What is Thermal Foundation?
2 parts
Thermal Foundation is one module of the Thermal Series by Team CoFH. This module holds both "Core" and "Foundation", which the mod page describes as a collection of common components, resources and tools. The series needs CoFH Core to run.[1]
This pack ships Thermal Foundation 11.0.6, using the file thermal_foundation-1.20.1-11.0.6.70.jar.[2]
Where the quest book puts it
In the quest text available, Thermal Foundation's metals appear in the "Extended Crafting" chapter. That chapter is in the "Production" group, is chapter 37 of 44 in the book, and has 248 quests. It opens with a "Welcome to Extended Crafting" checkmark quest.[3]
The Thermal quests there ask you to hand in ingots: Tin Ingot, Lead Ingot, Silver Ingot, Nickel Ingot, Invar Ingot, Constantan Ingot, Electrum Ingot, Rose Gold Ingot, Steel Ingot, Signalum Ingot, Lumium Ingot and Enderium Ingot.[3]
They sit alongside ingot quests for many other mods and a long run of singularity quests. 113 quests in this chapter are not shown in the text I have, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[3]
Config files
Thermal uses three config files. The client file is thermal-client.toml, and the common file is thermal-common.toml, which holds the worldgen options. The server file is thermal-server.toml, found in the serverconfigs folder of your world save.[1]
How do you get started with Thermal Foundation?
5 parts
Thermal Foundation is the resource side of the Thermal series: it holds the common components, resources and tools the other Thermal mods build on. This pack has changed or added a lot of its recipes, so the recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions, not the mod defaults.[1][4]
Step 1: Find the metals
Tin, lead, nickel and silver all generate naturally here, along with cinnabar, niter, sulfur, oil sand and rubberwood trees. You can see the switches at World.Features.Tin.Enable, World.Features.Lead.Enable, World.Features.Nickel.Enable and World.Features.Silver.Enable. They are all set to true in this pack.[5]
Nickel also comes out of smelting iron ore in a Thermal smelter, which gives you iron, nickel and rich slag from one ore. That makes it an easy way to pick up Nickel Ingot early.[4]
Smelter (thermal)
- any iron ore
Recipe id: thermal:machines/smelter/smelter_iron_ore
Step 2: Make Constantan
Constantan Ingot is a good first alloy to aim for. The mod's fire charge recipe makes 2 ingots at a time.[4]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper dust or any copper ingot
- any nickel dust or any nickel ingot
Fire Charge
Recipe id: thermal:fire_charge/constantan_ingot_2
If you already have constantan dust, the pack changed the furnace recipe for it, and it also added an Ender IO alloy smelting recipe.[4]
Smelting
- any constantan dust
Recipe id: alltheores:constantan_ingot_from_dust
This furnace recipe was changed by the pack.
Step 3: Bronze parts
Once you have bronze, you can turn it into Bronze Gear and Bronze Plate. The pack changed both the gear and the hand-crafted plate recipe. The Thermal press also makes plates from bronze ingots.[4]

Quest book
The quest book asks for many Thermal ingots in the "Extended Crafting" chapter, in the Production group (chapter 37 of 44). Examples are a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting". These also feed into the prerequisites of "The one and only" quest. A further 28 quests in that chapter are told in the quest book itself.[3]
How does Thermal Foundation work?
7 parts
Thermal Foundation is the materials module of the Thermal series. It holds the metals, gems, ores and rubberwood that the rest of the series builds on. The project page says the machinery and industry side lives in a separate module, Thermal Expansion. So this section covers the machine pages the in-game guide gives you, plus what the pack does to recipes that run through those machines.[1][6]
Machines in the in-game guide
- Advanced Refinery: a machine that refines fluids.[7]
- Component Assembly: a machine that crafts machine components.[8]
- Endothermic Dehydrator: a machine that dehydrates items and fluids.[9]
- Fluid Mixer: a machine that mixes two fluids together.[10]
- Nitratic Igniter: uses various kinds of TNT to detonate items into new items. Augments and better catalysts can increase the drops, and its recipes require a catalyst.[11]
- Frost Dynamo: uses cold items such as ice or snow to produce RF.[12]
- Magmatic Accumulator: a device added by Thermal Extra that generates lava when it touches 2 lava source blocks. It makes 10mb/t, and 40mb/t in the Nether.[13]
Augments
Each guide page has an augment compatibility list. The Advanced Refinery, Component Assembly, Endothermic Dehydrator and Fluid Mixer pages all list the same set: Item Filter, Knowledge Concentrator, Expanded RF Coil, Stabilized RF Coil, High-Flux RF Coil, Expanded Tank Construction, Flux Linkage Amplifier and Flux Efficiency.[7][8][9][10]
The Nitratic Igniter list drops Expanded Tank Construction and adds Auxiliary Process Sieve, Auxiliary Cactus and Catalytic Reclamation Chamber. The Frost Dynamo page lists Expanded Tank Construction, Auxiliary Reaction Chamber and Multi-cycle Injectors.[11][12]
Machines and Foundation materials
The pack's recipe dump shows a lot of machine traffic around this mod's items. It counts 87 press recipes, 53 smelter recipes and 50 pulverizer recipes that make Thermal items. Press recipes use die items alongside the material. This mod's dies in the dump are Press Gear Die, Press Packing 3x3 Die and Press Unpacking Die, and Press Packing 2x2 Die also appears.[4]
Press (thermal)
- any bronze ingot
Recipe id: thermal:machines/press/press_bronze_ingot_to_plate
The Press turns a bronze ingot into a Bronze Plate.
Press (thermal)
Recipe id: thermal:machines/press/packing2x2/press_cured_rubber_packing
A packing die in the Press compresses cured rubber into a block.
The Chiller combines molten bronze with a gear cast to make a Bronze Gear.
Pulverizer (thermal)
- any apatite gem
Recipe id: thermal:machines/pulverizer/pulverizer_apatite
The Pulverizer grinds apatite into apatite dust.
Centrifuge (thermal)

Values the pack changed
The pack ships its own Crucible recipes for glowstone and redstone. These are the amounts and energy values in the data files:[14][15][16][17]
- Glowstone block: 360 of glowstone fluid, energy 80,000.[14]
- Glowstone dust: 90 of glowstone fluid, energy 80,000.[15]
- Redstone block: 810 of redstone fluid, energy 72,000.[16]
- Redstone dust: 90 of redstone fluid, energy 8,000.[17]
Pulverizer recipes for common blocks are also pack files. Cobblestone gives gravel (chance 0.5) and flint (chance 0.1), with experience 0.1. Gravel gives sand (chance 0.5) and flint (chance 0.1), with experience 0.5. The sandstone family gives 1 sand plus Niter (chance 0.3), with experience 0.1.[18][19][20]
Other machines using Thermal items
Thermal Foundation items also feed machines from other mods. The pack adds NuclearCraft Melter recipes that turn Basalz Rod, Blizz Rod and Blitz Rod into 1,000 of a molten fluid each. Nickel Dust and diamond dust have routes through other mods' machines too.[4][21]
Enriching (mekanism)
- any nickel ore
Recipe id: alltheores:mek_processing/nickel/dust/from_ore
Changed by the pack: a Mekanism enriching route from nickel ore to Nickel Dust.
Manufactory (nuclearcraft)
- any diamond gem
Recipe id: nuclearcraft:manufactory/diamond
Changed by the pack: a NuclearCraft Manufactory route from diamond to diamond dust.
Configs
The pack sets [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Recipes.Bottler.Default Florb Recipes]] to false. So Florb filling recipes are not created automatically for the Fluid Encapsulator. Server configs are saved per world, and the pack ships this file in its defaultconfigs folder.[1][22]
Natural spawning is set in config/thermal-common.toml. In this pack, features such as World.Features.Tin.Enable, World.Features.Lead.Enable, World.Features.Nickel.Enable and [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Features.Rubberwood Trees.Enable]] are all true.[5]
Tree extractor recipes
The pack overrides the tree extractor recipes for acacia, birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle, oak, rubberwood and spruce. In every case the data file is just an empty object.[23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]
How do you progress through Thermal Foundation?
5 parts
Thermal Foundation in this pack is less a gated tech tree and more a set of metals that the quest book keeps asking you for. Here is how the metals stack up, what the pack changed, and where the quests send you.[3][4]
Tier 1: the base metals
Tin, lead and nickel are your starting metals: Tin Ingot, Lead Ingot and Nickel Ingot. Nickel shows up as a bonus when iron ore goes through a Thermal smelter, which also gives you an iron ingot and Rich Slag.[4]
The pack adds a few ways around ore hunting. You can craft Lead Ore from an Ex Deorum lead ore chunk, and the pack changed the Integrated Dynamics squeezers so that 2 lead ore make Raw Lead. The pack also changed Mekanism enriching so that nickel ore gives 2 Nickel Dust.[4]
Tier 2: the alloys
Next come the alloys. Constantan is the one the pack has reworked the most: its crafting, smelting and blasting recipes are all pack changes, and the pack also adds an Ender IO alloy smelter route from constantan dust.[4]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper dust or any copper ingot
- any nickel dust or any nickel ingot
Fire Charge

Alloy Smelting (enderio)
- any constantan dust
Recipe id: enderio:smelting/alltheores/constantan_ingot_from_dust
Added by the pack.
Electrum Ingot can be made from molten electrum in a Thermal chiller. The pack also changed the NuclearCraft ingot former recipe that makes it.[4]
Chiller (thermal)
Recipe id: thermal_processing:machine/chiller/to_ingot/electrum
Steel Ingot is made in this pack by the NuclearCraft alloy smelter, and that recipe is a pack change. The pack also changed the Thermal press recipe that turns a steel block back into ingots.[4]
Alloy Smelter (nuclearcraft)
- 3× any coal dust
- any iron dust
Recipe id: nuclearcraft:alloy_smelter/dusts_coal-dusts_iron
Changed by the pack.
Rose Gold Ingot has the standard Thermal smelting route from Rose Gold Blend. The pack adds an Ender IO alloy smelter version on top of it.[4]
Enderium Ingot is made through an Evolved Mekanism alloying recipe that the pack changed.[4]
Alloying (evolvedmekanism)
- 2× any ender pearl
- any diamond gem
- 3× any lead ingot
Recipe id: evolvedmekanism:alloying/compat/thermal/enderium_ingot
Changed by the pack.
Bronze
Bronze parts get some pack tweaks too. The recipes for Bronze Gear and Bronze Plate were changed by the pack. The pack also adds stonecutting recipes that turn bronze blocks from other mods into Block of Bronze.[4]

Apatite
The pack gives Apatite a few extra sources, including an Ex Deorum sieve recipe that drops it from sand. It also adds a Mekanism crusher recipe and an earth charge recipe that both make Apatite Dust.[4]
Added by the pack.
What the quest book asks for
The Extended Crafting chapter (group Production, chapter 37 of 44, 248 quests) has quests for the Thermal ingots: tin, lead, nickel, silver, invar, constantan, electrum, steel, rose gold, signalum, lumium and enderium. All of them are listed as prerequisites of "The one and only" quest, the quest for The Ultimate Ingot.[3]
In the AllTheModium chapter (group Production, chapter 36 of 44), the Thermal part comes straight after "Allthemodium Intro" quest: first a quest in "AllTheModium", then a quest in "AllTheModium", then a quest in "AllTheModium". That Soul Infused Ingot quest is one of the prerequisites of a quest in "AllTheModium".[31]
The Smelters chapter (group Production, chapter 42 of 44) has a quest in "Smelters" with no prerequisite listed.[32]
In the EndGame chapter (group Storyline, chapter 7 of 44), a quest in "EndGame" comes after Infinity 1 and is one of the prerequisites of a quest in "EndGame".[33]

Right at the end, a quest in "EndGame" unlocks after The Beginning of the End. It is one of the prerequisites of a quest in "EndGame".[33]
How does Thermal Foundation work with other mods?
5 parts
Thermal Foundation's metals, dies and casts show up in recipes from a lot of other mods in this pack. Here are the connections that appear in the in-pack recipes, scripts and quest book.[4]
Bronze blocks, one stonecutter away
The pack lets you stonecut Block of Bronze into the bronze block of other mods, and back again. That covers Bronze Block, Bronze Block, Bronze Block, Bronze Block and Block of Bronze. It is not just bronze: 49 stonecutting recipes turn Thermal blocks into Chisel and Chipped integration blocks, including electrum, invar, lead, nickel and silver.[4]
One of the pack-added bronze conversions.
Press dies and other mods' materials
Thermal's Press and its dies pack and unpack materials from other mods. The fluorite packing recipe for Fluorite Block was changed by the pack, and so was the recipe that unpacks osmium blocks into Osmium Ingot. Refined glowstone nuggets pack into Refined Glowstone Ingot, and Flux-Infused Gem packs into Flux-Infused Gem Block. Melodium ingots pack into a Melodium Block the same way.[4]
Press (thermal)
Press Packing 3x3 Die
- 9× any fluorite gem
Recipe id: thermal:compat/mekanism/press_mek_fluorite_packing
Changed by the pack.
Chiller and smelter with shared metals
The Chiller turns molten metals from Common Ore Library into Thermal items. For example, 360 Molten Bronze and a Gear Cast make a Bronze Gear, and 90 Molten Aluminum with a Chiller Ingot Cast make an Aluminum Ingot. The pack changed the Chiller recipe that makes Dragonsteel Ingot from molten dragonsteel. In the Smelter, aluminum ore gives an aluminum ingot along with Cinnabar and Rich Slag.[4]
Pack-added crossovers
- Ender IO: a pack recipe makes 8 Enderium Energy Conduit using Thermal's Enderium Ingot.[4]
- Mystical Agriculture: constantan seeds are made through Extended Crafting combination crafting using Block of Constantan. Basalz Essence crafts into 6 Basalz Rod, and Rubber Essence crafts into Cured Rubber.[4]
- Botania: a Runic Altar recipe added by the pack makes silver seeds and uses Silver Ingot along with Thermal Extra's Dragonsteel Ingot and Twinite Ingot.[4]
- Gateways: the basalz gate recipe uses a Basalz Rod to make a Gate Pearl. The pack also adds a Thermal Crucible recipe that melts a basalz rod into 1,000 Molten Basalz.[4]
- NuclearCraft: a pack-added Manufactory recipe turns Nickel Ore Chunk into 2 Nickel Dust. The pack also changed the Decay Hastener recipe that turns Americium 242 into Lead Dust.[4]
- Ex Deorum: a pack recipe turns an Lead Ore Chunk into Lead Ore.[4]
- Mekanism: the pack changed coal gasification so that it also gives Sulfur Dust. A pack-added Mekanism combining recipe makes Ferroboron Dust from Steel Ingot and a NuclearCraft boron ingot.[4]
- Laser drills: the pack changed the Industrial Foregoing laser drill recipe that produces Cinnabar Ore. A pack script also lists cinnabar ore in the Actually Additions mining lens, with a weight of 250.[4][34]
- Blood Magic: a pack script adds a Thermal Crystallizer recipe that uses Blood Magic's life essence fluid to make 4 Crimson Iron Ingots, costing 10,000 energy.[35]
Alloying (evolvedmekanism)
Recipe id: alloying_thermal_extra:abyssal_ingot
Evolved Mekanism alloying, added by the pack, makes Thermal Extra's abyssal ingot.
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/mm_loot_fabrication_plant_controller
Pack recipe that pulls Thermal parts into a controller from another mod.
In the quest book
The Extended Crafting chapter sits in the Production group and is chapter 37 of 44 in the book. It has 248 quests, and many of them ask for ingots from different mods side by side. Thermal metals in there include a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting", and Thermal Extra's a quest in "Extended Crafting" is in the chapter too. The rest of that chapter's quests are in the quest book.[3]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Thermal Foundation?
5 parts
Thermal Foundation doesn't have a quest chapter of its own in the pack. Its machines and metals are spread across five chapters of the quest book. Here they are in book order.[3][31][32][33][36]
EndGame (Storyline, chapter 7 of 44)
The quest a quest in "EndGame" asks you to hand in the Machine Bottler. It comes after a quest in "EndGame" and is listed among the prerequisites of a quest in "EndGame".[33]
The quest a quest in "EndGame" asks you for the Machine Efficiency Creative Augment. It comes after "The Beginning of the End" quest, and it is one of the many quests listed before the final a quest in "EndGame".[33]
The same chapter also has "One Small Step" quest, which asks for The Ultimate Ingot. The Extended Crafting chapter further down asks for the same item.[3][33]
Mekanism (Storage and Power, chapter 19 of 44)
The Mekanism chapter has a short chain that ends in Thermal steel. It goes in this order:[36]
- a quest in "Mekanism" asks for Enriched Iron and comes after the Enrichment Chamber quest.[36]
- a quest in "Mekanism" asks for Steel Blend and comes after Enriched Iron.[36]
- a quest in "Mekanism" asks for Steel Ingot and comes after Steel Blend.[36]
AllTheModium (Production, chapter 36 of 44)
This chapter asks for the Machine Pulverizer on the way to Allthemodium. The path runs like this:[31]
- a quest in "AllTheModium" asks for the pulverizer and comes after "Allthemodium Intro" quest.[31]
- a quest in "AllTheModium" asks for 3 soul sand dust plus Apatite Dust, and comes after the pulverizer quest.[31]
- a quest in "AllTheModium" comes after the apatite dust quest.[31]
- a quest in "AllTheModium" comes after Soul Infused Ingot, and also after four other quests (Energetic Alloy Ingot, Refined Glowstone Ingot, Flux-Infused Ingot and Nitro Crystal).[31]
Extended Crafting (Production, chapter 37 of 44)
This chapter has the most Thermal quests. Each one asks for a single ingot, and none of them lists a prerequisite. They are a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting", a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting".[3]
The quest "The one and only" quest asks for The Ultimate Ingot. Its prerequisite list includes the Thermal ingot quests above, along with a very long list of other metals. a quest in "Extended Crafting" comes after it.[3]
Smelters (Production, chapter 42 of 44)
The last one is a quest in "Smelters", which asks for the Machine Furnace. The chapter lists no prerequisite for it.[32]
Which Thermal Foundation config options matter?
3 parts
Thermal Foundation keeps its settings in a client file, a common file for world generation and a server file. The pack ships its own values for each, so here is how they are set.[1][5][22][37]
Florb recipes (server)
The server file has the option [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Recipes.Bottler.Default Florb Recipes]], which the pack sets to false. When it is true, Florb filling recipes are created automatically for the Fluid Encapsulator. With it off, those automatic recipes are not generated.[22]
World generation (common)
The common file holds the worldgen options. Each feature has an Enable switch that controls whether it spawns naturally in the world, and the pack has all of these set to true:[1][5]
- World.Features.Tin.Enable, World.Features.Lead.Enable, World.Features.Silver.Enable and World.Features.Nickel.Enable.[5]
- World.Features.Cinnabar.Enable, World.Features.Niter.Enable and World.Features.Sulfur.Enable.[5]
- [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Features.Oil Sand.Enable]] for oil sand.[5]
- [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Features.Rubberwood Trees.Enable]] for rubberwood trees.[5]
Client options
The client file only changes things you see and hear, and the pack has every option on. [[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Holidays.Festive Mobs]] gives some mobs festive hats on certain days. Turning it off disables the hats for all mobs, including vanilla ones. [[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Holidays.Festive Vanilla Mobs]] covers the vanilla mobs specifically. Both may need a client restart.[37]
If you find the noise distracting, [[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Sounds.Ambient Block Sounds]] and [[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Sounds.Ambient Mob Sounds]] control ambient sounds for some Thermal Series blocks and mobs. Both are on in this pack.[37]
What changed in Thermal Foundation between versions?
1 part
This pack, Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, ships Thermal Foundation 11.0.6. The mod has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it's been there for a good while.[2]
Thermal Foundation 11.0.6
The mod's own changelog for the version you're running is a small one:[2][38]
- A minor bugfix for the Arboreal Extractor.[38]
- Backend improvements for the Cyclic Assembler. The changelog doesn't say more than that, so there's nothing here about changed behavior.[38]
I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so there's no record here of the pack changing anything in Thermal Foundation between releases.[2]
