What is FTB Materials?
1 part
FTB Materials 21.1.4 is part of this pack. It supplies items in the ftbmaterials namespace, and in this pack you mostly meet them through the Mekanism quests, where they show up as quest tasks.[1][2]
Where the quest book puts it
The sources show no chapter of its own for this mod. Its items appear in the "Mekanism" chapter, which sits in the "Tech Mods" group as chapter 27 of 31 in the book and has 50 quests. Here is where its items turn up:[2]
- "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest is the first quest listed in the chapter, with no quest before it. It asks for Osmium Ingot, and "The Metallurgic Infuser" quest comes after it.[2]
- "Carbon Infusion" quest asks for Steel Ingot. It comes after The Metallurgic Infuser, and "Machine Casings" quest comes after it.[2]
- "Chemical Oxidizer" quest asks for Sulfur Dust and comes after Machine Casings.[2]
- "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest asks for Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust. It comes after Diamond Infusions.[2]
- "Refined Ingots" quest follows Refined Obsidian Dust and asks for Refined Obsidian Ingot and Refined Glowstone Ingot.[2]
- "Lithium Dust" quest asks for Lithium Dust and comes after Crystallizing Chemicals and Liquid Lithium.[2]
The quest book also has more Mekanism quests that I can't walk through here, so check the chapter in-game for the rest of the path.[2]
How do you get started with FTB Materials?
2 parts
In this pack, your first steps with FTB Materials items run through the Mekanism chapter of the quest book. That chapter sits in the Tech Mods group (chapter 27 of 31), and its first quest asks for an Osmium Ingot. Here is the order I'd follow.[2]
- Get your first Osmium Ingot. The quest "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest asks for it, and its text says you need to get your hands on some Osmium to start with Mekanism.[2]
- Build the Metallurgic Infuser in "The Metallurgic Infuser" quest. The quest book calls it the core machine of Mekanism, and the next quests ("Redstone Infusion" quest, "Carbon Infusion" quest and "Generating Power" quest) all come after it.[2]
- Make Steel Ingot in "Carbon Infusion" quest. You infuse iron with carbon from coal or charcoal to get Enriched Iron, infuse it again to get Steel Dust, then smelt that into the ingot. Steel is also needed for the basic pipes from the mod.[2]
- Craft Steel Casings in "Machine Casings" quest. The quest says most machines in the mod need them, and a lot of the later quests come after this one.[2]
- Collect Sulfur Dust for "Chemical Oxidizer" quest, where the Chemical Oxidizer breaks it down into a gas for your ore processing upgrades.[2]
- Work toward Refined Obsidian Dust in "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest. You crush obsidian into Obsidian Dust, then infuse it with Enriched Diamonds in a Metallurgic Infuser. After that, "Refined Ingots" quest uses it for Refined Obsidian and Refined Glowstone ingots.[2]
Osmium ingots in this pack
The pack changes the smelting recipe that turns an Osmium Clump into an ingot. A blasting version exists too and is also marked as changed by the pack.[3]
This smelting recipe is marked as changed by the pack.
If you already have a Block of Osmium, you can turn it back into 9 ingots with a simple crafting recipe.[3]
Sulfur and obsidian dust
The pack adds a Mekanism Enriching recipe that turns any sulfur ore into 2 Sulfur Dust, so you have a way to get the dust the Chemical Oxidizer quest asks for.[3]
Enriching (mekanism)
- any sulfur ore
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/enriching/ore_to_dust/sulfur
This enriching recipe is added by the pack.
If you end up with Tiny Obsidian Dust, you can craft it into full Obsidian Dust.[3]
How does FTB Materials work?
6 parts
FTB Materials is the pack's shared supply of metals, gems and dusts. Its language file lists many materials with a storage block, a raw block and ores for stone, deepslate, Nether and End, aluminum being one example. In the sources for this pack the mod's mechanics show up through other mods' machines and recipes, so this section covers how those machines handle FTB Materials items and fluids.[3][4]
Unification: one item or fluid for everything
The pack's config files in the unifier folder map one mod's item or fluid onto a single chosen replacement. That is why you keep meeting the same stuff no matter which mod's machine made it. Here are the mappings the pack sets.[5][6][7][8]
- Oil from PneumaticCraft and from Oritech both map to Modern Industrialization crude oil. See fluids.pneumaticcraft:oil and fluids.oritech:still_oil.[6][7]
- Steam from Modern Industrialization and from Oritech both map to Mekanism steam. See fluids.modern_industrialization:steam and fluids.oritech:still_steam.[7][8]
- Mekanism sulfuric acid maps to the Modern Industrialization one, set in fluids.mekanism:sulfuric_acid.[5]
- Molten uranium from Productive Metalworks maps to the Create Nuclear uranium fluid, set in fluids.productivemetalworks:molten_uranium.[9]
- Modern Industrialization coke items map to this mod's coal coke: the block is Block of Coal Coke, the dust is Coal Coke Dust and the gem is Coal Coke Gem. Its silicon ingot maps to Silicon, and its copper, electrum, platinum, silver and tin wires map to this mod's wires.[8]
- Chisel's charcoal block maps to this mod's charcoal block, and the tiny coal and tiny charcoal from Actually Additions and Utilitarian map to this mod's tiny coal and charcoal.[10][11][12]
Recipe rules: how machines get unified
The files in the rules folder cover recipe types from other mods. Each entry lists field paths inside that recipe type and says which item map, item tag map or fluid map to apply there. Create mixing, for example, is covered for its fluid ingredients and for the ids in its results, set in create:mixing.[13]
Modern Industrialization has the biggest list, with a rule for each machine, including the assembler, blast furnace, centrifuge, electrolyzer, packer and wiremill. Most of them cover item inputs, tag inputs and item outputs, and several also cover fluid inputs and outputs. The macerator rule covers only item inputs and outputs, in modern_industrialization:macerator, and the forge hammer rule covers its result id, in modern_industrialization:forge_hammer.[14]
Immersive Engineering is handled in a separate file, with rules for machines such as the crusher, metal press, arc furnace and blast furnace. They start from rules.immersiveengineering:crusher. Other fluid-handling machines have rules too, including Oritech's refinery, PneumaticCraft's thermo plant and Mekanism's rotary.[15][16][17][18]
Processing aluminum, machine by machine
Aluminum shows how the pack lets each tech mod process the same ore product in its own way. The Aluminum Cluster has a recipe in several machines, and they give different results, so pick the machine chain you already have.[3]
Crushing (create)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/create/crushing/cluster/cluster_to_clump/aluminum
Create crushing also drops a Nugget of Experience.
Enriching (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/enriching/cluster_to_dust/aluminum
Mekanism enriching turns clusters into dust.
Injecting (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/injecting/cluster_to_shard/aluminum
Mekanism injecting uses Liquid Hydrogen Chloride and makes shards.
Purifying (mekanism)

Mekanism purifying uses Liquid Oxygen and makes clumps.
Macerator (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/modern_industrialization/macerator/cluster_to_dust/aluminum
The Modern Industrialization macerator gives aluminum dust and iron dust.
Compacting and casting
Modern Industrialization's packer and unpacker handle aluminum too: the pack adds a packer recipe that turns nuggets into an ingot and an unpacker recipe that turns a block into ingots.[3]
Packer (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/modern_industrialization/packer/nuggets_to_ingot/aluminum
Unpacker (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/modern_industrialization/unpacker/block_to_ingots/aluminum
Productive Metalworks casting turns molten metal and a cast item into parts. Aluminum gears and diamond plates are made this way, and the diamond plate recipe is added by the pack.[3]

Where the pack changed things
The recipe dump marks a few recipes as changed by the pack, so the in-pack version can differ from what the mod normally does. Check the exact recipes below.[3]
Crushing (create)
Recipe id: createnuclear:crushing/crushed_raw_uranium
Changed by the pack: Create crushing turns a uranium clump into uranium dust.
Changed by the pack: smelting an osmium clump into an osmium ingot.
Changed by the pack: blasting an osmium clump into an osmium ingot.
Macerator (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: modern_industrialization:materials/bauxite/macerator/crushed_dust
Changed by the pack. Gives Bauxite Dust.
Changed by the pack. Turns a Bronze Ingot back into 9 Bronze Nugget.
The pack also removes the mod's own diamond gear recipe and replaces it with its own shaped recipe for Diamond Gear.[19]
For Malum, the pack removes the default node smelting and blasting recipes. Nodes of aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, osmium, silver, tin, uranium and zinc now give 6 of that metal's nuggets. Smelting takes 200 ticks and blasting takes 100, and both give 0.25 XP.[20]
Charging plates and wires
A pack script adds charging recipes for FTB Materials plates and wires, plus the matching ingots, for metals including copper, iron, gold, diamond, netherite, platinum and titanium. The same charged item can be made in several systems: Powah energizing, the Modern Industrialization electrolyzer, Advanced AE reaction and Create New Age energising. The energy cost climbs with the metal, from 500 for copper up to 100,000 for titanium. Charged plates can then be cut into charged wire, in Mekanism's sawing machine or with Create's cutting.[21]
How do you progress through FTB Materials?
2 parts
This guide follows the two chapters in the Tech Mods group where the quest book asks for FTB Materials items: Mekanism (chapter 27 of 31, 50 quests) and Modern Industrialization (chapter 28 of 31, 68 quests).[2][22]
The Mekanism route
The chapter opens with "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest, which asks for an Osmium Ingot to get started. The pack changed the smelting and blasting recipes that turn an Osmium Clump into that ingot, and it added a smelting and blasting route from a GeOre osmium block that gives 4 ingots.[2][3]
This smelting recipe was changed by the pack.
After that, the quest book lays out ore processing in four tiers, each with its own recap quest. As the quests describe them, each tier gets you more ingots from a single raw ore.[2]
- "Tier 1 Ore Processing" quest: as described in the quest, 3 raw ores go into the Enrichment Chamber and come out as 4 dusts, then the dusts are smelted in the Energized Smelter.[2]
- "Tier 2 Ore Processing" quest: the quest describes adding a Purification Chamber (fed Oxygen) and a Crusher before the Enrichment Chamber, for 3 ingots from 1 raw ore.[2]
- "Tier 3 Ore Processing" quest: the quest describes putting a Chemical Injection Chamber in front, fed Hydrogen Chloride or Salt, for 4 ingots from 1 raw ore.[2]
- "Tier 4 Ore Processing" quest: the quest describes starting with a Chemical Dissolution Chamber using Sulfuric Acid, then a Chemical Washer and a Chemical Crystallizer, for 5 ingots from 1 raw ore.[2]
The pack adds matching Mekanism recipes for FTB Materials items. Here are the aluminum ones for the injecting and purifying steps.[3]
Injecting (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/injecting/cluster_to_shard/aluminum
This injecting recipe was added by the pack.
Purifying (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/purifying/cluster_to_clump/aluminum
This purifying recipe was added by the pack.
Alongside the ore tiers, the book asks you to make steel with "Carbon Infusion" quest, which asks for a Steel Ingot, and to build alloys and circuits up to the Ultimate Control Circuit. For the high-end materials, "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest asks for Obsidian Dust and Refined Obsidian Dust. Then "Refined Ingots" quest asks for a Refined Obsidian Ingot and a Refined Glowstone Ingot. "Lithium Dust" quest asks for Lithium Dust.[2]
The Modern Industrialization route
This chapter starts with the Forge Hammer. "Forge Ahead" quest then asks for a Copper Rod, an Iron Plate and a Copper Plate. The pack changed the Forge Hammer recipes for copper rods and copper plates.[3][22]
"Bronze Ingot" quest asks for a Bronze Ingot, which the quest calls an important alloy for progression. The pack lets you get it from a crafting recipe, a Packer, or Productive Metalworks casting.[3][22]
Steel comes next with "The Gears of Industry" quest, which asks for a Steel Ingot. The Steam Blast Furnace quest, "Steam Blast Furnace" quest, is a prerequisite, along with the Bronze Boiler quest. For oil and rubber, "Creating Oil from Dust" quest asks for a Coal Coke Gem and Coal Coke Dust, and the quest says you make Coal Coke in MI's Coke Oven.[22]
Crushing (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:mekanism/crushing/coke_block_crushing
The pack added this Mekanism crushing recipe for Coal Coke blocks.
Once you reach the LV Age, the chapter moves on to advanced materials. "Ruby Dust" quest asks for Ruby Dust. "Tiny Chromium Dust" quest asks for Tiny Chromium Dust. "Stainless Steel Dust" quest asks for Stainless Steel Dust, and "Stainless Steel Ingot" quest finishes with the Stainless Steel Ingot. That last quest says it goes through an Electric Blast Furnace and then a Vacuum Freezer.[22]
Enriching (mekanism)
- any ruby ore
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/enriching/ore_to_dust/ruby
The pack added this Mekanism enriching recipe for Ruby Dust.
The chapter has 30 more quests past this point. Check the quest book for those, because their text isn't covered here.[22]
How does FTB Materials work with other mods?
6 parts
Many recipes from other mods in this pack use FTB Materials items. Here is where those connections show up in the recipes and the quest book.[3]
Ore processing across mods
The pack adds recipes so that Aluminum Cluster can be processed in several different mods. Create crushing gives you Aluminum Clump plus a Nugget of Experience. Mekanism purifying turns a cluster into 2 clumps, and Oritech's refinery turns one into 3 clumps. Mekanism injecting and dissolution take 3 clusters at a time and lead to shards and dirty slurry. The pack adds all of these.[3]
Purifying (mekanism)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/mekanism/purifying/cluster_to_clump/aluminum
Mekanism's route from cluster to clump, added by the pack. It uses liquid oxygen.
Aluminum is only the example written out here. The same pattern repeats for other metals: 56 injecting recipes, 56 purifying recipes, 43 dissolution recipes and 50 Create crushing recipes take FTB Materials ingredients. Oritech's atomic forge is another route for Aluminum Clump, shown below.[3]
Atomic Forge (oritech)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/atomic_forge/clump_to_dirty_dust/aluminum
Added by the pack. This is where Aluminum Dirty Dust and Fluxite come in.
Melting and casting with Productive Metalworks
Productive Metalworks melts FTB Materials items. The pack's melting recipe turns one Aluminum Clump into 180 Molten Aluminum, and the fusing machine has a matching recipe. In total, 129 melting recipes and 125 fusing machine recipes take this mod's items.[3]
Casting goes the other way, back into this mod's items. The pack adds casting recipes for a Block of Aluminum and a Diamond Plate, fed by molten metal such as Molten Aluminum and Molten Diamond. Both are shown below.[3]
Block Casting (productivemetalworks)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/productivemetalworks/casting/molten_to_block/aluminum
Added by the pack.
Item Casting (productivemetalworks)

A casting recipe from the mod itself, not one the pack added or changed.
Item Casting (productivemetalworks)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/productivemetalworks/casting/gem/molten_to_plate/diamond
Added by the pack.
Bronze plates from every machine
Bronze Double Ingot can become a Bronze Plate in many mods. Modern Industrialization's forge hammer gives 1 plate, and so do Extended Industrialization's bending machine and the Ars press. Create pressing and Mekanism compressing give 2 plates each. The Mekanism route also uses Liquid Oxygen. The pack added all of these except the forge hammer one, which it changed.[3]
Crafting with FTB Materials items
- Modern Industrialization: Bronze Plated Bricks use Bronze Plate, and Clean Stainless Steel Machine Casing use Stainless Steel Gear and Stainless Steel Plate. The Plutonium Battery needs Plutonium Dust. All three are changed by the pack.[3]
- Extended Industrialization: the Silk Touch Module assembler recipe needs 8 Stainless Steel Plate.[3]
- Mekanism: the Chemical Crystallizer and Chemical Dissolution Chamber both use Refined Obsidian Ingot. The Gauge Dropper uses Osmium Ingot and the Canteen uses Tin Ingot.[3]
- Create and addons: the pack changes the Minecart Coupling and Anti Radiation Boots recipes, shown below. Iron Plate is this mod's item in the first. Create Nuclear has 49 shaped recipes, and the sources show Lead Ingot as the only FTB Materials ingredient in them.[3]
- Oritech: the Energy Transmission Pole uses Electrum Ingot and the Particle Accelerator Guide Ring uses Steel Ingot.[3]
- Copycats: Zinc Ingot is stonecut into 4 Copycat Beam, one of 39 stonecutting recipes that start from the same ingot.[3]

Smaller links
A few smaller links involve Aluminum Ingot, Salt Dust and Bauxite Dust. Modern Industrialization and Productive Bees each have a recipe for them, shown below.[3]
Packer (modern_industrialization)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/modern_industrialization/packer/ingots_to_block/aluminum
Added by the pack. Modern Industrialization's packer works with Aluminum Ingot.
Macerator (modern_industrialization)

Changed by the pack: Bauxite Crushed Dust now gives Bauxite Dust.
Centrifuge (productivebees)
Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/dusts/honeycomb_salty
The pack also rewrites Malum's node smelting and blasting. Each node of aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, osmium, silver, tin, uranium or zinc now gives 6 nuggets of that metal. Smelting takes 200 ticks and blasting takes 100.[20]
In the quest book
The "Mekanism" chapter sits in the Tech Mods group, chapter 27 of 31, and has 50 quests. It asks for FTB Materials items directly. "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest wants an Osmium Ingot, "Carbon Infusion" quest wants a Steel Ingot, and "Chemical Oxidizer" quest wants Sulfur Dust.[2]
Further on, "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest and "Refined Ingots" quest ask for the refined obsidian and glowstone items, and "Lithium Dust" quest asks for Lithium Dust. 34 of the chapter's quests are not covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use FTB Materials?
3 parts
The items from this mod turn up as quest tasks in three chapters of the Tech Mods group: Mekanism (chapter 27 of 31 in the book), Modern Industrialization (chapter 28) and M.I.: High Voltage (chapter 29). Here they are in the order you'll meet them.[2][22][23]
Mekanism
The chapter opens with "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest, which asks you to hand in an Osmium Ingot. Everything else in the chapter branches off from it.[2]
- "Carbon Infusion" quest comes after The Metallurgic Infuser. It asks for Enriched Iron and a Steel Ingot. Its text says Steel is needed to make the basic pipes from the mod.[2]
- "Chemical Oxidizer" quest comes after Machine Casings. It asks for the Chemical Oxidizer and Sulfur Dust.[2]
- "Refined Obsidian Dust" quest comes after Diamond Infusions. It asks for Obsidian Dust, Refined Obsidian Dust and Enriched Refined Obsidian.[2]
- "Refined Ingots" quest follows the Refined Obsidian Dust quest. It asks for a Refined Obsidian Ingot, a Refined Glowstone Ingot and the Osmium Compressor.[2]
- "Lithium Dust" quest comes after Crystallizing Chemicals and Liquid Lithium. It asks for Lithium Dust, and The Energized Induction Matrix comes after it.[2]

- "Plutonium Dust" quest asks for Plutonium Dust. It comes after the Uranium Fuel Rod quest.[23]
Which FTB Materials config options matter?
3 parts
In this pack, FTB Materials is mostly about unifying items and fluids across mods. The config files you will care about are mapping files rather than simple on/off switches. Each unifier file points one mod's item or fluid at a single replacement, and the rules files list which recipe fields get rewritten.[8][14][24]
Item mappings
- items.enderio:powdered_ender_pearl is set to Ender Dust.[24]
- items.ftbmaterials:salt_gem is set to Salt Dust.[25]
- items.ftbmaterials:dimensional_shard_gem is set to Dimensional Shard.[26]
- Tiny coal and tiny charcoal from Actually Additions and from Utilitarian are pointed at Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. Chisel's raw charcoal item and its charcoal carving tag are pointed at Block of Charcoal.[10][11][12]
- Modern Industrialization coke, coke block and coke dust are pointed at Coal Coke Gem, Block of Coal Coke and Coal Coke Dust. Its silicon ingot is pointed at Silicon.[8]
- Modern Industrialization copper, electrum, platinum, silver and tin wire are pointed at Copper Wire, Electrum Wire, Platinum Wire, Silver Wire and Tin Wire.[8]
- Create Big Cannons cast iron is pointed at Cast Iron Block, Cast Iron Ingot and Cast Iron Nugget.[27]
- Create Sifter crushed basalt, end stone and netherrack are pointed at Crushed Basalt, Crushed Endstone and Crushed Netherrack.[28]
- Oritech's plastic sheet is pointed at Molten Plastic. Its small uranium and plutonium dusts are pointed at Small Uranium Dust and Small Plutonium Dust.[7]
- PneumaticCraft wheat flour is pointed at Wheat Flour.[6]
- Neovitae manganese dust is pointed at Manganese Dust.[29]
Fluid mappings
Fluids are unified the same way. Modern Industrialization steam and ethylene are set to the Mekanism fluids mekanism:steam and mekanism:ethene, and Oritech's still steam also goes to mekanism:steam.[7][8]
In the other direction, PneumaticCraft's oil, biodiesel, ethanol, lubricant and vegetable oil are set to the Modern Industrialization fluids crude_oil, biodiesel, ethanol, lubricant and plant_oil. Oritech's oil, diesel, naphtha and sulfuric acid also point at Modern Industrialization fluids, and so does Mekanism's sulfuric acid.[5][6][7]
A few others: Extended Industrialization's blazing essence goes to productivemetalworks:molten_blaze and its honey to productivebees:honey, while Productive Metalworks molten uranium goes to createnuclear:uranium.[9][30]
Recipe rules
The rules files name the recipe fields that hold fluids or items and mark them to be filled from the fluid or item map. The pack has these for Create (create:mixing, emptying and filling), Mekanism (mekanism:rotary and chemical conversion), PneumaticCraft (Amadron, fluid mixer and thermo plant), Oritech (centrifuge fluid, cooler and refinery), Actually Additions, Productive Bees, Starbunclemania and Extended Industrialization's canning machine.[13][15][16][17][31][32][33][34]
Modern Industrialization has the biggest rule file, covering machines from the macerator and wiremill to the distillation tower and vacuum freezer. Its entries rewrite item inputs, item tags, item outputs and fluids, depending on the machine. For example, the macerator only touches item inputs and outputs, while the modern_industrialization:distillation_tower entry also covers fluid inputs and outputs.[14]
Immersive Engineering gets its own set of rules in rules.immersiveengineering:alloy and its sibling entries for the arc furnace, blast furnace, bottling machine, crusher, hammer crushing, metal press, sawmill and squeezer. These rewrite both item tags and plain items.[18]
Unverified The full list of generated unifier mappings is kept in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json. The sources here do not show its contents, so check that file in your instance for anything not listed above.
