What is Ex Deorum?
1 part
Ex Deorum is a port of the 1.7 SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond, and this pack ships version 3.7. Unlike the original mod and its other ports, it includes a SkyBlock world type out of the box. It gives you the tools to turn a tiny island into a full resource supply.[1][2]
All of the mod's recipes exist in data packs, and it has JEI compatibility for all of its blocks. In this pack, check JEI for what a block or mesh does and drops, rather than assuming the mod defaults.[1]
Where the quest book puts it
The Ex Deorum quests in the sources here all sit in "Chapter 1: Starting out". The quests call sieving your most common way of gathering resources in the pack, with the barrel second only to the sieve.[3]
- The Stone Hammer ("Hammer Time!" quest) comes after "All rock, No roll" and breaks cobblestone into something you can sieve. The Compressed Stone Hammer ("Hammering Compressed Items" quest) comes after "Compressed Items" and is a faster route to gravel or sand.[3]
- The Oak Barrel ("Barrel of Laughs" quest) comes after "Chop it like its hot". It makes clay from water, soul sand from witch water, and dirt from saplings and leaves. The Stone Barrel follows it and can hold lava.[3]
- The Crook ("Is that crooked?" quest) also comes after "Chop it like its hot". It improves your odds of saplings and apples from leaves, and it is how you get silkworms for string.[3]
- The Oak Sieve with a String Mesh ("1 Sieve, No flour" quest) comes after "String". The mesh line then runs from Flint Mesh to Iron Mesh, Golden Mesh, Diamond Mesh and Netherite Mesh, each quest after the one before.[3]
- The Oak Crucible ("Oak Crucible" quest) comes after "Leaf it out". The Porcelain Crucible ("All Fired Up" quest) comes after "Bone Meal, Clay" and turns cobblestone and other stone into lava when a heat source is under it.[3]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown in the sources here. Check the pack's quest book for that.
How do you get started with Ex Deorum?
6 parts
Ex Deorum is a skyblock mod: you spawn into a void world and build everything from almost nothing. The first quest chapter walks you through the steps below, so you can follow the quest book alongside this guide.[3][4]
First, make a Crook
Your first target is the Crook ("Is that crooked?" quest). It gives you a much better chance of saplings and apples from leaves, and it's also how you get silkworms. You need those for string, and string is what gets you into sieving.[3]
Silkworms have a 1 in 100 chance to drop from leaves harvested with a Crook. Use one on a tree's leaves and it infests them, spreading through the whole tree. Once leaves are 100% infested you can harvest them for string, but they stop dropping saplings.[4]
Next, build an Oak Barrel
Next comes the Oak Barrel ("Barrel of Laughs" quest). The quest calls it one of the most important ways to get materials, second only to the sieve. It can make clay from water and dirt from saplings and leaves. Watch out, because barrels fill with water when it rains.[3]

Sieve with a String Mesh
Once you have string, make a String Mesh and an Oak Sieve ("1 Sieve, No flour" quest). Sieving is your most common way to gather resources in this pack. A sieve needs a mesh to work, and different meshes give different drops.[3][4]

Upgrade to a Flint Mesh
The Flint Mesh ("Flint Mesh" quest) is your first upgrade, and it's where you start getting real resources. You craft it from the String Mesh you already have.[3][5]

The mesh chain goes on from there: Iron Mesh, then Golden Mesh, then Diamond Mesh, then Netherite Mesh. Lower tier meshes sometimes drop certain loot more often than higher tiers, so check the drop list in JEI. The quest says to press U on the mesh.[3]
Get Grass Seeds and a Crucible
Sieving dirt with a mesh can give you Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores. Right-click dirt with them to turn it into grass or mycelium, and it spreads to surrounding dirt.[3][5]
After that, make an Oak Crucible ("Oak Crucible" quest).[3]
For lava, the Porcelain Crucible ("All Fired Up" quest) turns cobblestone and other stone types into lava when a heat source sits under it. A torch works as the heat source, though it's slow. The Porcelain Crucible is smelted from an Unfired Porcelain Crucible.[3][5]
How does Ex Deorum work?
7 parts
Ex Deorum is a SkyBlock companion mod, and it ships its own void world type, so you can start playing right away. All of its recipes live in data packs, and this pack changes some of them. The sections below cover how barrels, sieves, hammers and the machines that automate them behave in this pack.[1][5]
Barrels
Barrels are where you compost organic material into dirt. Each tick adds a fixed amount of progress, set by server.barrel_progress_step. The pack uses 0.004, which is the mod default, so composting speed is stock here.[4][6]
Barrels also fill with rain while it rains and they are exposed to the sky (server.barrels_collect_rain_water is on). Glass bottles can move water between barrels and water crucibles, because server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is on.[6]
The pack changes the Archwood Barrel recipe from the mod's version, so check the in-pack recipe below if you plan to make one.[5]

This recipe is changed by the pack.
Witch water
You make witch water by putting water in a barrel on top of mycelium. More mycelium speeds it up. A barrel of witch water also grows mushrooms on nearby mycelium.[4]
Entity conversion is enabled in this pack. When a mob steps into witch water it may convert, for example a Villager into a Zombie Villager, a Creeper into a Charged Creeper, or a Squid into a Ghast.[6]
The pack also decides which witch water generators work. The netherrack generator is on, so lava flowing into witch water forms netherrack, like a cobblestone generator. The dirt generator, where flowing water forms dirt, is off.[4][6]
Crucibles
Wooden crucibles collect rain water the same way barrels do, as long as they are open to the sky. You can fill a watering can from a barrel or a wooden crucible.[4][6]
Sieves
Sieves sift items out of soft blocks like gravel and dirt. You need a mesh to use one, and meshes can be enchanted with Fortune (better drop chances) and Efficiency (faster sifting). Different meshes give different drops.[4]
- Simultaneous use: sieves in a 5x5 area work at once. The pack allows this through server.simultaneous_sieve_usage, and the reach is set by server.simultaneous_sieve_range. A value of 2 means 5x5, and 1 would mean 3x3.[4][6]
- Compressed sieves can also be used several at a time in a 3x3 or larger area, since server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage is on.[6]
- Hand-sifting speed: server.sieve_interval is 1 tick, the mod default, and only affects sifting by hand.[6]
- Moss Block drops: server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is on, so moss sieving gives only 1-2 items. This keeps sapling-heavy drop tables from getting spammy.[6]
Hammers and crushed blocks
Hammers come in wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond and netherite tiers. Each tier has a compressed version, made by crafting the normal hammer. Compressed crushed blocks such as Compressed Crushed Netherrack can be crafted back into their regular crushed form.[5]

Automation
Machines and fake players can use the regular sieve, since server.automated_sieves is on. The config notes that the Mechanical Sieve is the intended way to automate. The pack leaves server.nerf_automated_sieves off, so automated sieving isn't restricted from working in a 3x3 or larger.[6]
The Mechanical Sieve sifts blocks for you once it has a mesh and Forge Energy (FE). It supports three redstone control modes. Ex Deorum has no way to generate FE, so you need another mod for power.[4]
The Mechanical Hammer hammers blocks without you, also using FE and the same three redstone modes. It works with no hammer inside, but adding any hammer doubles its speed, and Efficiency on that hammer speeds it up further.[4]
- Mechanical Sieve: uses 40 FE/t while sifting and stores up to 40,000 FE (see server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption and server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage). Both match the mod defaults.[6]
- Mechanical Hammer: uses 20 FE/t while crushing and stores up to 40,000 FE (see server.mechanical_hammer_energy_consumption and server.mechanical_hammer_energy_storage). Both match the mod defaults.[6]
Crooks and silk worms
A Crook doubles sapling drops from leaves. Leaves harvested with a crook have a 1 in 100 chance to drop a silk worm. Using the worm on a tree's leaves infests them, and the infestation gradually spreads through the whole tree. Leaves that are 100% infested can be harvested for string, but they don't drop saplings.[4]
How do you progress through Ex Deorum?
4 parts
The pack's first quest chapter walks you through Ex Deorum: break stone down with hammers, grab barrels and crooks, then climb a ladder of sieve meshes where each tier unlocks better drops.[3]
Early tools and containers
Your first step is the Stone Hammer in "Hammer Time!" quest. You place the block you want to break down and hit it, which turns cobblestone into something you can sieve.[3]
Crafting Shaped

Next come the Oak Barrel and the Crook. The pack calls the barrel one of the most important ways to get materials, second only to the sieve. It makes clay from water, soul sand from witch water, and dirt from saplings and leaves. Barrels fill with water when it rains. The crook gives you a much better chance at saplings and apples from leaves, and it is how you get silkworms, which you need for string.[3]
The Stone Barrel can hold lava, which the wooden barrels can't. The quest says you can use that to make blackstone. For witch water, place a barrel on top of mycelium and fill it with water. The quest for the Witch Water Bucket says to check JEI on the bucket, since witch water can be used to make soul sand, netherrack and blackstone.[3]
"All Fired Up" quest gets you the Porcelain Crucible. It turns cobblestone and other stone types into lava when a heat source sits underneath. A torch works to start with, but it is slow. You make the crucible by smelting the unfired version.[3][5]
Sieving and the mesh ladder
Sieving is your most common way to gather resources here. "1 Sieve, No flour" quest asks for an Oak Sieve, a String Mesh and gravel. You can sieve 25 blocks at a time by placing 25 Oak Sieves in a 5x5 square and right-clicking the middle one. Each sieve in the group needs its own mesh, and all the meshes must be the same tier.[3]
Sieving dirt also gives you Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores. Right-click dirt with either one and it converts to grass or mycelium, then spreads to the surrounding dirt. Every mesh tier from string to netherite has a dirt sieving recipe for both items, and there are compressed-sieve versions too.[3][5]
The meshes then upgrade one step at a time, and each step is a quest. The Flint Mesh in "Flint Mesh" quest is where you start getting actual resources. After that you go Iron ("Iron Mesh" quest), Gold ("Gold Mesh" quest), Diamond ("Diamond Mesh" quest) and finally Netherite Mesh (a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out").[3]

Compressed hammering and dust
"Hammering Compressed Items" quest unlocks a faster way to get gravel or sand: hammering compressed blocks. Normal hammers don't work on them, so you need a Compressed Hammer such as the Compressed Stone Hammer, which is made from the regular Stone Hammer.[3][5]
Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: exdeorum:compressed_stone_hammer
The "Dust" quest quest wants Dust. A hammer turns sand and red sand into it. The pack also adds compressed-hammer recipes that turn sand and red sand in the 1x, 2x and 3x compressed tiers into dust. It adds Create and Mekanism crushing recipes that turn sand into dust as well.[3][5]
Pack changes to know about
The pack changed the recipes for the Archwood Barrel, the Archwood Sieve and the two Archwood crucibles, Flourishing Archwood Crucible and Cascading Archwood Crucible. They use Ars Nouveau archwood, so check JEI for the exact in-pack recipes.[5]
How does Ex Deorum work with other mods?
4 parts
Ex Deorum's own default recipes only cover vanilla Minecraft items. In this pack, most of the crossover with other mods comes from extra sieve recipes the pack adds, so your skyblock sieve ends up feeding materials from lots of other mods into your base.[1][5]
What the sieve gives you from other mods
Every recipe below is a sieve recipe added by the pack. The list shows which input block gives which modded item, and the meshes it works with are the ones in the pack's recipe dump.[5]
- Dirt: sieve it with a Flint, Iron, Golden, Diamond or Netherite mesh to get Canola Seeds, Coffee Beans and Flax Seeds.[5]
- Gravel: with an Iron, Golden, Diamond or Netherite mesh you can get the Create stones Asurine, Crimsite, Ochrum and Veridium, plus Kivi.[5]
- Dust: this is the input for Salt, Sulfur and Arcane Crystal (Iron, Golden, Diamond or Netherite meshes). It is also the input for Blue Xychorium Gem, Dark Xychorium Gem, Green Xychorium Gem, Light Xychorium Gem and Red Xychorium Gem (Flint, Iron, Diamond or Netherite meshes). The recipe dump has no Golden mesh recipe for the gems.[5]
- Moss Block: with an Iron, Golden, Diamond or Netherite mesh you can get Growing Edelwood, Menril Sapling and Flashing Archwood Sapling.[5]
- Sand: Black Quartz and Fluorite come from an Iron, Golden or Diamond mesh. Uraninite only appears in the recipes with a Diamond mesh. Allthemodium Nugget comes from Sand with a Diamond or Netherite mesh.[5]
- Soul Sand: Prosperity Shard comes from an Iron, Golden or Diamond mesh. Soulium Dust only appears with a Diamond mesh.[5]
Example: sieving Dust with a Diamond Mesh to get Salt.
Nether and End materials
The top-tier meshes also unlock sieving of crushed Nether and End blocks. With a Diamond or Netherite mesh, Crushed Blackstone can give Allthemodium Nugget and Raw Iesnium, and Crushed End Stone can give Draconium Dust.[5]

Create crushing
Going the other way, the pack adds a Create crushing recipe that turns Crushed Netherrack into Cinder Flour.[5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Ex Deorum?
3 parts
Every Ex Deorum quest in this pack lives in a single chapter, Chapter 1: Starting out. You'll meet them as you go from your first hammer to the higher mesh tiers. The order below follows each quest's prerequisite.[3]
Hammers, barrels and crooks
- "Hammer Time!" quest asks for a Stone Hammer. It comes after the quest All rock, No roll, and it teaches you to break cobblestone into something you can sieve by placing the block down and hammering it.[3]
- "Barrel of Laughs" quest asks for an Oak Barrel. It comes after the quest Chop it like its hot. The quest text calls the barrel one of the most important ways to get materials, second only to the sieve, and warns that barrels fill with water when it rains.[3]
- "Is that crooked?" quest asks for a Crook. It also comes after Chop it like its hot. The crook improves your chances of saplings and apples from leaves and is how you get silkworms, which you need for string.[3]
- a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" follows the barrel quest and asks for a Stone Barrel. Unlike the wooden ones, it can hold lava.[3]
- "Hammering Compressed Items" quest asks for a Compressed Stone Hammer. It comes after the quest Compressed Items. Hammering compressed blocks is a faster way to get gravel or sand, and normal hammers won't work for it.[3]
Sieving and meshes
"1 Sieve, No flour" quest comes after the quest String. It asks for an Oak Sieve, a String Mesh and gravel. The quest text says sieving is your most common way of gathering resources. It also says you can sieve 25 blocks at a time by placing 25 sieves in a 5x5 square, as long as each sieve has its own mesh and all the meshes are the same tier.[3]
Two quests unlock after the sieve. a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" asks for Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores, which turn dirt into grass or mycelium and spread to surrounding dirt. a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" needs both the barrel quest and the seeds quest, and asks for a Witch Water Bucket. Its text says a barrel placed on mycelium and filled with water makes witch water, which is used for soul sand, netherrack and blackstone.[3]
The mesh upgrades then run as a chain, each one after the last:[3]
- "Flint Mesh" quest asks for a Flint Mesh and comes after the quest On your marks.... It's the first upgrade where you start getting real resources.[3]
- "Iron Mesh" quest asks for an Iron Mesh.[3]
- "Gold Mesh" quest asks for a Golden Mesh.[3]
- "Diamond Mesh" quest asks for a Diamond Mesh.[3]
- a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" asks for a Netherite Mesh.[3]
Crucibles and dust
- "Oak Crucible" quest asks for an Oak Crucible and comes after the quest Leaf it out.[3]
- "All Fired Up" quest asks for a Porcelain Crucible and comes after the quests Bone Meal and Clay. It turns cobblestone and other stone types into lava when a heat source is underneath, and a torch works to start with, though slowly. The quest jokes that you'll end up with 20 of them in your base.[3]
- "Dust" quest asks for Dust and comes after the quest Sand.[3]
Which Ex Deorum config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.2.1 guide
Ex Deorum's settings for this pack live in one file, config/exdeorum-server.toml. Here are the options you'll most likely notice while playing, and how the pack sets them. Every option below that lists a mod default matches that default, so the pack changed none of those values.[7]
Starting kit and spawn tree
- server.starting_torch is true, so you start a void world with a torch.[1][7]
- server.starting_watering_can is true, so you also start with a full wooden watering can.[1][7]
- server.use_biome_appropriate_tree is false, so the spawn tree is always an oak.[7]
- server.default_spawn_tree_feature is minecraft:oak_tree_bees_005, which is also the default the config comment describes.[7]
Sieves
- server.sieve_interval is 1, the mod default. It's the minimum number of ticks between two sifts by hand, and it only affects hand sifting.[7]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_usage and server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage are both true, so you can use several sieves at once in a 3x3 or larger area.[7]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_range is 2, the mod default, which means a maximum of 5x5 sieves at once.[7]
- server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is true, so Moss Block sieve drops are restricted to 1-2 items.[7]
- server.automated_sieves is true, so machines and fake players can interact with the Sieve. server.nerf_automated_sieves is false, so they aren't restricted from sieving in a 3x3 or larger. The config notes that the intended automation method is the Mechanical Sieve.[7]
Mechanical machines
The mechanical hammer uses 20 FE/t (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_consumption) and holds up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_storage). The mechanical sieve uses 40 FE/t (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption) and also holds up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage). All four are the mod defaults.[7]
Water, composting and Witch Water
- server.barrels_collect_rain_water and server.crucibles_collect_rain_water are both true, so barrels and wooden crucibles fill with rain when exposed to the sky.[7]
- server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is true, so glass bottles can move water between water crucibles and barrels.[7]
- server.barrel_progress_step is 0.004, the mod default. It's the composting progress added per tick.[7]
- server.allow_witch_water_entity_conversion is true, so entities that step into Witch Water can convert. For example, a Villager becomes a Zombie Villager and a Creeper becomes a Charged Creeper.[7]
- server.witch_water_netherrack_generator is true, so Witch Water forms netherrack when lava flows into it. server.witch_water_dirt_generator is false, so the dirt version of the generator doesn't work.[7]
Unverified The pack's file only lists a mod default for some options, such as the sieve range, the mechanical machine energy values and the barrel progress step. For the true/false options without a listed default, such as the dirt generator or the nerfed automated sieves, we can't confirm from these sources whether the pack changed them.
