What is Advanced Peripherals?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Advanced Peripherals adds a set of extra peripherals and turtle upgrades for ComputerCraft-style computers. The pack includes version 0.8.0a. The in-game manual describes the peripherals as a way to interact with other mods, players, the world and the game chat.[1][2][3]

It's for you if you like programming. The blocks all work by connecting them to a computer, and the turtle features rely on CC:Tweaked's turtle fuel rules. If you never touch computers or turtles, you can safely skip this mod.[4][5][6]

What you get

  • Information blocks: the Block Reader reads blocks and tile entities in front of it, the Environment Detector reports things like time, moon phase and light level, the Geo Scanner scans blocks and the chunk around it, and the Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range.[4][7][8][9]
  • Chat and energy: the Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages, and the Energy Detector measures energy flow and can limit it like a resistor.[5][10]
  • Mod bridges: the ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2, the RS Bridge talks to Refined Storage, and the Colony Integrator works with a MineColonies colony.[11][12][13]
  • Player inventory access: the Inventory Manager communicates with a player's inventory using a Memory Card that you assign to yourself.[14][15]
  • Pocket computer upgrades for the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box. These don't support the associated events.[16]

Turtle upgrades

The Weak Automata Core turns a turtle into a more capable automaton. It can dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge the turtle from an RF item. It's also the starting point for two advanced variants: the End Automata Core adds limited world-bound teleportation, and the Husbandry Automata Core lets the turtle interact with animals.[17][18][19]

Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version that doesn't use item durability. The catch is that it breaks immediately if you use it without enough fuel. The Chunk Controller is a separate ingredient that makes a turtle chunk-loading.[20][21]

Tip: Automata operations use turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown, but fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops, so don't crank it up without checking the numbers.[6]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests in this pack that involve the mod, or any place for it on the ATM Star path. Treat it as an optional mod for players who enjoy automation with computers.

How do you get started with Advanced Peripherals?

5 parts

Advanced Peripherals adds blocks that you connect to a computer, plus upgrades that make a turtle much more capable. Most of the blocks say the same thing in their guide entries: connect it to a computer to make use of it. So the plan is to craft the shared ingredient first, then pick the peripheral that solves your first problem.[22][23][24][25]

Step 1: the Peripheral Casing

Start with the Peripheral Casing. It is an empty hull used as a crafting ingredient, and many of the mod's blocks need one, so you will make it again and again. The pack changed this recipe, so follow the one below.[26][27]

If you want these on the move, the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box all have Pocket Computer upgrades. Combine one with a pocket computer to add the peripheral to it, but you can't use the associated events that way. In this pack Peripherals.Pocket_Peripherals.disablePocketFuelConsumption is set to true, so pockets have infinite fuel.[30][31]

Step 3: reading and scanning the world

When you want data about the world around you, the Geo Scanner provides information about nearby blocks and the chunk it sits in. It has a delay between scans, so plan for that in your code.[32]

Step 4: working with your own inventory

The Inventory Manager can send or receive specific items from a player inventory. It needs a Memory Card: right click with the card in hand to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[27][33][34]

Step 5: upgrading a turtle

Once you are comfortable with computers, the Weak Automata Core is the first turtle upgrade. It lets a turtle dig with a tool, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge itself from an RF item in its inventory. It is also the starting point for the End and Husbandry cores, which you get by feeding it mobs.[27][35]

Tip: World-changing operations burn turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel, and each core has a maximum rate you can read with the getConfiguration method. Keep your turtles fueled before you test your code.[36]
Watch out: Skip the Overpowered cores until you are ready for them. They don't use up item durability, but if you try an operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately.[37]

If you build a storage network later, the ME Bridge connects your computers to Applied Energistics 2 and uses one channel. The RS Bridge does the same job for Refined Storage.[38][39]

How does Advanced Peripherals work?

9 parts

Advanced Peripherals mixes peripheral blocks with turtle upgrades. Most of its blocks are peripherals: you place one, connect it to a computer, and your code does the rest. The other big part is the automata cores, which are turtle upgrades that turn a plain turtle into something much more capable. Here is how both work in this pack.[22][35][40]

Peripherals: connect, then script

Nearly every peripheral block works the same way: connect it to a computer and call its methods. That covers the Chat Box, Energy Detector, Environment Detector, Geo Scanner, Inventory Manager, ME Bridge, NBT Storage, Player Detector and RS Bridge. The Block Reader needs one extra step: it reads the block in front of it, so you connect it to a computer and also aim it at a target block.[23][24][27][28][29][32][34][38][39][41][42]

Almost all of these are built around the Peripheral Casing, an empty hull used as a crafting ingredient. The pack changed its recipe, and this is the in-pack version.[26][27]

Recipe id: advancedperipherals:peripheral_casing

The pack leaves each peripheral enabled in its config. The one exception is powered peripherals: Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.enablePoweredPeripherals is false here, so peripherals do not store RF.[31]

Right after a peripheral is initialised, an initial cooldown can apply. Core.isInitialCooldownEnabled is true in this pack, and Core.initialCooldownSensitiveLevel is 6,000, the same as the mod default.[43]

Storage bridges and energy

Players, chat and the world

The Player Detector recognises players within a range, and also the player who clicks it. In this pack Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerDetMaxRange is -1, which means unlimited. The random position error is off, because Peripherals.Player_Detector.enablePlayerPosRandomError is false, and extra info such as rotation and dimension is added to position lookups.[28][31]

The Chat Box sends and receives game chat. If you start a message with a $ symbol, only the Chat Box sees it. The default prefix in Peripherals.Chat_Box.defaultChatBoxPrefix is AP, Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMaxRange is -1 (unlimited), and Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMessageSize allows messages of up to 1,024 characters.[24][31]

Because Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxWrapCommand is true, run_command and suggest_command actions run with zero permission. A list of dangerous commands such as /give and /op is also blocked in Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxBannedCommands.[31]

The Geo Scanner reports blocks around it and the chunk it sits in. It has a delay between scans, so build that into your code. The scan numbers live in the Operations section of the peripherals config: Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksCooldown is 2,000, Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxFreeRadius is 8, Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxCostRadius is 16 and Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksExtraBlockCost is 0.17.[31][32]

The Environment Detector reads things like the current time, the moon phase and the light level of its block.[29]

Inventory Manager and Memory Card

The Inventory Manager talks to a player's inventory. To set it up, right click with a Memory Card in hand to bind it to yourself, then put the card into the manager. The AR Goggles can use the same setup to reach the player's inventory.[33][34]

Pocket computers and chunk loading

You can combine the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box upgrades with a pocket computer to add that peripheral to it. You can't use the associated events there. This pack also sets Peripherals.Pocket_Peripherals.disablePocketFuelConsumption to true, so pockets have infinite fuel.[30][31]

The Chunk Controller is the crafting ingredient that makes a turtle or advanced turtle chunk-loading, a Chunky Turtle. With Peripherals.Chunky_Turtle.chunkyTurtleRadius at 0, it only loads the chunk the turtle is standing in. A value of 1 would load 9 chunks in total.[31][44]

Automata cores

The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade. It lets a turtle dig with a tool, click on blocks with an item or empty hand, suck up items (all or specific ones), detect items around it, detect a block or turtle in its line of view, and charge the turtle from an RF item in its inventory. The pack changed its recipe.[26][35]

Feed the weak core the souls of mobs and it upgrades:[35]

Fuel and cooldowns

World-changing operations use turtle fuel, unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked config. Most of them also have a cooldown, and you can read every active cooldown through peripheral methods.[36]

A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel. For example, an operation that costs 1 fuel and has a 5 second cooldown can run every 2.5 seconds at rate 2, for 2 fuel. Fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops: rate 3 needs 4 fuel points. Each core has a max rate, which you can read with the getConfiguration method.[36]

The pack leaves the core limits at the mod defaults. The Metaphysics config has a separate interaction radius and max fuel rate for each tier:[46]

The Operations section of the peripherals config sets each action's cost and cooldown. Here are some of the values, also unchanged from the mod defaults.[31]

Metaphysics.energyToFuelRate sets the energy to fuel rate, and it is 575 in this pack.[46]

Overpowered cores

Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version. These cores don't use up item durability, but they are fragile: if you try an operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately. Metaphysics.overpoweredAutomataBreakChance is 0.002, a chance that an overpowered core breaks after a rotation cycle.[37][46]

Crafting Shapeless

Soul Bricked hatches

The pack's startup script registers a casing called soul_bricks_casing that imitates the Peripheral Casing. It also registers fluid and item hatches named Soul Bricked on that casing, alongside a Bricked set that uses a different casing. That is pack-specific multiblock plumbing, not part of the mod itself.[48]

How do you progress through Advanced Peripherals?

4 parts

The order below follows the crafting chain. Almost everything grows out of one block, the Peripheral Casing. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[26]

Stage 1: Casing-based peripherals

Peripherals are blocks you connect to a computer. Once you have casings, you can build the first wave. The pack changed most of these recipes, but the Environment Detector keeps the mod's own recipe.[26]

  • Chat Box: sends and receives game chat messages. A message starting with $ is only visible to the Chat Box.[24]
  • Player Detector: recognizes players within a certain range, and also the player who clicks on it.[28]
  • Environment Detector: reads things like the current time, the moon phase and the light level of the block.[29]
  • Energy Detector: detects energy flow and acts as a resistor, with a max flow rate you can define.[41]
  • Block Reader: reads data of the blocks and tile entities in front of it.[23][26]
  • Geo Scanner: gives information about the blocks around it and its chunk. It has a delay between scans.[32]
  • NBT Storage: lets you input and output custom data to a block.[42]

The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box also come as pocket computer upgrades. Combine them with a pocket computer, but note that you can't use the associated events that way.[30]

Stage 2: Player and chunk tools

The Inventory Manager talks to a player's inventory. Right click a Memory Card to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager. The pack changed the Memory Card recipe, and it does not use a Peripheral Casing.[26][33][34]

The Chunk Controller is an ingredient for the Chunky Turtle: combine it with a turtle or advanced turtle to make it chunk-loading. The pack changed its recipe too. The Computer Tool opens GUIs from the mod's blocks, though the in-game guide admits it is currently useless.[26][44][49]

Stage 3: Storage bridges

If you run a storage network, the bridges let a computer retrieve and craft items and list everything stored. Both keep the mod's own recipes. The ME Bridge works with Applied Energistics 2 and uses one channel. The RS Bridge works with Refined Storage.[26][38][39]

From there you feed mobs to the weak core to get a variant. After consuming 10 endermen it becomes the End Automata Core, which adds limited teleportation. After consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep it becomes the Husbandry Automata Core, which can interact with animals. Stored points and animals are lost if the turtle is broken.[26][35][45][47]

The last step is the overpowered version of any core: combine the core with a nether star. The mod's own recipes are used here, and each core has its own overpowered form, such as the Overpowered Weak Automata Core.[26][37]

Watch out: Overpowered cores don't consume item durability, but if you try an operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately. Keep your turtle fuelled.[37]
Tip: Higher fuel consumption rates shorten cooldowns, but fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops. Each core has a max rate you can read with the getConfiguration method.[36]

How does Advanced Peripherals work with other mods?

5 parts

Advanced Peripherals is mostly a bridge mod: its peripherals let a CC: Tweaked computer talk to other things in the world. In this pack, the recipes show the links clearly for storage, and a pack script even reuses one of its blocks in a machine casing.[22][26][48]

Applied Energistics 2: the ME Bridge

The ME Bridge interacts with Applied Energistics 2. From a computer you can retrieve items, craft items, get a list of everything stored and more. It uses one channel, so plan your network for that.[38]

Its crafting is where the two mods meet: you need an Fluix Block and an ME Interface alongside the Peripheral Casing. This is the mod's own recipe, which the pack has not changed.[26]

Refined Storage: the RS Bridge

If you run Refined Storage instead, the RS Bridge does the same kind of job: retrieve items, craft items, list everything and more. Connect it to a computer to use it.[39]

The recipe takes a Refined Storage Advanced Processor and Interface, plus one exporter, one external storage and one importer from the Refined Storage tags. It is also the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.[26]

CC: Tweaked parts and pack-changed recipes

The Block Reader and the Geo Scanner both use a CC: Tweaked Wired Modem in their recipes. The pack has changed both recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Use the recipes below.[26]

Beyond crafting, the turtle and pocket computer features also lean on CC: Tweaked. The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade, and the pocket computer addons add the Environment Detector, Player Detector or Chat Box to a pocket computer. Turtle fuel use follows the CC: Tweaked configuration.[30][35][36]

MineColonies

The Colony Integrator can interact with a colony from MineColonies. Connect it to a computer in the area of the village to make use of it. The sources I have don't include an in-pack recipe for it.[50]

A pack script that borrows the casing

The pack's startup script registers a machine casing called soul_bricks_casing that imitates the Peripheral Casing block. It also registers Soul Bricked fluid and item hatches that use that casing, so the Peripheral Casing doubles as a building block for that machine setup.[48]

Which Advanced Peripherals config options matter?

6 parts

Advanced Peripherals splits its settings across four files in config/Advancedperipherals: general.toml, world.toml, metaphysics.toml and peripherals.toml. Every option below is shown as this pack sets it.[31][43][46][51]

Tip: Every numeric setting that lists a mod default (ranges, costs, cooldowns) matches that default in this pack. The on/off options show no default in the files, so the values below are simply what you get in this pack.[31][43][46][51]

World and onboarding

Power and fuel

Chat Box and Player Detector

Turtles and scanning

Safety and cooldown options

Unsafe.enableUnsafe is false, and Unsafe.ignoreTurtlePeripheralItemNBT is false too. The file warns that turning the second one on makes you lose all NBT on the equipped item. Debug mode (General.enableDebugMode) is off, and the file says to only enable it if needed.[43]

Initial cooldown on peripheral initialization is on (Core.isInitialCooldownEnabled is true). Core.initialCooldownSensitiveLevel is 6,000, and values lower than that will not trigger the initial cooldown.[43]
