What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
Your inventory fills up fast in a modpack, and Sophisticated Backpacks is the pack's answer. The pack ships version 3.26.2 of the mod. A Backpack gives you extra storage that you can upgrade to hold more and to do useful jobs for you.[1][2]
You can wear a backpack in a Curio Slot and open it with a keybind. You can also place it in the world by Sneak + Right-clicking while it is in your main hand. Upgrades add things like a portable crafting table through the Crafting Upgrade.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The backpacks are covered in the General Storage chapter, which is chapter 7 of 31 in the book and sits in the Resources & Logistics group. The chapter has 146 quests in total, and most of their text is not reproduced here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[2]
The quest "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest asks you for a Backpack. In the quests shown, it has no prerequisite. Three quests come directly after it:[2]
- "Colorful Backpacks!" quest, about dyeing your backpacks.[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest, about upgrading the backpack to the Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite versions.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest, which asks for the Upgrade Base you need before making any backpack upgrade.[2]
The Upgrade Base quest leads on to five more quests: "Stack Upgrades" quest, "Useful Upgrades" quest, "Void Upgrades" quest, "Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest and "Inception Upgrade" quest.[2]
The chapter also covers other storage mods such as Sophisticated Storage, Functional Drawers and Ender Storage, so you can mix them with your backpack.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Welcome to Sophisticated Backpacks! In this pack the quest book covers it in the "General Storage" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 7 of 31). Start with the quest called "Sophisticated Backpacks". The Upgrade Base, Tier Upgrades and Colorful Backpacks quests all unlock after it. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]
Step one: make the Backpack
Your inventory fills up fast in modded, so the Backpack comes first. You can wear it in a Curio slot and open it with a keybind. You can also place it in the world by sneaking and right-clicking with it in your main hand.[2]

Don't wait for a mob to drop one, either. The pack set the chance of a mob dropping a backpack when killed by a player to 0 (the mod default is 0.5), so crafting is the way to go. The setting is server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance.[3]
Step two: craft the Upgrade Base
Every backpack upgrade starts from the Upgrade Base, so make a few. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version, so check the one below rather than any other guide.[2][4]

Step three: pick your first upgrades
Upgrade slots are limited early on: the config gives 1 upgrade slot to the leather backpack and 1 to the Copper Backpack. The quest book has a quest for each of these upgrades, and all of them unlock after the Upgrade Base quest.[2][3]
- Crafting Upgrade: adds a crafting table to your backpack so you can craft on the go. The pack changed its recipe.[2][4]
- Pickup Upgrade: picks up items for you while you explore, and you can filter what it takes. The pack changed its recipe too.[2][4]
- Stack Upgrade Starter Tier: Stack Upgrades multiply the stack size of every slot in the backpack. The pack changed this recipe as well.[2][4]

If cobblestone keeps flooding your mining trips, the quest book also suggests a Void Upgrade, which can automatically void the specific items you put in its filter.[2]
Step four: tier up the backpack
A higher tier gives more storage and more upgrade slots. From the basic backpack you can go to Copper or Iron. The quest book says going Copper first saves iron, because the step from Copper to Iron only needs 4 Iron Ingots. The pack changed the Copper Backpack recipe.[2][4]

Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:copper_backpack
Here is what each tier has in this pack. These values match the mod defaults, the pack did not change them:[3]
- Copper Backpack: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[3]
- Iron Backpack: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[3]
- Gold Backpack: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[3]
- Diamond Backpack: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[3]
The last tier in the quest is the Netherite Backpack, made from the Diamond Backpack. The slot counts above live in config/sophisticatedbackpacks-server.toml.[2][3][4]

Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:netherite_backpack
Once you have the basics, the quest book has more for you, like the Inception Upgrade, Auto-Pickup Upgrades and Colorful Backpacks. This chapter also has more quests than I could cover here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
8 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks is all about the backpack's inventory and its upgrade slots. This section covers how the tiers, upgrades, fluid and energy handling, and the pack's limits work, as far as the pack's configs and recipes show.[3][4]
Backpack tiers
Each tier has its own number of inventory slots and upgrade slots, set in the server config. The pack leaves all of these at the mod's defaults.[3]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[3]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots, 1 upgrade slot.[3]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots, 2 upgrade slots.[3]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots, 3 upgrade slots.[3]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots, 5 upgrade slots.[3]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots, 7 upgrade slots.[3]
The base Backpack uses the mod's own recipe. The pack changes the recipe for the Copper Backpack. The Netherite Backpack keeps the mod's recipe and is made from a Diamond Backpack.[4]

The pack caps some upgrade types at one per backpack through server.maxUpgradesPerStorage: furnace upgrades, stack upgrades and the jukebox upgrade. The game also refuses a second Everlasting, Inception, Tool Swapper or Mob Catcher upgrade in the same backpack.[3][5]
The Inception upgrade can only go in a top level backpack, and you can't remove it while there are backpacks inside the backpack. With it, upgrades can work with the inventories of backpacks stored inside, and upgrades inside those contained backpacks stay functional. The pack leaves both of these settings on.[3][5]
Stack upgrades
The inventory stack multiplier from stack upgrades also feeds into tank, pump and battery capacity. Bundles and every colour of shulker box are on the pack's server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems list, which holds items that are not supposed to stack in storage even when a stack upgrade is inserted. The pack changes the conversion recipe from the starter tier to tier 1. Stack Upgrade Omega Tier is made from Stack Upgrade Tier 4 with the mod's recipe.[3][4]

Fluids and energy
The Tank Upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of storage slots, multiplied by the stack multiplier. Its base transfer rate is 20 mB per operation, also scaled by rows and the stack multiplier. Fluid containers in the tank slots are filled or drained one bucket at a time, then the upgrade waits for a cooldown value of 20. The pump upgrade has the same base rate of 20 mB per operation and 4 fluid filter slots.[3][4]

The battery upgrade stores 10,000 FE per row of storage slots and moves a base of 20 FE per operation. Both scale with rows and the stack multiplier. Each of these upgrades has a stack multiplier ratio setting, and 0 stops the stack multiplier affecting it.[3]
The backpack item's own fluid handler is off in this pack (server.itemFluidHandlerEnabled). The config says this prevents dupe bugs when a backpack in item form is filled or drained in another mod's tank.[3]
Item handling and automation
Filtered upgrades such as pickup, magnet, deposit, restock, refill, feeding and void have a set number of filter slots. The basic Alchemy Upgrade has 4 and the Advanced Alchemy Upgrade has 8. The magnet picks up items within a range around the backpack: 3 blocks for the basic magnet and 5 for the Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[3]

The pack changes this recipe.
The smelting, smoking, blasting and auto versions all use a smelting speed multiplier and a fuel efficiency multiplier. In this pack each is 1, which the config describes as matching a vanilla furnace. Void upgrades are allowed to void always, not only on overflow. The xp pump can mend items with Mending, using at most 5 experience points per operation.[3]
The compacting upgrade also tries one extra crafting shape, a hollow 3x3 ring of 8 items. The pack's configured extra shape is "111/101/111".[3]
On the block side, nothing is blocked from connecting to backpacks or from inventory interaction upgrades, because both lists are empty. Backpacks can't be placed inside container items. The pack also bans Mekanism's personal barrel and personal chest from being put in backpacks.[3]
Mob Catcher
A backpack can hold only one Mob Catcher Upgrade. Captured mobs take up slots, and the basic catcher has a maximum slot cost of 18 per mob. The advanced one allows 72. Hostile mobs have their slot cost multiplied by 2 and need the Advanced Mob Catcher. Players, bosses, mobs with inventories and mobs with passengers or vehicles can't be captured. You have to release captured mobs before removing the upgrade.[3][5]
Carrying limits and sharing
The pack changes how many backpacks you can carry. The limit before slowness is 1, where the mod default is 3. Each backpack above that adds a level of slowness. Active upgrades such as the magnet work in every backpack you carry, not only the worn one.[3]
Other players can't open a backpack you are wearing by right clicking your back, because server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is off.[3]
Mobs with backpacks
Some mobs can spawn wearing a backpack. The pack doubles the chance to 0.02 from the mod default of 0.01. It sets the chance of a mob dropping its backpack when a player kills it to 0, from the mod default of 0.5, and the extra drop chance per looting level to 0. Added chest loot and added loot inside mob backpacks are both off.[3][6]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
5 parts
Where it sits in the quest book
The backpack quests live in the General Storage chapter, in the Resources & Logistics group (chapter 7 of 31 in the book). The entry point is "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks you to craft a Backpack. Three quests follow it: "Colorful Backpacks!" quest for dyeing, "Upgrade Base" quest and "Tier Upgrades" quest.[2]
The Upgrade Base quest opens the upgrade quests: "Stack Upgrades" quest, "Useful Upgrades" quest, "Void Upgrades" quest, "Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest and "Inception Upgrade" quest. The chapter has 146 quests and not all of their text is covered here, so check the quest book for anything extra.[2]
Step 1: the basic backpack
Start with the plain backpack. The quest says you can wear it in a Curio slot and open it with a keybind, or place it in the world by sneaking and right-clicking while holding it in your main hand.[2]

Backpack tiers
Upgrading a backpack to the next tier increases its storage size, and each tier also gives more upgrade slots. From the basic backpack you can go to Copper or Iron. The quest points out that going through Copper first saves iron, because the Copper to Iron step only needs 4 Iron Ingots.[2]
- Basic Backpack to Copper Backpack (optional), or straight to Iron.[2][4]
- Upgrade to the Iron Backpack, either from the basic backpack or from the Copper one.[2][4]
- Upgrade the Iron one to the Gold Backpack.[4]
- Upgrade the Gold one to the Diamond Backpack.[4]
- Finish with the Netherite Backpack, made from the Diamond one.[4]
The pack changed the Copper, Iron, Gold and Diamond backpack recipes. The Netherite one is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[4]

Stack upgrades multiply the stack size of each slot in the backpack. They also raise the capacity of upgrades like the Tank or Battery upgrades. The pack's chain runs Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4 and finally Stack Upgrade Omega Tier. The Starter tier through Tier 4 recipes were changed by the pack. Tier 1 can be made from the Upgrade Base or from the Starter tier, and Omega is made from Tier 4 with the mod's own recipe.[2][4]

There are also conversion items between stack tiers, such as Stack Upgrade Conversion: Starter Tier to Tier 1. The pack changed those recipes too.[4]
Quest-book upgrade groups
- Useful upgrades: the Crafting Upgrade adds a portable crafting table, and the Stonecutter Upgrade and Anvil Upgrade add those tables too. The pack changed the Crafting and Anvil recipes.[2][4]
- Void: the Void Upgrade voids the items in its filter, and the Advanced Void Upgrade adds more filtering options. The pack changed both recipes.[2][4]
- Auto-pickup: the Pickup Upgrade and Magnet Upgrade pick items up for you, and they have Advanced versions. The quest also says Magnet upgrades can automate farms when the backpack is placed in the world. The pack changed the Pickup and Magnet recipes.[2][4]
- The Inception Upgrade lets you put a backpack inside another backpack, which is normally not allowed. The pack changed its recipe.[2][4]
The Advanced Magnet Upgrade has two routes in the pack: from the Advanced Pickup Upgrade, or from a normal Magnet Upgrade.[4]

If you already have the Sophisticated Storage version of some upgrades, such as Pickup, Magnet, Advanced Void or Crafting, there are recipes that turn them into the backpack version.[4]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with other mods through recipes: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. Both links are about upgrades, so you will want your backpack set up before you dig into them.[4]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workbench has a matching backpack upgrade. The dump marks all of these recipes as changed by the pack, so they are the pack's versions, not the mod's defaults. Every one is built around the Chipped workbench itself plus an Upgrade Base.[4]
- Alchemy Bench becomes Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade[4]
- Botanist Workbench becomes Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade[4]
- Carpenters Table becomes Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade[4]
- Glassblower becomes Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade[4]
- Loom Table becomes Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade[4]
- Mason Table becomes Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade[4]
- Tinkering Table becomes Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade[4]
Here is the Mason Table upgrade as an example. The other upgrades follow the same pattern with their own workbench.[4]

Sharing upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Storage has matching versions of the backpack upgrades, and the pack has recipes that swap between them in both directions. The dump counts 40 recipes each way, and they are listed as mod recipes, not pack changes. They cover upgrades such as Crafting Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Advanced Void Upgrade and the Chipped upgrades above.[4]

In the quest book
Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage sit in the same quest chapter, General Storage, in the group Resources & Logistics (chapter 7 of 31). The "Sophisticated Storage" quest quest introduces the storage side, and its follow-up "Tier Upgrades" quest says you can upgrade storage through the metal tiers just like Sophisticated Backpacks. The backpack equivalent is the "Tier Upgrades" quest quest. The chapter has 146 quests, and most of their text isn't covered here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[2]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
2 parts
All of the Sophisticated Backpacks quests live in one chapter: "General Storage", in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31 in the quest book). The chapter opens with "General Storage Options" quest, a checkmark quest that says it covers most of the basic ways to store your items. The backpack quests are a small branch of that chapter, so you can work through them whenever you like.[2]
The starting quest
"Sophisticated Backpacks" quest asks you to get a Backpack. No prerequisite is shown for it. Its text covers the basics: backpacks can be upgraded to hold more, they have lots of upgrades (like the Crafting Upgrade for a portable crafting table), you can wear one in a Curio Slot and open it with a keybind, and you can place it in the world by Sneak + Right-clicking while holding it in your main hand.[2]
Three quests come straight after it: "Colorful Backpacks!" quest, "Upgrade Base" quest and "Tier Upgrades" quest.[2]
- "Colorful Backpacks!" quest: a short quest about dyeing your backpacks, handy for color-coding them.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest: asks for the Upgrade Base, which you need before crafting any backpack upgrade. The text also mentions Stack Upgrades and the Feeding Upgrade, which can feed you automatically when you are hungry.[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest: asks for any one of the Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack. From the basic backpack you can go to Copper or Iron. Going to Copper first saves iron, since upgrading from Copper only needs 4 Iron Ingots. Each tier also gives more Upgrade Slots.[2]
Upgrade quests
Once you have the Upgrade Base, five more quests unlock, each with "Upgrade Base" quest as its prerequisite.[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest: any of the Stack Upgrades, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and Tier 1 to Tier 4 (Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4) up to Stack Upgrade Omega Tier. They multiply the stack size of each slot, and also raise the limits of upgrades like Tank or Battery.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest: the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Anvil Upgrade, which put those tables inside your backpack.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest: the Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade. The basic one voids the specific items you put in its filter, and the Advanced version has more filtering options. Great for getting rid of cobble on mining trips.[2]
- "Auto-Pickup Upgrades!" quest: the Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade. They let the backpack pick up items for you, with filter settings. The quest also says the Magnet upgrades can automate farms when the backpack is placed in the world.[2]
- "Inception Upgrade" quest: the Inception Upgrade. Normally you can't put a backpack inside another backpack, and this upgrade gets around that.[2]
The same chapter also has a Sophisticated Storage branch for chests and barrels, with its own matching Upgrade Base, Stack, Void and Useful Upgrades quests. Those are separate quests, so check the chapter if you want that mod's version. The quest text for 13 of the chapter's 146 quests is not covered here, so the quest book is the place to look for the rest.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
3 parts
Almost everything for Sophisticated Backpacks lives in the server config file. This pack leaves most values at the mod default and changes four of them. All four are about mobs wearing backpacks and about how many backpacks you can carry.[3]
What the pack changed
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance is 0 here (mod default 0.5). It is the chance of a mob dropping its backpack when a player kills it, so in this pack they won't drop it.[3]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0.02 here (mod default 0.01). It is the chance of an entity spawning with a backpack.[3]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel is 0 here (mod default 0.15). Looting doesn't raise the backpack drop chance.[3]
- server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 1 here (mod default 3). It is the most backpacks you can hold in your inventory without getting slowness.[3]
Backpack sizes (mod defaults)
The pack doesn't touch the slot counts, so every tier matches the mod default. Each entry shows inventory slots and upgrade slots.[3]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.ironBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.ironBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.goldBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.goldBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots (server.diamondBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.diamondBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots (server.netheriteBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.netheriteBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[3]
Other settings worth knowing
- server.maxUpgradesPerStorage is set to 1 for each of furnace_upgrades, stack_upgrades and jukebox_upgrade, so a backpack takes only one of each.[3]
- Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic magnet (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange) and 5 for the advanced one (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[3]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false, so nobody can open a backpack another player is wearing.[3]
- server.disallowedItems blocks mekanism:personal_barrel and mekanism:personal_chest from going into backpacks.[3]
- common.chestLootEnabled is false, so the mod adds no loot to vanilla chest loot tables.[6]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.addLoot is false, so backpacks that mobs spawn with don't get extra loot added.[3]
