Ex Deorum is a mod in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, where it is version 1.53. Port of the original Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Ex Deorum?

2 parts

Ex Deorum is a port of the old SkyBlock companion mod Ex Nihilo to 1.20 and beyond. Unlike the original and its other ports, it ships with a SkyBlock world type out of the box. All of its recipes live in data packs, so a pack can change them. It also adds a watering can item with six tiers, as an alternative to bone meal. This pack runs version 1.53.[1][2]

Where the quest book puts it

Ex Deorum is taught in the chapter "The Beginning", in the Storyline group. It is chapter 4 of 44 in the book and holds 58 quests. After the opening "Welcome" quest quest, "Where it all began" quest leads to the "Barrel" quest quest for the Oak Barrel and to "The Crook" quest for the Crook.[3]

"Hammers" quest asks for the Stone Hammer and comes after Pebbles. "The Sieve" quest asks for the Oak Sieve and a String Mesh, and comes after the String quest. The Crucible quests ask for the Oak Crucible and later the Porcelain Crucible.[3]

From the sieve, the mesh quests run in a line: "Flint Mesh" quest, "Iron Mesh" quest, "Gold Mesh" quest, "Diamond Mesh" quest and a quest in "The Beginning". After the Netherite Mesh the chain goes on to an Allthemodium Mesh quest and then a Vibranium Mesh quest.[3]

Automation starts early. The quest titled a quest in "The Beginning" asks for the Mechanical Sieve and the Mechanical Hammer and comes after The Sieve. The Auto Sieve quest follows it and includes an Cobalt Ore Chunk among its tasks.[3]

Other chapters that mention it

  • "Masterful Machinery" (Production group, chapter 25 of 44) has a quest for the Mechanical Sieve and one for the Mechanical Hammer, both after the Priority Setter quest.[4]
  • "Kill Trophies" (Challenges group, chapter 43 of 44) has a a quest in "Kill Trophies" quest that asks for the Sculk Core. Part of that chapter's quest text is in the quest book itself.[5]

How do you get started with Ex Deorum?

5 parts

Ex Deorum includes a SkyBlock void world type. In this pack common.set_void_world_as_default is false, so the void world is not preselected in world creation. Players in a void world start with a torch (server.starting_torch is true) but not with a watering can (server.starting_watering_can is false).[1][6][7]

Barrel and Crook

The quest "Where it all began" quest asks for 8 oak logs, and it unlocks both the "Barrel" quest quest and "The Crook" quest. The barrel composts organic material into dirt, so it is how you get your first real blocks.[3][8]

Hammers and dust

The "Pebbles" quest quest asks for 64 Botania pebbles and 16 cobblestone. It leads to "Hammers" quest, which wants a Stone Hammer, and then to "Gravel, Sand, Dust" quest, which asks for 8 gravel, 8 sand and 8 Dust. The pack changed the hammer recipe that turns sand into dust.[3][9]

The pack adds its own sieve drops. Dirt can give Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores (see the a quest in "The Beginning" quest, which follows the Dirt quest), and gravel can give an Aluminum Ore Chunk. Crushed Netherrack can give a Cobalt Ore Chunk.[3][9]

You can use several sieves at once: server.simultaneous_sieve_usage is on, and server.simultaneous_sieve_range is 2, which means up to 5x5 sieves.[6]

Crucibles

The "Crucible" quest quest comes after "Leaf me alone", which in turn follows the Shears quest. It asks you for an Oak Crucible, and the Water, Lava and Heat quests follow it.[3][9]

Later, the Clay quest (after the Barrel quest) leads to "Crucible" quest, which wants a Porcelain Crucible. The Porcelain Clay Ball and the finished crucible each have their own recipe below, and the Unfired Porcelain Crucible is the item that gets fired. Besides the normal smelting, the pack adds an Ender IO alloy smelting recipe for the same step.[3][9]

Early automation

The quest a quest in "The Beginning" ("Early sieve automation") comes after The Sieve and asks for a Mechanical Sieve and a Mechanical Hammer. The pack changed both recipes, and it also adds a second route to the Mechanical Sieve from a KubeJS item.[3][9]

In this pack the Mechanical Sieve uses 40 FE/t and the Mechanical Hammer uses 20 FE/t. Both can store 40,000 FE.[6]

Watch out: Plain sieves cannot be automated here: server.automated_sieves is false. The intended automation method is the Mechanical Sieve.[6]

How does Ex Deorum work?

6 parts

Ex Deorum is built around sieves, barrels and crucibles, plus hammers and a crook. All of its recipes live in data packs, and this pack edits a good number of them, so what follows describes the pack's version of each system.[1][9]

Barrels, sieves, crucibles and compressed sieves come in many wood and material variants, such as Oak, Acacia, Crimson, Warped, Bamboo and Cherry, plus modded woods. You can see the full list in the mod's block names.[8]

Sieves

Sieve meshes come in tiers, including the String Mesh, Flint Mesh, Golden Mesh and Diamond Mesh. The two upgrade recipes are shown below.[9]

This pack adds its own dirt sieve drops for the string mesh through a script. Each drop is a single roll with a set chance: potato and carrot are 0.15, wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, beetroot seeds, bamboo, sugar cane, kelp, cactus, grass seeds and mycelium spores are 0.25, a menril sapling is 0.10 and a golden carrot is only 0.01.[10]

The pack also adds sieve recipes for ore chunks: gravel gives an Aluminum Ore Chunk and Crushed Netherrack gives a Boron Ore Chunk.[9]

Which ore item Ex Deorum recipes produce for each metal is set in common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_aluminum_ore and its sibling options. In this pack aluminum, cobalt, iridium, platinum and zinc point at Common Ore Library items, lead, nickel, silver and tin at Thermal, and osmium and uranium at Mekanism. Boron, lithium, magnesium and thorium are left on air, which means the mod picks alphabetically by mod name.[7]

Sifting faster

Watch out: Automated sieving is off here: server.automated_sieves is false, so machines and fake players cannot interact with a normal Sieve. The intended automation is the Mechanical Sieve. The nerf option for automated sieves does nothing while automated sieves are disabled.[6]

The Mechanical Sieve uses 40 FE/t while sifting (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_consumption). Its energy storage holds up to 40,000 FE (server.mechanical_sieve_energy_storage).[6]

Hammers

Hammers break blocks down into finer ones. In this pack the hammer recipes shown give a result amount of 2.0, and these are the conversions I can confirm:[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

The pack also adds hammer recipes for compressed blocks. Compressed blackstone gives Compressed Crushed Blackstone, and a 1x compressed end stone block from Compressium gives Compressed Crushed End Stone.[9][19][20]

If you have EnderIO or Mekanism, the pack also gives Dust from sand in a SAG Mill or a Mekanism crusher, and the SAG Mill turns a 1x compressed end stone block into Crushed End Stone.[9]

Barrels, water and Witch Water

Barrels compost organic material into dirt. Composting progresses by 0.004 each tick (server.barrel_progress_step). Barrels also fill with rain when exposed to the sky, and so do wooden crucibles. Glass bottles can move water between water crucibles and barrels.[6][8]

The Acacia Barrel is one of many barrel variants.

Barrels can also mix fluids with items. The pack adds one such recipe: compressed dust plus 1,000 mB of water makes a 1x compressed clay block from Compressium.[21]

Witch Water is enabled with entity conversion, so mobs that step into it can transform, for example a Skeleton into a Wither Skeleton or a Creeper into a Charged Creeper. Lava flowing into Witch Water forms netherrack, giving you a netherrack generator. The dirt generator is switched off in this pack.[6]

Crook and silk worms

Silk worms are the route to string. The pack changed the crook drop so that breaking leaves with a Crook has a 0.05 chance of giving a Silk Worm. Fully infested leaves have a 0.08 chance. You infest a tree with a worm to get string.[8][9][22][23]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: exdeorum:crook

A silk worm can also be cooked into a Cooked Silk Worm in a furnace, on a campfire, or in an EnderIO alloy smelter (the last recipe was added by the pack).[9]

Void world settings

The pack leaves common.set_void_world_as_default, common.void_nether_generation and common.void_end_generation all false. Players in a void world start with a torch, but not with a watering can. The spawn tree is a plain oak, since server.use_biome_appropriate_tree is false.[6][7]

How do you progress through Ex Deorum?

6 parts

Ex Deorum's questline lives in the chapter "The Beginning", part of the Storyline group of the quest book. It opens with "Welcome" quest and splits into a few branches: wood and barrels, hammers and sieves, and crucibles. Follow them in order and you climb a ladder of meshes, barrels and automation.[3][9]

Early game: hammers, barrels and the sieve

  1. "Where it all began" quest asks for 8 oak logs. It unlocks "Barrel" quest (Oak Barrel) and "The Crook" quest (Crook).[3][9]
  2. "Pebbles" quest leads to "Hammers" quest, which wants a Stone Hammer. After that, "Gravel, Sand, Dust" quest asks for 8 gravel, 8 sand and 8 Dust.[3][9]
  3. The Crook branch continues to "String" quest and then "The Sieve" quest, which asks for an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh.[3][9]

The pack sets its own hammer recipes. Hammering sand or red sand gives Dust, hammering cobblestone, diorite, granite or andesite gives gravel, and hammering gravel gives sand. Each of these has a result amount of 2.0.[14][15][17]

The pack also changed the crook. Breaking any leaves with it has a 0.05 chance to give a Silk Worm, and fully infested leaves have a 0.08 chance.[22][23]

The mesh ladder

After The Sieve, the quest book walks you up the meshes one step at a time: "Flint Mesh" quest, "Iron Mesh" quest, "Gold Mesh" quest, "Diamond Mesh" quest and a quest in "The Beginning". Two pack-specific meshes follow: a quest in "The Beginning" and then a quest in "The Beginning". The first meshes are crafted as upgrades of the previous one, and these are the recipes.[3][9]

Unverified The recipes for the Allthemodium and Vibranium meshes are not in the material this guide was built from, so check JEI for them. The same goes for exactly which mesh gets which sieve drop. This site does hold Project Infinity 0.1's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

The pack runs a script that removes Ex Deorum's default sieve recipes and its compressed sieve recipes, and it adds its own sieve recipes. Sieving dirt can give Grass Seeds and Mycelium Spores (see "Dirt" quest and a quest in "The Beginning"). Sieving Crushed Netherrack can give a Cobalt Ore Chunk, and sieving gravel can give an Aluminum Ore Chunk.[3][9][24]

Compressed materials

The pack lets you hammer Compressium blocks directly into compressed Ex Deorum materials, again with a result amount of 2.0: Compressed Crushed Blackstone, Compressed Crushed End Stone, Compressed Crushed Netherrack and Compressed Dust.[19][20][25][26]

Automation

a quest in "The Beginning" is labelled "Early sieve automation". It asks for the Mechanical Sieve and the Mechanical Hammer and sits after The Sieve. The pack changed both crafting recipes, and it also lets you craft the sieve from a KubeJS Auto Mechanical Sieve.[3][9]

How does Ex Deorum work with other mods?

5 parts

The pack ties Ex Deorum into a lot of other mods. Most of the links are sieve drops, ore chunk processing and a few upgrade recipes, so you will keep coming back to your sieve and hammer. The quest book introduces the mod in the "The Beginning" chapter of the Storyline group.[3][9]

Sieve drops from other mods

The pack adds sieve recipes so Ex Deorum blocks drop items from other mods. Dust gives Certus Quartz Dust, Grains of Infinity, Dimensional Shard and the RFTools Dimensional Shard.[9]

Crushed End Stone is the sieve input for Draconium Dust, Vibranium Nugget, Inferium Essence and the pack's own Azure Silver Ore Chunk. Crushed Netherrack also sieves into Inferium Essence. The recipe dump counts 24 sieve recipes that make Mystical Agriculture items, 14 that make Applied Energistics 2 items and 7 that make Ender IO items.[9]

Ore chunks

Ex Deorum ore chunks are bridged to other mods' ores by pack crafting recipes. The bridged ores are aluminum, cobalt and iridium (Aluminum Ore, Cobalt Ore, Iridium Ore), osmium and uranium (Osmium Ore, Uranium Ore), and lead, nickel and silver (Lead Ore, Nickel Ore, Silver Ore). Boron, lithium and magnesium chunks resolve to Boron Ore, Lithium Ore and Magnesium Ore through ore recipes the pack changed.[9]

Osmium OreAdded by the pack

Crafting Shaped

The osmium version of the chunk to ore recipe.

The pack also adds Functional Storage compacting recipes that pair four chunks of an ore with the matching ore block.[9]

You can also skip the ore step. NuclearCraft manufactory recipes turn chunks straight into dust. Four chunks make two dust for boron, lithium, magnesium, cobalt, osmium, uranium, copper and gold, and the pack changed those. A single chunk makes two dust for aluminum, iridium and nickel (for example Aluminum Dust and Nickel Dust).[9]

Compressed materials

For bulk processing, the pack links Ex Deorum to Compressium. Hammering a compressed block gives the compressed crushed version.[9][20]

Hammer (exdeorum)

Recipe id: exdeorum:hammer/compressed_crushed_end_stone

Compressed Endstone becomes Compressed Crushed End Stone when hammered.

Hammering Compressed Sand or Redsand gives Compressed Dust, which a barrel mixing recipe uses with Water to make Compressed Clay (1x). Ender IO sag milling also handles Compressed Block of Endstone (1x) and Compressed Netherrack (1x), producing Crushed End Stone and Crushed Netherrack.[9][26]

Upgrades and endgame ties

The pack adds smithing upgrades for your tools. You take the Netherite Hammer to the Allthemodium hammer using an Allthemodium Block and the Allthemodium template. The Netherite-Iron hammer uses an Block of Netherite-Iron and the vanilla netherite template.[9]

Automating the sieve

The Mechanical Sieve and the Auto Mechanical Sieve convert into each other with shapeless recipes. Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Ex Deorum?

5 parts

Ex Deorum items show up in four quest chapters in this pack. The quest book asks for most of them in The Beginning. The other chapters ask for them only in a few quests. Everything below describes what each quest asks you to hand in, and in what order.[3][4][5][27]

The Beginning (Storyline)

The Ex Deorum quests in this chapter branch off "Where it all began" quest, which asks for oak logs and comes after "Welcome" quest.[3]

The sieve and mesh line

After the string quest, "The Sieve" quest asks for an Oak Sieve and a String Mesh. From there the book splits. a quest in "The Beginning" is titled as early sieve automation and asks for a Mechanical Sieve and a Mechanical Hammer. "Flint Mesh" quest starts the mesh quests, which go in this order:[3]

  1. "Flint Mesh" quest asks for a Flint Mesh.[3]
  2. "Iron Mesh" quest asks for an Iron Mesh.[3]
  3. "Gold Mesh" quest asks for a Golden Mesh.[3]
  4. "Diamond Mesh" quest asks for a Diamond Mesh.[3]
  5. a quest in "The Beginning" asks for a Netherite Mesh.[3]

The line carries on with the Allthemodium and Vibranium mesh quests, which ask for kubejs items rather than Ex Deorum ones.[3]

"Auto Sieve" quest comes after the mechanical sieve and hammer quest. It asks for a long list of items, and one of them is the Cobalt Ore Chunk.[3]

EndGame (Storyline)

a quest in "EndGame" asks for an Oak Sieve alongside an item from Just Dire Things. a quest in "EndGame" comes after it and after a quest in "EndGame", and a quest in "EndGame" follows that one.[27]

Masterful Machinery (Production)

Two quests here ask for Ex Deorum machines, and both come after a quest in "Masterful Machinery". a quest in "Masterful Machinery" asks for a Mechanical Sieve together with a Masterful Machinery auto sieve controller. a quest in "Masterful Machinery" asks for a Mechanical Hammer together with an auto crusher controller.[4]

Kill Trophies (Challenges)

a quest in "Kill Trophies" asks for a sculk shrieker and a Sculk Core. A kill quest comes after it in the chapter.[5]

Which Ex Deorum config options matter?

5 parts

Ex Deorum's settings are split across three files in this pack. Most of what affects your gameplay lives in the server file, so we'll start there.[6][7][28]

Starting items and world type

Sieves and automation

server.automated_sieves is false, so machines and fake players can't interact with the normal Sieve. The config notes that the intended way to automate is the Mechanical Sieve. Because of that, server.nerf_automated_sieves (true) does nothing here.[6]

Barrels, crucibles and Witch Water

Preferred ores

Ex Deorum recipes that craft into an ore use whichever item the common config prefers. The pack points several of them at specific mods: lead, nickel, silver and tin use Thermal (common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_lead_ore, common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_nickel_ore, common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_silver_ore, common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_tin_ore). Osmium and uranium use Mekanism (common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_osmium_ore, common.preferred_tag_items.preferred_uranium_ore).[7]

Aluminum, cobalt, iridium, platinum and zinc use items from Common Ore Library. Boron, lithium, magnesium and thorium are left as air, which means the default preference, chosen alphabetically by mod name.[7]

Client options

client.use_fast_infested_leaves is false, so infested leaves use the normal renderer. If you get FPS drops around lots of infested trees, this is the option to switch on. client.rainbow_compost_during_june is true, so compost in barrels shows up rainbow colored in June.[28]

Unverified Apart from the starting watering can, the sources don't show which of these values differ from the mod's own defaults.
