest in "?": Flint Mesh.[3]
  2. a quest in "?": Iron Mesh.[3]
  3. a quest in "?": Golden Mesh.[3]
  4. a quest in "?": Diamond Mesh.[3]
  5. a quest in "?": Netherite Mesh.[3]

Tools and crucibles

Unverified The quests have no titles or descriptions in the sources, and their rewards are not shown. The prerequisite quests outside this list are also not described, so the full chapter order can't be confirmed here.

What changed in Ex Deorum between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships with Ex Deorum 3.7. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so this is the version you get when you play the pack.[2]

Ex Deorum 3.7

  • Fixed Barrel Mixing recipes with a result size greater than 1 only giving one output. If a mixing recipe gave you less than it should, this is the fix.[6]
  • You can now change the drops for Random Armor Trim and Pottery Sherd. Tide was also added to the possible trims.[6]
