What is Mekanism?

1 part

Mekanism is a tech mod built around machines, energy and smarter ore processing. Instead of smelting an ore straight into one ingot, you can run it through purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization to get double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple ingots per ore, given enough infrastructure and energy. Every machine can also be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once.[1]

Along the way you get fun gadgets like the Robit, a little robot friend, and the Digital Miner, which automates mining with filters. You also get transmitters for items, fluids, gases, energy and heat, plus Logistical Transporters for sorting and filtering.[1]

Mekanism Generators is the official power addon. Without it, you need another mod to power your Mekanism machines. It adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator and Wind Generator, plus the Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]

Mekanism Tools adds tools, armor and shields for Bronze, Lapis Lazuli, Osmium, Refined Glowstone, Refined Obsidian and Steel. It also adds Paxels (an axe, pickaxe and shovel in one), including Paxels for the vanilla Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond tiers.[3]

This pack includes Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools at version 10.4.16 (the 1.20.1 build).[4]

Where it sits in the quest book

Mekanism has its own chapter, "Mekanism", in the group "Storage and Power". It is chapter 19 of 44 and has 85 quests. The chapter opens with the quest "Mekanism" quest, which asks for a Heat Generator. Five checkmark quests follow it, and nearly all the machine quests branch from those.[5]

From there the chapter builds in chains. The Enrichment Chamber leads to enriched items such as Enriched Iron and Enriched Diamond. The Metallurgic Infuser leads to Infused Alloy and the Basic Control Circuit, and those lead on through the other alloys and control circuits. The tier installers run from Basic Tier Installer to Advanced Tier Installer, Elite Tier Installer and Ultimate Tier Installer. The chapter then continues with items from other mods.[5]

Mekanism machines also show up in a second chapter, "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", in the group "Production" (chapter 35 of 44, 11 quests). It asks for the Laser, the Rotary Condensentrator and the Solar Neutron Activator alongside items from another mod.[6]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

4 parts

Welcome to the Mekanism setup in this pack! In the quest book, the chapter called Mekanism sits in the group "Storage and Power" (chapter 19 of 44) and has 85 quests. It opens with "Mekanism" quest, which asks for a Heat Generator. Then come five checkmark quests, and from there it branches out into machines, alloys and tiers. Below is a sensible order for the first steps.[5]

Get osmium and build a Metallurgic Infuser

Your first real machine is the Metallurgic Infuser, and it needs an Osmium Ingot. The pack has changed the ore blasting recipe for osmium ingots and the dust smelting recipe, and it adds an Alloy Smelter route for osmium dust, so use these in-pack routes.[7]

In the quest book, Infused Alloy and Basic Control Circuit both come right after the Metallurgic Infuser quest. You will need both soon. Mekanism's own advancement describes the Infused Alloy as infusing iron with redstone. The infuser stores 20,000 Joules and uses 50 Joules per operation tick, so give it power before you expect results.[5][8][9][10]

Set up power

The chapter's first quest points you at the Heat Generator. In this pack it makes 200 Joules per tick, plus 30 for each side touching lava and 100 more in an ultrawarm dimension like the Nether. It consumes 10 mB of lava to transfer those 200 Joules and stores 160,000 Joules.[5][11][12]

The Solar Generator peaks at 50 Joules per tick and stores 96,000. The Wind Generator has a base generation between 60 and 480 and stores 200,000. The pack sets the minimum height that affects wind generation at Y 24, so keep that in mind when choosing where to put it.[11][12]

The Bio-Generator is a good early step. It produces 350 Joules per tick and has a 24,000 mB tank. It burns Bio Fuel, which you can get by crushing leaves. The generator recipe is below.[7][11]

Build the Crusher

The Crusher turns items into dust and also gives you Bio Fuel from leaves. In the quest book, the Bio Fuel quest comes after both the Crusher and the Pressurized Reaction Chamber quests. The crusher stores 20,000 Joules and uses 50 per operation tick.[5][7][9][10]

Enrichment and what comes next

After the Enrichment Chamber quest, the book lists Enriched Carbon, Enriched Redstone, Enriched Diamond, Enriched Iron and Enriched Obsidian. The chamber stores 20,000 Joules and uses 50 per operation tick. Here is the diamond one as an example:[5][9][10]

The Osmium Compressor quest leads to the refined glowstone and refined obsidian ingot quests. The alloy line goes from Infused to Reinforced to Atomic Alloy, and the circuit line runs Basic, Advanced, Elite, Ultimate. Tier installers and smelting factories follow the same ladder.[5][13]

Tip: Mekanism screens in this pack show energy in Forge Energy and temperatures in Celsius, set in common.energyType and common.temperatureUnit. The generator and machine numbers above come from config files that list their values in Joules.[9][11][14]

How does Mekanism work?

7 parts

Mekanism is built around machines you scale up. Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded to a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once. The Installer upgrades your factories in place. In this pack the advanced factories are crafted from the basic ones, like the one below.[1][8]

Power

Mekanism's GUIs and network reader show energy in Forge Energy in this pack (common.energyType), and temperatures in Celsius (common.temperatureUnit). Internally everything runs on Joules. 1 FE equals 2.5 J (general.energy_conversion.feConversionRate) and 1 EU equals 10 J (general.energy_conversion.euConversionRate).[14][15]

Each machine has a base energy buffer and a per-tick cost, both set by the pack. The Crusher holds 20,000 J and uses 50 J per operation tick. The Digital Miner holds 50,000 J and uses 1,000 J per tick. The Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer holds 1,000,000,000 J, which also sets its max process rate, and uses 100,000 J per tick. The full lists are in storage.crusher and usage.crusher.[9][10]

Upgrades scale machine performance by a base factor of 10, multiplied by installed upgrades divided by possible upgrades (general.maxUpgradeMultiplier).[15]

Teleporting costs 1,000 J as a base, plus 10 J per unit of distance, plus a flat 10,000 J for interdimensional trips. The teleporter buffer is 5,000,000 J.[9][10]

Processing chains

The Crusher is the entry point for a lot of pack progression.[7]

The pack ships its own crushing recipes for the basic terrain chain: stone to cobblestone, cobblestone to gravel, gravel to sand, and sandstone variants to 2 sand. Each of these takes an input amount of 2.[16][17][18][19]

Ore multiplication works through chemicals. Treating copper ore with hydrogen chloride in the injection route gives 4 Copper Shard, and the oxygen purifying route gives 3 Copper Clump.[7]

The pack also changes the dissolution of an Osmium Ingot with sulfuric acid, which makes 1,000 mB of dirty osmium slurry. Its Atomic Alloy infusing recipe uses an amount of 40 refined obsidian infusion plus a reinforced alloy.[20][21]

Pressurized Reaction Chamber recipes

The pack adds several reaction recipes that chain together into plastics. One turns water and hydrogen with 2 bio fuel items into ethene and substrate in 100 ticks. A second multiplies substrate to 8 in 400 ticks while giving back 10 mB of oxygen. A third makes an HDPE Pellet in 60 ticks. The HDPE Rod is then crafted from a pellet.[7][22][23][24]

HDPE RodMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

4 × HDPE Pellet

Recipe id: mekanism:hdpe_rod

  • Wood gasification: wooden slabs are turned into 10 mB of hydrogen in 15 ticks.[25]
  • A netherite block is turned into 2,160 mB of molten thermonuclear gas in 900 ticks, needing 1,000 energy.[26]
  • Compressed enriched radiance is turned into compressed enriched thermonuclear in 60 ticks. The double compressed version takes 9,720 mB of lava and the same amount of molten thermonuclear gas.[27][28]

The reaction chamber itself has a base buffer of only 2,000 J and uses 5 J per tick (storage.pressurizedReactionBase, usage.pressurizedReactionBase), so most of the energy cost comes from each recipe's own energy requirement.[9][10][24][26]

Transport and automation

Each resource has its own transmitter: Universal Cables for energy, Mechanical Pipes for fluids, Pressurized Tubes for chemicals, Logistical Transporters for items and Thermodynamic Conductors for heat. A Restrictive Transporter lowers a path's priority, and a Logistical Sorter filters what goes where.[8]

  • Right-clicking a transmitter with the next tier of alloy upgrades it in the world (general.transmitterAlloyUpgrade is on).[8][15]
  • Machines auto eject 1,024 mB of fluid or chemical at a time (general.auto_eject.fluid, general.auto_eject.chemical).[15]
  • Use the configurator to change a block's sides, and a configuration card to copy one machine's setup to another.[8]
  • The Electric Pump reaches up to 80 blocks and the Fluidic Plenisher stops after 4,000 blocks. Pumping does not remove water sources (general.pump.pumpWaterSources is off).[15]
  • The Digital Miner reaches up to 32 blocks and takes 80 ticks per block without upgrades. Silk touch mode multiplies its energy cost by 12.[15]
  • The QIO system has Drive Arrays, Importers and Exporters for automating bulk item storage.[8]
  • Security is enabled, and ops do not bypass it by default.[15]

Multiblocks

Multiblock capacity scales with interior volume, and the pack sets the per-block contribution. A dynamic tank gives 350,000 mB of fluid or 16,000,000 mB of chemical per block. The Thermal Evaporation Tower gives 64,000 mB of input per block and has a 10,000 mB output tank. The boiler gives 16,000 mB of water and 160,000 mB of steam per block, with 0.7 water conductivity.[15]

The turbine contributes 16,000,000 J of energy storage and 64,000 mB of steam per block. Dispersers move 1,280 and vents 32,000, the condenser rate is 64,000, and each coil carries 4 blades per blade applied.[11]

The fission reactor defaults to a burn rate of 0.1. Each fuel assembly adds 1 to the max burn rate and holds 8,000 mB of fuel. Set the surface area target of 4 for full boil efficiency.[11]

The fusion reactor stores 1,000 mB of fuel and 1,000,000,000 J. The pack adds a Better Fusion Reactor config that allows water (to steam) and sodium (to superheated sodium) as coolants, and hides the original Mekanism fusion recipes.[11][29]

The SPS needs 1,000 mB of polonium per 1 mB of antimatter, at 1,000,000 energy per mB of input, and stores up to 1,000 mB of antimatter.[15]

Watch out: Worldwide radiation is switched off in this pack (general.radiation.radiationEnabled is false). Fission meltdowns are still enabled, with an explosion radius of 8 and a 0.001 chance once damage passes 100%. The fusion reactor does not explode at 100% error level (bfr.better_fusion_reactor.reactor_meltdown is false).[11][15][29]

Generators

  • Solar Generator: 50 J/t peak, 96,000 J buffer. Advanced Solar: 300 J/t peak, 200,000 J buffer.[11][12]
  • Wind Generator: 60 to 480 J/t depending on height, with Y 24 to 2031 counting. Buffer 200,000 J.[11][12]
  • Bio Generator: 350 J/t, 24,000 mB tank, 160,000 J buffer.[11][12]
  • Heat Generator: 200 J/t base, plus 100 in the Nether and 30 per adjacent lava side. Buffer 160,000 J.[11][12]
  • Gas-Burning Generator: 18,000 mB tank, and ethylene burns for 20 ticks per mB.[11]

The Electromagnetic Coil is a key crafted component for these.[7]

Compact multiblocks

The pack's compact machines config adds a Compact Fission Reactor and a Compact Industrial Turbine. The reactor burns up to 192,000 fuel per tick, and the turbine uses 150 virtual blades with 2,000,000,000,000 energy capacity. See compactfissionreactor.burnrate and compactturbine.blades.[30]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

7 parts

In this pack, Mekanism progression is told by the quest book. The Mekanism chapter sits in the "Storage and Power" group (chapter 19 of 44) and has 85 quests. It opens with the "Mekanism" quest quest, which asks for a Heat Generator. Five checkmark quests follow it, and the machine quests branch off those.[5]

Machines first

The early branches ask for the machines you need to process ore and build the tier chain: Enrichment Chamber, Crusher, Metallurgic Infuser, Osmium Compressor and Purification Chamber. The Enrichment Chamber leads to quests for Enriched Carbon, Enriched Redstone, Enriched Diamond, Enriched Iron and Enriched Obsidian. The Osmium Compressor leads to the Refined Obsidian, Refined Glowstone and Refined Redstone ingot quests.[5]

Alloys and control circuits

The quest order below is the backbone of the tier system. Alloys and circuits climb in parallel, and each circuit quest needs the matching alloy before it.[5]

  1. Infused Alloy and Basic Control Circuit both come after the Metallurgic Infuser quest.[5]
  2. Advanced Control Circuit comes after the Infused Alloy and Basic Control Circuit quests.[5]
  3. Reinforced Alloy comes after Infused Alloy, and Atomic Alloy comes after Reinforced Alloy.[5]
  4. Elite Control Circuit comes after Advanced Control Circuit and Reinforced Alloy.[5]
  5. Ultimate Control Circuit comes after Elite Control Circuit and Atomic Alloy.[5]

The pack ships its own Atomic Alloy recipe. It is a metallurgic infusing recipe that builds on the Reinforced Alloy, which matches the quest order above.[5][21]

Tier installers and smelting factories

Tier installers follow the same ladder. The quests run Basic Tier Installer, then Advanced Tier Installer, then Elite Tier Installer, then Ultimate Tier Installer. The chapter then carries on past Ultimate with Absolute, Supreme, Cosmic and Infinite installers, each after the previous one. The matching circuit quests (Absolute, Supreme, Cosmic, Infinite) chain off new alloys, starting from Radiance Alloy after Atomic Alloy.[5]

The smelting factories are in the Smelters chapter (group "Production", chapter 42 of 44). It has quests for Basic Smelting Factory, Advanced Smelting Factory, Elite Smelting Factory and Ultimate Smelting Factory, plus Absolute, Supreme, Cosmic and Infinite versions. The Energized Smelter has a quest there too.[13]

Where the circuit tiers gate other things

The Ultimate Control Circuit matters outside the Mekanism chapter. In the AllTheModium chapter (group "Production", chapter 36 of 44), it is one of the quests that must be done before the Unobtainium Ingot quest.[31]

The Chemical Crystallizer recipe in this pack also uses a circuit tier, so check the recipe below before you plan your build. Fluorite is part of that recipe. The pack adds a sieve recipe that gives Fluorite from sand.[7]

Endgame

The Mekanism-based reactor line has its own chapter, "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor" (group "Production", chapter 35 of 44). It covers the Laser, the Rotary Condensentrator and the Solar Neutron Activator. The Legendary Challenges chapter has a quest asking for 5,000 Polonium Pellet.[6][32]

The EndGame chapter has creative versions of Mekanism blocks after the quest "The Beginning of the End": Creative Chemical Tank, Creative Fluid Tank and Creative Energy Cube. The Creative Bin quest comes after the chemical tank, fluid tank, compressor, mana battery and power source quests.[33]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

5 parts

Mekanism's materials rarely stay inside its own machines in this pack. Plenty of recipes from other mods take Mekanism items or hand them back, and these are the connections that show up in the pack's recipes.[7]

Ores from other mods go through Mekanism processing

The usual Mekanism ore chain is extended to metals from other mods. The pack has 18 injecting recipes that use Liquid Hydrogen Chloride (Liquid Hydrogen Chloride) to make All The Ores shards, and 18 purifying recipes that use Liquid Oxygen (Liquid Oxygen) to make clumps. Allthemodium has 9 recipes of each kind. With aluminum, an ore in the injecting recipe gives 4 shards, and an ore in the purifying recipe gives 3 clumps.[7]

Storage blocks that convert between mods

To stop duplicate blocks clogging your storage, the pack adds stonecutting recipes that convert both ways between Mekanism's Tin Block and the Tin Block, and between Mekanism's Bronze Block and Thermal's Block of Bronze. The Uranium Block can likewise be cut into the Chisel and Chipped Block of Uranium and back.[7]

Transport, tools and add-ons

Ender IO's Pressurized Chemical Conduit is made from Mekanism's Advanced Pressurized Tube, and the pack changed that recipe so it gives 3 conduits. Curvy Pipes' Large Energy Pipe has a recipe added by the pack that builds on Mekanism's alloys.[7]

Mekanism Tools bronze gear can be recycled: smelting or blasting any bronze tool or armor piece gives a Thermal Bronze Nugget. The pack changed those two recipes and added a matching Ender IO alloy smelting recipe.[7]

Mekanism Extras adds Absolute versions of Ultimate parts, such as the Absolute Bin and the Absolute Induction Cell. The Absolute Logistical Transporter recipe makes 8 transporters at a time.[7]

In the quest book

The Mekanism chapter sits in the Storage and Power group, as chapter 19 of 44 in the book. It has 85 quests and opens with a quest asking for the Heat Generator.[5]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Mekanism?

7 parts

The pack's quest book has one dedicated Mekanism chapter, plus a few Mekanism quests spread through other chapters. The main chapter is called "Mekanism". The book puts it in the group "Storage and Power" as chapter 19 of 44, and it holds 85 quests. This section only lists what those quests ask you to hand in and in what order.[5]

The Mekanism chapter

The chapter opens with "Mekanism" quest, which asks you for a Heat Generator. Several untitled checkmark quests come after it, and most of the machine and generator quests come after one of those checkmarks. Here is how the rest is laid out.[5]

Enriched items and refined ingots

Several quests come after the Enrichment Chamber quest and ask you for enriched items: a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism". The iron one leads on to a quest in "Mekanism" and then a quest in "Mekanism". After the Osmium Compressor quest the book asks for the refined ingots: a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism".[5]

Alloys and control circuits

This is the longest line in the chapter. The quests are ordered like this:[5]

  1. a quest in "Mekanism" comes first, and a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism" come after it.[5]
  2. a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism" come next, then a quest in "Mekanism" after the Reinforced Alloy.[5]
  3. a quest in "Mekanism" follows the Advanced circuit and the Reinforced Alloy. a quest in "Mekanism" follows the Elite circuit and the Atomic Alloy.[5]
  4. The chapter then goes past Ultimate with quests for items from the Mekanism Extras add-on: a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism" and finally a quest in "Mekanism".[5]

Tier installers

The installer quests form a single chain: a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism" and last a quest in "Mekanism". The ones after Ultimate ask for items from the Mekanism Extras add-on.[5]

Evaporation and bio fuel branches

a quest in "Mekanism" asks for the controller, block and valve. It leads to a quest in "Mekanism" and then a quest in "Mekanism". The other branch starts after a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism", leads to a quest in "Mekanism", then a quest in "Mekanism", a quest in "Mekanism" and a quest in "Mekanism".[5]

Mekanism Naquadah Reactor

The book puts this chapter in the group "Production" as chapter 35 of 44, with 11 quests, and it runs as one straight line. After an opening checkmark, a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor" asks you for the reactor controller, 108 casings, 6 ports, 2 logic adapters, a lead coated laser focus matrix and 212 lead coated glass. Then come a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor" (asking for a Laser and a Laser Amplifier) and a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor". The line continues with a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor" and a quest in "Mekanism Naquadah Reactor", and ends on a checkmark.[6]

Quests in other chapters

Which Mekanism config options matter?

7 parts

Most of Mekanism works as you would expect, but a few settings in this pack matter a lot. Here are the ones I would check first, with the exact values the pack uses.[15]

Radiation is switched off

The pack sets general.radiation.radiationEnabled to false, so worldwide radiation effects are disabled. The config comment itself says not to be a downer and disable it, so this is a deliberate pack choice. The other radiation options are still in the file, for example general.radiation.chunkCheckRadius at 5 and general.radiation.negativeEffectsMinSeverity at 0.1.[15]

Fusion reactor settings

The fusion reactor in this pack is configured through a separate file, bfr.toml. These are the settings you will want to know about:[29]

Fission reactor meltdowns

Fission reactors are different: generators.fission_reactor.meltdownsEnabled is true, so they can melt down. The meltdown chance is 0.001 once damage passes 100%, and it scales up as damage keeps rising. The explosion radius is 8, and the reactor resets to 75 damage afterwards. Fuel and waste radioactivity is multiplied by 50 during a meltdown. Keep an eye on your cooling.[11]

Energy display and conversion

The GUIs show Forge Energy, since common.energyType is FORGE_ENERGY, and temperatures show in Celsius. Internally, Forge Energy converts to Joules at 2.5 per FE.[14][15]

Digital Miner

The Digital Miner reaches up to 32 blocks (general.digital_miner.maxRadius) and takes 80 ticks to mine a block without upgrades (general.digital_miner.ticksPerMine). Silk touch mode uses a 12x energy multiplier. The config comment strongly recommends leaving the radius alone, because raising it can hurt stability and performance.[15]

Storage tiers

Tier sizes are set in tiers.toml. Basic bins hold 4,096 items and Ultimate bins hold 262,144. Basic energy cubes store 4,000,000 Joules and Ultimate energy cubes store 256,000,000.[37]

Compact machine settings

The pack also has a compactmachines.toml with very large numbers. The compact fission reactor burns up to 192,000 fuel per tick (compactfissionreactor.burnrate), and the compact turbine uses 150 virtual blades (compactturbine.blades).[30]

Tip: client.allowModeScroll is true, so you can sneak and scroll to change item modes.[38]

Unverified The gear.toml, world.toml and tools.toml files in the Mekanism config folder exist in this pack, but their values are not covered here. Open those files directly to see how this pack sets them.

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

1 part

In Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools are all at version 10.4.16 (build 10.4.16.80 for Minecraft 1.20.1). All three have been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so that is the earliest release I can point to.[4]

What changed in 10.4.16

The three mods share the same release and list the same changes in their changelogs. There are only three entries:[39][40][41]

  • Fixed baby creeper music disk drops in 1.20.x.[39][40][41]
  • Added a scanner for missing tags. It logs a lot of detail and shows a nag message when you join a world.[39][40][41]
  • The version was bumped to 10.4.16.[39][40][41]
Tip: If you see a join message about missing tags, it comes from the new scanner in this release. The extra logging is there to help track down which tags are missing.[39][40][41]

Unverified Pack changelog entries for these mods were not available, so any changes made to them between Project Infinity releases are unverified.
