What is Ex Deorum?
1 part
Ex Deorum is a port of the classic SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond, and this pack ships version 3.8 of it. Instead of mining, you get your resources by processing blocks: breaking leaves, sifting dirt and crushing rocks. The mod also includes a SkyBlock world type out of the box.[1][2]
If you're starting from a tiny island and want a gentle, step-by-step way to build up materials, this is the mod that gets you going. Its early quests sit in Chapter 1, and a Crushed Endstone quest shows up later in Chapter 2.[1][3][4]
How it fits your early progression
- Make a Crook and break leaves to get saplings and Silkworms. Throw the silkworms on leaves to infest them, then break the infested leaves for string ("Infesting our Trees" quest).[3]
- Set up an Oak Sieve with a String Mesh. Sieves are how you get most of your resources ("Sieves and Meshes" quest).[3]
- Use a Stone Hammer to crush blocks into sieve-friendly forms ("Hammers" quest). Sieving dirt also gives you Grass Seeds ("Grass Seeds" quest).[3]
- Sieve for Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk. Four chunks make one Raw Ore Block ("Ore Chunks" quest).[3]
- Upgrade your mesh, starting with the Flint Mesh. Better meshes change both the drops and the drop rates ("Upgraded Meshes" quest).[3]
- Craft Porcelain Clay Balls for a Porcelain Bucket and a Porcelain Crucible. The crucible cooks blocks into lava ("Porcelain Clay" quest).[3]
The mod also adds a watering can as an alternative to bone meal, in six tiers, and it has JEI support for all of its blocks.[1]
Unverified The mod's default is to hand you a wooden watering can and a torch at world start, and both are configurable. We couldn't confirm what this pack does with those settings.
How do you get started with Ex Deorum?
3 parts
You start in a SkyBlock void world, so almost everything in this pack comes from sieving, hammering and barrels. The mod also gives you a wooden watering can and a torch when the world starts, and the mod's description says both are configurable.[1][5]
The first quest chapter, Chapter 1: Starting out, walks you through the early game in roughly the order below.[3]
Your first steps, in order
- Make a Crook (quest "Infesting our Trees" quest). Breaking leaves with it doubles sapling drops and gives you a chance at a Silkworm. The recipe is shown below.[3][5]
- Throw a silkworm onto leaves to infest them. The infestation spreads through the tree, and the white leaves drop string when you break them. Silkworms have a 1 in 100 chance to drop from leaves harvested with a crook, so keep at it. Fully infested leaves don't drop saplings.[3][5]
- Get an Oak Barrel (quest "(Oak) Barrel" quest). It mixes items with liquids, and rain fills it with water. Don't use a wooden barrel for lava mixing, because it will burn.[3]
- Get an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh (quest "Sieves and Meshes" quest). A sieve does nothing without a mesh. Right click the sieve with the mesh to insert it, or Shift Right Click to take it out. Sieves next to each other work at the same time, up to a 5x5 area.[3][5]
- Sieve dirt for Grass Seeds (quest "Grass Seeds" quest). Use the seeds on dirt to turn it into grass. Mycelium Spores also come from dirt, but only rarely.[3][5]
- Shift Right Click the top of a grass block to get Stone Pebble (quest "Digging through Grass" quest). Pressing K while hovering over pebbles in your inventory combines them into the matching stone.[3]
- Make a Stone Hammer (quest "Hammers" quest). Rocks are too hard to pass through a sieve, so you break blocks with the hammer to get crushed versions of them.[3]
- Upgrade your mesh, starting with the Flint Mesh (quest "Upgraded Meshes" quest). A better mesh changes both the drops and the drop rate, and the quest suggests checking JEI for the details.[3]
- Sieve for Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk (quest "Ore Chunks" quest). You get chunks rather than full raw ore, and pressing K over the chunks in your inventory combines them instantly.[3]
Your first tool: it gives more saplings and a chance at silkworms.
Water and lava
Once you have clay, the Porcelain Clay quest ("Porcelain Clay" quest) gives you Porcelain Clay Ball. You then use it for a Porcelain Bucket and a Porcelain Crucible. For water, an Oak Crucible filled with leaves is much quicker than waiting for rain (quest "Water from Leaves" quest).[3]
Hammering in bulk
You will need a lot of gravel, sand and dust. A Compressed Stone Hammer hammers compressed blocks as if they were normal ones, so you process 9x more at a time (quest "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest). Compressed cobble gives 9 gravel with it. The in-pack recipe is below.[3]

In this pack the compressed hammer is crafted from a Stone Hammer.
How does Ex Deorum work?
6 parts
Ex Deorum is a SkyBlock companion mod, and in this pack you start in a void world. The mod's systems are mostly hand-driven blocks (barrels, crucibles and sieves), plus two Forge Energy machines that automate hammering and sifting. Everything below reflects this pack's config.[1][5][7]
The pack leaves the starting kit on: you spawn with a torch and a full wooden watering can, according to server.starting_torch and server.starting_watering_can.[7]
Barrels
Barrels compost organic material into dirt. The composting speed is set by server.barrel_progress_step, which the pack keeps at the mod default of 0.004 progress per tick.[5][7]
Barrels fill with rain while it's raining and the barrel is open to the sky, because server.barrels_collect_rain_water is on. Glass bottles can also move water between water crucibles and barrels, since server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is on. Wooden crucibles collect rain too, via server.crucibles_collect_rain_water.[7]
Barrels come in many wood types, such as the Acacia Barrel and Bamboo Barrel. The pack changed the Archwood version, which uses Ars Nouveau planks and slabs.[6]

Witch water
Witch water is made by putting water in a barrel on top of mycelium, and more mycelium speeds it up. A barrel of witch water also grows mushrooms on nearby mycelium. Witch water and lava make a netherrack generator, similar to a cobblestone generator.[5]
In this pack the netherrack generator is enabled (server.witch_water_netherrack_generator). The dirt generator, where flowing water forms dirt, is disabled (server.witch_water_dirt_generator).[7]
Sieves and meshes
Sieves sift items out of soft blocks like gravel and dirt, and they need a mesh to work. Different meshes give different drops. You can enchant a mesh with Fortune for better drop chances and Efficiency for faster sifting. Sieves also come in many wood types, like the Birch Sieve and Cherry Sieve.[5][6]
Sieves within a 5x5 area can be used at the same time. The pack enables this with server.simultaneous_sieve_usage and a range of 2 in server.simultaneous_sieve_range. A range of 1 would mean 3x3 and a range of 3 would mean 7x7. Compressed sieves can be used together the same way (server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage).[5][7]
Hand-sifting has a minimum wait between operations, set by server.sieve_interval at 1 tick. server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is on, so moss block sieving is limited to 1-2 items per sift.[7]
Automation
Ex Deorum has two machines, the Mechanical Sieve and the Mechanical Hammer. Both run on Forge Energy (FE), and both support three redstone control modes. The mod can't generate FE itself, so you need another mod for power.[5]
- The Mechanical Sieve sifts blocks for you. It needs a mesh and FE.[5]
- The Mechanical Hammer hammers blocks without you. It works with no hammer inside, but any hammer doubles the speed, and Efficiency enchantments on that hammer speed it up further.[5]
- Energy use in this pack: the Mechanical Hammer uses 20 FE/t while crushing and the Mechanical Sieve uses 40 FE/t while sifting. Each stores up to 40,000 FE. These match the mod defaults.[7]
Plain sieves can also be worked by machines or fake players, because server.automated_sieves is on. The config notes that the Mechanical Sieve is the intended automation method. server.nerf_automated_sieves is off here, so automated sieving isn't restricted from working in a 3x3 or larger area.[7]
Hammers, crooks and other tools
Hammers come in tiers from the Wooden Hammer up to the Netherite Hammer, and each has a compressed version. The recipe for the compressed Diamond Hammer takes the normal Diamond Hammer as its input.[6]
Crafting Shaped
9 × Diamond Hammer
Recipe id: exdeorum:compressed_diamond_hammer
The Crook doubles sapling drops from leaves. Leaves harvested with a crook have a 1 in 100 chance to drop a silk worm. Use the worm on a tree's leaves and the infestation gradually spreads through the whole tree. Leaves that are 100% infested give string but no saplings.[5]
Watering cans speed up crop growth, tree growth and grass spreading. You can fill them from barrels and wooden crucibles. Golden and higher cans don't need refilling once full. Diamond cans water a 3x3 area, and Netherite cans can be used by machinery.[5]
Crushed materials in this pack
The pack adds decompression recipes that turn the 1x compressed forms back into Crushed Netherrack, Crushed Deepslate, Crushed End Stone, Crushed Blackstone and Dust. These recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[6]
How do you progress through Ex Deorum?
6 parts
Ex Deorum progression in this pack is a ladder of meshes and hammered blocks, and the quest book walks you up it. You start with almost nothing and finish with End access, the Warden and the best sieve drops.[3][4]
Tier 1: Wood, string and the first sieve
The first Ex Deorum step is "(Oak) Barrel" quest. The Oak Barrel mixes items with liquids, and rain fills it with water. For lava you need a stone barrel, because wooden ones burn.[3]
Next is "Infesting our Trees" quest. A Crook makes leaves drop extra saplings and Silkworm. Throw a silkworm on leaves to infest them, then break the white leaves to get string.[3]
String lets you finish "Sieves and Meshes" quest. Craft an Oak Sieve and put an String Mesh in it by right-clicking. Shift-right-click takes the mesh back out. Sieves placed next to each other work at the same time, up to a 5x5 area.[3]
"Ore Chunks" quest is your first metal. Sieving gives Iron Ore Chunk and Copper Ore Chunk rather than full raw ore. Four chunks make 1 raw ore block, and pressing K over them in your inventory combines them instantly.[3]
Tier 2: Hammers and dirt
Hard blocks won't pass through a sieve, so "Hammers" quest has you get a Stone Hammer. Breaking blocks with it gives crushed versions. The quest book then asks for Dust, Crushed Blackstone and Crushed Deepslate as hammer follow-ups.[3]
Shift-right-clicking the top of a grass block gives pebbles, which is the "Digging through Grass" quest quest. Four pebbles combine into the matching stone.[3]
Sieved dirt gives Grass Seeds, which turn any dirt into grass. It also rarely gives Mycelium Spores, which turn dirt or grass into mycelium. See "Grass Seeds" quest and "Bring on the Mold!" quest. Mycelium leads to "Witch Water" quest: put water in a barrel above a mycelium block.[3]
Tier 3: Porcelain, water and lava
"Porcelain Clay" quest unlocks the Porcelain Bucket and the Porcelain Crucible, which are "Porcelain Bucket" quest and "Porcelain Crucible" quest. The porcelain bucket handles water fine but breaks after you place lava.[3]
Put the porcelain crucible over a heat source and add blocks like stone or netherrack to cook them into lava. Lava beats fire, and fire beats lanterns. That gives you "Lava" quest with the Porcelain Lava Bucket. You can't make infinite lava sources, but you can keep making more.[3]
For water, "Water from Leaves" quest has you throw leaves into an Oak Crucible and wait, which is much quicker than waiting for rain. Then "Water" quest covers the Porcelain Water Bucket and the infinite source trick of two water sources placed diagonally in a 2x2 area.[3]
Tier 4: Better meshes
"Upgraded Meshes" quest introduces the Flint Mesh. Better meshes change both what drops and how often. You craft the flint mesh by upgrading a string mesh.[3][6]

Scaling up with compressed blocks
"Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest has you combine 9 hammers into a Compressed Stone Hammer. It hammers compressed blocks as if they were normal ones, and compressed cobble gives 9 gravel.[3]
Crafting Shaped
9 × Stone Hammer
Recipe id: exdeorum:compressed_stone_hammer
The pack adds its own compressed hammer recipes for All the Compressed blocks, such as sand, red sand, end stone, blackstone and cobbled deepslate. These give dust or crushed blocks. The pack also adds Create crushing recipes that turn sand into dust and blackstone, end stone and deepslate blocks into their crushed forms. It also changed the All the Compressed decompress recipes for the crushed blocks and dust.[6]
Chapter 2: The Cool Parts
Sieving Dust gives Sky Stone Dust, which you need for your presses. See "Sky Stone" quest. Smelt the dust to get Sky Stone.[4]
"Crushed Blackstone" quest with cheap meshes only gives a few Nether or black items, like magma and black dye. It can also give ancient debris. A higher mesh improves that very low chance only slightly.[4]
"Crushed Endstone" quest gives ender pearls, eyes of ender, chorus fruit and flowers, and better items once you have diamond and netherite meshes. Those eyes lead to the End Cake, which teleports you to The End in "Getting to The End" quest. The quest recommends taking a Waystone so teleporting between the two is much easier.[4]

"The best Meshes!" quest is the payoff for the diamond and netherite meshes. It lists Draconium Dust and Deep Dark items from end stone, Soulium from soul sand, Urananite from sand, and Isneium from blackstone. AllTheModium nuggets drop from both sand and blackstone. This quest comes after the Netherite Upgrade Template and Netherite Ingot quests.[4]
"Spawning The Warden" quest ends the line. The Sculk Core goes on an unnatural sculk shrieker so it can spawn the Warden. You can get sculk shriekers from sieving, and they spread from sound like normal ones.[4]
How does Ex Deorum work with other mods?
4 parts
Ex Deorum is the heart of this pack's skyblock progression, and the pack wires it into a lot of other mods. Most of the links are sieve recipes that the pack adds, so sieving dirt, gravel, sand, dust, moss blocks or soul sand can give you items from other mods. The rest are a Create crushing recipe and compress/decompress recipes for crushed blocks.[6]
What the sieve gives you from other mods
Each of these is an Ex Deorum sieve recipe added by the pack. You put the block in an Oak Sieve with the right mesh installed. The quest "Upgraded Meshes" quest explains that a better mesh means better drops, and that both the drops and the drop rate change with the mesh.[3][6]
- Dirt: Canola Seeds, Coffee Beans and Flax Seeds. This works with every mesh from Flint Mesh up to Netherite Mesh, including the iron, golden and diamond ones.[6]
- Gravel: Asurine, Crimsite, Ochrum, Veridium and Kivi. You need at least an Iron Mesh, and the golden and diamond meshes work too.[6]
- Dust: Salt, Sulfur and Arcane Crystal come from the iron, golden, diamond and netherite meshes. The Xychorium gems (Blue Xychorium Gem, Dark Xychorium Gem, Green Xychorium Gem, Light Xychorium Gem and Red Xychorium Gem) come from the flint, iron, diamond and netherite meshes.[6]
- Sand: Black Quartz and Fluorite come from the iron, golden and diamond meshes. Uraninite and Allthemodium Nugget only show up with the Diamond Mesh.[6]
- Moss block: Growing Edelwood, Menril Sapling and Flashing Archwood Sapling come from the iron, golden and diamond meshes.[6]
- Soul sand: Prosperity Shard comes from the iron, golden and diamond meshes. Soulium Dust only comes from the diamond mesh.[6]
- Crushed Blackstone gives Allthemodium Nugget with the diamond or netherite mesh, and Crushed End Stone gives Draconium Dust with the same meshes.[6]
Sky Stone and Applied Energistics
The quest "Sky Stone" quest tells you to sieve Dust to get Sky Stone Dust. You need that dust for your presses, and you can also use it in other recipes or smelt it into Sky Stone.[4]
Create crushing
The pack adds a Create crushing recipe that turns Crushed Netherrack into Cinder Flour.[6]
Crushing (create)
Recipe id: allthemods:create/crushing/crushed_netherrack
Compressed versions of crushed blocks
The pack changes the recipes that compress and decompress Ex Deorum's crushed blocks and dust. Crushed Blackstone, Crushed Deepslate, Crushed End Stone, Crushed Netherrack and Dust each have a 1x compressed version, for example Dust 1x. A shapeless recipe turns each one back into the normal item.[6]
To process compressed blocks faster, "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest has you combine 9 hammers into a Compressed Stone Hammer. It breaks compressed blocks as if they were normal ones, and Compressed Cobble gives 9 gravel.[3]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Ex Deorum?
2 parts
Ex Deorum quests in this pack live in two chapters: Chapter 1: Starting out, which walks you through the whole sieve-and-crucible loop, and Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, which covers the late-game sieve rewards. The order below follows each quest's prerequisites.[3][4]
Chapter 1: Starting out
You begin with wood-based tools. "Infesting our Trees" quest asks for a Crook, a Silkworm and string. Breaking leaves with the crook drops silkworms, and throwing a silkworm on leaves infests them so they spread and give you string. "(Oak) Barrel" quest asks for the Oak Barrel, which mixes items with liquids. The quest warns that wooden barrels burn, so use a stone one for lava.[3]
"Sieves and Meshes" quest comes after the silkworm quest and asks for an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh. Sieves need a mesh to work, and sieves placed next to each other work at the same time, up to a 5x5 area. "Ore Chunks" quest follows and asks for an Iron Ore Chunk and a Copper Ore Chunk. Four chunks make 1 raw ore block. "Upgraded Meshes" quest asks for a Flint Mesh, because better meshes mean better drops and drop rates.[3]
"Digging through Grass" quest asks for a Stone Pebble. Shift-right-click the top of a grass block to get pebbles. Sieving dirt is the next step. "Grass Seeds" quest asks for Grass Seeds, and "Bring on the Mold!" quest asks for Mycelium Spores, which come rarely from sieved dirt. Once you have both spores and a barrel, "Witch Water" quest asks for a Porcelain Witch Water Bucket.[3]
The hammer branch starts with "Hammers" quest, which asks for a Stone Hammer. Hammers turn blocks into crushed versions that fit through a sieve. Three quests without titles come after it. a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" (hammer sand) asks for Dust, a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" (hammer blackstone) asks for Crushed Blackstone, and a quest in "Chapter 1: Starting out" (hammer deepslate) asks for Crushed Deepslate. "Crushing Compressed Blocks" quest then asks for a Compressed Stone Hammer to hammer compressed blocks. Compressed cobble gives 9 gravel.[3]
The porcelain branch begins with "Porcelain Clay" quest and its Porcelain Clay Ball. From there you can pick two goals. "Porcelain Bucket" quest asks for a Porcelain Bucket, and "Porcelain Crucible" quest asks for a Porcelain Crucible. The crucible sits above a heat source and turns blocks such as stone or netherrack into lava. With both done, "Lava" quest asks for a Porcelain Lava Bucket. The quest warns that porcelain buckets break after placing lava, but water is fine.[3]
For water, "Water from Leaves" quest asks for an Oak Crucible, which you fill by throwing leaves in. Then "Water" quest asks for a Porcelain Water Bucket and needs both the porcelain bucket and the leaves quest done first.[3]
Chapter 2: The Cool Parts
Three quests open this chapter together: "Crushed Endstone" quest for Crushed End Stone, "Sky Stone" quest for Dust plus Sky Stone Dust (needed for presses), and "Crushed Blackstone" quest for Crushed Blackstone, where Ancient Debris is a very low chance that improves slightly with better meshes.[4]
After the crushed end stone quest, "Getting to The End" quest asks for an End Cake, which teleports you to The End. "The best Meshes!" quest asks for a Diamond Mesh and a Netherite Mesh. It unlocks the best sieve drops and unlocks after the Netherite Upgrade Template and Netherite Ingot quests. The final quest, "Spawning The Warden" quest, follows the Deep Dark Items quest and asks for a Sculk Shrieker and a Sculk Core, which lets you spawn The Warden.[4]
Which Ex Deorum config options matter?
4 parts
Ex Deorum's settings for this pack live in one file, config/exdeorum-server.toml. Here are the options you'll most likely notice while playing, and how the pack sets them. Every option below that lists a mod default matches that default, so the pack changed none of those values.[7]
Starting kit and spawn tree
- server.starting_torch is true, so you start a void world with a torch.[1][7]
- server.starting_watering_can is true, so you also start with a full wooden watering can.[1][7]
- server.use_biome_appropriate_tree is false, so the spawn tree is always an oak.[7]
- server.default_spawn_tree_feature is minecraft:oak_tree_bees_005, which is also the default the config comment describes.[7]
Sieves
- server.sieve_interval is 1, the mod default. It's the minimum number of ticks between two sifts by hand, and it only affects hand sifting.[7]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_usage and server.simultaneous_compressed_sieve_usage are both true, so you can use several sieves at once in a 3x3 or larger area.[7]
- server.simultaneous_sieve_range is 2, the mod default, which means a maximum of 5x5 sieves at once.[7]
- server.limit_moss_sieve_drops is true, so Moss Block sieve drops are restricted to 1-2 items.[7]
- server.automated_sieves is true, so machines and fake players can interact with the Sieve. server.nerf_automated_sieves is false, so they aren't restricted from sieving in a 3x3 or larger. The config notes that the intended automation method is the Mechanical Sieve.[7]
Mechanical machines
The mechanical hammer uses 20 FE/t (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_consumption) and holds up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_hammer_energy_storage). The mechanical sieve uses 40 FE/t (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption) and also holds up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage). All four are the mod defaults.[7]
Water, composting and Witch Water
- server.barrels_collect_rain_water and server.crucibles_collect_rain_water are both true, so barrels and wooden crucibles fill with rain when exposed to the sky.[7]
- server.allow_water_bottle_transfer is true, so glass bottles can move water between water crucibles and barrels.[7]
- server.barrel_progress_step is 0.004, the mod default. It's the composting progress added per tick.[7]
- server.allow_witch_water_entity_conversion is true, so entities that step into Witch Water can convert. For example, a Villager becomes a Zombie Villager and a Creeper becomes a Charged Creeper.[7]
- server.witch_water_netherrack_generator is true, so Witch Water forms netherrack when lava flows into it. server.witch_water_dirt_generator is false, so the dirt version of the generator doesn't work.[7]
Unverified The pack's file only lists a mod default for some options, such as the sieve range, the mechanical machine energy values and the barrel progress step. For the true/false options without a listed default, such as the dirt generator or the nerfed automated sieves, we can't confirm from these sources whether the pack changed them.
