What is Refined Storage?

2 parts

Refined Storage 2 is a mass storage mod built around a network: you connect devices together and store items, fluids and gas on that one expandable network. This pack ships Refined Storage 2.0.9, and it has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

Refined Storage lives in the General Storage chapter. That is chapter 7 of 31 in the book, in the Resources & Logistics group, and it holds 146 quests. The chapter opens with a quest saying it covers most of the basic ways to store your items. Besides Refined Storage, it also has Sophisticated Backpacks, Pocket Storage and the first Applied Energistics quests.[2]

The Refined Storage line starts with "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest. It comes right after "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest, and that makes sense: you need Sky Steel Ingots before you can craft your first Machine Core, which is used for many network components. The quest asks you to hand in Quartz Enriched Iron, a Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing.[2]

What comes after the intro quest

Four quests unlock straight after the intro: the Upgrade base, the Wrench, a Useful Blocks quest and the Configuration Card. The Useful Blocks quest covers the Relay, Storage Monitor and Detector.[2]

The Upgrade Base quest then branches into the individual upgrade quests: Regulator, Speed & Stack, Fortune & Silk Touch, Autocrafting and Range. The core network quests (Cables, Disk Drive and so on) follow a Controller quest. From there the book goes on to Grids, Auto Crafting, Wireless Networks and System Security. The text of the other 114 quests in the chapter is in the quest book itself.[2]

How do you get started with Refined Storage?

8 parts

Refined Storage is a network-based storage mod: you build a network of devices that can handle items, fluids and gas. In the pack's quest book it sits in the "General Storage" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics"), right after the sky stone quest "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest. The intro quest is "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest. Here is what to make first, and why.[2]

Step 1: Quartz Enriched Iron

Quartz Enriched Iron is the base material of this mod, and it is one of the three items the intro quest asks for. The pack changed its basic crafting recipe, and one craft gives you 4. The pack also adds alloy recipes for it in the Create mixer, the Ender IO alloy smelter, the Extended Industrialization alloy smelter and the Modern Industrialization mixer.[2][3]

Step 2: Sky Steel and the Machine Casing

The intro quest also asks for the Machine Casing, and it says you need Sky Steel Ingots before you can build the core network components. The pack changed the Machine Casing recipe, and it uses a Sky Steel Ingot. The previous quest explains where sky stone comes from: the Fluix Researcher villager, a Wandering Trader, smelting sky stone dust, or mining floating structures.[2][3]

The pack changed this recipe.

Step 3: Processors

The Controller needs an Advanced Processor, so processors come next. The three recipes below run in order: Processor Binding, then Raw Advanced Processor (the pack changed this one), then the Advanced Processor itself.[3]

Step 4: The Controller

The Controller provides your network with energy, so every network starts with one. The pack changed its recipe too.[3][4]

Step 5: Cables

Cable connects your devices to each other. The pack changed the recipe, and one craft gives 12. It uses Quartz Enriched Copper, which the pack makes in the Create mixer, the Ender IO alloy smelter and the Extended Industrialization alloy smelter. Full device blocks connect to any adjacent block whatever its color, but cables only connect to cables of the same color.[2][3]

What to do next

The "General Storage" chapter has 146 quests, and only some of them are covered here. Check the quest book for the rest.[2]

How does Refined Storage work?

7 parts

In this version of the mod, Refined Storage is built around one idea: a network of devices that can share one pool of items and fluids. One or more Controllers can power the network, Cable can link devices (or you can place devices directly against each other), and you then add devices for storing, moving, viewing and crafting.[4]

Storage and access modes

According to the mod's own descriptions, your network's capacity can come from storage disks sitting in a Disk Drive. Fluids work the same way: you craft a Fluid Storage Disk and put it in the Disk Drive. If you would rather use an existing chest or similar block, an External Storage can provide the network with storage from that block.[4]

Storage can be set to one of these access modes. Insert and extract lets the network do both. Insert only lets the network put things in, and what is inside still shows up in a Grid. Extract only means the network can only take things out.[3][4]

The mod describes a Disk Interface as a device that can transfer resources between the network and storage disks.[4]

Getting things in and out

  • Importer: can get resources into the storage network.[4]
  • Exporter: can get resources out of the storage network.[4]
  • Interface: can export and import items at the same time.[4]
  • Constructor: can get blocks from the network into the world.[4]
  • Destructor: can get blocks in the world into the network.[4]
  • Detector: can use redstone to check resources stored in the network.[4]
  • Storage Monitor: can let you view, insert or extract resources in the network.[4]

Viewing your network

Per the mod's descriptions, a Grid is how you interact with your storage. You can upgrade it to a Crafting Grid for crafting abilities, or use a Wireless Grid to reach your resources wirelessly. A Portable Grid can give access to the content of disks without requiring a storage network.[4]

Autocrafting

You can create patterns in a Pattern Grid, and an Autocrafter can use those patterns to automate crafting. The Autocrafter recipe in this pack is the mod's own recipe, not one the pack changed.[3][4]

The mod's help text says that if another Autocrafter is facing one, they form a chain, which allows more patterns going into a single machine. The Autocrafter screen shows whether it is chained, and whether it is the head of the chain.[4]

Each Autocrafter also has a lock mode setting. These are the options the screen offers:[4]

  • Lock mode option: Never[4]
  • Lock mode option: Lock until all outputs are received[4]
  • Lock mode option: Lock until connected machine is empty[4]
  • Lock mode option: Lock until high redstone signal[4]
  • Lock mode option: Lock until low redstone signal[4]
  • Lock mode option: Lock until redstone pulse is received[4]

Once you have many Autocrafters, an Autocrafter Manager lets you manage your patterns in one centralized interface. An Autocrafter only shows up there if its "Visible to the Autocrafter Manager" option is enabled. The manager can search pattern inputs, pattern outputs and Autocrafter names, and can filter its view to all, not-full or visible Autocrafters.[4]

To autocraft on demand, put an Autocrafting Upgrade in an Interface, Exporter or Constructor. To check on running tasks, use an Autocrafting Monitor, or a Wireless Autocrafting Monitor if you want to do it wirelessly. The monitor can report problems such as "No machine found", "Machine doesn't accept resource" and "Autocrafter is locked", and it can cancel tasks.[4]

Expanding and protecting the network

  • Relay: can turn entire sections of a network on or off, and create new branches.[4]
  • Network Transmitter, Network Receiver and Network Card: can add components without cables.[4]
  • Security Manager: its help text says that when active, it protects the network by default and blocks all operations. You then add Security Cards to permit or deny specific operations for a player.[4]

What this pack changes

The pack edits some of the recipes that feed into storage and autocrafting. The 1024B Fluid Storage Block and 1024B Fluid Storage Disk recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so follow the recipes shown here rather than the mod's defaults.[3]

Creative Controller

The pack's creative item script adds a shapeless recipe for the Creative Controller, made from a regular Controller and a creative ascension item. The same script notes that several other Refined Storage creative items, such as the Creative Storage Block and Creative Portable Grid, have no recipe there.[5]

How do you progress through Refined Storage?

8 parts

The quest book calls the Refined Storage in this pack Refined Storage 2. Its quests sit in the "General Storage" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 7 of 31). The line starts at "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest, which comes right after "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest, the Sky Stone quest. Some quests in that chapter are not covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]

Step 1: Base materials

The welcome quest asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, Sky Steel Ingots and a Machine Casing. Its text says you need Sky Steel Ingots before you craft your first Machine Core, which is used for many network components. The pack changed the casing recipe, and Sky Steel is part of the pack's version.[2][3]

The pack changed this recipe.

The pack also changed the hand-crafting recipe for Quartz Enriched Iron, and it gives 4 per craft. The pack added extra routes for the same item in the Create mixer, the EnderIO alloy smelter, the Extended Industrialization alloy smelter and the Modern Industrialization mixer. Quartz Enriched Copper has the same set of routes, and the pack's Cable recipe uses it and makes 12 Cables per craft.[3]

How the quests unlock things

Storage tiers

Item storage starts at "1k Storage Part" quest, then "64k Storage Part" quest, then "256k Storage Part" quest. The 256k part comes from the ExtraStorage add-on rather than from Refined Storage itself. The pack changed both the 1k Storage Part recipe and the 64k Storage Part recipe, and both are shown below.[2][3]

Fluids follow their own ladder in the quest book: "64B Fluid Storage Part" quest, "4096B Fluid Storage Part" quest, "16384b Fluid Storage Part" quest and then "1048576b Fluid Storage Part" quest. Chemical storage goes from "64B Chemical Storage Part" quest to "256B Chemical Storage Part" quest to "1024B Chemical Storage Part" quest. The 64B fluid part recipe is pack-changed, and the 4096B fluid part is the mod's own recipe and builds on the 1024B Fluid Storage Part.[2][3]

Tip: You do not have to rebuild a disk to upgrade it. Craft the upgraded part together with your existing Storage Disk, and you get the next tier back with all your items kept and your old disk returned. A part is turned into a disk with a Storage Housing.[2][3]

Autocrafting

"Auto Crafting" quest comes after Grids and introduces the Pattern Grid and Pattern. Behind it sit "Autocrafting Monitor" quest, "Autocrafter" quest and "Autocrafter Manager" quest. An Autocrafter takes up to 9 Patterns and 4 Speed Upgrades. Its recipe is shown below, followed by the Construction Core and Destruction Core recipes. The pack changed the Destruction Core one.[2][3]

Wireless and range

"Wireless Transmitter" quest and "Wireless Networks" quest both follow Grids. A Wireless Transmitter has a default range of 16 blocks, and up to 4 Range Upgrades extend it to 48. "Wireless Grids" quest comes after the transmitter. For remote or cross-dimension access, a Network Card is bound to a Network Receiver, then placed in a Network Transmitter on your main network, which should be chunkloaded. "System Security" quest follows from Wireless Networks.[2]

The pack changed the recipes for the Network Transmitter and Network Receiver, so check the in-pack recipe before you plan this step. Past that, "Infinity Range Booster" quest follows the Range Upgrade quest and covers network access anywhere in the same dimension. "Dimension Card" quest then covers access across dimensions at a hefty energy cost.[2][3]

Upgrades

Once you have the Upgrade Base, the upgrade quests open up: "Regulator Upgrade" quest, "Speed & Stack Upgrades" quest, "Fortune & Silk Touch Upgrades" quest, "Autocrafting Upgrade" quest and "Range Upgrade" quest.[2]

The end of the line

The pack adds a recipe for the Creative Controller, made by combining a normal Controller with a Creative Ascension item. The pack's script lists several other creative Refined Storage items, such as the creative storage block and the creative wireless grid, as having no recipe.[3][5]

How does Refined Storage work with other mods?

5 parts

Refined Storage 2 shows up in a lot of recipes from other mods in this pack, and the pack has also changed several of its own Refined Storage recipes so they depend on other mods. Here is what the recipe data and the quest book show.[2][3]

Getting started: Sky Steel and Machine Casing

The pack changed the recipe for Machine Casing, and it now involves Sky Steel Ingot (shown below). The opening quest "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest asks you to obtain Quartz Enriched Iron, the Sky Steel Ingot and the Machine Casing, and it points you to an attached quest that explains how to get Sky Steel. It sits in the "General Storage" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31 in the book).[2][3]

    Extra storage types

Several add-ons give your network new kinds of storage. In the Mekanism integration, the pack changed the 256B and 1024B chemical storage part and block recipes, for example 256B Chemical Storage Part and 1024B Chemical Storage Block. Turning a part into a disk is a plain mod recipe.[3]

Changed by the pack, and it calls for Osmium Ingot.

    Crafting Shapeless

    Recipe id: refinedstorage_mekanism_integration:1024b_chemical_storage_disk_from_storage_housing

A plain mod recipe that turns the part into a disk with a Storage Housing.

Refined Types adds Source and Energy storage, for example 1024B Source Storage Block and 1024K Energy Storage Block. The pack changed those block recipes. The disks are shapeless recipes that combine a part with a Storage Housing. The recipe data counts 34 shaped recipes that make Refined Types items and 18 shapeless ones.[3]

The Network Energizer is a plain mod recipe built on an Interface.

Extra Storage pushes item and fluid storage past Refined Storage's own tiers, including 1024k Storage Block and 1048576b Fluid Storage Block. Its upgrade recipes take Refined Storage blocks of the earlier tiers. Advanced Importer and Advanced Exporter are built from the matching Refined Storage Importer and Exporter.[3]

Most of the "General Storage" quests are not shown in the sources here, so check the quest book for the rest of the chapter.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Refined Storage?

    5 parts

All the Refined Storage quests live in the "General Storage" chapter, which sits in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31 in the quest book). The chapter has 146 quests and covers many storage mods, so the Refined Storage ones are a branch inside it. The text of 13 of the chapter's quests isn't included here, so check the quest book for those.[2]

    Where the branch starts

The branch opens with "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest, which comes after the Applied Energistics quest "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest. It asks you to hand in Quartz Enriched Iron, a Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing. The quest explains that you need Sky Steel Ingots before you can craft your first Machine Core, and it points you to the attached quest to see how.[2]

    What unlocks right after it

    Upgrades

After the upgrade quest you get "Regulator Upgrade" quest (Regulator Upgrade), "Speed & Stack Upgrades" quest (Speed Upgrade and Stack Upgrade), "Fortune & Silk Touch Upgrades" quest (the Fortune upgrades and Silk Touch Upgrade, used in Destructors), "Autocrafting Upgrade" quest (Autocrafting Upgrade) and "Range Upgrade" quest (Range Upgrade).[2]

The Range Upgrade quest says it increases the Wireless Transmitter's range from 16 up to 48 blocks. It leads to "Infinity Range Booster" quest, which gives access to your network anywhere in the same dimension, and then to "Dimension Card" quest, which works across dimensions at a hefty energy cost.[2]

    Storage and cables

After the Controller quest come "Disk Drive" quest (the Disk Drive and Storage Housing) and "Cables" quest (the Cable).[2]

Several quests hang off the Disk Drive: "Disk Interface" quest (the Disk Interface plus one Cable Tiers disk interface), "Grids" quest, and the storage part chains. The item chain runs "1k Storage Part" quest, then "64k Storage Part" quest, then "256k Storage Part" quest, then "16384k Storage Part" quest. The fluid chain runs "64B Fluid Storage Part" quest, then "4096B Fluid Storage Part" quest, then "16384b Fluid Storage Part" quest, then "1048576b Fluid Storage Part" quest. The chemical chain runs "64B Chemical Storage Part" quest, then "256B Chemical Storage Part" quest, then "1024B Chemical Storage Part" quest, then "8192B Chemical Storage Part" quest. The 256k and larger item parts, the 16384b and larger fluid parts, and the chemical parts all come from other mods.[2]

Off the Cable quest you get "System Input & Output" quest (importers, exporters and interfaces), "Constructor" quest (Constructors), "Destructor" quest (Destructors) and "External Storage" quest (External Storage, which reaches chests, drawers and tanks).[2]

    Grids, wireless and autocrafting

The Grids quest, "Grids" quest, asks for the Grid and Crafting Grid. Three branches follow it.[2]
