What is Actually Subtractions?
2 parts
Actually Subtractions is an unofficial backport of Actually Additions, a tech mod, to Minecraft 1.20.1. This pack includes version 1.2.14.20+mc1.20.1. The backport says all features have been ported over, so you get the original mod's content here.[1][2]
What it does
- The atomic reconstructor turns resources into crystals.[1]
- Automation machines include the auto-placer for placing blocks, the auto-breaker for breaking blocks and the farmer for farming. In this port, the auto-breaker can use its top-left slot for a tool when one is needed to break a block.[1]
- The Empowerer turns crystals into their empowered form.[1][3]
- Canola is used for oil production, which can be a powerful energy source.[1]
- Lasers handle logistics, moving energy, items and fluids.[1]
Where the quest book puts it
In this pack's quest book, the "Masterful Machinery" chapter (chapter 25 of 44 in the "Production" group, with 18 quests) has a quest, a quest in "Masterful Machinery", that asks you for the mechanical empowerer controller and the Empowerer. It comes after a quest in "Masterful Machinery".[3]
The "ProjectE Philo Stone" chapter (chapter 33 of 44 in the same "Production" group, with 113 quests) also asks for the mod's item: the Empowered Restonia Crystal. a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" asks for 2 of them, and a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" and a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" ask for one each, after an Empowered Restonia Crystal quest. A further 32 quests in that chapter are not shown here, so check the quest book for what they say.[4]
The quest sources for this mod do not place it on the ATM Star path. Its quests sit in these two Production chapters.[3][4]
How do you get started with Actually Subtractions?
7 parts
Actually Subtractions is an unofficial backport of Actually Additions to 1.20.1. The first machine to aim for is the Atomic Reconstructor, which turns resources into crystals. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][5]
Step 1: Craft anything to get the manual
This pack leaves other.giveBookletOnFirstCraft switched on. The first time you craft something from the mod, you also get the Actually Additions Manual (WIP), the in-game manual. Keep it handy, because it has chapters on crystals and the Empowerer.[5][6][7][8][9]
Step 2: Build the Atomic Reconstructor

The mod even has achievements for crafting one and for making a crystal with it. It stores power too: machineSettings.reconstructorPower is 300,000 in this pack's config, and its Mining Lens uses 60,000 according to machineSettings.minerLensEnergy.[6][10]
Step 3: Make your first crystals
Diamond becomes a Diamatine Crystal, and any coal becomes a Void Crystal. In the pack's recipe list both are laser-type recipes.[5]

Step 4: Get Black Quartz
Black Quartz is used in the Basic Coil recipe. worldgenSettings.blackQuartzGeneration is on, so the ore generates in the world. You can smelt or blast the ore, or run it through the Crusher.[5][6]
The pack adds two shortcuts. You can smelt Smokey Quartz into Black Quartz, and the Atomic Reconstructor's Mining Lens can turn plain stone into Black Quartz Ore.[5][6]

In the quest book
The Empowerer has its own quest, a quest in "Masterful Machinery", in the Masterful Machinery chapter of the Production group. It comes after the Priority Setter quest and asks you to hand in the Empowerer. The Empowered Restonia Crystal shows up in the ProjectE Philo Stone chapter, also in the Production group, where a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" asks you to hand in 2 of them.[3][4]
How does Actually Subtractions work?
7 parts
Actually Subtractions is an unofficial 1.20.1 backport of Actually Additions, a tech mod. In this pack it covers crystal crafting, power generation, automation machines and laser-based logistics. Here is how those systems work, as far as the pack's files explain them.[1]
Atomic Reconstructor and crystals
The Atomic Reconstructor is the machine that turns resources into crystals. In this pack its power storage is set to 300,000 in machineSettings.reconstructorPower.[1][6]
Three of its recipes are in the pack's recipe dump. Diamonds become Diamatine Crystal, any coal becomes Void Crystal, and Canola Seeds become Crystallized Canola Seeds. They are all of the laser recipe type.[5]

Mining Lens
The Atomic Reconstructor can also use a Mining Lens, which costs 60,000 energy per use according to machineSettings.minerLensEnergy.[6]
The pack adds its own mining lens recipes, and every one turns plain stone (the forge:stone tag) into an ore. Each recipe has a weight. Black Quartz Ore has a weight of 450. Peridot, black diamond and white diamond ores have 500, the highest in the list. Citrine ore has 150, the lowest. The rest come from Silent Gems and Thermal ores, such as sulfur, cinnabar and carnelian.[5][11]
Black quartz also generates naturally, because worldgenSettings.blackQuartzGeneration is on. Crushing the ore gives you Black Quartz.[5][6]
Empowerer
The Empowerer turns crystals into their empowered forms. For example, Diamatine Crystal becomes Empowered Diamatine Crystal.[1][5]

The pack also uses the Empowerer for two EnderIO capacitors, the double layer capacitor and the octadic capacitor. Each recipe uses 5,000 energy and has a time value of 50.[12]
Power generation and storage
The mod has a Coal Generator, a Leaf-Eating Generator and an Oil Generator. Canola is the mod's oil source, and the pack also lets you grow canola in a Botany Pot, which gives back canola and seeds.[1][5]
- Leaf-Eating Generator: it harvests a 7 area (machineSettings.leafGeneratorArea), waits 5 ticks between cycles (machineSettings.leafGeneratorCooldown), and produces 300 CF per leaf (machineSettings.leafGeneratorCPPerLeaf).[6]
- Oil Generator: it can transfer 500 power per tick (machineSettings.oilGeneratorTransfer).[6]
For storage there are Single Battery and Double Battery items, plus the Battery Box. The Battery Box recipe uses the Energizer and the Enervator. The pack changes the Advanced Coil recipe, which the Double Battery needs.[5][10]

Laser logistics
Lasers move energy, items and fluids. The mod has Energy, Advanced Energy and Extreme Energy Laser Relays, a Fluid Laser Relay, and Item and Advanced Item Laser Relays.[1][10]
Energy relays lose energy in this pack, since machineSettings.laserRelayLoss is true. A compass is the item used to set relay direction (other.relayConfigurator). A redstone torch sets Redstone Mode (other.redstoneConfigurator).[6]
The Phantom Energyface, Phantom Itemface, Phantom Liquiface and Range Booster blocks also exist, and you can craft the Phantom Connector.[5][10]

Automation machines
The Auto-Placer places blocks and the Auto-Breaker breaks them. In this port the Auto-Breaker can use its top-left slot for a tool when a block needs one. The Farmer farms for you, and in this pack its area is 9 (machineSettings.farmerArea), which the config describes as 9x9.[1][6]
The Vertical Digger mines everything in the forge:ores tags by default. In this pack both [[config:config/actuallyadditions-common.toml#machineSettings.Vertical Digger Blacklist]] and [[config:config/actuallyadditions-common.toml#machineSettings.Vertical Digger Extra Whitelist]] are empty. The extra whitelist only applies in Ores Only Mode. The Drill's extra whitelist is also empty.[6]
Crushers
The mod has a Crusher and a Double Crusher. The pack adds crushing recipes through a script. Arcmetal, solarmetal, plasteel and voidmetal ores each give 2 of their raw form. Azure silver, blaze gold and azure electrum ingots each give 1 dust.[10][13]
Unverified The sources do not explain how the Lava Factory Controller and similar multiblock structures are built, or the energy use and speed of most machines.
How do you progress through Actually Subtractions?
4 parts
In this pack the mod's progression is a chain of recipes, and each step builds on the one before it. Here is the order I'd follow, starting with the material everything else leans on.[5]
Stage 1: Black Quartz
Black Quartz is the gateway material, because the first coil needs it. The pack gives you several ways to get it:[5]
- The pack adds its own mining lens recipe that turns stone into Black Quartz Ore, with a weight of 450.[5][11]
- Smelt or blast the ore in a normal furnace. The pack also adds an Ender IO alloy smelter recipe for it.[5]
- Crushing the ore gives Black Quartz too.[5]
- The pack lets you smelt Botania's Smokey Quartz into Black Quartz.[5][14]
This smelting recipe is added by the pack.
Stage 2: Coils and early machines
The Basic Coil is the first real component. It goes into the recipes for the Crusher, the Auto-Breaker and the Battery Box.[5]

The pack also changed the tiny fuel recipes: Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal each give 8 per craft.[5]
Stage 3: The Empowerer
The Empowerer is the big step up. Its recipe needs a Double Battery, and that battery is built from the Advanced Coil, so Stage 2 has to be done first.[5]

The quest book covers it in the "Masterful Machinery" chapter (group Production, chapter 25 of 44). The a quest in "Masterful Machinery" quest comes after a quest in "Masterful Machinery" and asks for the Empowerer itself alongside its mechanical controller.[3]
Stage 4: Empowered crystals and upgrades
Once you have the Empowerer, you can make Empowered Restonia Crystal from a plain Restonia Crystal.[5]

Empowered crystals feed the later upgrades. The Drill Fortune Augment II (Gives Fortune III!) needs an Empowered Restonia Crystal, and the Quadruple Battery needs an Empowered Enori Crystal.[5]

Recipe id: actuallyadditions:drill_upgrade_fortune_ii
The pack also uses empowering recipes for Ender IO parts: a double layer capacitor and an Octadic Capacitor, each costing 5,000 energy with a time value of 50. The Octadic Capacitor shows up in the quest book's "ProjectE Philo Stone" chapter (group Production, chapter 33 of 44), which asks for 4 of them in one quest.[4][12]
That same chapter asks for 2 Empowered Restonia Crystals in a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone", and more Empowered Restonia Crystal quests follow it. The a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" quest lists those among its prerequisites.[4]
How does Actually Subtractions work with other mods?
4 parts
In this pack, Actually Subtractions is mostly a crystal supplier for the rest of your tech tree. The empowered crystals you make in the Empowerer show up as ingredients in Extended Crafting, Avaritia, ProjectE and Botania recipes, and a few of the mod's machines get reused in endgame builds.[1][5]
Extended Crafting and Avaritia
- The pack changed the Ultimate Crafting Table recipe. It now asks for Empowered Emeradic Crystal and Empowered Void Crystal next to items from Blood Magic, EnderIO and Extended Crafting.[5]
- The Epic Crafting Table recipe is also changed by the pack. It needs a crystal block of every kind except Emeradic: Diamatine, Enori, Palis, Restonia and Void, alongside ProjectE matter blocks.[5]
- Avaritia is reworked around the crystals too. The pack changed the Crystal Matrix Ingot (it takes Empowered Enori Crystal), the Endest Pearl (it takes Empowered Emeradic Crystal) and the Neutronium Collector (it takes Empowered Enori Crystal Block).[5]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)

Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: avaritia:crystal_matrix_ingot
The pack also adds Ender Crafter recipes that use the crystals. Black Iron Ingots and Black Iron Blocks use the Empowered Void Crystal and its block, and the Empowered Super Block uses crystal blocks of all six types.[5]
ProjectE
The pack changed the Philosopher's Stone recipe so it needs Empowered Restonia Crystal along with a long list of items from many other mods. The pack's Energy Condenser recipe also asks for an Empowered Emeradic Crystal.[5]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: projecte:philosophers_stone
The "ProjectE Philo Stone" quest chapter (group Production, chapter 33 of 44 in the book) asks you to hand in the stone's ingredients. It wants two Empowered Restonia Crystals in a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone", then has follow-up quests for a single crystal such as a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" and a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone". The text of many other quests in that chapter is in the quest book.[4]
Botania and EnderIO
- The pack's Blacker Lotus recipe needs your Diamatine, Emeradic, Enori and Void crystals.[5][14]
- The pack's Pulsating Crystal recipe needs one Empowered Diamatine Crystal.[5]
- A pack recipe lets you smelt Botania's Smokey Quartz into Black Quartz.[5][14]
- Crystalline Alloy uses the Light Blue Crystal Shard and can be made either in an EnderIO alloy smelter or with an Evolved Mekanism alloying recipe.[5]
The Empowerer also makes EnderIO capacitors in this pack. Both of its pack recipes use an energy cost of 5,000 and a time of 50. The Octadic Capacitor one uses glowstone as its base, and that capacitor shows up again as a quest item in the ProjectE chapter.[4][12]
Machines, crushing and lasers
- Masterful Machinery has its own quest chapter (group Production, chapter 25 of 44). Its Empowerer quest, a quest in "Masterful Machinery", asks for the Mechanical Empowerer Controller plus the Empowerer, and it comes after the Priority Setter quest.[3]
- The pack's recipe for that controller uses Empowered Diamatine and Empowered Emeradic Crystal Blocks.[5]
- The pack's Auto Crusher Controller recipe uses the Double Crusher.[5]
- The pack's Creative Fluid Tank recipes use the Fluid Collector and Fluid Placer. The Creative Botany Pot uses Greenhouse Glass, and the Caerium Miner uses the Phantom Breaker.[5]
- The mod's crusher handles pack-made metals. Azure Silver, Azure Electrum and Blaze Gold ingots each crush into 1 dust, while the Arcmetal, Solarmetal, Plasteel and Voidmetal ores each give 2 raw metal.[13]
- The mining lens turns stone into gem and mineral ores by weight, including Silent Gems and Thermal ores. Black Quartz Ore has a weight of 450, and Peridot, Black Diamond and White Diamond ores each have 500.[11]
- Solidified Experience works as a crafting ingredient, since 8 of them go into the Experience Seeds combination recipe. A Thermal crucible also turns one into 50 Fluid Xp.[5]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Actually Subtractions?
2 parts
In this pack, the Actually Additions items that the quest book asks for show up in two chapters, and both sit in the "Production" group. You meet them in this order: Masterful Machinery first, then ProjectE Philo Stone.[3][4]
Masterful Machinery (chapter 25 of 44)
This chapter has 18 quests. The one that matters here is a quest in "Masterful Machinery". It has two item tasks: the mechanical empowerer controller from Masterful Machinery, and the Empowerer itself.[3]
It unlocks after a quest in "Masterful Machinery", the chapter's starting quest. That one has a checkmark task plus the Priority Setter item. Most of the other controller quests in the chapter also hang off it, so you can pick the Empowerer one whenever suits you.[3]
ProjectE Philo Stone (chapter 33 of 44)
This is a big chapter with 113 quests, built around gathering lots of items for the Philosopher's Stone. Actually Additions appears through the Empowered Restonia Crystal.[4]
- a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" has no prerequisite and asks you to hand in 2 Empowered Restonia Crystals.[4]
- a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" and a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" each ask for a single crystal. Both come after a quest named Empowered Restonia Crystal.[4]
- a quest in "ProjectE Philo Stone" asks for the Philosopher's Stone. Its long prerequisite list includes Empowered Restonia Crystal twice, along with many items from other mods.[4]
In short, the Empowerer comes up early in the Production group as a machine to automate. The crystal quests come later, as part of the item list you work through toward the Philosopher's Stone.[3][4]
Which Actually Subtractions config options matter?
4 parts
Everything here lives in config/actuallyadditions-common.toml. These are the values the pack currently runs with. Only the farmer and Leaf Generator areas state a default in their own comments, and the pack currently matches both. For the other settings the sources here don't show a mod default, so I won't claim the pack changed them.[6]
Machine areas and power
- machineSettings.farmerArea is currently 9, so the farmer works a 9x9 area. The comment gives 9x9 as the default and says the value must be odd.[6]
- machineSettings.leafGeneratorArea is currently 7, a 7x7x7 harvesting area (also the stated default, also must be odd).[6]
- machineSettings.leafGeneratorCooldown is currently 5 ticks between Leaf Generator cycles, and machineSettings.leafGeneratorCPPerLeaf is currently 300 CF per leaf.[6]
- machineSettings.reconstructorPower is 300,000, the amount of power the atomic reconstructor can store. machineSettings.minerLensEnergy is 60,000, the energy the Mining Lens uses.[6]
- machineSettings.oilGeneratorTransfer is 500, the power the oil generator can transfer per tick.[6]
- machineSettings.laserRelayLoss is currently true, so energy laser relays currently have energy loss.[6]
Vertical Digger and Drill lists
By default the Vertical Digger mines everything in the forge:ores tags. The pack currently leaves both [[config:config/actuallyadditions-common.toml#machineSettings.Vertical Digger Blacklist]] and [[config:config/actuallyadditions-common.toml#machineSettings.Vertical Digger Extra Whitelist]] empty. The blacklist applies in both modes, while the extra whitelist only applies in Ores Only Mode. To make it mine or skip a block, add the block's registry name to the matching list.[6]
[[config:config/actuallyadditions-common.toml#itemsSettings.Drill Extra Whitelist]] is also left empty, so the Drill only mines what it can by default. Add a registry name there if there's a block it should be able to break.[6]
Gameplay toggles
- other.superDuperHardRecipes is currently false. The comment calls it a joke feature that makes the mod completely unplayable, so leave it off.[6]
- other.tinyCoal is currently true, so Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal can be crafted.[6]
- other.waterBowl and other.waterBowlSpilling are both currently true: right-clicking a bowl on water makes a water bowl, and it spills if you don't sneak while using it.[6]
- other.tillingWorms is currently true, and other.wormDeathTime is currently 0. The comment says that at 0 ticks a worm will not die.[6]
- other.furDropChance is currently 5,000, a 1/n chance per tick for a fur ball to drop. other.doCatDrops, other.doBatDrops, other.doSeedsDrops and other.doXpDrops are all currently true.[6]
- other.redstoneConfigurator is currently Redstone Torch and other.relayConfigurator is currently Compass. Those are the items used to set Redstone Mode and laser relay direction.[6]
World generation and loot
worldgenSettings.blackQuartzGeneration and worldgenSettings.engineerHouseGeneration are both true, so Black Quartz generates and engineer houses can generate in villages. other.villageAndDungeonLoot is true too, so the mod's loot generates in dungeons.[6]
