MEGA Cells is a mod in FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.13.0, where it is version 4.11.0. ME Greater Accumulation: For when kilobytes just won't do. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is MEGA Cells?

2 parts

MEGA Cells is an add-on for Applied Energistics 2 that gives you higher tiers of ME storage, from 1M all the way up to 256M, plus some specialised cells and extra tools. This pack ships version 4.11.0.[1][2]

Everything starts with Sky Steel Ingot. You use it to build the Accumulation Processor, which the guide calls the backbone of almost every MEGA device.[2][3]

What you get

  • Bigger storage cells, plus the Bulk Item Cell. It holds just one item type, but an effectively infinite amount of it.[2][4]
  • Bigger crafting CPU parts. The MEGA coprocessor gives four coprocessing threads per block, and the MEGA Pattern Provider holds 18 patterns, processing patterns only.[5]
  • The Superdense Energy Cell, which holds up to 12.8 million AE, and the Greater Energy Card for wireless devices.[6]
  • Extras: the MEGA Interface (double capacity), the Portable Cell Workbench and the ME Cell Dock.[7]

Where the quest book puts it

MEGA Cells is covered in the "General Storage" chapter. That is chapter 7 of 31 in the book, in the "Resources & Logistics" group. The chapter has 146 quests and describes itself as covering most of the basic ways to store your items.[3]

The entry for the mod is "MEGA Storage" quest, and it comes after the quest "The Start of Digital Storage!". It asks you for a Sky Steel Ingot, a 1M MEGA Storage Component and an Inscriber Accumulation Press. The quest says you need Sky Steel to make the storage components.[3]

Sky Steel also shows up in "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest. That quest asks for a Sky Steel Ingot before you craft your first Machine Core, and it follows "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest. The rest of the chapter's quests, including whatever follows the MEGA Storage quest, are told in the quest book itself.[3]

How do you get started with MEGA Cells?

4 parts

MEGA Cells is an Applied Energistics 2 add-on that adds storage tiers from 1M up to 256M, plus some specialised cells and tools. Everything in it hangs off one new material and one new processor, so that is where you start.[2]

In the pack's quest book, the "MEGA Storage" quest quest sits in the General Storage chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 7 of 31). It comes after "The Start of Digital Storage!" and asks you for a Sky Steel Ingot, a 1M storage component and the Accumulation Press.[3]

Step 1: Make Sky Steel

To reach the higher storage tiers you need new materials, and the most important one is plenty of Sky Stone, which gets turned into Sky Steel Ingot. The quest "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest explains where to get Sky Stone: trading with the Fluix Researcher villager, trading with a Wandering Trader, smelting sky stone dust, or mining floating structures. The ingots are an alloy, and you need a much hotter fluid than water to make them.[2][3]

The pack changed the standard Sky Steel recipe, so it makes 2 ingots per craft. Here it is:[8]

Transform (ae2)

Recipe id: megacells:transform/sky_steel_ingot

This recipe is changed by the pack and makes 2 ingots.

The pack also adds its own alternative recipe that makes a single ingot:[8]

This recipe is added by the pack.

Step 2: Build the Accumulation Processor

The Accumulation Processor is the backbone of almost every MEGA device, so you need it before any storage. First you need the Inscriber Accumulation Press. The quest "A Certain Quartz" quest explains how to get the AE2 presses.[2][3][8]

Inscriber (ae2)

Recipe id: megacells:inscriber/accumulation_processor_press

This one is an inscriber recipe.

Use the press with Sky Steel to make a Printed Accumulation Circuit. Then finish the processor in an inscriber:[8]

Recipe id: megacells:inscriber/accumulation_processor

Step 3: Your first MEGA storage component

With processors in hand, you can craft the 1M MEGA Storage Component, the first MEGA tier. 1M is equivalent to 1024k.[8][9]

A component alone is not a cell. You also need a housing, and the item cell housing for the M-tier components takes more Sky Steel. Fluid cells use their own housing made from Sky Bronze, and other cell types have dedicated housings too.[9]

Step 4: Climb the tiers

The tiers run from 1M up to 256M. Each component recipe builds on the one below it and uses another Accumulation Processor. The next step up is the 4M MEGA Storage Component:[8][9]

Tip: Build up a stock of Accumulation Processors once your Sky Steel supply is steady. The 1M, 4M, 16M and 256M component recipes each use one.[8]

How does MEGA Cells work?

9 parts

MEGA Cells is an Applied Energistics 2 add-on that adds bigger storage tiers, from 1M up to 256M, plus a few specialised cells and extra tools. Almost everything in it is built around one part: the Accumulation Processor, which the mod's guide calls the backbone of nearly every MEGA device.[2][9][10]

Storage cells and housings

The M tiers start at 1M (which is 1024k) and go up to 256M. The component tiers in the pack's language data are 1M, 4M, 16M, 64M and 256M. Each cell needs a matching MEGA housing, and there are separate housings for items, fluids, chemicals and other types.[9][10]

The first MEGA component is built on the 256k AE2 component plus the Accumulation Processor.

Higher tiers build on the tier below, so the 16M component needs a 4M component.

To get a finished cell, you combine a component with a housing. The 16M chemical cell is a good example: it is a shapeless craft of a 16M MEGA Storage Component and a MEGA Chemical Cell Housing.[8]

Sky Bronze and Sky Osmium in this pack

The guide describes Sky Bronze as the alloy behind the fluid cell housings. In this pack, Sky Bronze Ingot can be made in several machines, and the pack changed or added most of these recipes. The in-world transform recipe is changed by the pack and gives 2 ingots per craft. The Extended AE crystal assembler recipe is also changed and gives 8 ingots. The AE2 Lightning Tech overload processing recipe is changed too and gives 64 ingots. The Modern Industrialization constructor recipe is added by the pack and gives 1 ingot.[8][9]

Portable cells

MEGA has portable versions of all its cells, just as AE2 does. They support the same range of upgrades as regular ME portable cells, but they use a lot more energy. Because of that, they are crafted with a stronger energy cell than the regular portable cells use.[9]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: megacells:cells/portable/portable_chemical_cell_16m

The 16M Portable Chemical Cell is a good example: it uses an ME Chest, a Dense Energy Cell, a 16M component and a chemical housing.

Bulk Item Cell

The MEGA Bulk Item Storage Cell is the opposite of a normal cell. A standard cell can hold up to 63 item types, but the Bulk Cell holds only one type, with no practical limit on the amount. Inside the cell the count can go past 9.2 quintillion, even though an ME network only handles and displays up to that figure per item type.[4][10]

It does not use AE2 or MEGA housings. It has its own Netherite housing and is always crafted from scratch with the MEGA Bulk Storage Component, so it cannot be taken apart again.[4][10]

  1. Partition the new cell to choose the one item it will store. It does nothing until you do this.[4]
  2. Once the filter is set, the cell takes in that item and prioritises itself as the place to send it.[4]
  3. As long as the filter still matches the stored item, it inserts and extracts like a regular cell.[4]
Watch out: If the filter is cleared or replaced, the cell errors out and stops accepting items. You can still extract what is inside. It works normally again once the original filter is restored, or once it is emptied and given a new non-empty filter.[4]

Bulk Compression

The Compression Card is an upgrade card that only works in the Bulk Cell. It makes the cell aware of other forms of the resource it stores, such as ingots, nuggets and blocks, so it can accept those variants and compress them automatically, following the crafting recipes. For example, if one ingot crafts into 9 nuggets and back, the cell accepts both forms and turns every 9 nuggets into an ingot.[4][10]

Compression extends along the whole chain up to the largest block variants. Internally the cell counts its quantity in the smallest unit the resource crafts down into, such as a nugget, a gem shard or a dust. You can extract any variant with automation, or from a terminal by Shift-clicking.[4]

Auto-crafting

MEGA adds bigger storage blocks for crafting CPUs, in 1M, 4M, 16M, 64M and 256M. They need their own dedicated version of the crafting unit, the MEGA Crafting Unit, and they look black. The MEGA Crafting Co-Processing Unit gives 4 co-processing threads per block. The MEGA Crafting Monitor works the same as the regular monitor and only matches the look.[5][10]

The MEGA Pattern Provider holds 18 patterns, double the usual capacity. The trade-off is that it supports processing patterns only.[5][10]

Energy

The Superdense Energy Cell holds 8 times as much energy as the smaller AE2 energy cell the guide compares it to, and 64 times as much as a standard energy cell, for up to 12.8 million AE per cell.[6]

You can also craft a Greater Energy Card from it. AE2's own wireless devices accept it as well as the regular Energy Card, but MEGA portable cells accept only the Greater Energy Card for extra battery capacity.[6]

Interface, Cell Dock and workbench

  • The MEGA Interface is a double-capacity interface, with twice the slots, I/O and throughput, and twice the stock-keeping.[7]
  • The ME Cell Dock holds one storage cell at a time. It has no built-in terminal like the ME Chest. It is a flat cable part, so a single cable can carry several docks in one block space.[7]
  • The Portable Cell Workbench is a handheld version of the Cell Workbench, and it can configure any storage cell as normal.[7]

Radioactive Chemical Cell

This cell only matters with Mekanism and Applied Mekanistics. It stores only radioactive chemicals, which the regular chemical cells refuse. Like the Bulk Cell it holds a single chemical type and must be partitioned first. Unlike the Bulk Cell, its capacity is finite: 256 bytes, equal to 2048 buckets, or 4 Nuclear Waste Barrels.[11]

It draws 250 AE/tick while inside a connected ME Chest or Drive. For comparison, the guide lists 0.5 AE/tick, 2.5 AE/t and 5 AE/t for other cells. By default it will not store Spent Nuclear Waste.[11]

Unverified The guide says the Spent Nuclear Waste restriction can be configured, but it does not say how, and no MEGA Cells config file is available for this pack.

How do you progress through MEGA Cells?

5 parts

MEGA Cells adds storage tiers from 1M up to 256M on top of the AE2 cells you already know. In this pack the quest book puts it in the General Storage chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 7 of 31), in the quest "MEGA Storage" quest. That quest comes after "The Start of Digital Storage!" and asks you for a Sky Steel Ingot, a 1M MEGA Storage Component and an Inscriber Accumulation Press. The rest of the chapter's quests are in the quest book.[2][3]

Step 1: Sky Steel

Everything starts with Sky Steel. The quest book points you to "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest for Sky Stone, and says the Reaction Chamber ("The Reaction Chamber" quest) is needed for materials like Sky Steel and Sky Bronze.[3]

The pack changes the in-world transform recipe, and one craft gives 2 Sky Steel Ingots. It also adds its own lava-based recipe that uses Quartz Enriched Iron. That fits the Refined Storage 2 quest, which wants a Sky Steel Ingot before your first Machine Core.[3][8]

Sky Bronze Ingot and Sky Osmium Ingot have their own transform and Crystal Assembler recipes, and the pack changes both of those. You need these alloys for the fluid and chemical housings below.[8]

Step 2: Accumulation Processor

The new press is made at the Inscriber and needs a Singularity, so the Matter Condenser quest ("The Matter Condenser" quest) is your friend here. From there the chain is: press, then a Printed Accumulation Circuit, then the finished Accumulation Processor.[3][8]

Specialised extras

  • The MEGA Bulk Item Storage Cell stores a single item type, but with effectively unlimited capacity. It has its own Netherite housing, so it does not use the normal MEGA housings.[4][8]
  • The Compression Card is an upgrade exclusive to the Bulk Cell. It lets the cell accept and automatically compress variants of the stored resource, such as nuggets, ingots and blocks.[4]
  • The MEGA Decompression Module recipe is changed by the pack, so check the recipe below rather than the mod's default.[8]
  • The ME Cell Dock is a compact cell holder that works as a flat cable part. The pack changed its recipe too.[7][8]

AE2 and the quest book

The MEGA Storage quest "MEGA Storage" quest sits in the "General Storage" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 7 of 31). It comes after "The Start of Digital Storage!". It asks for Sky Steel, a 1M component and the accumulation press, and says the new press is crafted using a Singularity. The book has many more quests in that chapter, so check it in game for the rest.[3]

Refined Storage 2

The pack changed the Machine Casing recipe so it needs Sky Steel Ingot. The quest "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest follows the Sky Stone quest and asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, a Sky Steel Ingot and the Machine Casing. Its text says you need Sky Steel Ingots before crafting your first Machine Core.[3][8]

Mekanism

The pack changed the Wind Generator recipe to need a Sky Osmium Ingot. It also added a Modern Industrialization assembler recipe for it that uses 2 Sky Osmium Ingots.[8]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use MEGA Cells?

4 parts

MEGA Cells shows up in one chapter of the pack's quest book: "General Storage". It is chapter 7 of 31, in the "Resources & Logistics" group, and it has 146 quests. Some of those quests were not available to me, so check the quest book for anything not covered here.[3]

The MEGA Storage quest

The main MEGA quest is "MEGA Storage" quest. It asks you to hand in Sky Steel Ingot, 1M MEGA Storage Component and Inscriber Accumulation Press. The quest text says you need Sky Steel for the storage components, plus a new type of Inscription Press that is crafted using a Singularity.[3]

It unlocks right after "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest, the quest where you build your first ME Drive and a 1k storage cell component. So you need basic AE2 digital storage running before you start on MEGA.[3]

The path to get there

  1. "Getting Started With Applied Energistics!" quest starts the AE2 line, and "A Certain Quartz" quest follows it for Certus Quartz.[3]
  2. "Certus Quartz Budding" quest, then "Inscribing Processors" quest, "Silicon" quest and "Completing Processors" quest take you through budding, Inscribers, Silicon and finished Processors.[3]
  3. "Cables and Channels" quest covers channels and cables, and it leads straight into "The Start of Digital Storage!" quest.[3]
  4. "MEGA Storage" quest is the MEGA quest itself.[3]

Where Sky Steel and the Singularity come from

The Singularity for the press is covered by "The Matter Condenser" quest, which asks for the Condenser and a Singularity. It comes after "Fluix Crystals" quest.[3]

For Sky Steel, "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest explains where to find Sky Stone. "The Reaction Chamber" quest says the Reaction Chamber is required for crafting Sky Steel and Sky Bronze.[3]

Sky Steel in the Refined Storage 2 line

Sky Steel Ingot also appears as a task in "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest, next to other Refined Storage items. That quest comes after "But where's the Sky Stone?" quest. Its text says you need Sky Steel Ingots before crafting your first Machine Core, and it points you to the attached quest for how to make them.[3]
